EFCC Re-Arraigns Ladoja Over Alleged N4.7bn Fraud

rasheed ladoja

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday re-arraigned former Oyo State Governor Rashidi Ladoja over alleged N4.7 billion fraud.

The re-arraignment followed an amendment of the charge by the EFCC.

Ladoja was charged with converting N4.7 billion from the state treasury to his personal use.

He was re-arraigned along with his former Commissioner for Finance Waheed Akanbi, on 11 counts charge of Money Laundering and unlawful conversion of public funds.

They however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

In the amended charge, EFCC added that Ladoja allegedly “compelled a broker to sell the state’s shares.

The prosecution alleged that the former governor did not remit N1.9 billion realised from the sale of the shares.

The commission told the court that the money allegedly went to Ladoja, his family and friends and was not refunded.

EFCC had closed its case before the amendment, but rather than open their defence, the accused opted to file no-case submissions.

Moving the no-case submissions on Monday, Ladoja’s lawyer, Mr Bolaji Onilenla, said EFCC did not establish a prima facie case against his client.

During trial, a prosecution’s witness, Mr Abubakar Madaki, an EFCC Investigator, had testified that the shares, worth N6.6billion, were sold without the state executive council’s resolution.

According to the investigator, Ladoja engaged Fountain Securities as a portfolio manager to sell the shares at a discounted rate, adding that the shares were acquired by McLace Securities.

However, Ladoja’s counsel had faulted Madaki’s evidence, arguing that there were no complaints by the state that the shares were sold illegally.

“We urge the court to hold that there was no prima-facie case against the first defendant and we urge the court to discharge and acquit him accordingly, Onilenla said.

Counsel for Akanbi, Mr Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN), said what the prosecution witnesses tesified in their evidences were not sufficient to ask the accused to enter a defence.

“We urge the court to uphold the no-case submission of the second defendant, he said.

But the prosecutor, Mr Olabisi Oluwafemi, urged the court to order the accused to open their defence.

He said the evidence given by the prosecution witnesses had raised several questions for which the accused persons should be called upon to answer.

Justice Mohammed Idris adjourned until Nov. 12 for continuation of hearing.

In the charge, the accused were alleged to have conspired to siphon and launder N4.7 billion from the coffers of Oyo State Government.

The EFCC also accused them of converting N1.9 billion belonging to the state for their personal use through the account of a company known as Heritage Apartments Ltd.

The anti-graft agency claimed that the accused retained the money sometime in 2007 in spite of the knowledge that it was proceeds from a criminal activity.

Ladoja was accused of removing 600,000 pounds from the state coffers in 2007 and sent to his daughter, Bimpe, in London.

In addition, the ex-governor was accused of converting N42 million belonging to the state for his personal use and subsequently used same to purchase an armoured Land Cruiser.

The EFCC added that Ladoja converted N728 million and N77 million at different times in 2007 for his personal use and transferred same to Bistrum Investments for the purchase of a property in Ibadan.

The offences contravene the the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2004, according to the EFCC.

Court halts Kano Assembly from probing Ganduje over bribery allegation

Abdullahi Ganduje

A High court in Kano State has stopped Kano Assembly from probing an alleged $5 million bribery against the state’s governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

The presiding judge, Justice A.T. Badamasi gave the order on Monday while ruling on an ex-parte application by one Muhammad Zubair, the National Coordinator of Lawyers for Sustainable Democratization of Nigeria.

Badamasi granted the application filed on behalf of the plaintiff by his counsel, Nuraini Jimoh.

Joined as defendants in the suit were the Kano State House of Assembly, the House committee investigating the allegation against  Ganduje, and the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice in the state.

Daily Nigerian, an online medium published four videos in October showing someone it said was Ganduje receiving wads of cash, allegedly kickbacks, from contractors handling state projects.

The state assembly invited the governor to appear before last Friday to answer questions concerning the allegation.

He did not honour the invitation but instead sent the commissioner for information Muhammad Garba to represent him.

Garba denied the governor took bribe.

“His Excellency has categorically and unapologetically denied collection of bribe as alleged by Daily Nigerian. His Excellency has not collected and will never collect bribe. The allegation is injurious and damaging to his personality, he said.

But the publisher of Daily Nigerian  Ja’afar Ja’afar, who last Monday appeared before the panel investigating insisted that the person in the video seen collecting bribe was the governor. He said the evidence was received from a whistle-blower.

Kano Labour Leader Reacts To Ganduje’s Bribery Video

Mr Isah Tijjani, the former Deputy National President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, ‎has advised Kano residents against jumping to a conclusion over a video clip showing Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje allegedly collecting bribes from contractors ‎as the matter is under investigation.‎

Tijani gave the advice on Monday in Kano while briefing newsmen on the allegations against the governor.‎

He appealed to ‎the public to wait for the report of the investigative committee set up by the state Assembly to ascertain the authenticity of the video clips on the allegations.‎

‎

According to him, “Whoever says this is what happened without any proof, is not being just to himself,  to the governor, to the state and to the public at large.

“I urge the public particularly the good people of Kano state not to jump to conclusion over the allegation and to be patient and wait for the outcome of the investigation from the appropriate body.‎

“Those clips were not authenticated by any relevant body, which still places them as a mere allegation and not verified and the governor
is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

“I am not happy about it and is not something to be happy about. That is why it needs following of procedures in dealing with such delicate issues to even understand it clearly.

“Because this is a video clip showing someone purported to be the governor allegedly collecting bundles of cash from a contractor, Tijani said.‎

An online newspaper, Daily Nigerian had recently released video clips, showing Gov. Ganduje allegedly collecting bribes from contractors.‎

This prompted the Kano State House of Assembly to constitute a seven-man committee to investigate the authenticity of the video recording of alleged bribe taking by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

It beat expectations, which placed it in the $35-40 million range, and grossed another $72.5 million internationally. But it's not the biggest music biopic opening of all time.

Films that portray the lives of music legends are a dime a dozen, but only a few have become box-office success stories, including "Bohemian Rhapsody" and the NWA biopic, "Straight Outta Compton."

Below are the six music biopics with the biggest opening weekends ever:

Taking us back to where it all began, Straight Outta Compton tells the true story of how these cultural rebels—armed only with their lyrics, swagger, bravado and raw talent—stood up to the authorities that meant to keep them down and formed the world’s most dangerous group, N.W.A. And as they spoke the truth that no one had before and exposed life in the hood, their voice ignited a social revolution that is still reverberating today."

People doubting Buhari's certificate have run out of ideas – Femi Adesina

The Presidency Sunday said the controversies surrounding the issuance of an attestation of result to President Muhammadu Buhari was the handwork of people who have “run out of ideas.”

“I will call this superfluity of nothingness, storm in a teacup, coming from a party that has run out of ideas,” said presidential spokesman Femi Adesina on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

Buhari was issued the attestation on Friday by the registrar of the West African Examination Council in Nigeria Iyi Uwadie, years after he was accused of not having a West African School Certificate.

The President has insisted that he sat for the exams and that his certificates were with the Nigerian military.

But after WAEC gave him the attestation on Friday critic said it was done to save face, noting that there was nothing to indicate that Buhari actually wrote and passed the exams.

Opposition People’s Democratic Party said the certificate issued to the president may have been forged. It pointed to the absence of examination number as a pointer to the fact that the certificate is a “scam”.

“Does it not smack of high level scam that the same WAEC, which, in 2015, confirmed that it does not have records of President Buhari’s certificate, now had to send officials to present Mr. President with an attestation, that has no original certificate number,” the party said in a statement on Sunday.

But Adesina said critics were bad losers, who “re not just satisfied with anything.” (edited)

The first review of Chigozie Obioma's An Orchestra of Minorities is here!

The first review of Chigozie Obioma's An Orchestra of Minorities

After his hooking debut, The Fishermen, Chigozie Obioma is back with his sophomore novel which already has people talking.

It's all praises from the Publishers Weekly in the first review for Chigozie Obioma's second novel.

Chigozie Obioma is the author of The Fishermen, the intriguing coming-of-age tale of four brothers in 1990s Akure. The novel introduced the world to Obioma's ability to tell ordinary stories in an epic way — stories that leave his readers mulling over for days.

Earlier this year, he announced the coming of his second novel, An Orchestra of Minorities, published by Little, Brown. Described by its publishers as “an epic of Igbo civilisation, the novel is narrated by the protagonist’s chi, his guardian spirit/god in Igbo cosmology.

This delicious synopsis was delivered in January to the ears of excited fans, who have been eager to read another of Obioma's intricately-spun tales. Now, the first review of the novel has been released on Publishers weekly, and it gives a bit of a glimpse into what to expect:

"Set in Umuahia, Nigeria, Man Booker finalist Obioma’s unforgettable second novel (after The Fishermen) follows the saga of Chinonso, a young and doomed poultry farmer. The story is narrated by Chinonso’s chi, the guardian spirit that bridges humans and the divine in Igbo cosmology; this narrator functions as both advocate and Greek chorus in the tragedy that unfolds.

Orphaned and broken by his father’s death, Chinonso spends his life in isolation caring for his beloved chickens, until he sees a woman preparing to jump to her death off a bridge. She turns out to be Ndali, the daughter of a prominent local family. Suicidal in the wake of a broken engagement, Ndali is drawn to Chinonso’s fierce protectiveness of his flock, seeing in him a steadiness and resoluteness of character, but she’s blind to the anger and sorrow at his core. The two quickly fall in love, despite her family’s mounting objections. In a bid to win their approval, Chinonso takes up an old acquaintance on the offer of university education in Cyprus, selling his family’s property and possessions to pay for it. The con is painful and clear as day; Chinonso is robbed blind and left stranded in an alien land. After he meets a sympathetic nurse, a moment of violence lands Chinonso in jail, where he must bide his time—still burning with a violent determination to reclaim the life he lost and punish those responsible.

Obioma’s novel is electrifying, a meticulously crafted character drama told with emotional intensity. His invention, combining Igbo folklore and Greek tragedy in the context of modern Nigeria, makes for a rich, enchanting experience. (Jan.)"

The debut that hooked the world

Set in the 1990s, The Fishermen is a coming of age debut that follows the lives of four brothers in Akure, Nigeria. The novel received accolades and praise from The Guardian and the New York Times, as well as numerous highly-acclaimed awards.

Since its initial publication 2015 by Pushkin Press, Chigozie Obioma’s The Fishermen has been translated into over 25 national languages. It has became one of Africa’s most awarded debuts. It won the 2015 FT/Oppenheimer Emerging Voices Award for Fiction, the 2016 Los Angeles Times Book Prize’s Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction, and the 2016 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work (Debut Author).

In addition to all the awards, it was shortlisted for the 2015 Man Booker Prize, the 2015 Guardian First Book Award, and the 2015 Center for Fiction First Novel Prize, as well as the longlists for the 2015 Etisalat Prize for Literature and the 2016 International Dylan Thomas Prize.

The Fishermen has also, very recently, been adapted into a stage play.
