British Vogue: Magzine cover features models a diverse line-up of models

British Vogue's diverse magazine cover

The historic magazine cover features models including plus-size model, Paloma Elsesser and hijabi model, Halima Aden.

Edward Enninful continues his winning streak at British Vogue and pushing his agenda of promoting diversity in the fashion industry with his latest magazine cover which features a diverse line-up of models and has been praised as a giant leap forward for the publication.

When Edward Enninful took over from Alexandra Shulman as Editor for British Vogue, it was clear that he would give the stale publication a much needed shake-up. In just a few short months, Edward has produced conversation-worthy covers but none as spectacular as the May issue.

From its staff to its covers most of what stood stale and pale under former editor Alexandra Shulman's reign would be reversed. Enninful's first cover, a celebration of Britain, was a hit, featuring Ghanaian-British model Adwoa Aboah and a provocative hashtag, #NewVogue.

With his legendary May issue, Edward said he was, 'bringing together nine future modelling superstars for a cover story that I hope defines everything we stand for as a magazine in 2018.' The models include plus-size model and Fenty Beauty ambassador Paloma Elsesser and hibaji model and runway model Halima Aden.

In a feature on the British Vogue website, Editor Edward Enninful wrote:

I must say, assembling a star cast of fashion’s most-talked-about new faces proved a truly exciting task. Even five years ago – and certainly 10 or 20 years ago – if you were shooting a group cover like this, the girls would not have looked like these young women do.

But one of the great positives of the past few months is the fashion industry finally embracing a concept that has defined my entire working life: diversity. When I say diversity, I want to be clear that it is never just about black and white for me. It’s about diversity across the board – whether that’s race, size, socio-economic background, religion, sexuality. That’s what I want to celebrate with this cover.

Take Halima Aden and Adut Akech, born in the same refugee camp in Kenya and now standing at the top of their profession. How incredible is that? Along with Radhika Nair, Yoon Young Bae, Faretta, Fran Summers, Vittoria Ceretti, Paloma Elsesser and Selena Forrest, their CVs are bursting with big campaigns, catwalk appearances and millions of online followers. To me they represent a new global idea that anything is possible.

Naomi Campbell: This is why super model deleted her first Buhari tweet

This is why Naomi Campbell deleted her first Buhari tweet

This is the real story of how Naomi Campbell tweeted, deleted and tweeted again after taking a tour with President Buhari.

British born super model, actor and singer, Naomi Campbell, got into trouble in Nigeria’s Twitter universe on Friday, March 30, 2018, when she put out a tweet about being invited to a project inspection tour by President Muhammadu Buhari.

What would have been deemed an innocuous tweet anywhere else, immediately turned political in Nigeria.

Eko Atlantic

Before Buhari left Lagos for Abuja on Friday, a tour of the Eko Atlantic City project, was last on his itinerary.

Eko Atlantic is envisioned as a coastal city sprawled  on a land area of approximately 10 square kilometres in highbrow Victoria Island, Lagos. It was reclaimed from the Atlantic ocean.

Moments after the president’s tour of the Eko Atlantic, the presidency’s Twitter handle @NGRPresident, happily informed the world that Campbell had joined Buhari on the project inspection tour.

“President @MBuhari today in Lagos toured Eko Atlantic City. He’s pictured here with Governor @AkinwunmiAmbode, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and @NaomiCampbell. #PMBinLagos”, the tweet from @NGRPresident read.

Minutes later, Campbell corroborated the presidency’s tweet with hers that read:

“Was a pleasure to be invited by His Excellency The President of Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, to the private launch of Eko Atlantic @NGRPresident @MBuhari”.

Messy

Soon after both tweets were issued, the blowback from Twittersphere became intense. Before long, 'Naomi Campbell' became the top trend on Twitter Nigeria.

Campbell’s past was thrown into the mix by angry Twitter users on the other side of the nation's political divide. She was called names for alleged blood diamond dealings with former Liberian President Charles Taylor; and her alleged affairs with high profile society figures and leaders were cited by Twitter users who couldn't wait to soil President Buhari's famed "squeaky clean" reputation.

Buhari shouldn’t be shaking hands with her or inviting her over on a tour of government projects, these Twitter users averred.

As the criticisms and debate on Twitter raged, the presidency put out a disclaimer through Personal Assistant to the President on New Media, Bashir Ahmad.

“For the sake of clarity, President @MBuhari didn’t invite Ms. Naomi Campbell to any event during his 2-day visit to Lagos State. They only met at the Eko Atlantic City while Mr. President was touring the project, and she requested to take photos with him”, Ahmad tweeted.

And as though on cue, Ms Campbell deleted her earlier tweet in which she stated she had been invited on the tour by Buhari.

Her tweet was replaced with one that read: “Was a pleasure to meet His Excellency The President of The Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari to the launch of Eko Atlantic. HERE FOR ARISE FASHION WEEK”.

Working the phones

Why did Campbell delete her first tweet which read that she had been invited on the tour and replaced it with one which read that she was in the country for an event organized by ThisDay Newspapers; and had just happened on the president’s entourage?

A presidency source who was working the phones as the debate raged on Twitter, explained all that transpired to Pulse.

Naomi Campbell was in Nigeria as guest of Nduka Obaigbena, ThisDay publisher. Obaigbena is close friends with Femi Adesina who is Special Adviser to President Buhari on Media and Publicity.

Obaigbena's ThisDay annually puts together the 'Arise Fashion week' where hot models in scantily clad attires, strut the runways and red carpets.

Obaigbena had asked Adesina if he would be able to pull off a photo-op for his guest with the president.

No problem, Adesina told Obaigbena. Just bring her over.

Adesina thereafter fixed it all.

Blow-back

After Campbell put out her first tweet which explicitly stated that she had been invited by the president on the tour, presidential aides rang Adesina to relay the Twitter blow-back to Obaigbena.

The ThisDay publisher was told to instruct his guest, Campbell, to delete her first tweet without delay, because it was rubbing the president the wrong way and had been completely taken out of context.

Campbell then deleted her tweet as instructed.

Soon after, presidential aide Ahmad sent out his disclaimer tweet and Campbell followed up with another.

Obaigbena wasn't immediately available for comments and Adesina told Pulse over the phone that he was too busy to comment on the subject.

Back in Abuja

President Buhari is back in Abuja after a two-day working trip to Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital.

It was his first official trip to Lagos since he was elected president in 2015 with help from the godfather of Lagos and Southwest politics, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Zamfara Killings: Shoot To Kill, Governor Orders Security Agencies

Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State on Friday directed security agents to shoot and kill anyone caught carrying firearms in the state.

Mr Yari gave the order in Anka when he visited the emir to condole with the emirate over the killing of over 30 persons by gunmen in Bawan Daji village of Anka Local Government Area of the state.

The victims were buried on Thursday.

He said “this is an order from the president and from the governor of the state.”

According to him, “We cannot continue to watch criminals as a parallel government, doing what they want and carrying sophisticated firearms, maiming and killing innocent citizens in the state.”

The governor further directed for the disbandment of five communities and the removal of the village and district heads of the affected communities in the emirate with immediate effect as they were accused of harbouring bandits.

He said that any person or group found associating with bandits should also not be spared but treated as the firearms carriers and bandits.

Responding, the Emir of Anka, Alhaji Attahiru Ahmad said “we need more security personnel who are also committed to carry out their responsibility effectively.”

The emir reiterated that the people had no problem of herders/farmers clashes at the moment.

“What we are facing is armed banditry by trigger happy criminals who attack innocent rural dwellers and steal their cash and property, ” he said.

Bawan Daji village was attacked by bandits for two consecutive days, (last Tuesday and Wednesday) where they killed over 30 people.

Human Trafficking : I slept among corpses in Libya — Nigerian returnee

Short Story: Death on a good friday

Her death must have been very painful.

The call came after he informed his wife that he would be home for Easter. He looked at the phone with so much disgust.

The air smelt of nothing far from tension. Sergeant Tim had put his men under pressure for four sleepless nights.

Easter Tuesday

Everyone’s work was at stake: the Inspector-General,  the Commissioner of Police, Tim’s, and that of his men. In fact, their tenure in office depended so much on him finding the killer and bringing him to book –the dead was long gone.

The police men had earlier combed the area before they surrounded a particular house. Tim had earlier put the house on a twelve hour surveillance, because all evidence led them back to the bungalow, which sat at the back of a mansion on Boulevard Street.  The suspect didn’t  make a move since the surveillance. They gathered that she bought the house for him, solely for her personal service. From their investigation, he gathered that it was the trendy thing among women of her status on the Island, because they could not afford to be seen, sneaking about in hotel rooms with their side chicks, like their husbands.

Sergeant Tim gave the order with the wave of his four fingers in mid-air, and some men who were dressed just like him drew close to the house, while those that stayed behind acted as a backup. The case tied all their fate and carrier to the senator’s waistband.

When they got to the door,he could feel the weight of fatigue on his men, and heard their heart pray eagerly for a break in a case that, kept them on their toes for more than seventy-two hours and away from their families for Easter. He knew that some of them only travelled home once in a year or once every festivity period. They could not afford to live close to their family, due to the incessant transfer,  or afford to travel home all the time, because the pay was too poor, and they could not afford it. It was better to send the money home for upkeep.

At the count of three, Sergeant Tim gave a heavy kick on the door, it flew open, tear gas followed, and with their face masks on, they took their position, and rushed into the house,  one after the other. Each man was busy, looking for the suspect in one room or the other. Sergent heard Clement’s voice:

“Sir, I think you need to see this.”

He turned from where he stood, and with some effort, he walked to the voice. To his greatest surprise, their nightmare dangled from a rope, and not too far from him, he noticed the bloodied boots that left foot prints, all over the house.

Thursday Night

Sergeant Tim busily puffed out some smoke after the call with his wife; he was always thrown into deep thought, each time he called her. The demand from his work no doubt had put a tear to their fifteen years; both lived a separate life, and each knew what the other did, but cared less. He could not remember spending a full year whenever he was transferred to any place.

Clara came from nowhere and placed her two hands on his shoulders, he knew she heard their conversation, all the time. Clara was a smart one, she knew her place in his life, and didn’t try to be too demanding like the others. He tried to get up, and join her in bed, but another call came through.

“Sir!”

The commissioner’s base voiced blasted at him through the phone.

“We have a serious case on our hands. You must report to the address I sent to your phone, first thing in the morning.”

“Yes, sir!”

The line went dead, and Clara went back into the darkness, just like she came.

The Early Mornings

A gloved hand pried the heavy door open. He was still confused on why the commissioner picked him for the case even as he stepped on broken glass. The glass had been separated from a small wedding frame. He picked the frame off the floor and looked closely at it; a man and a woman smiled to the camera. Tim brought the portrait closer, and noticed that it had been tampered with; a rough line was used to scratch the woman’s upper torso. He looked up, and one of his men brought a transparent evidence bag.

Tim surveyed the rooms in the mansion, one after the other; the luxury furniture was turned upside down. It was too obvious that the suspect made away with some goodies. He got to the room where she lay, and thought of how devastated the senator must have felt, when he was informed of his wife’s death.

The drawers in the room had all been forced open. The air conditioner still chilled the room, and the television was turned on. He wondered what must have led to her cruel death. The woman was obviously in her late fifties, but she had the body of a thirty year old.

From all indications, she was pretty. Her night gown was socked in her blood due to the knife wounds. Her death must have been very painful. Tim wondered where her husband must have been, and what he did at the time of his wife’s death. It was the domestic assistant that discovered the body, when she came up to call her madam to dinner. Her Madam never had visitors, but how come death paid her a surprise visit?

The Discovery

Sergeant Tim didn’t know if it was necessary to feel pity for the dead or annoyed. The senator’s wife didn’t deserve to die like a rat? She was too busy with her sugar toy while her husband went about his duties; although he was known to be a popular one with the ladies.

She offered her boyfriend so much, but it seemed that he wanted more. He closed her file, drew out his gun, and left to make an arrest.

‘Just Before I Do’ premiere movie tickets sold out

The organizers of the premiere of the new movie “Just Before I do, set to hit cinemas from Friday, April 13, 2018 have announced that the tickets for the premiere of the movie have all been sold out. According to them, more than 1000 tickets have been sold out. Perhaps, the movie will be the first Nollywood movie to sell tickets for her premiere  in Nigeria and sell out all halls which will be used for the screening.

The movie features Omowunmi Dada, Eddie Watson, Omilani Oluyinka, Chief Jide Kosoko, Kalu Ikeagwu, Shaffy Bello, Afeez Oyetoro (Saka), Judith Audu and more.

While reacting to the development, the producer, Mr Omilani Oluyinka said  they were shocked that the idea of selling the premiere tickets worked.

“We did not set out to make history of being the first to sell ticket and fill all halls for our premiere. It was a decision we had to take to curtail the numbers but we were shocked to realise that we now have more than the numbers we would have catered for had the premiere being made free. We are grateful to God and we hope others who cannot join the premiere will visit the cinemas immediately after the premiere to  see the movie. It is a decision they will not regret”, he said.

The history making movie will have the stars of the movie present at the premiere.

Saving NSITF from avoidable crash, giving workers their dues

By Kabiru Ushafa

Recent revelations of sleaze at the Nigeria Social Insurance Trusts Fund, NSITF, a key agency of the federal government saddled with the task of mobilising funds for the prompt payment of workman’s compensation to Nigerian workers, are to say the least, highly embarrassing.   It is clear to all that since its inception, the NSITF has never suffered such high level of pillage and haemorrhage, leading to the inability of the agency to discharge its statutory functions to the workers, thereby leaving them with a sour taste in the mouths and almost defeating the purpose for which it was established by the government.

The discredited board headed by a female politician with many labour leaders as strategic representatives, allegedly made away with a staggering sum of N62.3 billion from the coffers of the NSITF between 2011 and 2015 while it was ‘actively working’ with a faction of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, to ‘protect’ the interest and  well-being  of the workers in the agency. Shockingly, the vociferous NLC faction did not see the danger of aligning itself with such a malevolent board to plunder the commonwealth of workers in the agency and did not even raise the alarm to draw attention to the monumental looting.   The bubble burst only because some patriotic workers in the NSITF daringly reported the alarming rot in the agency to the EFCC, which began to arrest and investigate the suspects. Incidentally, two of the six key suspects being prosecuted by the EFCC for the NSITF scam, represented labour-related agencies in the fund.

But the NSITF has reasons to appreciate the Minister of Labour, Employment and Productivity, Dr. Chris Nwabueze Ngige, who quickly understood the hidden power game building up at the agency and acted swiftly to prevent the vital establishment from being hijacked by forces still loyal to those who plundered the funds and are actively using the proceeds to fight for their clearance in the ongoing probe and prosecution of the suspects. Ngige, who has survived many political battles in the past, including an ambush while in office as Anambra governor, is not new to the unfolding drama at the NSITF and has not hidden his resolve to box the culprits into submission in the interest of the workers, whose compensation has not been forthcoming for many years now. The minister while raising the nine-man panel to probe the accounts of the NSITF, noted that the agency’s account had not been audited for five years and had suffered massive looting to the extent that in one instance N30 billion was carted away while in another N5 billion was taken away and converted to dollars without vouchers.

There are whispers however, that the Administrative Panel set up by the Minister with requisite experts not below the rank of directors carefully selected from the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, Auditor General of the Federation , the Budget Office of the Federation , National Salaries Income and Wages Commission and the Federal Ministry of Labour, does not enjoy the support of a faction of the NLC, which appears to be more interested in the inauguration of the new board of the NSITF before any probe is done .

But the labour minister, who has received insists the financial mess at the NSITF must first be cleared before a new board is put in place. In fact, this was what informed the non-inauguration of the Chief Frank Kokori-led board of the NSITF on the 15th  of February 2018 when the minister inaugurated other boards of agencies under his ministry in Abuja.

Ngige has stoutly rebuffed all subtle and overt entreaties and threats from a faction of the labour with the mantra that ‘Kokori is our man’ and must be sworn in as NSITF board chairman while the probe goes on. He fears strongly that like the sacked board, which allegedly frittered away the   funds of the NSITF with the active support of key labour representatives on its board, those clamouring for the ‘hasty inauguration of the new board’ with the NSITF house still on fire, may not understand the vulnerability such could expose the fund to.

The minister seems to have convinced himself and the Presidency that the campaign spearheaded by a section of the labour movement could have other implications. The minister has also found support from the United Labour Congress, ULC, whose General Secretary, Didi Adodo, in clear appreciation of the rot in the NSITF and the urgency of an in-depth cleansing, has asked the government to do the needful to save the agency from total collapse. “The plundering that has taken place in the NSITF is enough for any right-thinking organization and comrade to support a major probe that will not only unearth what has taken place but will also bring the perpetrators to justice,” Adodo said.

Adobo was supported by the Deputy President of UCL, Comrade Achese, who demanded that the roles played by the representatives of the Labour and the private sector in the alleged NSITF fraud be probed and those found culpable, punished, adding that the Nigerian workers should rise above board.

However, the NLC believes that with Kokori ‘their man’ as chairman, and with its two statutory nominees, in and another two from NECA on the saddle of the NSITF, it would be able to wrestle control from whoever is leading the agency and stamp its authority on it. It may even decide whether the probe of its former members now under trial should proceed or not. That seems to be the major bone of contention between the two gladiators in the power game.

The NLC’s ambitious calculation is however regardless of an internal threat from their breakaway brothers in the newly formed United Labour Congress (ULC) who have been petitioning the Labour ministry and the presidency that its 18 affiliate unions must be nominated into all the labour-related parastatals such as the NSITF, National Directorate of Employment (NDE) National Productivity Centre (NPC) where the Labour Acts mentioned the NLC.

The ULC has gone further to ask the Minister to extend the investigation to the Trust Fund Pension Ltd- a pension Fund Administration in which NSITF has 40% majority Equity with NLC, TUC, NECA, Skye Bank and Niger Insurance.   Though the company is an NSITF initiative, the NLC/TUC and NECA with 15% and 10% shares respectively, are currently engaged in a bitter struggle over the appointment of Trust Fund Directors with the Managing Director and the Executive Directors of the NSITF. The NLC and their sympathizers want their non-Executive Directors on the Board of NSITF to be inaugurated urgently so that they can flow from the NSITF into the Trust Fund Pensions, thereby increasing their numerical strength of directors on the board.

Politics: EPA chief Scott Pruitt's security detail kicked down the door of a pricey Capitol Hill condo where he rented a room because they thought he was unconscious — he was just taking a nap

scott pruitt press conference

The protective detail reportedly found Scott Pruitt waking up from a nap.

  • In 2017, Environmental Protection Agency administrator Scott Pruitt's protective detail believed he needed emergency assistance at the condo he was living in.
  • After failing to get ahold of Pruitt, the detail broke down the glass-paneled door to gain access.
  • The detail reportedly found him waking up from a nap.
  • The EPA reimbursed the condo's landlord.

Environmental Protection Agency administrator Scott Pruitt was taking a nap when his protective detail broke down the glass door at a Capitol Hill condo building where he was renting a room, according to an ABC News report published on Friday.

On March 29, 2017, Pruitt's protective detail reportedly believed he was unconscious and and needed emergency help. The detail initially banged on the building's front door and tried calling to get his attention, but they were unsuccessful.

After failing to get ahold of Pruitt, a Capitol Police officer dialed 9-1-1: "They say he's unconscious at this time," the emergency operator was told, according to ABC News. "I don't know about the breathing portion."

Emergency fire units were also alerted to the incident.

Pruitt's detail eventually broke the glass-paneled door and walked up the stairs to find Pruitt still dazed from a nap, two sources said to ABC News. Pruitt reportedly declined medical services and a police report was not filed.

It was not clear why the detail believed Pruitt needed rescue.

The EPA paid for the damage to the condo, which was co-owned by an energy-lobbyist's wife. Pruitt lived in the condo for six months in 2017.

Pruitt's living arrangement raised questions after a Bloomberg report found that his single bedroom in a prime location was rented out to him for $50 a night. Pruitt paid only for the nights he slept at the unit for a total of $6,100 for six months.

Politics: EPA chief Scott Pruitt's security detail kicked down the door of a pricey Capitol Hill condo where he rented a room because they thought he was unconscious — he was just taking a nap

Sports: How to get tickets to the Masters, one of the most exclusive sporting events in the world

A Masters patron with a badge ticket hanging from his neck.

Tickets to the Masters are considered the second-hardest to obtain in sports, trailing only the Super Bowl.

  • Tickets to the Masters are considered the second-hardest to obtain in sports, trailing only the Super Bowl.
  • Tickets are cheap if you are lucky enough to be a patron or win the annual lottery.
  • If you don't get tickets directly from Augusta National, be prepared to spend thousands.

Want tickets to the Masters? It's possible, but it is not easy unless you are willing to shell out the big bucks.

Tickets — or badges — to the Masters tournament are considered the second-most exclusive in the sports world, trailing only the Super Bowl.

There are three ways to get in during Masters week: Patron badges, daily tournament tickets, and practice round tickets. Below we take a look at how to obtain all three.

Patron badges

Owning a patron badge is a lot like being a season-ticket holder for the Green Bay Packers, except more myseterious, because nobody outside of Augusta National knows how many exist. Once you have one, you can keep it for the rest of your life. You pay $325 each year, and you have access to the entire week at Augusta National for the Masters.

These badges are available on the secondary market through ticket brokers or hospitality groups offering Masters packages. Sellers often offer the badges on a daily basis, but that typically requires a sizeable deposit, and they must return the badge at the end of the day.

At TicketIQ, badges for the 2018 tournament are going for about $1500 for one of the tournament days or more than $10,000 for the entire week.

Children aged 8-16 can attend for free if they are with somebody with a patron badge. They do not have to be related.

If a person who owns a patron badge dies, it can only be transferred to a surviving spouse. Other family members are not eligible. If there is no surviving spouse, the badge goes back into the pool and is awarded to somebody on the waiting list.

The patron waiting list is uber-exclusive. Augusta National first created it in 1972. It got so long that Augusta closed the list in 1978. It was briefly re-opened in 2000 and Augusta National has not opened it since.

Daily tournament tickets

Since 2012, Augusta National has offered a limited number of tickets to each round through a lottery on their website. The deadline for applying for the lottery is typically June 1 during the previous year and only one application is allowed per address.

Tickets for the 2018 tournament went for $115 each and applicants were limited to two per round.

Practice round tickets

Augusta National also offers tickets to the practice rounds on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, through the same lottery on their website.

Tickets for the 2018 practice rounds went for $75 each and applicants were limited to four tickets per practice round.

Scalping tickets

The big thing to remember when buying Masters tickets from scalpers is that it is against the law within 2,700 feet of Augusta National.

People will also often wait outside of Augusta and ask for tickets from people leaving the tournament. Because of this practice, Augusta National now limits each ticket to three re-entries per round.

Tech: A Chinese space station is hurtling toward Earth — here's how to track the crash as it happens

An illustration of a satellite damaged by space debris.

Scientists are not sure exactly where China's out-of-control Tiangong-1 space station will crash. Here's how to follow along as it falls.

  • A falling Chinese space station dubbed Tiangong-1 will soon break up into chunks in the atmosphere and crash to Earth. It will likely go down on Sunday.
  • Scientists say it is nearly impossible to determine the exact time and location of the station's crash.
  • But you can follow along as it descends using sites from SatView, the European Space Agency, and more.

On Sunday, a Chinese space station called Tiangong-1 is expected to crash to Earth.

The 9.4-ton spacecraft went up into space in 2011, but in 2016, the Chinese government lost communication with it due to an apparent technical malfunction.

It's difficult to predict exactly when Tiangong-1 will re-enter Earth's atmosphere, and where it will break up into pieces before it lands. On Monday, the space station was at an altitude of about 130 miles. It has been falling more than a mile every day since then, and its rate of descent is also accelerating.

The exact location of the impending Tiangong-1 crash is still a mystery, but it will likely hit somewhere 42.7 degrees north or south of the equator. The chances of Tiangong-1's re-entry are slightly higher in New Zealand, Tasmania, the northern states of the US, northern China, the Middle East, central Italy, northern Spain, and parts of South America and southern Africa.

If you'd like to track Tiangong-1 as it falls, there are several sites you can check:

As of Friday at 3 p.m., Tiangong-1 is at an altitude of about 110 miles, with approximately 44 hours to go until it re-enters Earth's atmosphere on April 1 at 15:15 UTC (give or take 14 hours), according to the Aerospace Corporation.

Aerospace's map, seen below, shows the station's approximate location in its orbit (as of Friday afternoon):

Strategy: 9 words and phrases only nurses understand

You probably won't see this nurse slang in a medical textbook anywhere.

Want to be a better-informed patient? We compiled a list of the secret code words a nurse would use and exactly what they mean.

  • If you've ever been a patient in the ER or a doctor's office, odds are you've heard a nurse throw around some unusual words or phrases.
  • Thanks to popular TV hospital dramas, we're familiar with phrases such as "coding", "stat," and "crash cart".
  • But there are other names, phrases, and abbreviations nurses use to describe situations and patients to each other that you just wouldn't know the meaning of unless you asked. So Business Insider asked.

Medical jargon is pretty impossible for anyone outside of the profession to understand.

TV shows and documentaries have gone some way in shining a light on some of the confusing acronyms and phrases used in hospitals and doctors offices.

But there are still plenty of words we're left in the dark about.

Business Insider asked seven nurses and scoured Quora to find out just what the secret phrases nurses use on the job really mean.

Frequent flyer

In the medical world, patients who show up to the ER time and time again with various different ailments are often referred to as "frequent flyers," Liz, a nurse with two years of experience, told Business Insider.

Rose Cottage or celestially discharged

The Rose Cottage sounds like a lovely place, but you might want to hold off before you book a two-night stay.

Marianne, a nurse with four years of experience, told Business Insider that in the UK, Rose Cottage is what nurses call the mortuary. And they often call the deceased a "Rosey."

When someone dies in the US they're said to have been celestially discharged, Redditor mikenesmith wrote in response to the thread "The secret slang of hospitals."

Tachy

This isn't a misspelling for "tacky." If you overhear a nurse say "tachy' they're not insulting a patient's dress sense. Marianne said it's short for tachycardia, which means a fast heart rate.

Code brown

You might be familiar with code blue — an emergency code for an immediate resuscitation that's often shouted on shows like Grey's Anatomy and ER. But have you ever heard of a code brown?

Nancy, a nurse with 45 years of experience, told Business Insider that it's used when there's a poop situation. Specifically, when a patient needs to be cleaned up from a bowel movement.

Chocolate hostage

This one's not quite as menacing as it sounds.

Amy, a nurse with six years of experience, told Business Insider that "chocolate hostage" is nurse-speak for a patient who's suffering from constipation.

NPS

Nurses can spot a patient suffering from NPS a mile off.

Classic symptoms include a clenched jaw, furrowed brow, and a baby wrapped in cotton wool, Glenys, a nurse with 22 years of experience, told Business Insider.

She said that patients diagnosed with NPS are showing signs of what nurses have dubbed "New Parent Syndrome" — overprotective parents who bring their newborns into hospital for displaying perfectly normal baby behavior.

Walkie-talkie

Gail, a nurse with 25 years of experience, told Business Insider that if a patient can walk, talk, and take care of themselves, then they're classed as a walkie-talkie.

PITA

The word pita might make you think of hummus, but if you hear it in a hospital, it means something totally different.

Liz, a nurse with two years of experience, told Business Insider that among nurses, a PITA is a patient or family member who is a pain in the a–.

Sundowning

As the sun sets on another day on the hospital ward, elderly patients can sometimes begin to display signs of delirium. They become confused, agitated, and act totally out of character as twilight approaches.

In the medical world, this behavior is known as "sundowning," Hannah, a physician's assistant with two years of experience, told Business Insider.

Politics: The office that staffs the White House has reportedly turned into a hangout spot where young staffers can go to 'vape' and play drinking games

Employees at the White House's Presidential Personnel Office "iced" the deputy director of the organization, according to a report from the Washington Post.

  • The deputy director of the White House's Presidential Personnel Office (PPO) was "iced" at an office event.
  • "Icing" is a game in which a bottle of Smirnoff Ice is hidden, and when found, must be chugged while kneeling on the ground.
  • The PPO is reportedly understaffed and has become a common hangout spot for happy hour events during the Trump administration.

Employees at the White House's Presidential Personnel Office (PPO) "iced" the deputy director of the organization, according to a report from The Washington Post on Friday.

"Icing" is a game in which a bottle of Smirnoff Ice is hidden, and when found, must be chugged while kneeling on ground.

At a happy hour to celebrate the deputy director's 30th birthday, he found the bottle of Smirnoff Ice and had to chug. The White House confirmed to The Post that happy hours and the icing game are common in the PPO, but not unique to that specific office.

In addition, the PPO's office adjacent to the White House has become a hangout spot for young staffers, where they can eat snacks and smoke electronic cigarettes, also known as vaping.

The report of the icing came amid concerns about the agency, which is tasked with vetting administration appointees. According The Post, the PPO has been understaffed while tasked with sifting through the records and qualifications of nearly 4,000 appointees, almost half of whom are required to be confirmed in the Senate.

White House principal deputy press secretary Raj Shah shrugged off reported problems and understaffing at the PPO.

"Despite historic obstruction from Democrats in Congress, the Presidential Personnel Office is filling the administration with the best and brightest appointees who share the president’s vision for the country," Shah said. "Staff work tirelessly and have experience consistent with the practice of previous administrations."

Vested, Provincial Interests Threatening To Tear Nigeria Apart – Atiku

Atiku Abubakar

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on Nigerians to imbibe the virtues of love and sacrifice that characterised the life of Jesus Christ.

Abubakar, who is a Chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), made the call in an Easter message issued by his media office on Friday in Abuja.

He described the two qualities as essential to the unity of Nigeria, especially at this time “when vested and provincial interests threaten to tear the Nation apart’’.

He also encouraged Nigerians in leadership positions to use the opportunity of the Easter celebration to reflect on their stewardship to the people and the Nation.

“Our leaders, at all levels, should follow the virtues that define this season – sacrifice, love and charity – and come together to help all Nigerians resolve the differences that divide them.

“We must not allow those who seek to divide us to pretend as if our problems are as a result of another ethnic or religious group,’’ Abubakar said.
