Messi, Suarez Score As Runaway Leaders Barcelona Thrash Real Betis

Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez scored a brace each as Barcelona extended their lead at the top of the Spanish La Liga table to 11 points following a 5-0 thrashing of Real Betis at the Estadio Benito Villamarin on Sunday.
Ernesto Valverde’s men went into the game on the back of their 1-0 defeat in the first leg of their Copa del Rey quater-final clash against Espanyol but gave a perfect response to the setback.
The Blaugrana are unbeaten in LaLiga this season.
Both teams struggled to create any meaningful chance in the first half with Ivan Rakitic and Lionel Messi coming close for Barcelona.
Thomas Vermaelen was withdrawn two minutes before the break due what looked like a hamstring injury with Samuel Umtiti his place.
Barcelona made the breakthrough in the 59th minute with Rakitic racing onto a through ball and slotting it into the net.
Messi added the second five minutes later with a left-foot shot after beating Betis’ offside trap.
Rakitic and Messi combined in the 69th minute with the former delivering an inviting cross for  Suarez who volleyed home to make it three.
Messi grabbed his second of the game 10 minutes from the end. Suarez played a great ball out wide to the Argentine and as they found themselves two-on-two, he cut inside, and went past both defenders before scoring.
The rout was completed a minute when Suarez tucked the ball into the net after he was teed up by Messi.

Martin Luther King: If you are Nigerian, MLK died for you too

Martin Luther King Jr. speaks to the crowd at a Civil rights rally

The legacy of the civil rights movement has affected how black people around the world are viewed.

It is safe to say nearly every black person, Nigerian, Aruban or American, knows Martin Luther King. If you do not exactly remember his work, you must know his iconic “I Have A Dream” speech which he delivered during the 1963 march on Washington.

The Baptist Pastor is the face of the black American struggle for equality till this day.

From 1954 to 1968, King emerged as the most prominent leader and speaker in the civil rights struggle that was one of the most dominant conversations and cultural movements in the world at the time, as it remains today.

Black people in America were subject to extreme institutional racism in a society that claimed to be legal but schools and buses were run with a strict principle of segregation.

Many had tried different methods in the past, but King achieved much for his people using the tactics of nonviolence and civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs and inspired by the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi.

Martin Luther King, or MLK as he is often referred to, operated with a heavily strategic method that focused on drawing attention to the problem and inciting the powers-that-be to address it.

One of such was the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott. With the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) which he helped found in 1957, he led an unsuccessful 1962 struggle against segregation in Albany, Georgia, and helped organize the nonviolent 1963 protests in Birmingham, Alabama.

In 1964, MLK was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace for combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance.

However, death made an untimely call in 1968 when King was planning a national occupation of Washington, D.C., to be called the Poor People's Campaign.

He was assassinated by James Earl Ray on April 4 in the American city of Memphis, Tennessee.

Respect the King's Legacy

These achievements are why MLK is so worshipped, especially among the black community. It is why an entire week, from January 15–19, has been tagged MLK week in celebration of the late icon’s legacy.

It begins with Martin Luther King Day, an American federal holiday marked on January 15. For most of black America though, the celebrations continue over the week.

They are marked by a series of talks and seminars in most educational and research institutions.

Bastions of the civil rights movement, such as the Reverend Jesse Jackson and members of King’s family, often speak about the minister’s legacy.

His impact is not lost on the world of art.

ALSO READ: Here are 14 facts you should know about Rosa Parks

One of such, Peter Max has painted portraits of the great civil rights leader for over 20 years, Max remembers: “Dr King was such a dynamic and visionary leader. I will never forget the power of his presence, words and peacefulness.

During his anniversary, the civil rights movement also embarks on a status update of sorts, where it comments on the conversation around black rights and how much progress has been made in combating racism in America, particularly, and the world, in general.

In this sense, it is important to note that although the good reverend fought from America, his work has affected the lives of billions of black people around the world.

Black Excellence, for America and beyond

The legacy of the civil rights movement has affected how black people around the world are viewed.

Apart from forcefully changing how black people are treated even in the own countries, it has had a massive ripple effect in countries like South Africa where those who fought against apartheid continuously referred to his work and the progress made for guidance and inspiration.

ALSO READ: This professor believes Martin Luther King Jr. has been severely whitewashed

If you’re Nigerian, MLK fought for you too.

In a rapidly globalised world, racism has crossed national borders and like the H&M ad showed, subtle imagery can target an entire demographic.

It is why the work of the civil rights movement is so important in this day and age.

The progress that has been made is enjoyed by every single black person, in how racial sensitivities are addressed in conversation, in how the rest of the world considers every person of black skin or heritage.

It shows in how we are finally recognised as our own separate entities and not a bunch of savages hoping to be led to salvation by the white man.

It has created the atmosphere for the emergence of black billionaires and empires, brands that create products specifically for black people, the idea of black excellence is built on the very ideals that MLK stood for.

We may not be able to stay at home for MLK day but his dreams have come true in certain ways ad we are all the better for it.

2019: Buhari Unworthy To Lead Nigeria Again – Atiku Group Says

Buhari

Abuja – President Muhammadu Buhari is unworthy to lead Nigeria again in his current capacity because “he has failed to lead the nation aright,” a group backing key opposition figure and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has said.

The grim verdict was passed on the President him at the weekend by a group christened as “I am Atikulated 2019”, and led by one Ike Bishop Okoronkwo.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja at the weekend, the group said that the former Vice President is the best choice for Nigeria at the next election, urging Nigerians to reject President Buhari because he had failed in his duties as President of the nation.

According to the group, there are too many instances of failure ascribable to the current government, and Nigerians should do themselves a whole lot of good by rejecting the president at the next election.

“The incessant and needless killings of innocent Nigerians by Fulani Herdsmen and other militant groups, and the inability of the present government to stop the killing or bring the perpetrators to book, the worsening joblessness among Nigerian youths, epileptic power supply amidst high tariffs.

Other reasons the group gave include “the increasing rates of kidnappings, violent crimes and cultism cases across Nigeria, the undue and unwarranted sufferings that Nigerians are currently subjected to due to scarcity of petroleum products, to mention a few, all of these are becoming unbearable for the average Nigerians.

“We wish to use this opportunity to call on all Nigerians, both at home and in the diaspora, to vehemently reject President Muhammadu Buhari and his party, the APC in Nigeria in all future elections.

“Let us put away petty sentiments and come together as one united people in the interest of our country Nigeria, to support and vote Atiku Abubakar and his party, the PDP, in the upcoming general elections, because, “patriotism” as they say, has no political party.

“We also call on all Nigerian youths and women groups, to key into the agenda of this organization so that, together, we can change this ‘fake’ change government, and enthrone Atiku Abubakar, as the next president of Nigeria,” the group said.

Okoronkwo, who read the text of the press statement, also urged PDP members, leaders and Nigerians to ensure that Abubakar emerged as the standard bearer of the party for the 2019 presidential election.

“We wish to appeal to PDP Governors, present and past party leaders, stakeholders and members of the party, and indeed all well meaning Nigerians, to support the candidacy of Abubakar.

“They should ensure that he emerges as the Standard Bearer of the PDP for the 2019 presidential election,” Okoronkwo said.

“We have looked at the profiles of those currently aspiring to contest for president on the platform of PDP in 2019.

“We have identified Abubakar, as the only one with the character and content, political will and capacity required to bring the needed transformation that Nigerians are yearning for.”

He described Abubakar as a detribalised leader and a uniting figure, a good bridge builder who bridges gap between tribes, and modest in religion.

“He relates equitably with Nigerians in business and in politics without greed or sentiment.

“He is an astute politician, entrepreneur and philanthropist. Perhaps, his philanthropy is most visible through his promotion of education at all levels, particularly higher education.”

Tech: Your burger habit could be under threat

null

New genetic engineering technique CRISPR could help create both crops and animals that are more immune to environmental challenges.

  • Producing meat is a resource-intensive and wasteful process. Pigs and cows require land to graze and crops to eat; water is used throughout the process.
  • Climate change and a growing population will turn up the heat on these resources.
  • A handful of companies are trying to solve the problem with plant-based meat, but since those products rely on grains and veggies, they'll ultimately face the same challenges.
  • Genetic engineering technique CRISPR may help solve these problems by making both plants and animals that are more immune to environmental challenges.

Making meat is wasteful work.

An ounce of beef — one-sixth of a standard burger patty — requires over 100 gallons of water. Dairy cattle, chickens, and pigs also belch out methane, a key greenhouse gas, and the factories and farms that house them add carbon dioxide to the mix. Livestock are also prone to disease. An estimated 20% of the world’s animal protein is lost to bacterial infections and illness.

A new technology may help solve these issues. CRISPR, which allows for tiny, precise tweaks to DNA that were previously considered impossible, is being used to make crops that are cheaper, more reliable, and more immune to environmental challenges like drought and pests. Experts say the first CRISPR corn and mushrooms could be on grocery shelves within two-to-eight years.

"We're not talking about the future. We're talking about right now," Stefan Jansson, a plant researcher at Umea University in Sweden, told Business Insider.

Neal Gutterson, the vice president of research and development at agricultural giant DuPont Pioneer, told Business Insider that the company’s first CRISPR-edited grain, a type of corn that will be used in products like soups and salad dressings, "will likely be the first commercial product for agriculture and potentially the first product to market for any [CRISPR] application." He expects the company to bring it to market "by the end of this decade."

Scientists are already experimenting with using the new tool to solve some of the problems presented by a more environmentally chaotic world.

Last February, Chinese researchers used CRISPR to create cows that are better protected from tuberculosis, a chronic bacterial disease that can spread to humans and has fueled the scourge of antibiotic resistance. About nine months later, another team from China used the tool to give pigs less white fat (aka lard) and more brown fat (the stuff that helps them keep warm) than normal animals. If the development were perfected and scaled up — something that would require more research — it could cut costs and make the animals better able to withstand extreme temperatures.

Around the same time, at the University of California at Davis, Alison Van Eenennaam successfully bred CRISPR cows without horns, which could one day eliminate the need for breeders to manually burn horns off so that the animals don’t hurt each other or farmers. Van Eenennaam, a professor of animal genomics, oversees multiple projects that use various new forms of gene editing to modify cattle in a way that might protect them from animal cruelty and climate change.

"Why wouldn't you want a disease-resistant animal?" she told Business Insider. “It ticks off every box there is — animal welfare, environment, economics. What else is there to say?"

Why meatless meat may not solve the problem

In the meantime, several companies are trying to solve the problem from a different angle. They want to create meat-like products — also known as plant-based meat — without any animals at all.

California-based startup Beyond Meat sells a burger made mostly from pea protein at 5,000 restaurants and in the meat aisle at some Whole Foods grocery stores; Bill Gates is among the company's investors. Impossible Foods, another California startup backed by Gates, makes another plant-based burger that's on offer at several upscale fast-casual restaurants, including Umami Burger and Momofuku.

But since these burgers rely on plants, their makers could ultimately face the same challenges that will confront farmers across the globe. As the global population rises and climate change pushes crop production down, prices and demand could rise significantly — which brings us back to CRISPR crops.

The world population of 7.6 billion could reach 11.2 billion by 2100, according to recent UN estimates. And though the world will have more mouths to feed, it will have less food to do so.

Climate change is projected to drive down crop yields by up to a quarter in some parts of the world, with important food sources like corn and wheat seeing dramatic losses. A study published by researchers at Michigan State University suggests that high temperatures not only weaken plants' natural defenses but strengthen bacterial attacks, a sort of double whammy for crop productivity.

"Agriculture must transform over the next 30 years in order for us to avoid mass famine," Charlotte Lusty, who helps manage agricultural gene banks for an international nonprofit called the Crop Trust, said at the UN Climate Change Conference in November.

Farmer-Herder Clashes: FCTA Partners NOA Towards Peace-Building

FCTA

Abuja – The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) is to partner with the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in a community-based sensitization and enlightenment campaign.

The campaign is aimed at forestalling the deadly clashes between farmers and cattle herders, currently rocking some parts of the country.

The FCT Minister, Mallam Muhammad Musa Bello made this disclosure in Abuja over the weekend in a parley with the Director-General, NOA, when the latter paid him a courtesy visit in his office.

The Minister said the administration will provide the necessary financial, logistics and manpower support.

Bello said it had become increasingly necessary for government to take pre-emptive steps to ensure that the city remains very peaceful and safe in the face of the influx of people with different characters.

FCT Minister however assured NOA DG, “We are going to give you full support on this programme. We are going to make available our facilities and establish a small group in the FCT Administration that is going to liaise with you on this. We will also give you monetary support.”

He directed the Secretaries of Social Development, Agriculture, Area Council and the Head of the FCTA Information and Communication Department to liaise with the NOA to map out the strategies for peaceful coexistence, patriotism and national unity among residents of the Territory.

Mallam Bello also solicited the support of the NOA in the campaign against such other vices as criminality, drug abuse, traffic indiscipline, indiscriminate waste disposal as well as vandalism on public infrastructure.

The Minister lamented, “At the rate which the city is growing, people come in with such bad habits as traffic indiscipline, environmental nuisance and criminality and vandalism on public assets and facilities – the streetlight infrastructure, manhole covers and other related vices.”

He said these vices would need to be eliminated to ensure the city remains of international standard.

The Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) Dr. Garba Abari, had earlier in his remarks informed the Minister of their plan to bring together local Fulani herders and farming communities in the FCT and other contiguous states to advocate common grounds that will put a stop to their frequent clashes and the resultant destruction of lives and properties.

He said the strategy is to use advocacies and community theatre under the guidance of the National Troupe, to portray the challenges and evolve solutions that would stem violence. The DG added that the agency hopes to create a framework for interpersonal peace building initiatives, working in collaboration with the support of state governments and other stakeholders.

Nigerian Teenager Obafemi Makes Southampton Debut In Tottenham Draw

Tottenham Hotspur were forced to a 1-1 draw away to Southampton at the Saint Mary’s Stadium in an English Premier League clash on Sunday.

Southampton got off to a flying start in the encounter with Davinson Sanchez scoring an own goal in the 15th minute.

The Colombian international turned a cross into his own net to hand hosts Southampton the lead.

But the celebration was shortlived three minutes later when Harry Kane restored parity for Tottenham scoring the equaliser with a header.

Kane rose higher than the Saints defence line to head home Ben Davies cross from the right flank.

The goal was his 99th English Premier League goal ever and his 21st this season.

The result means Tottenham are unbeaten in their last 12 games at Saint Mary’s Stadium while Southampton have now failed to record a win in their last 11 EPL games this season.

In the second half, Spurs came close to taking the lead through Dele Alli but his effort was saved by Michael Vorm in goal for Tottenham.

Kane, Heung Min Son all came close scoring for Spurs but their attempt was saved by Fraiser Forster.

Nigerian-born teenager Michael Obafemi was handed his Southampton debut as a substitute and he nearly marked it with the winner, not properly connecting after a cross was driven into the Spurs box with the net gaping.

At 17 years and 199 days Obafemi became Southampton’s second youngest player to appear in the Premier League after Luke Shaw.

The result moved Spurs to fifth place in the EPL table with 45 points from 24 games, three points ahead of London rivals Arsenal.

Partech Africa Fund: VC firm launches $120 million seed fund for African tech start-ups

Europe-based VC firm expands to Africa to help develop talents and businesses in the region

$850 million Europe-based VC firm Partech Ventures has launched Partech Africa, a $120 million seed fund to invest $.6m to $6.1m in promising African teams using technology to solve massive problems in emerging markets.

The Africa fund will target industries ranging from Financial Inclusion (Fintech, InsurTech, new distribution models) to online and mobile consumer services (commerce, entertainment, education, digital services), as well as mobility, supply chain services and digitization of the informal economy.

Partech Ventures announced in an official statement that the Africa fund has successfully closed $70 million in commitments so far from institutional investment partners led by International Finance Corporation (IFC) the development arm of the World Bank, European Investment Bank (EIB) and corporate partners such as telecoms giant Orange. The VC firm said it is still raising and plans to reach its $120 million mark.

Though investments in African start-ups have continued to increase over the years culminating in $195 million last year according to tech news Disrupt Africa, there still exists a gulf in seed funding for young entrepreneurs and technology up starts. According to polls gathered last year by tech news site Enterprise54 and entrepreneurship training firm Leap Africa, lack of funding ranks first on the list of challenges of entrepreneurs in Nigeria.

Commenting on the launch of Partech Africa, Chief Executive Officer of IFC, Philippe Le Houérou said: “Africa’s population is overwhelmingly young. It has lots of people with strong tech skills and innovative ideas that could improve lives. But they lack the necessary funding. We think the Partech Africa fund will make an important contribution to closing this funding gap and driving entrepreneurship and growth.”

Partech Africa opened offices in Dakar, Senegal and has begun operations seeking promising technology teams to invest in.

Two African technology veterans, Cyril Collon who held various executive positions at global mobile & internet solution companies, with a consistent focus on Africa & the Middle East, and Tidjane Dème who spent 7+ years in executive roles at Google in Africa and led YouTube’s strategy in the region, have also been appointed to manage the Africa fund.

The White House: Trump is mired in familiar crisis with shutdown

null

One year to the day after taking office with vows to bring the dysfunction of Washington to heel, President Donald Trump on Saturday found himself thrust into the most perennial of political crises

Trump had planned to spend the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, celebrating his first year in office at a soiree with friends and supporters.

Instead, he remained out of sight in the White House, where he stewed about an impasse he had been unable to prevent, according to people close to him, and held a feverish round of conversations with Republican leaders in search of a resolution.

“This is the One Year Anniversary of my Presidency and the Democrats wanted to give me a nice present,” he wrote on Twitter before dawn. By afternoon, the president’s trip had been shelved as aides contemplated with dread the potential practical and political impacts of shuttering the government.

Inside the White House, Trump, who has styled himself the ultimate deal-maker, remained remarkably disengaged from the complex process of hammering out a politically palatable deal that could provide a way out of the morass.

Senior advisers counseled him to do less, not more negotiating, arguing that the shutdown was a political problem that Democrats had created for themselves, and had to find their own way to resolve.

But Trump, a highly reactive personality who detests headlines questioning his leadership — like those that dominated cable TV throughout Saturday, during coverage of the shutdown and women’s marches throughout the country denouncing his presidency — felt stymied and wanted somehow to intervene, according to one presidential adviser.

It fell to John F. Kelly, his chief of staff, to haggle over the details with Republican leaders.

The immediate cause of the shutdown, which began at 12:01 a.m. Saturday after Senate Democrats blocked consideration of a House-passed stopgap measure, was a dispute over spending.

But it was a stalemate over immigration policy, the topic that propelled Trump’s political rise, that snarled the negotiations, as the president vacillated over what approach he should take and advisers including Kelly counseled a harder line.

Cattle Breeders Ready To Pay All Levies, Taxes To Anambra Government – Chairman

Alhaji Bello Maigari, Chairman of Amansea Cattle Market, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra, said his members were ready to contribute to the economy of the state through payment of all the levies and taxes.

Maigari who spoke on Sunday in Awka, while briefing newsmen, described the relationship between the cattle breeders and host communities in Anambra as cordial.

He said that currently, his members only pay veterinary services levy, but noted that they were in talks with officials of the state government to work out an internal revenue arrangement to be paid to the state.

“We are discussing with the state government on the revenue that our members will be paying apart from the veterinary services fee we are currently paying.

“Before now, there was lots of people collecting money from cattle sellers in the states across the country, but the Federal Government has abolished all that.

“Here in Anambra, we are about to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the state government on what we will be paying as revenue and how we will be paying it,’’ he said.

The chairman who is also the secretary of Hausa community in Anambra, said the Amansea Cattle Market had operated for about 20 years without harassment because of the good understanding that exists between the cattle sellers and the host community.

He said they understood that the land where they currently occupied belonged to a family whom they pay royalty to, and also obtain permission from communities where they graze their cows.

He said his members buy feed for their cattle instead of moving around with the cattle for grazing.

“We know that the place we are using now belongs to a family, we respect that and pay them royalty, and everyone is happy.

“At times we buy feed from the north, a bag cost N3, 000 and you need three of it to feed five cows every day,’’ he said.

Maigari thanked Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra for setting up the Cow Menace Committee, which he said had contributed greatly to achieving  peace in the state.

He said that the committee had intervened in crisis which would have degenerated to full fledged conflict with his members and different communities in the state.

He urged Obiano to help them develop the land that had been allocated to them to enable them relocate, as development was fast approaching their present market.

He said there was need to fence the place, provide security, water, and other amenities, including place of worship.

“This place is getting choked because of the development, we are appealing to Gov. Willie Obiano to help develop the land he has earmarked for us so that we can move to the place,’’ he said.
