Buhari: President congratulates China on 69th Anniversary

In a congratulatory letter personally signed by him, President Buhari extended warm greetings and felicitations to the Chinese on behalf of the people and Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated President Xi Jinping of the Peopleâ€s Republic of China, on the 69 anniversary of the founding of the Peopleâ€s Republic.

In a congratulatory letter personally signed by him, President Buhari extended warm greetings and felicitations to the Chinese on behalf of the people and Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Mr Femi Adesina†the Presidentâ€s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity in a statement in Abuja on Saturday, said Buhari also praised China for the achievements in recent years and blossoming relations with Nigeria.

President Buhari said: ‘‘I seize this opportunity to congratulate you on the laudable economic and technological achievements of your country in recent years and commend you for sharing the fruits of your success with so many countries in Africa and around the world, thereby positively transforming the lives of millions.

“The Peoples†Republic of China is Nigeriaâ€s valued partner in progress. We have cooperated extensively in the fields of trade, technology, security, infrastructure, and human development. 

“While looking forward to an even deeper and more beneficial relationship, you have our best wishes as you celebrate your 69th anniversary.â€â€

Meanwhile, the Chinese leader had also congratulated President Buhari on the 58th Independence anniversary of Nigeria, slated for Monday.

Nigeria and China share the same date as their National days.

In his congratulatory letter, President Xi Jinping praised President Buhari for stabilizing the country.

“Under the leadership of your Excellency, the Nigeria people have been committed to safeguarding the nationâ€s stabilisation, development of economy and elevation of livelihood and achieved gratifying outcomes.

‘‘I would like to extend my appreciation and attribute the success of the recent Beijing Summit of the Forum on Africa-China Cooperation to your Excellencyâ€s participation and remarkable contribution.

‘‘I highly value the development of China-Nigeria relations and I am willing to join efforts with you to elevate the Strategic Partnership between China and Nigeria to a new level, for the well-being of our two countries and peoples.

‘‘I wish your esteemed country prosperity and fortune, and its people happiness and contentment,†President Xi wrote in his congratulatory message.

Spiritual Scammer: 19-year-old man strips 60-year-old woman for cleansing

Emmanuel made the confession during his trial at the Ejigbo Magistrates court, where he said he scammed and stripped his 60-year-old victim.

19-year-old Saheed Emmanuel has confessed to stripping a 60-year-old woman during an alleged spiritual cleansing.

According to a report by Punch, Emmanuel made the confession during his trial at the Ejigbo Magistrates court.

The 19-year-old admitted the charges against him and pleaded guilty.

He was, however, handed 2 years imprisonment without an option of fine for scamming the 60-year old woman by Presiding Magistrate, L.K.J. Layeni.

How Emmanuel stripped and scammed 60-year-old woman

Emmanuel had scammed and stripped the old woman naked under the false pretense of delivering from evil spirits.

Emmanuel, who met the victim in Ikotun area of Lagos state, claimed to be a spiritualist that can cure any form of ailment and affliction.

The victim told Emmanuel about her ailment, hence, opening her up for the 19-year-old to fleece her of the sum of N120,000.

Emmanuel had confessed to taking te victim to a river at the Badagry area of Lagos where, he asked her strip herself before commencing the spiritual cleansing.

The 'spiritual cleansing'

While the victim was naked, the 19-year-old allegedly fondled with her body parts that included her genitals during the 'spiritual cleansing.'

Despite the 'spiritual cleansing' the victim's health condition worsened and she knew she was scammed after which she informed her children who reported to the police station where Emmanuel was arrested and charged to court.

Party primaries: Politicians urged to play according to rules

AS the political parties conduct their primaries across the country, politicians and other players have been called upon to play the game of politics according to the laid down rules and regulations in order to ensure a peaceful and successful conduct of the primary elections.

The call was made by the Acting Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Gombe state, Adalyn Waye Patari in an interview with  Newsmen in Gombe.

Waye Patari said that abiding by the rules and regulations of the game was a step to successful primaries and electioneering campaigns as well as the outcome of the 2019 general elections.

The NOA Director said that “As we are approaching the parties†primary elections, I am appealing to the politicians to conduct themselves in a peaceful manner”.

She then advised political party leaders to sensitise their members and supporters on the need to eschew violence conduct before, during and after the exercise saying that, “So far, there was no problem between the supporters of different political parties like in 2015. So, I want them to continue in this direction”.

Waye Patari also called on the youth in Gombe state and the country at large not to allow themselves to be used as thugs by politicians who want power at all cost.

“Think of better things to do. Do not give any politician the chance to use you as an instrument of violence and be good ambassadors of your various communities and the country at large. I also want to advise the politicians to be responsible and play parental roles instead of destroying the future of our youths”, she advised.

Blast injures election candidate in Ukraine's rebel east

Three people were injured in an explosion in Ukraine’s rebel stronghold Donetsk on Saturday, including a candidate for the post of the self-proclaimed republic’s leader.

The incident took place just four weeks after the head of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) Alexander Zakharchenko was killed in a bombing at a cafe in broad daylight.

Saturday’s explosion happened near the local communist party’s offices as the last participants of a party congress were leaving the building, a DPR police officer told an AFP correspondent at the scene.

Igor Khakimzyanov, the party’s candidate for the post of the DPR leader, was among the wounded.

“According to some reports, Igor Khakimzyanov suffered burns when he was collecting signatures near the entrance,” Boris Litvinov, the 64-year-old head of the communist party said.

The place was immediately cordoned off by men in military fatigues.

The case is being handled by the DPR’s ministry of state security.

Zakharchenko, the 42-year-old head of the self-proclaimed DPR, was killed on August 31, with the rebels planning to hold a leadership election on November 11.

More than 10,000 people have been killed since the rebel insurgency broke out in the eastern Donetsk and Lugansk regions in April 2014 following Russia’s annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.

Kiev and its Western allies accuse Russia of funnelling troops and arms across the border.

Moscow has denied the allegations despite evidence it has been involved in the fighting.

APC Presidential Primaries: Buhari scores 472, 344 votes in Sokoto

Declaring the result on Saturday in Sokoto, the Chief Returning Officer, Sen. Aliyu Wamakko, said the exercise was hitch free and recorded massive turnout.

The 2019 Presidential Aspirant, President Muhammadu Buhari has scored 472, 344 votes in the direct presidential primary election conducted by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 23 local government areas of Sokoto state.

Declaring the result on Saturday in Sokoto, the Chief Returning Officer, Sen. Aliyu Wamakko, said the exercise was hitch free and recorded massive turnout.

Wamakko, who is the former Sokoto state governor, commended party loyalists on the peaceful conduct of the exercise, saying that the results were delayed in view of distance and terrains to the collection centre.

At the collection centre, which is the state party headquarters, Wamakko was assisted by state party chairman, Alhaji Sadiq Achida, Elders Committeeâ€s Chairman, Alhaji Maigari Dingyadi among others.

He listed the scores from LGAs, Sokoto South 36, 710, Wamakko 31, 941, Shagari 21, 920, Tureta 8, 779, Sokoto North 26, 787, Silame 13, 205, Raba 14, 705, Kebbe 15, 932, Bodinga 22, 188 and Isa 25, 010.

Others were Wurno 13, 243, Kware 17, 970, Binji 7, 478, Goronyo 20, 777, Yabo 11, 008, Tambuwal 23, 347, Tangaza 15, 079, Dange-Shuni 21, 024, Gwadabawa 26, 172, Illela 31, 692, Gada 27, 069, Sabon-Birni 31, 492 and Gudu 8,850.

More intrigues as Hamzat steps down for Sanwo-Olu ahead of Lagos APC guber primary

The story of who becomes the governorship flag bearer for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)  in Lagos, took a new turn on Saturday as one of the aspirants Obafemi Hamzat stepped down and endorsed fellow aspirant Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Hamzat renounced his decision to contest in the APC governorship primary election at a press briefing attended by Sanwo-Olu and other party members in Lagos.

This could pose a huge challenge for the incumbent governor Akinwunmi Ambode as the two aspirants have joined forces to defeat him in the APC primary.

According to reports, the national leader of the ruling APC Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has withdrawn support for Ambodeâ€s re-election in favour of Sanwo-Olu who was a former Commissioner of Commerce and Industry in the State.

The party leader however has been under intense pressure to have a change of heart after President Muhammadu Buhari and other state governors tried to persuade him to support the incumbent.

A member of the party in Lagos who pleaded anonymity insisted there is no going back on Sanwo-Oluâ€s ambition, unless Tinubu plans to self-destruct.

“It is political suicide for Tinubu to allow Ambode to go for a second term.

“This is because of the way the governor conducted himself and sidelined party members since he emerged,â€� he said.

Sanwo-Olu is also believed to have the backing of a grassroots structure of the party, Mandate Group, led by Tinubu.

The group, on different occasions maintained that Ambodeâ€s exit is a done deal, stressing that under a democratic setting, a President lacks the powers to dictate who becomes governor in any state.

Also, chairmen of 52 out 57 local councils in the state have endorsed Sanwo-Olu to be the party’s governorship flag bearer going into next year’s elections. The three in exclusion are the chairmen of Epe division of the state where governor Ambode hails from.

Some of Ambode’s alleged “sins” includes sidelining party elders and the advisory council in policies and affairs of the state since his emergence as governor in 2015.

Ambode was asked to step down to avoid the humiliation of a seating governor losing his partyâ€s ticket. A move which the Governor has shunned to declare his readiness to contest his return ticket for next yearâ€s election.

The ruling party’s governorship primary in the state is scheduled for Sunday, September 30.

Minimum wage strike: FG, Labour to meet ThursdayÂ

The Federal Government has agreed to reconvene the tripartite meeting on the proposed new national minimum wage, a key demand of the striking labour unions.

This is as the Presidency says it has stepped up efforts to convince labour unions in the country to call off their strike following the earlier meeting at which the government accepted their demand to reconvene the meeting.

The presidency confirmed that the meeting between the labour leadership and the representatives of the employers of labour is now scheduled to reconvene on Thursday 4th October.

A statement issued by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President, (Media and Publicity), in Abuja pointed out that by its tripartite nature, the committee is made up of persons from the public sector, (Federal and State Governments) and the private sector made up of the largest private employer group and the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA).

Other members include the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce Industry Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) and Nigerian Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMES).

The presidency revealed that Invitation letters have since been dispatched to all the participants.

The statement added: “At the moment, the Presidency understands that the combined leadership of the unions, having met and deliberated on the position of the government have now set in motion a process of consultations with their constituent members to determine their next line of action.

“The Presidency wishes to assure that the federal government is taking every step necessary to get the unions to call off the strike.�

In a press statement signed by Saraki's Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, the Senate president called for calm and an immediate investigation, apprehension and prosecution of all those involved in the attacks, saying that such senseless and malicious violence must have no place in Nigeria.

Commiserating with the government and affected communities in Plateau State,Saraki maintained that his prayers are with the government and the people.

A recent attack in the state that has reportedly left no fewer than 15 people dead.

President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has commiserated with the government and affected communities in Plateau State, over the recent attack in the state that has reportedly left no fewer than 15 people dead while calling on the security agencies to intensify efforts to protect the people and nab criminals perpetrating violence across the country,

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, Saraki called for calm and an immediate investigation, apprehension and prosecution of all those involved in the attacks, saying that “such senseless and malicious violence must have no place in Nigeria.�

“My prayers are with the government and people of the communities in Plateau State that have been affected by the recent spate of violence that has led to the killing of many innocent people.

“I am immensely saddened to hear that one family alone lost nine people in these reprehensible attacks. I pray that the affected family and community will find the strength to bear this irreparable loss, and ask that they also find in themselves, the forgiveness that will not perpetuate another cycle of violence.

“Our nation has experienced such needless attacks over the past few months. Again, as a country that is founded upon the fear of the Almighty, we must all come together to collectively condemn such acts and continue to insist that such senseless and malicious violence must have no place in Nigeria,� Saraki said.

The Senate President commended Governor Simon Lalong for the efforts that he and his administration have taken to maintain the peace in the state. “I commend Governor Lalong for the immediate measures that he has taken to forestall further violence in the State as the Chief Security Officer. At the national level, our security agencies must do all that they can to investigate, apprehend, and prosecute all the perpetrators of this violence.

“We must send a message out to all those that wish to disturb the peace across our nation that Nigeria and Nigerians will not stand for it. We must respond with the full weight and force of the laws and the institutions of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,� Saraki stated.

Nigeria signs code of conduct to actively fight terror

National security adviser of Nigeria, retired Maj. Gen. Babagana Monguno signing on to a code of conduct to achieve world free of terrorism.

Nigeria has signed a Code of Conduct, aimed at joining efforts by the global community to actively engage in the fight against terror in all its forms.

Nigeriaâ€s delegation to the meeting on the margins of the 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly at the UN Headquarters in New York, was led by the National Security Adviser, Major-General Babagana Monguno.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Monguno signed the document on behalf of Nigeria.

Nigeria is a member of the Advisory Board of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNCCT).

Other members of the Advisory Board of UNCCT are Saudi Arabia (Chair), Algeria, Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, China, Egypt, European Union (Guest Member), France, Germany, India, Indonesia and Morocco.

Norway, the Russian Federation, Pakistan, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom and the United States are also members.

The high-level event to “launch the code of conduct towards achieving a world free of terrorism� was hosted by the government of Kazakhstan on the margins of the 73rd UN General Assembly in New York.

Monguno, who signed on behalf of Nigeria said: “The political declaration aligns with Nigeriaâ€s stance on the fight against terrorism and indeed, Nigeriaâ€s unique views were taken on board during consultations on the document.

“The signing of the Code of Conduct on the part of Nigeria demonstrates our willingness to join the community of nations to actively fight terrorism in all its forms.

“It is a move that signals Nigeriaâ€s prioritisation of countering terrorism.

“By signing the declaration, member states resolve to strengthen global efforts to prevent and counter the scourge of terrorism in all forms and manifestations as it constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security. �

The political declaration, developed by the government of Kazakhstan, was initiated pursuant to United Nations General Assembly Resolutions A/RES/72/123 of Dec. 7, 2017 and A/RES/72/284 of June 26, 2018.

The resolution noted the importance of international cooperation towards achieving a world free of terrorism.

The meeting was moderated by Amb. Kairat Umarov, Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the UN and was attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, Kairat Abdrakhmanov.

It was also attended by Vladimir Voronkov, Head of the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism, Amb. Smail Chergui, African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security.

Also in attendance was Amb. Abdallah Al-Mouallimi, Chair of the Advisory Board of UNCCT and Chair of the Organisation of Islamic Countries Group on Counter-Terrorism.

Monguno, also attended a bilateral meeting with the Under-Secretary-General of the UN and the Executive Director of UNCCT, where he pledged Nigeriaâ€s commitment to defeating terror in all its forms.

The Nigerian security adviser added his message to a wall signed by the National Focal Point Counter Terrorism.

“Nigeria will continue to work with the UN in its bid to rid the world of the dreadful phenomenon of terrorism,� Monguno stressed.

The messages are meant to support the victims of terror and the replica of the messages would be made to be distributed and displayed worldwide.

Aisha Alhassan: Buhari’s minister set to dump APC

This is as a result of her disqualification from the Taraba governorship race by the APC screening panel.

The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Aisha Alhassan also known as Mama Taraba might dump the All Progressives Congress (APC) soon.

According to Punch, this is coming after she was disqualified by the APC screening panel.

There are reports in the media that Alhassan resigned from President Buhariâ€s cabinet on Friday, September 28, 2018.

Another source told Punch that Mama Taraba knew that she would be disqualified.

The source said that the minister had a hint that the APC chairman, Adams Oshiomhole was plotting to frustrate her governorship ambition.

“The minister is a force to reckon with in Taraba and nobody can win her among those contesting for the partyâ€s gubernatorial ticket in the state.

“Her political weight became a threat to the bigwigs in the party who are out to satisfy their personal interests. Clash of interests in the APC led to the decision not to clear the minister whom they believe will win the ticket against their preferred candidates given whatever mode of primary that would be adopted by the party,� the source said.

He public show of support for former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar might have earned her a stroke in the black book of the ruling party, according to Punch.

Alhassanâ€s media aide has however denied reports that she has resigned describing it as speculations also saying that she will respond when the time is right.

NACC partners firm to attract US investors in power, non-oil sectors

THE Nigerian-American Chamber of Commerce (NACC) said on Friday that it was collaborating with a firm, `FootPrint to Africa` to boost investments in agriculture, power and the mining sectors.

Mr Ebuka Ugochukwu, Communication Manager, NACC, said in a statement in Lagos that NACC was doing so by promoting economic cooperation between businesses in Nigeria and the U.S.

He said that the Chamber, in collaboration with FootPrint to Africa, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of the U.S., Nigeria, would hold The Independence Investment Forum (TIIF) on Oct. 1, 2019.

According to him, the forum will commemorate Nigeriaâ€s independence, advance economic cooperation, trade relations and prosperity of business and services of both nations.

NACC President, Chief Toyin Akomolafe, said on TIIF that for 58 years, the chamber had grown into a pillar that served as a catalyst in bringing together people to bolster bilateral commercial relations between the two countries.

“We have provided programmes and services that improve economic prosperity and sustainability of businesses of both countries.

“As an investment bridge and financial news company, FootPrint to Africa has consistently promoted and facilitated intra-African trade and foreign investment between global investors, African businesses and African states.

“TIIF is aimed at attracting long-term investments into agriculture, power/energy, mining and commodities, with focus on American investors and interested parties with presence across the globe,� he said.

Akomolafe said that the forum would bring together policymakers, domestic and foreign investors and business leaders to discuss investment needs and goals, without the need for investors to travel to various locations in Nigeria, to see projects.

He said that Nigerian companies seeking investments would also not need to travel to multiple countries to see the investors.

“Nigeria is a country buzzing with creative energy and blessed with vast resources and opportunities. You cannot claim to do business in Africa if you are not in Nigeria,� Akomolafe said.

He said that the forum would stimulate job creation, increase Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), deepen technology transfer and boost Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth.
