Trump, Obama, Clinton Mourn Ex-President Bush

ObamaSpeePost-1

U.S. President Donald Trump and wife, Melania have mourned the death of former president George H.W. Bush, who died on Friday night at the age of 94.

Former President Barack Obama and wife, Michelle, as well as former president Bill Clinton and wife Hillary, also mourned the 41st president of the U.S.

Trump and Melania, in a joint statement, praised Bush for his “sound judgment, common sense and unflappable leadership’’, adding he inspired generations of his fellow Americans to public service.

The Trumps said: “With sound judgement, common sense and unflappable leadership, President Bush guided our nation and the world to a peaceful and victorious conclusion of the Cold War.

“As president, he set the stage for the decades of prosperity that have followed.

“And through all that he accomplished, he remained humble, following the quiet call to service that gave him a clear sense of direction’’.

The Obamas, in a statement, said Bush’s life was “a testament to the notion that public service is a noble, joyous calling.

“And he did tremendous good along the journey’’.

They also credited the former president, who was the U.S. 41st president and served from 1989 to 1993, with “expanding America’s promise to new immigrants and people with disabilities’’.

“Reducing the scourge of nuclear weapons and building a broad international coalition to expel a dictator from Kuwait.

“And when democratic revolutions bloomed across Eastern Europe, it was his steady, diplomatic hand that made possible an achievement once thought anything but – ending the Cold War without firing a shot.

“It’s a legacy of service that may never be matched, even though he’d want all of us to try,’’ the Obamas said.

The Clintons, in a statement issued on Saturday, said Bush’s extensive record of public service was rare, with his years in the military, in Congress, the United Nations, China, the Central Intelligence Agency, and as vice president and president.

The statement read: “Hillary and I mourn the passing of President George H. W. Bush and give thanks for his great long life of service, love and friendship.

“I am grateful for every minute I spent with him and will always hold our friendship as one of my life’s greatest gifts’’.

Clinton, who defeated Bush in the 1992 presidential election, said he was always struck by Bush’s “innate and genuine decency’’ and by his devotion to his wife Barbara and his family.

Clinton added that Bush never stopped serving even after leaving office, working on tsunami relief in Asia and within the U.S. after Hurricane Katrina.

His son, George W. Bush also became the 43rd president eight years later, becoming the only other U.S. president, who had a son who also became president, after John Adams.

Bush’s wife and former first lady Barbara, died at the age of 92 on April 17, and he was survived by his five children, including former president George W. Bush and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

Protest clashes erupt in Paris as anti-Macron rallies return

Riot police officers spray tear gas against demonstrators during a protest of Yellow vests (Gilets jaunes) against rising oil prices and living costs, on the Champs Elysees avenue in Paris on December 1, 2018. Thousands of anti-government protesters are expected today on the Champs-Elysees in Paris, a week after a violent demonstration on the famed avenue was marked by burning barricades and rampant vandalism that President Emmanuel Macron compared to "war scenes". Lucas BARIOULET / AFP

Police fired tear gas to disperse protesters trying to tear down barricades on the Champs-Elysees in Paris early Saturday as hundreds converged on the city for new demonstrations, with anger over fuel taxes morphing into a wide-ranging anti-government movement.

Clashes between police and demonstrators wearing the high-visibility yellow vests, which have become the symbol of the protest against President Emmanuel Macron, broke out soon after crowds began gathering near the Arc de Triomphe, at the top of the famous avenue.

The Champs Elysees itself was on lockdown, its glittering Christmas decorations standing in stark contrast to boarded-up storefronts and throngs of riot police manning barricades and water cannon. Dozens of arrests were made in the first few hours of the protest.

Some officers, wearing protective gear and helmets, were spattered with vivid yellow paint.

Banks, wine shops and cafes on surrounding streets were also racing to cover up windows on Saturday, as the acrid odor of tear gas and burning trash containers filled the air.

Several protesters wore face masks, while others carried gas masks or ski goggles.

Other protests were expected around France by people angry over a surge in fuel prices this year which they attribute to a series of tax increases to finance the government’s anti-pollution efforts.

“With all these tax hikes, there’s not much left for eating at the end of the month,” Philippe, a high school cook in the Essonne region outside Paris, said near the Champs Elysees on Saturday.

The protests come a week after violent clashes on the avenue last Saturday, marked by burning barricades and vandalism which Macron compared to “war scenes”.

Some 5,000 officers have been mobilised and were carrying out ID checks and searches for people hoping to reach the Champs Elysees.

“Our responsibility is to ensure that everything goes as well as possible,” Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said while touring the forces on the avenue.

Castaner had already said on Thursday that “far left and far right activists” were preparing for fresh clashes with the police.

‘We want our dignity’
The “yellow vest” movement erupted on social media in October and has since become a wider protest against Macron, who is accused of failing to recognise the rising costs of living that has left many struggling.

The first day of protests, on November 17, attracted around 282,000 people, while some 106,000 turned out last Saturday, including 8,000 in the capital.

The protests include many pensioners and has been most active in small urban and rural areas where it has blocked roads, closed motorway toll booths, and even walled up the entrance to tax offices.

Two people have died and hundreds have been injured in the protests which opinion polls suggest still attract the support of two out of three French people.

Attempts by the government to negotiate with the movement have failed, in large part because representatives have insisted on public talks broadcast on TV.

“We want our dignity back and we want to be able to live from our work, which is absolutely not the case today,” Jason Herbert said after walking out of talks with Prime Minister Edouard Philippe on Friday.

Macron has sought to douse the anger by promising three months of nationwide talks on how best to transform France into a low-carbon economy without penalising the poor.

He also vowed to slow the rate of increase in fuel taxes if international oil prices rise too rapidly but only after a tax hike due in January.

But many protesters were unconvinced by Macron’s speech on Tuesday.

“What we need is something tangible, not just smoke and mirrors,” said Yoann Allard, a 30-year-old farmhand.

‘Resign!’
Trade union leaders, who met Friday with Philippe, have called for a moratorium on January’s tax hike, a suggestion which some pro-Macron members of parliament have started to endorse.

The anger has reached French overseas territories, especially on the Indian Ocean island of Reunion.

The minister for overseas territories, Annick Girardin, who was dispatched to the island to talk to protesters, was forced to cut short a meeting Friday with demonstrators after they booed her and shouted “Macron, resign!”

The movement has spilled across to neighbouring Belgium, where riot police used water cannon Friday to disperse stone-throwing “yellow vest” protesters who burned two police vehicles in the centre of Brussels.

Villa to rejoin Iniesta at Vissel Kobe in Japan

Former Spain and Barcelona striker David Villa announced Saturday that he has signed with J-League’s Vissel Kobe, joining his former teammate Andres Iniesta.

Villa tweeted a video, showing his successful work with New York City FC, before receiving a phone call that took him to Japan.

“Hola japon. Hola Vissel Kobe,” he said in the clip, which showed him in the J-League club’s crimson jersey.

The 36-year-old forward is the latest high-profile acquisition by Vissel in the western Japanese port city of Kobe.

The outfit — owned by Japanese tech billionaire Hiroshi Mikitani — acquired Iniesta earlier this year after signing former Arsenal striker Lukas Podolski in 2017.

Villa, the all-time leading goalscorer in Spanish national team history, joined New York City in 2014 from Atletico Madrid following successful seasons with Barcelona and Valencia.

I can’t take responsibility for the Chibok girls kidnap – Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said he cannot be held responsible for the abduction of the 276 schoolgirls abducted by the terrorist group, Boko Haram.

He said this in an interview with BBC, saying that Nigerians should have shown concern after the April 14, 2014, abduction and not gone ahead to start organising protests even outside the country – or even politicise the whole issue.

“Immediately the Chibok issue came up, we expected Nigerians to be concerned. ‘How do we get these girls out’? Within a couple of days, we saw people going to the US with Bring Back Our Girls placards. How? Why? And of course, Mrs Obama received one of those placards.

“I cannot take responsibility for the abduction. I don’t control Boko Haram. They are criminals. But as a president, of course, you know it is not the president that goes to the fields. You have security and intelligence officers that do the work.

“Let me admit that yes, maybe they do their best, but their best was not good enough for us to recover the girls.

“That does not mean that I am trying to remove myself from any blame. Yes I may not be blamed for the action, but I could be blamed that my security and intelligence systems were not strong enough to be able to recover the girls,” Jonathan said.

Question Of The Day: Is There A Buhari Double Or Clone?

Several high-profile public figures in Nigeria, including a former government minister, have claimed President Muhammadu Buhari is dead and is being imitated by a man called “Jubril “from Sudan.

CrosscheckNigeria, a collaboration of newsrooms in Nigeria, comprising, among others, the icirnigeria.org and The News Agency of Nigeria,  has investigated this claim and found no evidence to support it.

The earliest mention of the claim of an impostor was in a Twitter post by user @sam_ezeh on September 3rd, 2017.

A video outlining the claim has since been shared more than 5,000 times on Facebook and Twitter.

In it, Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), tells his followers that Buhari had died.

“The man you are looking at on the television is not Buhari… His name is Jubril, he’s from Sudan. After extensive surgery they brought him back, he says. Kanu has separately referred to the supposed lookalike as “Jubril Al-Sudani.

Others have called him “Jibrin.Neither Kanu nor the others making the claim have provided any credible evidence.

The rumour has been fuelled by the real-life death of a Nigerian diplomat in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum in May 2018.

There have been allegations that the diplomat was deliberately killed due to his involvement in the supposed cover-up about Buhari.

Reno Omokri, a former aide to President Goodluck Jonathan and Femi Fani Kayode, a former government special advisor and minister under president Olusegun Obasanjo, have both repeated the claims.

Several videos repeating the claims have been viewed on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube more than 500,000 times.

Ajayi Boroffice, a professor of genetics, has also dismissed the possibility of cloning a 75-year–old man such as Buhari.

According to him, it is “ridiculous for anybody to think Mr.President has been cloned and that the person who is the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is a clone from Sudan.

Army Warns Again: Stop Spreading Fake News On Metele Attack

The Nigeria Army has warned again about the fake news fabricated to demoralise troops, cast aspersion and discredit the military in its operations against the Boko Haram insurgents in the northeast.

Brig. Sani Kukasheka Usman, the Director, Army Public Relations, in a statement  said that such publications aimed to misinform and mislead the people; aid the insurgents cause and scuttle the 2019 election.

Kukasheka disclosed that some elements had continued to publicise inaccurate casualty figures despite the clarifications by the Army Headquarters on casualties recorded at Metele and other military locations in the northeast.

“The Nigerian Army has noted with great concern the deliberate and concerted efforts to mislead the public by some people through misinformation. Thus; create erroneous impression of the Nigerian Army through inaccurate and false publication of casualty figures on the unfortunate attacks on some of its locations in the northeast.

“The latest of this worrisome development was the attack on our troops’ location at Metele, Borno, in which some persons and media outlets continued to circulate various wrong accounts and inaccurate casualty figures of troops without efforts to verify from the military.

“This is coming on the heels of our release on November 28, 2018; which gave accurate details of the attacks and casualty figures in a bid to set the records straight and inform the public true account of things.

“We also promised to continuously carry the public along through accurate and timely information dissemination on operations and other activities of the Nigerian Army.

“However, it was observed that the trend continued unabated, most of these inaccurate, false reports and fake news was aimed at denigrating the leadership of the Nigerian Army.

“Regrettably, the rate at which some mischievous persons ignorantly attack the Armed Forces especially the Nigerian Army is very alarming and unfortunate.

“This is a deliberate attempt to demoralise the Nigerian Army which would have devastating consequences on troops’ will to discharge their constitutional duties especially in the fight against terrorism and insurgency, thus affecting national security.

Kukasheka warned ‘mischief makers’ to keep the Nigerian Army out of politics and mischief, and urged journalists to ensure accurate reportage as well as adhere to professional ethics.

He noted that the feat achieved by the Nigerian Army  in the counter insurgency campaign in  the past three years was ‘glaringly obvious’, adding that recent temporary setbacks experienced in the course of the fight against insurgency should not be the yardstick for condemning its accomplishments.

According to him, the Nigerian Army has identified those perpetrating the fake news on the Metele attack, adding the army would take appropriate legal actions against them.

Kukasheka explained that the measure was necessary to ensure that the Nigerian Army is insulated from propaganda and ulterior motives of destabilising the country, stressing that the perpetrators were covertly supporting terrorists and their activities in Nigeria with a long term objective.

“We are also aware that they want to use insecurity to scuttle and subvert the democratic process in the country.

“Consequently, we would like to state unequivocally that no amount of mischief or pressure would circumvent the journey to a peaceful, free and fair general elections in Nigeria, he added.

The director, therefore, sought for support and understanding of Nigerians to enable the army to deal with the remnants of the Boko Haram terrorists hibernating at the borders with Cameroon, Chad and Niger Republics.

Kukasheka reiterated the commitments of the Nigerian Army to depend the nation’s territorial integrity, remained apolitical and professional in the discharge of its constitutional roles.

What is wrong with us?

“The Parliament is the title of a programme produced by Silver Bird Radio 93.7 Rhythm FM in Jos every Friday morning at 9.00am. it s a hilarious comedy which mimics the Nigerian Senate with David King as the mock Senate president, Brabisco, Osama, Terso, Pam, Maduka and Ajalenkoko as Senators respectively. Today’s episode got me thinking. The discussion was the reduction in cost of JAMB and NECO examination fees, and the increase in salaries of the Police by the Federal government.

The plenary was rowdy and thunderous as Senators argued rashly along political lines. That was a reflection of how Nigerians reacted to the issue in most public forums. Why would the President reduce Jamb and NECO fees and increase Police salaries now that elections are at the corner? Some say it was for political reason; others argued it was a deliberate action to galvanize votes for the President and the All Progressive Congress Party in the coming elections. The opposition Peoples Democratic Party saw it as outright rigging of the elections in advance. Those were argument that greeted the announcement and I asked, what is wrong with us?

ALSO READ: Watch your attitude

Many of us are good at exasperating our President. We are masters at demotivating the ambitious, frustrating the industrious, and demoralizing our leaders. Nigerians, which have long struggled with governance issues, are in urgent need of mental reorientation and transformation to be able to overcome the multiple challenges and explore opportunities that lie ahead on our path to growth and development.

The focus of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government is to bring change that reflect the ideals most Nigerians hold dear; mutual respect and understanding among peoples, economic growth and prosperity that is shared by all; and inclusion, transparency and accountability in management of public affairs. It is in line with these noble ideals that the government effects the reduction in JAMB and NECO fees and also increase salaries of Police.

President Buhari and his mode of governance are targeted at impacting public policies on the welfare of citizens throughout the length and breadth of the country. The School feeding, N-Power, Traders Money programmes are all aimed at enhancing the welfare of indigent Nigerians. The President promised change and he is determine to deliver the desired change and even poised to take it to the next level.

PMB is providing a model of how to be a reformist leader in today’s highly complex world. He is therefore applying policy solutions that maximize beneficial outcomes for the greatest number of Nigerians. In his inaugural address, he said “I belong to nobody, and I belong to everybody. It is a mantra he is prepared to live for without compromise.

Where Nigerians are gathered – two, three or in multiples, we are busy denigrating our country and government. We all seem to know exactly what is wrong with Nigeria. We are all experts at identifying our problems, but are too lazy to proffer sustainable solutions. What is wrong with Nigeria is precisely what is wrong with us as a people.

Now, we are singing a new song. It is titled “Restructuring. They blame the existing constitution as the cause of our constipation. We probably thought that the constitution we operate is the culprit and they, politicians are the victims. That is story for the gods. We are often quick to blame the constitution and forgetting that the status book on its own can only be as effective to the extent at which it is implemented.

First, we blamed the parliamentary model we inherited at independence. We abandoned it and rushed to America and borrowed its presidential model, and in satisfaction, we shouted eureka. We are very good at copy and paste. We planted the seed from America and were deluded in our rash thinking that it will translate to growth. We were damn wrong; the specie refused to germinate or grow out rightly. And if there was any kind of growth at all, it was a crooked growth.

Like Moses Rod in the land of Pharoh, the Whiteman’s presidential system was quickly swallowed by our twisted home grown model which has become the honey pot and cash cow for people in high places and cronies who managed by hook or crook to acquire political power. The vampires at the corridor of power and the few that seated on the throne are being cunningly clever. They manipulated with criminal oratory to remain relevant in any government in power. They are the shoddy politicians who have mastered the art of recycling to extreme perfection.

We ignored the fact that the constitution will not smile if institutions are not strengthened. When we cajoled and manipulated the systems for selfish interests in order to truncate justice, it never bothered us that such criminal act could be cancerous to the constitution. In our self deceit, we forgot that America’s presidential model still works for the Americans. We only adopted the nomenclature but left the “how it works aspect behind. We are being lazy or dubiously illusional.

If we will knock some senses into our heads, we will see the cause of our constipation here has been leadership – bad and selfish leadership without direction, focus and vision. Our leaders at all strata, politicians, armed forces, everybody in and out of office have been selfish – so selfish to the point of scandal and palpitations.

Nigerians do not care much to ask why things or rather the system worked well or relatively well for Nigerians in colonial times, and why is it that they are not working now that we are presumed free. The soul of our country is bleeding and all we do is play politics – dirty politics.

The problem with us is that we politicize every issues and policies in the country. The desired changed may continue to elude us if we continue in our negative line of thoughts against every government policies that is aimed at enhancing our progress as a nation. Yes, leadership may have failed us in time past, but we should begin to cultivate trust on our leaders and do constructive criticism that would constantly remind those in power of the onerous responsibilities bestowed on them.

Most importantly, we should have regards for our constitution and respect for each other as a people. It is imperative that we desist from any form of prejudice and abstain from flying fake news and rumours that is capable of destroying the fabric of our unity. It is better we live together in love and unity than to perish as fools.
