Nigeria Customs seizes N3.06bn worth of tramadol, other drugs at Onne port

A container of Tramadol and other pharmaceutical products seized by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in Lagos

Mr Augustine Chidi, the Deputy Comptroller General of Customs in-charge of Enforcement, Investigation and Inspection, announced the seizure in Port Harcourt.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has seized nine 40ft containers of tramadol and other controlled drugs with duty paid value of N3.06 billion at Onne Port, Rivers.

Mr Augustine Chidi, the Deputy Comptroller General of Customs in-charge of Enforcement, Investigation and Inspection, announced the seizure in Port Harcourt.

Chidi said the containers were falsely declared as containing PVC ball valves and general goods.

“You will recall that last week, Nigerian Customs Service announced the seizure of 50 containers in Lagos.

“This brings to a total of 59 containers of controlled drugs so far seized within this month,’’ Chidi said.

He said that the importation contravened “Section 46 of Customs and Excise Management Act Cap 45 LFN’’.

Chidi said that the Comptroller General of Customs, retired Col. Hameed Ali, ordered a thorough investigation to bring perpetrators to justice.

“Let me assure you that the NCS will not relent on its role of contributing to national economic and security well-being of Nigerians by ensuring that items that can negatively affect the citizenry are not allowed into the country,’’ he said.

According to him, NCS is increasingly relying on intelligence and technology to make it difficult for smugglers to have their way.

He called on the public, especially border community dwellers and port users to desist from importing illicit goods.

Chidi also called for public support for better performance by NCS and expressed concern that Nigeria was experiencing increasing attempts by unpatriotic elements to smuggle dangerous drugs into the country.

He said the increasing smuggling of controlled drugs into the country could be traced to the Christmas and New Year season as well as the coming elections in 2019.

According to him unscrupulous business men were exploiting the market provided by the seasons and elections in which some politicians might want to engage the youth in unwholesome activities.

“These elements are morally bankrupt and willing to make money at the expense of human lives. We must stop them as we all have a duty to protect our nation,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, the Controller, Area II Command of NCS, Comptroller Aliyu Saidu, said the command would perform better when it received one of the three scanners approved by the Federal Executive Council for the customs.

“It will greatly assist our command in checking crime and increase our revenue base,’’ Saidu said.

EU, ECOWAS Partner On Security, Economy, Election In Nigeria, W/Africa

Buhari, ECOWAS

The EU and ECOWAS have agreed to pursue and maintain common political engagement in supporting free, fair, credible and peaceful election in Nigeria and other West African countries.

Mr Hubert Fuchs, the Chair of the Council of the European Union Representative said this on Friday in Abuja at a joint news conference on EU and ECOWAS political dialogue meeting.

“We have agreed that on the regional security, there is need for even greater coordination in the Sahel and to strengthen our common work in the Gulf of Guinea.

“On trade and economy, we agreed on the need to take our partnership even further, since we understand the need for more investment in West Africa, he said.

He noted that the President of EU Commission Jean-Claude Juncker launched in September the “Africa-Europe Alliance for Sustainable investment and jobs.

According to him, the West Africa region is particularly fit to benefit from this alliance as it has resources including people and talent, dynamism and drive.

“This alliance also lends support to the effective implementation of the Economic Partnership Agreements between the EU and regional grouping in Africa, including ECOWAS.

“Together they will help lay a firm basis for the African Continental Free Trade Area.

“The alliance, the EPA and ACFTA will provide opportunities to expand trade, encourage investment, diversify economies, promote industrialisations, and create jobs.

“We have exchanged ideas as well on challenges and opportunities over population growth, job creation, migration and mobility. These phenomena need to be jointly managed, in mutual interest and in a balanced way, he said.

Speaking on the issue of irregular migration the envoy said that there was the need for the two regions to find a common and constructive solution to it.

“The EU is not fortress, but it cannot be borderless either. So on irregular migration in particular, I wish to stress that this matter is of such high political importance in Europe.

“And, that we look to our partners in West Africa to find common and constructive and mutually beneficial ways forward.

“We aim to do this through solidarity, partnership and shared responsibility, he said

He said the two regions had fruitful and constructive discussion around cooperation covering all areas include political, economic, trade, development, humanitarian and security.

“It shows the depth of our cooperation and highlights how the interest of Europe and West Africa closely linked. We have reviewed our work together and outlined key actions for the future, he said.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Mustapha Sulaiman, earlier said the meeting had discussed various areas of cooperation between the EU and the ECOWAS.

“It has been a fruitful discussion ranging from security to economic cooperation that will enhance both regions; essentially areas of concern have been raised and assurances and commitment have also been given in all those areas.

“We have discussed elections and political situation in some of ECOWAS countries.

“We have also isolated some challenges and proffered some solutions that both EU and CEOWAS would pursue toward the resolution of political crisis in some of these countries, he said.

Sulaiman said that the discussion had been on economic cooperation as they related to migration, job creation and economic programme and “these are all well taken in the various level of discussions.

“EU and ECOWAS will also pursue all these elements that we have established in all these discussions.

“We are quite happy with the discussion and the support and the commitment the EU had given in this strategic regional partnership and all other areas that we need to tidy up and make recommendation to the authority, he said.

APGA Chairman demands apology from Bianca Ojukwu over verbal attacks

Bianca Ojukwu

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Dr. Victor Ike Oye has expressed dismay at over unwarranted verbal attacks on him by Mrs. Bianca Ojukwu.

Addressing Newsmen in Awka on Friday on the issue, Oye said that he deserved an apology for the misplaced and unwarranted attacks on him by the wife of the late Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu.

The chairman said that Ojukwu’s widow had not been fair to him or the party in spite of all the support and privileges she enjoyed.Oye also said that Ojukwu should apologise to him and the party for the allegations against them.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Bianca on Nov 26 advised the national leadership of APGA, to immediately refund all monies collected from political office aspirants for the party’s alleged botched primaries and honourably resign thereafter.

Ojukwu, who spoke in Owerri at the 7th memorial anniversary of her husband, Ikemba Emeka Ojukwu, accused APGA leadership of fleecing aspirants.

She also said that for APGA to survive as a party, Oye must resign.

Oye explained that though Bianca joined the Anambra South Senatorial contest for APGA ticket a bit late, she got a lot of assistance from the party to enable her to clinch the nomination, and wondered why she lost.

The APGA chairman said he did not offend Bianca in any way and expressed surprise at her invectives on him and the party.

He said rather than castigate the national chairman and the party, Bianca should have been explaining her loss after receiving so much logistics to enable her to win.

Oye said that Bianca’s media swipe on APGA did not befit her status as the mother of the party, but smacked more of anti party activity.

“Bianca is my personal friend and there is no way I could have done any wrong against her.

“I must tell you that I was surprised when she started attacking me in the media. I think that was a very serious mistake on her part, because she is fighting the wrong person.

“I did not do any wrong against Bianca. People were sent to conduct the primary election and they returned the result to me and that was all I cared for.

“APGA gave her support, I would not want to announce it openly, but we gave her all the support she needed to win but she did not win.

“She calls herself Mother General of APGA, but as a mother she should not be castigating the party like that.

“Her action is anti party, but we don’t want to go into all that, because I know that very soon she will know the truth as truth is immutable, he said.

Oye said the report available to the party showed that primary election for Anambra South Senatorial District ticket which Bianca participated in held and ended well with a clear winner announced to the public.

The chairman, who recalled the party’s insistence on fair and open primary elections, said Bianca could have been awarded the ticket if she had indicated interest much earlier.

Oye said it was wrong for Bianca to blackmail him or APGA, because of her marital status, adding that such emotions and sentiments were not accommodated by the constitution of the party or any other in the country.

“The report I got is that it went well and that a winner emerged. The report said she was there, she participated and the votes were counted and result declared, including her own and the man won.

“They said we gave Senator Victor Umeh ticket unopposed yes, because he indicated interest early enough and he deserved it too. If Bianca had shown interest much earlier, I would have announced that she should not be opposed.

“But she joined the fray after Nicholas Ukachukwu and Ifeanyi Ubah had declared and was already running.

“That she is a widow does not confer on her a special status. It is not in APGA constitution that once you are a widow we give you ticket.

“I don’t think it is in the constitution of any party in Nigeria that once you are a widow you get automatic ticket.

“Remember we said that it was going to be contested openly, and it was contested. I hold her in high esteem; I respect her as the wife of Ojukwu.

“But she has been castigating me in the media, she owes me an apology, a serious apology, because I have done nothing against her, he added.
