NAMA commences installation of prefabricated pilot joint briefing offices

NAMA

Determined to digitalize the nation’s aeronautical information service (AIS), the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has commenced the installation of prefabricated pilot joint briefing offices nationwide.

The installation team which has completed work at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos has proceeded to another airport and is expected to continue the installation in 21 airports and three aerodromes nationwide.

There’ll never be peace in this country, until… —Ango Abdullahi

When operational, the prefabricated offices will provide a one-stop shop at the airside where crew members can obtain AIS briefing, meteorological information and make necessary payments at a single point in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Standard and Recommended Practices (SARPs).

The facility will also accommodate the equipment room for the VSAT network which is simultaneously being installed by the contractor.

Speaking on this development, the Managing Director of NAMA, Captain Folayele Akinkuotu said this was part of continuous efforts by the agency to enhance seamless and sustainable communication in the upper airspace just as he declared that the Satellite Lineup for the VSAT node at NAMA headquarters in Lagos will be completed within the week, while that of Abuja, Port Harcourt and other stations would follow in the next couple of days.

The NAMA boss revealed that the installation of 14 new Very High Frequency (VHF) radio sites which will ride on the new VSAT network was to commence simultaneously with these installations, even as he expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for its support and intervention in the final clearance of the agency’s VSAT equipment at the Apapa port.

Truckers shunning lifting of Hapag Lloyd’s containers —ANLCA

Truckers shunning lifting of Hapag Lloyd’s containers —ANLCA

ANLCA

FRESH indications have emerged that truck drivers at Nigerian ports are now avoiding importers with Hapag Lloyd containers, even as those agreeing to lift such containers have hiked their charges by 500 per cent.

Confirming this to newsmen in Lagos recently, Vice President of Association of Nigeria Licensed Customs service (ANLCA) Kayode Farinto said that ANLCA executives had to lead some of its top members on a fact finding mission to Hapag Lloyd’s office in Apapa to find out why truckers are avoiding their containers.

JUST IN: Edo lawmakers crisis: Reps direct IGP, DSS to shut down assembly complex

He said the management of the shipping company had tendered a defense, saying that the situation was aggravated because most truckers prefer to come directly to the port with empty containers rather than make use of container holding bays scattered around Lagos.

Farinto said the company has subsequently agreed to stop deducting container refunds for truckers with Hapag Lloyd containers once they have reached the queue, seeking access into the port.

“We have had several complaints from our members on operations of Hapag Lloyd, agents are saying that it is very expensive to handle their containers because transporters are charging extra to lift Hapag Lloyd containers, they collect over 500% extra.

“When we went there on a fact finding mission, they told us they have about four holding bays; Bollore, TICT, Creek Road and another at Orile.

“When we asked why it is difficult for our members to get transporters to carry their containers, they told us that some of our members prefer to bring the empty containers to the port.

“We also complained about the lack of convenience in the hall where they are doing documentation for release.

“They have said that once the container is on queue outside the terminal, agents should come and notify them so that they can stop deducting from the container deposit.”

Nigeria’s lawmakers’ unfair outburst

Tribune Online
Nigeria’s lawmakers’ unfair outburst

FAAN, suntail, drug barons, fire lagos airport, Nigerian airlines, NAMM, MMA2, decongest Lagos airport, aviation sector

Two weeks ago, the House of Representatives in Abuja was reported to have called on the Federal Ministry of Aviation, to liaise with all the aviation agencies to enforce all safety standards as prescribed in the aviation industry guidelines, so as to forestall future crashes in the country.

The house also urged the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to ensure that all aircraft in Nigeria were adequately maintained and certified airworthy before commencing operation, in order to prevent further ordeals.

In the same vein, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and the FAAN were also advised to prevail on aircraft owners to keep strict adherence with the rules of weather condition while flying.

While the lawmakers have the right to express their concerns on issues happening in the sector, the contradiction is however made manifest in the misrepresentation contained in some points raised by them which need to be corrected to reassure air travelers of safety and security across the airports.

Of all the issues raised by the different lawmakers, the most misleading aspect was the alleged importation of fairly used aircraft into the country by domestic airlines, calling on all of them to adhere strictly to the Nigeria’s aviation regulations in line with international best practices.

Agreed that most issues raised by the lawmakers were cogent to air transport safety particularly the death traps called runways at many of the airports which have been sending signals to the travelling public with rainy season rolling in.

Obviously, there are many challenges confronting the sector which require the National Assembly’s intervention, but this should not be used to mislead the public and even the world at large about the efforts being made by the airline operators to reposition domestic airline operations against all odds.

With due respect to the lawmakers, the position made by one of them alleging that the airline operators  import fairly used aircraft into the country was very unfair and capable of killing private investment.

For the fact that there are issues confronting the sector does not mean that the issues are caused by the aircraft, and without mincing words, at present, there is no Nigerian carrier flying unworthy airplanes.

It is on record today that airlines like Air Peace can compete with the mega carriers of this world because of the statuses of the aircraft in its fleet including Boeing 777-300. Just like Air Peace, Arik Air and Medview Airlines also have aircraft like Boeing 777-300 while Dana Air is expecting aircraft in that  family before the end of the year.

Most times, the challenges faced by the airlines have been traced to poor infrastructure at the airports, like the issue of poor runway which gets flooded and makes landing of aircraft dangerous during rainy season. Calling all aircraft flying domestic routes in Nigeria as fairly used is unjust and this is capable of creating fears in the minds of intending passengers and public.

Asking FAAN to ensure that all aircraft in Nigeria are adequately maintained and airworthy, has exposed the ignorance of the lawmakers on how things work in the sector as FAAN has nothing to do with the state of aircraft flying in the airspace.

Absolutely, they have the right to raise questions about safety issues but before doing so, there is the need for them to get acquainted with how things work, that is, knowing which agency is responsible for aircraft safety amongst other things before going public, which is necessary and will safe the country the embarrassment of portraying the country in negative light.

For a lawmaker to make a sweeping statement that all airlines  are operating with fairly use aircraft is loose and scary not only to flying, but also to private investment.

AS with many things Nigerian, those that should listen never do and those that should do something are never bothered. The word of Malcolm X sums up my next few paragraphs: “You’re not supposed to be so blind with patriotism that you can’t face reality. Wrong is wrong, no matter who says it”.

The myth ‘Aboki’ is supposedly an Hausa term that is used to describe the man up North; he may be Hausa, Nupe, Berom, Fulani, Shua, but largely he is ignorantly Hausa to all and poor; he is either a gateman, water vendor, tea seller, yam seller, sugarcane seller, fuel black marketer or black market forex dealer to that list.

BREAKING: Yinka Ayefele finally confirms wife’s delivery of triplets in US

Whatever he is, he is a symbolism today to other Nigerians of violence and false face of Islam. He is understandably misunderstood, add the herdsmen narrative. No other time than now has the North faced an identity crisis and fight within herself. Who are the Hausa, who are the Fulani and how about the Hausa/Fulani, what really is the place of the Islam North, real, media creation and how about the Christians in the North, in specific terms, Hausa Christians, Fulani Born Again?

Is the North still united, as was the case? What about her oligarchy and a few leftist socialist activists that set the Talakawa agenda? What needs to be understood about the almajiri system and institutional begging in the North? Is it really about marginalisation? Who marginalized who? What did we really do with power, one which we have held on to, but remain largely economically and educational defunct and marginalised?

Nigeria currently is on the top of the most unequal countries, the poverty in the North is in stark contrast with the reality in the South, whether it is better access to healthcare or education. The Human Development Index of the states in the North compared with the South is suicidal. In the North we tend to spend less on our citizens than the South.

The good thing is that the North has vast amount of arable land, very young, fast growing and talented population, vast amount of natural resources, etc. A prosperous and peaceful North is key to Nigeria’s prosperity and greatness. However, we need to bash ourselves, the larger North, the smaller Arewa need to stop lying to itself and her people.

I will end this admonition again in the words of one of the sons of the North, T.Y Danjuma: “We need to think more, pray more, plan more, work harder, relate better and talk less. Battles are better fought and won through wisdom and strategy than through inflammable pronouncements and political tantrums.”

This is to the North, but it does apply to Nigeria, the current hate quotient is high. For how long? Only time will tell.

On the proactive Ondo lawmaker

ONE of the attributes to look out for in a credible leader is whether the person is living by the principles and his words or how urgently he attends to the problems facing his people. The newly elected Ese Odo lawmaker in Ondo State promised to serve his people very well.

It takes a very principled man like Hon Success Torhukerhijo to live by his words by immediately visiting the victims of a recent domestic fire outbreak when it got to his attention that a 70-year-old woman, Mrs Moyo Jide and her four grandchildren were involved in a fire accident.

Though it is a tragedy, the incident has shown that the lawmaker takes his commitment seriously and is a caring politician with a high sense of moral values, especially when he deemed it his duty to provide the family the necessary relief materials to rebuild the burnt structure with a promise to give them more support.

The lawmaker should not make a detour from this path that he has started to tread so that his constituents will enjoy the dividends of democracy

Nigeria Loses $878bn To Infrastructural Deficiency – NECA

NECA

The Nigeria Employer’s Consultative Association (NECA) yesterday raised the alarm that the neglect of infrastructural development across the length and breadth of country may cost the nation a whopping $878 billion by 2040 if the trend continues.

Mr. Mauricio Alarcon, 2nd Vice President of NECA, while presenting the address of late Dr. Mohammed Yinusa, President of NECA at the 62nd Annual General Meeting (AGM), also called on the Federal Government to make Nigeria more productive through deliberate political will and constitutional reforms that are targeted at eliminating States and Local Governments’ dependence on the monthly revenue allocation in Abuja.

NECA, while commending President Mohammadu Buhari for signing the executive order 07, aimed at fostering partnership with the private sector and government on infrastructural development, noted that in as much as partnership is desirable and in the right direction, the burden of infrastructural development lies with the government.

“Successive governments in the last forty years have neglected infrastructural development and this will lead the nation to a projected deficit of $878 billion by 2040”.

NECA, according to the associations is also worried about the partial implementation of the 2018 budget allocation of N2.87 trillion to capital expenditure, representing just 31% of total budget, adding that the gradual reduction in the budgetary allocation to infrastructure from N2.87 trillion in 2018 to N2.03 trillion in the 2019 budget is also of great concern.

“According to the National Integrated Infrastructure Master Plan draft of 2013, Nigeria requires about $2.9 trillion (N87 trillion) in 30 years to close the infrastructural gap. With the contending needs for scarce funds by all sectors government will do well to sustain the enlistment of the private sector as a critical partner in this onerous task of infrastructural development.

“There is an urgent need to make our country more productive through deliberate political will and constitutional reforms that are targeted at eliminating States and Local Governments’ dependence on the monthly revenue allocation in Abuja. State Governments must think out of the box to make their State economically viable and sustainable in the long term, eliminating high cost of governance and frivolous expenditures under the guise of security votes.”

Annual Capital Flight Is $3bn – AON

LAGOS – Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has disclosed that foreign carriers engage in capital flight to the tune of $3bn annually from Nigeria.

The body also called on the Federal Government to support Air Peace, which about two weeks ago commenced one of its international operations to Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (UAE) about two weeks ago, saying that Nigeria needed to play the aero politics like other countries.

Capt. Nogie Meggison, Chairman, AON made the statement yesterday at the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos in an interview with aviation journalists.

According to Meggison, foreign carriers had continued to dominate the Nigerian sky over the years, with attendance financial loss to the economy of the country.

Meggison lamented that 85 per cent of Nigerian airlines that failed on the international routes was mainly due to aero politics, which the government had refused to participate in.

AON charged the Federal Government to put its full weight behind Air Peace and give the carrier all the support it required to succeed on the route in the face of stiff competition and aero politics, which the carrier would face in the future.

“Air Peace has taken a bold step and they should be encouraged by Nigerians. The airline’s maiden flight to Dubai means more jobs for our Nigerian youths; it means jobs for over 600 unemployed Nigerian pilots; it means hope for our various Aviation Training Academies at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria, International Aviation College, Ilorin and the International Helicopter Flying School, Enugu.

“It also means more travel choices for Nigerian travellers at affordable rates; it means more contribution to the Nigerian economy and the Gross Domestic Product (GDP); it means increased growth for the Nigerian aviation sector.

“It means the transfer of technology and technical expertise; and it also means a reduction in capital flight from the country by foreign airlines. Government therefore needs to rally round Air Peace as a proud Nigerian operator and give the airline all the support to succeed.”

The emphasised that it was the entrance of Air Peace to Dubai route, made it the fourth attempt any Nigerian airline would make foray into the international market, stressing that many of the airlines that went on international routes before the airline collapsed due mainly to aero-politics.

He insisted that aero politics was the bane of Bellview Arik Air and Med-View Airline on international operations, stressing that they were frustrated out of operations by sheer regulatory technicalities.

Meggison charged the government to stand tall with Nigerian Airlines and bring the full weight of its political machinery and influence behind any of its airlines that ply international routes.

He further charged Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to urgently provide Air Peace with a prominent space for its private lounge on the air side of the international wing of Lagos airport designed in the colours of the airline to show its status as a Nigerian flag carrier.

Non-Oil Exports: Fidelity Bank, NEPC, LBS Train 100 MSMEs In Kano

Fidelity Bank Plc, top Nigerian lender, is training over 100 SMEs at the 8th edition of the highly acclaimed Export Management Programme (EMP) with the aim of providing impactful, world-class support to Micro Small Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Kano State.

EMP programme, organised by the bank in strategic partnership with the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) and the Lagos Business School (LBS), is currently in its third year was designed specifically to enhance the competitiveness of export-oriented businesses.

The programme has since graduated over 400 entrepreneurs who have transitioned from base level export experience to becoming established exporters with extensive export market footprints.

Since the commencement of the programme in 2017, the bank had always planned to take EMP to other parts of Nigeria where there are critical mass market opportunities for exports.

Mohammed Balarabe, the Bank’s Deputy Managing Director (DMD), speaking at the opening ceremony, commended the participants for enrolling for the programme, adding that it was smart investment decision in the light of emerging opportunities in the non-oil sector of the economy.

“I am very confident that your business will benefit immensely from the insights and knowledge that the programme provides, with return on investment far exceeding the financial and economic costs of the programme to you” Balarabe said.

Commenting on the rationale behind holding this edition in Kano, Mr. Balarabe noted that the decision was borne out of the need to exploit the massive potentials of the positioning of Kano as the hub for aggregation of agro commodities in Northern Nigeria.

“Kano is the hub for agro commodity exports in Northern Nigeria and majority of these exports are done informally. We have brought this Programme closer to you to fully unlock the potentials of the Northern Exports market and help you gain the knowledge required to increase your market access” he said.

Speaking in the same vein, Mr Hassan Bala, the Regional Coordinator (Northwest) for NEPC, stated that the EMP 8 will help scale the capacity of existing and potential exporters to enable them participate fully in the non-oil export business in Nigeria.

“The faculties we have gathered have the capacity and experience to assist the participants in achieving the target set for the programme. It is an invaluable training programme for all businesses interested in Nigeria’s foreign trade”, Bala said.
