COP24: Buhari, Governors Arrive In Poland

President Muhammadu Buhari has arrived in Krakow, Poland, ahead of the 24th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP24) under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The conference is slated for between Dec. 2 and 4.

Buhari’s aide on New Media, Alhaji Bashir Ahmad, confirmed this development on his tweeter handle in Abuja.

He was accompanied on the trip by governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Yahaya Bello and Abubakar Bello of Enugu, Kogi and Niger States.

Others on his entourage include the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, the Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu, and the Minister of State for Environment, Ibrahim Jibrin
President Buhari and members of his entourage, who arrived at a Military Base Balice International Airport, Krakow, on Saturday evening, were `welcomed’ by snow as temperature dropped further to -3 degrees Centigrade.

COP24 Summit is being held at the International Conference Centre (MCK), Katowice, an industrial hub, about 100 kilometers from Krakow.

President Buhari’s first official engagement will be a town hall meeting in Krakow on Sunday evening, where he would meet and interact with Nigerians living in Poland.

The President will, during the Leaders’ Summit at COP24 on Monday morning, deliver a national statement, highlighting Nigeria’s commitment to addressing climate change by implementing the goals set out in its National Determined Contributions.

According to the organisers, the conference is expected to finalise the rules for implementation of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change under the Paris Agreement Work Programme (PAWP) – the rule book for implementation.

President Buhari’s spokesman, Mr Femi Adesina, had on Friday in a statement, disclosed that during the Summit at COP24, Buhari would deliver a national statement highlighting Nigeria’s commitment to address climate change by implementing the goals in its National Determined Contributions.

He said the president would also use the occasion to accentuate Nigeria’s willingness to work with international partners to reverse the negative effects of climate change in Africa and the world over.

Adesina said the president would also highlight the need for developed nations to scale up their emission reduction activities, to limit the increase in average global temperatures to well below 2 degrees centigrade between now and 2020.

The Leaders’ Summit is expected to adopt a ‘‘Declaration on Solidarity and Just Transition Silesia,’’ – named after the region of Poland where this year’s climate conference is taking place.

He observed that Nigeria, as a member of the Committee of the African Heads of State on Climate Change, would continue to address the challenges occasioned by climate change.

The committee is a group of 10 African countries that meets and takes positions concerning issues of climate change on behalf of the continent.

“Nigeria has been at the forefront of advancing policies and initiatives aimed at addressing significant challenges occasioned by climate change such as reviving the Lake Chad, halting and reversing desertification, flooding, ocean surge and oil spillage.

Adesina, who is the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, said that President Buhari would continue to champion these pressing issues at COP24 in Katowice, among others.

He also said the president would reiterate Nigeria’s position on the need for African countries to access financial resources, especially the Green Climate Fund to draw up climate change adaptation policies and actions for implementation.

“The Nigerian delegation will also showcase the policy measures and actions of the Federal Government at ensuring environmental sustainability and effectively combating climate change through several side events within the Nigerian pavilion.

“While in Poland, President Buhari will hold an interactive session with the Nigerian community in that country.

“The Nigerian leader is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with the President of Poland Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki,’’ the statement added.

Reject PDP, Senator Adeola Tells Nigerians

PDP

Sen. Olamilekan Adeola (Lagos West) has urged Nigerians to reject the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019, saying the party has nothing to offer the country.

Speaking with journalists at the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Ikeja, Adeola said the PDP lacked the vision to govern the country.

He noted that the 16 years of PDP in power was a waste as they did little or nothing to improve the lots of Nigerians.

Adeola said the All Progressives Congress (APC) had put the country on the path of progress in the last few years, and would achieve much more in 2019.

“Nigerians should reject the PDP in 2019; they have nothing to offer. They were in power for 16years and they achieved nothing.

“in fact the three years of the APC administration are better than the years of PDP in power. It was 16 wasted years. PDP is a failure, they should be rejected, he said.

The senator said one particular step that pointed to what he called the ineptitude of the PDP was the way they privatised the power sector.

Adeola alleged that the PDP sold power assets to friends and fronts all in the name of privatisation.

He said the hangover of the problem was still with the country till date.

The senator said electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs) foisted on the country had done little to add value to the power sector, and Nigeria would be better with replacements.

Adeola said he had acquitted himself remarkably well as senator representing Lagos West.

He said his emergence in the primaries of APC to represent the zone again in 2019 reflected the confidence party men and the people had in him.

Adeola said he had organised many empowerment programmes and executed many projects that had touched the lives of residents.

He listed some of the programmes as the distribution of 500 UTME forms to school leavers, granting University scholarships to 56 students, and the facilitation of entrepreneurship training for 600 youths.

Adeola said he had also facilitated tens of employments for graduates and other young people in the Federal civil service.

“In the area of infrastructure development of our district in assisting and complementing the efforts of Lagos State and Federal Government, I donated 10 500 KVA transformers to a community in each of the 10 LGAs that make up Lagos West, he said.

AdeoIa said he also facilitated the rehabilitation of Baale Olodi Apapa Road(Boundary-Berger-Suya-Kirikiri Bridge) and had sunk 28 boreholes spread across 28 Local Council Development Areas of the district.

“I also donated several 18-seater Toyota buses to Lagos West stakeholders including Obas, the Council of Baales, CDC, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), LASU student Union, the league of Imams, among others, he said.

Adeola said he was one of the active voices in the Senate, having sponsored so many important bills and contributed to the passage of others.

The senator promised to achieve much more in the upper chamber in 2019, if reelected, urging his constituents to give him the needed support.

Thousands of Islamists march in Jakarta ahead of elections

Thousands of Indonesian Islamists attend a rally in Jakarta on December 2, 2018, to commemorate the second anniversary of a demonstration which led to the fall of Jakarta's then Christian governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama. PRANANDITYA / AFP

Around 100,000 people marched in Indonesia’s capital Sunday to mark two years since a demonstration that led to the fall of Jakarta’s Christian ex-governor, as presidential candidates seek to rally support ahead of next year’s general election.

Former governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama was voted out of office and later jailed for two years for blasphemy following the 2016 protests, in a case seen as an example of rising religious intolerance in Muslim-majority Indonesia.

Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country, has seen its reputation for pluralism eroded by a surge in attacks on minorities.

Analysts say identity politics and rising intolerance are likely to feature prominently — along with the economy — in campaigning for next April’s general election across the sprawling Southeast Asian archipelago.

On Sunday, some 100,000 people joined the peaceful rally, with 23,000 officers securing the event, Jakarta police spokesman Argo Yuwono told AFP.

The demonstrators many dressed in white and carrying Islamic flags gathered at the National Monument, where former general and presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto spoke.

Subianto supported the rally that led to Purnama’s ouster in December 2016, and analysts say Sunday’s rally may have been politically motivated to boost his chance of winning the presidential elections set for April.

He will face President Joko Widodo, who has chosen conservative cleric Ma’ruf Amin as his vice presidential candidate, a move analysts think will bolster the president’s Islamic credentials.

Widodo also supported the 2016 rally, known as “212 demonstration” after the date when it was held — the second of December.

Nigeria Customs seizes N3.06bn worth of tramadol, other drugs at Onne port

TramadolTHE Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has seized nine 40ft containers of tramadol and other controlled drugs with duty paid value of N3.06 billion at Onne Port, Rivers.

Mr Augustine Chidi, the Deputy Comptroller General of Customs in-charge of Enforcement, Investigation and Inspection, announced the seizure in Port Harcourt.

Chidi said the containers were falsely declared as containing PVC ball valves and general goods.

“You will recall that last week, Nigerian Customs Service announced the seizure of 50 containers in Lagos.

“This brings to a total of 59 containers of controlled drugs so far seized within this month,’’ Chidi said.

He said that the importation contravened “Section 46 of Customs and Excise Management Act Cap 45 LFN’’.

Chidi said that the Comptroller General of Customs, retired Col. Hameed Ali, ordered a thorough investigation to bring perpetrators to justice.

“Let me assure you that the NCS will not relent on its role of contributing to national economic and security well-being of Nigerians by ensuring that items that can negatively affect the citizenry are not allowed into the country,’’ he said.

According to him, NCS is increasingly relying on intelligence and technology to make it difficult for smugglers to have their way.

He called on the public, especially border community dwellers and port users to desist from importing illicit goods.

Chidi also called for public support for better performance by NCS and expressed concern that Nigeria was experiencing increasing attempts by unpatriotic elements to smuggle dangerous drugs into the country.

He said the increasing smuggling of controlled drugs into the country could be traced to the Christmas and New Year season as well as the coming elections in 2019.

According to him, unscrupulous businessmen were exploiting the market provided by the seasons and elections in which some politicians might want to engage the youth in unwholesome activities.

“These elements are morally bankrupt and willing to make money at the expense of human lives. We must stop them as we all have a duty to protect our nation,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, the Controller, Area II Command of NCS, Comptroller Aliyu Saidu, said the command would perform better when it received one of the three scanners approved by the Federal Executive Council for the customs.

“It will greatly assist our command in checking crime and increase our revenue base,’’ Saidu said.

Multiple Grammy award-winning rapper, Eminem is no stranger to courting controversy as he has a long history of courting controversy with some of his explicit lyrics.

Now in a new track titled “Kick Off” which was released Friday night via a video posted on YouTube, the “Killshot” rapper has fans divided.

In the 11 minutes long song, Eminem raps about the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing during the Ariana Grande’s concert and also alleges that Justin Bieber dealt drugs at a Catholic school.

Those were not the only people he names dropped as actress Reese Witherspoon was not off-limits, either. Eminem painted a picture of a scene in which the actress was “nude, bruised, beat with a broom.”

He also referred to a woman named Christina whom many have theorised to be Christina Aguilera. He raps about her,

“F**k Christina with a plastic spoon, while I bump some G-Funk and blast some Snoop, ’cause her double g-cups are massive, huge!”
