We’ll conduct more research on earth tremor ― FG

ResearchTHE Federal Government is to conduct further research and monitor earthquake-prone areas in Abuja and other parts of Nigeria so as to predict and forestall probable negative fallouts in future.

Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, disclosed this in his office while receiving the report from the Presidential Committee set up by the Federal Government on the recent earth tremor in Abuja.

He said it was high time Nigeria worked on its building code and materials used in housing construction in case tremor occurs in future, adding that the buildings and building materials should be such that could withstand any likely tremor.

Dr Onu said the inclusion of the Director-General of the Nigeria Building and Road Research Institute (NIBRRI) in the committee would be of immense benefits to the work of the committee.

According to him, the Director-General of NIBRR was included in the committee so that the right building Code and materials that would withstand future tremors can be suggested to the committee.

The minister thanked the committee for doing a thorough job by collecting data from all seismic centres, earthquake monitoring laboratory at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife and the centre for Atmospheric Research in Ayangba, Kogi State.

Earlier, the Chairman of the committee and DG, National Space Research and Development Agency (NARSDA), Professor Seidu Mohammed said Nigeria was now prone to seismic hazards following recent earthquake occurrence in kwoi, Kaduna State, Saki, Oyo State and Ibgogene in Bayelsa State all in 2016.

“Though these earthquakes may have been of low-magnitude, it is now certain that earthquake occurrence has become a potential hazard to the nation, he added.

Professor Mohammed alluded to the report conducted by Julius Berger on the geological, hydrological and geotechnical investigation for Abuja which identified Mpape as a Shear zone that is weak with several fractures and faults system.

He added that water extraction and recharge imbalance from aquifer was causing hydrological instability along the fractures.

The Chairman of the party in the state ,Alhaji Tunde Balogun told NAN that although he was present at the meeting ,he was not authorised to speak on the outcome.

“Yes,the GAC met today and made some decisions, but I will not speak on the outcome because I have not been asked to do so.

Porsche first German carmaker to abandon diesel engines

Employees work on the Porsche Macan sports utility vehicle assembly line inside the Porsche Leipzig GmbH factory, a unit of Porsche AG, in Leipzig, Germany.<br />Photographer: Krisztian Bocsi/Bloomberg

Sports car maker Porsche said Sunday it would become the first German auto giant to abandon the diesel engine, reacting to parent company Volkswagen’s emissions cheating scandal and urban driving bans.

“There won’t be any Porsche diesels in the future,” CEO Oliver Blume told the newspaper Bild am Sonntag.

Instead, the luxury sports car brand would concentrate on what he called its core strength, “powerful petrol, hybrid and, from 2019, purely electric vehicles”.

The Porsche chief conceded the step was a result of the three-year-old “dieselgate” scandal at auto giant Volkswagen.

VW in 2015 admitted to US regulators to having installed so-called “defeat devices” in 11 million cars worldwide to dupe emissions tests and obscure its much higher emissions on the road.

It has so far paid out more than 27 billion euros in fines, vehicle buybacks, recalls and legal costs and remains mired in legal woes at home and abroad.

Diesel car sales have dropped sharply as several German cities have banned them to bring down air pollution — a trend that Chancellor Angela Merkel was due to discuss with car company chiefs in Berlin later Sunday.

“The diesel crisis has caused us a lot of trouble,” Blume said, months after Germany’s Federal Transport Authority ordered the recall of nearly 60,000 Porsche SUVs in Europe.

City driving bans
Stuttgart-based Porsche in February stopped taking orders for diesel models, which it had sold for nearly a decade.

Blume said Porsche had “never developed and produced diesel engines”, having used Audi motors, yet the image of the brand had suffered.

He promised that the company would keep servicing diesel models on the road now.

Blume also defended diesel as a viable technology, which the broader VW group plans to keep using.

“I think modern diesel engines are highly attractive and environmentally friendly,” he said. “They will continue to be of great importance to the auto industry in the future.”

However, he added, “for us as a sports car manufacturer, where the diesel has traditionally played a subordinate role, we believe that we can do without diesel in the future.”

According to the paper, Porsche also faces new claims of having manipulated engines to produce a more powerful sound with a technique that was deactivated during testing.

Blume acknowledged that German regulators had pointed to irregularities in the 8-cylinder Cayenne EU5, affecting some 13,500 units.

The fallout from dieselgate has been wide ranging for Germany and its auto sector which employs some 800,000 people.

Courts are increasingly pressuring German cities to clean up their air, with a diesel ban on two major roads in Hamburg and city-wide exclusion zones for older vehicles coming into Stuttgart and Frankfurt to reduce harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions.

Consumers have reacted to the prospect of more bans by shunning diesel vehicles, sending its share of the new car market plunging from 46.5 percent in August 2015 to 32.6 percent last month.

The EU has meanwhile toughened emissions testing and car companies hope a flood of new battery-powered vehicles will help meet tighter fleet-wide CO2 targets that bite from 2021.

The German government hopes to see one million fully electric and hybrid vehicles on the road by 2022, up from fewer than 100,000 at the start of this year.

Blume said that the matching infrastructure was emerging, telling Bild that by late 2019, some 400 electric charging stations along European highways would allow drivers of battery-powered cars to “get across all of Europe”.

Here’s your first look at Desmond Elliot’s upcoming movie ‘That Which Binds Us’

Desmond Elliot does have time for filmmaking, even as he campaigns again to represent Surulere Constituency in the Lagos State House of Assembly. His last movie was the Michelle Dede-led romantic comedy June, which was decent enough by virtue of the sheer input of Dede. With the just-released trailer of his upcoming movie That Which Binds Us, and produced by Dayo Amusa, we get a look into how culture and tradition continue to stand as a justification for oppression in the society.

READ MORE: Prophet Tomi Arayomi issues a warning to the Nigerian Church ahead of the 2019 elections

Frankly, the trailer isn’t narratively cohesive, but thankfully there’s a bit of plot detail provided. That Which Binds Us follows the story of Toke Nwachukwu played by Uche Jumbo, who has to deal with her husband’s family who invade her home immediately after his death. There’s a scene wherein Toke firmly addresses her mother-in-law (Chinyere Wilfred) in a room filled with women in traditional attire. Also, Jombo as Toke wears some nerdy glasses in other scenes of the movie, which just feels slightly cosmetic.

Toke’s friends, and also her coping mechanism, are sisters Kike Shomorin (Mercy Aigbe) and Yewande Shomorin (Dayo Amusa). A squabble between the Shomorin sisters that involves fat-shaming had me a little confused. More to the point, Toke is diagnosed of an undisclosed illness in which she asks the doctor how long does she have to live. Perhaps it will all make sense when the movie hits select theaters on October 5th. Starring Toyin Alausa and Desmond Elliot, whose role in the movie isn’t clearly defined, you can check out the trailer below.

'Say no to China': Anger mounts in Zambia over Beijing's presence

Zambian President Edgar Lungu (L) meets and greets Chinese workers from Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC Intl) during a walk on September 15, 2018 on a major road in Lusaka, Zambia. China is the main investor in Zambia as it is in several other African countries and with its offers of "unconditional" aid, most public tenders are awarded to Chinese bidders. DAWOOD SALIM / AFP

“China equals Hitler” said the sign held up in the Zambian capital Lusaka by a protester opposed to Beijing’s tightening grip on the economy of the southern African nation.

The demonstrator, James Lukuku, who leads a small political party, was picked up by police and spent several hours in a cell reflecting on his one-man protest.

But he is not alone in opposing China’s growing presence in President Edgar Lungu’s Zambia and in particular its major programme of loans to Lusaka.

In fact his criticism echoes concerns shared by many across swathes of Africa and beyond, where some fear that China’s mega-projects risk leaving already fragile economies in even worse shape.

“I want to bring to the attention of the international community the Chinese influence and corruption in Zambia,” said Lukuku who wore a white T-shirt emblazoned with the slogan #sayno2China.

China is the main investor in Zambia as it is in several other African countries and with its offers of “unconditional” aid, most public tenders are awarded to Chinese bidders.

In Lusaka and across the country, China is busy constructing airports, roads, factories and police stations with the building boom largely funded by Chinese loans.

 ‘These criminal debts’
“China is about to take everything from Zambia. They have taken over our economy through these criminal debts. This government is contracting debts from China even without parliamentary approval,” said Lukuku.

Zambian public debt is officially around $10.6 billion but suspicions have grown in recent months that the government is hiding its indebtedness — as happened in neighbouring Mozambique, which in 2016 was forced to admit it had kept secret $2 billion of borrowing.

Fearing that Zambia might be in a similar position, the International Monetary Fund at one point delayed talks over a $1.3 billion loan deal.

The slump in the price of copper, Zambia’s leading export, has led to fears that Lusaka might even struggle to service its existing debt.

Lukuku and his supporters believe that the state is on the verge of handing control of the Zesco national electricity company, Lusaka airport and the ZNBC state broadcaster to China.

Stung by the criticism that he was selling out to China, Lungu has hit back at critics.

“I implore you to ignore the misleading headlines that seek to malign our relationship with China by mischaracterising our economic cooperation to mean colonialism,” Lungu told lawmakers recently.

‘The dominance of Chinese’
Finance Minister Margaret Mwanakatwe has also come out to insist that, in the first half of 2018, $342 million was paid in interest to creditors, of which 53 percent were commercial sector — and only 30 percent of which were Chinese.

But the country’s main opposition party has put China’s debt dominance at the forefront of its campaign to unseat the government.

Opposition figure Stephen Katuka warned against the “rate Zambia is entertaining Chinese nationals which are displacing Zambians through big financial offers”.

Katuka, who is the secretary general of the United Party for National Development, described the replacement of Zambian workers with Chinese labourers — as is customary on Chinese-run projects — as “a time bomb”.

“If this situation is allowed to degenerate, it may lead to aggression on foreign nationals,” he added.

There have been several high profile incidents of Chinese managers allegedly mistreating their Zambian workers.

“In some instances the Chinese are beating Zambians in places of work for simply failing to follow instructions,” said Katuka.

Typically reclusive, China’s ambassador to Lusaka Lie Jie was drawn into the growing furore to defend Beijing’s intentions.

“I feel strange when I hear we want to colonise Africa,” he told journalists recently, categorically denying that China was seeking to buy Zambia’s publicly-owned companies.

Economist and head of Zambia’s Private Sector Development Association Yosuf Dodia told AFP that Chinese investment should be seen as an opportunity not a burden.

“Zambia has been dominated by the West for 100 years… and we are seeing poverty all over the continent,” he said.

“The partnership level is around $10 billion — and that is good. There is no other country that offers those kinds of opportunities.”

The benefit of such vast investment is not always felt on the ground, however.

“I am not happy with the dominance of Chinese contractors. In the first place, the money that they get from these contracts is externalised and all that they return here are meagre wages,” said Edgar Syakachoma, himself a contractor.

“Let the government also give us the contracts so that they benefit Zambians.”

Victor Osimhen: Super Eagles forward scores first professional goal for Royal Charleroi

Victor Oshimen

Victor Osimhen was on target for his new club side Royal Charleroi Sporting in an away draw to Waasland-Beveren.

Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen scored his first professional goal for Belgian First Division A club Royal Charleroi Sporting Club in their 1-1 draw with Waasland-Beveren on Saturday, September 22.

The 19-year-old forward who joined Wolfsburg after his exploits at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup was yet to score in a professional goal after two years with the German club.

Osihmen who has been given game time since he joined Charleroi Sporting on loan from Wolfsburg opened the goals against Waasland-Beveren in the 19th minute of their league encounter when put through on goal by Adama Niane.

The host equalised through Nana Opoku Ampomah in the 51st minute as the game ended in a draw.

Osihmen happy with first goal

Speaking after the encounter Osihmen stated his delight to have scored his first goal for his new team in a statement on the club's website.

He said, "I am very happy to be able to score my first goal for my new team and I think I can be satisfied with the quality of my game.

"I really had good feelings for this first and after the red card Marco – who shot a lot of gambling until then – we thought we should all play for him, showing solidarity, I think we did it."

He also revealed that they created enough chances to win the encounter and tried to play to the instructions of their coach.

He said, "It is obvious that we had opportunities to take the three points, we had the ambition to achieve a very good result here. We tried to put intensity in our game and to respect the instructions of our coach.

"I think that my association with Adama (Niane) worked well tonight and that we understood each other well. We work a lot together, also during training, and our automation will only improve. "

He also went on to reveal how things are going at his new club and his admiration for Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho and Didier Drogba.

He said, "For my part, I observe and analyze the style of several famous attackers. To name only one, I would choose Didier Drogba. I'm inspired by his game, his performance and his mentality, to help me progress and I will do everything to achieve my goals, to be even better.

"Besides, I'm also a big fan of José Mourinho and I watch every game of Manchester United. It also contributes to the evolution of my attacker game.

"In two years, this is my first full match. The style of play is different from that of the Bundesliga and I still have to adapt. To do this, Javier Martos speaks to me a lot and his advice is very valuable to me.

"I was very well received in Charleroi and I really appreciated the coach's speech when I arrived. And I get constant encouragement from my family, it helps me and motivates me a lot."

Osihmen will hope to continue his exploits with Charleroi when they host Lokeren in their next league fixture scheduled for Saturday, September 29.

Britain’s Anthony Joshua retained his world heavyweight titles by inflicting the first stoppage defeat of Alexander Povetkin’s professional career with a ruthless seventh-round finish at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

A previously close contest turned in Joshua’s favour decisively when he sent the Russian crashing to the canvas with a straight right hand and left hook.

Povetkin gamely beat the count but Joshua piled in before referee Steve Gray stopped the contest at one minute and 59 seconds of the seventh round.

Victory saw Joshua extend his unbeaten professional record to 22 wins from 22 fights, with 21 knockouts, in front of a raucous home crowd.

“Povetkin is a very tough challenger and he proved it tonight,” Joshua told Sky Sports.

“I realised he was strong to the head but weak to the body.

“I got my knockout streak back, I found my right hand again.”

Joshua was putting his International Boxing Federation, World Boxing Association and World Boxing Organisation belts on the line against 39-year-old Russian challenger Povetkin.

This fight was the latest in a line of professional heavyweight title bouts, featuring the likes of Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and George Foreman, between two former Olympic champions, with Joshua having won gold in front of his home crowd at the 2012 London Games — eight years after Povetkin stood atop the podium in Athens.

Joshua, 28, had a significant height and reach advantage of several inches over Povetkin.

Friday’s weigh-in also confirmed a significant size difference, with Joshua tipping the scales at 17 stone 8 pounds (111.5 kilogrammes) compared to Povetkin’s 15st 12lbs.

This fight saw Joshua returning to the scene of arguably his greatest triumph, an 11th-round stoppage of former champion Wladimir Klitschko last year.

Klitschko was the only man to have previously inflicted a blemish on Povetkin’s now 36-fight record, with a points win back in 2013.

Joshua, born in nearby Watford but based in London, had been taken the distance for the first time as a professional in his last title defence — a unanimous points victory over New Zealand’s Joseph Parker in Cardiff in March.

The undercard of that fight saw Povetkin serve notice of his formidable punching power with a sickening knockout of Britain’s David Price.

Povetkin, who in 2016 was given an indefinite ban from boxing after testing positive for the banned substance meldonium that was later cut to a year, had insisted in the build-up he was a far stronger fighter than the one beaten by Klitschko.

– Povetkin pressure –
And the first round ended with Povetkin, stooping low, rocking Joshua with a right uppercut that drew blood from the champion’s nose.

Joshua, who said Thursday that “my well is deep, my heart can definitely go through hell and back”, was certainly being tested in the opening exchanges, although he did start to respond with some single-punch jabs.

And come the fourth round, Povetkin had a significant cut above the left eye.

Nevertheless, at the end of the sixth he was still in the contest only for Joshua to seal victory barely two minutes later.

But whether this win takes Joshua any closer to a fight with World Boxing Council heavyweight title-holder Deontay Wilder, who next fights Britain’s former world champion Tyson Fury on December 1, remains to be seen.

“My number one would be Wilder,” said Joshua, whose promoter Eddie Hearn has already booked Wembley for April 13, when asked about his next opponent.

“May the champion bring himself here and have a good old fashioned dust-up.

“All I want to fight is serious challengers. If Dillian (Whyte) wants to fight here he is also more than welcome.”

Joshua beat compatriot Whyte with a seventh-round knockout in December 2015 — his last fight before becoming a world champion for the first time

Whyte, who was among an estimated 80,000 crowd at Wembley, said of Joshua’s latest victory: “He was patient and took his time, he was jabbing to the body and then brought the right into play which caught Povetkin by surprise.

“Hopefully, it’s me next, I’m here and ready to fight.”

Morning Devotion: Tim Godfrey’s ‘Nara’ is the song we’re getting high on

Not a chemically induced high, mind. It’s Spirit-activated, fam. We’re keeping it holy on these streets. Since its release exactly 10 days ago, Nara is the song in everyone’s mouth, on virtually every Christian’s IG page and the views it’s racked up on YouTube already (809,942) testify to this.

Let’s make it a million, people.

Nothing gets Nigerians like a foreigner speaking one of our local languages. Perhaps this is why everyone’s in love. Hearing Igbo roll off Travis Greene’s tongue like a total Anambra native …charming. And the energetic dancing of our very own Nigerian Kirk Franklin and his team, ooooh my. You’ll find yourself bopping your head and stomping your feet in time to the beat. Before you know it, you’ll be breaking out in a Holy Ghost dance. 💃ðŸ½ðŸ•ºðŸ¾

Nara is a song of thanksgiving to God. If you’ve got the blues or you’re worried about the week ahead, just press play and lose yourself in worship. It’s the best antidote, you know (Ps 103:1-5; Phil 4: 6-7).
