Tech: Daylight Saving Time is literally killing us

Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday, November 4, 2018.

Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday, November 4, 2018. Years of data tell us the switch is deadly. Here's why it puts stress on our bodies.

  • Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, November 4, 2018.
  • At 2:00 a.m. that morning, most phones and computers will automatically shift an hour back, and we'll get an extra hour of sleep.
  • The interruption to our internal clocks is a welcome reprieve each fall, but in the spring it literally kills people: incidents of heart attacks, strokes, and fatal car accidents all spike around the start of Daylight Saving Time each year.

Daylight saving time is a killer.

The annual ritual in which we trade an hour of morning light for evening brightness may seem like a harmless shift.

But each year, on the Monday after the springtime switch, hospitals report a 24% spike in heart attack visits around the country.

Doctors see the opposite trend in the fall: The day after we turn back the clocks, heart attack visits drop 21% as people enjoy a little extra pillow time.

On Sunday, November 4, instead of the clock turning from 1:59 to 2:00 a.m., it will repeat the hour, ticking back to 1:00 a.m. again. (Shift-workers, worry not: federal law mandates you will still get paid for that extra hour of moonlit work.) That extra hour of rest may seem like good news this weekend, but over the long haul, the interrupted sleep schedules that result from shifting the clocks back and forth may be bad for our health.

Researchers estimate that each spring we deprive ourselves of an extra 40 minutes of sleep because of the change. Our bodies may not fully recover from the shift for weeks, tough the tragic heart attack trend only lasts about a day. We're also prone to make more deadly mistakes on the roads: Researchers estimate that car crashes in the US caused by sleepy daylight-saving drivers likely cost 30 extra people their lives over the nine-year period from 2002-2011.

"That's how fragile and susceptible your body is to even just one hour of lost sleep," sleep expert Matthew Walker, author of How We Sleep, previously told Business Insider.

"The brain, by way of attention lapses and micro-sleeps, is just as sensitive as the heart to very small perturbations of sleep," Walker explains in his book.

The problems don't stop there. DST also causes more reports of injuries at work, more strokes, and may lead to a temporary bump in suicides.

Why we 'save' daylight for the evenings

Daylight Saving Time was originally concocted as a way to save energy, and was implemented during World War I in Germany. But more recent research suggests it's probably not saving us any megawatts of power at all. There u some evidence, however, that extra evening light can reduce crime and increase the time people spend exercising, at least in certain climates.

Worldwide, fewer than half of all countries participate in this biannual clock-changing ritual.

Not everyone in the US abides by the clock-shifting rule, either. Hawaii and Arizona already ignore DST, as it makes less sense to shift the clocks when you live near the equator, where the sun rises and sets at roughly the same time every day.

California voters are also heading to the polls on Tuesday to decide whether they want to ditch the switch. Florida recently approved the same idea, but it requires a green light from Congress.

Senior Indonesian Rescue Diver Dies In Jet Crash Search

An Indonesian rescue diver died in a search operation for a jet that crashed early this week near Jakarta, killing all 189 people on board, the search and rescue agency (Basarnas) said on Saturday.

Syachrul Anto, 48, died on Friday while diving to search for victims of the crashed Lion Air aircraft, the agency said on Saturday.

“Deepest condolences for the passing of a humanitarian hero from the Indonesian Diving Rescue Team, Basarnas chief Muhammad Syaugi said in a news release.

It was not immediately clear how Anto perished.

Anto’s family had chosen not to conduct an autopsy and asked for his remains to be buried immediately, Basarnas spokesman Yusuf Latif told Reuters by text message.

Among other missions, Anto was also one of the main divers involved in the search for an AirAsia jet that crashed off Borneo in late 2014.

Rescue divers have been crucial in recovering human remains and pieces of the wrecked near-new Boeing Co. (BA.N) 737 MAX that smashed into the sea early on Monday.

It crashed, 13 minutes after it took off from Jakarta.

As of Saturday a total of 73 body bags, few containing intact remains, had been recovered, but only four of the victims had been identified.

Divers have been searching through debris on the muddy sea bed for a second black box from the jet, as investigators try to get data from a partly damaged recorder recovered on Thursday.

The pilot of flight JT610 had asked for, and received, permission to turn back to Jakarta, but what went wrong remains a mystery.

“The team have been hearing the ‘ping’ sound from another black box for two days, Soerjanto Tjahjono, head of the transportation safety committee (KNKT), told media on Friday.

The sea is only 30 m (98 ft) deep at the crash site but strong currents and nearby pipelines have hampered the search.

Visiting the search operation headquarters at Jakarta’s port on Friday, President Joko Widodo thanked rescue officials and the military involved and appealed for a step up search.

“I ask for you to use all your might, all the technology available, to work fast to find anything else, he said.

While victims’ relatives are desperate to know what happened, the investigation of the first crash of a Boeing 737 MAX is also the focus of scrutiny by the global aviation industry.

Preliminary investigation findings are expected to be made public after 30 days.

Indonesia is one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets but its safety record has been patchy.

Its transport safety panel investigated 137 serious aviation incidents from 2012 to 2017.

“There’s still a lot we need to improve, Air Transportation Director General Pramintohadi Sukarno said at a press conference on Saturday, referring to safety rules.

Don’t Throw Away Colostrum, It Contains Antibodies Against Diseases- Paediatrician

UCTH

A Consultant Paediatrician, Prof. Emmanuel Ekanem, on Saturday decried the practice of throwing away the colostrum after the delivery of newborns, saying it contains antibodies to protect newborns against disease.

Ekanem of the Department of Paediatrics, University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Calabar, Cross Rivers, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that it was a wrong practice some mothers still indulged in.

According to Wikipaedia, Colostrum is the first form of milk produced by the mammary glands of mammals immediately following delivery of the newborn.

“Most species will generate colostrum just prior to giving birth. Colostrum contains antibodies to protect the newborn against disease, it said.

Colostrum is also a yellowish liquid, especially rich in immune factors.

Ekanem said: “It is surprising that mothers still believe the milk they produce in the first four days of life is not good for their babies.

“It is a very rich milk which helps the child to grow; it has a natural method of also preventing children from diseases.

“Colostrum is exactly what babies need for the first few days to protect them against infection as well as help keep their bowels soft.

“It is very concentrated with very high levels of proteins.

“So, it is important that the baby takes that milk; any mother who throws the milk away should know that she will never have that quality again after the first four days.

“The child too may not have that quality again after the first four days; it changes, babies who take the milk will definitely do better even in school.

“So, that early milk is very important, mothers should stop throwing it away.

The paediatrician urged mothers to frequently and exclusively breastfeed their babies whenever they demanded for it.

He said that regular breastfeeding was beneficial for the mother as it would help increase the production of breast milk.

Ekanem said breastfeeding should not be at set intervals, but regularly throughout the day and as the baby demanded.

He cautioned mothers against early introduction of solid foods to their babies, saying exclusive breastfeeding should continue for four to six months.

Ekanem said: “The baby’s body is not developed enough to tolerate solid foods before the first four months of age; breast milk provides entirely all the baby needs until that age.’’

He warned mothers to stop applying family tradition on their children wellbeing.

Bayern held at home to lose ground to Dortmund

Bayern Munich leaked a late equaliser in Saturday’s 1-1 home draw to Freiburg to leave them four points adrift of Borussia Dortmund before next weekend’s Bundesliga showdown.

Having laboured to a 2-1 win at fourth-tier part-timers Roedinghausen in the German Cup on Tuesday, Bayern struggled again at the Allianz Arena – exactly a week before they face leaders Dortmund away in a top-of-the-table clash.

Bayern’s star-studded attack needed 80 minutes to break the deadlock when Serge Gnabry dribbled through the defence and struck his shot low into the bottom right-hand corner.

However, Freiburg showed plenty of heart when Lucas Hoeler got in between Bayern’s burly centre-backs Niklas Suele and Jerome Boateng to equalise on 89 minutes and leave Munich head coach Niko Kovac shaking his head in frustration.

There could be more bad news coming for Kovac as Borussia Moenchengladbach can leap-frog Bayern into second if they beat strugglers Fortuna Duesseldorf at home on Sunday.

Dortmund restored their four-point lead over Bayern with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Wolfsburg as club captain Marco Reus headed their first-half winner.

Injuries to Lukasz Piszczek and Marcel Schmelzer meant Dortmund had to reshuffle their defence and struggled to finish their chances.

England winger Jadon Sancho, 18, who has already set up six league goals this season, fired in another superb cross from the left wing which Thomas Delaney headed back towards Reus, who steered the ball inside the post with his head on 28 minutes.

It was Dortmund’s 30th goal in just their 10th league game, but was a far from polished performance from the leaders.

Dortmund striker Paco Alcacer, in his first game back after injury, failed to add to his tally after scoring seven goals in his first four Bundesliga games.

– Nelson shines in rout –
After two huge wins on the road, Bayer Leverkusen, who thrashed Werder Bremen 6-2 last Sunday and hammered Borussia Moenchengladbach 5-0 in the German Cup in mid-week, crashed to a 4-1 defeat at home to Hoffenheim, whose Brazilian striker Joelinton scored twice.

English teenager Reiss Nelson, on loan from Arsenal, was again lethal on the right wing as the 18-year-old claimed his fifth goal in just six Bundesliga games, this time from the edge of the area on 19 minutes.

Leverkusen winger Karim Bellarabi sent Germany head coach Joachim Loew,a reminder of his talent with the equaliser, fired home from a tight angle with half an hour gone.

Loew names his squad for the upcoming games against Russia and the Netherlands next week.

However, the scores were level for just four minutes.

Joelinton headed Hoffenheim back into the lead and then won a penalty, converted by Italian midfielder Vincenzo Grifo on 49 minutes to make it 3-1.

Joelinton capped the rout 17 minutes from time by firing home Grifo’s final pass to keep the pressure on Leverkusen coach Heiko Herrlich.

Elsewhere, Schalke warmed up for Tuesday’s Champions League clash at home to Galatasaray with a 3-1 win over Hanover thanks to goals by Nabil Bentelab, Mark Uth and Breel Embolo.

Uth, who had a clear penalty appeal turned down earlier, won the spit-kick which which Bentaleb converted just after the break, then fired home one of his own on 85 minutes for his first Schalke goal since his summer signing from Hoffenheim.

It finished 2-2 in the Bavarian derby at mid-table Augsburg as strugglers Nuremberg earned a point away from home.
