Nigeria @ 58: Oyedepo says Nigeria will rise again to glory

Bishop David Oyedepo

The Presiding Bishop of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, (Winners’ Chapel), Dr David Oyedepo, says Nigeria will rise again to glory.

Oyedepo made this assertion in a satellite telecast of the church’s special prayer session for the nation at 58, monitored by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Monday in Abuja.

“It was made known to me via divine revelation in 1979, while I was praying for the well-being of the country.

“The good news is that Nigeria will rise again to glory and honour, Oyedepo assured.

The Bishop urged his congregation to continue to pray for peace and prosperity of the nation.

NAN reports that prayers were also made for God to intervene and direct the government to make policies that would be to the benefit of the people and the country.

Bishop said during the special service that everyone in power is a caretaker and should not see it as a private enterprise in other not to be kicked out by God into the forest.

The cleric warned leaders at all levels of government against being insensitive to the feelings and sufferings of Nigerian masses, urging them to repent and have value for the lives of citizens, who are God’s creations and people.

According to him, if they do not repent after this warning they would fall down for the sake of the nation.

“Those in leadership should not allow God to kick them into the forest and if they do not key into this warning of today so many of them will not live to see 2019.

“No agent of the devil will cause problems for this nation any more, he said.

He, however, said that Nigeria is set for a turnaround and the hidden treasures of any nation dwell in the hands of the believers.

“God have a plan for a dramatic turn around for Nigeria. The hidden treasure of any nation is in the hands of the believers.

“Nigeria shall be healed and the wounds have been cured because Nigeria is not a private business of anybody but a God’s own nation, he said.

The Bishop warned his congregation that whenever they find themselves in power that should humble themselves because no one owns the nation.

Oyedepo said that when the wicked rules the people mourn, adding that there is wickedness at the highest level in the nation.

“Our God removes kings and set up kings. Anyone that will not allow this nation to rest will be laid to rest.

“No one voted for Joseph but God set him aside for special works, God remains God of strange works and of strange acts, he said.

Chioma Akpotha

Let's have a look at how some of your favourite celebrities are marking the Independence Day celebration.

Happy independence day Nigeria again from all of us at PULSE and today we will be hanging out with the celebs, as usual, to find out what they are saying about the day.

Just so you know, some of these guys might be saying a lot and for others, it will be just another business and hustle day. However, we have those celebrities that will go the extra mile for this day by even taking special photos! Yes, it's that deep for some of them.

Let's take a look at what some of your favourite celebrities are saying about the Independence Day.

1. Omoni Oboli

For the gorgeous Omoni Oboli who came to slay on her Instagram page, she wishes Nigeria a happy independence despite the struggles it has put its citizens through over the last 58 years.

"Happy Independence Day Nigeria! I know we are going through a lot as a country but I celebrate our resilient spirit! THIS TOO SHALL PASS So celebrate dear friends, better days are ahead! A new Nigeria beckons      God bless Nigeria      I love you all," she captioned her photo.

2.  Efe Money

Season two winner of BBNaija, Efe Money didn't post a lot on his page but he too had a message for Nigeria on his Instagram page.

"The birth of a new dawn… the time the course of history changes.             #HappyIndependenceDayNigeria #IloveMyCountry," he wrote.

3. Davido

Davido's photo for the Independence day has got to be the cutest ever! Unlike most celebrities who have put up special photos on her Instagram and Twitter pages, the music star did something unique by posting a photo of his adorable daughter, Imade with a caption;

"Happy Independence Nigeria     .''

4. Mr Eazi

Errr…we might be getting a shocker very soon as it looks like Mr Eazi might be venturing into politics. We aren't so sure but from all indications and from the message he shared with his fans on his Instagram page on Independence day, looks like we have a politician in the making! Epic!

"Happy Independence Day to my Great Country, she makes me believe that regardless of unfavourable conditions I can make it!! That is the Spirit of Nigeria! Hope! Perseverance! It's time for us to take our future into our hands be involved, demand great governance! We have the Keys To The City! Demand real change, not recycled leadership! PS- I will be addressing my constituents on the 5th of October #BeInvolved #notTooYoungTorun #2019 #Yewa #Ogun #Nigeria #keysTothecity," he wrote.

5. Lilian Afegbai

Lilian Afegbai came prepared for the Independence day celebration as had a number of photos shared on her Instagram page to mark the special day. With a series of captions, Lilian just wants everyone to fight for our dear country.

"Nigeria is our home, let’s fight for our country. Happy Independence Day and happy new month," she captioned one of the photos.

6. Terry Tha Rapman

The last 48 hours have seen a troubled north witnessed another shocking attack and this time in the city of Jos. For Terry Tha Rapman, these continuous killings make it impossible for us to be in a celebratory mood. In a series of tweets, the rapper lamented about the killings going on in the country.

"There's nothing to celebrate. How can we feel happy when our families are not safe? How are we independent, yet no peace & justice?" he tweeted.

It didn't end there, as he went on to talk about the struggles we face to stay patriotic despite the pains in the country.

"Jos, Plateau State; we are not safe. I want to talk about #NigeriaAt58 and the struggle with Patriotism in the midst of our pain. Patriotism is the expression of love and loyalty to one's country or nation. This love motivates a citizen to defend the integrity of the country…" he added.

7. Anto [BBNaija]

On a lighter note, former BBNaija housemate, Anto tries to spice things up during the Independence day with a very sexy bikini photo and a Nigerian flag to cover up all that sexiness.

"Happy Independence Day Nigerians! I’ve been in Benin Republic for the weekend and it’s true that WHEREVER Nigerians go, we make our presence known. Let’s keep on but with positivity only please," she captioned the photo.

8. Chioma Akpotha

Let's just say Chioma Akpotha's message for this year's Independence Day is the longest so far! In her message, she preached unity amongst everyone in the country despite our different languages. She also wrote about everyone coming out to sever Nigeria with all our strength (Hmmmm…isn't that a part of the National anthem?) She however left us with a gorgeous Nigeria themed photo.

"I would like to wish every Nigerian a Happy Independence Day! We as Nigerians should recognise that we have rights and are responsible for the country as a whole. Even though our tribes and tongues may differ, in brotherhood we stand united and our destinies are bound together. We should all be proud to serve our sovereign Motherland because any freedom without a commitment to each other, without patriotism or love or peace or justice, simply makes the labours of our heroes who died for our freedom in vain. So let us serve Nigeria with all our strength and defend her unity, and uphold her honour and glory Bilie nu ndi ala anyi Biri kam biri Nigeria bu nke anyi  Happy Independence Day everyone!" she wrote.

Independence Day: How much do you know about Nigeria's first national anthem?

How much do you know about Nigeria's first national anthem?

Nigeria's current national anthem was not used until 18 years after the nation gained independence in 1960.

When Nigeria officially became an independent country on October 1, 1960, it needed a national anthem to mark its transformation from a colonised entity to a nation of its own.

However, while many Nigerians are now familiar with the current "Arise, O compatriots" anthem, it wasn't the nation's first choice.

In fact, it didn't become the nation's anthem until 1978, 18 years after independence and eight years after the end of a terrible civil war.

The anthem of choice when Nigeria became an independent country 58 years ago was titled "Nigeria we hail thee".

The anthem's lyrics was written by a British expariate, Lillian Jean Williams, while the music was composed by a certain Frances Berda.

Due to criticisms thrown at the anthem and an agitation to have it changed, a national competition was held for the purpose of choosing a new one with a committee created to choose the best entry. In 1978, Nigeria had a new anthem to replace its first post-independence anthem.

The committee chose entries from five winning contestants and fused them to make one anthem. The current "Arise, O compatriots" anthem contains lyrics from five entries composed by John Ikechukwu, Eme Etim Akpan, Babatunde Ogunnaike, Sotu Omoigui and P. O. Aderogbu.

Benedict Odiase, the Director of Music in the Nigeria Police Band at the time, pieced the entries together and composed the music for the anthem that is still sung everywhere in the country today.

Below is Nigeria's first anthem as an independent country:

Nigeria we hail thee,

Our own dear native land,

Though tribe and tongue may differ,

In brotherhood we stand,

Nigerians all, are proud to serve

Our sovereign Motherland.

Our flag shall be a symbol

That truth and justice reign,

In peace or battle honour'd,

And this we count as gain,

To hand on to our children

A banner without stain.

O God of all creation,

Grant this our one request,

Help us to build a nation

Where no man is oppressed,

And so with peace and plenty

Nigeria may be blessed.

Ambode, Sanwo-Olu and Gbagada General Hospital’s breach of Hippocratic Oath

“Into whatever houses I enter…whatever, in connection with my professional practice or not, in connection with it, I see or hear, in the life of men, which ought not to be spoken of abroad, I will not divulge, as reckoning that all such should be kept secret

The inference above is the medical Hippocratic oath of secrecy that protects the rights of patients and their medical records from being divulged to a third party. Health and ill-health is often a deeply personal journey and the fear of stigma and shame keeps many sufferers from seeking medical attention. So it is of the utmost importance that personal information shared remains between the patient and the care giver. This medical oath of secrecy has now been flouted by some medical personnel at the Lagos state owned Gbagada General Hospital and is now being used as a political weapon by the Lagos state Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode against the aspiration of Mr. Babajide Sanwo Olu a Governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State.

RELATED: Who is Jide Sanwo-Olu, Ambode’s political nemesis

On Sunday, September 30, 2018 the Lagos state Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode while addressing a press conference at the Lagos house Alausa, took a swipe at Mr. Sanwo-Olu by saying “He doesn’t have the competence to do what he is being propelled to do. This is somebody that has gone for rehabilitation before. The records are there at the Gbagada General Hospital,.  This simply means the state Governor would have either used his position as the Governor to access Mr. Sanwo-Olu medical records or some medical staff at the Gbagada hospital made such records available to the Governor even without requesting for it for political reasons. Irrespective of how the Governor got to know about this medical history, it shows the Gbagada General Hospital committed an infraction by making such information public without the approval of the patient while the decision of the Governor to make such a political point is another low for public communication by elected officers in the country.

RELATED: Tinubu speaks on Lagos APC primaries and officially backs Sanwo-Olu

I am indifferent to the existing political situation in the state but all I’m saying is that the right of every patient must be respected and protected from third party as contained in the Hippocratic Oath that was sworn to by medical personnel as the release of such information without the patients approval could be damaging. As for the Lagos state Governor, he has committed an infraction that belittle his office.

Quake-hit Indonesia starts burying dead in mass grave

Rescue personnel prepare the bodies of the earthquake victims at the compound of a police hospital in Palu, Indonesia's Central Sulawesi on October 1, 2018, after an earthquake and tsunami hit the area on September 28. AFP PHOTO / MUHAMMAD RIFKI

Indonesian volunteers began burying bodies in a mass grave with space for more than a thousand people on Monday, victims of a quake-tsunami that devastated swathes of Sulawesi and left authorities struggling to deal with the sheer scale of the disaster.

Indonesia is no stranger to natural calamities and Jakarta had been keen to show it could deal with a catastrophe that has killed at least 844 people, according to the latest official count, and displaced some 48,000 more.

But four days on some remote areas are only now being contacted, medicines are running out and rescuers are struggling with a shortage of heavy equipment as they try to reach desperate victims calling out from the ruins of collapsed buildings.

In response, President Joko Widodo opened the door to the dozens of international aid agencies and NGOs who are lined up to provide life-saving assistance.

“Last night, President @jokowi authorized us to accept international help for urgent disaster-response & relief,” senior government official Tom Lembong wrote on Twitter on Monday.

Officials fear the toll will rise steeply in the coming days and are preparing for the worst, declaring a 14-day state of emergency.

At Poboya — in the hills above the devastated seaside city of Palu — volunteers began to fill a vast grave with the dead, with instructions to prepare for 1,300 victims to be laid to rest.

Authorities are desperate to stave off any disease outbreak caused by decomposing bodies, some now are riddled with maggots.

Three trucks arrived stacked with corpses wrapped in orange, yellow and black bags, an AFP reporter on the scene saw. One-by-one they were dragged into the grave as excavators poured soil on top.

Twisted wasteland
In Balaroa, a Palu suburb once home to a housing complex, the scale of the damage was obvious. A wasteland of flattened trees, shards of concrete, twisted metal roofing, door frames and mangled furniture stretched out into the distance.

Dazed groups of people ambled over the wreckage, unclear where or how to start digging. Among them were three men looking for their younger brother.

Rescuers are racing against the clock and a lack of equipment to save those still trapped in the rubble, with up to 60 people feared to be underneath one Palu hotel alone.

Two survivors have been plucked from the 80-room Hotel Roa-Roa, Indonesia’s search and rescue agency said, and there could still be more alive.

Desperate survivors turned to looting shops for basics like food, water and fuel as police looked on, unwilling or unable to intervene.

“There has been no aid, we need to eat. We don’t have any other choice, we must get food,” one man in Palu told AFP as he filled a basket with goods from a nearby store.

Meanwhile government officials said some 1,200 inmates fled at least three prisons in the region.

“I’m sure they escaped because they feared they would be affected by the earthquake. This is for sure a matter of life and death for the prisoners,” Ministry of Justice official Sri Puguh Utami said.

Many survivors have spent the last days desperately searching for loved ones while dealing with the trauma of the disaster.

One survivor, Adi, was hugging his wife by the beach when the tsunami struck on Friday. He has no idea where she is now, or whether she is alive.

“When the wave came, I lost her,” he said. “I was carried about 50 metres. I couldn’t hold anything,” he said.

Others have centred their search for loved ones around open-air morgues, where the dead lay in the baking sun — waiting to be claimed, waiting to be named.

In other places, the picture was even less clear.

Indonesia’s Metro TV broadcast aerial footage from the southern suburb of Petobo, where the devastation appeared extensive.

According to government estimates there could be up to 700 people killed there alone, with many of the 1,747 homes destroyed.

“We don’t know how many casualties there are at the complex” said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the national disaster agency spokesman.

Ports, bridges, roads shattered
Yenni Suryani, of Catholic Relief Services, said devastated infrastructure was hampering rescue efforts.

“Humanitarian groups are struggling to get people into affected areas,” she said. The main airport at Palu was damaged, landslides had cut off key roads while “power is out almost everywhere,” she added.

The local airport has been cleared to receive humanitarian and commercial flights, but so far the landing slots have been taken up by Indonesia’s powerful military, which is staging its own assistance efforts.

Satellite imagery provided by regional relief teams showed severe damage at some of the area’s major ports, with large ships tossed on land, quays and bridges trashed and shipping containers thrown around.

A double-arched yellow bridge had collapsed, its ribs twisted as cars bobbed in the water below.

Indonesia, home to 260 million people, is one of the world’s most disaster-prone nations.

It lies on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where tectonic plates collide and many of the world’s volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur.

A massive 2004 quake triggered a tsunami that killed 220,000 throughout the region, including 168,000 in Indonesia.

Buhari: Be responsible on social media, President cautions Nigerians in Independence Day speech

Be responsible on social media, Buhari cautions Nigerians

The president warned that there are disruptive forces using social media to provoke tensions.

President Muhammadu Buhari has cautioned Nigerians on how they conduct themselves on social media where he alleged that "disruptive and corrosive forces" hide to provoke tensions.

The president raised the alarm on the usage of social media in his national broadcast on the occasion of Nigeria's 58th Independence anniversary at the Presidential Villa on October 1, 2018.

The president noted that the country had never faced the 'challenge' of such a technology which some are abusing to "provoke passions and stir tensions".

He said, "Fellow Nigerians, now we have in our hands technology that is a powerful tool that we can and should use for knowledge and understanding. As with other countries, we must also learn how to manage those tendencies that, instead, look to abuse new technologies to provoke passions and stir tensions.

"Never before have we faced such a challenge. We must all rise to the responsibility of shutting out those disruptive and corrosive forces that hide in today's world of social media.

"We need critical minds and independent thinking, to question and question until we are satisfied we have the facts. Otherwise, all the progress we have made as a democracy since 1999 is at stake."

INEC will be independent – Buhari

The president also assured Nigerians that he'll ensure that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducts free and fair elections in 2019.

"I have committed myself many times to ensure that elections are fully participatory, free and fair and that the Independent National Electoral Commission will be exactly INDEPENDENT and properly staffed and resourced. The ballot box is how we make our choice for the governments that rule in our name," he said.

In his address, the president highlighted the 'steady improvement' in the security situation in the North East where military troops battle against terrorist group, Boko Haram. He promised Nigerians that his government is committed towards preventing the terrorist group from fulfilling its goal to capture territories and destroy democracy.

While speaking about the herders-farmers crisis that has claimed the lives of hundreds of victims this year alone, President Buhari reiterated his earlier position that the it is being exploited by self-serving individuals and pledged his administration's resolve towards finding a lasting solution.

He also praised his administration for making strides in its anti-corruption war, noting that he has created an enabling environment for local and foreign investment in Nigeria.

He praised Nigerian youths and highlighted their important role in nation-building, and promised to continue to work tirelessly to promote, protect and preserve a united, peaceful, prosperous and secure Nigeria.
