Young people’s mental health is a ticking time-bomb and nobody is talking about it

For Adamu Bello*, it was arduous understanding the waves of emotions hitting him and articulating how he felt to his parents and family was just an uphill task.

“I have never heard anything about ‘mental health’ at home or school, said the 16-year-old who was diagnosed with Mixed Anxiety-Depressive Disorder (MADD) about a year ago.

Bello is just one of the thousands of Nigerian youths caught in the web of moribund mental health care in Nigeria.

In Nigeria today, attitude towards mental illness is gravely coloured with prejudice and misconceptions. It is believed that an estimated 20% – 30% of the population suffer from mental illnesses, regrettably, the level of awareness on mental health issues amongst the Nigerian public is considerably dismal.

“When I was told that I was on the verge of being clinically depressed by a counsellor with one of the mental health advocacy group, I sought help, Lanre Ibiyemi*.

“My mother-in-law was told that my problem was spiritual.

This type of belief is one of the major problems facing mental health care in Africa’s most populous country. Its large army of youths employed or not is even more at risk.

“Adolescence and the early years of adulthood are a time of life when many changes occur, for example changing schools, leaving home, and starting university or a new job, the World Health Organisation said in commemoration of this year’s World Mental Health Day, which was focused on mental health issues confronting youth and young adults in our ever-changing world today.

“For many, these are exciting times. However, they can also be times of stress and apprehension.

Globally, it is estimated that 10-20% of adolescents experience mental health conditions. Half of all mental health conditions start by 14 years of age, but most cases are undetected and untreated. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among people who fall within the (15 – 29) age bracket. Depression in adolescents is a major risk factor for suicide, the second-to-third leading cause of death in this demographic.

Girls are two times more likely than boys to be diagnosed with depression in adolescence and throughout the course of their life. But boys have issues with anger and engage in risky behaviours. Research also further proves that gender-based differences contribute significantly to the prevalence of mental health issues among young persons.

Lower self-esteem and anxiety over their body-image experienced by adolescent girls when compared to boys in the same age group is known to result in a higher prevalence of depression and of eating disorders in adolescent girls when compared to adolescent boys. In adults, there is a high incidence of depression and anxiety among women, while antisocial behaviours and substance use disorders are higher in men.

“Adolescence can be a turbulent time in a person’s life;  it is a phase when a child is transitioning into an adult,  Dr Dami Ajayi, Senior Registrar, Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba.

“Many children go through some stressful events during this phase due to certain factors such as bad parenting, peer pressure, excess exposure to social media and the internet amongst others.

The cause of mental health illnesses in adolescents is varied but most cases can be traced to psychological trauma resulting from either physical assault – if a child is cruelly lashed, sexually abused or verbally abused. Self-loathing, dysfunctional family backgrounds, cyberbullying could also predispose adolescents to episodes of disruptive behaviours, leading to depression and suicidal thoughts.

Although there is a rising research on the mental health literacy of adults, there is yet to be a parallel interest in the mental health literacy of young people in Nigeria. Some of the policies on mental health and development in Nigeria –  the Mental Health Policy formulated in 1991, National Adolescent Health Policy (NAHP), and National Youth Policy (NYP) – do not earnestly address the issues of mental health among adolescents and young persons.

And there is a lacuna on data/statistics concerning the prevalence, pattern of psychiatric disorders among young persons in Nigeria.

The result of this information gap is the continual disregard for mental health issues and the need for preventive services for young persons. It is important to understand the rate and distribution of these disorders among the population, to improve the health conditions of adolescents with psychiatric disorders.

Young people’s mental health is a ticking time-bomb and nobody is talking about it

Approve N30,000 before Tuesday to avert strike, NECA urges Buhari

NECAThe umbrella body of the Organised Private Sector, NECA, on Sunday, said it supported an upward review of the minimum wage to N30,000, while calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to approve of the new minimum wage before Tuesday to avert the looming strike declared by the organised labour.

In a statement by its Director General, O. A. Oshinowo, NECA said though government did express preference for a lower figure than N30,000, the tripartite National Minimum Wage Committee actually resolved that N30,000 was a most reasonable figure to be recommended to Buhari.

NECA however directed its local unions to begin to enlighten workers on the fact that employers were also in support of the N30,000 new minimum wage in the event that Buhari failed to approve of the N30,000 proposal before Tuesday,

On commencement of strike, NECA called on employers to respect the workers reluctance to work, and explore means to recover days lost to the strike.

ALSO READ: Let’s avoid another industrial action by labour

The body added that it had obtained assurances of the leadership of organized labour not to resort to damage of companies’ properties, in a bid to enforce the strike, while urging leadership of companies not to compromise the safety of their workers.

The statement read, in parts, “It is important we fill you in, as follows, on the position of the Organised Private Sector on this issue: – All through the process and discussions at the Tripartite National Minimum Wage Committee.

“Our position was N25, 000.00 per month proposed from the very beginning. – We, however, supported the proposal of N30, 000.00 on the last day of the committee’s sitting to avert a follow -up national strike.

“Besides, N30, 000.00 per month was within our mandate, which we considered very reasonable; more so, when Organised Labour was willing to trade off its position of N45, 000.00 for that lower figure.

“Though government did express preference for a lower figure than N30, 000.00 per month, the Committee insisted that it would be a reasonable figure to recommend to Mr. President.

“Following the conundrum that followed this outcome, our message to all has been that:  It is important for all parties to respect the principle, procedure and outcome of the NMW Committee on wage setting. “Bearing in mind that past sessions of the NMW discussion have been guided by this time tested approach, the current session should not and cannot be any different in the interest of promoting an orderly system of industrial relations that is immune to political manipulation.

“In the light of the above, the next step in the process is for the Chairperson of the Committee to forward to Mr President the report of the Committee including its recommendations of N30, 000.00 per month National Minimum Wage, while noting any minority views in the course of arriving at this position.

“We are hoping that in order to forestall the planned strike by Organised labour, the above position would be given effect before Tuesday, 6th November for Mr. President to set in motion the process of giving legal teeth to a new National Minimum Wage, which government in its wisdom, taking note of the entirety of the recommendations of the NMW Committee, is at liberty to take decision on. We are aware there is already a move in that direction.

“We are already in touch with the leadership of Organised Labour and we do have their assurances that they will ensure that the strike does not degenerate into mayhem and wanton damage of companies’ properties.

5 major highlights from the 2018 MTV Europe Music Awards

The 2018 MTV EMAs held in Bilbao, Spain, on Sunday, November 4, witnessed a number of standout performances, shock wins and memorable speeches.

The 2018 MTV European Music Awards hosted by American singer Hailee Steinfield delivered a memorable night in the history of the music event.

Held at the Bizkaia Arena, Bilbao Exhibition Centre in Spain, the night witnessed breath-taking performances from Nicki Minaj and Little Mix's opening set to Janet Jackson's energetic showing with Camila Cabello and Nicki Minaj emerging as the biggest winners on the night with four and three awards respectively.

Nigeria's Tiwa Savage also made history becoming the first female artist to win the award for the 'Best African Act' ahead of the likes of Davido and Distruction Boyz from South Africa.

Here are five major highlights from the 2018 MTV EMAs

Tiwa Savage's win

It came as a shock in certain quarters when her name was announced as the winner of the quite competitive category ahead of Davido, who had earlier in the year picked the BET Awards for 'Best International Act' in June at the expense of Tiwa Savage who was also nominated in the category.

But there is no doubt that this win is one recognition fully deserved by the MAVIN first lady for all her hardwork and consistency on the scene, especially in the year under review.

Janet Jackson's performance

The legendary member of the Jackson family, Janet Jackson, who also bagged the special award for 'Global Icon' was in fine form on the night.

During her set, Janet dressed in a flowing outfit rolled back the years with her bare-footed grand entrance, bubbly dancesteps, flipping effortlessly through her intense choreography as she sang both old and new singles in 'Made for Now', 'Rhythm Nation' and the 2001 released anthem 'All for You.'

Camila Cabello wins big

Indeed a star is born with the Cuban/American singer, Camila Cabello, who was the night's biggest winner with four awards out of her six nominations.

The 'Havana' singer bagged the awards for 'Best Artist', 'Best Video', 'Best US Act' and 'Best Song'  emerging victorious over Ariana Grande, who was nominated in five of the six categories that she was also nominated for.

After winning the 'Best Video' award, she said in delight, ''I don’t know what to say! I feel so lucky to even be here tonight, I feel so lucky to even be nominated. Shout out to my wife Ariana who is also nominated.''

A night of celebration for the female artists

From the host of the event, Haille Steinfield to the big winners, Camilla Cabello and Nicki Minaj to Janet Jackson, Little Mix and Tiwa Savage, the 2018 edition of the MTV EMAs celebrated the artistry and contributions of female artists to the scene in a way like never before.

Bebe Rexha's army of 100 dancers

American singer, Bebe Rexha went all out with her set by enlisting an army of 100 dancers for the performance of her hit single, 'I'm a Mess' at the 2018 MTV EMAs.

Bebe emerged from an onstage bathtub in an eye-catching red outfit, moving through her crowd of dancers who were dressed in priest robes as she rendered her song.

Her set ended with the singer being carried off stage by the dancers to a loud ovation from the audience.

NUJ Worries Over Deplorable Road Network In Niger

NUJ

Minna – The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed concern over the deplorable condition of intra and inter-state roads in Niger State and called on the Governor Abubarkar Sani Bello-led administration to declare a state of emergency on the sector.

Meanwhile, the NUJ has lifted the suspension on the State Correspondent of Daily Independent Newspaper and former Correspondent’s Chapel Secretary, Chinwendu Nnadozie, after the withdrawal of case instituted against the union. Nnadozie has withdrawn the case against the union and so her suspension should be lifted.

During the state congress, which took place at the IBB Pen House, Minna at the weekend, members were specific about the deplorable condition of intra-state roads, Chanchaga through the Minna City gate to Suleja in particular and advised the government to engage only competent construction companies to handle such projects for quality and durable jobs.

A communiqué issued at the end of the State Council Congress at the weekend and signed by Daniel Atori, Chairman of Communique Committee, advised the state government to re-direct movements for all articulated vehicles plying the state to reduce damages.

Bad road networks in Niger State is getting worse by the day, the union said, and therefore, advised that the state government check the trend by re-routing movements of articulated vehicles passing through Minna, the state capital, to the by-pass.

Heavy duty vehicles, apart from shortening the lifespan of roads through undue wearing and tearing, cause unnecessary gridlocks within Minna metropolis, hence the need for the government to take action by diverting their movements to by-pass to also avoid accidents.

The communiqué also noted with concern the build-up to the 2019 general elections and, therefore, wants the state government to take proactive measures against all forms of possible security traits because, “Prevention is always better and less expensive than cure.

The Niger State NUJ said that politicians tend to overheat the polity in their campaigns, adding that this will not augur well for state. Therefore, the union urged transparency and sincerity in their campaigns towards next year’s general elections to avoid chaos.

The state government should take proactive measures by encouraging security agencies to promptly monitor the entire state, particular some flash-points to check possible infiltration of extremist groups and putting them on watch list.

Chinwendu was removed as Correspondent’s Chapel Secretary and suspended by the former council executive over alleged, ‘anti-union’ activities and she subsequently took the union to Court for want of evidence.

The intervention of some stakeholders who brokered peace and ensured successful out-of-court settlement and amicable resolution of the confusion generated by her suspension in the state NUJ and its affiliate, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ).

Buhari's aide says 2019 is a battle between light and darkness

Buhari's aide says 2019 is a contest between light, darkness

The presidency believes Nigerians will vote for continuity so that the president can consolidate on the achievements of his first term.

President Muhammadu Buhari's Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, has described the 2019 presidential election as a contest between light and darkness that he expects the president to win.

While speaking during an interview on Channels Television's Politics Today on Sunday, November 4, 2018, the president's spokesperson said Nigerians will decide on the right candidate who'll move the nation forward.

He said, "What we know is that a contest is ahead and it is going to be a contest between light and darkness, between integrity and people who have question marks; between a man whose life is plain and transparent and a man with so much opacity that you can't say, well, this is his life, this is his background and this is how he got this and that.

"It's going to be a fair contest and, at the end of the day, Nigerians will decide."

The 2019 presidential election, scheduled for February 16, 2019, is expected to be closely-fought between President Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, of the People's Democratic Party (PDP).

79 candidates will contest in the election, the highest number ever in Nigeria's electoral history.

Buhari will win 2019 election with a wide margin – Presidency

During Sunday's interview, Adesina also expressed his belief that President Buhari will win with a wider margin than he used to win the 2015 contest.

He said he believes Nigerians will vote for continuity so that the president can consolidate on the achievements of his first term.

He said, "Our conviction is that the party will win by a wider margin, far wider margin, than in 2015. Look around, what is the alternative? Can we afford to take the country back into the infamous past? It would be very sad. It would be quite shameful to take Nigeria back into the past.

"The best option for Nigeria is a continuity of what we have now so that it can be properly consolidated for a better future and Nigerians know it.

"The option is President Buhari to be re-elected. Our confidence is that President Buhari will win the election."

In 2015, the president won with 15,424,921 votes, 2.5 million votes more than second-placed Goodluck Jonathan who won 12,853,162 votes. It was the first time an opposition candidate had beaten an incumbent president in a democratic election.

Court Injunction Can’t Resolve Nigerian Workers’ Demand For N30,000 Minimum Wage – Umeh

NLC

Awka – As the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) gears up for its planned November 6 indefinite strike on account of the Federal Government’s inability to accept payment of N30,000 new minimum wage, Victor Umeh, the Senator representing Anambra-Central Senatorial District, has said that the Federal Government’s option for a court order to stop the strike will not resolve the issue, but instead further aggravate the situation.

Umeh stated this at the Awka-South local government headquarters at the weekend while responding to questions from journalists on the planned industrial action by NLC.

He said that the Federal Government should not bluff workers when dealing with them, pointing out that even if the Federal Government got a court order to stop Labour from embarking on strike, workers must press home  their demands for better working conditions and welfare packages.

The Senator noted that the Federal Government should engage Labour in a meaningful dialogue and that the only dialogue was to consider the money workers were demanding for and whether in all sincerity a Nigerian worker could run a home with N22,500 salary per month as proposed by some governors.

He also stressed that Nigerian workers do not have living wage and that the Federal Government should no longer pretend that there was no money when, according to him, a lot of people were living in affluence while workers languish in abject penury.

According to him, what Nigerian workers deserve were living wage and not the N30,000 they were currently agitating for, emphasising that “there is nobody in his employ that earns below N40,000 a month. Many people earn N70,000, N50,000, N100,000 and above. So, I don’t know why government is very adamant in the plight of workers.

Some governors are saying that they will pay workers N22,500; how can a worker use N22,500 a month to look after his or her family? “

Umeh continued: “I work in the Senate and I know that there’s money we appropriated in the budget; this year alone over N9 trillion was in the budget and N500 billion was dedicated to special projects to fight poverty. Where is the money?”

“They said they spent about N24 billion every month; I am from Anambra State and I have not seen where the money was applied. Government should learn how to manage their resources and pay workers the money they are asking for. My gateman earns about N35,000 every month even cleaners. So why should government say a man with about seven children should go home with N22,500 a month? “

He maintained that government should know that it was not only those in leadership positions that should have access to the nation’s treasury and that N30,000 can’t solve problems in homes. He said leaders should cut down on excess expenditures, alleging that so much money was being filtered away through conduit pipes.
