Victor Moses linked with Jose Mourinho reunion at Manchester United

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri says Victor Moses does not fit his style, linked with a move to Manchester United.

Chelsea star Victor Moses has been linked with a possible reunion with former manager Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.

Moses under Sarri

There have been reports that Moses is considering an exit from Stamford Bridge during the winter transfer window in January.

Since the arrival of new manager Maurizio Sarri from Napoli who switched Chelsea's style of play from a three-man defense with wing backs to a back four, Moses has found game time limited.

Victor Moses

The 27-year-old has been on the fringes and constantly on the bench even Chelsea’s assistant coach Gianfranco Zola stating that youngster Callum Hudson Odoi is ahead of Moses.

Moses who has played for several sides in the Premier League on loan before a return to Stamford Bridge is hoping to get regular game time else as he has been restricted to just 26 minutes of league action this season.

He has contributed significantly in the Carabao Cup especially in the first leg against Liverpool and in the Europa League.

Moses linked with Manchester United

In a report by German media outlet Bild, Moses is among the players being considered as reinforcement by Mourinho in January.

Moses who has made a total of 78 appearances in the last two seasons under Antonio Conte is considering his future and might not be willing to see out the season if his place in the team does not change by the winter transfer window.

The report states that Moses is among the players being considered to help provide good service for Romelu Lukaku who has struggled in front of goal.

Chelsea Manager Maurizio Sarri recently stated that Moses is not suited to his style of play.

Speaking to reporters he said, "Moses is more suitable for playing wing back than like a winger or a full back, I think. I don’t know [if they have a future]. They have to improve but their characteristics are a little bit different."

Other players mentioned in the report include Eintracht Frankfurt's Croatia star Ante Rebic and AS Roma's Cengiz ünder.

He is expected to be given more minutes on the pitch when Chelsea travel to face BATE Borisov of Belarus in their next Europa League fixture scheduled for Thursday, November 8.

Moses retired from the Super Eagles of Nigeria after the world cup stating that he wants to concentrate more on his international career and family.

WAEC faults Presidency on reason for issuing Attestation of Result to President Buhari

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), on Saturday, disagreed with the Presidency that the body issued Attestation of Results to President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, based on a sense of duty.

Debunking the statement, WAEC’s spokesman, Damianus Ojijeogu, in an interview with Punch on Saturday, said the document was issued because the President applied for it.

“We would not have given him the document if he didn’t apply. It is only Buhari or a court that can ask for the results. There is no other person. So he asked for it, he said.

Presidential Media aide, Garba Shehu had in an opinion piece on Friday said that “the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, Friday, said the controversy concerning President Muhammadu Buhari’s school certificate is embarrassing and felt a sense of duty to produce and deliver to him a confirmation and attestation of his results, in form of a duplicate certificate.

This is a god-sent, with WAEC being a non-political entity. This should put to rest the absurd allegations by the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, brought up again and again, that he did not attend a secondary school,” he said.

Punch had also reported that Shehu, in an interview with its correspondent on Saturday, said WAEC authorities made it clear that they read about the controversy generated by the President’s missing certificate and saw the need to save the council’s integrity.

“No, the President did not apply for the documents. I made this clear in an opinion I wrote on Friday. The presentation of the documents to the President was strictly an initiative of WAEC,”  he said.

“They said they read about the controversy on the pages of newspapers and saw the need to save the integrity of the council, he added.

The body had earlier clarified same while answering questions from a number of Nigerians using its official Twitter handle, some of whom demanded to know why the President was not issued an Attestation of Result in 2015 when he last ran for office.

In a tweet posted late Friday, WAEC spelt out that only the candidate or a competent court could demand from it certificate or result, while spelling out the requirement for application of same:

“The documents for application are a letter of application, police report on lost or damaged certificate, photocopy of lost or damaged certificate, two recent passport-sized photographs of the candidate, sworn affidavit for collection of attestation of results and administrative fee of N20,000.

On the issue of presenting results to the President in his office, WAEC  dismissed the insinuation that the body could present certificates to wealthy individuals in their homes or offices, explaining that the case of President Buhari was done out of respect for his office

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

The body also clarified that the alleged discrepancies in the attestation of results issued and the statement of results from his school in Katsina presented by President Buhari in 2015 is non-existent as failed subjects are no longer captured in certificates or Attestaion of Results.

2019: Dickson Preaches Against Electoral Violence

Dickson

YENAGOA – Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State has warned that activities towards the 2019 general elections may be charecterised by bloodshed and violence if desperate politicians are allowed to have their way.

He stated this during a special church service to mark the 7th edition of the state’s Annual Thanksgiving Day at the Ecumenical Centre, Igbogene, Yenagoa, at the weekend.

The event attracted eminent clergymen, including Archbishop Margaret Idahosa of the Church of God Mission International; Bishop Yomi Isijola, Logos Ministries International Church; Apostle Zilly Aggrey, Royal House of Grace and Pastor Paul Adefarasin, House on the Rock Church, who delivered the sermon, among others.

Dickson said politicians that believe in securing elective office through brigandage and killing should realise that “you don’t get political control because you are a deadlier killer.”

He warned against killings and violence during the political campaigns, especially in Bayelsa State, stressing that power only comes from God.

The governor urged unscrupulous elements planning to destabilise the hard-earned peace in the state, to desist from such acts.

He also called on the political class to focus more on stability, development, peace and security, rather than political violence, thuggry and instability.

Describing the celebration as an opportunity for Bayelsans to renew their covenant of blessings with God, the governor called on the people to cultivate the habit of thanksgiving to attract more blessings.

Dickson, who read the first Bible lesson from I Corinthians 15: 1-10, said that his administration was able to achieve so much because real men of God assembled to hand over the state to God after a solemn assembly.

He said that Bayelsa was the only state in the country with a policy declaring a public holiday to give quality thanksgiving to God.

He thanked the people for their continued support and prayers for his administration and empathised with victims of this year’s devastating flood, assuring them that government would continue to identify with them in their plight.

Earth tremor: Group urges government to stop rock mining in FCT

Abuja. Photo credit: Getty

Following a repeat earth tremor in Maitama area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), a group, Heart of the Mother Foundation (HOMEF), has urged the Federal Government to stop rock mining in the capital city.

The group, which attributed the tremor to indiscriminate blasting of rocks, said the  tremors were clear signals that mining in Abuja must stop. It is a shame that we continue to ignore the warnings of nature in the mindless pursuit of cash, the statement signed by its Director, Ninmo Bassey, said.

“Now is the time for government to take a stand on the side of life and not corporate profits. Save Abuja, save Nigerians, protect our environment.

He said it was unfortunate that the suspension was lifted only after a few weeks and wondered why, and in whose interest should the blasting and mining activities continue at expense of peoples’ lives.

Electoral Act : Delay By Presidency, INEC Heightens Anxiety Over 2019 Elections

Samuel Ogidan and Gbenga Abegunrin

The National Assembly recently passed the fourth version of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill amending some sections of the Act to make provision for flexibility and transparency in the forthcoming elections. However, this amendment, has threw up some issues, which seem to be threatening the purpose for which the idea of amendment was conceived.

For instance, despite the legalisation of Smart Card Reader for voter accreditation, some commentators believe the National Assembly should have gone a step further by amending Section 13 of the Electoral Act to enable the electorate exercise their franchise from any part of the country on Election Day, irrespective of where they registered. The section stipulates the regulations to guide voters on transferring their voter’s cards from one polling station to the other.

The situation is further compounded by the delay by President Muhammadu Buhari to assent to the bill, weeks after it was passed by the National Assembly, a development that is heightening anxiety over the elections.

Also, scanty information about the upcoming 2019 general elections on the official website of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has become a source of concerns to political watchers.

Specifically, the personal particulars of candidates for the presidential and National Assembly elections were as at weekend yet to be uploaded on the website, despite inscription of ‘2019: INEC publishes Details of Candidates.’ But on logging into it, one finds, “Error-Page Not         Found.

INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, had at a press briefing recently urged members of the public to use the opportunity of the publication of the forms and particulars of the candidates, as submitted by their respective political parties, to raise claims and objections. But more than one week after the exercise, the commission is yet to upload the details.

Nigerians had been yearning for electorate to exercise their franchise from anywhere they are in the country as it is being practiced in the Western nations to meet the international best practices.

The call had become necessary following inability of most voters to effect transfer for their voters’ cards following change of place of residence or transfers in work places to other areas or states as the case may be.

Despite assurances by INEC, most voters have expressed disappointments in the commission for its inability to facilitate the transfer option, a development that would save people the cost of traveling and the risk of unforeseen circumstances during election period.

Some analysts say that in the 21st century, the nation is more than ripe enough for its citizens to cast their votes anywhere in the world, instead of this “archaic” method of voting 58 years after independence.

Another impediment, however, is the transfer of one voter’s register from one location to another; a development believed would be addressed with the full-blown practice of electronic voting system.

The practice of electronic voting, according to political watchers, would go a long way to help the nation to put things in the right perspective and also to achieve its millennium goal.

The National Assembly, in amending the Electoral Act, specifically took note of the issue of card reader, but despite the legalisation of Smart Card Reader for voter accreditation, some political analysts believe that the National Assembly should have gone a step further by amending Section 13 of the Act to enable the electorate exercise their franchise from any part of the country on election day, irrespective of where they registered.

Proffering solution to this development, some stakeholders were of the opinion that the issue of elections should be taken gradually, adding that the amendment to the Electoral Act was a right step in a right direction.

They said that with the amendment, the nation will eventually get it right in terms of elections in the country in years to come, adding that it will gradually get to a point where all impediments would be seamlessly addressed, including elimination of thuggery from elections as casting vote will be done electronically and not manually.

With the concern raised by stakeholders on the amendment, even though President Muhammadu Buhari is yet to assent the Bill, the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, had already dashed the hope of those believing that electronic voting would be part of 2019 elections, pointing out that because of time frame, the electronic system would not be used in the coming general elections.

“We have gone really far with this. If tomorrow the Bill is assented to, there are provisions that we can immediately implement but there are provisions that we cannot implement simply because of time. For instance, full blown electronic voting. It is impossible within the time frame available.

“We have been working closely with the National Assembly and many of the new provisions passed in the Bill were actually based on our recommendations. We prepared ourselves in such a way that in case some of the provisions become law, we would have no difficulty in implementing them, Prof. Yakubu had said.

This pronouncement has put paid to the call for electronic voting as far as 2019 election is concern. The system, which is believed would help the transfer of election results from the polling units, would have, according to political analysts, addressed rigging and other vices in elections.

Recall that the Senate, during the amendment of the Electoral Act, empowered INEC to use electronic voting for conduct and transmission of results in future elections and also legalised the Card Reader introduced by INEC for voters’ accreditation.

The card reader innovation used by INEC in the 2015 general election, was legalised by the Act under section 49, which deals with accreditation of voters, transmission of accreditation data among others.

Specifically, the Act under Section 49 (2) states: “The Presiding officer shall use a smart card reader or any other technological device that may be prescribed by the commission from time to time for the accreditation of voters, to verify, confirm or authenticate the genuineness or otherwise of the voter’s card.”

The Senate also approved a provision to enable INEC transmit the result of elections electronically in an encrypted and secured manner to prevent hacking.

In the Bill, the electronic voting provisions of the Act is contained in section 52 (2), which states: “The electoral commission shall adopt electronic voting in all elections or any other method of voting as may be determined by the commission from time to time.”

The section, however, gives INEC discretion to use other methods of voting if it is impracticable to use e-voting in any election.

Even though, the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki had expressed optimism during the amendment that the Bill would further improve the nation’s electoral system and also contribute to good governance, the INEC boss had stated otherwise, pointing out that electronic system would not be deployed for 2019 elections.

Saraki had said, “we have touched on new areas, which I believe will improve the credibility of our elections and by so doing, definitely improve our democracy and good governance.

“Most important, I think, are some of the new sections we have added, in the areas of technology, the smart card reader, and collation, which has been an area of great concern.

“Collation of results after the polling units and some of the additions we put on the electronic way by which the compilation of results can be done, I think, will go a long way to reduce some of the irregularities we have seen before.”

Despite the delay of assent to the electoral act amendment bill, stakeholders concern is that INEC must deliver credible election next year.

For instance, Hon. Ayoola Olawale. a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ibadan Southwest local government area of Oyo state warned that  INEC should not use the delay in Electoral Act amendment as an excuse for failure in the 2019 general elections.

Hon. Ayoola insisted that Nigerians will not accept any excuse from INEC, if the electoral body failed to conduct credible elections next year.

The politician declared that what matters most to Nigerians is the readiness of INEC to conduct free and fair polls and not full blown electronic voting.

Comrade Adesina Akinpelu, National Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the New Era Odua People’s Congress (OPC), expressed optimism that the existing legal frameworks should guarantee credible polls next year.

Akinpelu maintained that the problems with our electoral system have to do with the attitude of the political class, and not with the Electoral Act.

The New Era OPC urged Nigerians to be ready to resist any attempt by politicians to capitalise on the noticeable lapses to rig the 2019 general elections.

Akinpelu also identified poverty as the main weapon the political class uses to manipulate election in the country.

His words: “What should be the major concerned of well meaning Nigerians now is how to tackle the evil of vote buying. The politicians are capitalising on the high level of poverty in the country to induce voters with money and other material things during election.â€

With the Electoral system being modified by the National Assembly and INEC, would the nation get it right in years to come? Would the system address voting for a candidate of choice from anywhere in the nation or would the electronic system Nigerians are yearning for be made possible by the power that be, even though it has been passed by the lawmakers? These and other questions Nigerians are asking at this point in time.
