Police arrest suspected killers of 3 officers, 2 vigilantes in Taraba

Nigerian Police

Taraba police command on Tuesday said it had apprehended three suspects in connection with the killing of three policemen and two vigilantes in the state.

The suspects were among 20 others held for other offences, who were presented to newsmen in Jalingo by the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr David Akinremi.

He recalled that the policemen and the vigilantes were killed in Bujum village, Lau Local Government Area of the state on Aug. 6, 2018 and had their AK47 rifle and a Bareta pistol taken away by their attackers.

Akinremi said that the offences of the other 20 suspects included rape, armed robbery, vandalism and dealing in human parts.

He named the slain police officers as ASP Kilobas Iliya, Sgt. John Dogo and PC Joel Saleh, adding that they and the deceased vigilantes were ambushed and killed by the gang of armed bandits while responding to a distress call.

Their suspected killers, according to him, are Adamu Bakari, Haruna Buba and Ali Musa.

“The suspects not only admitted their roles in the dastardly act but confirmed that about 20 of them were recruited by one Ahmadu Baka, Sarkin Fulani of Abare’’.

He said that the suspects confessed that the arms they used in killing the officers were given to them by Baka “under the guise that they were to help him fight some people coming to cart away his cattle.

The police boss said that one AK47 rifle, single Barretta rifle, a locally-made pistol, cutlass and charms were recovered from the suspects.

He urged the public to be vigilant and provide useful information to the police, adding that the command was on the trail of the remaining members of the gang and their sponsor.

Ex-Macedonian Prime Minister Seeks Asylum In Hungary

Former Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski said on Tuesday he had fled to Hungary and was seeking political asylum there.

The development came six months after he was sentenced to two years in prison on corruption-related charges.

Macedonian police issued an arrest warrant on Monday for Gruevski, who resigned in 2016 after 10 years in power.

During his trial, he failed to show up to begin his sentence following a Nov. 9 court ruling against his motion for a reprieve.

On his Facebook page, Gruevski wrote that he fled the country after receiving “countless threats against his life.

“I am in Budapest now and I am seeking political asylum from the authorities of Hungary. I will always remain faithful to the Macedonian cause and will never give up, his post said.

A Macedonian police official, who asked not to be named, told Reuters that Gruevski did not leave Macedonia “through a legal border crossing …

‘We are still checking information about where he is.

Dimce Arsovski, a spokesman for the opposition nationalist VMRO-DPMNE party, which Gruevski once led, said he had no information about the ex-premier’s whereabouts.

A Hungarian government spokesman said he could neither confirm nor deny Gruevski’s remarks.

“We are unable to comment on individual asylum claims which are still being processed, he said in an email.

On Oct. 20, Macedonia’s parliament ratified an agreement to change the country’s name, bringing a decades-old dispute with Greece one step closer to being resolved.

Eighty deputies in the 120-seat parliament voted in favour of renaming the Balkan state as the Republic of North Macedonia – just reaching the two-thirds majority needed to enact constitutional changes.

N-Power to accommodate 1 million beneficiaries, says Osinbajo

Osinbajo

Nigeria’s vice president Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday said government’s N-Power programme will be expanded to accommodate 1 million beneficiaries in the next phase in 2019.

Osinbajo said it was important for more citizens to benefit from the social intervention programme to curb the growing rate of unemployment in the country.

“The idea of N-Power is supposed to be government’s own programme of direct employment and training. At the moment, we have taken up to 500,000 and in the next phase, we are looking at another 200,000 and closely followed by another 300,000,” Osinbajo’s media aide Laolu Akande said in a statement.

“In all, we will be employing up to a million; and that will be the largest post-tertiary job programme in entire Africa.”

The vice-president said that N-Power was borne out of the growing need for government’s direct intervention in job creation.

“The reason why we have done this is because of the employment problems that we have, we may not be able to engage everybody but at least, the government must give some direct provision of jobs,“ Osinbajo said.

He explained that it would be impossible for a government to fix all the unemployment issues and pay more than the N30, 000 stipend given to beneficiaries on a monthly basis.

Osinbajo assured beneficiaries that the Nigerian Government would create an enabling environment to ensure that employed and unemployed Nigerians can add value to the society.

He added that ongoing infrastructural projects were one of many structures the Buhari-led administration was using to create the opportunities to provide more jobs, especially through manufacturing and construction.

“So, we are doing roads and rail, providing power; that is the way we can develop industry. We are energising our markets at the moment, putting solar power in the markets.”

Just In: Buhari reportedly admits seeing Ganduje’s alleged bribery videos

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday reportedly spoke on the trending issue of the bribery allegations involving Kano Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje who appeared in a series of videos published by online medium, Daily Nigerian that allegedly showed him collecting kickbacks in dollars from a contractor handling projects in the state.

The President who is currently in France is reported to have touched on the issue while addressing a group of Nigerian students in the country, as he asked rhetorically:

“That aside, haven’t you watched the videos of the governor stuffing dollars under his gown?

We gave the videos to security agencies for vetting. And we will surely take action on the matter if he is found guilty, one of the participants quoted the president as asking while demonstrating how the governor was stashing bundles of dollars under his babbarriga.

Although the president is reported to have berated Ganduje for taking kickbacks from contractors, he is quoted to have praised the governor for completing the projects abandoned by the administration of his predecessor, Senator Rabiu Kwanwaso, who he (Buhari) said accused of diverting funds meant for projects of presidential campaign.

As reported by the Daily Nigerian, PresidentBuhari said the former Presidential Aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) started projects (he commended Governor Ganduje for completing) but diverted the money for presidential campaign.

“This are the projects he (Kwankwaso) started but diverted the balance of the money to go and contest for presidency instead of completing them.

The good projects started by Kwankwaso in education and healthcare were completed by Ganduje. If it were another person, the projects may not be completed, the president reportedly said.

CNN Sues Trump’s Administration, Demands Acosta’s Press Pass Be Restored

CNN on Tuesday filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump demanding that White House security credentials be returned to correspondent Jim Acosta.

The White House revoked Acosta’s credentials after a testy exchange with the president during a news conference last week. Acosta repeatedly pushed to ask Trump about special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into the 2016 election. The White House said it pulled Acosta’s access because he inappropriately made contact with an aide who tried to pull the microphone away from him to cut off his questions.

NIMC Opens 10 Special Centres In Jigawa To Speed Up ID Card Enrollment

NIMC

The Jigawa office of the National Identity Cards Commission (NIMC) says it has opened 10 more special registration centres to speed up enrollment in the state.

Mr Aminu Jakada, the NIMC Coordinator in the state, made this known in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse on Tuesday.

Jakada said that the centres were in Kazaure Emirate in collaboration with Kazaure Emirate Council to speed up the enrollment of residents.

He added that the commission has three other special centres at Chakwaikwaiwa village in Taura Local Government Area, Federal University Dutse (FUD) in Dutse Local Government Area and Hadejia town in Hadejia Local Government Area.

The coordinator added that “and I must add that we are still interested in opening more special centres. So, if there is any town or organisation interested in opening a special center, we are willing and ready to collaborate and do that.

He expressed the hope that the centres would enable more residents to register easily with the commission.

He exlained that “with the support of Kazaure Emirate Council, we were able to provide 10 more special registration centres in the area to enable more people to register with ease.

“The aim of the centres is to ease the stress of residents in those areas as they do not have to come to the state capital to register.

“People can now register in their respective areas without necessarily coming to Dutse to register, the gesture will definitely speed up the exercise.

According to him, the commission has a total of 40 registration centres across the state.

Jakada further told NAN that the agency was currently collaborating with Jigawa  Government, National Orientation Agency (NOA), Hadejia Ina Mafiya – a Community Based Organisation (CBO) and Kazaure Emirate Council in the areas of sensitisation and mobilisation of residents.

“So in total, we now have 40 enrollment centres in Jigawa.

“We are also collaborating with Jigawa Government, NOA, Hadejia Ina Mafiya, Kazaure Emirate Council in areas of sensitisation and mobilisation, Jakada explained.

He, therefore, urged the people to avail themselves the opportunity by visiting any of the centres close to their areas for registration.

The coordinator appreciated the efforts of the committee set up by the state to enlighten residents on the need to register and obtain identity cards.

“The committee set up by Jigawa Government to mobilise people is very important.

“This is because before the committee, turnout of people for registration was very poor, but now, people troop to the centres to register.

Farmers to pay five percent interest rate on government loans

The Nigerian Government said local farmers would pay five per cent interest rate for loans collected through the reforming of the Bank of Agriculture (BOA).

Agriculture and rural development minister, Audu Ogbe who spoke at Town Hall meeting on Agriculture in Dutse, Jigawa State, said the interest rate was part of government plans to ensure food sufficiency in the country.

Ogbe stated that the reform, expected to be concluded by December, would ensure farmers are shareholders of the bank and beneficiaries of the 5% interest rate to enable their farming.

The minister opined that the deficit in the availability of food in the country was as a result of the abandonment of local farmers who account for the highest population of food producers.

He reiterated that the Buhari-led administration would invest in agriculture. Ogbe said ten state governors have shown interest in the evolution of agriculture in the country.

The Emir of Dutse, Nuhu Mohammed Sanusi, urged the Nigerian government to also invest in infrastructural developments, saying it is an essential condition to food production.

Sanusi, who expressed delight at the interest rate, lamented the high interest rate farmers in his emirate pay to banks. He said the farmers pay as much as 19% interest rate on loans from banks.
