Sports: Churros, pranks, and hallway bobsleds: Here's what Winter Olympic athletes get up to when they're not competing

Anna Fernstaedt, a skeleton racer from Germany, jumps for joy on her apartment bed at the Olympic village in Pyeongchang.

Churros, pranks, and hallway bobsleds — life looks pretty good when athletes aren't competing at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

Athletes at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang have all had to work hard.

Qualification for the Olympic games requires years of dedication, training, and skill.

So it might be easy to assume that while competitors are preparing for an event they adhere to a strict diet, work out in the gym, and go to bed early.

But some athletes like to let loose.

This involves eating churros, playing elaborate pranks on each other, and riding makeshift bobsleds down hallways inside the Olympic village.

Business Insider has collected photographs from Getty, Instagram, and Twitter to shine a light on how some competitors at the Winter Olympics have been spending their downtime.

Scroll down to find out.

Athletes tend to hang out at the Olympic village in Pyeongchang. Some nations send delegations so large they take up multiple floors within the high-rise apartment blocks. North Korea, for instance, has three floors reserved but the competitors are "separated from other nations."

Sources: CNN.

Before athletes check-in, they might sign this "Truce Wall." One of the themes of every Olympics is peace — and that is not lost on athletes. Here, three American lugers (Emily Sweeney, Erin Hamlin, and Summer Britcher) pose in front of peace symbols that were originally designated for the British Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.

Once inside, athletes can get together and hang out in the apartments, much like members of the Australian Olympic team are doing right here.

Others take advantage of the recreational centre, like Team Norway's ski jumper Robert Johansson, who needs no second invitation to shoot some pool.

The recreational centre has other activity areas, too – you can also play air hockey and pinball.

Speed skater Koen Hakkenberg of the Netherlands opts for a FIFA video game. Though it's unclear which team he has gone with, it's probably safe to assume he is representing the Dutch.

Three members of the US women's hockey team pass the time by drinking coffee and playing cards.

They also take lots of photos.

For skeleton racer John Daly, it's all about playing pranks. His favourite is the "trust fall" — a trust-building exercise where a person deliberately falls and relies on somebody else to catch them, even when they're not expecting it. Daly's favourite target is his American teammate Steven Langton, a double Olympic medalist from the Sochi games.

Snowboarder Zoi Sadowski-Synnott of Team New Zealand gets some rest before competition begins. The 16-year-old is one of the youngest competitors in Pyeongchang and finished just outside the medal positions in the slopestyle final.

When Swiss skier Fabian Boesch isn't on the slopes he spends his free time defying gravity and posting escalator tricks on his Instagram account. Boesch achieved internet fame for this stunt.

It is not the first time Boesch has engaged in hijinks as he also hijacked a pallet truck so he could use it like a bobsled.

Boesch also scaled to the top of the Olympic rings statue outside of the apartment blocks in the village.

Gold medal winning snowboarder Shaun White's social media accounts seem more introverted than Boesch's. But who can blame White for taking a moment to appreciate the view he has from his room.

Others, like American figure skater Adam Rippon, have been spending their time winning over Twitter with hilarious posts, like this…

…And this.

Chloe Kim, who is fast becoming the face of snowboarding at 17 years old, chows down on ice cream and churros — apparently they help with her nerves.

If they can handle the cold, the life of a 2018 Winter Olympian looks pretty fun.

Sports: Adam Silver hints at possible change to NBA playoffs that would eliminate conference championships

Adam Silver

NBA commissioner Adam Silver floated the possibility of seeding teams 1-16, rather than the current conference format in place.

  • NBA commissioner Adam Silver addressed a potential change to the NBA playoffs during his annual All-Star Saturday news conference.
  • Silver discussed the possibility of shifting to a system where eight teams from each conference still made the postseason, but were seeded as a single group regardless of conference affiliation.
  • The change would allow the two best teams to meet in the Finals even if they came from the same conference.
  • Such a change would require a vote from 20 of the league's 30 owners.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver hinted at a possible change to the NBA postseason during his annual All-Star Saturday news conference.

The potential change comes after years of imbalance between the Eastern and Western Conference, which has occasionally resulted in the two teams with the best record meeting before the NBA Finals. Some have argued for a change that would take the top 16 teams into the playoffs regardless of conference.

The solution Silver hinted at was a compromise of sorts — the playoffs would still consist of eight teams from each conference. The teams would be reseeded 1-16 at the start of the postseason, allowing for inter-conference matchups before the Finals.

"You also would like to have a format where your two best teams are ultimately going to meet in the Finals," Silver said. "You could have a situation where the top two teams in the league are meeting in the conference finals or somewhere else. So we're going to continue to look at that. It's still my hope that we're going to figure out ways."

Such a change would require 20 of the league's 30 owners to vote in favor of the measure, and is still likely a few years away from coming to fruition. Another hurdle will have to do with travel — with teams from different sides of the country possibly playing in the early rounds, extra days of travel would likely have to be added to the schedule as well.

While there is still no plans for a vote on the matter, Silver's comments are the most clear indication that a plan may be in the works to change the NBA postseason in the near future.

Police Is Your Friend: Police officer spotted throwing stones at a woman [Video]

The Nigerian Police Force recently killed five armed robber suspects

This surprise is coming in form of a video recording that shows a police officer throwing stones at a lady in Ijapo Estate, Akure, Ondo State.

Just when we were sure that there was little the Nigerian police could do to shock us, they go ahead and surprise us.

In the video shared by Instablog9ja, the victim is seen putting in feeble efforts to retaliate, while another police officer is seen trying to protect her from the stones.

See the post below:

Voices can be heard in the background asking about the credibility of the police after such behaviour.

They went on to express disappointment in the country as a whole but that hardly comes as a surprise.

This is one out of a long list of treacherous, unprofessional and childish behaviours exhibited by the police and in many cases, such occurrences have led to the loss of lives.

Police assaulting civilians

Nigeria is one sad story after another of assault and victimization from the people who are sworn to protect same citizens they assault on a daily basis.

From extortion to framing and implicating innocent citizens as well as killing innocents with little or no regard for life, the police has proven on more than one occasion that they are not friends with the citizens that are responsible for their earnings.

Military regimes in Nigeria saw an intense violation of human rights as less attention was paid to the rule of law especially when it concerns civilians who are without wealth.

Democracy has hardly impacted the attitude of security personnel in respect to maintaining civility.

It is the year 2018 but under them, it feels like the military era of the 80's and early 90s' all over again.

Strategy: Chipotle is testing a trendy new menu item — and it proves the struggling chain is entering a new era with Taco Bell's CEO at the helm (CMG)

Chipotle's New York City test kitchen

Chipotle added quinoa to the menu at its New York City test kitchen.

  • Chipotle added quinoa to the menu at its New York City test kitchen.
  • The trendy grain is just one of the many new menu items that Chipotle has tested in the last year, including queso, which was later added to menus across the US.
  • The chain is entering a new era, with Taco Bell's CEO taking over as top executive — a position long held by Chipotle's founder.

Chipotle is adding a trendy new item to the menu at its test kitchen.

On Monday, the struggling burrito chain began serving quinoa at its New York City test kitchen.

"The quinoa is made with red and gold quinoa tossed with a little citrus juice, cumin and freshly chopped cilantro," Chipotle representative Chris Arnold said in an email to Business Insider. "We are recommending that added to a salad, or in place of rice in another entrée."

Chipotle has long avoided adding more items to the menu, as its simple style of assembly-line food preparation has been crucial to its success.

However, Chipotle's resistance to change has begun to crumble.

In July 2017, Chipotle debuted a New York City test kitchen that is open to the public. Chipotle kicked off the location's launch by serving queso at the restaurant.

Chipotle rolled out the cheesy dip across the US in September. While critics slammed Chipotle's queso, the company reported in February that the new menu item had led to a 2% increase in customers' average check.

Chipotle hinted that more new menu items might be in the works earlier in February. Founder and CEO Steve Ells said in a call with investors that the company is considering "salads with different kinds of grains," as well as "traditional things" like nachos and quesadillas.

The chain's incoming CEO will also serve as a crucial player in Chipotle's new plan to add more new menu items.

Earlier in February, Chipotle announced that Taco Bell CEO Brian Niccol will be taking over as the chain's top executive in early March. While Chipotle has long attempted to keep its menu extremely simplistic, Taco Bell has found success by constantly rolling out new limited-time offerings, such as nacho fries and the Naked Chicken Chalupa.

Not every item that Chipotle serves in its test kitchen rolls out across the country. For example, Chipotle has been serving nachos in the test kitchen for months — but hasn't yet indicated any plans to roll out the dish to more locations.

However, the new menu item proves that Chipotle is not finished experimenting with new dishes. And, with a trendy health-conscious choice like quinoa, the chain demonstrates that adding new dishes doesn't mean it needs to ditch its obsession with quality, all-natural ingredients as it adjusts its menu strategy.

Strategy: Chipotle is testing a trendy new menu item — and it proves the struggling chain is entering a new era with Taco Bell's CEO at the helm (CMG)

Can't Take It: Woman who cried for help following bad experience dating married man receives scorn

A victim of an abusive relationship has cried for but she receives none from social media users.

A woman's request for help following an assault by a married man has received scornful comments.

A woman named Ronke Owolabi has cried for help following reports of incessant pummeling resulting from dating a married man who left her with a swollen face.

Images circulating social media showed the challenged victim with blood-stained bruises.

Her bearing seemed a sharp contrast of her actual self based on a different picture that presented a much lively and beautiful Owolabi who was seen rocking a stylish nose ring.

"Pls help me out of dis pain. Dating a married man and all I get is beating everytime," the abused woman wrote according to reports.

If she had hoped to get rescued by a semblance of a knight, that did not happen based on reactions on Instagram.

Her call for attention appeared to have inspired taunts as opposed to pity. Comments submitted by amused users have only succeeded in bashing her. She was criticized for holding on to another's husband.

Abusive marriages have become almost a trend

Violence in marriages have become a rampant thing in a Nigeria where a bigger attention is given to the dominating position of men over their wives.

The latter appear to be seen as subjects rather than partners, a reason that has seen them suffer abuse in the hands of their husbands and even flings.

On Wednesday, January 31, 2018, a divorce seeker in Ekiti State, Folasade Fatunla, has accused her husband Gbenga of stabbing her with a broken bottle for voting in the 2014 gubernatorial election.

The Ado-Ekiti Customary Court heard the complaint on Thursday, February 1, 2018, according to Punch News which reported that Fatunla, 32, packed out of the defendant's residence as a result of the violence. The pair who lived together for a period of 12 years reportedly have two children.

In addition, the complainant added that her husband has not portrayed himself as a responsible man, claiming that he often arrives home late in the night and offers nothing as welfare.

She asked the court to order Gbenga "to pay N10,000 as monthly feeding allowance of the two children, and he should also be responsible for their education at all levels," says Punch.

Garden Egg: The health benefits of this plant are incredible

Garden egg

Unknown to most people, garden egg is one of the greatest food, in terms of health benefits, for pregnant women.

The importance of consuming fruits and vegetables of all kind cannot be overemphasized.

As a matter of fact, when fruits and vegetables are consumed continuously, they help reduce the risk of many lifestyle-related health conditions.

This is why medical practitioners have been advising that we add fruits and verges to our diet because of their health benefits.

And talking about fruits and verges, it is important to note that when it comes to garden egg the health benefits are incredible.

Studies have even suggested that eating eggplant can boost overall health and well-being. And with laboratory analyses showing that the phenolic compounds in eggplant contain anthocyanins, a type of flavonoid, and chlorogenic acid, a powerful free-radical scavenger, it goes to say that this plant counted among the healthiest of plants.

Here are some of the incredible health benefits of garden egg

1. It fights cancer

Studies have shown that Polyphenols in eggplant have anti-cancer effects. The anthocyanins and chlorogenic acid that are contained in garden egg help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.

Thus preventing tumor growth and the spread of cancer cells.

It was also shown that the anticancer action of anthocyanins appears to include preventing new blood vessels from forming in the tumor, reducing inflammation, and blocking the enzymes that help cancer cells to spread.

2. It helps during pregnancy

Unknown to most people, garden egg is one of the greatest food, in terms of health benefits, for pregnant women.

It is packed with vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients which make it an essential part of the daily ration of every pregnant woman.

Given the fact that the baby is taking much of the useful nutrients for himself, women often suffer from the lack of individual components in their body. So, eating this plant can be an excellent solution to such situations.

3. It helps in weight reduction

Lifestyle experts confirm that when it comes to weight management and loss, dietary fibers are one of the most important factors because they act as "bulking agents" in the digestive system.

The compounds in garden egg do not only increase satiety, they also reduce appetite. Observation has also shown that eggplant, as it is also known, help reduce calorie intake by making a person feel fuller for longer.

4. It prevents liver disorder and help control sugar level

Studies have shown that the importance of garden egg to the liver cannot be overemphasized because the antioxidants in garden egg help protect the liver from certain toxins; thereby making it a remedy for liver issues.

However, research has also shown that garden egg helps control sugar level; making it a great dietary option for diabetic patients.

It has the ability to reduce glucose absorption in the body and lower blood sugar levels. It also possesses low soluble carbohydrates, which assist in this regard.

5. It helps to improve vision

The cream-color flesh of garden egg has a pleasantly bitter taste and this is due to the presence of small amounts of nicotinoid alkaloids it contains.

Its spongy consistency helps to protect from poor vision caused by glaucoma as well as improving overall vision.

Politics: A Secret Service agent tackled a Chinese security official over the nuclear football when Trump visited China

US President Donald Trump (R) gestures toward China's President Xi Jinping (C), as US First Lady Melania Trump (back C) is seen in the background, in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on November 9, 2017.

The nuclear football is a briefcase that allows the president to authorize a nuclear strike and should always be in close proximity to the president.

  • Axios reported on Sunday that during President Donald Trump's trip to China in November, a Secret Service member tackled a Chinese security official.
  • The incident reportedly began when Chinese detail tried to prevent the military aide carrying the "nuclear football" from entering a room behind Trump.
  • White House Chief of Staff John Kelly intervened, and was grabbed by a Chinese security official, who was then tackled by a Secret Service agent.
  • The nuclear football was never in contact with a foreign official, and the Chinese security detail later apologized.

During President Donald Trump's visit to Beijing last November, a US Secret Service agent reportedly tackled a Chinese security official after attempts to block the movement of the "nuclear football."

The nuclear football, officially known as the "president's emergency satchel," is a black leather briefcase that allows the US president to authorize a nuclear strike while away from a command center. It is carried by a military aide and is supposed to be in close proximity to the president at all times.

But according to a report from Axios, when Trump met with President Xi Jinping in Beijing's Great Hall of the People, Chinese security blocked the entry of the aide carrying the nuclear football.

A US official quickly informed Trump's Chief of Staff John Kelly who "rushed over" and told US officials, "We're moving in."

As the US delegation started moving into the hall, a Chinese security official "grabbed Kelly" who pushed away the man's hand, according to Axios. It was then that a US Secret Service agent tackled the security official to the ground.

The briefcase was reportedly never touched by a foreign official, but the head of the Chinese security head later apologized about the incident.

Five sources confirmed the incident, which reportedly ended almost as quickly as it begun, according to Axios.

Last year, during one of Trump's many visits to his Mar-a-Lago resort in southern Florida, a club member took a photo of a military aide who was reportedly responsible for carrying the nuclear football and posted it on Instagram. The incident raised concerns over whether the briefcase is still the best way for highly sensitive military information to be made available to the president on short notice.

“My friends and I definitely talk about it,” admits Marissa.

Naomi always texts her friends hooking up with a new guy—“Sometimes I just send ‘carrot emoji’ or ‘eggplant emoji’—question mark.”

Entertainment: Olympic curlers are buff now, and have the calendars to prove it

null

GANGNEUNG, South Korea — Thomas Ulsrud lifts weights, hammers through squats and hangs upside down from metal bars, molding his abdominal muscles with a sadistic series of crunches.

“I guess I was blessed a little from nature’s side,” Ulsrud said, “but I do like to work out.”

None of this would be all that unusual except that Ulsrud is a 46-year-old curler.

Obliterating the sport’s tired reputation as ground zero for paunchy, beer-swilling weekend warriors, curlers like Ulsrud, who is back at the Olympics for the third time with Norway, are representative of a growing emphasis on fitness — for men and women alike. They bench press, bang out bicep curls and lay off the sauce.

Some, like Ulsrud and Marc Kennedy, a Canadian Olympian, have gone so far as to showcase their physiques in racy promotional calendars for the sport.

“It kind of goes to show you just how far curling has come,” said Kennedy, 36, who posed shirtless while doing yoga with two curling stones for the cover of the 2018 Men of Curling Calendar.

Brian McWilliams, head trainer for USA Curling, said that when he joined the organization in 2006, he discovered that he was responsible for conditioning players who were still smoking cigarettes during fifth-end breaks, which is the equivalent of halftime.

“I was like, ‘What did I just get myself into?'” McWilliams said.

But curling, the sport that involves using brooms to direct a heavy granite rock down a sheet of ice, has joined the CrossFit age. Phill Drobnick, coach of the U.S. men, said he suspected that this was the first Olympics in which every team in the field had bought into a fitness program in the run-up to the games.

“In the past, if you were a good shotmaker, you could be pretty good and still be successful,” said Aileen Geving, who plays for the U.S. women’s team. “But the game has gotten so precise: The ice is better, and the players have gotten better. Any bit of edge is going to make a difference. So if fitness is that difference, you’re going to work for it.”

Joanne Courtney, 28, who is competing for Canada and has a reputation as one of the strongest sweepers in the world, has worked with a trainer in Edmonton to add muscle mass to her upper body. The more weight she has over the broom, she said, the more downward pressure she can apply to the ice.

She also does interval training — on treadmills and rowing machines — to hone her anaerobic fitness and her explosiveness. She does the bulk of her training in the summer.

“That’s where I try to build as much muscle as I possibly can,” she said.

Sweeping is important because it heats the ice while creating micro-scratches on the surface, which helps players control for distance and trajectory as the rock travels down the sheet.

As for Ulsrud, he said he began to focus on weight training in his mid-30s as a way of sustaining his career. He guided the Norwegians to the silver medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics and to a world championship in 2014. Ulsrud now makes it a point, he said, to outperform his younger teammates in their various conditioning tests.

The sport clearly has changed.

“It used to be older people, drinking beer all night,” Ulsrud said. “And those were the best players! You’d meet them at the bar.”

About that calendar: It features elite curlers in various states of undress — including Ulsrud, who posed in his underwear with his teammates for the month of December.

The photo shoot was on the second floor of a busy restaurant in Oslo. The lunchtime crowd was riveted.

“A lot of people were like, ‘Hey, if we have a dinner party, can you guys come over and serve?'” Ulsrud said.

The calendar is the work of George Karrys, owner and publisher of the Curling News, an industry bible based in Toronto. Karrys said he had nearly sold out of the 10,000 copies he had printed, with the net proceeds going to various charities. This is the second edition. Bowing to public demand after he had published several calendars featuring female curlers, Karrys came out with the first Men of Curling Calendar in 2014. (Ulsrud was in that one, too.)

“It was pretty explosive,” said Karrys, a former Olympic curler for Canada.

Karrys lets the curlers follow through on their own artistic visions. For the latest calendar, Ulsrud and his three teammates chose a holiday dinner tableau, with Havard Vad Petersson posing like a roasted pig with an apple in his mouth.

“He drew the short straw,” Ulsrud said.

The target audience is no secret.

“You get a lot of the older ladies up in Alberta or Saskatchewan who are just going to buy those things up,” said John Landsteiner, a member of the U.S. men’s team.

Neither Landsteiner nor any of his U.S. teammates are featured in the calendar — “We’re not exactly the beefcakes,” said John Shuster, a four-time Olympian and the team’s leader — but they were no less focused on making gains (or losses, as the case may be) in the weight room before the games.

After Shuster labored to a last-place finish alongside his teammates at the 2014 Winter Olympics, he made big changes. He worked on his conditioning, refined his diet and dropped about 35 pounds. As a result, he said, he has more energy, no longer feels jet lag after long flights and can power through tournaments.

Known as the skip, Shuster orchestrates the game plan and throws the most important shots, leaving most of the sweeping duties to his teammates. But at the U.S. mixed doubles trials in December, Schuster had to sweep — and sweep a lot, grinding through 10 matches over five days with his partner, Cory Christensen.

“I couldn’t have done that four years ago,” Shuster said.

When Karrys won a silver medal with the Canadian men’s team at the 1998 Winter Olympics, curling was making its debut at the Olympics. Karrys, who played alongside an electrician, a plumber and a golf pro, said he was the only member of his team who worked out.

“I knew there would be comparisons between curlers and real athletes from these other Olympic sports,” Karrys said in a telephone interview. “So I wanted to not only be able to perform to the best of my ability and help my team out, but I also wanted to not look terrible while I was doing it.”

In the 20 years since, curling has benefited from a slow but steady influx of funding from sponsors and national federations — and from greater exposure, too. Those who hope to reach the highest levels face more competition than ever. Many still have day jobs, but they also have high-performance coaches and regimented training schedules.

For the curlers vying for medals here in Gangneung, the Olympics are a marathon that demand endurance. Pool play for the men’s and women’s events stretches over eight days, with each team playing nine matches — and then tiebreakers, semifinals and medal rounds to follow.

“You need to be as fit as possible so that you can approach that very last stone to win the championship the same way that you did several days earlier, with the first stone of the competition,” Karrys said. “And if you’re physically dragging, everything drags — all the strategic aspects, all the actual execution of throwing the stone.”

Now, more than ever, a lot of that hard work happens in advance, at gyms far from the ice.

“You’ve got to take care of the body,” Ulsrud said, “like all the sports.”

2018 UTME: JAMB to conduct Mock test Feb 26

JAMB ends sales of exam forms today

The board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Sunday said the much anticipated conduct of the 2018 Mock Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) would now hold on Feb. 26.

The board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

According to him, a total of 245,753 of the  1,652,795 candidates that registered for this year’s  UTME are expected to write the test.

We are happy to announce to the public that the board has concluded arrangement for the conduct of the mock UTME, slated for Monday, February 26

“This is irrespective of the ongoing strike embarked upon by members of non-academic  unions of federal universities nation wide.

“Candidates will soon be informed on when to print notifications for the examination and in addition, notifications will be sent through e-mails and text messages on the schedules of their examination,” Benjamin said.

He explained that the examination was expected to be hitch free because the board had successfully reduced incidences of malfunctioning of computers by electronically integrating the systems to see their functionality and effectiveness through link tests.

“What this means is that, at the end if the exercise, whatever system that is not seen will not be used for the mock examination.

“The 2018 exercise sold a total of 1, 966,918 candidate generating profiles.

“In previous examinations this number of candidates would have paid for the forms but through our efficient and effective system of ensuring that candidates do not waste resources, we decided to introduce the profile generating regime.

“By this method, candidates will first have to   generate personal  profiles before proceeding to obtain pins, in between which they are open to deciding whether to go ahead to pay for the registration documents or otherwise,” Benjamin explained.

NAN reports that the main UTME is expected to hold nationwide from March 9 to March 17
