Driving Strategic Management through the ranks

Strategy is an expedient tool for organisational growth. A great and brilliant strategy can give an organisation an edge over its competitors; however, it requires a solid and thorough implementation to sustain such an advantage. There has been much ambiguity regarding how strategy is implemented in organisations. Most of the questions on how to implement strategic decisions are rooted in managers knowing how to win and sustain the winning logics over competitors; and creating solutions to perceived, real and unforeseen societal problems.

The company’s Chief Strategic Officer who (in recent times) exercises oversight functions on behalf of the CEO and middle-managers are faced with a new form of shock arising from markets disruptions, and the only way to certify that strategic decisions are implemented is to ensure that every employee within the organisation understands what it intends to achieve with its strategic plans. To this end, an organisation’s strategy is expected to be interpreted and implemented within the context in which it was developed. There are five stages involved in ensuring that employees achieve strategic goals; these include goal setting, goal analysis, strategy formation, strategy implementation, strategy monitoring.

Goal setting is the first factor to be considered during the strategy implementation process. Goals are very important to organisational success and hold employees accountable for certain outcomes. During goal setting, every individual within the team has a voice to contribute to how they perceive the organisation in relation to their competitors and what they want the organisation to achieve in a short and long-term basis. This process involves a strong focus on what is most important to the organisation in the present, and this is done by ensuring that every member of the team is directed on how to achieve those goals.

For example, after a careful study of the organisation’s challenges, goals may be developed to ensure that the organisation is ranked among top three companies in the industry within a time frame. This goal is then broken down to bits (units and individuals) to ensure that employees are carried along.

The second stage involves goal analysis; every bit of the goal crafted is analysed to ensure that it is free from obscurity in its interpretation. Using the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound) approach, it is easier for organisations to have clarity on what they intend to embark on. For instance, two companies set the same goals and company A’s goal reads, “increase customer base while company B put their goal as “ensure that we increase our customer base by targeting customers within the age of 18-35 in the rural parts of the state for financial inclusivity by the end of this month.

How does this goal fit the SMART criteria? From the two goals, it is evident that company B’s goal is specific, as it states exactly what the employees are expected to do. This goal is also measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound by stating what time the project is expected to be delivered, and it is tied into the key responsibilities of specific departments. It also set out a time to achieve the proposed goal within a specific period.

The third stage involves strategy formation. Strategy formation involves proper scanning of the internal and external factors that affect the organisation. This understanding helps to identify clear advantages that can be navigated for successful competition. This may be done by investigating what is in operation within the industry, and what competitors are offering to customers. A step forward may involve identifying customer needs that competitors are not offering. These ideas drive the type of strategy developed to enhance the organisation’s scope of meeting their customers’ needs.

The fourth stage, strategy implementation deals with the step-by-step approach of ensuring that the developed strategy is executed efficiently. The organisation may take a top-down (from management to the least employee) or bottom-up approach for the strategy implementation. An unimplemented strategy is equivalent to no strategy. Accordingly, the 3Cs (Clarify, Communicate and Cascade) of strategy implementation can be used during this stage. Clarifying the strategy means that every employee (even the employee manning the gate) have a clear understanding of the strategy. The language should be simple and free from professional jargon.

Communicating the strategy means that every possible means is employed to ensure that information about the strategy reaches every employee. This may be in form of electronic or face-to-face interactions. Cascade involves carrying everyone along. In this case, managers are tasked with how to practise what has been communicated in their units or departments.

Strategy thus becomes a reality through practice and the last stage, strategy monitoring involves regular observations, checks, and measurements of activities that have been developed to engender the organisation’s growth. This helps to assure that what is developed is really what is being done within the employees’ framework. This may be in form of feedback, survey (customers and employees) and direct report from observations.

The ability to implement a well-crafted strategy is viewed as considerably important, and in fact more important than strategy formulation. This is because strategy implementation, rather than strategy formulation, is the key to superior organisational performance. The high failure rate of strategy implementation efforts is well documented, and barriers to effective strategy implementation exist. Lack of leadership and specifically, strategic leadership, at the top of the organisation has been identified as one of these major barriers. In turn, strategic leadership is also viewed as a key driver for effective strategy implementation.

Unfortunately, leaders must effectively engage followers to drive organisational goals rather than engender a silos mentality. Carrying out a successful strategy is not an abstract activity, nor is it a boardroom affair; rather it is a pursuit that requires the input of all employees within the ranks. To effectively carry out a good strategic management, it is required that a Chief Strategic Officer is engaged. This is a new portfolio in the management ecosystem and its functions are different from those of the Chief Financial Officer, Chief Risk Officer, and others.

Lifestyle: Australia is reeling after the son of a rock music legend was allegedly murdered by one of his best friends

null

Liam Anderson is the son of Gary “Angry Anderson, is the lead singer of Rose Tattoo, a hugely iconic Aussie rock band.

Martin Philbey/Redferns

  • The son of an Australian rock music legend was killed by one of his best friends on Sunday morning.
  • Confused witnesses mistook over half an hour of Liam Anderson's cries for help as just the noises of the first 'boot camp' exercisers of a Sydney summer.
  • It's a bitter tragedy that twists a familiarly Australian milieu – two best friends, dawn at the beach on the hottest day of the year so far, the sounds of a summer park floating outside an open window.

SYDNEY – The past weekend brought a mini heatwave to Australia’s biggest city.

Down near Manly beach on the north side of Sydney Harbour, the surf was strong. Summer is on its way.

But early on Sunday morning while residents in beachside apartments apparently listened on, the 26-year-old son of one of Australia's greatest rock legends was allegedly being beaten to death by one of his best friends.

Liam’s father, Gary “Angry Anderson, is the lead singer of Rose Tattoo, a hugely iconic Aussie rock band.

He was on tour with his band in Perth when he was told of his son’s death. He rushed back to Sydney overnight.

The star’s eldest son Galen reportedly broke the news to his dad by phone.

Details are still scarce, but what police have reported describes a horrifying scene of prolonged violence at a beachside park.

Flame was allegedly found early Sunday standing over the bloodied body of Liam Anderson. Police say he was still beating on Anderson as officers arrived and confronted him at a well-known park, Pavilion Reserve.

The officers eventually had to resort to pepper spray to contain him.

Detective Inspector Michael Boutouridis told reporters the attack on Anderson was targeted and the men were known to one another. Their social media profiles confirm that they were good friends.

The detective described a man beyond control in a “brutal killing and a “graphic sight.

“It was quite a bloody scene, Boutouridis said.

“The man we have in custody was violent and it took a number of police officers to subdue and arrest him… pepper spray was used and significant force was used to arrest him.â€

An emergency services helicopter – a common sight for surfers off Manly Heads – was set to pick up Liam but he died at the scene.

On Sunday afternoon, a statement was issued on behalf of Angry, confirming Liam's death and asking the media and public to respect the family’s privacy.

Flame was formally charged with the murder today.

How it happened

The Daily Telegraph retraced the pair's steps that night, following the pair as they moved from the Sydney city in the early evening onto a party in an apartment near the park and they left together before the alleged assault occurred.

Witnesses have come forward and described Sunday morning's events to local television.

Many local residents said they heard noises all morning. Common sounds, or so they thought – yelling, groaning, shouting, exhaling – and just assumed it was coming from a local “boot campâ€ – a group exercise format that’s a common sight on Sydney’s northern beaches.

One local woman said she heard a man exhaling very loudly and yelling, before he would exhale again.

“I just heard a lot of, say for at least half an hour, moaning, the woman told Sydney's Channel Seven.

“Then we found out it was obviously him being kicked or stabbed.

"We should have looked out but we didn’t… It just sound like a guy doing boot camp, running up the hill and exhaling.â€

Flame has appeared in Manly court, wearing a long-sleeved white jumper, he "smiled from ear to ear at a person he knew in the public gallery, news.com.au reported.

He did not apply for bail and it was refused.

PDP Spends Half A Billion Naira To Launder Atiku’s Image – VON DG

ENUGU – Osita Okechukwu, the Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON) and chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) has mocked the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for spending almost half a billion naira, just to launder the image of its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Okechukwu said such a whooping expenditure once more clearly shows that the leading opposition party, PDP’s unforced error in the choice of Atiku Abubakar, as its presidential flag bearer for the 2019 general elections.

“The unforced error of choosing Atiku is manifesting already as PDP has to engage in capital flight out of Nigeria, in an effort to launder the image of their candidate in the United States of America, the VON DG said in a statement on Sunday.

Okechukwu spoke against the backdrop of media reports that PDP signed a N400 million contract with a United States lobbyists, Brian Ballard, for Atiku.

He chided the PDP for paying N400 million to a United States lobbyist, a payment that could have been avoidable, if the party did not engage in Bureau de Change presidential primary.

He raised a poser: “Is it politically correct to dole out N400m, whereas internally displaced persons are languishing in Adamawa State, the home of Atiku Abubakar, need assistance?

Okechukwu equally frowned at Atiku’s very expensive strategic meeting at Dubai, United Arab Emirates with a large contingent of PDP chieftains and hangers on.

He said for Atiku to spend such a whooping fee on a Donald Trump lobbyist clearly shows that there are still lingering issues about his immigration status in the United States.

“Am in league with some PDP governors who frowned at Atiku’s cash-and-carry Port Harcourt victory, as it will be very difficult and expensive to clean up the mess our elder statesman and ex-president, Olusegun Obasanjo, splashed on him in the global arena, he said.

On the fact that Obasanjo has publicly pardoned Atiku, Okechukwu said that it is only Nigerians who can pardon anyone whose hand allegedly is deep in the cookie jar not someone who is also allegedly more or less culpable.

“If Atiku should embark on such an expensive lobby and expensive trip to Dubai to hold strategic meeting, it means that if he becomes President, Nigeria’s treasury will be in red, as he may be holding Shadow Federal Executive Council (FEC) meetings in Dubai, hence putting Buhari’s RRAP Projects in harms’ way.

“For me, choosing between Buhari and Atiku is akin to choosing between transparency and less than transparency. President Muhammadu Buhari has started putting Nigeria on the path to economic growth and development. Buhari has embarked on Road, Rail, Agriculture and Power (RRAP) projects, which full project circle will be the next four years.

“It is on record that he is building 5,000-kilometers of federal road, 5,000-kilometers of Standard Gauge Rail lines and additional 5,000 megawatts of electricity. RRAP Projects will definitely move Nigeria towards self-sufficiency in food production. He needs a second tenure to conclude these projects and fully position Nigeria on the path of growth.

“Nigerians should not be deceived by PDP and Atiku -One Chance Bus. They promise restructuring in six months in office. This is pontificating and grandstanding; as restructuring cannot be done with Fiat-Executive-Order. Any restructuring must adhere to Section 9 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. No short-cut to the amendment of the rigid constitution.

“Methinks that the choice of Atiku was an unforced error, as their pledges, actions and mannerisms show that their ulterior intendment is to come back and continue 16 years of squander-mania (1999-2015). Nigerians must rise up and vote for Buhari, Okechukwu said.
