American Author, Nora Roberts Addresses Tomi Adeyemi’s Plagiarism Accusation, Releases Statement

Famed American bestselling author, Nora Roberts, smarting from the unfounded allegation of plagiarism made by Nigerian-American writer Tomi Adeyemi has reacted by penning an open latter.

Adeyemi, a 25-year-old Harvard graduate had used Twitter to accuse Roberts, 68, of stealing the book titled “Of Blood and Bone from her own fantasy novel “Children of Blood and Bone and “shamelessly profiting off it.

Adeyemi soon received numerous basing as went on to tweet an apology, explaining that Roberts reached out to her to clarify. However, she did not take down the tweet where she accused Roberts, leaving fans to continue to criticise the writer.

Roberts, writing a long post on her blog, addressed the issue in a post titled “Mob Rule on Social Media. revealing that her team reached out to Adeyemi’s asking that the tweet be taken down, but no response has been gotten.

Read the post below:

MOB RULE BY SOCIAL MEDIA

I’m not on Twitter. I’ve said before and will say again, I’d rather be poked in the eye with a burning stick than tweet. I’m only on Instagram and Facebook because the amazing Laura runs the show.

I write. I spend my days working, my evenings either working or with my family. Or zoned in front of the TV, basically brain dead.

I don’t spend much time on social media. I recognize its power, I appreciate its ability to connect writers with readers. And I also understand how easily it can be weaponized to incite flame wars. So I’m very careful with my use of it–and Laura is even more so.

I write. It’s what I do. What I love and what I’ve spent three decades learning how to do well. Or as well as I possibly can.

But there are a lot of authors who spend a great deal of time on social media. Some are absolute geniuses with the tools and use them beautifully.

Others. Not so much.

I don’t believe and have never believed in taking personal issues onto public forums. I don’t believe, and have never believed–will never believe–in a writer attacking another writing on a public forum. It’s unprofessional, it’s tacky and the results are, always, just always, ugly.

Recently another writer used her social media forums to baselessly, recklessly accuse me of stealing the title of her book–which is bullshit right off–to attempt to profit from this theft. She had no facts, just her emotions, and threw this out there for her followers.

First, let’s address the particular title which happens to be similar. I titled this particular book, wrote this book, turned this book into my publisher nearly a year before her book–a first novel–was published. So unless I conquered the time/space continuum, my book was actually titled before hers. Regardless, you can’t copyright a title. And titles, like broad ideas, just float around in the creative clouds. It’s what’s inside that counts.

It’s just a title.

By accusing me, in public, of attempting to ‘shamelessly profit’ off of her creativity, she incited her readers into attacking me–on her feed, then on my pages, then on the internet in general. She did nothing to stop this. I have been accused of theft, of trying to use this first time writer–whose book has been well received–for my own profit. To ride her coattails as I have no originality. This after more than thirty years in the business, more than two hundred books.

I was accused of plagiarism–for a title–of stealing her ideas–though I had never heard of her book before this firestorm, have never read her book.

And trust me, I never will now.

This is what happens when a reckless statement is made on social media. It becomes a monstrous lie that spreads and grows and escalates.

I don’t know this woman; she doesn’t know me. She lit the match, foolishly. Perhaps being young and new and so recently successful she doesn’t fully understand the relationship between a writer and her readers, or the power of an ugly insinuation posted on Twitter. But, God, you should know how tools work before you use them.

We should all take a lesson here. Think, then think again, before you post. Be sure of your facts before you take a shot at someone. Be prepared for the vicious fallout once you do.

Could you have dug a little deeper to check facts? Could you have contacted the person in question and had a conversation? In this case–writer to writer–could you have spoken to your publisher, your agent, about the fact that a title can’t be stolen in the first place?

Could you have, perhaps, checked the timeline? If your book came out a few months before the other book (and if you know SQUAT about publishing) you’d certainly realize it was written, titled and in production when yours hit the stands. So how could a damn title be ‘stolen’?

To be accused of plagiarism by some faceless reader on the internet, one who felt entitled to spread that lie gutted me. I’ve been plagiarized, and will always have an open wound from the blow. To me, plagiarism is the most terrible sin a writer can commit.

I have worked my entire career to build a foundation of professionalism, of teamwork with my publisher, to create a community with other writers, and to show readers I value them–not just with communication, but by doing my best to give them good books.

No one who knows me would believe any of these accusations. But that’s the problem. Those making them don’t know me, they simply lash out because they can.

This foolish and false statement has damaged my reputation. Vicious and ugly accusations and names have been tossed at me when I did nothing but write and title a book.

While this writer issued a kind of retraction after I reached out to her, it didn’t stop some of her readers from calling me a liar, and worse. We reached out again, asking her to put out the fire.

We’ve had no response, not from her, not from her agent.

Shame on them.

I had every intention of letting this go, until the flames kept burning, until the attacks kept coming. And nothing was done by the person who lit the match to stop it.

I don’t like taking my issues public. But I will stand up for myself. I will defend my integrity and my reputation and my work.

I’m appalled by this, sickened by it. I’m disgusted that people who don’t know me would feel free to say vicious things about me. I know very well the anonymity of the internet can foster such nastiness, but it still disgusts me.

Words have great power–to harm, to heal, to teach, to entertain. A writer, one who wants to forge a career with words, should understand that. And use them, as well as the tools at her disposal, wisely.

I’ve very deliberately not mentioned the name of the writer who started this, or the title of her book or mine. I don’t want this to escalate any more than it has. I don’t want my readers to go on the attack. It’s not cool. I simply want to set the record straight.

I’m Nora Roberts. I’m a hard-working writer, and an honest one.

That’s it.

Three Dons Emerge Co-Winners Of 2018 NAS Prize For Life Sciences

EJIKEME OMENAZU and OYENIRAN APATA

LAGOS – Three distinguished Nigerian scientists have emerged co-winners of the 2018 Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS) gold medal prize for life sciences.

This followed their outstanding research works in the area of molecular genetics and biotechnology addressed to solving significant health problems affecting mankind.

Professor Gabriel Ogunmola, a Fellow of Academy of Science (FAS) and Chairman, 2018 NAS Science Prize Committee, announced this during a press briefing in Lagos on Thursday.

He named the awardees as Professor Wasiu Lamre Adeyemo from University of Lagos, Dr. Emmanuel Oluwadare Balogun from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, and Professor Temidayo Ogundiran from University of Ibadan.

Prof. Ogunmola said the co-winners were selected for their significant scientific achievements in using the cutting edge and expertise of molecular genetics to understand the basis of cleft lip and palate (CLP) in Sub-Saharan Africa.

This, he stressed, involved an “ingenious application of a template for developing transgenic tse-tse flies to achieve biological control of trypanosomiasis and advanced an original contribution to the understanding genetic disparity in cancer between people of African descent and other races.

While highlighting the in-depth scientific researches and discoveries made by the scientists, Prof. Ogunmola decried the insignificant financial contributions of the Federal Government to support research works in Nigerian institutions of higher learning.

He, therefore, called on the Federal Government to revive the Science Innovation Fund (SIF) initiated during former President Olusegun Obasanjo administration to boost government support for scientific researches and retooling of science laboratories, adding that this would also address the problem of brain drain from the country.

Ogunmola explained that Professor Adeyemo’s research had been in the area of molecular genetics of the environmental aetiology of cleft lip and palate (CLP) and craniofacial defects, which he said had promoted collaborative activities between University of Lagos, University of Iowa, University of Pittsburgh, University of Dundee, and other African Universities.

He added that Professor Adeyemo and his research group had taken several giant steps towards understanding the genetic causes on non-syndromic clefts in Nigeria and African populations.

The group, he added, had been able to genotype 4,000 samples from Sub-Sahara Africa using a global power chip with 2.2 SNPs for the first genome-wide association studies GWAS on orofacial cleft in Africa (Nigeria, Ghana and Ethiopia) for orofacial cleft.

According to Ogunmola, another co-awardee, Dr. Balogun’s expertise cut across the life sciences and focused on molecular parasitology, Structural, Biology, and Genomics, applying them for drug discovery studies against African endemic tropical diseases.

He stressed that his research group found that the midgat of mosquitoes contains a 45 k Da glycoprotein that is capable of killing trypanosomes.

Nigeria planning to sell electricity to Burkina Faso

Electricity supply in Nigeria

A power firm company has decided it's left with no choice than to find reliable buyers for the rejected power generated in Nigeria.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited, Lamu Audu, has revealed that Nigeria is planning to sell electricity to a neighbouring country, Burkina Faso.

While speaking at the Annual Power and Utilities Roundtable organised by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in Lagos on Thursday, Lamu revealed that out of the two 922 megawatts generated on his company's network, only 600 to 650MW are taken by distribution companies in Nigeria.

The MD of the company that operates Kainji and Jebba Hydropower plants said the company is left with no choice than to find reliable buyers for the rejected power generated.

"We are left with no option than to sell the balance to other African countries that are willing to pay. In fact, they are willing to take up the whole electricity invoice at a higher price than what Nigerians are willing to pay. We are talking to Burkina Faso on this," he said.

He noted that his company is not the first to take such an action as Nigerian power firms have been known to sell electricity to Togo, Benin Republic, and other African countries.

Edo To Start Refurbishment Of Public Schools

Godwin Obaseki

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has disclosed his administration’s resolve to commence refurbishment of public schools in the state, urging for support and cooperation of the School-Based Management Committees.

Obaseki disclosed this during a training for School-Based Management Committee of Emotan Primary School in Benin City, Edo State, on Thursday.

Obaseki said that the state government would work in agreement with the committee, communities and other relevant stakeholders on the refurbishment of schools, noting, “President Muhammadu Buhari, through the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), has provided enough fund to embark on this purpose. Massive revamp will commence in the state soon.

The governor said the School-Based Management Committees would include members of the communities, parents and stakeholders in the governance and administration of schools across the state, as they will act as catalysts for progress.

He added that his administration had decided to revamp the state’s basic education system, noting, “If I achieved nothing as governor of Edo State, I want it to be on record that I came and turned around the basic education system in Edo State for good.

He continued, “The Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (Edo-BEST) programme was introduced to enable us go back to the foundation which must be solid as this will enable our children to face the challenges ahead.

“What is taught in the first six to nine years of education will certainly affect the child, as it will become difficult to cope with the challenges of life if they get it wrong at that level.

The governor maintained that for such a system to work, the schools must be run properly, and the head teachers should be able to monitor the teachers daily using Information Communication Technology (ICT) gadgets.

“We can’t play politics with education and the lives of our children. The whole idea of creating multiple schools to have multiple head teachers is not right. We can’t have three schools in one premise; it will not work. For those schools that need to be merged, we will merge them and continue to train our teachers and improve their welfare.
