Independence Day: Health sector still needs improvement, says NMA

The Lagos Chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association, says brain drain, improper policies and investments, inadequate facilities and health insurance are yet to be addressed in the health sector as the nation marks its 58th independence.

The chapter’s president, Dr Saliu Oseni, made the remark in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos in commemoration of the country’s 58th Independence.

According to him, the sector has not recorded much improvement in spite of efforts made by government and other agencies to improve it.

“The reality is that the sector has not been improving; the National Health Insurance that is presumed to have covered about five per cent is far behind the expected result.

“Out-of-Pocket payment is still a challenge and as long as the country does not improve on health insurance, it will be near impossible to achieve Universal health Coverage, said Oseni.

He explained that brain drain was not helping matters as the country did not have enough health workers to serve the population.

According to him, in an average general hospital, doctors see not less than 50 patients at any clinic period and the situation is worse outside Lagos State.

“The ratio of doctors to patients in the country is still put at 1 to 6,000 patients and the World Health Organisation suggested one doctor to ten patients.

“We have a lot of specialists coming up now, but most of them do not have the facilities to practice what they specialised in, he said.

The chairman said the sector could improve if the government addressed the issues and collaborated with stakeholders in the sector.

According to him, a proper public and private partnership will go a long way to improve the health sector.

Oseni said: “Government needs to support private practitioners so that they can play that role of primary and secondary providers that they are supposed to play.

“There should be proper policies, investments, monitoring of funds allocated and assurance of implementation of policies or projects embarked on will take us a long way.

“Also, improved welfare of health workers, security of jobs and the environment, provision of adequate facilities will help improve the sector.

Independence Day: 5 Nollywood movies that celebrate Nigeria

'Nollywood is raising unrealistic expectations with these box office figures - Uduak Isong

In the spirit of the Independence celebration, see 5 Nollywood movies that capture the Nigerian culture, spirit and unsung heroes.

58 years ago today, Nigeria got her independence from the British.

What could be more satisfying than to lie in relaxation and watch a movie that celebrates Nigeria and the spirit of her citizens – ranging from biographical dramas to entertaining box-office blockbusters?

These movies below capture the Nigerian culture, journey of unsung heroes and the strength of Nigerians as a people.

1. "The Wedding Party"

The highest grossing Nigerian film, "The Wedding Party" represents the flamboyant Nigerian wedding culture. Except for the absence of the fundamental Nigerian Jollof rice – I mean, who holds a Nigerian wedding without Jollof rice? – the movie does its best to capture a typical Nigerian wedding.

It is a representation of all the drama that could occur pre and post a wedding party. A typical Nigerian wedding party is fun, dramatic, tedious, but definitely entertaining.

A typical Nigerian wedding has that relative who turns up for the food or souvenirs, friends who turn up for the 'gram' and even an envious ex who is just there to witness and gloat over the inadequacies of the ceremony.

"The Wedding Party" captures the energy, music, colourfulness, culture and fashion that makes a Nigerian wedding party fun to attend.

2. "A Soldier's Story"

If there's any film that attempts to celebrate and encourage heroic soldiers and their contributions to the country, it is "A Soldier's Story."

The movie follows a soldier on a peacekeeping mission, who is left for dead by some rebel soldiers. The movie depicts various emotions such as the heartbreak and anguish that accompanies the news of the demise of a loved one in battle.

This story is such that ensures we remember the labours of these heroes past; heroes such as the Lt. Colonel Muhammad Abu Ali and other gallant officers who died in service during the war against Boko Haram.

3. "A Place in the Stars"

Inspired by the tenure of the late Director General of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Professor Dora Akunyili, the 2014 Steve Gukas film tells the story of Dakim, a young lawyer who is in possession of vital information about the trafficking of counterfeit drugs that can save many lives if he passes it on, but make millions of dollars if he doesn’t.

Late Professor Dora Akunyili, during her tenure as the Head of NAFDAC, tirelessly fought to halt the sale and use of fake drugs, even at the expense of her life. She would go on to become the Federal Minister of Information & Communication in 2008, and spear-headed a rebranding campaign for Nigeria with the slogan: “Good People, Great Nation.

The film acknowledges the dogged and honest spirit of several Nigerians out there who have been consistent in being good and portraying Nigeria as a great nation.

4. "Saworoide"

Nigeria is a country with several cultural practices that define us. We have the Sharo ceremony in Fulani Land; traditional baby naming ceremony in Yoruba land; the fattening room in Efik land; and Omugwo in Igbo land.

But if we are talking about one of the films that encapsulates an interesting culture of a tribe in Nigeria, it's "Saworide," which means talking drum or brass bell in English Language.

The Tunde Kelani film follows the setting of an old Yoruba norm in the town of Jogbo, where a person can not be crowned king without the Saworoide being played by the right person.

Drumming is a key part of the cultural heritage of the Yoruba people. They are several drums such as Gangan (Talking Drum), Bata, Saworide, Omela Ako; all used for different occasions.

The film celebrates the charm of African art, and the beauty of tradition and folklore.

Most importantly the movie speaks on Nigeria and how it has dealt with civil rule and military dictatorship.

5. "93 Days"

"93 Days" celebrates the sacrifices of the late Dr. Ameyo Adadevoh and all who risked their lives to make sure the Ebola virus was contained in Nigeria.

On July 20, 2014, Liberian, Patrick Sawyer, arrived Lagos. He became severely ill upon arrival and died five days later of the Ebola disease. Almost 93 days later, on 20 October 2014, the World Health Organization (WHO) officially declared Nigeria to be Ebola free.

The method used to contain the virus brought positive recognition from around the world for the country. In WHO’s Ebola Situation Assessment report, it was commended with lessons for countries such as the United States. Nigeria had become that exemplary kid in class for a good behavior.

Ebola was controlled as a result of the quick thinking, resilience and selflessness of the late Dr. Ameyo Adadevoh and other medical personnel. Ameyo is credited for curbing a wider spread of the Ebola virus in Nigeria by placing Patrick Sawyer in quarantine despite pressures from some quarters to have him released.

Dr. Ameyo Adadevoh died on 19 August 2014, few weeks after testing positive for the Ebola virus disease.

Apart from recording a significant period in Nigeria, the movie "93 Days" depicts the strength, selflessness and sacrificial nature of Nigerians.

#NoTooYoungToRun was passed for selfish reasons | 16 talking points from the September edition of #ThursdayTalks

Without mincing words, Nigeria is going through very difficult times. And so, it is pertinent that we have discussions on the many issues that stagnate the countries progress. The seventh edition of Thursday Talks Lagos, a monthly conversation with thought leaders, change agents and active citizens which aims at driving conversations around the demand for good governance driven by active citizenship was one of such deliberations.

This event is organised by YNaija, EiE Nigeria and BudgIT.

For the September edition, Juliet Kego, Co-Founder, Whole WoMan Network and Akin Oyebode (Executive Secretary, Lagos State Employment Trust Fund debated on the topic: “Millenials and the Challenges of Nation Building“.

See talking points below:

  • I think we are making progress but economic disability is the problem” – Oyebode.
  • One thing we have to unlearn as a nation is a total dependency on the government and the inherent distrust of markets. We place too much power in government that such powers can be over-used. The government runs virtually everything in Nigeria which shouldn’t be so ideally.” – Oyebode.
  • For the younger generation, we have to learn from the mistakes of the past and attempt to create greatness out of it” – Oyebode.
  • If we do not face our challenges with a binary approach, then there is no incentive for our political leaders to do anything. People will keep getting into positions of authority and remain wayward” – Oyebode.
  • We need leadership that prioritises education. The current leadership does not even bother” – Kego.
  • We need leaders who understand that the private sector needs energising. More infrastructure to allow them to thrive. We need leaders that will invest in people, young people” – Kego.
  • The world is becoming more democratic and because of that, people have less tolerant of nonsense. Millennials are more expressive and have lots of medium to express themselves than people of the other generation” – Oyebode.
  • “We have lost our shared values. We’ve lost the core of what makes a nation” – Kego.
  • Let’s not be deceived, the reason why the  Bill could be passed now is because older politicians want their children to get into politics earlier” – Oyebode.
  • It is not enough to be young and mental, you need a structure to win an election in Nigeria. One of those structures is name recognition. Millennials must get involved in the politics of their locality. It goes beyond social media ranting and criticism. Get involved in the process. It’s not just about you having PVC but the ability to influence how people think and take decisions” – Oyebode.
  • We have a dysfunctional country where almost nothing is working. Politics and Government are what drives the economy. Millennials form the larger percentage of the governed and should be given the chance to participate in the process.
  • There’s a need to design advocacy that is geared towards a positive outcome. Advocacy goes beyond telling people to just go get their PVCs. Beyond the  Bill there has to be a structural change in the system so the millennials can actively participate” – Kego.
  • Some of the most ill-performed governors in Nigeria are the youngest. Millennials must go through the process so as to understand what to disrupt. You cannot just say you want to rush into it. Because while many are discussing disruption, they don’t know what they want to disrupt” – Oyebode.
  • Nigeria’s political system isn’t designed for competence but for cronies and settling people” – Kego.
  • Millennials participation in politics shouldn’t be necessarily confrontational. Leverage on the power of digital media” – Oyebode.
  • The advantage of youth is also its problem. People need a whole lot of coaching because inexperience is one of the major problems.

Independence Day: Top 5 Christian denominations after 1960

Independence Day: Top 5 Christian denominations after 1960

As Nigeria marks the 58th anniversary of her independence, we take a look at some of the churches that were born after the colonial era.

Monday, October 1, 2018, marks the 58th anniversary since Nigeria gained independence. Before that eventful day in 1960, there were a couple existing Christian denominations like the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG),  founded by Pa Josiah Akindayomi in 1952. Since then, there have a lot more churches. Here are the top five definitions since 1960:

Deeper Christian Life Ministry

This denomination also known as Deeper Life Bible Church started in 1973. It was founded by the General Superintendent, Pastor William Folorunso Kumuyi. At the time of its inception (August 1973), Kumuyi was a Mathematics Lecturer at the University of Lagos. There, he started a Bible study group in his official Flat 2 residence at Unilag with 15 members who had a desire to understand the scriptures, hence the name - deeper life.

Pastor Philip Oluwi, one of the pioneer members of the church, describes the beginning of Kumuyi's ministry. In his words, "I was anxious to have a deeper knowledge of God. All along I wasn't satisfied with what I was receiving from the churches. A friend told me about the Deeper Life Bible Study…so in January 1975, we went together to Flat 2. After the Bible Study that night, I knew I had arrived at where I really wanted to be."

This laid the foundation for his ministry, which became the Deeper Life Bible Church after the study group started holding Sunday service in November 1982.

Living Faith Church Worldwide

This church is also known as Winners Chapel. It was founded by Bishop David Oyedepo in 1983 after a divine experience. Reportedly, the then 26-year-old founder had a vision that lasted for 18 hours in May 1981. During this vision,  God said: "Now the hour has come to liberate the world from all oppressions of the devil, through the preaching of the Word of faith; and I am sending you to undertake this task".

This mandate led to the establishment of the first Living Faith in December 1983. The first church, located in Kaduna state had only four members. Years later, this tiny church has grown into a megachurch with branches all over the nation with the headquarters located in Canaan Land, Ota. Living Faith can also be found in at least 49 countries.

Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries

MFM was founded by Dr. Daniel Kolawole Olukoya (DKO) who held a prayer meeting in his home on a Wednesday in 1989. Reportedly, only 24 people showed up. This number continued to grow until the meetings had to be moved from Olukoya's living room to 60 Old Yaba Road, Yaba, Lagos.

Eventually, an abandoned place at 13 Olasimbo Street, Onike, Yaba was bought and turned into what we now know as the International Headquarters of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries. The church held its first official service on April 24, 1994. Fun Fact: The name was revealed to the founder while he was praying. The church can be found all over Nigeria, London, the United States, Canada, Europe, the Caribbean, and Asia.

Synagogue Church of All Nations

SCOAN is founded and led by an unusual prophet named Temitope Balogun Joshua (born June 12, 1963). Reportedly, he spent 15 months in his mother's womb and escaped death seven days after his birth.

His ministry started after he received a vision. During this encounter, he is said to have received divine anointing and entered a covenant with God who gave him permission to start his ministry. This led to the birth of SCOAN with started years ago with eight members in Agodo-Egbe in Lagos state.

Now, Prophet Joshua's church is an architectural masterpiece located in Ikotun-Egbe where over 15,000 people visit every Sunday. Unlike other ministries, SCOAN can only be found in two places - Accra, Ghana and Lagos state which makes it a major tourist attraction. According to The Guardian, it gets more people than the combined number of visitors to Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London.

Prophet Joshua explained his reason for having only one branch during a Sunday service on August 24, 2014, the Daily Post reports.

He said, "I would have loved to have branches all over the world because people want T.B. Joshua everywhere. But it is not yet time because it will be too much for my character. When the load is too heavy for you, it will become a burden."

Christ Embassy

Also known as Believers' LoveWorld Incorporated, this church was founded by pastor Chris Oyakhilome in 1990. Like MFM, it started as a prayer group led by the founder who was studying architecture at the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma in Edo state. It was initially known as Believer's LoveWorld Fellowship and then Believer's LoveWorld Inc.

Since then, it has become a global network of churches with over 13 million members across the world. Reportedly, the headquarters of Lagos has 40 000 members alone.

Happy Independence day guys!

Opinion: Why I think the Osun re-run election should not be taken seriously

The Osun supplementary election in which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gboyega Oyetola, the winner is an aberration. It was marred by irregularities, widespread malpractice, voter intimidation, violence and harassment which has rolled back the electoral gains of the 2015 presidential election.

In a joint press conference, the European Union, the United States and the United Kingdom faulted the election alleging interference and intimidation. US Consul-General John Bray stated thus, “We witnessed what appeared to be incidents of interference and intimidation of voters and heard reports of harassment of party monitors, journalists and domestic observers.

These reports of irregularities were corroborated by INEC earlier in the course of the election on its Twitter handle. Similarly, One of its officials, Olusegun Agbaje, on TV quipped, “that someone’s head was sliced with a machete does not mean the re-run was not peaceful” inadvertently, admitting widespread violence in an election which involved only seven polling units and less than 4000 voters.

What transpired in the re-run election falls short of global standards expected of a free, fair, credible and peaceful election. This literally means that INEC under Professor Mahmood Yakubu cannot be trusted to conduct the 2019 general elections involving 774 Local Government Areas, 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The election also falls short of the standards set by ex-President Goodluck Jonathan and Prof Attahiru Jega in the conduct of the 2015 elections which renewed hope in our democratic processes and gave Nigeria’s electoral system some credibility in the eyes of the global community and international observers.

Election observers reported widespread restriction of movement, arrests and denial of access to the polling units by security agencies. There are videos on social media where hoodlums allegedly loyal to the APC prevented PDP voters from gaining access to polling units, confiscated voters’ PVCs and unleashed violence on the people of Osun. Voters loyal to the APC, however, were reportedly singled out and allowed entry to polling units. While Saturday’s election was adjudged peaceful, the re-run was a charade which warrants INEC to redeem its credibility and restore confidence in the institution as an unbiased election umpire.

Nigeria cannot afford to retrogress after the 2015 election became a reference point for free, fair, credible and peaceful in Africa. INEC under Prof Yakubu should not bring disgrace to Nigeria and erode the confidence which INEC garnered under the previous administration. The degradation of the electoral system has been gaining momentum as witnessed in previous elections before Osun, most recently, the Ekiti election but the brazen display of desperation by the ruling APC culminated in the daylight robbery in Osun where advanced electoral manipulation was deployed in the most crude manner in the glare of international observers and Nigerians who watched the charade aghast. Having lost in the initial election before the run-off, the party resorted to clandestine tactics of collusion with security agencies and thugs which were deployed to intimidate voters who were sympathetic to PDP.

The Situation Room, in its submission on the supplementary election concluded that, “It is clear that the circumstances that led to the cancellation of the elections in the seven polling units where the elections were re-run, including violence, also repeated themselves in most of this election, raising questions on why results obtained under these conditions should now stand.”

It will be in the best interest of democracy and Nigeria for INEC to redeem its image by cancelling the Osun supplementary election, scheduling a re-run or declare Senator Ademola Adeleke of the PDP the winner of the governorship election based on Saturday’s peaceful election.
