Strategy: I ate only foods that have been boycotted by the alt-right and liberals — and it revealed an absurd truth about Trump's America

Eating Papa John's pizza.

As the boycotts added up, it felt like you could craft an entire diet based on what certain people are refusing to eat. So, I decided to do just that.

  • Food brands have been hit hard by boycotts by the right and left.
  • I decided to go on a boycott diet, eating only foods boycotted by the left one day, and only foods boycotted by the right the next.
  • Liberals may be missing out on tastier food than conservatives — but there's much more to the story.

In a politically polarized country, what you eat can say a lot about what you believe.

The past two years have seen an unending series of politically motivated boycotts and counterboycotts. People on the left ditched Papa John's after the founder slammed NFL leadership, only for the right to start smashing Keurigs because the brand pulled advertising from Sean Hannity's Fox News show.

With the boycotts adding up, it felt like you could craft an entire diet based on what certain people are refusing to eat.

So, I decided to do just that.

For one day, I would only eat items boycotted by the left and endorsed by the right. The next day, I would do the opposite, feasting on liberals' favorite foods, which conservatives refuse to touch.

The experience would leave me feeling physically ill — and emotionally queasy.

I started the day off with a conservative favorite — Chick-fil-A.

Progressives arguably kicked off the modern era of politically motivated food boycotts in 2012, after Chick-fil-A donated to anti-LGBT groups and its CEO voiced opposition to same-sex marriage.

If you look at Chick-fil-A's sales, the high-profile boycott was a failure. Just two years after the controversy, Chick-fil-A beat KFC to become the biggest chicken chain in the US in terms of sales.

Among Republicans, the chain still ranks No. 1 on Harris Poll's ranking of the reputations of the 100 most visible companies in the US. Across all consumers, the chain is ranked significantly lower, in the No. 17 slot.

Eating a Chick-fil-A breakfast sandwich, I'm forced to admit that Chick-fil-A's egg and sausage sandwich is superior to almost any other fast-food breakfast offering.

That might be one reason that boycotts of Chick-fil-A didn't actually hurt sales.

Conservatives doubled down to support the chain during the boycott. And, with high-quality food and menu items that no other chain has managed to replicate, apolitical and more progressive customers may have been more inclined to turn a blind eye to executives' viewpoints.

For lunch, I tried to partake in a more short-lived alt-right obsession: Wendy's.

Not every right-wing boycott starts with the alt-right, a loosely allied group of white supremacists, men's-rights activists, and other far-right people. But with the social-media power of many alt-right personalities, they often play a role in starting or amplifying boycotts.

Wendy's was designated the " target="_blank"official burger of the Neo-Nazi Alt-Right movement" by a white-supremacist website after the brand's Twitter account tweeted, then deleted, an image of Pepe the Frog. Once a common meme, Pepe was declared a "hate symbol" by the Anti-Defamation League after being adopted as a symbol of people — primarily the alt-right — spreading racist and anti-Semitic messages.

However, when I showed up at Wendy's, the location was closed for renovation — which may have been for the best. Still, the Wendy's Pepe tweet is a convenient representation of how quickly things can go from light-hearted fun to straight-up hate speech on social media.

With Wendy's closed, I decided it was time to wade into the pizza culture wars.

Papa John's founder and CEO John Schnatter slammed NFL leadership in November over the ongoing controversy over players' protests during the national anthem.

Many on the left trashed Papa John's for Schnatter's comments, promising to boycott the chain. At the same time, people on the right rallied around Papa John's as "America's pizza."

It was a dramatic time for the pizza chain. DiGiorno tweeted implying that Papa John's subpar sales were due to pizza tasting like "dog s—". Neo-nazis and the alt-right came out to support the chain. Finally, after two weeks, Papa John's tweeted that it hadn't meant to disparage the protests — and ended the tweet with the middle-finger emoji.

I have to disagree with the critics — Papa John's pizza does not taste like "dog s—."

It's actually pretty good!

If I'm picking a personal favorite out of the core three (Pizza Hut, Papa John's, Domino's), I'm going to go with Domino's because I like a puffy, almost artificial-tasting crust. But, Papa John's is perfectly fine, especially if you order the pan pizza. And, of course, the chain's cheesy bread is divine.

My day eating like a committed alt-right boycotter wasn't that different from a typical day in my life — just with a bit more fast food.

For dinner, I drank a Coors Light and ate some pasta I had bought from Whole Foods. Both were predictably average, but I had plenty of choices to pick from.

Progressives' semi-official list of boycotted brands is a long one maintained by Shannon Coulter. Coulter started the #GrabYourWallet boycott spreadsheet in October 2016 to encourage people to boycott companies that do business with Trump's family.

So, that means I had a lot of options to choose from.

Currently, there are more than 70 brands on the Grab Your Wallet boycott list, primarily retailers that sell Ivanka Trump's fashion line.

King's Hawaiian, See's Candies, Trident gum, and Welch's all made the "de-prioritized" protest list for advertising on "Celebrity Apprentice," a show that Trump is a producer on, but that is unlikely to return to air. Amazon — and therefore Whole Foods — made the list for advertising on Breitbart and carrying Trump products. MillerCoors and Yuengling made the list for having executives who support Trump or donated to his campaign.

Unfortunately, I found it hard to stomach the conservative diet — literally.

As previously stated, I quite enjoy eating Chick-fil-A and, to a lesser degree, Papa John's.

But, it would be a violation of journalistic ethics not to include the fact that my digestive system violently rebelled against my right-wing diet. As someone who was mostly fine after eating 150 shrimp in one sitting, I can't quite say what went wrong — but something certainly did.

As I dealt with the indigestion, I contemplated food boycotts. For someone who supports same-sex marriage — like, for example, me — boycotting Chick-fil-A makes sense.

But, are boycotts worth it if they only help Chick-fil-A's sales? If the chain treats workers well, is it perhaps actually more progressive than other fast-food chains? Is is unethical to eat a chicken biscuit — or just naive to think most people would be willing to surrender their chicken in the first place?

I hoped adopting a more liberal diet would sooth my troubled mind and stomach.

I started the day with a triumvirate of liberal brands: Kellogg's, Starbucks, and Chobani.

Many on the right ditched Kellogg's after the cereal brand announced in November 2016 that it would no longer advertise on far-right site Breitbart. Starbucks has been boycotted for everything from hiring refugees to featuring a lesbian couple in ads. And, Chobani sued right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones after he spread misinformation about the yogurt brand hiring refugees.

This breakfast was not outside of my comfort zone.

While I am a fan of Chick-fil-A and eat it somewhat regularly, I buy Starbucks much more often — roughly once a week. I grew up eating Kellogg's cereal, and Chobani became part of my breakfast routine in college.

Everything I ate for breakfast was predictably tasty and adequate. Alt-right boycotters who are mad about Kellogg's advertising policy aren't missing out on anything groundbreaking, but they are cutting some pretty reliably good cereals out of their diets.

Lunch from Pizza Hut was another story.

Having gone on the record as enjoying Papa John's, I will now say that Pizza Hut — at least from the combination Taco Bell-Pizza Hut in New York City — is very bad.

In keeping with my liberal diet, I wanted to enjoy Pizza Hut. One day after Papa John's CEO blamed subpar sales on NFL players' protests during the national anthem, the CEO of Pizza Hut's parent company, Yum Brands, said the controversy wasn't affecting sales. Support for Pizza Hut immediately exploded online from the left.

However, the personal pizza from the chain was the most offensively bad pizza I have ever consumed. I was only able to finish half of this stale, overly sweet mess.

For dinner, I ate more Whole Foods, which is being boycotted by the right as well as the left.

In February, Trump supporters threatened to boycott Amazon after news broke that it would support Washington State in a federal lawsuit challenging Trump's executive order barring people from seven majority-Muslim countries from entering the US.

And, in June, Trump tweeted that the "Amazon Washington Post" is "FAKE NEWS."

The fact that both the left and the right are boycotting Amazon is one of the things that turns me off from the recent explosion of boycotts. If both sides of the political spectrum are coming out against Amazon, and the company is still wildly successful, are boycotts working at all?

Overall, my two days of dieting only revealed what an absurd position Americans have found themselves in.

I would say conservatives trump liberals when it comes to boycott diets. Then again, eating like an alt-right supporter also left me doubled over in gastronomical distress. You win some, you lose some.

However, comparing boycott diets based on taste — or even their impact on my digestive system — misses the point. Just because Chick-fil-A is more delicious than any other thing I ate doesn't mean it should get a get-out-of-boycotts-free card.

I also found myself wondering what exactly the cut-off line for a boycott was.

For some, it's running ads on a TV show that isn't currently on the air. For others, it's hiring people fleeing war-torn countries who are legally in the US as refugees.

As the lists of boycotted brands add up, I mostly was just exhausted. In 2017, basically every brand wants to avoid taking sides — but, in the Trump era, that's impossible.

"We've never seen something like this — a consumer awakening, if you will," Chris Allieri, the founder of the communications and marketing firm Mulberry & Astor, told me earlier this year, in reference to the rise of consumer boycotts.

To believe in boycotts is to believe in an individual's ability to create change.

Surprisingly, my favorite item from the diet — the one I would most hate to give up — actually revealed the best reason to boycott.

Following boycotts, Chick-fil-A has attempted to move away from its conservative image and cut any talk of politics. Some franchisees have started donating to LGBT Pride events. And, three years after the boycotts started, the US Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage.

Basically, the boycott didn't hurt Chick-fil-A's sales, but it did send a message about Americans' increasing support of same-sex marriage.

If I'm optimistic, I can see today's boycotts similarly serving as a way for people to make their voices heard.

Boycotting the NFL, for example, have kept the spotlight on players kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality for almost two years. The boycotts may not actually be the one thing impacting NFL ratings, but it's kept the issue in the headlines.

Similarly, Nordstrom dropping Ivanka Trump's line after boycott threats may have been purely motivated by the fashion brand not selling well. However, the boycott helped bring attention to questions about how the Trump family could profit from the president's political power.

Many boycotts can feel like much ado about nothing, adding onto an already lengthy list of perceived slights. However, if protesters can use boycotts to highlight their values — identifying what Americans will and will not tolerate — then it is possible for them to actually create lasting change. At least, I hope so.

Strategy: I ate only foods that have been boycotted by the alt-right and liberals — and it revealed an absurd truth about Trump's America

[The Sexuality Blog] A SlutWalk is coming to Lagos

Slutwalk

I guess this is the last thing you’d expect to happen in Lagos, but it is actually happening. Lagos is having its very Slutwalk. The La Femme Foundation, a women’s right NGO is organizing the very first slut walk as a place where women can safely protest the rampant sexual violence targeted against women, educate women how to protect themselves and prosecute the men who deign to sexual harass them or even outrightly rape women. The Slutwalk is also meant to empower women who have suffered from rape and sexual violence and allow them speak publicly and plainly about their assault.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

You would think that this is the kind of thing that Nigeria’s myriad of magazines targeted at women would throw all their support behind, but it has actually been the opposite and even Adesua Oyenokwe’s  Today’s Woman (Oyenokwe still has some explaining to do because of her horrible interview with Bobrisky) went as far asking the organizers to drop it because that kind of thing would never happen here. Well the organizers didn’t even bother with the negativity and are going ahead with the Slutwalk. We at the Sexuality Blog think it is especially important that this is happening here and now, especially in the light of all the rape accusations by men of influence on young, vulnerable men and women that has been exposed in the last year. We need to publicize their atrocities and show everyone that it matters that we have a voice.

The Slut Walk will be held on December 17, from 9am with the meeting point at the Lekki-Ikoyi bridge roundabout.  The dress code is all black, with a gele on your head to show solidarity.

PDP S/W Crisis: Olafeso Heads To Appeal Court Ahead Of Party’s Convention

PDP, consensus candidate, PDP Senators

The Dr Eddy Olafeso led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South West, has headed to the appeal court few days to the party’s national convention slated for Dec. 9.

Mr Remi Olatubora, counsel to the Olafeso group, made this disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Akure.

Olatubora said he had filed a motion on Nov. 29 at the Court of Appeal in Ado Ekiti for a stay of execution against an interim order of Justice Taiwo O. Taiwo of the Ado Ekiti Federal High Court, which was delivered on Nov. 8.

NAN recalls that the federal high court had ordered the Olafeso faction to stop parading itself as executive members of the party in the South-West.

NAN also reports that the order of the federal high court was at the instance of another faction led by Chief Makanjuola Ogundipe, which had earlier dragged Olafeso group to court.

Olatubora said that the implication of the interim order was to deprive the Olafeso-led faction of its legal right to attend and participate in the Dec. 9 national convention of the party.

He said that the Olafeso-led executive was elected in the South West zonal congress which was duly convened on May 14, 2016 in Akure.

“We have filed a motion for a stay of execution and further proceedings in Suit No. FHC/AD/CS/18/2017, now pending before the Court of Appeal, Ado Ekiti Division.

“We have duly served the Registrar of the Federal High Court, Ado Ekiti to notify His Lordship, Justice Taiwo O. Taiwo for necessary actions.

“With this appeal for a stay of execution, the Eddy Olafeso-led executive remains the South West PDP leaders, who will lead delegates to the national convention in Abuja, come Dec. 9,” Olatubora said.

Politics: Trump says 'weak on crime' Democrats will pay after serial border crosser acquitted of murder

Trump border

Trump placed the blame with Democrats, who oppose Trump's immigration policies and support sanctuary cities, where local law enforcement is more lax.

  • President Donald Trump lashed out after a Mexican man who illegally entered the country was acquitted of murdering a woman in San Francisco.
  • Trump called the case a "complete travesty of justice" and said the Democrats will "pay a big price" at the ballot box for being "weak on crime."
  • San Francisco is a sanctuary city where local law enforcement ignores stricter federal penalties against illegal immigration, and the killer had illegally entered the US six times.

President Donald Trump lashed out at the Democrats after courts acquitted Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, a Mexican man who illegally entered the US six times, for the murder of a young woman walking on a San Francisco pier with her father.

"The Kate Steinle killer came back and back over the weakly protected Obama border, always committing crimes and being violent, and yet this info was not used in court," Trump tweeted.

Zarate was cleared of the murder charge, with his defense convincing the jury the shooting was a ricochet and an accident.

But he was convicted of possessing a firearm as a felon, which means the jury did have some knowledge of his criminal history.

In Trump's tweets on Friday morning he referred to Zarate's "exoneration" as a "complete travesty of justice," though acquittal and exoneration have technically different legal definitions.

Trump seized on Zarate's case early, as the killing took place in 2015 when Trump began campaigning for president on the platform of building a wall along the US's southern border with Mexico. Since the verdict on Thursday evening, Trump has called the case "disgraceful" and credited it for making US citizens angry with illegal immigration.

Ultimately, Trump placed the blame with Democrats, who oppose Trump's immigration policies and support sanctuary cities, where local law enforcement is forbidden from complying with federal immigration law.

If federal immigration law had been implemented, Zarate would have been detained longer after being arrested in his seven past arrests for felonies. Trump opposes sanctuary cities, and has threatened to cut their federal funding.

"The Schumer/Pelosi Democrats are so weak on Crime that they will pay a big price in the 2018 and 2020 Elections," Trump tweeted.

President Buhari’s presence at AU-EU Summit cogent, highly perceptive – Presidency

A Presidential spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu has described President Muhammadu Buhari’s contributions to the just concluded 5th AU-EU summit in Abidjan as cogent, timely and highly perceptive.

Shehu, who is the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, stated this in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday night.

According to him, during the summit which was held between Nov. 28 and 29, President Buhari demonstrated the pivotal role Nigeria plays in continental affairs and in the relationship that Africa must forge with other regions of the world.

He noted that discussions at the conference were productive and frank, saying this was due in no small measure to the interventions of President Buhari.

“Others who attended the summit described President Buhari’s contributions as cogent, timely and highly perceptive.’’

The theme of the summit was “Investing in Youth for a Sustainable Future.”

He said: “At the summit, the President declared that the single most important investment we must make is to grow and develop our economies in ways that will provide jobs for our youths.

“While we also must invest in education and in other social areas, he emphasized that it is upon our economic maturation that the future of Nigeria and Africa will hang.

“Without jobs, even educated youth become vulnerable to forms of extremism, ranging from joining the ranks of terrorists to risking their lives migrating to Europe through the “sea of sand that is the Sahara and the unforgiving waters of the Mediterranean.

“He said we must declare this the era of African industrialisation for this must be the primary goal of all AU members.

“President Buhari said this and future AU-EU summits must be dedicated to this goal.’’

On trade and investment, President Buhari said Nigeria was not opposed to trade reform but said reform could not be indiscriminate.
He said that trade reform should only occur within the context of the push to industrialise.

According to him, direct foreign investment that produces jobs and creates tangible wealth must be encouraged.

With regard to peace and security, President Buhari stressed the need for greater cooperation to halt human trafficking and the need to act to curb the deaths of desperate migrants.

The President, who focused attention on Libya, said the once stable nation had become a house of chaos where northbound migrants were often sold into slavery and the means of violent terrorism were transported southward to upend political stability and peace in the Sahel.

President Buhari called on the EU to work more diligently with the AU to bring normalcy to Libya and for the EU to be more forthcoming with humanitarian aid to those directly affected by terrorism.

He said that the exit of former President Mugabe was a closed chapter in Zimbabwean and African history.

“Mugabe symbolised a good dream gone badly awry.

“Now, the rebuilding of that nation can become a symbol of how Africa and Europe can work together to develop a society based on justice, democracy and shared prosperity.

“If this is to be the case, we must be careful not to disregard the aspirations of the common person in Zimbabwe.’’

On the developing situation in Togo, President Buhari along with five other West African leaders with one form of stake or the other sat down with President Faure Gnassingbe to press for an urgent agreement between the countries’s President and the coalition that had been opposing him.

“You must talk to each other and avoid political explosions,’’ the President said.

PDP S/W crisis: Olafeso heads to appeal court ahead of party’s convention

The Dr Eddy Olafeso led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in South West, has headed to the appeal court a few days to the party’s national convention slated for Dec.

[AD]

“With this appeal for a stay of execution, the Eddy Olafeso-led executive remains the South West PDP leaders that will lead delegates to the national convention in Abuja, come Dec. 9,” Olatubora said.

Adepoju: USA ’94 Super Eagles Were Ready For Big Teams In Group Stage

By James Agberebi: Former Nigeria international Mutiu Adepoju has claimed that the Super Eagles squad to the USA 1994 World Cup were not fazed about who they got in the group stage, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

After qualifying for the World Cup for the first time at the 1994 edition in USA, the Super Eagles were drawn in Group D with Argentina, Bulgaria and Greece who also made their debut.

The Eagles eventually topped the group on six points and qualified for round of 16, after wins against Bulgaria and Greece, while losing to Argentina.

Reminiscing on what the mood was like for the Super Eagles players back then prior to the USA 1994 World Cup draw, Adepoju stated that they were ready to face any country.

“We never had any problem or anxiety over which team we were to be drawn with,” Adepoju, who played in all the group games and the round of 16 clash against Italy at USA 1994 World Cup, told Completesportsnigeria.com.

“After qualifying for the first time for the World Cup, we just wanted to go there and have a good experience . We were not thinking of who to meet, we just wanted to go there, make Nigeria and Africa proud.”

Adepoju, who was also in the Eagles squad to France 1998 and Korea/Japan 2002 World Cups, added: “Even after the 1994 World Cup draw where we eventually got Argentina, we didn’t feel anything. Knowing that we would face them with Maradona, that also didn’t put fear in us. We just wanted the World Cup to start so that we could show the world what we could do.”

Man hacks 2 primary school pupils to death in Borno

The attack also left a female school teacher and an eight-year-old schoolgirl with injuries.

A local man attacked a primary school in the Kwaya-Kusar Local Government Area of Borno State and hacked two pupils to death with a machete on Thursday, November 30, 2017.

The man, identified as Gaji Adamu, entered Jafi Primary School, Kwaya Kusar town around 9:30am and carried out the attack that claimed the lives of the pupils, both boys aged about five and seven.

The attack also left a school teacher, identified as Ms Salamatu, and an eight-year-old schoolgirl with injuries.

According to a report by AFP, the teacher managed to raise the alarm after she was struck in the hands and the attacker was overpowered.

The state's Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Victor Isuku, confirmed the attack in Maiduguri later on Thursday and disclosed that the attacker was in custody under armed guard in a hospital after he was beaten by the mob that caught him. He also disclosed that the man is suspected to be mentally-unstable.

He said, "Today Thursday 30/11/17, at about 0930 hours, one Gaji Adamu, male of Kubu village of Kwaya Kusar Local Government Area, suspected to be of unsound mind, armed with machete entered into Jafi Primary School, Kwaya Kusar town and macheted two male pupils to death, while a teacher and a female pupil were wounded in the attack.

"As a result, irate youths mobbed the suspect, who is now unconscious and admitted in hospital under protective custody. The corpses and injured have been evacuated to Gombe General Hospital."

Despite the official toll of only two deaths, an eyewitness of the attack reported that the eight-year-old schoolgirl also died on her way to the hospital.

According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Malam Abdulhamid, a resident of the area, said that three pupils died as result of injuries sustained in the attack.

He said, "It is not clear how the assailant managed to infiltrate the school. He attacked pupils with a machete killing three of them and caused fatal injuries to others.

"A female teacher, Ms Salamatu, was also injured when she confronted the assailant in an attempt to save the children from the brutal attack.

"Some of the pupils sustained injuries while trying to escape. People came to their rescue and arrested the attacker."

The state's Commissioner of Police, Damian Chukwu, has directed for the transfer of the case to the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (CIID) for investigation.
