More People Still Arriving To Live In Britain Than Leaving — Report

kremlin

A total of 625,000 people moved to Britain and 351,000 people emigrated in the last six months, figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed on Thursday.

ONS said non-EU net migration was the highest since 2004, with 248,000 more non-EU citizens arriving than leaving Britain.

“Increases in immigration for both work and study have been seen in the most recent year, particularly for Asian citizens.

“The number of people arriving for post-graduate studies this year from countries such as China and India is up by 10 per cent,’’ ONS said.

The overall number of non-EU citizens coming to Britain had continued to add to the population, with 74,000 more non-EU citizens coming to the UK than leaving.

“This was the lowest estimate for EU net migration since 2012 and the lowest immigration level since 2014,’’ ONS added.

The report revealed the number of EU citizens coming to the UK for work had continued to fall.

In the most recent period, this was driven by a decrease in citizens from EU 15 countries, such as Germany, Spain and Italy, arriving in Britain with a definite job.

Net migration among EU8 citizens, which includes Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic, has seen a sharp decrease over the last two years.

“It is now estimated that 14,000 more citizens from those countries left the UK than arrived.

“This has been driven by a decrease in EU8 immigration, particularly for work, and an increase in emigration over the last two years.

“Away from Europe, citizens coming to work in Britain from around the world have seen a gradual increase over the last five years,’’ the study showed.

Court adjourns hearing suit seeking final forfeiture of money linked to Patience Jonathan

Patience Jonathan

In the suit, EFCC joined Patience Jonathan, Globus Integrated Services Ltd. and Finchley Top Homes Ltd. as respondents.

A Federal High Court will on Jan.15 continue to hear a suit seeking final forfeiture of about 8.4 million dollars and N7.4 billion found in bank accounts linked to a former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on April 20, secured an interim order for the forfeiture from Justice Mojisola Olatoregun in Lagos through an ex-parte (without notice) application.

In the suit, EFCC joined Patience Jonathan, Globus Integrated Services Ltd. and Finchley Top Homes Ltd. as respondents.

Also joined as respondents are Am-Pm Global Network Ltd., Pagmat Oil and Gas Ltd., Magel Resort Ltd. and Esther Oba.

Video evidence by the defence could not take place on Thursday as earlier scheduled because the court did not sit.

EFCC counsel, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo, had informed the court at the last adjourned date that he had an application for final forfeiture dated of May 8.

According to him, the application seeks an order of the court for a final forfeiture of sums of money listed in the application.

He supported the application with an affidavit deposed to on May 20, by Mr Orji Chukwuma, an EFCC operative.

Oyedepo urged the court to grant the application for final forfeiture.

However, Mr Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), counsel to the first respondent (Patience Jonathan), urged the court to refuse the application on the grounds that sufficient facts had not been placed before the court to warrant a final order.

According to Adedipe, the applicant’s case is that it found money in the accounts of the first respondent, which it suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities.

He argued that the first respondent was neither invited by the EFCC nor prosecuted.

Adedipe argued that the applicant (EFCC) failed to take the preliminary steps but headed to seek an order of forfeiture.

The counsel said that the practice fell short of prosecutorial procedures.

He argued that the depositions by the applicant that the funds represented proceeds of unlawful activities had not been substantiated, noting that Section 36 of the Constitution provided that a person should not be convicted of an offence, unless defined and punishment prescribed.

According to him, there is no crime known as “statutory suspicion.

He submitted that the onus rested on the EFCC to prove that the respondent had such amounts of money, and that they were obtained under false pretences or fraud.

He said that although there were depositions that the funds were obtained from “Women for Change and Bola Shagaya, there were, however, no evidence before the court to show that the funds were stolen.

He submitted that the application was vindictive, urging the court to dismiss it.

Also, Chief Mike Ozekhome, counsel to the third, fourth, fifth and sixth respondents, argued that the application was premature when judged by the provisions of the Advanced Fee Fraud Act.

Ozekhome said that the affidavit of the third respondent (Finchley Top Homes Ltd.) to show cause had not been taken.

According to the counsel, it is when same has been argued and the court finds no merit in it that the EFCC can be justified and better placed to bring the application.

He submitted that the third, fourth, fifth and sixth respondents filed affidavits to show cause.

The counsel said that exhibits labelled F1 to F6  were attached to the affidavits.

He said that the exhibits confirmed that the third respondent was a company, showed its certificate of incorporation and its board resolution that Patience Jonathan be made a signatory to it.

He added that the affidavits showed bank document indicating that the company’s account was signed by other persons who were also signatories.

Ozekhome also told the court that the third respondent made money from selling groceries, drinks and other items, adding that exhibit F5 showed video evidence of various outfits, legitimately run by the third respondent.

He prayed the court to allow the video exhibit to be shown in the court.

According to him, Exhibit F6 are manuals, catalogues and handbills indicating the ongoing legitimate concerns of the third respondent.

Ozekhome made similar arguments for the fourth, fifth and sixth respondents.

The Anambra State House of Assembly on Thursday reopened for sitting after two weeks the Police Command in the state sealed the complex.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the assembly was shut down following purported impeachment of the Speaker, Mrs Rita Maduagwu that led to crisis in the legislature.

NAN reports that the workers in the assembly were seen in their duty posts for business of the day but the lawmakers had yet to sit as at the time of the report.

The embattled speaker, Maduagwu entered the chamber with only one lawmaker, Mr Paschal Agbodike, representing Ihiala 2Constituency APGA and left immediately.

About 10 minutes after, the purported new Speaker, Mr Ikem Uzoezie walked in with the Majority Leader, Mr Victor Okoye, Minority leader, Mr Onyebuchi Offor , Mr Kingsley Iruba, ( Nnewi South), Mr Ikechukwu Umeh, (Aguata 1), and Mr Romanus Obi (Orumba North).

Other lawmakers were also seated at the assembly waiting for resumption of plenary.

Uzoezie told newsmen that he was at the complex to assess it after the police unsealed it adding that the lawmakers might sit if the need arose.

The factional speaker maintained that he was the substantive speaker as Maduagwu had been impeached over alleged highhandedness and misappropriation of funds.

Georgia elects Salome Zurabishvili as first female president

Salome ZurabishviliSalome Zurabishvili has won Georgia’s presidential election, becoming the first woman to hold the office.

With nearly all votes counted, the French-born ex-diplomat had 59 per cent of the vote with rival Grigol Vashadze on 40 per cent.

Ms Zurabishvili was backed by the ruling Georgian Dream party while Mr Vashadze was a united opposition candidate.

A new constitution is due to come into force, making the role of president largely ceremonial BBC reported.

Ms Zurabishvili, 66, was born in Paris after her parents fled Georgia in 1921 following its annexation by Soviet forces.

She took up a career in the French foreign service and was posted to the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, as ambassador in 2003. She later gave up her post and the then-president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, appointed her foreign minister.

Ms Zurabishvili has said she favours balancing Georgia’s relations with Russia and the West. Mr Vashadze who was also previously a foreign minister was seen as more pro-Western.

The runoff vote was the last time a president will be directly elected in Georgia, which is switching to parliamentary governance following constitutional reforms adopted last year, despite opposition protests.
However the election is also seen as an indicator of how parliamentary elections in 2020 could go.

Western countries are also watching the vote in a country seeking European Union and Nato membership.

The opposition has complained of voting irregularities and attacks on its campaigners, but this has been denied by the ruling party.

International observers said the first round of voting last month was held on an “uneven playing field”.

Tosyn Bucknor’s Husband, Sister And Friends Arrive Private Cemetery For Her Interment

After opening up her wake and funeral service up to the public that came in her hundreds to pay her their last respects, the body of departed media personality Tosyn Bucknor has arrived at a private cemetery in Ikoyi where she is being buried.

At the ultra-private Ikoyi Garden and Vault, the closest people to the deceased were seen arriving for her burial. Her husband Aurelien Boyer arrived first, after which her sister Funke Bucknor-Obruthe and friends Gbemi Olateru-Olagbegi, Lamide Akintobi and Kemi “Lala” Akindoju joined the family as they commit Tosyn to mother earth.

We gather that she’s being buried in a vault in which her father, the veteran singer and broadcaster Segun Bucknor was buried after his death in August 2017.

On ground to ward off prying eyes are security personnel who meticulously screen badges given to the few people who have access into the vault area. Unlike the service of songs that was held yesterday night, no major celebrities were spotted at the private burial.

Tosyn passed away on the night of Monday 19th November after complications from sickle cell disease which she had fought all her life. Thousands of fans and well wishers have expressed their shock at her sudden passing as she bore her health struggles bravely during her life.

Sri Lanka Parliament Cut PM’s Budget Amidst Political Crisis

Sri Lanka’s parliament on Thursday cut the budget of the Prime Minister’s office.

The move was to hinder disputed premier Mahinda Rajapaksa whose supporters boycotted the vote amid a week-long political crisis that shows no sign of ending.

Lawmakers opposed to Rajapaksa, who has lost two no-confidence votes in parliament, regard his administration as illegitimate.

They said he should not be able to use government money for his day-to-day expenses.

“This means the prime minister will be dysfunctional. We will bring a similar motion tomorrow to cut down the expenditure of all other ministers, said Ravi Karunanayake, the former Finance Minister.

Karunanayake proposed Thursday’s motion which passed 123 to none in the 225-member parliament.

The vote came more than a month after President Maithripala Sirisena triggered the crisis by ousting former Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe.

He replace Wickremesinghe with Rajapaksa, who was then in turn sacked by parliament.

Rajapaksa ruled as president from 2005-2015, a decade of rule that critics said became increasingly authoritarian and marred by nepotism and corruption.

He presided over a bloody government victory over separatist rebels from the Tamil minority in 2009, ending a 27-year civil war.

Rajapaksa and his loyalists denounced Thursday’s vote as “illegal and questioned the impartiality of parliament’s speaker.

“Speaker is acting completely illegally and arbitrarily.

We are not participating in such illegal meetings, Rajapaksa told reporters in parliament before Thursday’s proceedings started.

The atmosphere has cooled since Rajapaksa loyalists threw chairs and chilli paste at the speaker to try and disrupt a no-confidence motion almost two weeks ago.

The courts were next week expected to rule on whether Sirisena’s sacking of Wickremesinghe on Oct. 26 and then his dissolution of parliament on Nov. 9 were constitutional.

The latest political ructions have not led to widespread unrest and violence.

Rajapaksa is seen as a hero by many among Sri Lanka’s Buddhist majority for ending the war.

He has, however, been accused by diplomats of human rights abuses, particularly at the end of the conflict, which he denies.

7 practical tips to make you feel safer on your Taxify ride

7 practical tips to make you feel safer on your Taxify ride

From improved driver screenings to a share your ETA function, we’re watching out for you on every ride!

After a long day, all you want is a comfortable and safe ride home. To make your ride experience as pleasant as can be, we take many steps to improve service quality.

From improved driver screenings to a share your ETA function, we’re watching out for you on every ride!

Here’s a snapshot of seven practical tips to make the best out of your Taxify ride:

1. Stay safe before your driver arrives

Stay inside the building or in a safe location until your driver arrives, especially at night. Hanging around on the side of the road with a cellphone in your hand or your valuables at sight can be a risk. Remember, you’ll be notified when your driver arrives, so it’s reasonable to wait inside until then.

2. Double check the driver’s identity

When you are paired with a driver, you can see your driver’s photo, name, current rating, vehicle plate and model on your app. Be sure to cross check the vehicle in front of you against the one on the driver’s profile. If anything doesn’t add up, do not get in and make a report to Taxify via the in-app support tab.

3. Confirm your payment method

Using Taxify, you can choose between cash and card payments. Not to be taken by surprise at any point, make sure you select the preferred payment option before requesting a ride. For example, you shouldn’t pay in cash on a card trip. The payment options can be found from the top left corner, under your profile. You can also see your chosen payment method below your ride price estimate throughout your journey.

4. Keep your loved ones updated

With safety in mind, we have a Share My ETA function that appears on the bottom of the app, right under your driver’s profile. You can share your current trip details with trusted friends and family members during every ride. This makes it easier for loved ones to keep track of your journey and know when you’ve arrived.

5. Forgotten item(s)

Always do a quick scan of your seat and surroundings before exiting the vehicle. Remember, your property is your responsibility. Check that you do not leave any belongings behind at the end of your trip.  If you do, here is how you get your items back.

6. Help others have a great ride

You can help your driver better serve other riders like yourself by ensuring that you leave your Taxify clean for the next user. Remember, your driver has only one vehicle and you would like other passengers to have an experience as great as you did.

7. Let us know

Valuing the feedback of our customers is not just a buzzword for us. Your opinion helps us improve the user experience for everyone on the platform. Do report any serious incidents here

Rate. One of the ways we receive your feedback is through ratings after each ride. Remember to always rate your driver- as this helps us assess our service quality.

Report. You can easily send a report via the support platform on the app. Do this by clicking on the profile tab on the left-hand corner and scrolling to 'Ride History' and choosing the appropriate query to send or scrolling to ‘Support’ and under 'Your Conversations' starting a conversation with the team. Remember that you can also send an email to Nigeria@taxify.eu.

R&B sweetheart, Celine Dion accused of doing the ‘devil’s work’

Canadian R&B singer and vocalist Celine Dion recently partnered with fashion designers Iris Adler and Tali Milchberg, co-founders of the global children’s fashion brand NUNUNU to create a gender neutral clothing line for little kids.

An ad campaign for the clothing line, aptly named Celinununu was released about two weeks ago and since then it had sparked a bit of a controversy. The singer decided to go in a different or rather a more progressive direction with the brand, creating clothes she claims opens an avenue for creativity.

The ad begins with the singer being chased across a hallway, she is caught and immediately attempts to use her name to get out of the bind. “I am Celine Dion.” she says.

The scene then cuts to a flash back, in which she had entered a hospital to, (I believe), cast a spell, on newly born kids, black crosses appear overhead the babies and their clothes change from the stereotypical pink representing girls and blue representing boys, to black and white, with ‘New Order” written on them, and crosses and skulls draped on the attires. This creates a stir, hence the cause of the initial chase scene. The ad ends with her stating: “it’s Ok, I’m Celine Dion” while being taken away in handcuffs.

While some believe that the ad spawns creativity, others believe it too be a bit too dark and controversial for something relating to little kids.

She later stated that:

“The clothing line allows children to choose outside stereotypes and norms so they can bring from within their own tastes and preferences.”

“We help them feel free, creative, inspired, respectful of one another and happy in the world.

However, the idea did not please everyone. Former spiritual director to Saint Teresa of Calcutta, and current Senior priest and exorcist in the Diocese of Scranton Pennsylvania, Monsignor John Esseff, said to the National Catholic Register, “I’m convinced that the way this gender thing has spread is demonic. It’s false. I don’t even know how many genders there’s supposed to be now, but there are only two that God made.

“The devil is going after children by confusing gender. He continued. “When a child is born, what is the first things we say about that child? It’s a boy, or it’s a girl. That is the most natural thing in the world to say. But to say that there is no difference is satanic.

“People behind this are influencing children to disorder. This is definitely satanic.

“The devil is a liar and there are huge lies being told. This is being done for money, and there is divisiveness that comes from this — marks of the devil.

Celine Dion is yet to respond to this. But it is highly unlikely, that her ideals can be altered by the priest’s outburst.

In recent years, the idea of choosing a gender asides the one you are born in, has been a provocative topic in North America and some other, more progressive parts of the world, and a sensitive issue to so many individuals. So it is safe to assume that the singer, must have taken into account, the possible backlash and/or encouragement she would receive for spawning this clothing line idea.

Melete Attack: Group Urges Army To Remain Steadfast In War against Terrorism

A group of young Nigerians under the aegis of Patriotic Youth in Nigeria (PYN) has sent a heart-warming message to the Nigerian Army on the need to remain steadfast and resolute in the  war against terrorism.
The group specifically urged Nigerians to double their support for the Chief of Army Staff,  Lt Gen Tukur Buratai and other commanders leading the war.
PYN urged the army never to be deterred by the recent attack in Melete area of Borno State, which led to the death of some officers and soldiers on the battlefront .
Atawodi, the National President of the group while addressing a press conference on Wednesday, encouraged Nigerians to double their support for the Nigerian Army and other security agencies coordinating the anti-terrorism campaigns.
His words, “The last few days have been really challenging for the military hierarchy and for  President Buhari as well- uneasy lies the head that wears the crown, as is commonly said. Without a doubt, our military remains committed to securing Nigeria and Nigerians, this commitment often requires selfless sacrifice sometimes even the Ultimate Sacrifice.
“It is therefore very regrettable that whenever these valiant defenders encounter setback in their campaign to rid the land of bloodthirsty insurgents, the very ones being protected see it as another opportunity to ridicule, demean and sometimes even deride the role of the military in ensuring our peace and safety as Nigerians. Reasonable folks acknowledge that setbacks are a regular feature in the menu of success and the wise know that hardly is there any success story without a setback.
“The recent attack on the military in Metele, Borno State is highly regrettable; many officers and Nigerian soldiers lost their lives as admitted by the army. It was indeed a very sad event.
“We, the Patriotic Youths in Nigeria PYN, find it really appalling that in the midst of this calamity, some mischievous and unscrupulous persons have sought to make some political gain from it; this is downright shameful to say the least.
“War is always unpredictable and we all can agree that anyone can start a war but nobody can ever tell how it will go or when it will end. As sophisticated as the United States of America is, the US Army suffered the hugest recorded casualty- in men and machinery- in Afghanistan, 9 years after the anti terror campaign started i.e. in 2010 when they lost as much as 499 soldiers. Note that the number is just one less than 500 US Army soldiers lost while fighting in the same locale after nine years! Similarly, they lost 418 soldiers in the following year 2011.
“Why did we have to bring out all this statistics? We did this to show to all who may be genuinely concerned, that a setback in a war does not mean a defeat.  Whilst it is not our desire that such occurrence should happen again, it is important we put things in proper perspective.
“At this critical time the army needs our support more than ever before. This should not be a time for partisan politics. The desire of the terrorist group Boko Haram is to divide us further by any means. When we begin to help share their propaganda video, we are ignorantly and maybe maliciously propagating their evil narratives.
“Nevertheless the Nigerian Army must be commended for their conduct in this battle and despite this recent setback, it is important that we do not lose sight of where we are coming from as a nation; only a few years ago, this same terrorist group had captured and controlled totally over 14 local governments in the north eastern part of Nigeria. They even hoisted flags and collected taxes as though they were a legal and sovereign authority.

Experts make case for independence of public media at Highway Africa 2018

Cross session of participants at Highway Africa Conference 2018 in Grahamstown, South Africa….. PHOT: PHOTO: TWITTER/HIGHWAY AFRICA

Experts in the African media industry has called for absolute independence of media operation without governments and institutional interference.

The experts spoke during a panel of discussion on public media and citizenship on the first day of Highway Africa Conference in Grahamstown, South Africa.

The conference is taking place at Rhodes University, South Africa from Thursday, November 29 to Friday, November 30. The 22-year old conference focuses on the impact of the internet and mobile technologies on journalism and media.

One of the speakers, Delta Ndou, who was the head of the digital services of Zimbabwe Newspaper Group between 2015 and 2017, said for government-owned media houses to discharge their duties without fear of being chastised or punished by the authorities, they must be truly free from interference and direct control of state authorities.

He insisted that political interference has hindered the professional growth of journalism in spite of constitutional provisions which seek to insulate public media from government control.

“The constitution may state we can have editorial independence but if it isn’t actualized it won’t be a reality,” Ndou said.

“There should be a clear buffer or institution that manages the public broadcasters and not government officials.”

While Ndou blamed government officials for the problems of public media using Zimbabwe as an example, she, however, said there were journalists who were willing tools in the hands of crooked politicians.

A media professional, Dr Maria de Lurdes Mangueleze, who spoke at another panel, noted that in some instances, private media houses, are stifled by the government

Panellists, however, insisted that it was possible to reinforce the credibility of public media.

A panellist from Mozambique, Isaias Fuel opined that government-owned media must give room to oppositions or opinions other than those of the government of the day.

The editor, digital news, South African Broadcast Corporation (SABC), Izak Minnaar, who was also part of the panel, said having an alternative source of getting finances may aid the independence of public.

While citing the case of SABC, he said the 70 per cent of its funds were sourced from sponsorship and adverts while funds from the South African government accounts for between 3-4 per cent of its revenue.

Fuel argued that independence of the public media can also be enhanced if the control of such media is handled by the national parliament instead of the executive.

Ndou, however, said the opening up of airwaves and revoking legislation that hampers operations of media would guarantee editorial independence with country parliament having the sole responsibility of approving, sanctioning of managers of public media.

She also listed the creation of independent oversight institutions and the appointment of professionals, not politicians, to head public media.
