Buhari: I am grateful to those investing in Nigeria, says President

I am grateful to those investing in Nigeria - Buhari

The president said investments have helped to provide employment for Nigerians.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday expressed appreciation to foreign and local investors that agreed to commit their investment into Nigeria, aimed at boosting the country's economy.

Buhari, who unveiled a plaque to commemorate his visit to the Eko Atlantic City project, expressed his appreciation to investors after being shown round the project by Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State.

He said that their investment had helped to provide employment for Nigerians, reducing the rate of unemployment in the country.

"I am extremely grateful to those that agreed to invest so much in our country. I have just gone round to see the Eko Atlantic City. I am extremely impressed with the potentiality of this project and the amount of jobs and its effect on the economy and what it is capable of bringing," Buhari said.

The President, while expressing his satisfaction with the ocean reclamation embarked upon by the state government and its partners, said that the investment had impacted on the country's economy.

Earlier, Gov. Ambode said that the project was an example of what the private sector could do to the nation's economy.

Ambode, who said the project was initiated by the Bola Tinubu administration, noted that it had actually saved the whole of Victoria Island from potential danger.

He said that the project, which would spread over 750 square kilometres, upon completion, would eventually be bigger than Victoria Island.

In an interview with newsmen, Tinubu, who accompanied the President on the tour, described the Eko Atlantic City project as a solution to a potentially dangerous liability.

According to Tinubu, the ocean surge at the Ahmadu Bello end could have wiped out the whole of Lagos Island.

He, however, advised the Federal Government to replicate the project on the nation's coastline.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the inspection marked the end of Buhari's two-day visit to the state.

Politics: The US Army is looking to put a massive 40mm cannon on its Bradleys and Strykers

null

The 40mm Cased Telescoped Cannon is up to four times more powerful than a 30mm cannon.

  • BAE Systems recently showed off its new 40mm Cased Telescoped Cannon at Fort Benning in Georgia.
  • The US Army is looking to add more firepower to its Strykers, Bradleys, and other armored vehicles.
  • The 40mm cannon fires six different kinds of rounds, able to take out a variety of armored vehicles and even older tanks.

BAE Systems showed off its new 40mm cannon at Fort Benning in Georgia last week, as the US Army looks to add more fire power to its Strykers, Bradleys, and perhaps other combat vehicles, according to Defense News.

"Everything went perfectly," Rory Chamberlain, a business development manager at BAE Systems, told reporters after the cannon was fired, Defense News reported. BAE Systems is one of the largest defense companies in the world.

CTA International, a joint venture between BAE Systems and Nexter, began developing the weapon in 1994, and the gun was recently chosen by the UK and France for their new Ajax and EBRC Jaguar armored vehicles, according to The War Zone.

The cannon has six kinds of cased telescoped ammunition (meaning the projectile is in the cartridge with the charge), including aerial airbust rounds, airbust rounds, armor piercing rounds, point detonating rounds, and two more designated for training.

The 40mm rounds are up to four times stronger than 30mm rounds, according to BAE Systems. You can read more about the specs for these rounds here.

Depending on which round is used, the cannon can take out a variety of armored vehicles and even older tanks, like the Russian T-55, The War Zone reported.

One of the most benefitial features of the gun is that it can fire at a high angle, making urban fighting easier, according to Defense News.

Chamberlain told Defense News that "Stryker lethality is open, as much as they got the Dragoon, that is a fat turret and it's doing its job and it's what they wanted," adding that the lethality and requirements for the upgrade are still to be decided.

He said the same is possible for the Bradley, but Maj. Gen. David Bassett told Defense News in late 2017 that the Army is looking to replace its 25mm Bushmaster with a 30mm cannon.

Entertainment: In Munich and Stuttgart, directors give the classics a twist

In Munich and Stuttgart, directors give the classics a twist

STUTTGART, Germany — When it comes to theater in Germany, only one claim can be made with any certainty: If you’re expecting Masterpiece Theater, go elsewhere.

Directors here have a not-undeserved reputation for making mincemeat of the likes of Chekhov, Ibsen and Shakespeare.

The disasters and competing ideologies of the 20th century have left a heavy mark on Germany, a country with a deep and flourishing dramatic tradition, and the classics — the representative works of a culture that descended sharply into barbarism — are often presented in a jarringly original light, reinterpreted or even dissected.

Friedrich Schiller’s “Die Räuber” (“The Robbers”) from 1781 is among the most studied and performed of all German plays.

In Ulrich Rasche’s shattering production at the Residenz Theater in Munich, the stage is dominated by enormous treadmills that roll continuously like the tracks of a tank, lifting the actors to the sky or tilting them toward the abyss.

In this way, Rasche, who also designed the sets, places this key work of the Sturm und Drang movement, with its exploration of human freedom and the struggle between good and evil, in a dark and strikingly abstract setting.

Schiller’s five-act melodrama dramatizes many of the main concerns of the Enlightenment in a tale of sibling rivalry. Franz, the unloved son of the aging Count von Moor, will stop at nothing — not even patricide — to steal the birthright of his older brother, Karl. Through both cunning and rationalism, Franz succeeds in blackening his brother’s name. Karl, disgraced and disowned, becomes the leader of a band of robbers who fight the corruption of the feudal system. The band of violent anarchists sees theft, arson and even murder as justified in their struggle for freedom.

With Rasche’s single, machine-dominated set, the setting is evoked purely through Schiller’s dialogue, crisply declaimed by actors walking or jogging — often secured with harnesses — on the massive rolling bands. Over the three-hour running time, it looks like quite a workout.

The star is Katja Bürkle as the villainous Franz Moor. New to the Residenz Theater ensemble, she turns out a bloodcurdling, no-holds-barred performance of operatic intensity. And while casting an actress in this role does, to an extent, force the audience to reflect on the role of women in the patriarchy — an issue that Schiller’s text doesn’t explore — I feel certain that Bürkle was chosen for her acting abilities and not because the director felt his production needed a feminist twist. Franz is a lengthy and murderously complex role, and having Bürkle front and center most of the time was an effective counterpoint to the male-dominated production.

As a director, Rasche strives for dramatic mood and effect through music and ritualistic methods. In “Die Räuber,” the American composer Ari Benjamin Meyer’s pulsating score for violin, viola, electric bass and drums, performed live from the sides of the stage, creates a dronelike, hypnotic effect. The robber band itself becomes something of a Greek chorus, reciting both dialogue from the play and texts by the Invisible Committee, an anonymous radical leftist French author (or collective), as two baritones and a tenor chant a grim, martial hymn.

Along with his better-known contemporary Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Schiller adored and venerated Shakespeare, whose plays had been performed in German since the early 17th century — a time when no other translations existed. Shakespeare remains a superstar of Germany’s vast and generously funded theater scene. While classic translations, including several by Schiller himself, are still used, it is increasingly common to present modern-language translations. No doubt, this method entails a trade-off: What is lost in poetic beauty and precision is gained in emotional, dramatic and even psychological immediacy.

Claus Peymann’s production of “König Lear” at the Schauspiel Stuttgart uses a new performing version by Jutta Ferbers, supplemented by Peter Handke’s modern translations of the fool’s songs. As Shakespeare’s darkest, most nihilistic work, “Lear” benefits from such contemporary idiomatic directness. Without needing to work through Shakespeare’s ornate language, one is especially struck by the work’s pervasive cruelty and pessimism.

Peymann is the former artistic director of the Berliner Ensemble, and the starkly focused style he honed at Bertolt Brecht’s old theater during his long tenure there is evident in this sparse production, where the action is confined to an empty circle. Throughout, the stage remains bare save for Lear’s golden crown dangling from a fishing-hook center stage: an image that becomes a powerful symbol for the work as a whole. There are neon lights, gusts of rain and music, but the success of the production rests largely on the actors’ shoulders.

Martin Schwab, a longtime member of Vienna’s Burgtheater, made for a flustered and impetuous Lear. With nothing mannered about his brash performance, he managed Lear’s stubbornness, madness and grief convincingly, without grand theatrical flourishes. The 80-year-old actor, clad in white linen, undoubtedly possessed gravitas, but it was consistently undercut by this production’s ability to expose the play’s unadorned, naked brutality.

Peymann’s most audacious idea was casting one actress as both Cordelia and the Fool, an inspiration tied to a scholarly debate that Shakespeare may have written both roles for the same actor. Regardless of the original intent, it was an ingenious and often heartbreaking move, thanks to Lea Ruckpaul’s brilliantly pliable performance. As Lear’s silent, modest daughter, one understood the emotional pain that her repressed affection cost her. As the jester who accompanies the mad king on his wanderings, she caterwauled and played a squeezebox while childishly giving vent to the anguish that Cordelia only hints at.

Nearly four years into Armin Petras’ tenure as artistic director, the Schauspiel Stuttgart has become one of the most exciting dramatic stages in Germany. If “Lear” has been the theater’s biggest success of the season thus far, then Kay Voges’ “Das 1. Evangelium,” freely adapted from the New Testament, is far and away the most controversial.

Theater scholars and practitioners may treat works by Schiller and Shakespeare as sacred texts. In terms of sanctity, however, their plays have nothing on the Bible. Voges, who leads the Schauspiel Dortmund, has cooked up an insane multimedia montage that turns “The Greatest Story Ever Told” into a riotously colorful, loud and exactingly choreographed romp through the New Testament.

Or is it?

It’s easy to identify the figures standing in for Jesus and Mary, but the metatheatrical frame, with a filmmaker struggling to make a Jesus movie, is both ludicrous and banal. In addition to the biblical sources, the script contains quotes from Joseph Beuys, Allen Ginsberg, Jean-Luc Godard, Susan Sontag and R.E.M. It would all be megapretentious if it weren’t so flat-out idiotic.

Monty Python offered a sharper satire with “Life of Brian,” and Pier Paolo Pasolini was far more radical — and genuine — with “The Gospel According to St. Matthew.” With its mixture of kitsch, excess and slick production values, “Das 1. Evangelium” illustrates the pitfalls of Germany’s “Regietheater” (“director’s theater”), a staging philosophy where a director wields virtually unlimited power.

But Rasche, Peymann and countless others prove that, when exercised correctly, that power can achieve brilliant and provocative effects, keeping the classics fresh, exciting and vital.

Homecoming: Major cultural exchange between UK & Nigeria

Skepta Performance

The project is led by British born Nigerian, Grace Ladoja, who recently was awarded an MBE for her services to music.

Skepta, J Hus and Not3s will join home-grown stars including Wizkid, Davido, Tiwa Savage during the ‘Homecoming’ show taking place on 2nd April at the Balmoral Convention Centre, Federal Palace.

The show will be the focal point of a major cultural exchange between the UK and Nigeria which will also feature a range of activations from fashion pop-ups to talks and workshops and a celebration of football. This will be the first of its kind in Nigeria as local brands such as Orange Culture, Kenneth Ize, WafflesnCream will showcase limited edition pieces next to international brands such as MAINS, OFF-WHITE and Patta.

The heartbeat of the Homecoming is to connect contemporary African music with global music icons to create an on-going meaningful legacy in Nigeria which champions music and culture.

The sense of community, vibrancy and talent of Nigerian culture has had a massive influence on the world at large and as such provides the perfect opportunity to further tell the Greatness Only story through the African lens to the world. The characters, the sounds, the culture of the country will come through with the Homecoming platform to disrupt outdated structures and allow up and coming artists to create their own independent frameworks through their youthful exuberance, pride and a fresh perspective on patriotism.

The project is led by British born Nigerian, Grace Ladoja, who recently was awarded an MBE for her services to music. In her capacity as manager and cultural advisor to Skepta, Ladoja has helped shape the trajectory of one of the UK’s leading independent artists, with the latter also playing an integral role in the formation of the Homecoming concept.

The live show in association with BBK Africa which started as a hashtag created by Declan Echeazu when Boy Better Know visited Nigeria in 2011 and since become  a movement for like minded artists in Africa.

Ladoja says: “When I first went to Lagos in 2013, I truly connected with my identity, my roots and family, but most significantly I felt genuinely connected to Nigeria, independently of my parents. I was struck by the fact that many immigrant parents – including mine – relocate in the hope that their children will one day move back to Nigeria to contribute to the future of their home cities”.

The Homecoming is not just aimed at musicians. The project serves as a way of showcasing and empowering the full spectrum of Nigeria’s creative talent.

She adds: “This is just the beginning. The Homecoming is a lifetime mission. We want to work with young and upcoming businesses in every aspect of this project to help them grow their businesses. From the tech company designing our app, the chauffeur company looking after the artists, to the hotelier that will host our party – this is for all Nigerians”.

Plans are also currently underway for a UK leg of the exchange, which is expected to see a number of home-grown Nigerian artists travel to the UK for a special show later this year.

In Zamfara: More 30 buried after bandit attack

More 30 buried in Zamfara after bandit attack

The bandits attacked after some members of the community met to discuss measures to be taken against them.

More than 30 people were buried in Bawan Daji village of Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara on Thursday, March 29, 2018, following a gunmen attack on the village.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the bandits attacked the area after some members of the community held a meeting to discuss measures to be taken against the bandits during the 2018 farming season.

The bandits had earlier threatened that there would be no farming activities in the area in this year's rainy season.

Liman Umar, one of the community leaders and the deputy Imam of the village, told newsmen that the bandits had been harassing people in the area, brandishing sophisticated weapons without talking to anyone.

"It was shortly after our local vigilante members held the meeting on Tuesday that the bandits finally struck and killed only men including those who tried to escape," Umar said

He said many bodies were found decomposing in the bushes, and that some of the corpses could not be brought into the village for proper burial because people were afraid to go and get them as the bandits were believed to be hiding on the outskirts of the village.

He said one of the villagers, Danladi Shabalai, who was caught communicating with the bandits, was shot and killed by security men.

The Chairman of Anka LGA, Alhaji Mustapha Gado, confirmed that 32 people were buried including a woman and her child who died at a hospital in Gusau.

Gado said more bodies were still being searched for in the bushes and that security measures had been stepped up in the area, but that the villagers had all fled out of fear that the bandits might return.

The Emir of Anka, Alhaji Attahiru Ahmad, who is also the Chairman of the state's Council of Chiefs, lamented that the horrific incidences of bandits' attacks had continued unabated in the area due to inadequate security.

Pope Francis: Pontiff‘s latest advice is perfect for Nigerian politicians

Pope Francis' new advice is perfect for Nigerian politicians

On Holy Thursday, the pope offered some advice to prisoners, priests, and the rest of humanity.

Listen up, Nigerian politicians! Pope Francis has some advice that is perfect for you. Actually, it also works for everyone.

The leader of the Roman Catholic church delivered the message at the Regina Coeli prison for a foot-washing ceremony on March 29, 2018, according to The Washington Post.

While washing the feet of 12 prisoners in a Holy Thursday ritual, Francis emphasized the need to serve others “like a slave,” as Jesus did.

“Your chief must be your servant. So often I think … how many wars would have been avoided if all those kings, emperors and heads of state had understood this teaching of Jesus rather than command and be cruel and kill people,” he said.

Pope Francis advises prisoners

During his homily, the pontiff encouraged the inmates to keep hope alive. The prisoners were from Nigeria, Italy, Morocco, Moldova, Colombia, and Sierra Leone, according to the Vatican.

Disclosing the fact that he has cataracts, a condition that clouds the eyes, the pope advised the inmates to do a daily “cataract surgery for the soul” in order to keep hope alive.

“At my age, for example, cataracts come and you don’t see reality well. Next year I have to have an operation,” he added.

Pope Francis advises priests

Earlier that day, the pontiff also offered some advice to Catholic priests.

During another Holy Thursday service in St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Francis taught priests how to deal with ‘sinful’ members.

He urged priests to teach members, adulterers in this case, how to avoid sinning again instead of condemning them with the laws.

“The correct tone is that of the confessor who is prepared to repeat it 70 times seven,” he said.

Relationship Talk: Must there be sex every time I visit my boyfriend?

The 5 worst places to make love with bae

He wants to sleep with me any time l visit him but I don't want to. What do I do?

Hello,

My boyfriend wants to have sex with me anytime l visit him but I don't want to.

What should I do?
____________

Dear reader,

That’s not a relationship for you APPARENTLY.

Here is someone who wants a sexual romantic relationship and all you want is just a romantic relationship. Doesn’t this look clearly like a mismatch?

If you do not want sex in a relationship, date someone who does not want sex, too; someone who is willing to wait till marriage like you. That way, you won’t be having these issues.

I think you are also running the risk of something unsavory by visiting him when you know he’ll surely ask for sex and you do not want sex. There is a risk of rape here. Avoid that by not remaining in private places with him. Obviously that means you should stop going to his house.

And this creates another set of problems. How are you supposed to be in a relationship with someone and not be able to visit him in his apartment?

In essence this is a fundamentally faulty relationship. You and that man need to sit down and ask each other frank questions and make real, tough decisions.

You should allow him the opportunity of speaking honestly. That means you don’t throw tantrums or try to emotionally blackmail him for saying his mind.

If it turns out that he really still wants a sexual relationship, end the relationship unless you are ready to break your oath of celibacy.

For future relationships, always ask this and other sex-related questions before getting into it. If not, you’ll keep finding yourself in these situations.
______________
Do you want to talk about your love life, marriage or family issues?

Erotic Story: The surrender [Episode 3]

He looked extremely Gothic, yet good looking.

…she couldn't get over his looks. He looked like a devil and an angel at the same time. He's beginning to grow on her.

His voice whispered huskily in her ears. And before she knew it, he grabbed her and pulled her on his thighs.

The prince made her breath catch..

His voice whispered huskily in her ears. And before she knew it, he grabbed her and pulled her on his thighs.

"I want to sample your cunt, but you've committed a mistake that will cost us," the sinfully delicious voice muttered. She shivered at the sound and turned to see his face.

His face was a kaleidoscope of scars…

He looked extremely Gothic, yet good looking. Half his face had slashes down to his neck and the other half was sinfully gorgeous. That was the initial reason for her resenting the marriage.

How could she feel complete with a man looking like two sides of different coins?

Right now, the other half was turned towards her and she couldn't get over his looks. He looked like a devil and an angel at the same time. He's beginning to grow on her.

His face was all sharp angles and his brows was full and perfect on one side, while the other was singed as if a fire burnt it off.

He smiled wickedly and then frowned….

That sent a shiver of fear through her. "You stink of that bastards' cum. Come take a bath." he dragged her towards an outhouse.

And he didn't bother to turn his back. As she moved to protest, he silenced her with a glance that sent shivers up her spine. His gaze was scorching.

She quickly took her bath and he roughly dragged her to his room. He called for a servant and a woman rushed in quick.

"Get my wife a wool cloth. She shivers and i need her warm." The maid rushed to do his biding.

She couldn't help to think if he's ever fucked the maid….

The maid brought in a wool cloth and she hastily wrapped it around herself. He advanced on her and she took several steps back. He smiled and she could feel the joy her fear gave him. She couldn't deny the thrill that ran through her too.

There's no escape. His fingers ran around her body and gripped her tightly. "There's no escaping me, anymore. You love me, even with my imperfections.." he grinned.

He stood up and a lavicious glint roared around him. "Time to fuck." he said simply.. A slam of lust made her knees buckle. She wants this powerful man. He pulled out his member.

It was monstrous and thick, with a dripping bead of moisture escaping the tip, that drew her attention.

He noted her riveted attention to the bobbing length and he grinned with pride. “Like what you see?” Yes! The word screamed in her head but she simply smiled.

The fire of lust consumed her and she was ready to succumb…

He pressed his mouth against hers, jabbing his tongue in as he pressed against her. She kissed him back, dueling with his tongue without reservation, desire and lust clouding her logical mind.

He was rough in his touch but she didn’t care. A low growl rumbled from his chest as he squeezed her breasts hard enough to leave a bruise.

The nipples were reddened and aching, needing to be handled and sucked. He pinched the tips meanly and she shuddered against him.

He dipped his long finger inside her, testing her slick passage and withdrew only to pop it into his mouth, tasting her. “Sweet like honey,” he said.. Arousal clouding his voice. Suddenly, his touch gentled.

He showered her body with kisses and she was on a different cloud, having never experienced tenderness like this.

He gently licked her body and rove his tongue all over her, making her sing. This was far better than what she experienced with the other slaves. This is what it felt like to be touched and appreciated. This is what love feels like.

And by the time he entered her- her asshole of course, she's fallen more in love.

Short Story: The broken vase

Say no to violence and child abuse…

A shocking shatter of the ceramics engulfed the room, and on impulse her mother zoomed into the room like “The Flash” to find her most precious vase, in pieces.

With a heavy thud, it struck itself down to the floor of Amaka’s living room.

A shocking shatter of the ceramics engulfed the room, and on impulse her mother zoomed into the room like “The Flash” to find her most precious vase, in pieces. In the context of reality, Ngozi should have known that “the value of an object is magnified by the person wielding it”.

Abusive Correction

Without considering what could happen, she pushed her daughter so hard with a heavy spanking on the shoulder. I’m sorry mommy! The daughter screamed frightfully, but her mother wasn’t accepting any of it. Like a loosed wolf on the night of a full moon, she pounced on the girl and continued to hit her till she could hit no more.

You better stand up from there right now! In fact, go get the broom and clean this place up. She instructed and went back to the room. A breeze of silence echoed her angry voice over and over until she paused to listen in, it felt like a sepulchre in the desert. Not even a buzzing fly could perch on any part of the environment, as if no life has ever inhabited. Then she remembered Amaka! Ngozi then proceeded to peep through the glass window so as to observe whether or not Amaka was finished with the cleaning.

Amaka’s Bio

Although, Amaka never knew her dad till she was 5 years old. Her mother got pregnant out of wedlock, and as a first child she was thrown out of the house for bringing shame to the family. Amaka was later handed over to her dad right after her mother passed away 8 years ago. Before the event took place, Amaka’s father was already happily married to Ngozi. And as it stands, Ngozi is yet to have a child with him even though she’s a mother to two other kids.

Being unable to bear kids with a man and suddenly, a child surfaces from somewhere? I suppose some women won’t be thrilled with that kind of change either. But in this case, Ngozi cooked up so much bitterness and resentment towards Amaka, thereby obstructing her sense of realization to the fact that Amaka is just a child.

Amaka! Amaka!! Amaka!!! This stupid girl thinks I’m joking abi?

I will deal with her in this house……. Why are you not answering me? Silly girl!

In that manner she rushed in through the door, to her greatest awe, there she was.

The little girl, laid helplessly on the cold somewhat shiny floor, in her own pool of blood.

Lost in trance

For the first time in her entire life, Ngozi had no clue on what to do. Time was slowly dashing away and Amaka was still bleeding. Ngozi decided to run to the neighbours’, but not a soul was present in the hood. Things were gradually getting sour, the little girl was starting to become clouded in pale white skin.

Ngozi was nowhere to be found…..!! Her dumbfounded soul could not fathom that which befell her…oh, what a shame this is, Ngozi’s uncontrolled emotions hath finally rewarded her with a slap from the furnace of reality. This was hard-core reality….no turning back….it is over….and so she ran away as the wind of guilt chased her through…

The floor of the living room was married with floral tiles. And mixed with it was the almost lifeless body of Amaka shivering and gasping for air. Amaka couldn’t cry no more, neither could she move, for she’d been pierced by a piece of the broken vase. And all that was left for her, was that moment in trance……so, she wept from the bottom of her innermost being, calling out to her saviour.

Save me! Dear God, I beseech thee! Please save me, for I need not die vain…..

To be continued……..

Stand up for a mistreated child…

Say no to violence and child abuse…

Be the voice behind the muted and the frightened…

Humanity is worth everything…..

PDP Will Never Return To Power, Tinubu Boasts

Tinubu

Lagos – A siwaju Bola Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State and national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), on Thursday hit at Nigeria’s major opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying the party would never return to power.

Tinubu, who made the remarks while speaking at the 10th Bola Tinubu Colloquium, an event held to mark his 66th birthday, also urged Nigerians not to accept the apology offered by the PDP earlier this week.

He said the APC would continue to talk about how the party mismanaged the country’s wealth in the last 16 years in order to enlighten Nigerians.

Speaking on the performance of the ruling party so far, Tinubu, who claimed that the party never said fundamental and sustainable reforms would be easy, added that the party, under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari, had judiciously maximised the scarce resources of the country by investing in the electorate who voted the party into power as evidenced in the social investment programmes of the Federal Government.

“When we came in, we came in with a whole lot of hope as APC leaders, several discussions with diplomatic corps, with foreign dignitaries, putting heads together, thinking and believing in ourselves that we can change Nigeria for good.

“We were strongly determined that we will do it. We gave our people the confidence and the hope. We believe in ourselves. We believe in Nigeria and we are still going to do it.

“Life is not interesting without challenges. We didn’t come as a political party showing our logo as honey and sugar.

“Our logo is broom, bunched together, united Nigeria focuses against terrorism, corruption, and promote economic revival of the country, investing in people.

“I can see what the government is doing with so little but they are clever. The fact that they are doing it, the fact that there are beneficiaries, the fact that it is demonstrated in practical terms, is what we need to get our country from the throat of corrupt officers.

“They said don’t talk about it. What should we talk about? That we came in to play chess. We saw your thievery and stealing and looting and we say ‘okay, you can continue the same way, let’s join you. It is because we are against you. We won’t encourage you. And if we are not talking about it, what is the lesson to all Nigerians. Forget those parties, they won’t come back.

“There is no nation without challenges. Even America is facing challenges.

“We didn’t say we will not be challenged, but we have to report to millions of Nigerians who voted for us that this is what we find and we are not going to keep silent, no matter how twisting the minds of PDP and their supporters may be.

“We will keep talking about it. You looted, you wasted our resources. You did not do what you promised.”

Tinubu also took a swipe at former President Olusegun Obasanjo over his recent letter castigating the performance of President Buhari.

Describing Obasanjo’s letter as ‘bad belle’ letter, he said he would address the issues at a later date.

He also frowned at those comparing the APC to the PDP, saying the difference between the two parties is like night and day.

“Thank you Nigerians for being patient with us. There is a clear understanding here. There is a difference between us and them; night day.

“I want the Economic Minister to give us a data first quarter of year 2012 and for their 16 years.

“I remember my grandmother used to send me to a letter writer at the Post Office of those days and at the magistrate court.

“So, somebody who is writing letter these days, a letter of politics – as if they’ve never been there before. Bad belle letters. I don’t want to address that for today.

“I am happy the president has changed the course of this ship wreckage, the ship of this country that is headed in a wrong direction.

“To steer the ship back on anchor before the final crash. It was but necessary and we started this journey.

“The voyage is on. The voyage of hope, the voyage that we are reclaiming Nigeria.

“We are retooling Nigeria, we are reinventing Nigeria, we are redirecting Nigeria. It is not an easy course to embark on.

“Dear Nigerians, don’t take their apology. They lied, they falsified, they changed figures.

“For 16 years, they made false promises, gave us fake figures and they said don’t talk about it.

“It is like when you catch a thief and he says, ‘don’t look at me, go and steal your own’.

“We are not taking that. We have a nation to rescue. We have a good leader to emulate, we have hope,” he added.

In his remark, President Muhammadu Buhari described Tinubu as a humanitarian and political strategist who had invested in a lot of people and was committed to the progress of the country and Africa.

“I am happy to be here with you to celebrate with you the birthday of my friend…, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“I call on all Nigerians to join me in celebrating this man. Asiwaju is widely known as a political strategist.

“I call on Nigerians to join me to celebrate Asiwaju, a man who is widely known as a political strategist and I have come to see him as a man who cares about people and is a fountain of ideas for the economy and for the common man and woman.”

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo in his address said he was proud to have garnered experience in public service under the tutelage of Tinubu when he was governor of Lagos State.

He noted that it was during that period the foundation of development currently ongoing in Lagos was laid.

He particular alluded to the concept of the Land Use Charge which Tinubu’s administration initiated, saying that despite the challenges and dissenting voices, he (Tinubu) successfully defended it, a move which, according to him, made Lagos better for it.

In his welcome address, Governor Ambode said Tinubu’s era as governor of Lagos, from 1999 to 2007, showed the depth of his governance capacity, adding that he had over the years sustained his relevance in the nation’s polity.

“After his gubernatorial years, he has continued to show pivotal leadership, particularly on the national stage.

“It is not for nothing that he is acknowledged for his defining role in the emergence of a progressive political party in Nigeria,” the governor said.

He said there was no better birthday present that his friends and well-wishers could give to him as befitting what the theme of this year colloquium has epitomised, saying that Tinubu’s legacy was built around his capacity to invest in people.

The event, which held at the Eko Expo Hall of the Eko Hotel and Suites, had in attendance state governors, members of the National Assembly, members of the diplomatic corps, traditional rulers, political and religious leaders and several dignitaries too numerous to mention.

Conspicuously absent, however, was Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, embattled National Chairman of APC; Bukola Saraki, Senate President, who was represented by Senator Ahmad Lawan, Majority Leader of the Senate, and Yakubu Dogara, Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Senate rejects $350 million Kaduna loan request

Members of the Nigerian Senate PHOTO: TWITTER/ NIGERIAN SENATE

• SERAP urges legislators to return illegal allowances

Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s request to secure a $350 million World Bank loan for Kaduna State was yesterday rejected by the Senate. It said the state government already has an existing backlog of $231 million debt with a low Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) status. The upper chamber added that if the new loan request was granted, Kaduna would be the most indebted state across the country.

It further cautioned the presidency and other relevant agencies and ministries not to circumvent the provisions of the extant debt management act.Chairman, Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts, Senator Shehu Sani, reading the report at plenary also affirmed that the state government has not even convincingly shown how the loan will be judiciously used and beneficial to the people of the state.

Suffice it to say that none of the three senators from the state supported the loan request as they took turns in expressing their disapproval.Sani, who represents Kaduna central, said if the request is granted, the state’s debt stock will rise to $582.1 million.

Supporting the resolution, Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi representing Kaduna North said the loan should not be approved because it would increase the financial burden of state and that the reasons for the request sent to the World Bank were not in tandem with the purpose for which the loan was sought. He further emphasised that the loan request for the Kaduna Development Policy Operation (DPO) was a misplacement of priorities.

Senator Danjuma La’ah representing Kaduna South also said the loan request lacks the mandate of his constituents. But deputy Senate Leader, Bala Na’Allah, averred that it was a lesson for democracy, particularly with governors who refuse to consult with their people and representatives before seeking such massive loan approval.

Presiding Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, in affirmation said, “a loan application for infrastructural development is not bad in itself but the failure to consult with representatives of the people before application was clearly undemocratic.”

In another development, the upper chamber condemned the fresh killings of not less than 66 persons in Zamfara State on Wednesday night.Though unconfirmed reports put the number of casualties at 66 and 15 but women and children were mostly affected.

Senator Kabiru Marafa representing Zamfara central senatorial district said the killings took place within his constituency and beyond. He lamented that young married women were forcefully separated from their husbands and gang-raped with impunity.

Meanwhile, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), yesterday urged members of the National Assembly to return voluntarily running costs and other allowances so far collected, and now declared as illegal by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).The call was predicated on the recent declaration by RMAFC that the N13.5 million each senator reportedly collects monthly as running cost
was illegal.

Each member of the House of Representatives also reportedly collects N10 million monthly as running cost.According to the commission, the payment is not covered by the Certain Political, Public and Judicial Office Holders (Salaries and Allowances) (Amendments) Act 2008 governing emoluments of political office holders in the country.

But SERAP in a statement by its deputy director Timothy Adewale urged the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara to “persuade their members to voluntarily return the amount so far collected.’’The group also urged them to use any returned funds to establish a trust fund to improve investment in education and health.

Senators’ jumbo pay: Law must take its course — Lawyers, CSOs

Super Eagles: Who has boarded the plane to Russia, who has checked in and who has booked his flight

Super Eagles

Which player will be in Super Eagles squad for 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia?

So the international break is over and the Super Eagles players are back to their respective clubs after two friendly games, their 1-0 win over Poland and the 2-0 loss to Serbia.

Although few players were missing, Super Eagles boss Gernot Rohr has had the opportunity to assess his players in training sessions and the two friendly games against Poland and Serbia.

Rohr will next see his men together in May and by that time, he would have already submitted a provisional list of 30 to 35 players to FIFA-latest May 14- which will be cut down to the final 23 latest by June 4.

It is indeed now obvious that the just concluded international window was the last opportunity for players to impress Rohr.

Rohr already has 90% of his 2018 World Cup squad already sorted with the rest to be decided from the friendly games against Poland Serbia and form before the end of the season.

So in this piece, we look at the state of all the players ahead of the 2018 World Cup with regards to who will be in Rohr’s list.

On board the flight

Players who have boarded the flight are the ones who will undisputedly be on Rohr’s final list.

Ikechukwu Ezenwa

Played in the last four 2018 World Cup qualifiers and one of the regulars under Rohr.

Francis Uzoho

Gatecrashed the Super Eagles after qualification to the 2018 World Cup and has now played three games. Recent developments have suggested that he will Super Eagles first choice goalkeeper at the World Cup.

Daniel Akpeyi

Has played just twice under Rohr but has been a regular call-up. With three slots available for goalkeepers he should be on board bar any unforeseen circumstance.

Abdullahi Shehu

Played in all the games during the 2018 World Cup qualifiers and has been involved in all the friendly games also. Earned his place in the team and is now trusted by Gernot Rohr.

Brian Idowu

Found his way into the flight with a series of fine performances for the Super Eagles. Just three games in and it’s looking like he will be Super Eagles first choice left back in Russia.

Wilfred Ndidi

On the flight. No comment here.

Ogenyi Onazi

One of the senior players in the Super Eagles, he is already on the flight.

John Ogu

A regular name on Super Eagles lists and has impressed whenever he gets the chance. Already on the flight to Russia.

Mikel John Obi

The flight to Russia is going nowhere without the captain. Salute captain!

Oghenekaro Etebo

A regular in the Super Eagles, Etebo has been in the squad for all of the World Cup qualifiers under Rohr. His status as an international has grown so much since his impressive outing for Nigeria’s U-23 at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.

Victor Moses

One of Nigeria’s best players at the World Cup qualifying campaign. Few words needed here, Moses is on the flight already.

Kelechi Iheanacho

One of Nigeria’s most popular players, Iheanacho is guaranteed a place in the team.

Alex Iwobi

Regarded as one of the futures of Nigerian football. Has had a prominent role under Rohr and scored the goal that sealed Nigeria’s place in Russia.

Odion Ighalo

Not initially fancied by Rohr, Ighalo has played himself into the team and is on the flight already.

Ahmed Musa

Already has experience of playing at the World Cup and can be very explosive on his day.

Moses Simon

One of the players who has been consistent for the Super Eagles.

Checked in already

These players are very close to getting on the plane. Competition the only thing preventing them from getting on the plane.

Ola Aina

Got his first call-up to the Super Eagles in August 2017 and has been in the squad ever since. Played some games but the intense competition in the Super Eagles fullback position has prevented him from getting on the plane.

Tyronne Ebuehi

Ebuehi has impressed in Super Eagles shirt and got his chances in this international break. Looks like he has gotten the trust of Rohr but that has not been enough to get on the plane yet despite booking his flight and checking in.

Elderson Echiejile

An ever-present figure in the Super Eagles but injury and loss of form has delayed him from getting on the flight. Was on the bench all through during the last international break. Flight booked, he has checked in and waiting at the airport lounge.

Chidozie Awaziem

Has been a regular call-up under Rohr and seems to have gained the trust of his manager who has made him the third-choice central defender just behind the ‘Oyinbo Wall’. There are however still doubts about his abilities.

Joel Obi

His fine form was rewarded with a call-up to the recent friendly games and he played in both. Now booked his flight and there is a feeling that he can check in and further make the flight. He is, however, running out of time.

Kenneth Omeruo

Another player with a World Cup experience but has drastically fallen off the radar due to his inconsistent performances. It doesn’t seem he is rated by Rohr and has rarely been given a chance. The experience of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner has however somehow gotten him past the checking point.

Mikel Agu

Another player who has been regular in Rohr’s squad and has gotten just enough chance to get past the checking point.

Flight booked

These are players who have played some parts in the qualifying campaign and stands a chance of being called up in the event of insane form or injury to other players.

Dele Alampasu

Has not been in the squad since the Zambia game in October 2017. Will be hard for him to get into the squad. Maybe an injury to the other goalkeepers will get him on the plane. For now, he has just booked his flight.

Uche Agbo

A couple of call-ups Agbo is always ready for the Super Eagles.

Kingsley Madu

Another player who has been called up a couple of times.

Brown Ideye

More than a year since he was called up to the Super Eagles. Played in one game during the World Cup qualifiers and was in the squad twice.

Isaac Success

Injuries and loss of form have prevented the forward from being part of the Super Eagles. Might get a chance if he is successful in Spain.

Oladele Ajiboye

Was a surprise he wasn’t called up for the friendly games after his impressive performance at the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Kayode Olarenwaju

Invited a couple of times but is running out of the chance to even check in.

Henry Onyekuru

One of the best Nigerian players of 2016/2017, Onyekuru is one of the most exciting young players. Has not been in action this year because of a long-term injury and racing against time to check in.

Anthony Nwakaeme

Was invited to a couple of games and got some action in just one game during the qualifiers. He has lost his form and was not invited to the recent friendly games.

Junior Ajayi

Made his debut in the game against Serbia and might make a surprise check in.

Gabriel Okechukwu

Gotten another chance with the Super Eagles but checking in for the World Cup might be too much of a task for him.
