Bitcoin broke through the $10,000 barrier for the first time on Wednesday as it extends a stratospheric rise that has delighted investors but sparked fears of a bubble.
The virtual currency hit a high of $10,903 in Asia, according to Bloomberg News, about 14 times its value at the start of the year.
The breakthrough is the latest in a spectacular run for the online money dubbed “digital gold” by its advocates, which began life in 2009 as a bit of encrypted software supposedly written by an unknown coder with a Japanese-sounding name.
Bitcoin, which was valued at just a few US cents when it was launched, has no legal exchange rate, no central bank backing it and is traded on specialist platforms.
What began as the preserve of computer nerds and financial experts has gained a following among a broader group seeking alternatives to traditional investments, while it has been used to pay for items from a pint in a London pub to a manicure.
The virtual currency has attracted as much anger as praise, however.
The boss of JP Morgan Chase labelled it a fraud, while China has closed down Bitcoin trading platforms and South Korea this week expressed concern it could lead young investors to become embroiled in fraud.
It got a big boost last month when exchange giant CME Group announced it would launch a futures marketplace for Bitcoin, which has not been listed on a major bourse before.
The announcement sparked a surge in its value — it has risen 50 percent since October alone. The current market value of Bitcoin is now around $180 billion, according to Coinmarketcap.com, which tracks the market capitalisations of cryptocurrencies. That puts it within touching distance of Coca-Cola, which is worth $195 billion.
But the spectacular rate of growth, which has seen it increase in value from a 2017 low of $752 in mid-January, has also triggered concerns, with critics noting the currency has suffered wild swings in the past.
“This is a bubble and there is a lot of froth. This is going to be the biggest bubble of our lifetimes,” warned hedge fund manager Mike Novogratz at a cryptocurrency conference Tuesday in New York.
‘Crazy numbers’
Stephen Innes, of forex broker Oanda in Singapore, warned of “crazy numbers” and added: “I’m a little bit fearful that retail traders are jumping in under the false guise of this will run on forever.
“We know things never go in a straight line.”
But other commentators were more positive, saying the unit’s surging popularity will attract cash from traditional investors, such as hedge funds and asset managers.
“I think the momentum is still very much to the upside,” Kay Van-Petersen, macro and crypto strategist with Saxo Bank in Singapore, told AFP.
He said it could still suffer pullbacks, but predicted it would be worth $50,000 to $100,000 in the next six to 18 months.
Transactions happen when heavily encrypted codes are passed across a computer network.
Bitcoin and other virtual currencies use blockchain, which records transactions that are updated in real time on an online ledger and maintained by a network of computers.
But it has not been without controversy.
In one of the most high-profile scandals, major Tokyo-based Bitcoin exchange MtGox collapsed in 2014 after admitting that 850,000 coins — worth around $480 million at the time — had disappeared from its vaults.
Bitcoin’s use on the underground Silk Road website, where users could use it to buy drugs and guns, was also presented as proof it was a bad thing.
While analysts expect the currency to suffer falls, they are betting it will prosper in the long term and see the CME launch as the next big test.
“If it survives the CME, there is no reason why it won’t continue to rise higher,” Greg McKenna, chief market strategist at AxiTrader, told AFP.

A physically challenged woman who was blessed by God with a baby has committed the atrocious crime of killing the innocent child.
The incident, according to an eyewitness, Simon Ivan Ohwo, happened in Ughelli North Local Government Area of the state on Monday, November 27, 2017, at the Iwhrekpokpo Quarters.
Ohwo who posted the ugly incident and a video of the suspect on his Facebook page, said Elohoh who is in her late 20s, and a plantain chips seller, gave birth to the baby late in the evening of that day by herself and promptly killed him later in the night.

"Wonders, they say, will never end; some of these wonders happen beyond human imagination, just like in this case of homicide.
A well-calculated plan has been executed by one Miss Elohoh who is in her late 20s and resides with her mother and siblings at No. 1, Omohwovo Street, Iwhrekpokpo in Ughelli North.
Miss Elohoh who is physically challenged and also a plantain chips seller, murdered her child after delivery today, November 27, 2017, in her home.
Reports have it that she put to bed a handsome boy late in the evening of that day in her house without aid or assistance from neighbours or a midwife.
But the cries of the baby attracted the attention of one of the neighbours who call on others on the supposed good news. On arrival, they saw that the door was locked and Miss Elohoh refused to open the door but on persistence, one of the siblings opened the door.
The kind-hearted neighbours did a marathon in getting some of the needed materials like clothes and food for the baby and mother since she didn't buy any.
Jubilation was on as people celebrated the arrival of the bouncing baby boy, most especially, from a physically challenged person, not knowing that Miss Elohoh had evil intentions for the child.
After the celebration, everyone went home, leaving Elohoh and one of her siblings since the mom was not around that day, hoping to check on her in the morning.
In the morning, the neighbours trooped in to see how Elohoh and her baby was doing only to find out that there was no baby anywhere.
They asked Elohoh about the child and she claimed that the father came late in the night and took the baby away having noticed that the child was not breathing well as claimed by her.
The neighbours could not believe the story Elohoh gave and decided to interrogate her; she held on to the same story but one of them suggested that the sibling will give a better story of what actually happened to the child.
And now this is the story as told by him. He said late in the night when everyone was gone, Elohor boiled warm water and forced it on the child to kill him but the child could not take much which ended up burning the entire mouth of the day old child.
As if that was not enough, when the child defied death, she took a rag and tied it around the child nose and mouth which suffocated the child to death.
When she noticed that the child was dead, she took the corpse and put him in a sack loaded with refuse and plantain peels, then gave it to an insane man to throw off early in the morning as refuse.
On hearing this, the whole neighborhood was filled with sadness on this evil act done by Elohoh. A search was carried out at all the refuse dumps in the area and finally, the corpse of the child was found with scars and bruises.
As we speak, this evil woman has been handed over to security agents at 'B' Division of the State Police Command for further investigation and actions.
Also, the father of the child is still unknown as she has refused to confess who impregnated her; neither the mother or father has shown up at the station.
Again wonders will never end….. Only God will help us."

“Workers on levels 8-12 receive 75 percent of their salaries while officers on levels 7 and below receive their full pay.
“All workers in the state have received their salaries up to October this year. As we pay active workers, so we pay pensioners.
“The only outstanding payment to pensioners is the gratuity and this is due to workers who choose not to participate in the Contributory Pension Scheme and therefore left service in 2011/2012.
“We recall that workers on levels 8 and above received the July and August arrears when the government paid in July this after receiving the second tranche of the Paris Club Loan Refund.”
The commissioner also blamed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the economic hardship in the state.
He said “We wish to state that the modulated salary was arrived upon as the best option the government could take in the interest of the workers due to the PDP induced economic recession that crippled the state finances.

By Adeboye Amosu: Chippa United goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi, has been cleared to return to action by the club’s doctors following the neck injury he sustained in last Saturday’s ABSA Premiership clash against Mamelodi Sundowns, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
The Nigeria international was stretchered off in the 68th minute of the encounter at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium following the injury and was replaced by Brighton Mhlong after receiving treatment for about five minutes.
The club has however come out to calm frayed nerves about the goalkeeper’s health status by stating that he is in good shape.
“X-rays revealed that goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi, did not suffer a fracture during the match against Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday, 25 November. He will rest for a few days, and be mornitored throughout the week,” reads a statement on the club’s Twitter handle.
Akpeyi has endured a campaign blighted by injury this season and has made nine appearances for Chippa United in the league.
The 31-year old has however kept five clean sheets in the nine games he has featured for the club this season.
He will hope to return to action for Chippa United in their next league clash against
Kaizer Chiefs next week Wednesday.
Towering defender James Okwuosa is the other Nigerian at the club.

The pattern recognition technology will scan posts for comments like 'Are you ok?' and 'Can I help?'.
Facebook announced that it is rolling out artificial intelligence technology to help it detect posts, videos, and Facebook live streams that contain suicidal thoughts.
The "proactive detection" technology is being deployed globally after a trial on text-based posts in the US, which was announced in March. However, there is one rather large exception: the European Union, where data privacy laws make it tricky.
"We are starting to roll out artificial intelligence outside the US to help identify when someone might be expressing thoughts of suicide, including on Facebook Live," said Guy Rosen, Facebook's VP of product management, in a blog post. "This will eventually be available worldwide, except the EU."
"This approach uses pattern recognition technology to help identify posts and live streams as likely to be expressing thoughts of suicide. We continue to work on this technology to increase accuracy and avoid false positives before our team reviews."
"We use signals like the text used in the post and comments (for example, comments like 'Are you ok?' and 'Can I help?' can be strong indicators). In some instances, we have found that the technology has identified videos that may have gone unreported."
The social media giant already allows users to report friends that they think might be at risk but the use of AI should help the company to spot potential suicides earlier.
Facebook said it is also improving how it identifies and contacts the appropriate first responders (police, fire, ambulance, etc) when it identifies someone at risk.
Within the so-called "community operations" team — an army of people that review reports about content on Facebook — there is a dedicated group that focus on suicide and self harm. Facebook said it is using AI to prioritise the order that posts, videos, and live streams get reviewed in a bid to get first responders to the people that need them most.
Facebook may also contact users at risk (and their friends) via Facebook Messenger, sending them links to relevant pages on websites such as the National Suicide Prevention Line and the Crisis Text Line.
Mark Zuckerberg, cofounder and CEO of Facebook, announced on his Facebook page on Monday that the technology should help Facebook to save lives. He wrote:
"Here's a good use of AI: helping prevent suicide.
"Starting today we're upgrading our AI tools to identify when someone is expressing thoughts about suicide on Facebook so we can help get them the support they need quickly. In the last month alone, these AI tools have helped us connect with first responders quickly more than 100 times.
"With all the fear about how AI may be harmful in the future, it's good to remind ourselves how AI is actually helping save people's lives today.
"There's a lot more we can do to improve this further. Today, these AI tools mostly use pattern recognition to identify signals — like comments asking if someone is okay — and then quickly report them to our teams working 24/7 around the world to get people help within minutes. In the future, AI will be able to understand more of the subtle nuances of language, and will be able to identify different issues beyond suicide as well, including quickly spotting more kinds of bullying and hate.
"Suicide is one of the leading causes of death for young people, and this is a new approach to prevention. We're going to keep working closely with our partners at Save.org, National Suicide Prevention Lifeline '1-800-273-TALK (8255)', Forefront Suicide Prevent, and with first responders to keep improving. If we can use AI to help people be there for their family and friends, that's an important and positive step forward."

The popular maxim “the mill of justice grinds slowly” seems to be made for Nigeria as the rate at which the rights of the citizenry are disregarded in the country is not in the interest of the downtrodden or those experiencing injustice in the society.
The rate at which it takes to dispense justice in our country has made it difficult for individuals to trust the justice system as a result, many individuals that have been cheated in the past chose to keep quiet and “leave it for God”.
Rape victims, robbery victims, abused individuals among others in need of Justice refused to approach the court all for the known long process.
Sometimes cases takes as much as 25 yrs to resolve here in Nigeria, while in other nations of the world, judgement in such cases will be dispensed in less than 10 months all covering the lowest to the highest court of the land but we are still struggling with that here in Nigeria.
Twelve years after the #Apo6 killings in Abuja, the victims are yet to get justice as an FCT high court granted the first judgement in the case instituted against the suspects. Now they need to cross the hurdles of the judgement being appealed in the Appeal and Supreme courts which may not be resolved in the next 20 years.
This same scenario is playing out in the ALUU4 killings, they are still waiting for Justice several years after the incidence, this same scenario played out in Osun state as an aftermath of the 2007 general elections in the state. The eventual winner Governor Rauf Aregbesola could not get justice until few months to the end of the tenure of the former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola.
These are few examples of cases that have been delayed at Nigerian courts before eventual conclusions by the court, often the resolutions come when they are of no real use to the people in question.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has insisted that Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil will not leave the club in January while revealing that Super Eagles forward Alex Iwobi is a huge doubt ahead of Wednesday’s Premier League clash against Huddersfield Town at the Emirates.
Iwobi was in from the start for Arsenal in their hard-fought 1-0 away win against Burnley on Sunday before he was replaced by Jack Wilshire on the 67 minutes, while Sanchez and Ozil have been linked with January exits.

Chile forward Sanchez, 28, joined Arsenal in 2014 from Barcelona, and has scored 56 goals in 113 appearances.
Germany midfielder Ozil, 29, has had 45 assists since his debut in September 2013, more than any other Premier League player.
Wenger added: “As long as they are here, they give their best for the club.
“In my head, they stay until the end of the season. Unless something unbelievable happens I don’t see that changing.”
Asked if they will remain beyond the end of the 2017-18 campaign, he added: “I am not the only one to decide that. They have to decide that as well.”
Also speaking ahead of Wednesday’s clash against newly promoted Huddersfield Town, Wenger said: “Iwobi got a dead leg, we are not sure he will be available. Cazorla of course is still out.

A marriage is between two people only. It doesn't include fans or trolls posing as fans. Privacy is an essential ingredient for any relationship. Sharing videos on Instagram and SnapChat is the same thing as welcoming strangers into your matrimonial home. It becomes messy when you allow social media addicts into your lives.
We cannot take away the fact that you guys are celebrities and there will be aspects of your marriage that would overlap onto the red carpet. Of course, appearing at events and featuring in the same movies are some of them. If it has nothing to do with your professional lives, it shouldn't be on social media for consumption.
Please, resist the urge or the temptation to milk your marriage for social media currency. A satisfying marriage beats going viral on social media. Don't do it for hashtags, do it for yourselves.

The former chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, Abdulrasheed Maina, has finally decided to speak out on the allegations of corruption levelled against, asking President Buhari to grant him an audience, so he proves himself.
Antecedent: The reinstatement and promotion of the former pension boss sparked criticism and controversy from Nigerians after he was declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in 2015.
President Buhari had ordered his immediate dismissal from the Federal Civil Service.
Highlights: Speaking in an exclusive interview with Channels Television during News At 10 on Monday, Maina insisted on his innocence.
He claimed that the President was being deceived by the people who surround him.
“Thank God our President stands for the truth, the unfortunate thing is that some people around him whom he has given trust are lying to him; this one I can attest to and I can give you instances, I can give you documentary evidence,” Maina said.
“I’m appealing to you Mr President, there are so many things people are not telling you; when I get to that public hearing I will tell you some things that nobody ever told you Mr President because I never had the opportunity to sit down with you.”
He adds:
“I recovered money for the last administration and I recovered money for this administration. Most people may not understand this but let me explain this to Nigerians because I want the truth to be told and I want Nigerians to understand the truth and know what is going on in Nigeria.
“Listen, I am not afraid of anybody, I am saying the truth. People portray themselves as if they are saints around the President; it’s a lie, they are not. We recovered as a team, N282 billion cash. Aside from the N282bn, we were able to bring information and caught 43 pension suspects.
“They have threatened me, they have threatened my lawyer, they have threatened my brother, sister; they have threatened us all that I will be killed.
“Mr President, I will give you information and documents that will fetch you over N3 trillion now in Nigeria, give me nine months. Within the first three months, I will show you N1 trillion just like I showed you N1 trillion in this 2017,” he said.

The event slated for 5:30 pm (WAT) at the University of Massachusetts Boston Campus Centre, 2nd Floor, Room 2545 is one of the series of tours for the book in Nigeria, U.S., Canada and England.
How to Win Elections in Africa: Parallels with Donald, written from the years of experience garnered by its authors – Chude Jideonwo and Debola Williams – working on presidential campaigns in both Nigeria and Ghana, explores how citizens, through elections, can uproot constrictive power structures.
The book was first launched at Yale University in partnership with the Yale Council on African Studies, at an event during which Bishop Mathew Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto delivered a culturally resonant keynote speech.
This was followed a day after, by a reading hosted by the Africa at Ohio platform of Ohio University, Athens in the United States and held the third leg at Vancouver, Canada where Chude Jideonwo made a paper presentation at the second International Conference on Communications and Media Studies.
‘How to Win Elections in Africa: Parallels with Donald’ has since been launched at the two most important book festivals in Nigeria – the Lagos Book and Arts Festival (LABAF) in Lagos and the Ake Arts and Book Festival which holds annually in Abeokuta.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has said it is targeting 14,000 megawatts (mw) of electricity capacity under the Transmission Expansion and Rehabilitation Programme (TERP) being financed with about N383bn ($1.064 million) from international donors.
The interim Managing Director of the company,Mr Usman Gur Mohammed who disclosed this to journalists in Abuja recently on the achievements of the firm so far said, “In the last 10 months, we have added 1,000mw capacity to raise the wheeling capacity to 7,000mw and that is much more higher than the 4,500mw capacity the Distribution Companies (DisCos) can take.”
The TCN boss who was appointed as head of the all important mid-utility in the power supply chain since January 2017 noted that he was purging the federal government agency of old habits to have an agency that practises global standards in expanding the electricity grid.
He said, “We are working to raise the transmission capacity higher than the 7,000mw because according to the Power Pyramid structure which is the global best practice, when the Generation Companies (GenCos) attain 7,000mw as they are now, the transmission capacity should be twice of that at 14,000mw and the DisCos’ network capacity should be twice of transmission which is 28,000mw. But this is not the case now in Nigeria.”
He said the local funding through the electricity market revenue is poor at below 40 per cent which does not support the huge investment plan. “The shortfall is because of the DisCos’ poor revenue collection.
“We have sought for external funding for the Transmission Expansion and Rehabilitation Programme which has been approved by the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing and the Federal Ministry of Finance along with some multilateral donors,” he explained.
Mr Mohammed said he is taking steps to ensure that some past mistakes in projects implementation are not repeated. He noted that some local contractors do not have the capacity to execute projects and that TCN has this year alone spent over N2.5bn clearing containers at the ports because those contractors could not do it.
“Now we have decided that to pick contractors, we will need the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) that has been selected to bring in the equipment and have them installed themselves and not through the joint ventures or subletting of contracts that used to be the order in TCN,” Mohammed said.
Mohammed who by virtue of his past experiences equally acknowledged the delay in the procurement process of internationally financed projects said the donors have agreed to do ‘Advanced Procurement’ to avert any delay of projects.

Condemning the sack of the teachers in Kaduna state, the group said Governor El-Rufai chose a ''totally unacceptable way'' to address the issue while his counterpart in Kano and Sokoto fashioned remedial programmes to train and retrain under-qualified teachers.
Urging the governor to address other issues affecting education in Kaduna state, the group said 50% of pupils in public schools still sit o the floor while over 4000 schools in the state are without windows and doors.

“We know that till date, pupils in 50 percent of public schools in the state sit on the floor due to absence of furniture. Most of the 4,250 public primary schools have no doors, roofs and windows. There are also no water and toilet facilities. Some of the schools are heavily over-populated. All these are fundamental problems that militate against good education for the teeming masses. They need to be tackled urgently if the government is really serious about reforming the system,” the committee said.
Recall that Kaduna State Government recently sacked 21,789 teachers for failing competency test.
Meanwhile, two states, Kogi and Bayelsa government are planning to assess their primary school teachers to improve the state education.
Immediately the government resolved to sack the teachers who failed the test, series of protest greet El-Rufai's decision.
The teachers, the labour and teachers union in the state clamp down on the government to rescind the decision to lay off the teachers.
Primary school pupils also took to the street in protest shouting Ba muso.
However, Governor Elrufai was riled to see pupils who were supposed to be in the classroom protecting against government decision about teachers who according to the government are not competent enough to teach the pupils.
