Stakeholders Caution FG Over Approval Of Additional Frequencies, Routes To Foreign Carriers

Aviation Industry analysts have told the Federal Government not to grant additional frequencies and entry points to foreign carriers. They rather advise such airlines to form partnership with the nation’s airlines. OLUSEGUN KOIKI writes.

Stakeholders and the Nigerian scheduled local carriers are striving to survive. Their fleets have consistently deflated and recently nosedived to just 42 aircraft from over 80 in 2016.

Though, several factors are responsible for the depletion of the country’s aircraft fleet, but mostly mentioned are unfavourable operating environment, ownership syndrome and poor government policies as some of the challenges confronting the local carriers, thereby leading to avoidable close of shop of many.

However, to some players and analysts in the sector, government policies seem more pronounced among the factors responsible for early collapse of the nation’s carriers.

A government policy, which gives unhindered access to foreign carriers to land in multiple points in Nigeria and increase their frequencies without considering the local carriers, is undoubtedly having an untoward effect on the operations of ingenious airline operators who are still battling with multiple charges from government agencies.

As at the last count, no fewer than 11 of the about 30 foreign carriers operating into Nigeria land in multiple points in the country, yet, there is less than 5 per cent reciprocity to foreign cities from the country’s carriers as some of the nation’s airlines that have indicated interest to fly to single airport in some of these countries are stylishly stiffened out of their choice airports by foreign regulators and governments who insist on protecting their own carriers.

Some of the airlines with extra frequencies into Nigeria are British Airways, Air France/KLM, Ethiopian Airlines, Lufthansa, Egypt Air, Turkish Airlines, Asky Airlines, African World Airlines, Air Cote D’Ivoire Kenya Airways and others.

However, despite the obvious lopsided policy and extra capital flights out of the country due to the multiple entries and extra frequencies allotted these carriers, some of them still seek extra frequencies and entries into the country.

Recently, Mr. Samuel Lindfield, the Country Manager of Virgin Atlantic Airways in Nigeria during a chat with journalists in Lagos, announced the plan of the airline to increase its frequencies from present seven weekly to more.

Lindfield based his premises on the fact that Nigerian passengers patronised the airline on the Lagos-London route more than any other nationals during the outgone year 2017.

According to him, the ratio of percentage of Nigerians that fly with the airline was 60 per cent compared with other nationals.

Lindfield disclosed that the airline would likely seek for the review of its bilateral agreement with the Nigerian Government through the Ministry of Transport, Aviation Unit to enable it increase its frequencies weekly, so as to cope with the traffic on the Lagos-London route.

He also commended the Nigerian government and its aviation agencies for providing enabling environment for the airline and other foreign carriers to thrive in the country.

But, players in Nigeria are not comfortable with the planned request for more frequencies by Virgin Atlantic and other carriers, especially those with hostile relationships with the nation’s airlines.

Stakeholders that spoke to our correspondent cautioned the Federal Government against approval of additional frequencies to the airline.

They argued that such approval by the government would only increase capital flights out of the country by the airline without any major reciprocity from the country’s carriers.

Rather, they challenged the airline, which in November 2015 sacked its over 20 Nigerian cabin crew to form a partnership with Nigerian carriers in the local scene.

Statistics obtained by our correspondent indicated that the two British airlines were among the foreign carriers with highest number of revenues and passengers traffic in the third quarter of this year while the sole Nigerians operating into the route, Med-View Airline had less traffic.

For instance, British Airways in the third quarter of 2017 had airlifted 75,298 passengers in and out of Nigeria while its counterpart, Virgin Atlantic ferried 50,320 passengers within the period, totaling 125,618 passengers within the period.

However, the only Nigerian carrier flying the long haul route, Med-View Airline airlifted a paltry 18,870 passengers on the London and other of its international and regional routes within the same period.

Two carriers from United Kingdom, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic Airways currently operate 21 frequencies into and out of Nigeria weekly on the route while the sole Nigerian carrier operating the route has just four frequencies weekly and given Gatwick Airport instead of London Heathrow International Airport, which is the preferred airport for Nigerians.

Commenting on the development, Mr. Olayinka Abioye, the General Secretary, National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), said that approval of more frequencies to Virgin Atlantic would not augur well for the country’s economy.

Abioye also queried the benefit of the airline to the country since it commenced operations into the country almost two decades, stressing that while the Nigerian Government gives foreign carriers the leverage to expand, Nigerian carriers flying to international routes are usually constraints by foreign governments.

He recalled that the airline in last quarter of 2015 sacked over 20 Nigerian cabin crew members, other Nigerian staff without accruing severance packages to the affected workers and also relocated its Nigerian call centre to other country.

Till date, no Nigerian cabin crew or cockpit crew is on the payroll of the airline that has highest number of travelling public on the continent from Nigeria.

He insisted that so far, there is no major reciprocity from the Nigerian carriers to the United Kingdom, stressing that the four frequencies weekly by Med-View Airline could not be compared to the current 21 from the two British carriers.

Abioye declared that rather than grant additional frequencies to Virgin Atlantic, the government should review the multiple frequencies allotted to foreign carriers, maintaining that most of the agreements had no economic benefit for Nigeria.

He added: “There are some of the foreign carriers that are just flying without any monetary benefit to the government and the attention of the government has been drawn to some of these irregularities. We are hoping that by this year, some of these would be reviewed and Nigerian carrier will get the benefit of some of these frequencies that have been given to some of these foreign carriers.

“Ordinarily, there should be some form of reciprocity in this movement. The argument has been that we don’t have our airlines on the international routes, but the few ones that are available, how well have they been taken care of and allowed to operate in the countries they fly into like their foreign counterparts that operate into Nigeria?

“Let’s wait for this year because there are several questions that we will be asking the government and the airline. Of what benefit is the operation of Virgin Atlantic Airways to Nigeria? I recalled that in 2016, we had to take them to the Ministry of Labour and Productivity over the disgraceful manner they disengaged some Nigerian cabin crew.

“There are questions we will be asking ourselves very soon. It is the same set of people that will be saying Nigeria is not conducive for business and will still come in here to do business.”

Also, Mr. Chuks Amokwu, another aviation analyst, urged the government to disregard the call for additional frequencies by Virgin Atlantic.

Amokwu, like others, said that such approval would lead to capital flight out of Nigeria, expressing that since the commencement of direct flight operations into the country by the airline, Nigerians working with it had consistently been relegated to the background and also recalled the sacking of over 20 cabin crew from Nigeria without a replacement till date.

But, Mr. Olumide Ohunayo, the Executive Director, Research, Zenith Travels, said that the extra frequencies for the airline would give air travellers more options on the route while airfare would also crash.

Ohunayo, however, noted that this would have negative impact on the country’s economy as revenue loss to foreign carriers would increase.

“But, we are still losing revenues to the foreign airlines because at the end of the day, whatever revenue that is generated by Virgin will be taken out of the country and thereby weaken our participation.

“Rather than giving foreign airlines more frequencies, we must be able to build credible airlines that these foreign carriers will partner with. But, before the foreign carriers can do this, we need to build a standard that will be in tune with international standards.”

Finance: Tesla just locked in Elon Musk as CEO with a $70 billion pay package (TSLA)

null

The pay package eliminates production targets for the CEO.

  • Elon Musk is the eccentric founder of Tesla, and will likely remain CEO for the next 10 years, as is required to claim the full $70 billion in pay from a new compensation package.
  • The pay package eliminates production targets for the CEO.
  • Tesla's stock is jumping on the news.

Shares of Tesla are up 2.82% to $361.47 on Tuesday after the company announced a new executive compensation plan for its CEO, Elon Musk.

The new plan eliminates vehicle production targets and focuses Musk's compensation on stock, earnings, and revenue targets instead. The plan also requires Musk to be either CEO, or both Executive Chairman and Chief Product Officer, with all management reporting to him.

Musk founded the company in 2003, and has grown Tesla to its current $58 billion market cap. He's been able to help the company weather criticism it's faced after missing nearly every self-imposed production deadline, often by announcing new projects that shift focus away from the tough problems the company faces. Most recently, Musk announced a new Semi and Roadster model, while Tesla struggled to clear a bottleneck in its Model 3 battery production.

By tying executive compensation to the company's financial performance, Musk is somewhat encouraged to continue announcing flashy new projects that drive hype and excitement around the company. To be fair, more revenue and better earnings won't come from hype alone, but the hard production targets Tesla has struggled with are no longer part of the equation.

The company is currently working to meet its own production targets for its Model 3 and has had to push its 5,000 cars a week target back by a quarter.

Adam Jonas, an analyst at Morgan Stanley, wrote in a note to clients Tuesday morning that Musk's new compensation plan could net the CEO around $70 billion in pay if he hits all his new targets.

Tesla told Markets Insider that the total compensation will likely be closer to $55.8 billion, as stock dilutions from regular employee compensation, acquisitions, and raising capital would all lessen the total value of Musk's shares.

Jonas said that Tesla is entering an era where new competition in the electric and self-driving car space will challenge its ability to leverage its monopoly position in the market for stock growth. Tesla is fast approaching a "new and unprecedented era in the battle for capital and human talent," according to Jonas.

Jonas is neutral on Tesla and has a price target of $379.00, which is 6% higher than the company's current price.

Politics: Trump's potentially trillion-dollar infrastructure plan has reportedly leaked — here's what it says

donald trump truck point

The plan does not cite any specific dollar amounts, but it details how 97% of the money will be spent on various programs to improve the US's infrastructure.

  • President Donald Trump touted fixing America's crumbling infrastructure on the campaign trail.
  • Axios apparently got a copy of his six-page infrastructure plan.

President Donald Trump's potentially trillion-dollar infrastructure plan has leaked, according to Axios, which provided the six-page document on its website.

Though the plan does not cite any specific dollar amounts, it details how 97.05% of the money would be spent on various programs to improve the US's lagging infrastructure.

Exactly half of the money appropriated for the bill will go to the Infrastructure Incentives Initiative, which "encourages state, local and private investment in core infrastructure by providing incentives in the form of grants" which can cover up to 20% of the project's costs, according to the document.

A quarter of the money would go to improving infrastructure in rural areas by incentivizing investment in transportation or utilities like water treatment and broadband.

Ten percent of the money has been set aside for "exploratory and ground-breaking ideas that have more risk than standard infrastructure projects but offer a larger reward profile," wherein the government would offer to pay 80% of capital construction costs, 30% of trials to demonstrate the technology, and 50% of post-demonstration planning costs.

Largely built decades ago, US infrastructure is falling apart. One-third of roads are in poor condition, 56,000 of the 612,000 bridges are structurally deficient, and 14,000 of the 83,000 dams in the US have "high hazard potential." Experts estimate it will cost roughly $1 trillion to fix.

A White House spokeswoman told Axios she wouldn't comment on the document, and that the administration would present its plan in the "near future."

Politics: 7.5 million Nigerians were unemployed in 2017 shows NBS

The unemployment rate in Nigeria is rising daily.

7.5 million Nigerians spent 2017 doing absolutely nothing at all due to unemployment.

On Sunday, January 21, 2018, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) stated in a report called "Labour Force Statistics Vol. 2: Employment by Sector Report" that 7.5 million Nigerians were unemployed between January 2016 and December 2017.

The NBS stated that out of the country’s labor population of 85.1 million, 77.55 million are engaged in some sort of economic activity for at least an hour a week. While about 7.53 million were doing absolutely nothing.

"A total of 19.72 million were working for pay or wage, which was equivalent to 25.42% of the total workers in 2017 Q3. Paid apprentices and unpaid house workers constituted 7.30% and 1.11% of the total working force engaged for at last one hour a week."

The NBS also reported that among the 77.55 million labor population who were engaged in some extent of economic activity, 29.66 million were self-employed engaged in farming/agriculture, and 21.66 million were self-employed in non- farming/agriculture sectors.

Read Also: The government created 8 million blue collar jobs in 3 years- Ngige

"The absolute number of male full-time workers was more than twice the number of female full-time workers in the third quarter of 2017. A larger percentage of males to females was self-employed in farming/agriculture work, while a larger percentage of females were self-employed in non-farming/agriculture work. Agriculture dominated both female and male labor markets."

It also stated further that more than half of the total workers in Nigeria (51.06 million or 65.84% of total) worked full-time, or 40 hours per week.

It added that Mining and Quarrying, Information and Communication, and Real Estate contributed to sizable shares of nominal GDP (11.17%, 8.69%, and 7.52% respectively) in 2017 Q3, while they only provided limited employment (0.17%, 0.55%, and 0.09% respectively).

The bureau stated further that males worked full-time than female, while a higher percentage of female worked part-time between 20-39 hours and below 20 hours per week.

Wenger Confirms Arsenal Interest In Aubameyang; Opens Up On Mkhtaryan, Sanchez Swap

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Arsenal are interested in signing Borussia Dortmund’s Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang but stated that no final decision has been made.
Arsenal are looking to make Aubameyang their second signing following the acquisition of Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Manchester United with Alexis Sanchez going the other way.
Wenger was speaking at Tuesday’s press conference ahead of Arsenal’s Carabao Cup second leg semi-final clash against Chelsea on Wednesday.
“Confident or not confident, I don’t know,” Wenger said.
“We are not close to a deal for Aubameyang with Dortmund or anybody else.
“He is one of our possible movements but there are others. The final decision is not made.
“You look at players, what can they give to the team. Good players can always play together.”
Wenger expressed delight that Arsenal were able to get a world class player in Mkhitaryan following Sanchez’s departure to United.
“I believe we lose a world class player and gain a world class player,” he added.
“How efficient will that work? It will be down to the qualities of both players.
“Mkhitaryan has the qualities to integrate into our game. He has a good team attitude. He’s very versatile.
“They [Mesut Ozil and Mkhtaryan] can play together.
“He can play in all kinds of positions. He is very versatile and it should help us going forward. He can bring quality of creativity, technical stability and experience.
“I have no doubt about his attitude.
“He suffered a bit with the competition he had there [United].
“I will know how much [it affected his confidence] over the next few weeks.
“That his challenge and my challenge to get that out here.”
He said how Mkhitaryan performs in training will determine whether he will go straight into the first team.
“It depends on the team’s performance. His performance in training as well.”
Commenting on Sanchez’s move, Wenger reiterated that the former Barcelona star went for money.
“[Sanchez] goes to a great club and has a great contract. He is 29 years old, it is maybe his last contract. Financially it’s important. He could combine both. He’s going to a great club.”
The French coach dismissed talks about Arsenal being a selling club, saying it does not bother him.
“No, I’m not worried about that.
“When players get to a certain age and want to go you have to respect that.”
On the Cup tie against Chelsea, Wenger said: “We want to go to the final, the two teams know each other very well. The second leg will be more open. It should be much more spectacular than the first one.”
And on the injury front, Wenger ruled disclosed that Aaron Ramsey could be back from injury but ruled out Nacho Monreal, Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck.
“We might have Ramsey back in the squad.
“He has a test today.
“We have uncertainty about Nacho Monreal.
“Giroud and Welbeck are a fraction short.”

Politics: An FBI official booted from the Russia investigation over anti-Trump texts exchanged more than 50,000 messages with an FBI lawyer

Jeff Sessions

The revelation comes on the same day it was revealed that the FBI failed to preserve five months worth of text messages between the two former FBI officials.

  • Peter Strzok, the FBI official ousted from the Russia probe, exchanged more than 50,000 text messages with FBI lawyer Lisa Page during and after the 2016 election.
  • Attorney General Jeff Sessions made that announcement on Monday after it was revealed that the FBI failed to preserve five months worth of text messages between Strzok and Page.
  • Strzok — who played critical roles in both the Clinton email probe and the Russia investigation — and Page have been vilified for being critical of Donald Trump in their months-long text-message chain.
  • Strzok has since been removed from the Russia probe, but Trump allies in Congress and in the media have sought to frame the controversy as evidence that the Russia probe is politically biased against Trump.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced on Monday that Peter Strzok, the FBI official ousted from the Russia probe over anti-Trump text messages he exchanged with FBI lawyer Lisa Page had exchanged text messages with Page more than 50,000 times.

Sessions said in a statement provided to Fox News that the matter is being investigated in light of earlier revelations that the FBI failed to preserve five months worth of text messages shared between Strzok and Page.

"We will leave no stone unturned to confirm with certainty why these text messages are now not available to be produced and will use every technology available to determine whether the missing messages are recoverable from another source," Sessions, who recused himself from the Russia investigation, said on Monday.

Strzok and Page have been the focus of fierce condemnation from Trump's allies in Congress and in the media, who have sought to frame the Russia investigation as politically biased against the president.

The matter has prompted calls for a second special counsel to investigate potential bias against Trump among the prosecutors participating in the probe of Russia's US-election interference being led by special counsel Robert Mueller.

Mueller, who is a registered Republican, was quick to remove Strzok from the Russia investigation, but has nonetheless faced blistering rebukes from Trump's allies, many of whom have, at turns, called for Mueller's firing and floated the idea of purging the FBI of agents suspected of opposing Trump.

House representatives Bob Goodlatte of Virginia, Trey Gowdy of South Carolina, and Devin Nunes of California raised alarms about the developments in a statement that read in part: "The contents of these text messages between top FBI officials are extremely troubling in terms of when certain key decisions were made by the Department of Justice and the FBI, by whom these decisions were made, and the evident bias by those in charge of the investigation."

"Rather than clearing up prior FBI and DOJ actions, these recently produced documents cause us to further question the credibility and objectivity of certain officials at the FBI," the statement read.

Experts have scoffed at such public questioning of the FBI's credibility, Business Insider's Sonam Sheth reported earlier Monday.

Those experts pointed out that the Strzok-Page text messages don't change the facts and evidence already produced in the Russia probe, which seeks to shed light on interference from Moscow in the 2016 US election and determine whether the Trump campaign cooperated with Russia.

Politics: An FBI official booted from the Russia investigation over anti-Trump texts exchanged more than 50,000 messages with an FBI lawyer

Emirates Orders More A380s, Securing Production

Emirates has agreed to buy up to 36 Airbus A380s in a provisional order that would keep the world’s largest passenger jet in production for a further 10 years.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Emirates signed with Airbus is for 20 A380s and an option for 16 more.

The 20 aircraft order is worth just over $8.9bn at 2018 list prices. If the options are converted, the deal would be worth $16bn.

“We’ve made no secret of the fact that the A380 has been a success for Emirates. Our customers love it, and we’ve been able to deploy it on different missions across our network, giving us flexibility in terms of range and passenger mix,” Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the airline’s Chief Executive said.

Emirates said it would use part of the new order for expansion and part to replace older aircraft as deliveries would start in 2020.

The Dubai-based airline has not selected an engine manufacturer yet, but has both Engine Alliance and Rolls-Royce-powered A380s in its fleet.

The order would allow Airbus to keep the A380 production line open until 2018, while it seeks orders from other airlines.

John Leahy, Airbus Chief Salesman said: “This new order underscores Airbus’s commitment to produce the A380 at least for another 10 years. I’m personally convinced more orders will follow Emirates’ example and that this great aircraft will be built well into the 2030s.”

Leahy said recently that A380 production would have to be wound down if Emirates failed to order more aircraft. An order was originally expected at the Dubai Airshow in November, but that failed to happen and the two companies have been in extended negotiations since then.

Emirates is the largest A380 operator with 142 ordered prior to the new agreement, and 101 currently in service.

Tech: Many consumers are skeptical about Amazon Go — first-day lines aside (AMZN)

BI Graphics_01.22.2018_Tech_CoD Tech Chart of the Day

Many consumers lined up to shop at Amazon's new cashier-less store in Seattle. But on the whole, consumers are skeptical of the concept.

Amazon Go could be model for future retail stores. The new convenience store concept from e-commerce giant Amazon relies on cameras and sensors to detect when you enter and leave and what items you grab from shelves. Instead of checking out, you get automatically billed for items as you pass through a special turnstile when you exit the store. Thanks to those features, Amazon is promising that customers will be able to get in and out much more quickly than at a traditional outlet.

The folks who lined up outside the first Amazon Go store on Monday in Seattle were obviously excited to take a step into the future of shopping. But consumers as a whole were much more skeptical about the whole idea not too long ago, as we can see in this chart from Statista, which is based on survey data from YouGov. Something that Amazon may want to keep an eye on: Few consumers were willing to pay more for the convenience Amazon Go promises.

Strategy: The CEO behind Victoria's Secret is slamming Trump while ignoring a huge flaw in his own business

The Victoria's Secret runway show has been criticized for its lack of diversity.

Victoria's Secret has a big diversity problem.

  • CEO of Victoria's Secret slammed President Trump in a public video, claiming his comments on immigration were "not acceptable."
  • Victoria's Secrets has frequently been criticized for not being diverse.
  • The CEO's comments show his lack of awareness of the brand's image.

Victoria's Secret has a huge problem with diversity, but its CEO won't acknowledge it.

This month, billionaire businessman Les Wexner publically slammed Trump online after his controversial comments on immigration.

During a meeting with a bipartisan group of lawmakers, who were seeking to resolve The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that protects young unauthorized immigrants from deportation and is being phased out by the Trump administration, the President said: "Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?"

"This is not acceptable," Wexner said in response.

This is the second time that Wexner has spoken out against the President. In August, he criticised Trump's comments after a woman was killed by a white supremacist during a racially-charged rally in Charlottesville.

His thoughts this month echoed this: "Hearing the remarks of yesterday, I repeat that this is not acceptable."

While Wexner has been applauded for standing up for equality and diversity against Trump, he has failed to demonstrate this in own business.

Victoria's Secret has frequently been criticized for the lack of diversity in its ad campaigns and runway shows, which feature rail-thin models. In November 2017, around the time of its annual show, plus-size model Ashley Graham posted a doctored Instagram of herself with a sarcastic comment which said: “Got my wings!” Despite this outcry online, the brand has failed to cater to plus-size customers.

And to its detriment, the store was once the kingpin of the US lingerie market but in recent years has lost market share to more body positive brands.

In the past year, Victoria's Secret has seen negative same-store sales growth. Meanwhile, Aerie, which promotes natural beauty and self-acceptance in its ad campaigns, has seen 11 consecutive quarters of same-store sales growth.
