Our trajectory this year sent AFRIFF a million miles ahead – Chioma Ude
So, the biggest festival of films in Africa – AFRIFF – came and passed (October 29 through November 4), but, we could not just hang our laundry to dry. We caught up with the team that produced such ‘glamorous carnival’ that got the world talking and they had some things to say, that you do not hear, of course, when they give opening speeches and closing prayers.
We started with the brain behind the advent of AFRIFF, Chioma Ude and had a very enlightening conversation with her.
She threw some light on the event itself, her relationship with her team members and… you know what? Read the interview below:
You found AFRIFF, do you think the 2017 edition is a step ahead of previous editions?
Yes, it is a step. No, I don’t think it is a step, it is a million miles ahead. Because of our collaborations, the trajectory we took this year. And it’s not from us soliciting, it’s from us doing a good job.
Do you think there is anything that needs improvement?
Errrm… as human beings, we have to improve every day. I see all our flaws; we are the greatest critics of ourselves. At the end of it all, I swear to God, we are horrible.
I remember the closing ceremony, everyone says it is so good but, we keep on looking for ways to improve ourselves.
What inspired AFRIFF and what has kept you going?
The love of films, not just the love but the business of it inspired me.
The joy we bring, especially to the younger generation has kept me going. The older generation is not left out though.
In a 2016 interview, you mentioned being broke, hopefully, that is by the way. But, how much support (financial) do you get?
Everyone laughs loud.
I would say something. Last year I mentioned being broke, yes. Last year I had a house on my shoulders. This year, I would say I had an egg on my shoulders.
I would tell you something about financial support.
If the French Embassy comes and says, I would pay all the tickets, they have taken N15 million away.
If another company comes and says, oh! We are partners in Eko Hotel and we are going to give you 50% discount, they have automatically saved you N20 million.
We have a lot of that, as well as cash.
How does AFRIFF pass its message?
We always try to pass the message during the festival.
We focus on women, on children. This year we also focused on technology and we tried to have a seminar around that, during the festival.
What kind of impact does AFRIFF have in Africa?
I’m very funny with impact. I don’t pay attention; I just keep going. But, going back to my staff, to people, to what I hear, I hear we are making a huge impact.
And, that’s why we have all the foreign countries coming on board to partner, so we can move this train forward.
Does AFRIFF really ‘Unite’ considering the festival showcases mostly Nigerian content?
I am going to throw this back at you. Where did that question come from?
If you were part of the festival this year, you would have noticed that we had mostly foreign movies. We had only three Nigerian movies.
We had a change of festival Director, who was not particular about Nigerian movies.
If you were good, you would get it, if you were not, you would not get it.
This year, more than ever, we had more foreign movies.
But, I would say something again about Nigeria.
If at some point you see more Nigerian movies because the quality has improved, then, that is what it is.
Final words?
I like final words.
There is something I have been saying. I just say… let’s keep doing it.

Morning Teaser: 'My wife used my money to rent apartment for her lover'
Chief Omenka realized the hard way that his wife of 25 years was cheating on him with a younger man and the consequences is very dire.
"Dear Pulse,
My name is Chief Omenka, a 56-year-old businessman. I am not very conversant with this social media thing but one of my daughters who is a fan of your outfit introduced me to it and said I should write in so people can weigh into my issue.
So I hope I will be able to get useful advice before I do what is in my mind which may not be good because of the way I am feeling right now.
I have been married for 25 years now and in all those years, I have tried to be a good husband to my wife, Nneoma and our five children. Two of them are graduates already and I have made sure that they do not lack anything I can afford.
ALSO READ: "Morning Teaser: 'My wife was caught red-handed having sex with our neighbour'"
I opened a thriving business for my wife, bought cars for her and made sure her family also enjoy from me. I have personally sponsored two of her brothers abroad and they are doing very well in their businesses.
I don't what else a man can do for his family that I have not done but you won't believe that I recently found out that my wife, a 45-year-old woman is actually in a relationship with a younger man.
I found this out some months ago when an old friend and business partner hinted me that my wife had been dating the young man for over a year and had rented and furnished an apartment for him as well as buy him a car.
Imagine how much I suffer to make my money and my wife used it to be a sugar mummy for a man old enough to be her son.
I had to be very sure, so I mandated someone to be following her and when I got the evidence I wanted, I confronted her and initially, she denied and even accused me of lying against her.
But when I presented her with the evidence including the photographs of the two of them together at different functions, she broke down and confessed, begging me never to expose her.
ALSO READ: "Morning Teaser: 'I caught my wife in my bed with our landlord'"
Our children are all very mad at her and where I come from, it is a great abomination for a married woman to indulge in adultery and if some sacrifices are not carried out, the consequences could be devastating.
Some of the sacrifices include her walking naked in the marketplace to atone the gods of our lands. Though I am a Christian, I know if she does not carry out the sacrifice, she could die or a calamity could even befall me.
How do I go about this issue? Should I hide her shame or expose her to save my own skin? Do I divorce her and allow her to her fate?
Chief Omenka."
Dear readers, after going through Chief Omenka's story on Morning Teaser today, what do you think he should do?

[The Church Blog] We have just one question for The Experience team #TE12
We waited for this moment all through the year. As soon as the official countdown began, we could hardly hide our excitement. The Experience has become a legacy as the worship event that other worship events aspire to be. When it debuted in December 2006, it was mostly thought of as an overexcited gathering of Christians who would soon lose their spark, but year in year out, the light shines brighter.
In the midst of the high hopes and enthusiasm, The list of headlining ministers for the Experience 2017 was released and it was met with a rather ambivalent response from adherents. Some were excited and others felt the event was soon losing its peculiarity as a worship event.
The reason behind the decline in enthusiasm is not far-fetched
The line up of ministers for the experience featured all of the faces we know. They are the faces we have gotten familiar with in the past few years; From Tope Alabi to Chioma Jesus to Nathaniel Bassey, Micah Stampley, Donnie Mc Clurkin and others. All the ministers at this year’s Experience have been on the Experience stage at least once. They are ministers who have established themselves as successful in the gospel music industry for years.
#TE12 is an Experience like never before with anointed ministers like Travis Green, Micah Stampley, Chioma Jesus, Nathaniel Bassey amongst others. Don't miss it!

The line up presented an almost predictable worship experience. Although spontaneous and spirit filled, we can almost predict the performance of every single person in the lineup.
Here’s an idea of what people are saying about the lineup
@TheExperienceLG nice. Would be great to see some gospel rappers on the next line up of the experience, and acts like okeysokay, henrisoul, pastorjay, protek, daboomsha, gamie, Tru South, and even Roof Top Mcs. Keep up the great work.

Teargas, chaos as Kenyatta to be sworn in for disputed second term
Kenyan police fired teargas and clashed with both ruling party and opposition supporters Tuesday ahead of the swearing in as president of Uhuru Kenyatta after two disputed polls that have left the nation deeply divided.
As foreign and local dignitaries poured into the 60,000-seat Kasarani stadium in Nairobi where the ceremony is to be held, the opposition attempted to gather for a “memorial rally” honouring the more than 50 people killed, mostly by police, in four months of political upheaval.
However police fired volleys of teargas and beat opposition supporters, prompting running battles in the area, an AFP reporter said.
Meanwhile at the Kasarani stadium chaos erupted as a crowd attempted to force its way into the venue, prompting police to fire teargas at Kenyatta supporters who tried to fight their way in.
“I just want to see President Uhuru Kenyatta because I voted for him, why are we being beaten like NASA (opposition),” said Janet Wambua, who was among the angry crowd.
Joseph Irungu of the interior ministry planning committee had said there was space for 40,000 people who did not get in to watch the event on big screens outside the stadium. However no such screens were provided, further angering the crowd.
Around 13 mostly African heads of state are expected to attend the ceremony where Kenyatta, 56, will be sworn in for his second and final five-year term.
These include the presidents of South Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia and Somalia — among others — while prime ministers, foreign ministers and special envoys will represent other African nations, as well as Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Ukraine and Serbia.
– Two elections and a historic court case –
Kenyatta’s inauguration comes after the Supreme Court validated his victory in last month’s rerun poll.
However, the swearing-in may not draw a line under the country’s political crisis with Odinga vowing to fight on.
The electoral strife goes back to an August 8 poll that was annulled in September by the Supreme Court, citing “irregularities and illegalities”.
The court ordered a rerun in October that was boycotted by the opposition, handing Kenyatta a landslide of 98 percent of votes cast by just 39 percent of the electorate.
The disputed election season has split the country along ethnic and regional lines, although political violence has not reached the scale of that which followed a 2007 poll when 1,100 were killed.
Odinga, denied the presidency for a fourth time this year, believes that he was cheated and the 72-year-old has refused to recognise the result.
He has promised to found a “third republic” — following independence from Britain in 1963 and a new constitution adopted in 2010 — as well as to continue a programme of protests and economic boycotts aimed at undermining Kenyatta’s “dictatorship”.
The current political crisis draws on a deep well of social, ethnic and geographic grievances in the country of around 48 million people.
In areas loyal to Odinga, an ethnic Luo, there is a sense of having been ground down and discriminated against since independence, not least by Kenyatta’s Kikuyu group, which has given Kenya three of its four presidents.
The months of disruption and unrest, plus the holding of two separate elections, have badly affected the economy, hitting the poorest hardest while leaving the wealthy political elites relatively unharmed.

Anger: Here is how God wants us to handle our temper
These Bible verses show us exactly how to control anger.
Anger is an extremely powerful emotion.
So powerful that most people, including the holiest of Christians, often struggle with keeping it in check.
Luckily for us, we don't have to do this by ourselves since we can rely on God’s word for help concerning everything including anger.
Here is how we can handle our temper, according to the scriptures.
Ephesians 4:26–27 says,
“Be angry, and do not sin: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil.”
Ephesians 4:31 adds,
“Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamour and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.”
Psalm 4:4 warns,
“Be angry, and do not sin.”
ALSO READ: We need to forgive ourselves and each other
Proverbs 29:11 tells us,
“A fool vents all his feelings, but a wise man holds them back.”
James 1:19–20 says,
“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.”
Proverbs 19:11 advises,
“A person’s wisdom yields patience; it is to one’s glory to overlook an offence.”
Colossians 3:8 encourages,
“But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.
Let's go into the world and do better.

Entertainment Roundup: D’banj pauses performance to rescue lady from molesters; House of Cards’ filming delayed again | More stories
It’s catch up time! Here’s everything you missed in entertainment yesterday and others that unraveled while you slept – and are still buzzing this Tuesday morning.
D’banj pauses concert to rescue molested lady
Kokomaster, D’banj has been getting mixed reactions from fans following a video that emerged yesterday that saw him abruptly stopping his performance to tend to a lady that got molested in the crowd.
The #Shutdownreloaded concert was held in a stadium and while D’banj performed his old track ‘Suddenly’, he caught sight of the act in the midst of the crowd.
D’banj called on security to get the lady out of the crowd while he described the act as barbaric.
Fans have praised D’banj for the selfless act calling out molesters who fill up such events.
Looks like no House of Cards for us anytime soon!
Following the Kevin Spacey sexual abuse scandal that has caused filming for the Netflix series he stars in, House of Cards to be suspended, it now seems fans will have to wait a bit longer.
Production for House of Card’s sixth and final season has again been postponed and this time, till December.
A letter was sent to cast and crew apologising for further delay and stating that it is okay for them to get on to other projects in the interim.
The letter partly reads: “We continue to work with Netflix with the hope of resuming production soon. As we continue these discussions, we have determined together that the crew will be paid for an additional two week hiatus – beginning on November 27th and continuing through December 8th.”
It adds, “…we will certainly understand if crew members need to find other work in the interim which will prevent them from rejoining us. We sincerely appreciate all you have done.”
They also noted that the production is bigger than one person.
Dr Sid releases new visuals
Mavin records artiste, Dr Sid who has been notably silent on the music scene in recent months has now returned with visuals for his recently released track, Jensimi.

Church: Why Christians still need to go to a physical place of worship
It is not even an option but a total necessity for believers.
We currently live in a digital era where we have everything, some might say including church, at our fingertips.
Hence, it makes sense that some would consider a physical place of worship obsolete, right?
After all, we can only just stay in our individual homes and use our mobile devices to live out faith without actually having to dress up and actually go out.
While this might sense, going to church is still important.
Here is why church is such a big deal
1 Corinthians 12:27 tells us that “Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.”
Does this mean we have permission to be solo Christians? No, it does not. It means together, we make the church, the Body of Christ.
As individual members, we have to come together in order to truly live and be the Body, the unit that represents God on earth.
ALSO READ: Using social media or tech does not matter but….
More proof
Acts 2:42 tells us that the early believers “continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.”
These people, the ones that we now emulate, knew the importance of fellowship amongst like-minded people.
They realised how beneficial it is to believers to gather around to read the word of God and break of bread. There is just something about living this out that simply can not be found in our solo spiritual journeys.
Why some might argue that there is no need to go to church
Many people have several reasons why they refuse to go to church. For some, it is the misleading pastors, while others say it is the immorality and corruption in what should be the House of God.
All valid points but it still does not change the fact that we just can not give up on fellowshipping with one another.
You can ask God to take you to church that suits your spiritual needs but there is just no justification for not fellowshipping with like-minded believers.
There is a reason why the saying, ‘ No man is an island’ exists. We were not created to be on our own. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but we absolutely need our own Tribe.
Find a church with believers that motivate your faith, further your spiritual growth and stick to it.
We are the Body of Christ after all.

Poultry farmers laud FG on national egg production
Poultry farmers from Ondo State under the aegis of Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), have commended the Federal Government initiative of the National Egg Production (NEGPRO), saying it would go a long way to increase egg production in the country.
The state chairman of the association, Mrs Augustina Ebiwonjumi, said apart from increasing egg production in the country, the initiative will also empower more farmers and create jobs.
Ebiwonjumi, while speaking during a town hall meeting of poulry farmers in Akure, Ondo State capital, noted that an increase in the egg production will positively contribute to the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the state and the nation’s GDP.
Speaking during the meeting, the Senior Special Assistant to the state governor on agriculture, Mr. Akin Olotu, described the initiative as laudable, saying it will stimulate egg production in the country.
He noted that the National Egg Production scheme is one of the programmes designed by the present administration in the country to develop agriculture across the country
He said “the purpose of setting up the scheme is to make sure that the products are affordable to the general public. I want to assure you that the state government has indicated its readiness to key into the programme to rank the state as one of the best in the area of egg production in the country.”
He assured that the state government will not hesitate to render assistance to farmers so as to make the scheme a success.
The National Coordinator of the Programme, Chief Tunde Badmus, urged farmers in the state to key into the programme, saying the scheme will create over one million jobs across the country.
He disclosed that arrangement had been concluded to give out loan of N4.3 million to every interested poultry farmers and called on the farmers to key in into the programme.
He said “the beauty of it is that the loan under this programme is single digit so we are not paying any higher interest due to the support from the Ministry of Agric.

Vincenzo Montella: Milan sack manager; Gennaro Gattuso takes over
Despite spending heavily in the summer, the Italian club has not scored in five home games and are seventh in the league.
Italian club, AC Milan have sacked their manager, former Italian International Vincenzo Montella following a depressing goalless draw at Torino over the weekend. Former Milan midfielder, Gennaro Gattuso is set to take over.
Milan have not scored in any of their last five games at the San Siro. Six of their 14 games in the league have ended in defeat.
Despite massive spending during the summer that saw players like Giorgio Chiellini, Hakan Calhanoglu and Franck Kessie join the club, they are presently seventh in the league, 11 points off fourth position which would get them a place in Europe next season.
Poor performance and inability to get the best out of the new players are most likely the main reasons for his Montella’s ousting.
The Italian club languish in seventh place, 11 points away from the fourth position which would guarantee a place in the Champions League next season. They have not scored in any of their last five home games, and have lost six of the first 14 games of the league.
Gennaro Gattuso, who will be remembered as AC Milan’s midfield executioner in the 2000s, will immediately take over responsibilities as first team coach.

The Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has said those patronizing “anti-Fulani sentiments do so because of their hatred for Muslims and their inability to tolerate Islam.” MURIC said this while noting that those who speak evil of “Fulanis are fully aware that more than 95% of the Fulani population is Muslim.” In a statement by its […]

Neymar puts PSG on cloud nine at Monaco
Edinson Cavani and Neymar were both on target as Paris Saint-Germain edged champions Monaco 2-1 to climb nine points clear atop France’s Ligue 1 on Sunday.
But it was a frustrating night in the principality for the world’s most expensive teenager, as Kylian Mbappe missed a raft of chances on his return to the club who will bank 180 million euros ($214.8 million) when his switch to PSG becomes permanent at the end of the season.
PSG now have 38 points from 14 games and are unbeaten, nine points clear of Lyon and Monaco, with Marseille one further adrift.
“We’ve won at the champions, that’s good,” said PSG coach Unai Emery. “Now we have to continue the work and improve further.”
Cavani struck the opener, his 16th league goal this season and 22nd in all competitions, when he met a cute cutback from Julian Draxler on 19 minutes and toe-poked it into the top corner.
Neymar had rattled the post and Monaco nerves swiftly after the restart before winning a penalty as Almamy Toure ran into him.
Cavani had promised reporters Neymar would take PSG’s next spot-kick and so it was.
The Brazilian, who had inspired a 7-1 Champions League thrashing of Celtic in midweek, coolly sent Monaco ‘keeper Danijel Subasic the wrong way with a confidently-struck penalty on 52 minutes.
The home side may have sold several of their title-winning stars in the close season, but Leonardo Jardim’s men rallied.
Radamel Falcao, with 13 goals from ten Ligue 1 starts ahead of this game, managed a fine header when surrounded by four PSG defenders and also fired a free-kick narrowly over.
Veteran Portuguese midfielder Joao Moutinho pegged Paris back with a free-kick nine minutes from time that struck Mbappe’s head on the way into the corner, but Monaco could not find an equaliser.
“It’s difficult against this team with so much quality in it,” Monaco midfielder Fabinho told French television.
“It’s working very well in midfield with Marco (Verratti) and (Julian) Draxler,” PSG midfielder Adrien Rabiot said, after all three were impressive.
Earlier Sunday, Memphis Depay starred with a double as Lyon thumped Nice 5-0 on Sunday to move into second behind Paris.
France forward Florian Thauvin scored a first-half winner as Marseille stretched their unbeaten run to nine games and stayed just a point off the Champions League places with a 1-0 home win over Guingamp.

Ikpeba Sets Quarter-Final World Cup Target For Super Eagles
By Kayode Ogundare:
As the countdown to the 2018 FIFA World Cup draws near, former Super Eagles forward Victor Ikpeba has insisted that the national team should be able to reach the quarter-finals next year in Russia.
Speaking in an interview with Lagos-based ChannelsTv, the 1997 African Footballer of the Year reckons that the gap between the big teams and the smaller ones has diminished considerably and this gives Nigeria the chance to surpass its previous Round of 16 achievement.
“I think a reasonable target will be a quarter-final spot becuase we have the players to do it. Three times now we have gotten to the second round and I think we have the best chance to move further than that with this current side,” he began.
Ikpeba reckoned that the class of 1994 could have gone all the way but for naivety and insists the current side is best-placed to break the second round barrier.
He said: “Given the quality of talent we had in 1994 and maybe 1998 too, we should have achieved more than we did but we now have the chance to set that right and I believe it is not an impossible task for the Super Eagles to achieve in Russia.”
Ikpeba, a member of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics gold-winning U-23 team, also played at two AFCONs winning a bronze and gold as well as two World Cup appearances. He had 19 caps for the Super Eagles, scoring five goals.

Rohingya still fleeing Myanmar despite repatriation deal
Rohingya are still fleeing into Bangladesh even after an agreement was signed with Myanmar to repatriate hundreds of thousands of the Muslim minority displaced along the border, officials said Monday.
The arrangement struck by the neighbours on Thursday raised the prospect of at least 700,000 Rohingya Muslims living in overcrowded camps in southeastern Bangladesh being returned to Myanmar.
But at least 3,000 refugees have crossed since then, the United Nations said in its latest report on the crisis, with guards at check-posts along the frontier also reporting a largely uninterrupted flow of newcomers.
“The number of arrivals has declined, but it has not stopped,” Bangladesh border guard commander Lieutenant Colonel S.M. Ariful Islam told AFP.
Islam said at least 400 refugees had passed by guards under his command along the border with Myanmar since the agreement was signed.
An estimated 624,000 Rohingya have fled a military crackdown in Myanmar since August described by UN and US authorities as ethnic cleansing.
The repatriation agreement applies to Rohingya refugees living in Bangladesh who fled Myanmar in two major outbreaks of violence since October 2016.
It does not extend to an estimated 200,000 Rohingya refugees who were living in Bangladesh prior to that date.
The UN refugee agency UNHCR has raised concerns over the terms of the arrangement, saying conditions for the safe return of the Rohingya were not yet in place.
Bangladesh said at the weekend those returned would initially live in temporary shelters or camps.
Rohingya leaders have said they will not return to Myanmar unless they are recognised as citizens with full rights and ensured protection from violence.
Myanmar does no recognise the Rohingya, denying them citizenship and restricting their movement.
The UNHCR says any repatriation deal must include “the informed consent of refugees”.
