My wife sleeps, snores, while I cook, care for our kids; my mother-in-law dictates the tune in our home —Husband

Agboola

A man, Collins Agboola told Oja Oba/Mapo Court C Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, he wanted the dissolution of their 7-year-old marriage.

Collins in his suit stated that his wife was rude, disobedient and abandoned her duties. He added that she allowed her mother to control their home.

Collins further sought for the custody of their two children.

Hellen admitted to claim.

Collins stated that:“Hellen was a dutiful and loving wife early in our marriage but she gradually changed because her mother was always ill advising and instigating her against me.

“She abandones her duties at home, neglects our children and cares less about their welfare.

“She goes to bed early and wakes up late. She snores in bed when the children and I are almost ready for school and work.

“I once saw our children in rough school uniforms and woke her up to change them to neater ones. Rather than get out of bed, she turned her side and told me she would do so when she was awake.

“I had to stay back to change their uniforms before rushing to work.

“She doesn’t cook many times at home which spurs my decision to cook or eat from food vendors.

“I decided to show my displeasure at her behaviour by packing some of my belongings and moving out of the house. I was out of home for ten days but she was not bothered about my whereabouts nor display any sign of remorse.

“My lord, I was sick and admitted in the hospital but she failed to take care of me. She did not tell my family members I was sick and when my mother got to know and challenged her, she told her she felt it was not necessary to inform her since I was still alive.

“After several tests were carried out on me, it was discovered I was poisoned, “Collins told the court.

“My father-in-law, when he was alive, warned me not to allow my mother-in-law in my house and narrated to me how he ruined his life.

“My mother-in-law moved in with us immediately her husband died and turned my home upside down. She dictates the tune while she hates seeing my family members come to my house. She also advised my wife wrongly and instigated her against me.

“I reported my wife and her mother to our pastor and he requested to see both of them but they turned down his request.

“I once got home and discovered she had packed my electronics from home. I reported her at the police station and they were retrieved from her.

“She also once left home for ten days and abandoned our children without making her whereabouts known. I had no choice but to carry out her duties in the house.

“My lord, my wife has frustrated me enough, please, separate us, “the plaintiff pleaded.

Giving her evidence, Hellen stated that:”My lord, he was the one who asked my mother to stay with us so that she could help take care of our children and she spent few months with us.

“He was in the habit of borrowing money from my mother while she was with us and would fail to pay back.

“I’m a responsible woman and do take care of my family. I’m the one who buys foodstuff for the home; I cook on a regular basis while he pays our children’s school fees.

“I packed away his electronics because he denied me access to our children which according to him was my punishment for leaving home for days without his knowledge.

“I returned them after he arrested me with the police.”

Ruling after listening to both parties, the court president, Alhaji Suleiman Apampa dissolved their wedlock and awarded custody of their two children to the defendant.

The plaintiff was ordered to pay N10, 000 as their feeding allowance every month. He was also asked to be responsible for their education and health care.

A “technically” incompetent Chief Justice of Nigeria

A “technically” incompetent Chief Justice of Nigeria

Buhari, Fulanisation

A trending video clip of the senate confirmation hearing of Chief Justice of Nigeria Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad where he betrayed mortifying ignorance of the meaning of the term “technicality” aggrandises the point I made in my April 20, 2019 column titled “Atiku’s Citizenship and Buhari’s Illiterate Lawyers” about Buhari’s love affair with incompetence and mediocrity.

I noted that, “The law of attraction says like attracts like, which explains why Muhammadu Buhari is a magnet for mediocrities. Almost all his appointees are, like him, underwhelming, intellectually incurious rubes.” Justice Tanko is the latest instantiation of Buhari’s passion for attracting and elevating people who mirror his own well-known incompetence and witlessness.

First, here is a brief background for people who are not clued in on the exchange that exposed the soft underbelly of the awkward, cringe-worthy ignorance of Nigeria’s Chief Justice. Senate Minority Leader Enyinnaya Abaribe asked Tanko if he thought it made legal and moral sense to pervert the merit of cases before the Supreme Court on the basis of “mere technicality.”

Abaribe reminded Tanko that, “In the 2018 case of Akeredolu vs Abraham, the Supreme Court said, ‘technicality in the administration of justice shuts out justice.’…It is therefore better to have a case heard and determined on its merit than to leave the court with the shield of victory obtained on mere technicality.”

Nevertheless, in spite of the legal precedent the Supreme Court has set regarding the primacy of legal merit of cases over their technicalities in the dispensation of justice, Abaribe pointed out, the Supreme Court this year ruled against PDP’s Ademola Adeleke of Osun State not because his case lacked merit but on the basis of a frivolous technicality.

All this passed over Tanko’s head. He had not the haziest idea what “technicality” meant and went off on a puzzling tangent. “Permit me, distinguished senators, to ask what a technicality is,” he said. “It is something which is technical. By definition, it is something that is not usual and may sometimes defy all the norms known to a normal thing. Now, we have technicalities in our laws and this is because these laws we have inherited were from the British.”

Ha! You can’t make this stuff up! He continued: “Now, if something which is technical comes before the court, what we do in trial courts is to ask people who are experts in that field to come and testify. We rely on their testimony because they are experts in that field.

“Ask me anything about an aeroplane, I don’t know. Ask me to drive [sic] an aeroplane, I am sure if you are a passenger and they told you that the flight is going to be driven [sic] by Honourable Justice Ibrahim Tanko, I am sure you will get out of the plane because it is something that requires technicality and if I have any technicality, my technicality will only be limited to law.”

If I didn’t watch the video myself, I would have dismissed the response attributed to Tanko as an ill-willed spoof intentionally designed to diminish his estimation.

Although I know that spectacular ignorance and vulgar loyalty are the most crucial criteria to be considered worthy of consideration for appointment in Buhari’s regime, I am still distressed both by the disconcerting know-nothingness Tanko evinced in his response to Abaribe and by the fact that he is head of Nigeria’s judiciary.

Tanko isn’t just any judge; he is the Chief Justice of Nigeria. He didn’t just study law; he has a Ph.D. in law from one of Nigeria’s finest universities— at a time when Nigeria’s education supposedly still had integrity. And facility for and proficiency in language (in Nigeria’s case the English language) and logical disputation are as central to the job of lawyers and judges as farming instruments are to the job of being a farmer.

If Tanko doesn’t know what a “technicality” is, what does he really know? Every averagely educated person knows that in conversational English, a “technicality” is an unimportant detail, a triviality. In law, it means a procedural trifle. This legal sense of the term is now so commonplace that it has diffused to everyday discourse. Why would a judge of nearly 40 years’ standing, a PhD in law, and the head of the nation’s judicial branch of government not know what a technicality is?

But what is even more disquieting is that Tanko inadvertently revealed ignorance of the precedent established by the Supreme Court in which he has served for more than 12 years. Had he read the Supreme Court judgement Abaribe referenced, he would have at least encountered the word “technicality.” He apparently wasn’t, probably still isn’t, aware that the Supreme Court had even laid a precedent that says the Court should not use procedural inanities to subvert the legal merit of cases.

It must be precisely this ignorance that led the Supreme Court to dismiss Ademola Adeleke’s bid to retrieve his stolen mandate from the current governor of Osun State. The Supreme Court didn’t even evaluate Adeleke’s weighty, water-tight case against Oyetola; it ruled against Adeleke just because one of the panelists on the election tribunal that had restored Adeleke’s stolen mandate was absent on one day during the trial.

That was a bewildering reversal of the Supreme Court’s own precedent. All over the world, courts rely on precedents to adjudicate current cases. Precedents may be modified, but they are rarely overturned without a compelling reason, certainly not within a few years after they were established. That is what legal scholars call stare decisis, that is, the doctrine that courts should follow precedent. A Chief Justice that is ignorant about something as basic as “technicality” is unlikely to know what “precedent” means, much less something as rarefied as the doctrine of stare decisis.

After the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Oyetola, I wrote on social media that the ruling was judgment, not justice. In spite of suppositions to the contrary, “judgment” and “justice” are not synonymous. Some judgements pervert justice. The Adeleke vs Oyetola case is a classic example of that. Sadly, the distinction between judgement and justice will become starker, bolder, and more invidious now that we have an unbelievably ignorant and incompetent Chief Justice who heads a Supreme Court that’s now an unabashedly “remote controllable” extension of Aso Rock.

Even feeble pretences to democracy and decency are now dead in Buhari’s Nigeria. Atiku Abubakar’s petition against Buhari’s unexampled electoral fraud has no chance of success in a Supreme Court that overturns its less than one-year-old precedent, that is headed by a nescient and inept chief justice who doesn’t know the meaning of basic terms that are crucial to the administration of justice, and who owes debt to an audacious electoral mandate snatcher for his position.

Perhaps more regrettable for me as a northerner is that Tanko has helped to feed the stereotype of the northern know-nothing who owes his rise in society to incestuous northern nepotistic patronage networks. Of course, it’s unfair to hold up Tanko’s obvious cognitive inferiority as representative of all northerners. There are way smarter, more educated northern lawyers than Tanko who nonetheless vegetate on the fringes.

Our problem in the north has always been that we don’t put forward our best eleven, to use the common soccer analogy. We are often led by our worst. And we are all judged by the crass ignorance and indiscretions of our worst who nevertheless become our public face. Buhari is taking the elevation of wretched ignoramuses to important positions to the next level. How utterly sad.

Ijeoma (by SMS)

Apart from wearing a padded brassier, the only other way to have bigger breasts is to go for silicone breast implants through plastic surgery. Unfortunately, apart from the expense, this approach is fraught with many unpleasant side effects. At 22 years of age and with your ‘beauty and good height’ I believe that you are okay as you are. In addition, by the time you start having babies, your bust line will naturally increase in size.

Friendship: An essential ingredient to success in marriage

Tribune Online
Friendship: An essential ingredient to success in marriage

breast sucking, s3x, sex, extra marital sexual marriage

A  marriage relationship that will last is one in which the partners are friends. Couples being friends is what makes for marital bonding. Friendship should even be achieved before marriage takes place. This is what makes couples to be able to live together forever. Every couple should therefore ensure that they maintain their friendship relationship in the marriage setting.

When a couple has achieved bonding in marriage, they don’t live separate life anymore. Rather, they live as one, doing things in common or in togetherness. It is when a couple has been able to achieve this that bonding can be said to have taken place or achieved in a marriage. This is the cote of friendship in marriage.

Achieving bonding, which is a state of dependency of a couple, is not easily done, though highly and absolutely necessary. It is the ingredient of success in marriage which each couple must strive to achieve. As stated last week, sex is the nature induced way of achieving this bonding.

When a couple has bonded, there is a way they will live their lives in togetherness. This way of living is made easier when couples have been able to cultivate friendship in the marriage. To achieve this friendship bonding, the following will be necessary.

Couples should live together

A married couple who wants to achieve success in the marriage should have a single accommodation life. That is, they must live together in the same place. Keeping separate living accommodation is highly inimical to the success of a marriage. That is why the Bible requires that “a man will leave his father and mother, and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” Becoming one flesh is what dependency or bonding is all about.

Living together in the same place means same location with reference to town, house, and room. This is the way those who have succeeded, and are succeeding in marriage relationship live. Many marriages crashing today, or that had crash, or that have suffered setbacks with the evidence of scars of marital unfaithfulness, children out of wedlock, sexually transmitted diseases, among others, arrived there due to separate living accommodation in most cases. So, when due to job or business situations, a couple lives apart, they are endangering their marriage. A couple that lives together, stays together, and vice versa.

Should couples consume pornographic content?

Tribune Online
Should couples consume pornographic content?

cheat, family, love, sex , phone woman family, birth control, election marriage

PORNOGRAPHIC contents are explicit or x-rated contents that depict adults engaging in sexual act. They are rated 18 but are highly abused by the young and old. They are consumed in schools, offices and homes. Some use them to arouse their sexual urge, others for purgatory function.

Married couples are privy to have sex which is one of their pledges when signing the dotted lines but should they consume pornographic content separately or together?

On WhatsApp Conversation, these are what those who joined the conversation and our expert said on the issue:

Lanre Oseni

It is immoral and inadmissible for couples to consume pornographic content.

Momoh Charles

Pornographic materials are not outrightly bad as far as married couples are concerned.  It helps to bond the intimacy of parties concerned to be. However, they should not be addicted to it.

Kike Adekola

It is not advisable for couples. However, it depends on the couple. If they are addicted to such content before marriage, they can go ahead in order to allow peaceful coexistence.

Adekunle Isa

I don’t see anything bad in it as a couple. It helps to boost libido in order to drive sex satisfaction from one’s spouse.

Joshua Adeniyi

Porn shouldn’t be consumed by couples. First, it’s a sin against God. Also, it is addictive and can lead to lack of satisfaction from either of the couple who consume such content due higher expectation from their spouses.

Amina Momoh

It is of no importance if there is no problem with their sexual life. It might result to problems that they might find difficult to handle.

Oluwayase Mercy

They are not good in anyway. And I will not support that in my family. Although, some partners may like it and want to explore what they see but for me it is a “No”.

Thompson Falowo

Some couples consume pornographic content to increase their libido. But the end result of this most times is addiction which in turn leads to masturbation. Moreover, masturbation is a sin according to the Bible. So I will say a capital NO to it.

Taiwo Ahmed

I think it’s a great idea and one of the best things to get involved in as couples as it would help improve their sex life. Also knowing what your partner wants and how to satisfy him/her with it is the most important goals to a successful marriage. Consuming such with your partner  without keeping secrets, getting advice outside about your sex life or even practicing it outside with someone else is best than avoid it and engage in  infidelity which  can sooner or later destroy the home.

Felix Sihitshuwam

I’m close to the conclusion that watching pornographic movies is equivalent to inhaling evil spirits. One reason married couples may seek to consume pornographic content is to spice up sex life. However, this can be achieved through reading books on sex. On whether this still resorts or boils down or is equivalent to watching pornographic movies, I can’t really say.

Dorcas Adeyanju

I think pornographic content should be consumed by couples as this will help to spur their mood, enable them explore different sexual activities and enjoy sex. We have so many marriages where they’re not happy because of bad sex experience; men cheat on their wives because they claimed their wives are not active in bed and other excuses. Imagine someone who got married a virgin where do you want them to learn the process? Sure, it is through pornographic content. Pornographic contents are not to arouse alone but are instruction materials. Some partners don’t know how to satisfy their spouse, coupled with their conservative idea about sex which is boring. Trust me, most spouses are not enjoying their sex life. This had led to many broken homes. We have thousands of women out there with over 12 years in marriage with children, that don’t enjoy sex because they don’t know how to go about it. So, it’s beyond the fact that pornography is bad but looks at its learning aspect for couples.

Expert Speaks

Rey Ovie, a pastor is our expert on this issue. Marriage is not for procreation and sexual pledges only, but to fulfill God’s divine purpose. Whatever has a beginning has an end. And at certain ages in life, the craving for sexual intercourse drops. There’s nothing that can justify the intake of cocaine, same applies to pornography.  Whether you’re married or single, pornography should not be consumed. The negative effects outweigh the positive. The nature of porn goes beyond the act and what you learn from it but consumers of pornography get addicted to it like illicit drugs. Not to forget that, most acts in pornography contents are indulged in using drugs, and for couples consuming such, the possibility of sexual satisfaction from one’s partner is 100% impossible. This is antithetical to the motive of consumption because the inner cravings and desire seen in such movie may not be feasible in reality. And if your partner decides to call it quits the feeling of being betrayed and not satisfied sprung, this might result to faithful spouse indulging in masturbation. True, it exposes couples to new possibilities in the art of love making but the different act engaged in are not justified for morally inclined couples. In a nutshell porn consumption isn’t made for married Christians. The rate of rape in Nigeria is on the increase and this is as a result of insatiable sexual yearnings of young, old married and single. One of the factors behind this is consumption of pornographic contents.

I dropped out of school because of my passion for music —Singer Nappy

Tribune Online
I dropped out of school because of my passion for music —Singer Nappy

music

How did you get your professional name, Nappy?

It’s from nap. I believe in napping and not sleeping and being lazy. I believe if you want to be great, you have to constantly be on your grind. So, I am always nappy, not sleepy.

Then shouldn’t nappy suggest a state of sleepiness?

What I am saying is that I take naps, instead of sleep. I believe that if you have something you want to chase, you take naps not sleep.

How will this philosophy impact on your music?

If I don’t sleep, I am awake doing music. And I intend to make great music, great vibe, nice sound, obviously a message to the listeners.

What is the inspiration behind your latest offering, “She Didn’t Know”?

“She Didn’t Know” is a satire on women who underrate men based on financial and social status. It’s a song everyone should listen to and just smile about. Most young people will also be able to relate to, because every one of us has had one or more of those encounters before. The song is just a normal guy’s experience with girls.

Have you taken stock of the Nigerian music industry?

Yes, before I joined the music industry I took time to study the music environment of Nigeria, who my audience should be and when it is best to release my music. Yes, I have been doing my home work.

Do you think Nigeria is ready for your kind of music?

Yes. Nigerian music has gotten global attention. We have been ruling the world in music. And I am so excited about the future of Nigerian music with the kind of new kids that are on the block right now; stars like Odunsi, Rema, DNA and Crayon among others. For me, this is an interesting time to join the league. I just love good music. And I know as long as I continue to make good music, I will stand the test of time

You are signed to Naptown record label. Are you the founder?

It is a family record label handled by my brother.

What musical ingredients are you bringing into the industry?

I understand Nigerian music. I say again I know that as long as you give Nigerians good music constantly, you will stand the test of time. It is about giving people good product.

Tell us about the type of music you do?

I like vibey songs and I always want to pass a message and I believe that’s what music is really all about. I believe any music without a relatable story to it wouldn’t last. So, I obviously want to make good music which is relatable to.

Who are your audience?

Those people that love good music with message in it. If you listen to my songs you will know that it is unique, you can’t really compare it to any kind. Though, I have been influenced by other singers, you cannot necessarily compare my music with anyone.

Who do you listen to?

I listened to good music. I like Wizkid, I like Davido, I like Burna Boy. These have been consistent over the years. I also like Bob Marley, 2Pac and Drake. But my musical flexibility makes my genre extremely unique and creates a sound that will completely change the music industry.

How do you describe the present music industry in Nigeria?

It is simply vast. With the kind of music that is being released today, the kind of sound that is out there, I think there is space for everyone. If you want to listen to hip hop, you know where to go, if you want commercial sound you know where to go, if you want alternative music you also know where to go, if you want the vibe sounds and other kinds of music, you will find ample examples.

It didn’t use to be so ten years ago, but we can now say that there is space for everyone right now. The audience has expanded and all kinds of music fit into the music industry in their own way. There are those who want to listen to artiste with message, there is space for them too. So, in my opinion, the Nigerian music scene is open to all genres now.

Let’s talk about your growing up. How did music start for you?

I started making music when I was eleven. I didn’t pay much attention to it. After High School and two years into College I went to the studio for the first time. I heard the sound of my voice, I liked how I sounded and since then, I started paying more attention to it than school.

You dropped out because of music?

I immediately discovered that it was music I wanted to do. I was very confident that my music was good and that people were going to like it.

You left school?

Yes. It was a good thing for me.

Would you say you were a stubborn child?

Not necessarily a stubborn child. I am someone that understands himself, I know it is my life and I need to take action.

Did you find it hard to convince your parents to accept this aspect of your life?

Not necessarily, the way I was brought up made my life a lot easier. I was taught to be myself.

Who are you closer to between your parents?

I am closer to my dad. He supported me like every father will support a son. We love music in my family. When he started hearing me my father was like I should focus on it if that was what I wanted to do.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I see myself giving people good music and being a good influence to the youth, guiding them to be better people. I want to be someone people are proud of, it is all about being great and leaving a lasting legacy.

What is your greatest challenge?

I haven’t had a challenge. I am a very friendly person I don’t think I will have a challenge.

Rivaldo Backs Neymar To Secure Summer Transfer

Brazil legend Rivaldo has backed compatriot Neymar to secure the Paris Saint-Germain exit he’s seeking after reportedly growing disgruntled at the club.

Neymar, 27, joined PSG from Barcelona in a world-record €222 million transfer two years ago. The cost of the deal means PSG have yet to see their valuation of the player met, but Rivaldo told Betfair (h/t Goal’s Chris Burton) “it should be straightforward” for the French giants to attract a suitable offer:

“It’s general knowledge that Neymar wants to leave PSG for another big European club, but that’s not a guarantee, and if he ends up staying, he would need to focus on his football rather than anything else.

“He is not happy with PSG, and I believe he could even regret his decision of joining—with all due respect—but the situation is complicated, as they spent a lot of money on him.

“PSG don’t want to get hit with a big loss after investing more than €200 million, but I believe they can recover their investment, or at least exchange him for money and other good players in the business. So, hopefully, it should be straightforward.”

Even manager Thomas Tuchel told RMC (h/t Goal) he was aware of Neymar’s motivation to leave the club prior to this summer’s Copa America:

There have been frequent reports regarding Neymar’s desire to get out of Paris in recent months. The forward missed half of the 2018-19 campaign because of a foot injury and hasn’t raked in the plaudits he was likely expecting with a move to France.

Rivaldo concluded: “With his recent comments and behaviour, it’s possible that fans won’t be too happy with him if he remains. He must face the music and simply play his best football. If he manages to achieve something special with them in Europe, perhaps the fans won’t criticise him as much.”

Dani Alves, 36, was a staunch defender of Neymar during their time together at the Parc des Princes. It was he who wrestled the ball from team-mate Edinson Cavani during his penalty disagreement with Neymar in November 2017, but Alves is no longer part of the dressing room.

Neymar hurt his public image when he reacted angrily to a fan goading him at the Coupe de France final, when PSG suffered a penalty shootout defeat to Rennes following a 2-2 draw:

Even close friend Alves—who has now left PSG—couldn’t defend his ally at the time and said Neymar shouldn’t have reacted to the supporter as he did, a possible sign of his frustration in France.

It shouldn’t be surprising Rivaldo appears to want Neymar out of the Parc des Princes. The Selecao legend, 47, made 236 appearances for Barca during his career and would presumably support the notion of Neymar returning to the Camp Nou, where he achieved his greatest successes.

The supposed idea was that he would step out of Lionel Messi’s shadow by moving to Paris, but Neymar hasn’t found the glory he hoped for in Ligue 1, while PSG have still struggled in the UEFA Champions League.

PSG director Leonardo said earlier in July that Neymar can leave the club if they receive an offer that “suits everyone.” Sky in Germany (h/t Sky Sports News) reported Barcelona’s latest offer was worth £90 million and two players from a six-man list.

The Blaugrana look like the only serious suitors hoping to cut a deal for Neymar this summer, with Rivaldo hopeful of seeing the star content and back to his best as soon as possible.

Sheffield United To Break Transfer Record

Sheffield United are set to break their transfer record for a third time this summer, with the signing of Bournemouth striker Lys Mousset.

According to a number of high-profile sources, such as Sky Sports News , the Frenchman is set to move to Bramall Lane after a £10m deal was agreed.

The striker will become the Blades’ fourth signing of the summer, joining Callum Robinson, Phil Jagielka and Luke Freeman in South Yorkshire.

It throws doubt over the Blades’ prolonged interest in Oli McBurnie, with Swansea having already turned down a £15m bid.

China Hits Back At ‘Hypocritical’ US Over Religious Freedom

Secretary of State Pompeo said Thursday that Washington will create a new international body to campaign for religious freedom, speaking after a conference where he called China’s mass incarceration of mostly Muslim Uighurs “the stain of the century”.

At a press briefing in Beijing on Friday, foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang rebuffed the criticism.

“The so-called conference on promoting religious freedom has slandered China’s religious policies and the situation of religious belief in China and interfered with China’s internal affairs,” he said.

“The Chinese side is strongly dissatisfied with this and resolutely opposes it.”

China has rounded up an estimated one million Uighurs and other mostly Muslim Turkic-speaking minorities into re-education camps in tightly controlled Xinjiang region, in the country’s northwest.

Beijing has defended its policy, describing the sites as vocational training centres and saying it is trying to root out extremism.

Geng said that the comments from Pompeo and Vice President Pence — who also criticised China’s record on human rights at the meeting — had “completely confused right and wrong and reversed black and white”.

“They even mixed and colluded with cultists, which again exposed their hideous face and hypocritical features,” added Geng.

“We demand that the US abide by objective facts, abandon prejudice, correctly look at China’s religious policies and the state of freedom of religious belief, and stop using religious issues to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs.”

Pompeo said that details of the group, dubbed the International Religious Freedom Alliance, were still being worked out but that it would “bring like-minded countries together” to make the issue a priority.

The Trump administration has generally played down human rights other than with adversaries. But it has put a high priority on religious freedom, an important issue for Trump’s evangelical Christian base.

Pence also pledged to support religious freedom in North Korea this week, which advocacy groups say is perhaps the world’s most repressive state, where even possession of the Bible is banned.

Merkel Says Trump Tweets Go Against What Makes America Great

Donald Trump

German Chancellor Angela Merkel condemned President Donald Trump’s xenophobic tweets against four minority Democratic congresswomen, saying the US leader’s attacks “go against what makes America great.

“I firmly distance myself from (the attacks) and I feel solidarity towards” the women, she told journalists.

“In my view, the strength of America lies in that people from different (origins) contributed to what makes the country great.”

Trump on Sunday urged a group of four progressive Democratic congresswomen of colour — all American citizens and three of them US-born — to “go back” to their countries of origin.

Despite a domestic uproar over the comments which were deemed “racist” by the House of Representatives, Trump repeatedly renewed his attack.

“If you’re not happy here, you can leave … This is about love for America, certain people hate our country,” he tweeted on Tuesday, while repeating the same message to a rally on Wednesday.

International condemnation has rained down over the comments, with British Prime Minister Theresa May calling them “completely unacceptable” and New Zealand’s leader Jacinda Ardern saying she “completely and utterly” disagrees with him.

While usually refraining from commenting on other countries’ domestic politics, Merkel on Friday also had markedly sharp words about Trump’s latest attacks.

Questions over racism are particularly sensitive in Germany given its Nazi past, and the government routinely speaks out forcefully in favour of tolerance and diversity.

While Merkel had shared a visibly warm relationship with former US president Barack Obama, her contact with Trump has been formal and firm.

Setting the tone from the start, Merkel in her first phone call with Trump after he took office offered cooperation, but also reminded him of democratic values.

That phone call led some commentators to suggest she had taken on the mantle of the “leader of the free world”, a title usually reserved for US presidents.

PepsiCo To Buy South Africa’s Pioneer Food For $1.7 bln

PepsiCo has struck a deal to buy South Africa’s Pioneer Food Group for $1.7 billion, the companies said on Friday, lifting Pioneer’s shares and boosting a sector that has been hit by drought and tough trading conditions.

The U.S. drinks and snack group said on Friday that Pioneer’s product portfolio was complementary to its own and would help PepsiCo to expand in sub-Saharan Africa by adding manufacturing and distribution capabilities.

“Pioneer Foods forms an important part of our strategy to not only expand in South Africa, but further into sub-Saharan Africa as well,” PepsiCo Chairman and CEO Ramon Laguarta said in a statement.

PepsiCo has offered 110 rand ($7.94) per Pioneer ordinary share in what would be its second largest deal since 2010, the companies said, with the news lifting the South African company’s shares by 29.32% to more than 100 rand.

Shares in agribusiness investment company Zeder Investments , which holds Pioneer as part of its portfolio, also rose more than 22%.

“It’s a vote of confidence in South Africa at a time when we really need it,” Pioneer CEO Tertius Carstens told Reuters.

Food producers have struggled amid a slump in retail sales as consumers cut back and dry weather hit maize and other produce.

Pioneer, which uses maize in many of its products, reported a decline in half-year earnings in May, weighed down by shortages in the staple food.

“It’s almost a signal to other overseas companies that we are open for business. If PepsiCo is willing to put money down it may lift sentiment of other foreign investors that might come looking at South Africa for bargains,” said Greg Davies, equities trader at Cratos Capital.

Pioneer, whose brands include Weet-Bix cereal, Liqui Fruit juice and Sasko bread, is the latest consumer goods firm to be the target of a buyout after South Africa’s Clover Industries , which processes products including yoghurt, beverages, and olive oil, began takeover talks with a consortium of companies called Milco SA last year.

Pioneer was in talks over a potential deal with “a multinational organisation” in 2017, but that fell apart after South Africa’s credit rating was cut to junk status.

Pioneer and PepsiCo declined to comment whether those talks referred to them.

Pioneer exports to more than 80 countries. Its deal with PepsiCo is conditional on regulatory approvals.

DSS Raises Alarm Over Cloning Of Government Official Websites

The Department of State Services (DSS) says its attention has been drawn to activities of some unscrupulous elements cloning official websites of some government agencies and using same to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians.

Peter Afunanya, the Public Relations Officer of DSS, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

He said there had been instances where the official identities/paraphernalia of certain Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) were deceptively deployed by these criminals to shortchange vulnerable persons.

“Notably, the Nigeria Social Investment Trust Fund (NSITF) and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have so far suffered the tricks of these fraudsters who use decoys to manipulate their victims.

“This, in the case of NSITF, has resulted in loss of varying sums of money by those promised huge returns on Federal Government’s investments and other poverty alleviation initiatives which ended up as scam.

“Some persons have also engaged in the illegal sale of NYSC kits and accouterments to prospective corps members.

“They also advertise the issuance of medical clearance certificates as well as redeployment of corps members to preferred states for primary assignment on medical, security, marital grounds or other reasons,” he said.

He said the DSS was already working with the agencies to identify and arrest suspects and enjoined the public and prospective corps members to be wary and conscious of the fraudulent developments.

Afunanya, therefore, warned perpetrators to desist from the act or be ready to face the full consequences of their actions as the service would continue to track the criminals.

He urged the public to exercise restraint in dealing with unknown or unconfirmed persons or groups and called for verification of information from relevant authorities and agencies.

Rising Insecurity: War Drums Sounding Everywhere, Ooni Tells Buhari

Innocent Oweh, Gbenga Abegunrin

Abuja / Ibadan – Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, stormed the Presidential Villa on Thursday, where he intimated President Muhammadu Buhari that issue of insecurity bedeviling the country was vibrating war drums.

The revered monarch, however, said people of the South-West extraction were not ready for war as the experience will not be palatable for anyone.

His visit to the presidency was connected to the killing of the daughter of the Afenifere leader, Pa Rueben Fasoranti, by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Ondo State recently, which prompted diverse reactions from Nigerians, including ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, among others.

Although the meeting held behind closed doors, the Ooni bared his mind to State House correspondents shortly after he met the president.

The royal father disclosed that his visit was on the instance of all traditional rulers in the South West, noting that they were equally equipped with ideas on how to improve the security situation in the country.

He said, “How to improve security. I came to speak on behalf of other traditional rulers. The issue at hand in the South West is real. The issue of insecurity, we that live in the remote and rural areas of the South Western part of the country, most of the bushes are occupied by strange people and we decided to work with the government to fish them out.

“Everybody is beating the drum of war, we don’t want war, who can stand war, we want something better for our youths.

“We should better use them for something good other than shouting war and anarchy. We don’t want that.

“We told the president that and he is on the same page with us. Politicians should be careful not to take things out of proportion.

“We should make sure things are right. Mr. President has actually given good directives to security chiefs especially the IGP. They will visit each and every traditional ruler’s palaces that are very sensitive in South West with immediate effect, he is going to give that directives.

“We need to work very closely with the youths and every other security agencies in the country, we will put them to good use now, it is very important to us to put them to use and work with the locals, it is very important so that we can separate the corn from the chaff”.

The Ooni also took a swipe on political leaders, accusing them of over hyping security situation in the country.

According to him, the Yoruba nation abhors any form of attrition or anarchy.

“We shouldn’t keep over hyping it by saying what is next is war, no. We know what Mr. President has been saying about South-Western part of the country for a long time, the peace and peaceful co-existence in the South-West, we still want to keep that, we don’t want any war to happen, we don’t want any attrition, we don’t want any anarchy. So that is the reason why I came to discuss with him,” he told State House correspondents.

He revealed that President Buhari promised to give a true version of the Ruga policy at the appropriate time, noting that according to the president, the public misconstrued the true intentions of the proposed Ruga settlements.

“One other thing the president assured me of, before I left, which I will go and give back to much more experienced traditional rulers in the South-West and our leaders across board is that he has assured that he will say his own side of the story about Ruga.

“He wants to let the world and Nigerians in particular know the true side of the story because it’s being read out of context. So we should give him that opportunity to speak on his behalf as the number one citizen of the country.

“What is important for me is the youthful exuberance nature of our youths in Nigeria for them not to take laws into their hands, go into all those places and start to kill and maim, we don’t want that, the drums of war is resonating too much and we are very worried,” he stated.

When asked by reporters to explain what he meant recently that the South-Westerners should defend themselves, he said, “I mentioned to you that it is real, that we have wrong people in our midst, so when we have wrong people in our midst how are we not going to defend ourselves, that is why I came here, that in terms of defending ourselves, we need more Federal Government apparatus to defend ourselves because we don’t want to be defenceless.

“It is very important. It is about the mission of defending ourselves that I am here, we need reinforcement from Federal Government and I just mentioned to you that the president has said he will give directives to the IGP to go and see every nooks and crannies of our traditional institutions in South-West and that would probably extend across the entire country because he mentioned to me that he worked in North-East and North-Central discussing and working with the traditional institutions.

“So for us to defend ourselves is for me to come here to meet Mr. President for us to have reinforcement.

“We understand our territory more than anybody. We understand our territory very well. What is important is that everybody in the South-West right now, we are all on the same page. We don’t want war and we want to work with government to defend our land”.

Also asked to comment on alleged stigmatisation of the Fulanis across the whole country, he said, “Well it is not about stigmatisation, it is about separating the corn from the chaff. A lot of them are mixed up with the good ones.

“We are not saying all Fulanis are bad, it’s not only about the Fulanis, it’s not only about them, it’s about the bad miscreants that are even hiding under the name of Fulanis. We want to try as much as possible to work with the government right now. They have all the security apparatus, they are meant to defend us, that is what we are looking out for now. We have to stand up and meet with Mr. President and he has given us a listening ear and you will see a lot of result going forward”.

OPC Gives Police 21 Days To Fish Out Killers Of Fasoranti’s Daughter

Meanwhile, the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) New Era has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the Nigerian police and other security agencies in the country to fish out the killers of Funke Olakunrin, daughter of Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti.

The OPC, in a statement by its National Public Relations Officer, Comrade Adeshina Akinpelu, stated that if after the 21-day ultimatum, the police was unable to fish out the killers of Funke Olakunrin, the Yoruba self-determination group would embark on an operation to drive out all criminal herdsmen and their Yoruba accomplices away from the South-West.

Part of the statement reads: “Time has come for us to act now. We will no longer fold our hands and allow criminal Fulani herdsmen to continue to kill us like cows.

“We can’t continue to use the blood of our people to keep Nigeria’s unity.

“We are giving the police and other security agencies 21-day ultimatum to fish out the killers of Funke Olakunrin.

“Failure to fish out the killers, we will drive out all criminal Fulani herdsmen, Yoruba accomplices, and other tribes perpetrating crimes in Yoruba land.”

The OPC also condemned the recent call by Miyetti Allah for the arrest of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, describing such statement as reckless.

“We are not in any way surprised by Miyetti Allah’s call for the arrest of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. Why would they not call for the arrest of Chief Obasanjo when they have a great supporter in the person of President Muhammadu Buhar?” The group said.

The group also called on governors, elected political office holders, and Yoruba leaders to come together and tackle the issue of insecurity in Yoruba land, saying the OPC and over one hundred other pressure groups in Yoruba land were prepared to tackle the issue in the South-West.

APC Suspends North West National Vice Chairman

Abuja – The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) said it has upheld the suspension of the party’s National Vice Chairman (North West), Malam Inuwa Abdulkadir, over anti-party activities by the party organs in Sokoto State.

The ruling party said this in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu in Abuja on Thursday.

“The NWC of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has upheld the disciplinary actions of Magajin Gari ‘A’ Ward, Sokoto North Local Government Area, and the party’s Sokoto State Executive Committee on the party’s National Vice Chairman (North West), Malam Inuwa Abdulkadir, over anti-party activities.

“The party organs in Sokoto State have earlier expelled Abdulkadir and passed on their recommendation to the NWC for ratification.

“The decision to uphold the action of the Sokoto APC organs was taken at a meeting of the NWC held at the party’s national secretariat on Thursday,” the party spokesman said in the statement.

He added that Abdulkadir failed to utilise the opportunity to defend himself before the disciplinary committee set up by the NWC to look into the various petitions received against certain members of the party.

“Following the suspension of Abdulkadir, the NWC will subsequently forward the decision of the Sokoto State organs to the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) for further actions,” he said.
