I am not ashamed to call Buhari my friend – Umahi

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State

Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi has said that he is not ashamed to call President Muhammadu Buhari his friend despite belonging to the opposition People Democratic Party (PDP).

Umahi made the assertion on Friday night in Abakaliki during the quarterly media chat/ dinner as part of celebrations to mark the nation’s 58th anniversary and 22nd year of the state’s creation, noting that their relationship was beyond politics.

The governor remarked that the State Government would name the one and half kilometres glass tunnel it is constructing after Buhari as it would be one of the best in the world.

“I want to state that aside my wife, Buhari remains my only boss and should be respected by Nigerians because of his status as the president.

“Buhari as the president, is the symbol of the country just as the governor’s are mini-presidents in their respective states.

“The fact is that as a human being, he might not be doing everything correctly, but the citizens owe him prayers and understanding to lead the country aright.

“I have said repeatedly that I don’t have to insult him to show that I am a PDP member and it is not my duty as a governor to insult the president.

“This does not mean that I do not identify with the ideals of the PDP, but it must be stated that those who say they are supporting Buhari in Ebonyi are only deceiving the people, he said.

The governor noted that the opposition in the state was only interested in his job and not genuinely supporting the president, vowing not to allow them to take the position from him.

“The northern senatorial zone of the state produced a governor who served for eight years; the central zone did the same and the southern zone where I hail from should be allowed to complete its eight-year tenure.

“This is the tripod on which the state’s equity rests and even though a sitting governor wanted to truncate it, God brought a David in my person to ensure it was maintained and it will be maintained till the end, he said.

Umahi urged Nigerians to realise that power comes from God and to check the brazen quest for political offices which has brought several problems to the country.

“Politicking has recklessly taken the centre stage in the nation’s affairs and if such is not checked for the next four years, it would be difficult for the country to handle its consequences.

“The common man in the country just needs food on his table as politics has become a means of profiteering even from those who have nothing to offer to the people, he said.

The governor, who took time to enumerate his administration’s strides in the areas of infrastructure, agriculture, education, heath, human empowerment, among others, noted that his decision to modernise the state capital was irreversible.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that media practitioners from within and outside the state, took turns to ask several questions bordering on the state’ s existence and made general comments, at the occasion.

BREAKING: Buhari’s Minister, Aisha Alhassan resigns

Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Aisha Alhassan has resigned her office.

In a letter written to President Muhammadu Buhari, Alhassan made it clear that her reason to resign is connected to the party’s refusal to clear her to contest the gubernatorial election in Taraba under the platform of the party.

For her withdrawal from the All Progressive Congress (APC), Alhassan said she was “dismayed and disappointed” that the party failed to clear her, yet giving no reasons for her disqualification. She adds that she was unfairly treated and “grave injustice done” to her by that action.

The same reason was given for her resignation as Minister.

It was earlier reported that the All Progressive Progress (APC) failed to clear Alhassan, popularly called Mama Taraba, but no reason was stated in the list posted on the APC website.

Tuition: ASUU rejects N500k school fee proposal for public universities

ASUU is not happy with the creation of more universities

The FG negotiator has proposed that tuition fee in public universities be increased to N500,000 for undergraduates in sciences.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has reportedly rejected the proposed increment of school fees in Public universities by Dr Wale Babalakin, the negotiator between  ASUU and Federal Government.

Babalakin reportedly proposed that public universities tuition fee be increased to N350,000 for undergraduate students of Arts and Humanities and 500,000 for those in Sciences.

Addressing Journalists in Jos, Prof. Lawan Abubakar, the Bauchi Zonal Coordinator said the union has rejected the proposal by the Federal Government negotiator to increase tuition fee.

Abubakar said, “One of the major issues our union wishes to bring to public domain is the wild idea of sharing the cost of education between the government and parents proposed by Dr Wale Babalakin. This idea of sharing the cost of education since government alone cannot fund education, and that parents need to pay for it too.

“He proposed a minimum of N350, 000 as tuition fee for undergraduate students of Arts and Humanities, and N500,000, for those in Sciences.

“Our union rejected the proposal based on the fact that the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria clearly states that funding education is the sole responsibility of Governments at various levels and not parents.

ASUU also rejects Education Bank for Nigerian students

The union also reportedly rejected the idea of Education Bank for undergraduates. The negotiating team were said to have also proposed a loan of N1 million for undergraduates, every session to pay the tuition fee and sustain themselves.

Abubakar said, ''our union also rejected the idea of Education Bank, because for one, not all the students will have access to loan, and for those who will access the loan, it is the same parents who served as sureties and subsequently pay back the loan, considering the very high rate of unemployment in the country.

“Supposing that the student is able to secure a job after graduation, he cannot start a life while paying back a loan of 4 to 6 million Naira, as the case may be.

“In this kind of situation, the graduate would be subjected to, when will he finish paying the loan and establish himself?

“Frustration will gradually set in and make them live a life of misery

Flop of the Week: 81-year old Bill Cosby gets 3 to 10 years prison sentence

Bill Cosby sentenced to 3 to 10 years in prison

The disgraced veteran actor, who is known for 'The Cosby Show' has been called a 'Predator' by Amber Rose

You might know Bill Cosby. He is the 50-year Hollywood veteran known for shows like The Bill Cosby Show, The Cosby Show and Fat Albert and The Cosby Kids.

He is also a former stand-up comedian who was sentenced to three-ten years in prison on September 25, 2015 by Judge O'Neill who also refused him bail.

On his conviction, Judge O’Neill said, “This is a serious crime he was convicted for. This is a sexual assault crime, the judge said.

Continuing, he said, “No one is above the law, and no one should be treated differently or disproportionally.

“Cosby would be sentenced regardless of “who he is or who he was.

“I have given great weight to the victim impact testimony in this case, and it was powerful, O’Neill noted.

In April 2018, he was found guilty of three counts of aggravated indecent assault for drugging and sexually assaulting Temple University Administrator, Andrea Constand in 2004.

Cosby started unraveling around the mid-2000s when his rap sheet of sexual assault allegations made rounds — some dating back decades and decades.

Over 60 women accused him of rape, drug-facilitated sexual assault, sexual battery, child abuse, and sexual misconduct.

ALSO READ: How to deal with creeps on social media and dating websites

What would make a man this infamously prolific?

Although the Statute of Limitation had limited the actionability of a lot of these cases, it still created a narrative and established a pattern of Cosby’s history and habit of sexual impropriety.

Granted, we live in a phoney world where some of those allegations might not be true and the sex might have been consensual, but even 10 accusations is a lot, because that establishes a predatory pattern.

It is not okay. Only a man who feels terribly indestructible will do this, and it just goes to show how women were thought of as so inconsequential that a man would serially abuse some of them with so much vigour.

This modern world is no place for predators and whoever you are, you’re going to get this strap which you had coming.

Bill Cosby is a man who abused his privilege and standing. He’s the atypical man in a high place, doing terrible things with his privilege because of his access and reach.

It is not beyond thought that Cosby might have used his influence to kill some of these cases against him as rape and sexual assault have always been offences. Some of these women might have wanted to speak up earlier than they did.

Even though he was known for jokes, he has now become the joke as he has been for a number of years, unknown to us.

Bill Cosby is a sexual Predator and we don’t need any court conviction to know that. There is an established pattern. Even accusations from 5 women is a pattern, let alone 60.

NO, HE WAS CONVICTED BECAUSE HE'S A DISTURBED PREDATOR, NOT BECAUSE HE IS BLACK.

The man is rightly a “Predator as Amber Rose called him.

Bill Cosby, take this L.

Politics: A day after emotional Senate testimony, Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court confirmation seemed all but certain — until one powerful GOP senator got cornered in an elevator

Jeff Flake

Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court nomination seemed certain on Friday morning. But after hours of discussion among Republicans and Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee, the day ended in compromise, with Kavanaugh's confirmation delayed, and a presidential order for a new FBI investigation.

  • The morning after emotionally fraught hearings in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee looked like it would be business as usual, as members sought to move Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court nomination to the Senate floor.
  • Only 24 hours earlier, the senators heard compelling testimony from Christine Blasey Ford, the California university professor who accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault. Kavanaugh had delivered a tearful rebuttal himself that included an extended attack on Democrats he accused of trying to ruin his life.
  • The fallout was immense, but despite this, Kavanaugh's confirmation appeared to be a foregone conclusion Friday morning. That changed after Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona released a statement announcing that he would vote in favor of Kavanaugh.
  • Shortly after, he was cornered in an elevator by two women who shared their own stories as victims of sexual abuse. The entire emotional exchange was captured on live television.
  • Flake returned to the committee room where nearly two hours of hushed, bipartisan discussion began. Friday ended with President Donald Trump ordering the FBI to reopen its investigation into Kavanaugh.

Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court seemed like a foregone conclusion on Friday morning.

Only 24 hours earlier, members of the Senate Judiciary Committee heard compelling testimony from Christine Blasey Ford, the California university professor who accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her when they were teenagers in the 1980s.

Kavanaugh had delivered a tearful rebuttal himself that included an extended attack on Democrats he accused of trying to ruin his life.

The fallout was immense, but despite this, Kavanaugh's confirmation appeared all but certain. That changed after Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona released a statement announcing that he would vote in favor of moving Kavanaugh's nomination out of committee and onto the Senate floor.

Shortly after, he was cornered in an elevator by two women who shared their own stories as victims of sexual abuse. They said his vote for Kavanaugh would send a message to women and girls that "assault doesn't matter."

The entire emotional exchange was captured on live television.

Later, as Flake returned to the committee room, the mood shifted and nearly two hours of hushed bipartisan discussion began, led by Flake and his close Democratic counterpart, Sen. Chris Coons of Delaware, among others.

Flake offered his vote to move Kavanaugh's nomination out of committee if the leadership agreed to push for an additional FBI investigation of the nominee's background as it relates to Ford's sexual assault allegations and separate claims of misconduct from two other women.

"I've had a number of conversations with people on the other side related to doing our due diligence," Flake said. "I think it would be proper to delay the floor vote for up to, but no more than, one week in order to let the FBI continue to do an investigation limited in time and scope."

The Judiciary Committee leadership agreed, and later so did Senate leaders, giving federal investigators one week to reexamine Kavanaugh's background.

By Friday afternoon, President Donald Trump gave the order.

Passengers stranded as labour disrupts flight operations

Murtala Muhammed International Airport

Passengers yesterday were stranded at the Lagos airports as members of the organised labour paralysed fight operations over inability of the Federal Government to come up with a new national minimum wage for workers.

Labour officials, who arrived at Airpeace airline as early as 7a.m., chased all the flight attendants from the counter, preventing passengers from checking in.

Some of the passengers who spoke with The Guardian said their programmes for the day and weekend were disorganized. One of the passengers, Michael Ike, said: “My elder sister is wedding tomorrow at Imo State and I have made all necessary preparations to get to Owerri this morning, only for me to get to the airport to see that labour officials have disrupted flight operations.”

The President of National Union of Civil Engineering Construction, Furniture and Wood Workers, (NUCECFWW), Comrade Amaechi Asugwuni, said paralysing the nation’s activities was to enforce the position of National Executive Council (NEC) of all organs and labour centres in the country.

According to him, “Our strike action is gaining impact. We will not rest until the Federal Government does the needful.”The spokesman of Air peace, Chris Iwarah, told The Guardian that labour has no right to stop its workers from duty and passengers from flying, stating that labour has crossed the bounds of rights.

He said: “Our position is you have the right to protest but you don’t have the right to disrupt our operations, because what we are doing is completely a private business. What they are doing is completely illegal. We expect security agencies to arrest the situation, to ensure those going about their lawful duties are not harassed.”
On passengers whose flights were disrupted, he said, “many of them have rescheduled. What they have done has caused a lot of economic impact on our operations, as millions have been lost.”

Similarly, the labour group went to the Island where there is concentration of banks and workplaces. They shutdown their operations, and chased out some of the workers who refused to comply. At Polaris and Union banks at Marina branch, the workers were chased out of their offices and their gates locked as they dared to prevent labour officials from gaining entrance.

Corruption has eroded gains of independence struggle, says former aviation minister, Amechi

Mbazulike Amaechi

Foremost nationalist and first minister of Aviation, Chief Mbazulike Amaechi yesterday decried the country’s journey to nationhood declaring that it would be impossible for young people to rule without a change in the system. Mbazulike Amaechi said corruption and quest for money has eroded the gains and ideals behind the struggle for independence by the founding fathers, stressing that celebration of independence anniversary in the last 20 years evokes sorrow in him.

In an exclusive interview with The Guardian at his Ukpor country home in Nnewi, Anambra State, the nonagenarian stated that Nigeria as presently constituted was not the same as envisioned by the fore-fathers who laid down their lives.

Explaining that the ugly situation of the country had been compounded by vicious leadership, he said there was need to urgently review the system and remove it from the jaws of a few elements if the country must continue to survive. He said: “In the last 20 years or so, every October 1 has been a day of sorrow for me.  Sorrow because the house I helped to build has been pulled down or is being pulled down all these years… we made sacrifices and so on October 1,1960, we had the glory of seeing our country freed from Colonial Imperialism and freed from foreign rule by Great Britain. We were happy that the country was free.

“Six months after independence, an unpatriotic military conducted a coup-de-tat and overthrew a democratic government, imprisoned, scattered and sent away the nationalists, the founding fathers and the great heroes that brought Nigeria’s independence and founded Nigeria as a republic. The military could not manage the country because they are not trained. The military is trained to fight, to destroy, to conquer to loot and to steal. They are not trained to rule and govern.

“So within a few years, the military led the country into an avoidable civil war that lasted for three years. The Biafran side lost the war; but since then, Nigeria has not been the same again. He continued: “Since then, the country has not enjoyed true freedom and unity because the military took up the country, dissolved the existing institutions and instead of a true federation that the founding fathers established, they introduced a quasi system of government, whereby the states they created by military fiat, given a segment of the country. The military ruled the country for 39 years, doing what they know best. They introduced into the system massive looting, massive corruption and massive disorganization. Some of the things the founding fathers set up like the Ajaokuta Steel Company that should have produced iron for this country to boost economy of the country, they destroyed it. They stole everything in the Nigeria air wars; they sold the aircraft hanger that was established for the maintenance of the aircraft in Nigeria and for many other West African countries.

“Only Nigeria had aircraft hanger but the military sold everything. These things were going on, every year.“There is now the wealth of oil, the wealth of gas and everything was booming and so the groundnut pyramids, the Palm Produce Board of the East disappeared, the Cocoa Marketing board of the West disappeared because oil and gas were producing money.

Military shared the wealth of the country among retiring generals and so you find a retired Army general becoming a millionaire overnight and on full salary for life. So with the disappearance of the marketing boards and the arrival of money wealth, the generals shared the whole money and went back and handed government to civilians of surrogates and puppets. They nominated their surrogates to contest elections to occupy offices so that they will continue to plunder the country. Things degenerated to a level where the citizens of the country are suffering in abject poverty in the midst of plenty. There is wealth in the country; there are facilities, there is the manpower but nothing is functioning.

He said there was no political future for the upcoming generation of Nigerian youths going by the amount of money that now goes into politics.“The way it is, it is very impossible for young people to rule this country, unless this young person is sponsored by a money-bag, otherwise it will continue to be a dream. I pity them because I do not see them making any headway the manner the politics is structured for the rich. It does not matter which political party that has offered their platform or waved aside certain fees. Election proper is money.

“I succeeded as a young man, I was elected as a young man, I was given opportunity as a young man and I served the country as a young man.“Therefore I believe that young men, who can do it, should indeed be given opportunity to test their capacities and abilities, he said. He recalleded that he served as a Member of Parliament at the age of 29, through the sponsorship of his party at the election, adding that nomination was based on merit, ideology and principle.

Corruption has eroded gains of independence struggle, says former aviation minister, Amechi

Gov. Hassan Dankwambo of Gombe has promised to tackle the challenge of insecurity confronting the country if elected president in 2019.

Dankwambo, who is aspiring to be president on the platform of the PDP, made the promise on Friday in Makurdi, during a consultancy visit to Gov. Samuel Ortom.

He decried the rising rate of insecurity across the country, saying that Nigerians were at a loss over what was happening to their nation.

Dankwambo thanked the governor for the “bold step of defecting from the APC to the PDP, and commended Benue people for standing with their leader in his trying moments.

Responding, Ortom agreed that insecurity had remained a major challenge in the country, saying that Benue was worst hit by the incessant violence.

He urged leaders to live up to the responsibility of protecting Nigerians, pointing out that such role was the main purpose for the existence of government.

“As leaders, we are expected to give protection to the people. If we cannot do that, chaos will set in and our presence as leaders will be worthless, he said.

The governor lauded Dankwambo’s style of leadership, and promised to work closely with him if he became president in 2019.

Food wars: Scotch egg and egg roll: what's the difference?

Scotch egg and egg roll: what's the difference?

These two common Nigerian snacks are very similar, but to what extent?

In light of the egg roll recipe we rolled out, let's see the difference between scotch egg and egg roll.

Egg roll is more similar to Nigerian buns than scotch egg. It is made by deep-frying dough wrapped around a hard boiled egg. It is totally different from the Chinese egg roll.

Scotch egg on the other hand is made of seasoned mashed sausage meat, wrapped around a hard boiled egg, dipped in egg and bread crumbs.

The only similarities are that they are pastries that hold eggs in them and are fried.
