In Abuja: FCTA threatens to revoke undeveloped plots

Abuja City Gate

The Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) Coordinator, Umar Shuaibu, issued the warning during clearing of the Abuja airport road corridor on Thursday in Abuja.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has threatened to revoke all undeveloped plots in the FCT, especially those within layouts where infrastructure has been provided.

The Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) Coordinator, Umar Shuaibu, issued the warning during clearing of the Abuja airport road corridor on Thursday in Abuja.

He advised owners of plots on both sides of the road to choose between either developing their plots or having them revoked by the Administration.

According to him, we are hereby, once again, sending a strong message to owners of plots of land in Abuja, especially in places where infrastructure have been provided.

They should come out and develop their property, because failure to do so will have those plots revoked by the administration.

“It is their responsibility to clear all dirt in and around their plots.

“We are not the ones to do it for them. All property developers who are given allocations across the++ territory should also develop them as a matter of urgency,’’ he ordered.

Shuaibu said if the owners cannot develop their plots, it means they do not have capacity to do so, “so we will go ahead and revoke those plots and allocate them to those who are willing and able to develop them.’

The coordinator said the administration will not continue to waste resources meant for other equally important ventures on cleaning of some of the places for the plots owners.

He said the exercise was part of restoring the beauty of the Airport road, similar to what it used to be before the rehabilitation and expansion to the current 10-lane expressway.

Shuaibu said whatever the administration will do to make the important road beautiful, they will do it.

“The Minister is very concerned that we keep this expressway beautiful, and that is exactly what we are going to do and will continue to do.

“It is not just this road, it is a major gateway into the city, and we do not want it to be an eyesore for both our visitors and residents.

“We are making sure that the entire city is kept clean at all times.” he said.

The coordinator said it is AMMC’s task to clean up both sides of the road from the city gate up to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, and also to maintain its cleanliness.
o
According to him, we will do a pin down, where security personnel will be stationed around for surveillance, preventing the return of dirt to these places.

Shuaibu also stressed the possibility of planting trees and flowers on both sides of the expressway, as the corridors were being cleared.

The coordinator assured residents that in the cleaning process, bushes would be cleared, grounds level, illegal car wash spots, mechanic workshops, abandoned cars and bad tires will be removed.

Reps to probe Gov. Bello alleged importation of arms, ammunition

Abuja – The House of Representatives says it will investigate the alleged importation of arms, ammunition and military equipment by Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi State.

This followed a matter of urgent public importance by Rep. Sunday Karimi (Kogi-PDP), who noted that the House must act fast to save the lives of ordinary citizens in the state.

Karimi also expressed worry that the Nigeria Customs had done little or nothing about the said subject matter.

“Instead of the Nigeria Custom Service to promptly arrest the importer of the treasonable act of importing military hardware and items into the country, it only requested the importer to provide End-user certificate from the National Security Adviser.

The lawmaker noted that only the military was constitutionally empowered to import such item.

“I am afraid that if the trend is allowed to continue, politicians, state governors and private citizens will start to import arms under the guise of equipping the military.

“This, in the long run, will jeopardize security and lives of innocent Nigerians,” he said.

Supporting the motion, Reps. Hassan Saleh (Benue-APC) and Nnena Elendu-Ukeje (Abia-PDP), said that the problem facing the country today had to do with security.

The lawmakers stressed the need for the executive to take the proliferation of arms in the country seriously.

The motion was unanimously adopted by members when it was put to a voice vote by the Speaker, Mr Yakubu Dogara.

The House, therefore, resolved to invite the Comptroller General of Customs, Retired Col Hameed Ali to explain why it only requested end user permit.

Buhari tells Dapchi parents God will continue to console them

Malam Bashir Manzo, Chairman of the Abducted Girls Parents Association, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dapchi that the visit was a true sympathy full of assurances to the parents.

Girl Smarts: 5 serious health conditions that can be passed down through your genes

genetic conditions

If you're anything like us, you've probably been eyeing the fancy mail-in genetic tests that are all over the interwebs these days, wondering what they could possibly reveal about the secrets of your DNA.

This is where genetic testing really comes in handy.

If you're anything like us, you've probably been eyeing the fancy mail-in genetic tests that are all over the interwebs these days, wondering what they could possibly reveal about the secrets of your DNA.

Although many offer entertaining insights—curious if you’re genetically predisposed to sport a unibrow or sneeze when you look at the sun?—the real potential of such testing is to reveal your likelihood for developing serious health conditions.

For example, DNA tests from Color will analyze a vial of spit you send in the mail for 30 genes for various cancers, including BRCA1 and BRCA2, both of which are linked to breast and ovarian cancers, and hereditary cholesterol.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved the testing company 23andMe to tell consumers whether they have an increased genetic risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, which have no cure.

And, just last month, the FDA announced it would streamline the approval process for more tests, saying “[They] can prompt consumers to be more engaged in pursuing the benefits of healthy lifestyle choices.”

In an ideal world, knowing what's lurking in your DNA would motivate you to get more mammograms or other screening exams. Or you'd get serious about taking omega-3 fatty acids or commit to daily exercise—strategies that researchers believe will delay the onset of Alzheimer’s. Yet, as the applications for genetic testing expand, experts say we have the opportunity to learn more about our risk for certain diseases than we ever imagined possible.

“People are really interested in genetic testing right now. More of my patients are asking about it, and I’ve overhead parents chatting about it at my son’s little league games,” explains Bradley Patay, M.D., an internal medicine specialist at Scripps Clinic Torrey Pines in La Jolla, California.

“This interest gives us a unique opportunity to really educate the public about the potential of genomics.

Plus, the price has been coming down, so there’s some momentum to get patients engaged.” (Although the new consumer tests analyze your DNA for several conditions, your doctor might need to order a specific test, which could be covered by insurance.)

In the leap to learn more about ourselves, however, it’s important to know what genetics can and can't tell you. Just because you have a genetic predisposition for a disease doesn't mean you will get it, says Mary Freivogel, president of the National Society of Genetic Counselors. "Your environment, family history, lifestyle habits, and even pure chance also play a role,” she says.

Here, we share some genetic breakthroughs that should be on everyone’s radar:

1. Heart Disease

We know that healthy lifestyle habits are linked to a lower risk of heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in women, according to the Centers for Disease Control. (You’ve heard them before: No smoking. Maintaining a healthy BMI. Exercising regularly. Eating a diet low in red meat and saturated fat.)

Yet a landmark 2016 study of more than 55,000 participants that was published in The New England Journal of Medicine discovered just how critical those habits were for people who had a genetic risk for heart disease. The participants underwent DNA testing that looked at 50 different markers for coronary artery disease. For those who tested in the highest-risk group, adhering to a favorable lifestyle brought down their risk by 50 percent.

“This is significant research that explains the genetic underpinnings of heart disease and lets patients take actions to reduce their risk,” explains Patay. “In addition to changing your lifestyle, if you knew you were in the high-risk group, you might choose to take a statin medication earlier than you normally might,” says Patay. “That’s not a conversation doctors are routinely having with patients, but that’s going to change as we learn more."

2. Colon Polyps

This might not be your idea of Sunday dinner convo, but asking who in your family has had what are called adenomatous polyps can help you know if you’re at risk for colorectal cancer.

Such polyps might develop in your colon during your teen years, but become malignant as you get closer to 40. As many as one in five people who get the disease is related to someone who’s had it, according to the American Cancer Society.

“People usually start getting screened for colorectal cancer at age 50, but if you have a family history of colon cancer or polyps, you might need to start earlier and talk to a genetic counselor,” says Freivogel.

3. Celiac Disease

As the popularity of gluten-free products surged over the past decade, the world became a lot more aware of the trials and tribulations of people who suffer from celiac disease. Unlike people with intolerances who deal with temporary digestive issues after eating gluten, celiac patients who ingest the wheat protein experience serious harm to their small intestine.

According to the Celiac Disease Foundation, people with a first-degree relative with the disease (meaning a parent, child, or sibling) have a one in 10 risk of getting this themselves, since there are genes associated with celiac disease. Although having one or more gene doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll develop the disease, you shouldn't delay getting evaluated by a doctor if you also develop the classic celiac symptoms of abdominal pain or weight loss.

4. High Cholesterol

Sadly, people often only learn they have this deadly condition when a loved one has a heart attack at a young age. People with the genetic disorder called familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) have dangerously high levels of LDL, or “bad cholesterol,” from birth and are 20 times more at risk for early heart disease, including heart attacks and stroke, according to the FH Foundation. Genetic testing combined with a simple blood cholesterol test can lead to diagnosis and treatment with statins.

“FH is the most common genetic cause of early heart disease, but with early treatment an individual’s risk can be reduced by 80 percent,” says Daniel Rader, M.D., professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine. “Unfortunately FH is highly undiagnosed, with 90 percent of people unaware they have the condition."

5. Depression

Researchers still have so much to learn about the genetic roots of mental conditions. Still, looking at your family history can provide clues to your blues. “Just because someone in your family has depression doesn’t mean you will, but it’s more likely if two or more people on the same side of your family are affected,” says Freivogel.

Being mindful of your family’s mental-health history might prompt you to seek treatment if you’re going through a rough patch, and some genetic tests can help determine which medications you’ll respond best to, according to Mayo Clinic.

Daddy Freeze: OAP comes for Samklef again!

Daddy Freeze

We don't think there is any hope in sight for the end of the feud between Daddy Freeze and Samklef.

The rift between Daddy Freeze and Samklef is far from over as the OAP comes for the music producer again.

In what looks like a hilarious but straightforward bant, Daddy Freeze took to his Instagram page on Wednesday, March 14, 2018, where he posted a photo of the old storybook, 'Akin Goes To School' but removed Akin from the title and photoshopped it with SamKlef's name.

Freeze went further by giving the title of the book 'Samklef goes to school' a captioned quote which was a direct message meant for Samklef.

"Education is key! It’s never too late to return to school! Keep your kids in school so they don’t end up like……..Calling some people ignorant is an insult to ignorant people. I have worn watches with higher IQs than….lol …..The proceeds from this free promo we are giving you should be used for night school, or a private tutor for the elderly as your career don die since!" he wrote.

The last time these guys threw shades at each other was a couple of days ago and it was really messy as they not only called each other out but also got their families involved.

ALSO READ: Majek Fashek's manager threatens to beat up Daddy Freeze

Samklef had on Thursday, March 8, 2018, put up a photo of Daddy Freeze on his Instagram page with a very long epistle and threw some jabs at the OAP.

Trust Daddy Freeze who has never taken the back seat when it comes to conceding to jabs, as he too went on to give Samklef a piece of his mind on his Instagram page and also called out the music producer's son.

The feud between these guys started on Sunday, January 14, 2018, when Daddy Freeze made a comment about the photo where an alleged insane man was healed at a branch of the Redeemed Christian Church of God. Well, Samklef called out Daddy Freeze over the comments and as usual, Daddy Freeze blasted him.

Relationship Talk With Bukky: My wife says she'll rather stay with her mum than with me

My wife has refused to leave her mum & come home to me.

l’m fed up now because the time we agreed for her to leave there has expired but she has refused to leave.

Dear Bukky,

I have married for the past 14 years now, God has blessed us with two kids, but we are not staying together because she works in the northern area while l’m in the South.

But now l’m fed up because the time we agreed for her to leave has expired and l am tired of the marriage for now.

Her mother is not helping the matter at all because she's with her there.

Please l need your advice.
_______________

Dear reader,

Don’t give up just yet. I think the first thing to consider your wife and how uneasy it must be, leaving a job that I guess she likes and draws fulfilment from.

If you have been communicating with her before, don’t stop. I think you should do it in a way you would do with a partner as opposed to the authoritative manner you would with an apprentice of employee, so to speak.

Make her see reasons why she belongs with you and not her mum, make her see why the marriage is hinged on you both being together.

A wife always belongs with her husband and not with her folks. I’m sure she knows this, but I believe it is your responsibility to make her see this.

14 years is a long time to work on something and then let it just rot away without trying to salvage it.

Marital Advice: Helpful tips in marriage

Marriage is not the end of the journey but the beginning of it.

Sometimes, people have no clue on what next to do when they have gotten married as to keep the vibes up and fun.

You met, chatted; fell in love, got married and now what? Does this sound like you can relate to it?

This seems to be the basic cycle of some relationships and we get to a point that we think either we merely exist in this relationship or we’re just taking it one day at a time. Sometimes, people have no clue on what next to do when they have gotten married as to keep the vibes up and fun. All things working out for good, you are on a long ride so you might as well find ways to spice it up and enjoy it.

Marriage is not the end of the journey but the beginning of it. It is a new chapter in your life so be certain things might appear differently than they looked during dating period and you have to find ways to accommodate and deal with them without compromising on your happiness.

There are things you can only learn and understand about marriage only when you are in it. It comes with its own full package and there might be questions arising in your marriage that you alone can find the right answers to. There is no copy and paste solution anywhere for your marriage as every marriage and everyone in it is unique but you can find some helpful tips here and there from people who are making a success of it that you can tweak and apply to yours to boost it.

Let’s look at a few of those helpful tips that may help us in marriage

Make sure you love the person you are marrying

This just makes things easier in marriage as love can cover a multitude of imperfections. Loving your spouse can help you see the brighter side of them and help you dwell more on their strengths and not weaknesses. If there is turbulence in the sea of marriage at any time, be sure your love for each other would come in handy

Know when to ignore and be silent

You just don’t have to respond and react to every action from your spouse. There is wisdom in knowing when to ignore, let it go and move on. All the nagging, fights and insults are not worth it and they are very unhealthy and dilute the sweetness of a marriage. Remind yourself that there is always a corresponding reaction to every action from you to your spouse and this will guide you in the right path.

Make your spouse your friend

Sometimes this might not happen overnight especially if it was lacking before you entered into the marriage but it will certainly be a healthy addition and spice to your marriage when some other pillars wobble. I cannot stress enough the importance of this but where everything is down; the friendship you both have built will put up a wall of protection to your marriage. Be each other’s friend, enjoy more the company of your partner, laugh at your jokes, spend more time together and alone, bond over your favourite television shows or over an activity you both enjoy. Don’t let your children come in between both of you as they will always have their times and moments.

Listen to understand

This is a simple but yet an important tip couples overlook in marriage. That you are quiet and calm when your spouse is talking does not necessarily mean you are listening or paying attention to them. Sometimes, we listen just to pick enough points to respond to. Let it be known to your spouse that you actually listened to his/her concerns and understood from their point of view first.

Have a financial plan for your family

The issue of money has caused many rifts in marriages. Feel free to talk with your spouse about what money is available, how it should be spent and what lifestyle you can afford at any given point in time. Be open about the current financial situation at home and constantly review them as the financial situation changes for good or not so good.

Never stop dating or going on a date with your spouse

Keep going on date nights with your spouse. Go watch movies together, eat out and it doesn’t have to be fancy restaurants if money is an issue, it could just be two of you going out to grab a snack and chat away while enjoying your night out. You can employ the services of grandparents or any other help to babysit if there are children involved. Just find time to go out and spend quality time together…it energises your marriage.

Communication is vital

When information is passed across and it’s not understood by your partner then communication is not yet complete. Do not assume things with your partner; don’t sweep issues under the carpet as they will keep re-surfacing and each time, bigger than before. Set time aside to talk on issues affecting the family, make sure no voice is raised as the purpose will be defeated. Communicate calmly and lovingly without pointing accusing fingers at each other. Don’t bury deep thoughts about your spouse inside of you as you might just end up being a ticking time bomb, waiting to explode.

Find reasons to praise your spouse

I have not seen a wife who constantly praises her husband both privately and publicly for the good work he does in providing for his family that does not have a man who keeps thriving to do even more and vice-versa. A man who constantly acknowledges his wife’s effort in keeping their home will always have a submissive wife. Praising your spouse will boost their ego and make them want to do more and be better.

Short Story: Pot of stew

I looked at Aunty Amaka and found a smug expression on her face.

Despite all these, no mother let her daughter go near Aunty Amaka. It wasn’t a secret that she was a woman of the night and some of them secretly believed she was from the river, a maami water

Each time I think of the word trouble, I do not picture a raging monster. Rather, I picture Mama Bashira who lived two rooms away in our face me-I face you house some years back.

Mama Bashira.

She was a pure market woman with tribal marks all over her "I use bleaching cream” light complexion. Fighting was in her blood. She was also the first person to call me a bastard even though I had explained to her a thousand times that my father was dead. She got jealous over the smallest things. Like, for instance, when my mother got permission from our always drunk landlord to open a small shop right in front of the house.

Mama Bashira would walk in front of our shop, pretending to be waiting for someone, and she would mutter words intended to incite my mother.

“ Ordinary biscuit, a o le ri. Somebody cannot owe them small money. Bashira, ma gba oju e!"

I always wondered why my mother never replied her. She would pretend not to hear her and don on a faraway look. Sometimes though, I think Mama Bashira got to her.

Tyrant.

Unfortunately for me, the aggression would be transferred and I was a recipient of several dirty slaps or knocks depending on how angry she was. Mama Bashira was also a beggar. She never had maggi and she always forgot to buy tomato paste. On a few occasions, I would lie and say we had also run out of maggi. We weren’t the only ones who disliked Mama Bashira. Everybody in the house did. She made Mama Bolu cry at least once a week, she accused Kunle the corper of trying to seduce Bashira and she always said Aunty Amaka was the one who kept stealing meat from her pot.

Aunty Amaka.

Aunty Amaka was the only person Mama Bashira’s mouth had no influence over. With a beautiful smile and light skin that shone glamorously unlike Mama Bashira's fake light skin, Aunty Amaka was beautiful. She also had a rich laughter which would spill over to our own room in the night. Despite all these, no mother let her daughter go near Aunty Amaka. It wasn’t a secret that she was a woman of the night and some of them secretly believed she was from the river, a maami water.

Aunty Amaka was the one who showed us, my friend Titi and I, how to apply lipstick since our mothers were SU to the core using only Vaseline during the harmattan. She would smile mischievously each time she passed by Mama Bashira as if to tell her that she knew all she said about her and she didn’t care. One day, Aunty Amaka found Mama Bolu trying to commit suicide in the backyard. Mama Bolu was a meek and quiet woman who took things very personal. Aunty Amaka then promised her that she would take action and managed to convince her not to commit suicide.

Missing Pot of Stew!

One Friday evening, Mama Bashira came back from the market. Two minutes later, her loud voice pierced the still air.

Olosho buruku yi!  She has done it again!”

My mother and I were sleeping when Mama Bashira’s voice woke us up. It was her “I will beat up this witch” cry. Quickly, my mother tied her wrapper as I rolled off the bed and we went out quickly. All our neighbors were already outside, watching the scenario. Aunty Amaka’s room was at the end of the corridor.

“Come out o! You will produce my pot of stew today! Bo sita!”

Mama Bashira was already retying her wrapper as Aunty Amaka opened the door and closed it immediately. She was in one of her short silk nighties which was sheer. I saw Baba Iyabo ogling her and licking his lips.

“What is it again, Mama Bashira?”

“Where is my pot of stew?! You think I don’t know you took it abi?”

Aunty Amaka didn’t look surprised. She gave Mama Bashira a dark stare.

“Which rubbish stew? Please I’m busy jare.”

As she turned to go, Mama Bashira pulled her back. The strap of silky nightie fell off one arm, putting Aunty Amaka’s breasts on display but Aunty Amaka liked to put her body on display so she didn’t fight to cover up. Kunle the corper looked like he wanted to run off with Aunty Amaka and Baba Iyabo had probably lost the will to speak. Kunle got in between them and tried to push Mama Bashira off but she held on to the flimsy dress, shouting.

“We must search her room o! Mi o gba se!”

Spilled Beans

It all happened so fast. Mama Bashira pushed Kunle and Aunty Amaka out of the way and barged into her room. Kunle held Aunty Amaka using the excuse of helping her up to clutch her behind firmly with one hand and her waist with the other. We watched as the two of them pretended to balance the other while grabbing various body parts.

As if on cue, we all gravitated towards Aunty Amaka’s room and we found her standing, her mouth open in shock. On Aunty Amaka’s bed lay Baba Bashira who was frantically trying to use the bed sheet to cover his body. I looked at Aunty Amaka and found a smug expression on her face. Several voices exclaimed in shock and my mother muttered a solemn “God!”.

“That’s your stew pot on the floor.”

Aunty Amaka sat on a chair and spread her legs suggestively. Mama Bashira looked like she was about to cry. Her husband was her weak spot.

“She seduced me. Ise esu ni.” Baba Bashira said very quietly.

Up till now, we do not know where Mama Bashira is.

Sports: Our best bets for the first round of March Madness

Deandre Ayton and the Arizona Wildcats will be playing with a chip on their shoulder when they enter the NCAA Tournament.

With your March Madness bracket already set, there's still plenty of great bets to make on the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

March Madness is upon us and with it all the chaos that brackets bring.

Whether you're building your bracket for the first time, or are a veteran of NCAA Tournament pools merely looking for an edge with the help of Las Vegas or Nate Silver, there is no wrong way to fill out your bracket.

That said, there's plenty of gambling to do on March Madness that goes beyond the bracket. Below you can check out our best bets for the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

No. 10 Oklahoma (+2) over No. 7 Rhode Island (Thursday, 12:15 p.m. CBS)

Oklahoma is not the type of team I would typically want to pick in this spot. They lost 11 of their final 15 games of the season and were an altogether unconvincing bubble team that snuck into the tournament.

But the thing that sets them apart is Trae Young, who will be the best player on the court by a pretty good margin. Rhode Island is a solid team that put together an impressive 16-game win streak in the middle of the season, but they don't come into the tournament that hot either. They lost three of their last five games, including dropping the Atlantic 10 championship to Davidson in gut-wrenching fashion.

I want to get my gambling started early in the day, so we're going to take the best player in the country and not overthink this one.

No. 3 Tennessee (-12) over No. 14 Wright State (Thursday, 12:40 p.m. truTV)

Of the college basketball I've seen this year, Tennessee is one of the few teams that's impressed me every time I've seen them. Of their 25 wins, ten have been by more than 12 points, and have come against teams as good or better than Wright State. I'm looking for the Vols to roll through this one.

No. 16 Penn (+13.5) over No. 1 Kansas (Thursday, 2 p.m. TBS)

The Ivy League championship was one of the most enthralling games of basketball I watched all year. Harvard jumped to a 30-17 lead with five minutes left in the first half, only for the Quakers to catch fire to finish the half on a 17-2 run to take a 34-32 lead into halftime.

To open the second half, Penn scored another 11 before Harvard got their first bucket, making it a 28-2 run all told.

No 16-seed has ever scored a victory in the history of the NCAA Tournament beyond a play-in game, but the Quakers can shoot their way back into any game in just a few minutes, and I like them to give the Jayhawks a scare in the first round.

No. 11 Loyola-Chicago (+1.5) over No. 6 Miami (Thursday, 3:10 p.m. truTV)

Loyola-Chicago comes into the game as winners of 10 straight games and Miami will be missing their best player due to injury. If anything, I'm worried this is too trendy a pick, but winning teams tend to stay winning in the NCAA Tournament.

No. 9 NC State (+2.5) over No. 8 Seton Hall (Thursday, 4:30 p.m. TBS)

NC State has wins over Arizona, Duke, and North Carolina this season, so there is no doubt they can hang with the best teams in the country. Seton Hall has a few impressive wins of their own, including a back-to-back stretch against Texas Tech and Louisville. But I don't think they have the horses to hang with the Wolfpack.

No. 5 Kentucky (-5) over No. 12 Davidson (Thursday, 7:10 p.m. CBS)

While the Las Vegas line indicates this game should be far from a blowout, I still like Kentucky to prevail here. Davidson is no pushover, and everyone loves a good 12-vs-5 upset, but they haven't won a game in the NCAA Tournament since Stephen Curry took the team all the way to the Elite Eight in 2008.

Since John Calipari took over as head coach of Kentucky in 2009, the team has never lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and made it to the Elite Eight in six of their seven trips to March Madness. Winning by more than five points should not be a problem.

No. 4 Arizona (-8.5) over No. 13 Buffalo (Thursday, 9:40 p.m. CBS)

Deandre Ayton and the Arizona Wildcats will be out for blood in the NCAA Tournament. After ESPN tied the school to the ongoing FBI investigation, head coach Sean Miller had to come out and make a statement denying all charges. Since then, the Wildcats have won five straight en route to capturing the Pac-12 title.

It's not a small spread by any means, but I have a feeling Arizona will be looking to make a statement in the early goings of the tournament.

No. 11 St. Bonaventure (+5.5) over No. 6 Florida (Thursday, 9:55 p.m. truTV)

St. Bonaventure won their First Four game against UCLA on Tuesday and looked mighty solid doing it, showing a few different defensive looks that kept the Bruins off-balance all game. I like them to keep things close with the Gators on Thursday.

No. 10 Butler (-1.5) over No. 7 Arkansas (Friday, 3:10 p.m. truTV)

Butler is favored despite being the lower seed. The Bulldogs have found a way to steal at least one win in all six of their trips to the NCAA Tournament since 2010, and I don't see the trend stopping this year.

No. 14 Bucknell (+14.5) over No. 3 Michigan State (Friday, 7:10 p.m. CBS)

If this game weren't in Michigan I'd probably bet the Bison on the moneyline to win straight up – it's available for +750 for any brave souls out there. But this being a virtual home game for Tom Izzo and the Spartans, I'm just taking Bucknell and the points.

No. 12 New Mexico State (+5) over No. 5 Clemson (Friday, 9:57 p.m. truTV)

Can't leave the first weekend of March Madness without a good ol' fashioned 12-5 upset now, can we?

The Wildcat parlay

With 11 regular bets already set to help you through the first two days of March Madness, we have a bit of room to get weird with our final wager of the opening games.

We're betting on Wildcats.

By my count, there are five "Wildcats" teams in the field of 68 — Villanova, Arizona, Kentucky, Kansas State, and Davidson. Four of them even appear right next to each other in the bracket. For the final bet of the weekend, I recommend putting them all together in a parlay, just for the thrill of it.

Villanova (-23.5) over Radford, Arizona (-8.5) over Buffalo, Kansas State (+1) over Creighton, and Over 143 in Kentucky/Davidson.

Should all four bets hit, the payout should be a little over 12/1. You can make the same wager, but against Wildcats, or even add Tigers and Bearcats, to your parlay depending on your feelings towards felines or creatures with feline-sounding names. There's also plenty of betting options for fans of Bulldogs as well.
