American Author, Nora Roberts Addresses Tomi Adeyemi’s Plagiarism Accusation, Releases Statement

Famed American bestselling author, Nora Roberts, smarting from the unfounded allegation of plagiarism made by Nigerian-American writer Tomi Adeyemi has reacted by penning an open latter.

Adeyemi, a 25-year-old Harvard graduate had used Twitter to accuse Roberts, 68, of stealing the book titled “Of Blood and Bone from her own fantasy novel “Children of Blood and Bone and “shamelessly profiting off it.

Adeyemi soon received numerous basing as went on to tweet an apology, explaining that Roberts reached out to her to clarify. However, she did not take down the tweet where she accused Roberts, leaving fans to continue to criticise the writer.

Roberts, writing a long post on her blog, addressed the issue in a post titled “Mob Rule on Social Media. revealing that her team reached out to Adeyemi’s asking that the tweet be taken down, but no response has been gotten.

Read the post below:

MOB RULE BY SOCIAL MEDIA

I’m not on Twitter. I’ve said before and will say again, I’d rather be poked in the eye with a burning stick than tweet. I’m only on Instagram and Facebook because the amazing Laura runs the show.

I write. I spend my days working, my evenings either working or with my family. Or zoned in front of the TV, basically brain dead.

I don’t spend much time on social media. I recognize its power, I appreciate its ability to connect writers with readers. And I also understand how easily it can be weaponized to incite flame wars. So I’m very careful with my use of it–and Laura is even more so.

I write. It’s what I do. What I love and what I’ve spent three decades learning how to do well. Or as well as I possibly can.

But there are a lot of authors who spend a great deal of time on social media. Some are absolute geniuses with the tools and use them beautifully.

Others. Not so much.

I don’t believe and have never believed in taking personal issues onto public forums. I don’t believe, and have never believed–will never believe–in a writer attacking another writing on a public forum. It’s unprofessional, it’s tacky and the results are, always, just always, ugly.

Recently another writer used her social media forums to baselessly, recklessly accuse me of stealing the title of her book–which is bullshit right off–to attempt to profit from this theft. She had no facts, just her emotions, and threw this out there for her followers.

First, let’s address the particular title which happens to be similar. I titled this particular book, wrote this book, turned this book into my publisher nearly a year before her book–a first novel–was published. So unless I conquered the time/space continuum, my book was actually titled before hers. Regardless, you can’t copyright a title. And titles, like broad ideas, just float around in the creative clouds. It’s what’s inside that counts.

It’s just a title.

By accusing me, in public, of attempting to ‘shamelessly profit’ off of her creativity, she incited her readers into attacking me–on her feed, then on my pages, then on the internet in general. She did nothing to stop this. I have been accused of theft, of trying to use this first time writer–whose book has been well received–for my own profit. To ride her coattails as I have no originality. This after more than thirty years in the business, more than two hundred books.

I was accused of plagiarism–for a title–of stealing her ideas–though I had never heard of her book before this firestorm, have never read her book.

And trust me, I never will now.

This is what happens when a reckless statement is made on social media. It becomes a monstrous lie that spreads and grows and escalates.

I don’t know this woman; she doesn’t know me. She lit the match, foolishly. Perhaps being young and new and so recently successful she doesn’t fully understand the relationship between a writer and her readers, or the power of an ugly insinuation posted on Twitter. But, God, you should know how tools work before you use them.

We should all take a lesson here. Think, then think again, before you post. Be sure of your facts before you take a shot at someone. Be prepared for the vicious fallout once you do.

Could you have dug a little deeper to check facts? Could you have contacted the person in question and had a conversation? In this case–writer to writer–could you have spoken to your publisher, your agent, about the fact that a title can’t be stolen in the first place?

Could you have, perhaps, checked the timeline? If your book came out a few months before the other book (and if you know SQUAT about publishing) you’d certainly realize it was written, titled and in production when yours hit the stands. So how could a damn title be ‘stolen’?

To be accused of plagiarism by some faceless reader on the internet, one who felt entitled to spread that lie gutted me. I’ve been plagiarized, and will always have an open wound from the blow. To me, plagiarism is the most terrible sin a writer can commit.

I have worked my entire career to build a foundation of professionalism, of teamwork with my publisher, to create a community with other writers, and to show readers I value them–not just with communication, but by doing my best to give them good books.

No one who knows me would believe any of these accusations. But that’s the problem. Those making them don’t know me, they simply lash out because they can.

This foolish and false statement has damaged my reputation. Vicious and ugly accusations and names have been tossed at me when I did nothing but write and title a book.

While this writer issued a kind of retraction after I reached out to her, it didn’t stop some of her readers from calling me a liar, and worse. We reached out again, asking her to put out the fire.

We’ve had no response, not from her, not from her agent.

Shame on them.

I had every intention of letting this go, until the flames kept burning, until the attacks kept coming. And nothing was done by the person who lit the match to stop it.

I don’t like taking my issues public. But I will stand up for myself. I will defend my integrity and my reputation and my work.

I’m appalled by this, sickened by it. I’m disgusted that people who don’t know me would feel free to say vicious things about me. I know very well the anonymity of the internet can foster such nastiness, but it still disgusts me.

Words have great power–to harm, to heal, to teach, to entertain. A writer, one who wants to forge a career with words, should understand that. And use them, as well as the tools at her disposal, wisely.

I’ve very deliberately not mentioned the name of the writer who started this, or the title of her book or mine. I don’t want this to escalate any more than it has. I don’t want my readers to go on the attack. It’s not cool. I simply want to set the record straight.

I’m Nora Roberts. I’m a hard-working writer, and an honest one.

That’s it.

Three Dons Emerge Co-Winners Of 2018 NAS Prize For Life Sciences

EJIKEME OMENAZU and OYENIRAN APATA

LAGOS – Three distinguished Nigerian scientists have emerged co-winners of the 2018 Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS) gold medal prize for life sciences.

This followed their outstanding research works in the area of molecular genetics and biotechnology addressed to solving significant health problems affecting mankind.

Professor Gabriel Ogunmola, a Fellow of Academy of Science (FAS) and Chairman, 2018 NAS Science Prize Committee, announced this during a press briefing in Lagos on Thursday.

He named the awardees as Professor Wasiu Lamre Adeyemo from University of Lagos, Dr. Emmanuel Oluwadare Balogun from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, and Professor Temidayo Ogundiran from University of Ibadan.

Prof. Ogunmola said the co-winners were selected for their significant scientific achievements in using the cutting edge and expertise of molecular genetics to understand the basis of cleft lip and palate (CLP) in Sub-Saharan Africa.

This, he stressed, involved an “ingenious application of a template for developing transgenic tse-tse flies to achieve biological control of trypanosomiasis and advanced an original contribution to the understanding genetic disparity in cancer between people of African descent and other races.

While highlighting the in-depth scientific researches and discoveries made by the scientists, Prof. Ogunmola decried the insignificant financial contributions of the Federal Government to support research works in Nigerian institutions of higher learning.

He, therefore, called on the Federal Government to revive the Science Innovation Fund (SIF) initiated during former President Olusegun Obasanjo administration to boost government support for scientific researches and retooling of science laboratories, adding that this would also address the problem of brain drain from the country.

Ogunmola explained that Professor Adeyemo’s research had been in the area of molecular genetics of the environmental aetiology of cleft lip and palate (CLP) and craniofacial defects, which he said had promoted collaborative activities between University of Lagos, University of Iowa, University of Pittsburgh, University of Dundee, and other African Universities.

He added that Professor Adeyemo and his research group had taken several giant steps towards understanding the genetic causes on non-syndromic clefts in Nigeria and African populations.

The group, he added, had been able to genotype 4,000 samples from Sub-Sahara Africa using a global power chip with 2.2 SNPs for the first genome-wide association studies GWAS on orofacial cleft in Africa (Nigeria, Ghana and Ethiopia) for orofacial cleft.

According to Ogunmola, another co-awardee, Dr. Balogun’s expertise cut across the life sciences and focused on molecular parasitology, Structural, Biology, and Genomics, applying them for drug discovery studies against African endemic tropical diseases.

He stressed that his research group found that the midgat of mosquitoes contains a 45 k Da glycoprotein that is capable of killing trypanosomes.

Nigeria planning to sell electricity to Burkina Faso

Electricity supply in Nigeria

A power firm company has decided it's left with no choice than to find reliable buyers for the rejected power generated in Nigeria.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited, Lamu Audu, has revealed that Nigeria is planning to sell electricity to a neighbouring country, Burkina Faso.

While speaking at the Annual Power and Utilities Roundtable organised by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in Lagos on Thursday, Lamu revealed that out of the two 922 megawatts generated on his company's network, only 600 to 650MW are taken by distribution companies in Nigeria.

The MD of the company that operates Kainji and Jebba Hydropower plants said the company is left with no choice than to find reliable buyers for the rejected power generated.

"We are left with no option than to sell the balance to other African countries that are willing to pay. In fact, they are willing to take up the whole electricity invoice at a higher price than what Nigerians are willing to pay. We are talking to Burkina Faso on this," he said.

He noted that his company is not the first to take such an action as Nigerian power firms have been known to sell electricity to Togo, Benin Republic, and other African countries.

Edo To Start Refurbishment Of Public Schools

Godwin Obaseki

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has disclosed his administration’s resolve to commence refurbishment of public schools in the state, urging for support and cooperation of the School-Based Management Committees.

Obaseki disclosed this during a training for School-Based Management Committee of Emotan Primary School in Benin City, Edo State, on Thursday.

Obaseki said that the state government would work in agreement with the committee, communities and other relevant stakeholders on the refurbishment of schools, noting, “President Muhammadu Buhari, through the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), has provided enough fund to embark on this purpose. Massive revamp will commence in the state soon.

The governor said the School-Based Management Committees would include members of the communities, parents and stakeholders in the governance and administration of schools across the state, as they will act as catalysts for progress.

He added that his administration had decided to revamp the state’s basic education system, noting, “If I achieved nothing as governor of Edo State, I want it to be on record that I came and turned around the basic education system in Edo State for good.

He continued, “The Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (Edo-BEST) programme was introduced to enable us go back to the foundation which must be solid as this will enable our children to face the challenges ahead.

“What is taught in the first six to nine years of education will certainly affect the child, as it will become difficult to cope with the challenges of life if they get it wrong at that level.

The governor maintained that for such a system to work, the schools must be run properly, and the head teachers should be able to monitor the teachers daily using Information Communication Technology (ICT) gadgets.

“We can’t play politics with education and the lives of our children. The whole idea of creating multiple schools to have multiple head teachers is not right. We can’t have three schools in one premise; it will not work. For those schools that need to be merged, we will merge them and continue to train our teachers and improve their welfare.

Kizz Daniel proves he can do no wrong on ''No Bad Songz'' Album [Review]

Here is the first listen take of Kizz Daniel's sophomore album, ''No Bad Songz'', released on Friday, November 30th.

Kizz Daniel released his second studio album, ''No Bad Songz'' in the early hours of Friday, November 30, 2018.

The singer has grown major leaps since he released his debut album, ''New Era'' in 2016. Without help from any A-list artiste, Kizz Daniel [then Kiss Daniel] forced the attention of the industry towards his direction with chart topping singles like, 'Woju', 'Laye' and 'Mama'.

The album itself was adjudged in some quarters as a near classic cementing his name as one of those who succeeded at the first time of coming out.

A lot has however happened since that time. From his well documented contract situation with former label G-Worldwide, to setting up his own imprint, 'FlyBoy Inc', changing his stage name and having unbridled control over his features, the boy has fully grown and this much has been witnesssed in his music.

Here is my first listen review of Kizz Daniel's ''No Bad Songz'' album

1. 'Gods' – There is something about Kizz Daniel and his opening songs. On his debut album, the first track was called 'New King' and now he takes it a step further opening the project with a dedication to the gods.

The song begins with a comical stutter, the beat is banging and Kizz is talking his talk. This is that braggadocious and swaggy 'walking through your hood' to reintroduce myself kind of talk. This is that type of music that reminds you of a traditional setting where liquors are poured on the floor to pay homage to the gods. A confident way to kick things off and announce his return.

2. 'No Do' – The pre-released record still bangs hard, the perfect motivation anthem for that Nigerian hustling to break bread.

3. 'Tere' ft Diamond Platnumz – There is an African party on the horizon, with the production exploding into a wide range of waste shaking riffs.

''I no want Chioma, I no want Sarafina'', not really sure if there is any connection to Davido's girl or that South African movie here but this is a banger and Diamond's vocals complements his quite well. His verse is sweet and they somehow work this to become a sweet pop tune.

4. 'One Ticket' ft Davido – Jam! Jam!! Jam!!!

Warning: no matter how many times you have heard this song before, you will have no choice but to bop to this. Can we talk about how Davido delivers one of his best guest verses of the year or the madness that MajorBangz brought on the production? Tempted to put this on replay.

5. 'Oyibe' – 'Shabalistical', every time we have heard this signature intro on a song this year, that song was a hit back to back. I like the highlife feel to this. He is talking money, another one in the long list of songs like 'Wetin We Gain'. I wish he did more with this.

6. 'Time No Dey' – Reggae music is in the building. This is interesting, he is building up a story, his vocals are filling me with joy. He keeps the verses quite short. I can envision him performing this song with a live band and the crowd going wild. Good record.

7. 'Maye' – Slow buildup, Kizz is soaring, that comical voice that has become a recent feature on his songs is back. This song sounds like 'Time No Dey' Part II, he even mentions it in his lyrics. The drums damnnn, Mid tempo tune, why is this giving me some deja vu of 'Jombo' on his first album, a slower version that is.

8. 'Bad' ft Wretch 32 – UK artist Wretch 32 is the featured act on this. Kizz is actually singing. Wretch is rapping and singing, killing this. This is that music that you play when you want to convince someone's daughter to give you her number, then something more. Another favourite.

9. 'Ghetto' ft Nasty C – I like this, telling the story of the streets, the hood side of him finally showing. Nasty's verse is smooth, this kid is brilliant, whether rapping or singing, he makes it seamless. There is no rush to their verses, but the message packs a punch.

10. 'Somebody Dey' ft DJ Xclusive & Demmie Vee – We just had to have that 'shaku shaku' song added to it. Despite his best attempt at colouring it, this still comes off as something you have heard many times this year, packed with dreary lyrics, not for me.

11. 'Ayee' – This song is confusing, comes off as simplistic and bare. There is something about the beat that pushes you to listen to the end, might grow after multiple listens but not really working for now.

12. 'Happy' – I like the way the drums and keys are coming off. This is good. Kizz's is vocally doing all sorts, gentle but enticing, not too pop clean but pretty smooth. This is an elite level of toasting and he comes through quite well.

13. 'Ja' – Wasn't prepare for the ominous instrumentals, Kizz is on that Yoruba tip, talking about elections and PVC, how to live right and packing all sort of sermons in this 2 minutes banger. The haunting background chants and drums make me feel like I am in the midst of one African tribe during a new year festival. This bangs.

14. 'Madu' – Another record where love, money and bedroom matters come to the fore. ''I want to use my money to scatter your brain for you, permit me'', oh well.

15. 'Poko' – Sounds like it should have been merged with the previous song or better still left out entirely.

16. 'Ikwe' ft Diplo – The best feeling this song evokes is nostalgia of Shaggy's hit record 'Wasn't Me', doesn't really do much to match upto major songs on the tape.

17. 'Nesesari' ft Philkeyz – At this point, you can sense the energy on the tape dropping major levels, with multiple listens, this will still be just decent.

18. 'Over' – A good song but adds nothing extra to the album.

19. 'Kojo' ft Sarkodie – Another really loveable track and Sarkodie comes through with a good verse.

20. 'Tobi' – Last song, the uptempo beat kicks, his reggae influence is back. This is a song absolutely born out of some form of personal experience, there is a bit of love talk and words of wisdom merged in here. The chorus calls for prayers and provides a nice way to end the album with a bang.

My Thoughts: Kizz Daniel is a special talent. One who possesses an understanding of his craft to adequately develop into a truly great artist, especially now that he is unhinged by any label restrictions.

Even though he could have done better with the title of his album, ''No Bad Songz'', it also serves as a nod to his self confidence.

The album unfolds in several layers, with feel-good anthems being its major drive. But, it is not singular in theme, there is enough music for you when you are down, when you are in search of a girlfriend or when you get to the club.

His views on life have been further honed by his experiences in the last couple of years and you can sense this on songs like 'Ghetto' and 'Ja'.

Kizz Daniel's vocal presence on the tape well matched by his artistic maturity and the specificity in his lyrics makes for colourful moments of abstract imagery. He is also quite skilled in applying the neccessary elements of life and love to score hit precords far better than a lot of his contemporaries and production on the tape is also pretty solid all round.

However, 'No Bad Songz' is lengthy. Too lengthy actually. 20 tracks long and these days, too much usually leads to excess weight, and it shows in at least five songs that serves best as fillers.

I won't consider the album a classic or the best that the gifted singer can offer, but this is an impressive follow-up to 'New Era' that allows for his pop-star influences to shine bright.

Katsina LG Workers Warned Against Lobbying For Promotion/Posting

Segun Olaniyan

Katsina – Alhaji Maigari Danjuma Dalihu, chairman, Katsina State Local Government Service Commission, has warned local government workers in the state against indulging in shady acts to get promoted or favourable posting.

Dalihu gave the warning on Thursday while speaking at an occasion organized by the state branch of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the union.

According to him, if NULGE branch officials were doing the right thing, there would be no reason for any member to come to Katsina looking for his favours, saying “posting and promotion is a normal routine and any worker due for it will be given.

The commission boss, who lamented that, on his assumption into office, met a situation where a local government staff retired and for 13 years his file would not reach the commission, said when he enquired, he found out that the file was recovered under a refrigerator.

While commending the union members for the harmonious working relations, he urged them to be upright in the fight and demand for the rights of workers.

Comrade Ibrahim Khaleel, the national president of NULGE, represented by the Katsina branch president, Comrade Aliyu Haruna Kankara, lamented the suffocation of local governments by some state governors.

Khaleel also demanded full autonomy of local governments as well as the inclusion of recongnition of local governments in the constitution as the third tier of government.

Comrade Tanimu Saulawa, the state NLC chairman, and Comrade Hussaini Hamisu, the state chairman, Medical and Health Workers Union, in their separate remarks, commended the discipline and commitment of NULGE leadership in the state.

Trump cancels Putin meeting over Ukraine crisis

TrumpUnited States President Donald Trump on Thursday abruptly canceled a planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Argentina, registering his disapproval of Russia’s treatment of Ukraine and casting new uncertainty over US-Russian ties.

“Based on the fact that the ships and sailors have not been returned to Ukraine from Russia, I have decided it would be best for all parties concerned to cancel my previously scheduled meeting in Argentina with President Vladimir Putin. I look forward to a meaningful Summit again as soon as this situation is resolved!  Trump tweeted.

Trump’s tweet from aboard Air Force One shortly after takeoff from Washington on the way to Buenos Aires for a Group of 20 summit, was a sudden turnaround.

Roughly an hour earlier, he had told reporters he would probably meet with Putin at the summit and said it was “a very good time to have the meeting.

Trump had also said he would get a final report during the flight to Argentina on the tension in the region after Russia seized Ukrainian vessels near Crimea on Sunday Reuters reported.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Thursday accused Putin of wanting to annex his entire country and called for NATO to deploy warships to a sea shared by the two nations.

While it was unclear why there was a sudden change in plans for a meeting, holding talks with Putin now could represent bad optics for the White House at a time when the president is under scrutiny over prior plans to build a Trump Tower in Moscow.

Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen pleaded guilty on Thursday to lying to Congress about the proposed Trump Organization skyscraper in Moscow, prompting Trump to lash out at Cohen as a “liar and “weak person.

Strike: ASUU Seeks Cooperation Of Parents, Students

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called on parents and students to show understanding in repositioning and saving the country’s university system from total collapse.

Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, ASUU National President, made the appeal in an interview with newsmen in Lagos on Thursday.

Among the demands of the university teachers are full implementations of the Memorandum of Action (MoA) agreement with the Federal Government in 2017; improved working conditions and welfare package; and upgrade of facilities in universities across the country.

According to Ogunyemi, the strike is not to short-change neither the students nor the parents and other key stakeholders but to save the country’s university system from collapse.

“We want to call on our students and parents to show understanding with our struggle as we are in this together.

“The whole essence of this struggle is to ensure that our students get worthy and deserving certificates that they will be proud of anywhere they may find themselves in the world.

“The struggle is to ensure too that we save Nigerian universities from going the way our public primary and secondary schools have gone.

“Today, most parents are sending their children and wards to private primary and secondary schools around the country because of the perceived or alleged fallen standards.

“We do not want our universities to go the same way because a lot of our parents may not be able to afford the private university fees, he said.

The ASUU boss added that there was an urgent need for both the Federal and State Governments to reconsider their approach toward the development of universities in the country, to avoid an outright collapse in the near future.

“The sad thing now is that the World Bank is giving funds to some private universities to thrive over public universities.

“Unless Nigerians rise to the occasion and join ASUU in putting pressure on both the Federal and State Governments to pay adequate attention to our universities, secondary and primary schools, we may be facing a total collapse of our educational sector, Ogunyemi said.

He noted that university students might be staying longer at home as no concrete resolution had been reached with the Federal Government so far.

Ogunyemi said that representatives of the union met with the Federal Government on Monday, November 26 but that the meeting ended in a deadlock.

“Rather than come out with a firm commitment on what to do about these demands, they were appealing to us to go back to the classrooms while they tackle the issues; and to us they have missed the point.

“We were told that the negotiation will continue on Friday, November 30 but up till now, as we speak, I have not received any notice of meeting to that effect,’’ he said.

Lifestyle: These 3D illusions made from just pencil and paper will confuse your senses

Optical illusion Howard Lee

Howard Lee went viral for his hyperrealistic drawings of everyday objects. He's back with much simpler illusions, using only a pencil and paper.

  • Howard Lee is a popular artist known for his hyperrealistic depictions of everyday objects.
  • Now he is creating simpler illusions using just pencil and paper.
  • Although simple, there is a mystery to how he pulls off each illusion.

After seriously confusing the internet with his hyperrealistic drawings of everyday objects, artist Howard Lee is back with much simpler — but equally mind-bending — illusions.

The British artist has taken a more minimalist approach to his latest works, using just a pencil and paper to make two-dimensional illusions come to life. These brainteasers seem to leap off the page, proving once again that you can't always believe what you see.

INSIDER spoke to Lee about his latest project to learn a bit more about how it works.

He said the purpose of these new illusions is to "provoke questioning and discussion." And that's just what he did when he turned a piece of paper into a descending staircase. Take a look.

In the video, Lee purposefully shows how he made the paper into a staircase but does not explain how the ball disappears into the paper.

"Some people are sure they know exactly how it's done and they just enjoy it, some people can't really decide what's going on," he said. "Just as a magician I'd like to leave it for people to make their own minds up."

He doesn't explain how the ball disappears into this paper's black hole, either.

He does explain, though, that his illusions are a combination of two principles.

"Some artists draw anamorphic perspective tricks and others conjure up a sort of video magic," he said. "I guess I just decided to combine the two."

The floating ball illusion is a great example of how he uses perspective to trick audiences.

While it may be confusing for the internet, Lee said the illusions actually quite simple to make — especially compared to his "which is real" drawings.

"The beauty of these is that the drawing is so simple," he said. "Sometimes that element only takes 15 minutes or so. However, developing the concept, filming, and putting it all together does take longer."

The concept for the hand illusion, for example, took a great deal of time to conceptualize.

Although he's fairly new to this type of artistry, it doesn't stop him from defying dimensions — like this matchbox car drawing.

"I'd been looking to vary my online content for some time, and this seemed to make sense published alongside the work that my audience has come to expect," he told INSIDER.

While he is doing what is expected of him, each new piece still has an element of surprise for the audience.

"You shouldn't trust your eyes, nor can you really believe what you see online," Lee said. "Very little is really as it seems."

NDDC Urges FG To Remit Outstanding Funds

NDDC, Mr. Victor Ndoma-Egba, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC)

Mr Nsima Ekere, Managing Director, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), has appealed to the House of Representatives to assist NDDC recover outstanding funds owed the commission by the Federal Government.

Ekere, made the call in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Thursday by the commission’s Director of Corporate Communications, Dr Ibitoye Abosede.

He told members of House Committee on NDDC, who visited the commission in Port Harcourt, that Federal Government owed the commission `hundreds of billions of naira.’

He said: “If Federal Government remits the outstanding funds; it will help the commission to continue to work for the peace and progress of the Niger Delta.

“I recall that committee members had invited the Accountant-General of the Federation and some officials of the Ministry of Finance over the outstanding payment from Federation Account.

“Also, President Muhammadu Buhari directed the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Budget and National Planning to work with NDDC in reconciling all statutory obligations and agree on immediate payment plan.

“However, the issue is still pending and the reconciliation which President Buhari ordered is yet to be concluded, he said.

Ekere said NDDC needed the funds to sustain current peace achieved in the Niger Delta through projects being undertaken by the Buhari-led Federal Government and the NDDC.

He said that current peace in the region had helped oil and gas industries to produce optimally, resulting to more capital inflow into the Federation Account.

The managing director commended the National Assembly on its amendment of the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (fiscal incentives, guaranteed and assurance) Act of 2004.

“This amendment stripped the NLNG of its immunity from financial contributions to the NDDC. This has helped NDDC to realise funds to pay contractors for the projects they are handling.

“Also, we have been able to recover lots of revenue from the oil and gas companies. These companies that had hitherto failed to fulfill their financial obligations are now cooperating, he said.

Earlier, Chairman of the House Committee on NDDC, Nicholas Mutu, said that committee members were on oversight function to the commission.

“We are basically interested in examining the books and keeping tract with development efforts by inspecting ongoing projects, he said.
