Pulse Opinion: In defence of Nigeria's 1st lady, Aisha Buhari

In defence of the Nigerian 1st lady, Aisha Buhari

Aisha Buhari is putting her love for country over her marriage to President Buhari.

On Friday, January 19, 2018, Aisha Buhari threw some heavy subs at her husband, President Muhammadu Buhari.

On both her Instagram and Facebook accounts, she shared clips of lawmakers calling out the President.

Obviously, such a move by the first lady did not go unnoticed most especially on social media.

Trending on social media

Aisha Buhari has 19,000 tweets on Twitter today, Saturday, January 20, 2018. It's not every day that a first lady would publicly throw shade at her husband.

For this present first lady, this, however, is not the first time, neither is it the second. Aisha Buhari has a track record of shading Mr President in public.

History of Aisha Buhari going rogue

In October of 2016, Mrs Buhari told the BBC that her husband is being held hostage by a cabal.

"The president does not know 45 out of 50, for example, of the people he appointed and I don't know them either, despite being his wife of 27 years," Aisha Buhari lamented.

"Some people are sitting down in their homes folding their arms only for them to be called to come and head an agency or a ministerial position," she added.

ALSO READ: President Buhari is aware of Nigeria's problem

In 2017, the first lady criticized the state of affairs at the Aso Rock clinic. “If the budget is N100 million, we need to know how the budget is spent. Along the line, I insisted they call Aso Clinic to find out if the X-ray machine is working, they said it is not working. They didn’t know I am the one that was supposed to be in that hospital at that every time" she said.

Cracks in the first marriage?

Clearly, there is a history of the first lady throwing jabs at her husband's administration. The issue at heart right now is if it is right for Mrs Buhari to be criticizing her husband publicly?

Aisha Buhari has definitely entered the history books at the first 'first lady' to criticize her husband. There are people who believe no matter how bad the President has performed, Aisha Buhari should not come publicly and call out her husband.

In an ideal marriage, it is presumed that husband and wife stick together at least publicly no matter what. However, let's not forget that the President's comment of 'the other room' in Germany was less than ideal. It seemed like a case of 'an eye for an eye'. It is clear that the presidential marriage in Aso Rock is far from picture perfect.

For love of country

The dilemma here is love of husband over love of country. Aisha Buhari seems to have picked the latter. She is calling President Buhari out because of his promises to the Nigerian people during the campaign period. She is also worried that the 'cabal', a shadow government of mysterious men might have hijacked the presidency.

These are sentiments that many common Nigerians have had for a while now. Aisha Buhari's indicates that she understands the plight of everyday Nigerians.

It is refreshing to see someone in Aso Rock calling out the powers that be. Aisha Buhari might not be remembered as a classic Nigerian first lady, but her actions and utterances have given her a unique space in history.

US Govt Shuts Down On Trump’s First Anniversary Over Immigration, Border Security Issues

Palestinian, Donald Trump; US President

For the first time since 2013, the United States government officially shut down on Saturday, January 20 due to divisions among US lawmakers over an unresolved dispute about immigration and border security matters.

The shutdown came as US senators on Friday failed to agree on a short-term spending bill that will last till February 16.

The spending bill required 60 votes in the 100-member Senate but only 50 Democratic Party lawmakers supported the bill before its deadline.

The shutdown formally began on Saturday, coinciding with the first anniversary of President Donald Trump in office after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer could not reach an agreement despite negotiations in the last minutes before the midnight deadline.

The dispute over the shutdown is expected to continue over the weekend as Democrats seek a deal over immigration reform, the major area of disagreement over the bill.

In a reaction, the White House has blamed democrats for shutdown insisting the Trump administration would not discuss immigration until the government was back up and running.

According to a statement from the White House, “The shutdown might be inevitable as Democrats want illegal immigration and weak borders.

“Tonight, they put politics above our national security, military families, vulnerable children, and our country’s ability to serve all Americans.

“When Democrats start paying our armed forces and first responders, we will reopen negotiations on immigration reform.”

Mo'Hits Records: Do we really want a reunion, or are we missing our ex-girlfriend?

Led by Don Jazzy, Mohits comprising of D’banj, Wande Coal, D’Prince, Dr Sid and Kay Switch made a comeback.

Deep down, once you truly love a person, you never stop loving them. Whether Mo’Hits, or your ex-girlfriend, there’s a still a part of themselves that they leave with you when they go.

Remember your last relationship. Think of how it ended against your wish and desires. Think of how the tears flowed like a river of pain, and your chest lost its pumping machine. Time ceased as your world crashed all around you when your lover said ‘goodbye’, and vanished from your life.

Compare this feeling to the time when you got the realisation that Don Jazzy and D’banj were never going to make music together; when they took the knife of egos and irreconcilable differences, to sever the bond, trust, friendship and goodwill that characterised Mo’Hits.

Think of all those conversations you had in the street corners and drinking tables, complaining about how D’banj and Don Jazzy could ruin something so precious to the culture, all because of something that seemed so trivial. Couldn’t they decide that Kanye West was not worth it? Could they not just hug it out like men, and move on to recording the next ‘Booty call’? What happened to all those photos of hugs, and money made on numerous stages across the world?

What happened?

While we felt pain they broke up in 2012, we can all admit that we have never moved on from Mo’hits. Nigerians, or those who remember their greatness as a unit haven’t truly relegated them to the back of minds. We no longer feel pain the pain of their disintegration. Time has ensured that old wounds are healed, but it hasn’t taken away our longing and endless questions of what would have been.

Every time we see D’banj on our social media feeds, either celebrating a new song, or pushing a new product, our minds are cast back to a time when things were better for all of us. Each day Don Jazzy samples a new record, or post a photo of his studio, we secretly long for D’banj to still be somewhere in the building, drinking a celebratory cognac to the promise of a new hit. Or simply playing FIFA with Wande Coal, while they discuss the difference between ‘Bangalee’ and Black Diamond.

That’s why, whenever they come together, it’s a big deal. It’s probably the reason why you are reading this article, earnestly searching for information or anything to feed the ache within you.

In December 2017, at Davido’s 30 Billion concert, they did come together. After two months of conversations, compromise and planning, Davido would succeed in bringing together these people on to one stage. What made it special was that they had everyone. Dr Sid, Kayswitch, D’Prince, and Wande Coal all showed up with their bosses D’banj and Don Jazzy. It was an emotional moment for many Nigerians who saw them roll back the years with their hits. My favorite was ‘Booty call’, one of their greatest magical moments of brilliance.

With that performance, comes renewed hope. Seeing them on stage brought the possibility that we might have our Mo’Hits again. We might not have them together as a cohesive unit under one business banner. But they can bind gather again for themselves and for the culture, to perhaps record one album, or take us on a tour around cities. You would like that. You would pay good money to have a Mo’Hits concert. It will be a big deal and a significant moment for our music industry. Rolling back the years would have a new meaning. This trip down memory lane would be savoured and celebrated.

Deep down, once you truly love a person, you never stop loving them. Whether Mo’Hits, or your ex-girlfriend, there’s a still a part of themselves that they leave with you when they go. It is those bittersweet memories, or the promise or reconnection that powers us to seek the warm embrace in the music, or in the arms of our past love.

We still want Mo’Hits to come back. We still want our exes in our arms. Because at the end of the day, art is an expression of love, and no matter where we get it, we will appreciate it.

I Will Never Forget How Jonathan Called To Congratulate Me – Buhari

Buhari, PDP, Benue

President Muhammadu Buhari has narrated his experiences during the two times he contested and lost the presidential elections in 2003 and 2007.

He however expressed reservation over the outcomes of the judgments delivered at the Supreme Court during the periods.

This is as he stressed the need for continuous voter education to enable Nigerians choose leaders of their choice in forthcoming elections in the country.

The President stated this when he hosted some leaders of the All Progressives Congress to a dinner at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Buhari, who narrated his experiences during the two times he contested and lost the presidential elections in 2003 and 2007, expressed reservation over the outcomes of the judgments delivered at the Supreme Court during the periods.

He, however, reiterated that it was the determination of the electorate and the use of the Voters Cards that made it possible for him to win the 2015 presidential election.

“The determination of our people and technology: the Permanent Voters Cards made it possible for us to be here. The PVCs worked well in 2015.

“That was why when the former President rang me, I will never forget the time. It was quartet after 5p.m. and he said he called to congratulate me and that he has conceded defeat. He asked if I heard him and I said yes and I thanked him for his statesmanship.

“The truth is after being a deputy governor, a governor, Vice-president and President for six years, and he took that decision is great. He could have caused some problems. He had stayed long enough to cause problems,’’ he said.

Buhari frowned at politicians using ethnicity and religion to score cheap political goals, saying from his experience in politics all those who stood behind him while struggling to secure justice at the High and Supreme Courts were outside his tribal and religious group.

He said: “Seven states of the North are only represented in my cabinet by junior ministers, ministers of state.

“In South East, I got 198,000 votes but I have four substantive ministers and seven junior ministers from there.

“You are closer to the people than myself now that I have been locked up here, don’t allow anybody to talk of ethnicity. It is not true.’’

The president further explained that, “I am the only politician that ended up three times in the Supreme Court and still virtually refused to give up.

“There is one thing that disabused my mind in a dispassionate way about ethnicity and religion across the country. You know that tribunal for presidential election started at High Court of Appeal. The President was my classmate. I missed only four of the court sittings.

“For that first phase, 2003, we were in court for 30 months. My legal leader was Chief Ahamba (SAN), an Igbo man. He asked the panel of judges to direct INEC to produce the voters register to prove to you that the election was done underground.

“When they came to write the judgment, they completely ommitted that. Another Igbo man, a Roman Catholic, in the panel of judges wrote a minority report.

“I went to the Supreme Court. Who was the Chief Justice? An Hausa Fulani, a Muslim from Zaria. After 27 months, Ahamba presented our case for two hours and 45 minutes.

“The Chief Justice got up and said they were going on break and when they return the following day, they will deliver the judgment. They went away for three months. That was what made it 30 months and when they came back, they discussed my case within 45 minutes.

“In 2007, who was the Chief Justice? A Muslim from Niger State.

“The third one, who was the Chief Justice? My neighbour from Jigawa State. The same religion and the same tribe.’’

Buhari, who acknowledged that he was aware of the problems facing the country, said he would continue to do his best in addressing them with a view to uplifting the quality of life of all the citizens.

The national chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, who led the party chieftains, said he was touched by the president’s narration of his political history.

“I was very touched by what you said. I hope it is understood in the proper perspective.

“It indicates quite clearly that you have listened to what people are saying. It has been such a terrible misrepresentation. You have seized this opportunity to say that you are not what people are saying.

“There are so many misconceptions. Look at the example you have given that those who stood by you through the periods of problems and struggles are not people of the same religious persuasion.

“You have said it that you are not an ethnic jingoist. I know this because I have known you for a very long time. For some of us, when these things are said, we find it painful but I hope there will be proper rendition of what you said today and it will start clearing the air.’’

Inspiring Story: Meet Tolulope Sangosanya, a woman who found life in the face of death (Documentary)

Tolulope Sangosanya is a philanthropist and the founder of the LOTS Foundation.

As a child, Tolulope Sangosanya was told that she might not live longer than the age of ten.

"My fear of dying? I left it behind in that church," Tolulope Sangosanya, a woman who found life in the face of death told Pulse TV in a documentary about her life.

She is the founder of the LOTS Charity Foundation, an organization which has positively affected the lives of 5000 children since its inception. Her interest in the well-being of others was inspired by a past of horror themed by a constant reminder that she might die at 10.

It all started for Sangosanya as a child from a traditional Yoruba home with so much belief in spiritual entities, a feature that defines the concept of being African. Her father had invited an Ifa priest into their home to conduct a "spiritual checkup", that was the beginning of a childhood nightmare for the 35-year-old woman who was told she was in a firm grip of death.

Irrespective of the counseling she sought, be it from a pastor and other figures in the business of divinity, it was still the same outcome – they all submitted the same prognosis, she might die if not fortified with an intensive spiritual protection.

A feeling of alienation by her family encouraged Sangosanya to write her father to express how lonely she felt while dealing with her circumstances.

"I just hated being alive like what exactly am I doing here? I remeber writing a letter to my dad when I was in JSS2, and I was asking him that erm, I didn't feel like a member of his family.

"Six years old before I knew that his image they recording in my head that this is your dad. Until I was six I didn't know, it was somebody else that I thought was my dad and I really love that man because that man showed me what a father was supposed to be."

In addition to her spiritual and family struggles, a young Sangosanya also experienced a reading disorder known as dyslexia.

This factor contributed to a slow learning which manifested in her child Basit who could not write the English alphabet at the age of 11.

Thanks to the intervention of his parents, he was able to improve "tremendously" on this after being withdrawn from a public school to a privately owned academic institution.

"I remember that I said earlier, I am not going to die while I am alive. I refuse to die of fear.

"In fact, every day when people are afraid of dying, I wake up and I smile – I am waiting for that day very well. I am so expectant of the day I die but I am going to die empty," Titilope Sangosanya told Pulse TV confidently while speaking of her new found energy and resolve to be useful to her society despite the premonition of death that was shared concerning her as a child.

Her childhood affliction introduced in her a desire to help challenged people, who have seen their chances of success limited due to the problems created by their environment.

Sangosanya represents a member of crop of individuals who by an act of selfless devotion, are bringing comfort to those who are not able to afford one by default.

Night Fire Razes 3 Duplexes In Gowon Estate, Lagos

Fire

Fire on Friday night gutted three duplexes on 34 Road, B Close of Gowon Estate, Federal Housing Authority (FHA), Egbada, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

NAN also reports that there was no casualty recorded in the inferno.

An eyewitness, who spoke to NAN, said that the fire was first noticed at about 7.15pm in one of the duplexes before spreading to others.

He said that an occupant in one of duplexes, who had just returned, opened the door and met the raging fire, immediately raised an alarm which attracted neighbours and sympathisers.

According to the witness, the bewildered occupant’s action quickly attracted more sympathisers’ who ran helter-skelter in assisting to put-off the fire, but their efforts were not enough.

But the arrival and efforts of a combined team of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and State Fire Service officials to the scene helped to quench the fire.

Some of the residents, who also spoke to NAN, commended the early arrival of the LASEMA personnel, saying that they got to the scene 30 minutes after being called.

“They came with five trucks, all with sufficient water that tackled the inferno before it was finally put-off,’’ the Community Development Association (CDA) Chairman, Mr Nathanel Okoro, said.

He also praised the DPO of the Gowon Estate Police Station, Mr Adeniyi Adedeji, for personally leading his team to the scene to provide security.

“Although the LASEMA official did not know the location of the fire incident if not for the assistance of the police who escorted them,’’ he said.

A LASEMA officer, who identified himself as Mr Olaolu Odufuwa, told NAN that the cause of the fire could not be ascertained immediately.

The estate had also recorded a late night inferno on Nov. 28, 2017, which gutted five of eight shops attached to a Union Bank building on 411 Road Junction.

Indian Woman Arrested For Killing Teenage Son, Burnt His Body

Indian Police

Indian police on Friday arrested a 42-year-old woman for killing her teenage son and then burnt his body and dumped the charred remains near their home in the southern state of Kerala.

The bone-chilling crime that shocked the entire country took place in Kollam, over 65 km from state capital Thiruvananthapuram, earlier this week, but came to light later only after the woman, identified as Jaya Mol, broke down during sustained interrogation by police.

Kollam’s police chief A. Sreenivas said that Mol had allegedly lost her temper during an argument with her 14-year-old son and strangled him with a dupatta in a fit of rage.

The woman went to a nearby police station along with her husband and filed a missing person’s complaint.

But cops started suspecting her after noticing several contradictions in her statement and searched the vicinity of her house only to come across the human remains.

“During interrogation, Mol confessed that she dragged his body to the rear of her compound, burnt it and threw it across the wall.

“She then dragged the body from right outside compound wall few meters away,” the police official told the media.

The woman’s husband, however, told the media that his wife is “mentally unstable.”

“But we have booked the woman for murder charges and produced her in a court which remanded her in police custody for a couple of days for further interrogation.

“We could press some other charges if necessary,” another police official said.

The woman faces a maximum of death penalty if convicted.

FADAMA Empowers 5,000 Rural Farmers In Anambra

Awka – Mr. Chuks Egbue, the Project Coordinator of FADAMA in Anambra State, has said that over 5,253 farmers benefitted from the various interventions of the FADAMA III project in 2017.

Egbueh said in an interview in Awka at a parley that 4,000 of the beneficiaries were rice farmers, while the rest were into cassava production.

According to him, the farmers were empowered in the areas of book keeping, training on land preparation, distribution of inputs like certified seedlings, cassava cuttings, fertilisers and farming kits.

Egbue said FADAMA III additional financing project in Anambra was largely successful last year.

“During the year, we were able to empower about 5, 253 rural farmers in Anambra, we gave them training and expertise.

“We also gave those inputs like certified seeds, fertilisers and chemicals at 50 percent subsidy. We also gave them farming safety kits like rain boots, gloves, kits, glove and other related items at 80 percent subsidy,” he said.

The project coordinator said that 239 youths were trained under its Graduate Unemployed Youths Scheme and qualified for take-off in February.

He said that the project embarked on 11 farm roads totaling 45 kilometres and five major irrigation projects in the state.

Tech: Tom Petty died from an accidental drug overdose involving painkiller Fentanyl

null

Fentanyl is a notoriously dangerous painkiller.

  • Singer Tom Petty died of an accidental drug overdose that included opioid painkiller Fentanyl, the medical examiner-coroner for the county of Los Angeles announced on Friday.
  • Petty passed away suddenly last October but the cause of his death had remained unclear until now.
  • The singer suffered from knee and hip problems and had been prescribed the medications for pain.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame musician Tom Petty died of an accidental drug overdose that included opioid painkiller Fentanyl, the medical examiner-coroner for the county of Los Angeles announced on Friday.

The musician had been prescribed pain medications for knee problems and a fractured hip, and was also taking a sleep aid and an antidepressant.

In October, at age 66, Petty suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu, California, and passed away shortly after. His death certificate failed to list a cause of death at the time, however, and instead simply read "deferred," pending an autopsy.

In a statement released Friday, coroner Jonathan Lucas said that Petty’s system showed signs of several opioid painkillers, including fentanyl and oxycodone.

Fentanyl is roughly 35 times stronger than heroin and is available with a prescription. It is also sold illegally and swapped into fake pills sold as brand-name painkillers like Norco, Percocet, and Xanax.

In a post shared to Petty's Facebook page on Friday evening, Petty's wife, Dana, and daughter, Adria, wrote that Petty had “many serious ailments including emphysema, knee problems and most significantly a fractured hip." Petty continued to tour despite these limitations, they said.

”We knew before the report was shared with us that he was prescribed various pain medications for a multitude of issues including Fentanyl patches," the post read, "and we feel confident that this was, as the coroner found, an unfortunate accident.”

The family also used the annoucement as an opportunity to talk about the ongoing opioid crisis. More than 63,600 Americans were killed by opioid painkillers last year — 11,200 more people than the year before that and the highest number of lives claimed by the crisis so far.

“As a family we recognize this report may spark a further discussion on the opioid crisis and we feel that it is a healthy and necessary discussion and we hope in some way this report can save lives,” the post read. “Many people who overdose begin with a legitimate injury or simply do not understand the potency and deadly nature of these medications.”

Opioid painkillers have claimed the lives of several celebrities in recent years.

Music legend Prince, who was also reported to have suffered from hip pain, died last year from a fentanyl overdose and may have unwittingly taken the drug. Pills found in his home were labeled "Watson 385," a stamp used to identify some hydrocodone-based painkillers, but tests revealed that those pills contained fentanyl instead.
