Entertainment: Olympic curlers are buff now, and have the calendars to prove it

null

GANGNEUNG, South Korea — Thomas Ulsrud lifts weights, hammers through squats and hangs upside down from metal bars, molding his abdominal muscles with a sadistic series of crunches.

“I guess I was blessed a little from nature’s side,” Ulsrud said, “but I do like to work out.”

None of this would be all that unusual except that Ulsrud is a 46-year-old curler.

Obliterating the sport’s tired reputation as ground zero for paunchy, beer-swilling weekend warriors, curlers like Ulsrud, who is back at the Olympics for the third time with Norway, are representative of a growing emphasis on fitness — for men and women alike. They bench press, bang out bicep curls and lay off the sauce.

Some, like Ulsrud and Marc Kennedy, a Canadian Olympian, have gone so far as to showcase their physiques in racy promotional calendars for the sport.

“It kind of goes to show you just how far curling has come,” said Kennedy, 36, who posed shirtless while doing yoga with two curling stones for the cover of the 2018 Men of Curling Calendar.

Brian McWilliams, head trainer for USA Curling, said that when he joined the organization in 2006, he discovered that he was responsible for conditioning players who were still smoking cigarettes during fifth-end breaks, which is the equivalent of halftime.

“I was like, ‘What did I just get myself into?'” McWilliams said.

But curling, the sport that involves using brooms to direct a heavy granite rock down a sheet of ice, has joined the CrossFit age. Phill Drobnick, coach of the U.S. men, said he suspected that this was the first Olympics in which every team in the field had bought into a fitness program in the run-up to the games.

“In the past, if you were a good shotmaker, you could be pretty good and still be successful,” said Aileen Geving, who plays for the U.S. women’s team. “But the game has gotten so precise: The ice is better, and the players have gotten better. Any bit of edge is going to make a difference. So if fitness is that difference, you’re going to work for it.”

Joanne Courtney, 28, who is competing for Canada and has a reputation as one of the strongest sweepers in the world, has worked with a trainer in Edmonton to add muscle mass to her upper body. The more weight she has over the broom, she said, the more downward pressure she can apply to the ice.

She also does interval training — on treadmills and rowing machines — to hone her anaerobic fitness and her explosiveness. She does the bulk of her training in the summer.

“That’s where I try to build as much muscle as I possibly can,” she said.

Sweeping is important because it heats the ice while creating micro-scratches on the surface, which helps players control for distance and trajectory as the rock travels down the sheet.

As for Ulsrud, he said he began to focus on weight training in his mid-30s as a way of sustaining his career. He guided the Norwegians to the silver medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics and to a world championship in 2014. Ulsrud now makes it a point, he said, to outperform his younger teammates in their various conditioning tests.

The sport clearly has changed.

“It used to be older people, drinking beer all night,” Ulsrud said. “And those were the best players! You’d meet them at the bar.”

About that calendar: It features elite curlers in various states of undress — including Ulsrud, who posed in his underwear with his teammates for the month of December.

The photo shoot was on the second floor of a busy restaurant in Oslo. The lunchtime crowd was riveted.

“A lot of people were like, ‘Hey, if we have a dinner party, can you guys come over and serve?'” Ulsrud said.

The calendar is the work of George Karrys, owner and publisher of the Curling News, an industry bible based in Toronto. Karrys said he had nearly sold out of the 10,000 copies he had printed, with the net proceeds going to various charities. This is the second edition. Bowing to public demand after he had published several calendars featuring female curlers, Karrys came out with the first Men of Curling Calendar in 2014. (Ulsrud was in that one, too.)

“It was pretty explosive,” said Karrys, a former Olympic curler for Canada.

Karrys lets the curlers follow through on their own artistic visions. For the latest calendar, Ulsrud and his three teammates chose a holiday dinner tableau, with Havard Vad Petersson posing like a roasted pig with an apple in his mouth.

“He drew the short straw,” Ulsrud said.

The target audience is no secret.

“You get a lot of the older ladies up in Alberta or Saskatchewan who are just going to buy those things up,” said John Landsteiner, a member of the U.S. men’s team.

Neither Landsteiner nor any of his U.S. teammates are featured in the calendar — “We’re not exactly the beefcakes,” said John Shuster, a four-time Olympian and the team’s leader — but they were no less focused on making gains (or losses, as the case may be) in the weight room before the games.

After Shuster labored to a last-place finish alongside his teammates at the 2014 Winter Olympics, he made big changes. He worked on his conditioning, refined his diet and dropped about 35 pounds. As a result, he said, he has more energy, no longer feels jet lag after long flights and can power through tournaments.

Known as the skip, Shuster orchestrates the game plan and throws the most important shots, leaving most of the sweeping duties to his teammates. But at the U.S. mixed doubles trials in December, Schuster had to sweep — and sweep a lot, grinding through 10 matches over five days with his partner, Cory Christensen.

“I couldn’t have done that four years ago,” Shuster said.

When Karrys won a silver medal with the Canadian men’s team at the 1998 Winter Olympics, curling was making its debut at the Olympics. Karrys, who played alongside an electrician, a plumber and a golf pro, said he was the only member of his team who worked out.

“I knew there would be comparisons between curlers and real athletes from these other Olympic sports,” Karrys said in a telephone interview. “So I wanted to not only be able to perform to the best of my ability and help my team out, but I also wanted to not look terrible while I was doing it.”

In the 20 years since, curling has benefited from a slow but steady influx of funding from sponsors and national federations — and from greater exposure, too. Those who hope to reach the highest levels face more competition than ever. Many still have day jobs, but they also have high-performance coaches and regimented training schedules.

For the curlers vying for medals here in Gangneung, the Olympics are a marathon that demand endurance. Pool play for the men’s and women’s events stretches over eight days, with each team playing nine matches — and then tiebreakers, semifinals and medal rounds to follow.

“You need to be as fit as possible so that you can approach that very last stone to win the championship the same way that you did several days earlier, with the first stone of the competition,” Karrys said. “And if you’re physically dragging, everything drags — all the strategic aspects, all the actual execution of throwing the stone.”

Now, more than ever, a lot of that hard work happens in advance, at gyms far from the ice.

“You’ve got to take care of the body,” Ulsrud said, “like all the sports.”

2018 UTME: JAMB to conduct Mock test Feb 26

JAMB ends sales of exam forms today

The board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Sunday said the much anticipated conduct of the 2018 Mock Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) would now hold on Feb. 26.

The board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

According to him, a total of 245,753 of the  1,652,795 candidates that registered for this year’s  UTME are expected to write the test.

We are happy to announce to the public that the board has concluded arrangement for the conduct of the mock UTME, slated for Monday, February 26

“This is irrespective of the ongoing strike embarked upon by members of non-academic  unions of federal universities nation wide.

“Candidates will soon be informed on when to print notifications for the examination and in addition, notifications will be sent through e-mails and text messages on the schedules of their examination,” Benjamin said.

He explained that the examination was expected to be hitch free because the board had successfully reduced incidences of malfunctioning of computers by electronically integrating the systems to see their functionality and effectiveness through link tests.

“What this means is that, at the end if the exercise, whatever system that is not seen will not be used for the mock examination.

“The 2018 exercise sold a total of 1, 966,918 candidate generating profiles.

“In previous examinations this number of candidates would have paid for the forms but through our efficient and effective system of ensuring that candidates do not waste resources, we decided to introduce the profile generating regime.

“By this method, candidates will first have to   generate personal  profiles before proceeding to obtain pins, in between which they are open to deciding whether to go ahead to pay for the registration documents or otherwise,” Benjamin explained.

NAN reports that the main UTME is expected to hold nationwide from March 9 to March 17

Lai Mohammed: No imminent war, crisis in Nigeria – Minister

PDP, looters planning to rubbish Buhari’s achievements - Lai Mohammed

Mohammed said that contrary to negative narratives being read in the social media and the internet, there was absolutely no cause for alarm in Nigeria.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed says there is no imminent war or crisis in Nigeria and the country is in competent hands under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Minister stated this during an interactive session with a cross section of Nigerian community and members of staff of the Nigerian Embassy in Madrid, Spain.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Minister is in Madrid for the signing of Agreement between Nigeria and the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) on the hosting of Conference of UNWTO Commission for Africa.

The Conference of the African Ministers of Tourism and global tourism players with the theme “Tourism Statistics, a Catalyst for Development” is scheduled for June 4 to June 6 in Abuja.

Mohammed said that contrary to negative narratives being read in the social media and the internet, there was “absolutely no cause for alarm and the nation is not in any form of imminent war”.

He said, specifically, that the challenge of herders and farmers clashes in the country was neither ethnic nor religious but as a result of global environmental and economic realities.

Mohammed stressed that the development was not new to the country and the government was committed to addressing the challenge.

He said some people were, however, for their personal agenda and gains, trying to bring in religious and ethnic sentiments to what was happening.

“Do not be surprised that the naysayers have invested billions of Naira to promote instability, ethic wrangling and misunderstanding.

“But I want you to put your minds at rest that there is no war in Nigeria, there is no imminent  war, there is no ethnic battle or religious conflict

“The Nigeria I left behind is a country where people, irrespective of where they come from, live together in harmony and government is alive to its responsibilities.

“We are not saying that there are no problems at all in Nigeria, there is no country where there is no problem including Spain here.

“A couple of month ago, we know that separatism raised its ugly head here in Spain and the whole world watched the development.

“There is nothing new happening in our country, it is a reflection of our plural values and we will continue to address them,” he said.

Mohammed said that the Administration was on the right path delivering on its electoral promises especially in revamping the economy, tackling insecurity and fighting corruption.

He said that in assessing the performance of the Administration people should do so in the context of what it inherited in 2015 and where the country is now.

“Today our foreign reserves has gone up from 24 billion dollars to 42 billion dollars and this is the highest level in the last four years.

“Inflation has been brought down in the last months.

“Before we came, Treasury Single Account (TSA) was not implemenred and people put money in different accounts, we were losing about N108 billion to bank charges

“Today, I am glad to say that with the implementation of TSA, we save monthly N24 billion from charges and about N120 billion from ghost workers,” he said.

The Minister said that because of the discipline of the administration, it got the country out of recession and the Nigeria stock market had been adjudged one of the best performing in the world.

The minister  disclosed that as at December last year, the Federal Government has given about N1.9 trillion as bail out to states.

He said many of the states had been so poorly managed that they could not pay the salaries of their workers which necessitated the intervention of the federal government.

The Minister told the meeting that the Administration’ agricultural revolution is moving Nigeria close to self-sufficiency in many staples, especially rice.

He said the Home-Grown School Feeding Programme had created jobs for 61,352 cooks, and it is providing 6.4million school children in 33,981 schools across 20 states with one meal a day.

Mohammed said the administration inherited power generation of 2690 MW even when over 16 billion dollar had been spent on power reforms.

He said with the efforts of the government, power generation has increased to 7,000 megawatts and the dministration’s is embarking on a massive infrastructural renewal.

Mohammed said that Boko Haram had been massively degraded and the suicide attacks by the hitherto emboldened group were act of defeat and cowardice.

He said the group leader, Abubakar Shekau had to disguise as a woman to escape when the heat was too much for him from the military in Sambisa.

Fielding questions from the audience, the Minister assured that the government would address issues of Diaspora voting, illegal deportation of Nigerians among others.

The host of the event and the new Nigeria Ambassador to Spain, Mrs Susan Folarin thanked the Minister and his entourage for the visit and holding the interactive session.

John Oyegun: 34,826 PDP members join APC in Niger

APC not involved in appointment of dead board members - Oyegun

Among the defectors are the state Deputy Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Aminu Yusuf, former Speaker of the state Assembly, Alhaji Adamu Usman, a former Attorney General, Alhaji Abdullahi Wuse among others.

Chief John Oyegun, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC),  on Saturday received 34,826 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Niger, who moved to APC.

Among the defectors are the state Deputy Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Aminu Yusuf, former Speaker of the state Assembly, Alhaji Adamu Usman, a former Attorney General, Alhaji Abdullahi Wuse among others.

Oyegun said in Minna at a rally to receive the defectors that Nigerians must shun sentiment and support the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari to set the nation on a new path of growth and progress.

He said that the country require “people of principle’’ to help fight for the success of the programmes of the APC.

APC needs sincere soldiers as leaders, people who are ready to join the fight, because God entrusted Buhari to us to salvage the nation and its economy,” he said.

He therefore urged the new APC members to support President Buhari in the efforts to restore the economy through the revitalisation of agriculture and solid minerals sectors.

Oyegun noted that already, government support to agriculture had helped to drastically bring down rice importation.

The APC national chairman stressed that the Buhari administration had also raised power generation to 7,000 megawatts and that the figure would go up by 50 percent after the completion of the Mambila hydro power project.

He noted that the increase in power supply would help boost industrialisation and job creation in the country.

Alhaji Aminu Yusuf, PDP state Deputy Chairman, said they joined the APC to assist in developing the state.

By the time elections are over, you don’t talk about parties anymore, instead you talk about development of the state.

“The party approached me to come and join them and assist the government build the state. We are coming with our skills and experience to assist the government in developing the state,” he said.

Tech: Snap CEO Evan Spiegel sold $50 million in Snap stock — his first sale since the IPO (SNAP)

Evan Spiegel and Miranda Kerr

The Snap CEO is worth $4.5 billion.

  • Snap CEO Evan Spiegel sold $50 million in Snap stock.
  • It's his first stock sale since Snap's IPO.

Snap CEO Evan Spiegel sold 2,675,600 shares of Snap last week at a price of $18.71 per share, a transaction netting him just over $50 million.

The transaction was disclosed in a filing with the SEC, which you can read here.

It's Spiegel's first official public stock sale since Snap's IPO last March. He previously promised not to sell any of his stock during 2017.

The sale was conducted according to a pre-arranged sales plan, and was only 1% of his holdings. He still retains control of the company and its primary product, Snapchat, as does his co-founder Bobby Murphy.

Spiegel's fortune is worth roughly $4.5 billion.

Earlier this week, he defended Snapchat's recent controversial redesign at a conference in San Francisco.

"We'd been thinking about the redesign for a really long time because we were frustrated that when you looked at the [app], both sides looked the same," Spiegel said. "We're excited about what we're seeing so far. Even the complaints we're seeing reinforce the philosophy. The frustrations we're seeing really validate those changes."

Politics: 'To every politician who is taking donations from the NRA, shame on you': Survivors of the Florida school shooting rage against gun lobby

Alessandra Mondolfi yells, “No more" during a protest against guns on the steps of the Broward County Federal courthouse in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on February 17, 2018.

Wednesday's deadly shooting at a high school in Florida has sparked protests in support of stricter gun control in several cities across the US.

  • Wednesday's deadly shooting at a high school in Florida sparked a nationwide uproar against lax gun-control regulations.
  • Survivors of the Florida shooting and activists demanded a range of measures, including a ban on assault weapons like the AR-15, which was used in the Florida shooting.
  • A nationwide student walkout against gun violence is planned for next week as gun-control advocates call on Congress to do more.

Survivors of the Florida school shooting lashed out at lawmakers, gun advocates, and even President Donald Trump on Saturday at a fiery rally demanding immediate gun-control measures in the wake of Wednesday's massacre.

Hundreds of people gathered in Fort Lauderdale to mourn the 17 lives lost in nearby Parkland and demand Congress to do more to prevent future mass shootings.

"No more guns! No more guns!" the crowd chanted.

Students, teachers, and local officials took turns giving impassioned speeches before the crowd, simultaneously celebrating those who died and blasting inaction from lawmakers in Washington.

One of the Florida shooting survivors, Emma Gonzalez, a Stoneman Douglas student, excoriated Trump and the National Rifle Association.

"If the president wants to come up to me and tell me to my face that it was a terrible tragedy and how it should never have happened and maintain telling us how nothing is going to be done about it, I’m going to happily ask him how much money he received from the National Rifle Association," Gonzalez said. "But, hey, you wanna know something? It doesn't matter because I already know: $30 million."

Gonzalez also slammed Trump for a recent tweet that some perceived as placing blame on former classmates of suspected gunman Nikolas Cruz for not contacting authorities. She demanded Trump explain how much he believed America's gunshot victims were worth.

"If you don't do anything to prevent this from continuing to occur, that number of gunshot victims will go up and the number that they are worth will go down. And we will be worthless to you," she said. "To every politician who is taking donations from the NRA, shame on you."

Demanding action

Gonzalez has been far from the only student at Stoneman Douglas speaking out against gun violence. David Hogg, a senior at the school, has been particularly vocal.

"Some of our policymakers and some people need to look in the mirror and take some action because ideas are great, but without action, ideas stay ideas and children die," Hogg said on CNN Thursday.

Rep. Ted Deutch, a Democrat who serves Florida's 22nd congressional district, also attended the rally and said the House of Representatives will propose legislation next week that would ban semi-automatic assault rifles, like the one used in Wednesday's shooting.

Deutch implored students at Stoneman Douglas and others throughout the country to continue speaking out.

"It is just not acceptable to ever think that it should be commonplace in our country for people to send their kids to school in the morning and not know if they’re going to come home at the end of the day," Deutch said.

He also laid out four other measures for Congress to consider: preventing people on the no-fly list from purchasing firearms, subjecting every gun buyer to a full background check, banning high-capacity magazines, and increasing the minimum age requirement to buy a rifle to 21.

Protests spread across the US

The tragedy in Parkland has sparked pro-gun-control rallies beyond Florida.

A day after the shooting at Stoneman Douglas, gun control advocacy groups occupied the Massachusetts State House, demanding action on a bill that would prevent individuals who pose extreme risks to themselves or others from possessing a firearm.

In San Diego, more than 100 people gathered in support for a ban on assault weapons. Hundreds more convened outside NRA headquarters in Virginia, criticizing the influence the gun rights lobby has on politicians.

On Friday, a group called 'Student Walkout Against Gun Violence,' which appears to have been launched in response to the Florida shooting, said it is planning a nationwide walkout sometime next week in schools across the country to demand action.

Gun control remains a hot-button political issue on Capitol Hill. Though mass shootings tend to elicit increased support from lawmakers in the immediate aftermath of the massacres, that support usually dies out in the following weeks and months.

Sen. Chris Murphy has been one of the more outspoken lawmakers on gun control. Amid the Florida shooting, Murphy lashed out at his colleagues on the Senate floor for failing to act.

"This happens nowhere else other than the United States of America," Murphy, the senator from Connecticut, said. "This epidemic of mass slaughter — this scourge of school shooting after school shooting. It only happens here not because of coincidence, not because of bad luck, but as a consequence of our inaction."

Samson: 3 great lessons all Christians can learn from this powerful man’s walk with God

3 great lessons Christians can learn from Samson’s life

Improve your spiritual life by applying the following from the story of this Biblical character.

The Bible is filled with so many great, inspiring characters.

One of them is definitely Samson, a man born with powerful abilities whose life story is embedded with interesting lessons.

Here are three great lessons we can all learn from this powerful man’s walk with God.

We are born with a divine purpose

There are many who argue that we make our own path but Samson’s story knocks this outta the park.

From the beginning, we see a special gift was placed in the unborn son of Manoah and his wife, way before he was even born (see the book of Judges, chapters 13–16).

This is made evident with a visit from an angel, who directs the parents not to cut the child’s hair as it is the source of his strength. A supernatural strength put in Samson for him to eventually rescue Israel, God’s people, from the Philistines.

Just in case, this predestined purpose is not just for this powerful man.

This explains Paul’s words in Ephesians 5:15–17, which reads: “Be very careful, then, how you live,” Paul admonished, “– not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.”

Now, that we have seen what occurs before our birth, let's move right on to what happens next.

Godly purpose attracts opposition

After you are born with this divine calling, the next thing you need to know is that divine purpose does not mean smooth sailing.

Nope, it does not. As we all know, Samson’s life right to the moment of his death was filled with opposition.

At every turn, he faced antagonism from the Philistines, the woman he loved, Delilah and even sometimes himself.

For us Christians, we know that opposition is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, the Bible encourages us to face them with pure joy (see James 1:2).

We are also told to expect it in John 15:20; “‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.”

You can only successfully deal with them by relying on your creator

Right about now, you may be feeling downcast, wondering why life has to be hard.

You can take comfort in the fact that you do not have to face any opposition by yourself.

During the final moments of Samson’s life, we see God come through for him in Judges 16:28–29.

It reads: “…Then Samson called to the LORD and said, “O Lord GOD, please remember me and please strengthen me just this time, O God, that I may at once be avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.”

“Samson grasped the two middle pillars on which the house rested, and braced himself against them, the one with his right hand and the other with his left.”

This supernatural display of strength took out more people than he had killed throughout his entire life. See what happens when God steps in?

If, by any chance, you are not convinced that you can rely on God, Matthew 28:18–20 says, “Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you  always, to the very end of the age.”

In simpler words, ‘go, dominate and conquer any opposition because I am with you every step of the way.’

Thanks to a command like this, we can boldly say, “I can do all this through him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13).

Samson’s story is proof that challenges are inevitable but we can relax because, like him, we are backed by someone who has “overcome the world” (John 16:33).

Samson comes to the big screen

This amazing story is being brought to life in the new feature film called “Samson.”

Fun Fact: The lead role is played by actor Taylor James, who had a divine “vision” years before he got the part. This led him to keep his hair and workout a lot.

During a recent episode of “Pure Talk”, he said: “I had a vision as an actor and a person a few years ago to grow my hair and to maintain a certain physical appearance. It was my guiding light.”

The movie started showing in theatres from February 16, 2018.

World: Trump's conspicuous silence leaves a struggle against Russia without a leader

null

He voiced no concern that a foreign power had been trying for nearly four years to upend U.S. democracy, much less resolve to stop it from continuing to do so this year.

WASHINGTON — After more than a dozen Russians and three companies were indicted Friday for interfering in the 2016 elections, President Donald Trump’s first reaction was to claim personal vindication: “The Trump campaign did nothing wrong — no collusion!” he wrote on Twitter.

He voiced no concern that a foreign power had been trying for nearly four years to upend U.S. democracy, much less resolve to stop it from continuing to do so this year.

The indictment secured by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, underscored the broader conclusion by the U.S. government that Russia is engaged in a virtual war against the United States through 21st-century tools of disinformation and propaganda, a conclusion shared by the president’s own senior advisers and intelligence chiefs.

But it is a war being fought on the American side without a commander in chief.

In 13 months in office, Trump has made little if any public effort to rally the nation to confront Moscow for its intrusion or to defend democratic institutions against continued disruption.

His administration has at times called out Russia or taken action, and even Trump’s national security adviser Saturday called evidence of Russian meddling “incontrovertible.” But the administration has been left to respond without the president’s leadership.

“It is astonishing to me that a president of the United States would take this so lightly or see it purely through the prism of domestic partisanship,” said Daniel Fried, a career diplomat under presidents of both parties who is now at the Atlantic Council.

He said it invariably raised questions about whether Trump had something to hide. “I have no evidence that he’s deliberately pulling his punches because he has to, but I can’t dismiss it. No president has raised those kinds of questions.”

Rather than condemn Russia for its actions, Trump in the past has said he accepts the denial offered by President Vladimir Putin.

Trump has not imposed new sanctions called for in a law passed by Congress last year to retaliate for the attack on America’s political system, or teamed up with European leaders to counter a common threat.

He has not led a concerted effort to harden election systems in the United States with midterm congressional elections on the horizon, or pressed lawmakers to pass legislation addressing the situation.

Michael A. McFaul, an ambassador to Moscow under President Barack Obama, called Trump’s reaction to the indictments “shockingly weak” and said he should instead have criticized Putin for violating U.S. sovereignty or even announced plans to punish Moscow.

“Instead, he just focused on his own campaign,” McFaul said. “America was attacked, and our commander in chief said nothing in response. He looks weak, not only in Moscow but throughout the world.”

The president’s silence has not necessarily stopped lower levels of his administration from responding to Russian actions, sometimes going further than Obama, who was also criticized for not doing enough to counter Moscow’s threat.

The Trump administration has decided to send weapons to Ukraine so it can defend itself against Russian intervention and recently imposed sanctions on more human rights violators.

After Russia ordered the U.S. Embassy in Moscow to shed most of its staff, the administration responded by ordering Russia to close its consulate in San Francisco and diplomatic annexes in New York and Washington.

Likewise, in just the past few days, the Trump administration formally blamed Russia for an expansive cyberattack last year called NotPetya and threatened unspecified “international consequences.”

The nation’s intelligence agency directors, including those appointed by Trump, unanimously warned in congressional testimony that Russia was already meddling in this year’s midterm elections.

Trump’s own aides readily acknowledge the reality that he does not. Besides describing Russian interference as undeniable Saturday, Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, his national security adviser, speaking at the Munich Security Conference, said Mueller’s charges made clear that Russia had been engaged in a “sophisticated form of espionage” against the United States.

“With the FBI indictment, the evidence is now really incontrovertible and available in the public domain,” he said.

But Trump has viewed reports of Russian intrusion as a threat to his legitimacy, a way for Democrats, the news media or the “deep state” to question his victory in the Electoral College over Hillary Clinton in 2016. When his Justice Department indicted the 13 Russians and three Russian entities Friday for trying to “sow discord in the U.S. political system,” the president focused on the fact that no evidence was presented that he or his campaign was knowingly involved.

Indeed, the indictment made no assertion that the president or anyone affiliated with him did anything wrong, understandably a relief for Trump, given a year of investigation and media reports exploring the possibility of collaboration with Russia. The “information warfare against the United States,” as one Russian organization called it, started in 2014, predating Trump’s entry into the race.

But the indictment also determined that by 2016 the effort had evolved into an overt attempt to support Trump and disparage Clinton. And the charges against the Russians are not the end of the investigation by Mueller, nor do they mean there were no contacts or cooperation that may eventually spell legal trouble for people in the president’s orbit.

Previous legal filings and news accounts have documented multiple contacts between Trump’s team and Russians in 2016. Among them was a June 2016 meeting hosted by Donald Trump Jr., the president’s son; Jared Kushner, his son-in-law; and Paul J. Manafort, his campaign chairman, on the promise that Russian visitors would provide incriminating information about Clinton as part of the Russian government’s support of the elder Trump.

The charges against the Russians documented an elaborate scheme to use social media to provoke distrust of the system by creating online personas for fictitious U.S. activists and stealing identities, an operation sophisticated enough to focus on “purple states” that would be battlegrounds between Trump and Clinton.

The findings bolstered the conclusions of U.S. intelligence agencies, which for more than a year have said that Russia interfered in the election, a determination that Trump until now has dismissed as a “hoax.” Only in a written statement that aides issued in his name after his tweet Friday was any concern expressed about Russia’s attack, and then only to urge his critics to stop questioning him.

“We cannot allow those seeking to sow confusion, discord and rancor to be successful,” the statement said. “It’s time we stop the outlandish partisan attacks, wild and false allegations, and far-fetched theories, which only serve to further the agendas of bad actors, like Russia, and do nothing to protect the principles of our institutions. We must unite as Americans to protect the integrity of our democracy and our elections.”

Trump’s position stood in contrast to that of fellow Republicans who responded to the indictment with calls for tougher action against Russia. To many, the president’s reaction once again raised the question of why he would go easy on Moscow. He has spoken about Putin in generally flattering or friendly terms and avoided any direct criticism even during moments of enormous stress in the relationship between the two countries.

For the moment, the government is left to act without the president. Jeh C. Johnson, a secretary of homeland security under Obama, said the best way to stop Russia from interfering in the future is the threat of a powerful response. “When it comes to cyberattacks, it will always be easier to be on offense than defense,” he said. “But when it comes to cyberattacks between nation-states, the most effective defense is to simply make the offensive behavior cost-prohibitive.”

But the best way to do that, experts said, is for the president to lead the way. “The U.S. government cannot mobilize an effective strategy without White House leadership and prioritization,” said Heather A. Conley, a State Department official under President George W. Bush who testified at a Senate hearing in the past week on defending against Russian interference.

Despite the warnings by the intelligence chiefs and the threat detailed in the indictment, she said, “there continues to be no policy message or response, leaving our country unprotected and vulnerable.”

John P. Carlin, a former assistant attorney general for national security and chief of staff to Mueller when he was FBI director, said the president’s silence sent a message to Russia and the world.

“I think it does have consequences,” he said. The U.S. government can warn against further interference, but “it would be better if it gets driven by the commander in chief. The goal is to drive a clear message that says the United States and our allies throughout the world that share our values are drawing a line that says ‘Stop, this is unacceptable.'”
