Amazon Aims To Make Alexa Assistant Bigger Part Of Users' Lives

From the kitchen to the car, Amazon on Thursday sought to make its Alexa digital assistant and online services a bigger part of people’s lives with an array of new products and partnerships.

Updates to the internet giant’s Alexa-infused Echo smart speakers will allow them to tend to microwave cooking and even have “hunches” regarding what users may want or have forgotten.

When Alexa is told “corn on the cob,” a digital Echo speaker starts an AmazonBasics microwave oven in a faux home demonstration room, setting the preferred time and voicing what it is doing.

But when asked to add 30 seconds, Alexa pauses and then starts to play songs by the band Thirty Seconds to Mars.

Alexa voice search. Photo: Vital Design

Such misunderstandings are routine enough with smart speakers that they have become fodder for humour, and even cropped up while Amazon devices and services senior vice president David Limp showed off new devices in a nearby building a short time earlier.

Alexa has gotten smarter, more conversational and even intuitive during the past year as Amazon teams work hard on getting the digital assistant to better understand people, according to Limp.

Beer, pets and music

Alexa is even developing a personality, complete with a favourite pet or beer.

It has also learned to understand whispers, responding in equally hushed tones in a feature to be rolled out in the coming weeks.

Amazon teased a coming feature called Alexa Hunches that is designed to infuse the digital assistant with intuition. For example, when a user bids Alexa a good night, it might respond by mentioning they forgot to lock a door.

Alexa uses artificial intelligence to identify patterns in the lives of users, factoring in weather, time of year and more. To know what is happening with other smart devices in a home, the Echo speaker needs to be connected to them.

Amazon recently passed the 20,000 mark for smart home devices made by the Seattle-based company or partners.

“We are really at a tipping point for the smart home,” Limp said while unveiling an array of new devices.

An overhauled Echo Dot smart speaker boasts much-improved sound and design while keeping the $50 price tag of the original.

Amazon added Echo equivalents of stereo components for home sound systems, along with improvements to its online music service.

Limp unveiled a “frustration-free setup” platform intended to grow into a framework that any smart device maker can use to make getting gadgets to talk to Alexa as easy as plugging them into outlets.

“That is not going to happen overnight,” Limp said. “As we imagine a future that has thousands of these devices in your home, this is going to become absolutely essential.”

And, of course, there was the $60 microwave, which Limp contended was a strong test because of how much microwaves interfere with wireless connectivity used by devices to communicate.

“Amazon is doubling down on its strategy of integrating Alexa far and wide into appliances, consumer electronics and cars,” CCS Insight research vice president Geoff Blaber said at the event.

Guarding homes

A freshly announced Alexa Guard service synchronizes with Echo speakers in the home and motion detectors from Amazon-owned smart doorbell maker Ring.

When Echo speakers are set to guard mode, they listen for breaking glass or the sound of alarms from smoke or carbon dioxide detectors and send alerts to smartphones or even security companies.

Ring cameras can also be connected to Echo devices with screens, letting people see who has come calling, demonstrations showed.

A new Echo Show device boasted twice the screen display area as its predecessor and Fire TV Recast that acts as a digital recorder for traditional television broadcasts.

Not satisfied with being built into new cars, Alexa will be able to work in older models with an Echo Auto device that can be affixed to dashboards and reach the internet through smartphones.

“Amazon launched today what I believe is the industry’s largest assortment of home automation products and added meaningful improvements to its services,” said analyst Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights and Strategy.

Amazon has been moving fast in the race against digital assistants fielded by powerhouse rivals Google and Apple to become the preferred way people interact by voice with artificial intelligence.

“Amazon’s announcements are sharp reminders to Apple and Google that Alexa has a significant lead that it is working meticulously to maximize,” Blaber said.

NAPS: Polytechnic students threaten to deal with JAMB for 'exploiting' admission seekers

How to prepare for 2019 UTME

National Association of Polytechnic Students gives JAMB Registrar three days to resign or reduce UTME fee.

The National Association of Polytechnic Students has asked the Registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, Prof  Ishaq Oloyede to reduce UTME registration fee or resign in three days.

The Polytechnic students body said they will shut down all JAMB offices across the country if the exam body fails to comply.

The threat is contained in a statement signed by the Senate President of its association Adekanbi Sunday.

The statement reads in part:

This is an attempt to sabotage the effort of the federal government under the leadership of President Muhammad Buhari.

‘In a delicate time like this when the federal government is doing everything possible to stabilize education in Nigeria, JAMB registrar as seen the avenue to extort Nigerian students by turning JAMB into a money-making venture.

Oloyede while addressing journalists after a computer-based promotion exam for JAMB’s staff in Abuja on Tuesday, August 28, 2018, said the agency’s fee is one of the lowest in the world.

Strategy: Israel's tech scene is growing so fast the country is called the 'Startup Nation,' but a local venture capitalist says it's in danger of losing its entrepreneurial edge

Itzik Frid is a longtime Israeli tech entrepreneur and the CEO of Takwin Labs, a startup incubator focused on Arab-led startups.

Itzik Frid, a longtime Israeli tech entrepreneur and the CEO of a startup incubator focused on Arab-led startups, believes that the country will lose its edge if it can't better integrate its Arab minority into the tech industry.

  • Israel is often called the "Startup Nation" due to the sheer number of entrepreneurs and tech companies in the country of 9 million people.
  • Itzik Frid, a longtime Israeli tech entrepreneur and the CEO of a startup incubator focused on Arab-led startups, believes that the country will lose its edge if it can't better integrate its Arab minority into the tech industry.
  • While Arabs make up 21% of Israel's population, they currently only make up about 3% of the tech workforce.
  • Frid believes that bringing more Arabs into the tech workforce could alleviate the massive wage gap the population faces and improve the Israeli economy.
  • This post is part of Business Insider's ongoing series on Better Capitalism.

Israel produces an impressive number of highly successful tech companies for a country with just 9 million people, from social navigation app Waze, which sold to Google in 2013 for $1.15 billion, to autonomous driving company Mobileye, which sold to Intel last year for a whopping $15.3 billion.

Israelis have long lovingly referred to the Middle Eastern country as the "Startup Nation," thanks to the sheer number of entrepreneurs building businesses there, particularly in cities like Tel Aviv.

But some, like Itzik Frid, a longtime Israeli tech entrepreneur and venture capitalist, think the country will lose its edge if it can't better integrate its minorities into the tech scene. Frid is the CEO of Takwin Labs, a venture capital firm and startup incubator focusing on Arab-led startups.

"Honestly I love Israel … but I'm so fed up with us being so self-content with us as 'the Startup Nation,'â€ Frid told Business Insider in a recent interview. "As much as we like to think ourselves as a 'startup nation,' everything in the startup scene is happening in the center of Israel."

Frid isn't the only one who thinks so. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development said in its 2018 report that Israel needs to better integrate its Arab-Israelis or risk economic stagnation and declining living standards for all of Israel.

While Arabs make up 21% of Israel's population, they currently make up only 3% of the workforce in the tech industry. And there is a huge wage gap between Jews and Arabs in Israel, with the average Arab making 58.6% of the average Jew in 2015.

Much could be done to close that gap and improve the Israeli economy, Frid said, by getting tech companies to hire and cultivate Arab talent.

"Put aside the fact that they are a minority and we need to encourage them, Israel’s economy would benefit by around $60 billion a year. If we need an incentive to do this, that’s one," he said.

The government has taken steps to remedy the issue. As part of a law called Resolution 922, a $4.3 billion five-year plan for the Arab sector passed in 2015, funding was increased for Arab business centers and accelerators and the government plans to invest $25.6 million in small and medium-sized Arab businesses.

The government has also pledged to fund 30 months of salaries for Arab employees if a company hires five or more people from that population. The Innovation Authority, the office charged with developing the science and tech industries, said it was expanding grant and support programs for Arab entrepreneurs.

Nearly all of the tech companies in Takwin's portfolio have received grants or seed funds from the Innovation Authority. The larger problem, as it is for most startups, according to Frid, is the funding companies need a year or two down the line.

Fixing that issue, and the larger issue of bringing more Arabs into the tech workforce in general, will likely come down to the industry as a whole doing more to hire and cultivate Arab talent and to provide more funding to Arab-led startups.

Osun election: INEC’s secret balloting curbed open vote buying – CSOs

INEC National Commissioner Festus Okoye Esq inspecting some Polling Unit in Ede South Local Government of Osun State<br />#OsunDecides2018. Photo/Twitter/ necnigeria

Two Civil Society Organisations monitoring the Osun governorship election on Saturday said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC’s) secret balloting had so far made it impossible for people to openly buy and sell votes.

The Executive Director of YIAGA Africa, Mr Samson Itodo, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the group was monitoring the election in 250 polling units.

Itodo said that so far,it was obvious that INEC took deliberate steps to ensure that the secrecy of balloting was not compromised .

“There were two things INEC assured the stakeholders of, first was the reconsideration of the polling units, the ballot box and the cubicle would be placed closer to each other.

.“The polling officials were carrying out voter education in the morning, especially on how to roll their ballot papers according to the election guidelines provided by INEC guidelines.

“So, INEC kept to its promise of secret balloting,.however ,there were still some instances where voters intentionally exposed their ballot, in fact one actually happened before me.’’

Itodo encouraged voters to stop doing that, because it would undermine the integrity of the entire electoral process .

He said that at the moment ,the group had not observed any vote buying or selling activity though it was still very premature to state anything .

The National Coordinator, Election Monitor, Mr Abiodun Ajijola, said that he had so far not witnessed nor heard of vote buying during the election .

Ajijola said that things were moving as planned except for one or two issues on card readers where it was not authenticating properly.

He said that a request was made and something was being done about it.

The groups, therefore, commended INEC for the conduct of the exercise, so far.

NAN reports that there are 3,010 Polling Units and 755 Polling Points spread across the three senatorial districts and 30 local governments areas of the state.

NAN also reports that although 48 parties are participating in the election, the frontline candidates are Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC); Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Iyiola Omisore of the Social Democratic (SDP).

Osun Election: 7 Things to know about governorship poll

Voting in Nigeria

Osun is voting for a new Governor. Here are quick facts on the race.

Pulse has been covering the Osun governorship election live from Osogbo, the State capital.

Here are a few quick things you should know about the vote.

1. Osun has a population of about 4million people. Of this number, 1,682,495 are registered voters.

On Friday, September 21, 2018, a day before the election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that 435,015 registered voters did not collect their PVCs.

What this means is that about 74 percent of registered voters cast their ballots today.

2. It’s been quiet and peaceful here so far. There are reports of thuggery and skirmishes in certain areas but not substantial enough to mar the exercise, at least at the time of filing this.

When Pulse spoke to eligible voters on the streets of Osogbo, Ede and Iwo, they sounded very excited about performing their civic responsibilities. Many voters had no problems standing in the early morning Osogbo rain just to cast their ballots.

3. There are 48 governorship candidates, 1,246,915 PVCs distributed, 3010 polling units, 332 registration areas, 30 local governments, 4,700 card readers and over 40 local and international observers in this election.

4. The major candidates in the race for Osun government house are Gboyega Oyetola (APC), Iyiola Omisore (SDP), Fatai Akinbade (ADC), Ademola Adeleke (PDP) and Moshood Adeoti of the (ADP).

5. The Osun governorship election will eventually be won by one of Adeoti, Adeleke, Omisore or Adeoti.

The PDP will likely win Ede. Adeoti and Adeleke will share the votes from Osun West. The APC may win in its strongholds of Osogbo, Ilesa, Olorunda.

Omisore has tremendous following in Ife and could sweep that part of the State.
