Harmattan: Experts Advise Nigerians, Farmers To Take Precaution Against Disasters

As the harmattan season comes with dry and dusty weather, experts have advised Nigerians, especially farmers to take precautionary measures against man-made disasters during the period.

The experts gave the advice in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, on the effect of the harmattan season on agriculture.

A soil scientist, Prof. Victor Chude said that farmers should avoid indiscriminate bush burning after they have harvested their crops.

Chude said that farmers should gather trashes at various spots before burning bushes as a way of clearing the land before the next cropping season.

He said that bush burning during harmattan could be very disastrous as it could affect the neighbouring farms with economic trees and destroy important micro nutrients in the soil.

“We will not advise farmers to just set the whole farm ablaze as a way of clearing his land because it will be difficult to control.

“If it is a forest area where the undergrowth is very thick, the duration of burning will be longer and this is very destructive to some essential soil micro-organisms in the soil that perform the job of “mineralisation of nutrients in their organic form and make them soluble.

“When those micro-organisms are destroyed, the nutrient will remain in the organic form and in terms of availability to crops during cropping, it will be a problem.

“What we advise them is to first slash and then do spot burning; if there are trees, they should do selective cutting of trees so that the whole place is not exposed to erosion,’’ he said.

Chude observed that most of the wild fire particularly in the savanna regions of the country was caused by herdsmen who were looking for fresh sprouts.

He said that they set the bush ablaze because after the burning, with residual moisture dews, new sprouts would come up to be used to feed their cattle and to chase rats and other small ruminants.

He said in developed economies, fodders were harvested during the wet season and stored to be given out to animals during the dry season, adding that the method could that be explored.

Another soil scientist, Dr Olaseinde Adeshida, told NAN that bush burning, whether the result of a wildfire or a controlled burn, affects not only the appearance of the landscape, but the quality of the soil.

“The landscape may quickly recover after a fire, with fresh new growth and emerging seedlings.

“However, bush burning has a negative effect on soil conditions, and soil may take much longer to recover, according to the National Resources Conservation Service.

“Bush burning can cause the soil to lose its ability to absorb and retain water.

“After a fire, the top layer of soil may become water repellent. This causes rain to drain off the soil without absorbing into the ground.

“Once fire consumes bushes, their roots no longer pull moisture into the soil.

“Additionally, the loss of shade that the bushes once provided means soil moisture is more likely to evaporate,’’ he said.

Adeshida said that bush burning during the harmattan season might cause the soil to be less stable “and erosion is a major concern after a fire’’.

“Shallow-rooted plants are affected by unstable soil, as they depend on vegetation, such as shrubs and bushes, to hold the soil in place,’’ he said.

Adeshida, however, said that bush burning exposes the soil to the sun adding that the lack of shade raised the temperature of the soil.

“If the fire also caused the soil to become water repellent, the soil will be even warmer due to the lack of moisture.

“Depending on the ecosystem, this warmer soil may hinder or encourage seed germination. Microbes present in the soil, if not killed by the burning, may not survive in the warmer soil.

“Many plants depend on soil microbes and although they may grow, will not thrive if microbes are absent from the soil,’’ he said.

He, however, suggested the way out by targeted extension advocacy, enforcing legislation against bush burning, strategic  bush burning and cleaning.

Prof. Sani Mashi, the Director-General of Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), had recently announced that the severity of harmattan period would be higher and longer over the northern states.

He said that this was due to the proximity of the northern states to the Sahara desert compared to the South, in NiMet in 2018/2019 dry season forcast.

“During the harmattan season, sunny and hazy conditions are expected over the northern states and central cities down to the inland cities of the southern parts with thick dust haze conditions which can impair horizontal visibility to less than 1,000m (1km).

“The harmattan season is characterised by the prevalence of dry and dusty wind consisting of fine particulate matters emanating from the Sahara desert blowing southward into the country.’’

Mashi warned that the expected reduction in visibility in the coming weeks might disrupt flight operations through cancellation and delay of flights at some airports across the country.

He advised road users to be careful and avoid speeding, especially during early morning period when horizontal visibility would be impaired by fog, mist or dust haze.

According to him, these weather conditions can increase traffic congestion or even cause accidents.

Mashi also warned that bush burning should be avoided as the dryness and strong wind could increase fire incidences and cause severe crop damage at harvesting period.

“The public are advised to take adequate water during the harmattan period to avoid dehydration and heatstroke, he said.

Merkel set for late G20 arrival after 'serious' plane troubles

German Chancellor Angela Merkel steps down from Airbus "Konrad Adenauer" on late November 29, 2018 on the tarmac of Cologne's airport after an emergency landing. Germany’s air force said Friday a serious technical problem on Chancellor Angela Merkel’s plane had forced an emergency landing and delayed her arrival at the G20 summit by more than 12 hours.

The pilot had to use a satellite phone after the malfunction knocked out radio communications, including a backup system, as he prepared the unscheduled landing in Cologne.

The latest embarrassing glitch for the German military forced Merkel to instead take a commercial flight from Madrid to Buenos Aires with a vastly reduced delegation and miss scheduled talks with several world leaders.

Merkel was due to arrive late for the traditional G20 “family photo” of heads of state and government, and it was unclear whether she could reschedule planned talks with US President Donald Trump and China’s Xi Jinping.

Shortly after takeoff from Berlin on Thursday evening, Merkel’s Airbus A340-300 was forced to turn back over Dutch airspace and divert toward the German city of Cologne, the headquarters of the government fleet.

The glitch also disabled the mechanism for dumping fuel, meaning the plane was heavy with a full tank and had to brake hard on landing, with fire engines standing by on the runway.

“It was a serious malfunction,” Merkel told reporters travelling with her aboard the “Konrad Adenauer”, a former Lufthansa airlines jet built in 1999 and named after post-war Germany’s first chancellor.

Merkel’s spokeswoman later stressed that there was never any “danger to life and limb” of those aboard.

Failure of ‘single component’
The German air force on Friday ruled out sabotage through hacking or other means, with a spokesman saying that “there is absolutely no indication of a criminal act”.

The cause of the troubles was “the failure of a single component”, an electronic distributor box, said Colonel Guido Henrich, commander of the government air fleet.

Merkel had to spend the night in a hotel in nearby Bonn because no replacement plane with crew was immediately available.

Early Friday, after just three hours of sleep, she was taken by a German air force plane to Madrid.

From here, instead of flying her usual Airbus jet with bedroom suite, secure communications and an anti-missile system, she and her trimmed down entourage boarded an Iberia plane for the flight across the Atlantic.

She was due to arrive in Buenos Aires at around 2100 GMT — without her husband Joachim Sauer, who after the plane troubles opted to skip the event.

A back-up government plane was meanwhile being sent to Argentina for Merkel’s return flight.

Rats, faults and intruders
For the German Luftwaffe it was the latest in a string of mishaps to make headlines in recent years.

In October, Finance Minister Olaf Scholz had to take a commercial flight home from a summit in Bali, Indonesia after rats had chewed through cables of the Konrad Adenauer, disabling the aircraft for days.

In June, problems with the hydraulics system on the same plane forced President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to take an alternative aircraft to Minsk.

And in 2015, technical problems with the Konrad Adenauer forced Merkel and five ministers to make a flight to India on a A310 military troop transporter.

In a bizarre incident involving Merkel’s official plane in 2013, a 24-year-old intruder high on drugs and wearing just underpants managed to get aboard the parked jet in Cologne and stage what media termed “a one-man party” before he was arrested.

The German armed forces, which complains of being overstretched and underfunded, has long been dogged by a series of equipment failures that have also grounded fighter jets and kept submarines and tanks out of service.

Its G36 assault rifle had trouble firing straight at high temperatures and is being phased out.

Last year Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen took an Airbus A400M to Lithuania to show off the new transport aircraft, but engine trouble grounded it and forced her to return home on a decades-old Transall C-160 transporter.

100 Resident Doctors In LASUTH To Donate Blood

The Association of Residents Doctors, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, says its members will donate 100 pints of blood as contribution to the development of the community and patients care.

The association’s President, Dr Ajibola Salami, made this known during a blood donation exercise by the doctors in LASUTH, held on Friday in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the exercise was part of activities lined up for the association’s 2018 Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting with the theme: “A Healthier Nigeria: Roads and Road Blocks.’’

Salami said: “The blood donation is very important, because as doctors in LASUTH, we know a lot of people are dying due to absence of blood and blood products.

“Sometimes, it is difficult to find some blood groups that you have to go all the way to farther hospitals, including private ones, yet we still do not get blood products.

“So, doctors will donate blood; we are going to donate one pint of blood per doctor, that is, we will be donating 100 pints as we expect 100 doctors to donate.

“This is our contribution to availability of blood and its products within the hospital.’’

The association president said he had been a blood donor for more than seven years and donated once every year.

He urged members of the public to also donate blood voluntarily and contribute their quota to the development of the community and patient care in the state.

“We need people to be aware that they can donate blood freely and contribute to society generally, blood is not enough in our hospitals.

“When we have emergencies and surgeries, we need blood; we do not have artificial blood, but blood is collected from people and given to others in need of it.

“So, it is never too much,’’ Salami said.

Also, a donor, Dr Abdusalam Moruf, who is a past president of the association, said he had been a voluntary blood donor for five years.

According to him, it is a tradition he has sustained, having realised that the aim of donating blood includes saving lives.

“There are a lot of benefits for someone to donate blood, both to the donor and those to receive blood, and of course, the gratification you will receive from it as a donor.

“It is encouraged that a healthy individual should donate at least twice or three times in a year, because, most times, medically, the red cells in our bodies are changed every 90 days.

“Donating blood also helps to nourish oneself, so that you are replacing the old blood in your body; there is a lot of medical benefits to that as well,’’ Moruf said.

Another donor, a Senior Medical Officer 1, Surgical Unit, LASUTH, Dr Salawudeen Taofik, said people do not lose anything by donating blood.

Taofik said donating blood did not have anything to do with age, weight, race or religion.

“However, if you are fit, it is encouraged to donate, and it helps your blood system to regulate.

“I started to donate blood from 400 level as a medical student till date; I have been a donor for 12 years and I donate to help patients in need of blood.

“It is difficult to get blood; sometimes patients are financially constrained to get.

“I urge people to donate blood. You will not lose anything; be compassionate and help to save lives,’’ the medical officer said.

NAN reports that other activities lined up for the AGM include a scientific conference and medical outreach for public servants at the Public Service Office in Alausa, Ikeja.

Wilder, Fury ready to rumble in LA showdown

LOS ANGELES, CA – NOVEMBER 27: Deontay Wilder meets with firefighters at LAFD Station 3 on November 27, 2018 in Los Angeles, California. Meg Oliphant/Getty Images/AFP

Deontay Wilder will aim to rekindle America’s love affair with heavyweight boxing on Saturday when he faces Britain’s Tyson Fury in a high-stakes showdown of undefeated fighters.

As the reigning World Boxing Council champion, Wilder is the latest custodian of a belt which has been worn by some of the heavyweight division’s most iconic names stretching back over more than 50 years.

Sonny Liston, Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Joe Frazier and Mike Tyson head the who’s who of Wilder’s predecessors, evoking an era when heavyweight boxing was an integral part of the US sporting landscape.

Yet as Wilder prepares for the eighth defense of a title he has held since 2015, he remains a virtual unknown.

At the age of 33, Wilder has compiled an impressive record which includes 40 victories, no defeats, with 39 knockouts.

But his unblemished record and undeniable punching power have yet to capture the imagination of American sports fans.

Even now, three years into his reign as champion, he is sometimes mistaken for NBA superstar LeBron James.

That could change on Saturday when the 6ft 7in Wilder faces off against Fury, the trash-talking “Gypsy King” who is also unbeaten, with 27 wins from 27 fights, 19 inside the distance.

For Wilder, Saturday’s fight at the Staples Center is an opportunity to announce himself to a significant audience.

It is the first time he is the feature attraction on a pay-per-view television card. An explosive display against Fury will burnish his box-office appeal.

‘The baddest man’
“America has a mighty man in me,” Wilder boasted at an ill-tempered press conference in Los Angeles on Wednesday. “America has the baddest man on the planet.

“I put in the hard work to make it here. I’ve grinded and worked. There’s no way I’m going to let a man come from another country and take what I’ve been building.”

Victory for Wilder or Fury will thrust them to the front of the queue to face Britain’s Anthony Joshua, holder of the International Boxing Federation, World Boxing Association and World Boxing Organization heavyweight belts.

While several obstacles would need to be overcome before a money-spinning Joshua fight can happen, the clamour for a unification bout could become irresistible.

For Joshua’s eventual challenger to be Wilder, he must overcome the imposing 6ft 9in frame of Fury, a man on a mission who returned to the ring in April after a two-year absence following a battle with depression, drink and drug abuse.

Three years ago, Fury stunned the boxing world after defeating champion Wladimir Klitschko to claim the WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO and lineal titles.

The high of that victory however was to be followed by a descent into despair. Fury, who was subsequently stripped of those belts amid two failed drug tests, recently revealed he had tried to commit suicide.

“I just wanted to die so bad, I gave up on life,” Fury said.

But with his demons overcome, and his licence restored, Fury returned earlier this year, stopping Albanian journeyman Sefer Seferi after four rounds in April before outpointing little-known Francesco Pianeta in August.

Comeback too soon?
Whether those two fights are adequate preparation for the challenge of Wilder remains to be seen.

While former heavyweight champions such as Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson believe Fury has the skill and power to overcome Wilder, other fighters fear the bout has come too early in his comeback.

“I’m always going to be rooting for the Union Jack,” said British heavyweight Dereck Chisora. “But I believe Fury has taken the fight too early…when he gets hit by Wilder, it’s goodnight.”

Fury, true to form, is having none of it.

“I’m going to box his face off,” Fury said. “On Saturday night, Deontay Wilder is going to be known as the guy who got knocked out by Tyson Fury,” added the Briton, gleefully mocking Wilder for his relatively low profile amongst US sports fans.

“He needs me. He’s made seven defences but he’s still unknown in this country. I went down the street yesterday and asked 50 people if they knew who Deontay Wilder was and only two said they did, and they were boxing fans.”

Lewis and Holyfield, meanwhile, believe Fury’s chances of victory will hinge on his ability to take the fight into the later rounds while evading Wilder’s right hand.

Wilder, however, demonstrated he is more than capable of lasting over the distance with a gutsy 10th round knockout of the dangerous Cuban Luis Ortiz in March.

The American, who looked authentically angered by Fury in Wednesday’s face off, promised a brutal finish.

“I’m gonna beat his ass and then knock him out,” Wilder said. “I promise you this, he will go down. I don’t know when it’s coming. But it’s coming.”

The monarch revealed that residents and farmers in Maiduguri are still being killed and kidnapped.

The Shehu of Borno, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Abubakar Umar Ibn Garbai El-Kenemi, has expressed the fears residents still face from Boko Haram to President Muhammadu Buhari.

He revealed this when President Buhari paid him a courtesy visit at his palace in Maiduguri on Wednesday, November 28.

The monarch revealed that residents and farmers in the state capital cannot move beyond 10 kilometers without being killed or kidnapped.

He said, "On behalf of the traditional institution in Borno, I want to commend Your Excellency for the commitment you have given towards ending the lingering crisis of Boko Haram.

"It is unfortunate that despite all efforts put in place to restore peace in our land and the North East, we the people of Borno State are still under Boko Haram siege.

"Nobody can dare move out of Maiduguri by 10 kilometres without being confronted/attacked by Boko Haram."

The monarch also revealed that communities in Konduga, Damboa, Mafa and other local government areas have been razed down in the last two weeks.

He pleaded to the federal government to review the strategy to tackle the activities of the insurgents in the region.

President Buhari urged troops to show more commitment in fighting Boko Haram despite scores of losses in a recent assault during his visit to the northeastern state.

He made the remark while addressing soldiers at the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Annual Conference.

Man, 20, Drowns During Friend’s Birthday Party In Aba

A 20-year-old man, simply identified as Chidiebere David, drowned on Thursday night in the swimming pool of a new but popular hotel on Margret Avenue, GRA, Aba in Abia.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Abia, Mr Geoffrey Ogbonna, confirmed the incident on Friday.

“The man is about 20 years old. His name is Chidiebere David. He accompanied his friends to a birthday party in the hotel and got drowned there. That was exactly what happened,’’ he said.

Ogbonna however did not say if the police was foreclosing further investigations into the matter.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that the deceased went with his friends who were over 16 in number to the hotel to celebrate the birthday of one of them.
Chidiebere who hailed from Imo died at the pool with no one realising that he had drowned until sometimes later.

NAN further gathered that when the deceased colleagues saw his body inside the pool and made frantic efforts to save him, they discovered that he had died.

The relatives of the young man were said to have later arrived at the scene, taken his body and deposited at a morgue close to the hotel.

An anonymous source within the hotel told NAN that the friends of the deceased were arrested and taken into custody same night by policemen from Aba Area Command.
