New Year: 7 most important relationship advice you need going into 2019

<p class="">Here is your chance to do better in love than you did in 2018.</p>

<h1>The turn of the year is upon us. We are in the transition period between 2018 and 2019, that point where everyone’s slate is wiped clean and we all get a fresh start.</h1>

<p class="">The opportunity to set the right tone, to do things right and get your act right is once again presented. Whether you are in love already, still waiting for love to find you, whether you are married, still crushing or already in the process of making someone’s son or daughter become the love of your life, here are 10 really important relationship lessons you need most in the year 2019.</p>

<p class=""><strong>1.   Always be yourself</strong></p>

<p class="">Especially to the person you claim to love and hope to spend a part of your life with. It profits nothing in the long run to be fake even to those who should always see you bare. People will hate you regardless of which side you project and some would love you regardless, too.</p>

<p class="">If they can’t love the real you, what’s the point anyway?</p>

<figure class="image" align="center"> <img src="http://bit.ly/2SoYN5b" alt="If it does not make you this happy more often than not, what’s the point? [Credit: Memphis Depay/Instagram]"> <figcaption>If it does not make you this happy more often than not, what’s the point? [Credit: Memphis Depay/Instagram]</figcaption> </figure>

<p class=""><strong>2.    Focus a lot on developing yourself</strong></p>

<p class="">It is easy for people to be attracted and to keep being attracted to people with great lives. It is that simple. Be in love with your SO, but very much with yourself as well. Be the best at your career, generate results, look good, grow in your bandwidth of wisdom and knowledge. It is always a winning strategy to work endlessly on yourself.</p>

<p class=""><strong>3.Cut off exes</strong></p>

<p class="">Delete that number, especially the one belonging to that ex who still has so much power over you. You won’t move on if you do not deliberately cut him or her off.</p>

<p class=""><strong>ALSO READ:</strong><a href="http://bit.ly/2ApoBrc" id="b028e063-2b00-415f-be61-a18ddacad360"> Bad relationship habits to leave behind in 2018</a></p>

<p class=""><strong>4. </strong><a href="http://bit.ly/2Sp1TGx" id="3afd344f-aeb1-403d-8cc2-d1795009ba99">Make the first move</a></p>

<p class="">This is especially for the ladies — is there someone you’ve been eyeballing for some time that you’ve never plucked up the courage to ask out? Ask yourself what you have to lose from a refusal then go out there and ask for what you want!</p>

<figure class="image" align="center"> <img src="http://bit.ly/2ApfTZO" alt="You will be surprised at how easy it is to get that guy you have a crush on [Credit: Shutterstock]"> <figcaption>You will be surprised at how easy it is to get that guy you have a crush on [Credit: Shutterstock]</figcaption> </figure>

<p class=""><strong>5. </strong><a href="http://bit.ly/2Stlx49" id="2f6659f3-fef8-40b8-b7b1-ca25608f5547">Communicate a lot more</a></p>

<p class="">Say what’s on your mind. Let your partner know how you are feeling, what you are feeling and what can be done to help the situation. Also learn how to make your case and good timing. These are other important factors of communication.</p>

<p class=""><strong>6. Be happy</strong></p>

<p class="">If dating isn’t enjoyable, then what exactly is the point? However you decide to approach relationships in 2019, make sure that you’re having fun. If you are in a relationship, make sure you are happy and contented. If these are not in place and all you get is unhappiness, what’s the point?</p>

<p class=""><strong>7. Less phone, more outdoor activities</strong></p>

<p class="">Enough time spent on the phone. Focus instead on getting yourself out there, meeting people and actually interacting with people in real life as much as you do online. Say yes a little more often. Sometimes, the best opportunities do not come as you expected.</p>

2019: Edo NPC Assembly Candidate Decries Marginalisation Of Women In Politics

Benin – The Nigeria People’s Congress (NPC) House of Assembly candidate for Edo State, Vivian Eweka, has decried the marginalization of women in Nigerian politics, noting that women have not been given the opportunity to express themselves.

She expressed her resentment while flagging off her political campaign in Ologbo, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of the state.

Eweka said women had the capacity to govern the country and effect the needed change if given the chance but they had been relegated to the background in the nation’s political sphere, adding that she was in politics to set the pace for other women.

“Women are vibrant but we have not been given the room to really express ourselves. In my government, women will express themselves and they will see the glory of a woman, not just me, I am not going there for myself but for female folks, she said.

The party’s state chairman, Godfrey Ehimhen Ehizokhale, expressed confidence in the candidacy of the party’s flag-bearer, saying she had all that it takes to usher development in the community.

Commending the stance of the NPC candidate, the traditional ruler of the community, Owen Akenzua, represented by Friday Ahanuwa, said before now, he had seen aspirants coming into the community to solicit support into one political office or the other.

He pointed out that it was more pleasing and beneficial to the people of the area to have one of their daughters indicating interest to contest and represent her people at the state House of Assembly.

Akenzua assured the candidate of their support and enjoined inhabitants of the community to rally round her and give her the necessary support to succeed.

Here are the 7 best Nigerian songs to play on New Year’s eve

<h1>2019 is hours away and we have the perfect playlist to help you countdown into the new year.</h1>

<p class="">Whether you are having a party with friends or crossing over in church, music will in one form or another be a feature to see you through the last day of 2018 and usher you into the new year.</p>

<p class="">From pop anthems to gospel songs, the right tunes create the perfect atmosphere and charges up the excitement of hope, expectations and belief going into the new year.</p>

<p class="">So whatever your taste is, we have got you covered with the 7 favorite Nigerian songs that would put you into the right mood going into the new year.</p>

<p class=""><strong>Jaywon – This Year [Odun Yi]</strong></p>

<figure class="embedded_application" align="center"> <figcaption>Jaywon – This Year ODUN YI {Official Video}</figcaption> </figure>

<p class="">A prayer, a confession and a prophecy of faith is what Jaywon’s <em>’This Year'</em> offers the average Nigerian.</p>

<p class="">With lyrics like, <em>”We making money this year, no matter what them do things be better this year”</em>, Jaywon captures the everyday plea of the people and stirs hope where there seemingly is very little and who wouldn’t sing along when he promises, <em>”this year, this year, greater things”</em></p>

<p class="">The High life tune mixed with afro-pop was released in 2013 and you can bet that come the early hours of 2019, this will yet again be one of the most played songs on radio and at parties.</p>

<p class=""><strong>Dammy Krane – Amin</strong></p>

<figure class="embedded_application" align="center"> <figcaption>Dammy Krane – Amin [Official Video]</figcaption> </figure>

<p class="">Released in 2014, Dammy Krane follows an identical template to that of Jaywon as he again arouses a surreal hope of success coming with the new year.</p>

<p class=""><em>Amin</em> is simply a prayer. Steeped in simple lyrics and a call back hook, it is a prayer about succeeding in life, and getting what your heart desires.</p>

<p class="">For an artist who has had a fairly inconsistent career, this is one songs that has ensured that his legacy stays intact for a long while.</p>

<p class=""><strong>Victor AD – Wetin We Gain</strong></p>

<figure class="embedded_application" align="center"> <figcaption>VICTOR AD – WETIN WE GAIN (OFFICIAL VIDEO)</figcaption> </figure>

<p class=""><a href="http://bit.ly/2Sw25Us" id="438ccaab-dfac-495c-9dac-3a061dbd2392">’Wetin We Gain'</a> is one of the biggest songs in 2018 and it is not really difficult to see why.</p>

<p class=""><em>”Oluwa magbegbe mi, I want all this money, I no wan take the same step wey I take last year wey no work for me oh.” </em>No one wishes to repeat the mistakes of the past year and as we usher in a new year, it presents a clean slate for a lot of Nigerians to re-strategize and hopefully get things right </p>

<p class="">As we step into the new year, If we no make money, truly, <em>wetin we gain?</em></p>

<p class=""><strong>Burna Boy – Ye</strong></p>

<figure class="embedded_application" align="center"> <figcaption>Burna Boy – Ye (Official Video)</figcaption> </figure>

<p class="">Unarguably, the <a href="http://bit.ly/2An0Bok" id="74aaaa27-e8e4-4510-a11d-9764ea028a69">biggest Nigerian song of 2018</a>. Burna Boy scored a classic with <em>Ye</em> and come the new year, making the choice between the <em>’G Wagon or the Bentley'</em> is one that many will definitely seek to be making especially as it is the year of the general elections and irrespective of the plenty suffering, <em>”we can’t come and kill ourselves.”</em></p>

<p class=""><strong>CAC Good Women Choir – Odun Lo Sopin</strong></p>

<figure class="embedded_application" align="center"> <figcaption>Good Women Choir C A C Ibadan 01 Odun Nlo Sopin, Pt 1</figcaption> </figure>

<p class="">The classic anthem released In 1979 by the CAC Good Women Choir is the perfect final outcry for God to shine his light on us just before the year ends.</p>

<p class=""><a href="http://bit.ly/2SzmIiN" id="665213dc-8cf5-4db6-b07d-55016219130f">’Odun Lo Sopin'</a> is originally a hymn that was sung at the end of each year by all CAC churches but was soon transformed into a full record with the addition of two verses by the choir and decades after, the song remains one of the most played at gospel gatherings at this time every year.</p>

<p class=""><strong>Olamide – Poverty Die</strong></p>

<figure class="embedded_application" align="center"> <figcaption>Olamide – Poverty Die</figcaption> </figure>

<p class=""><strong>Olamide</strong>’s last single for 2018 <em>’Poverty Die'</em> is one that seeks to bring death to Poverty and who wouldn’t want that in the new year.</p>

<p class=""><em>”Money we no get focus”</em> is an interesting prayer point and backed by an infectious hook and lively percussion, ‘Woli’ [Prophet] Olamide leads us into the new year in a prophetic praise and worship fanfare that has us all singing along.</p>

<p class=""><strong>Chinko Ekun – ‘Able God’ feat Lil Kesh and Zlatan</strong></p>

<figure class="embedded_application" align="center"> <figcaption>CHINKO EKUN – ABLE GOD ft LIL KESH X ZLATAN IBILE [OFFICIAL VIDEO]</figcaption> </figure>

<p class="">Release in the last quarter of 2018, <em>’Able God'</em> ended up as one of the viral anthems for 2018.</p>

<p class="">Yet another song that comes as a prayer for wealth, success and breakthrough, <strong>Chinko Ekun </strong>alongside <strong>Lil Kesh </strong>and<strong> Zlatan </strong>not only captures the pulse of the streets but they also deliver the perfect soundtrack for the now trending dance, <a href="http://bit.ly/2Apmd3I" id="54ecab90-e5c6-4f50-b6b4-e3af97a210c4">Zanku</a>.</p>

<p class="">You only need to see the reactions of Nigerians when this song comes up to understand why this is a must-play into the new year.</p>

<p class="">Come 2019, the motto will be <em>”No more insufficient funds”</em> because <em>”a ti sise”</em> [We have worked].</p>

2019: Atiku Mandate Group Carpets Miyetti Allah For Backing Buhari

Atiku

The Atiku Mandate Group has tackled the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria over the alleged endorsement of President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election bid.

The group, in a statement issued in Abuja by Sir Sunny Areh, its Director of Media and Publicity, while condemning the action, described the Miyetti Allah as “one of the most destabilising groups that have wreaked havoc on Nigerians and looking more like an endorsement by Boko Haram.

It said the association’s action amounted to an endorsement of failure to protect lives and properties and a confirmation that there had been a covert and existing relationship between Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association and the President, who had been its life patron.

The Atiku group said: “It is strange, but we are not surprised because being life patron of Miyetti Allah, he (Buhari) has guaranteed the group the forceful land seizures from citizens across the country for their cattle colonies. The endorsement is a reciprocity of being the protector-in-chief of its atrocities.

“It is laughable that an association that acknowledges mass murders by its members is pledging to collaborate with security agencies to fish out bad eggs within its fold, when it has always been known that the group enjoys state protection.

“Nigerians should be on the alert on the group’s claims of its plan to mobilise 20 million votes for Buhari as there may be underhand strategies to use cattle grazing routes to ‘caravan’ aliens into the country and also engage in cross border voting.

While urging all communities across the country that had suffered devastating killings by herdsmen to reject Buhari at the polls for his deliberate failure to protect their lives and properties, Areh said all men and women of goodwill should ensure the emergence of Waziri Atiku Abubakar as the nation’s next President who would bring succour to all citizens and get Nigeria working again.

Over 5,000 Ogun Workers Write Promotion Exams

The Ogun State government has said that over 5,000 eligible civil servants due for promotion across the cadres in the state have sat for the year 2016/2017 promotion examinations respectively.

It said the exercise, which took place at the Moshood Abiola University Of Technology, Ojere, Abeokuta, the state capital, was organised by the State Civil Service Commission.

Alhaji Surajudeen Olusesi, Acting Chairman, Civil Service Commission, said the participants consisted of officers seeking promotion to the next grade levels and others seeking for upgrading, adding that the exercise was meant to test the capability of the participating officers and prepare them for the tasks ahead.

He said promotion of civil servants to next grade was not automatic, adding that officers must work harder towards achieving success in the exercise, in order to secure their promotion to the next grade level.

Olusesi hailed the government of Senator Ibikunle Amosun for deeming it fit, especially at this point in time, to endorse the promotion of over 5,000 workers in the state’s civil service.

Mrs. Amope Chokor, Permanent Secretary, Ogun State Civil Service Commission, said the introduction of the Computer Based Test (CBT) for officers on grade level 6 to 10 was to increase their proficiency and productivity in the use of computers, noting that it would also broaden their knowledge and well acquitted with computer.

She said that many officers were not vast in computer, but expressed delight with the exercise, adding that the participants comported themselves in well during the examination.

Buhari has history of bringing in looted funds, Atiku says

One-on-one apc

The Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has alleged that President Muhammadu Buhari has a history of bringing looted funds into the country.

Responding to an allegation credited to President Buhari that the PDP presidential flag bearer is planning to smuggle in looted funds into the country just before the February 2019 elections, Paul Ibe, the Media Adviser to Atiku said in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday that the new accusation, like their previous allegations, is another infantile outburst that tells more about the accuser than Atiku Abubakar.

The statement added: “For the avoidance of doubt, history shows that rather than smuggle in looted cash, Waziri Atiku Abubakar has a record of preventing looted funds from being smuggled into Nigeria.

“In 1984, it was Atiku Abubakar, as head of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Command of the Nigerian Customs and Excise Department, that stopped the ADC of the then Military Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari, from smuggling in 53 suitcases of looted money into the country.

“Young Nigerians and Millennials who may not be aware of this incident, will do well to Google it. Only the guilty are afraid. It is President Muhammadu Buhari who has a history of smuggling in looted funds and not Waziri Atiku Abubakar.

“In fact, Nasir El-Rufai, a favourite of the President and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, said as follows on October 4, 2010: ‘In 1984, Buhari allowed 53 suitcases belonging to his ADC’s father to enter Nigeria unchecked at a time the country was exchanging old currency for new.’l

“Only recently, Mr. Abubakar’s plane was searched, his accounts have been perused and his businesses have been thoroughly investigated with a fine tooth and nothing remotely corrupt or illegal has been found.

“In desperation, the Buhari administration released this statement to cover their shame on a day that the US based International Strategic Studies Association reported that it is the unprecedented corruption around President Buhari that has led to the recent setbacks in the war on terrorism in the Northeast and the heavy loss of lives amongst the military rank and file. May God save Nigeria from a government that values money over lives.

“We therefore urge Nigerians to note that it is Muhammadu Buhari who has a history and a record of smuggling in looted funds and it is Waziri Atiku Abubakar who has a history of preventing such from happening.

“And while they are at it, we urge them to tell Nigerians those behind Etisalat, now 9Mobile and Keystone Bank, now Polaris and how they suddenly possessed such wealth overnight.

“Finally, Nigerians should note that the Buhari administration cannot defend their record on jobs and poverty – the things of most concern to voters- thus, their only resort is slander. “

#YNaija2018Review: Serena Williams’ outburst, Tiger Woods return, Luka Modrić ends the Ronaldo/Messi duoploy… See the top 10 sporting moments of 2018

2018, like every other year, has been one of cheers and woes, and in the world of sports, it’s no different. The year 2018 saw its fair share of ups and downs, with moments that had people, either applauding in awe or shaking their heads in disgust.

Many moves were made and a few records broken, some iconic moments (that will stay in our hearts forever) were created alongside some villainous moments which we hope to forget as soon as possible.

Ynaija brings you some of our favourite moments in sports this year. But before we commence, here are some worthy moments that didn’t make it on the list, but could have.

Baker Mayfield joins the Cleveland Browns. Arike Ogunnbowale drills two buzzer beaters to secure a national title. Roman Reigns battles leukemia. Philadelphia Eagles wins the Super Bowl. Fourteen junior hockey players die in auto crash. France and Croatia finish first and second respectively at the World Cup. Drew Brees breaks Manning Payton’s passing record. Ronda Rousey joins the WWE.

Larry Nassar sentenced to 40-175 years for sexual assault

Justice for dozens of female gymnasts was served this year following Larry Nassar’s conviction. In a series of court proceedings, former US Olympics gymnastics doctor, Larry Nassar was finally convicted of serial sexual assault, after a number of gymnasts including underage girls testified that Nassar used his platform as a doctor, to take advantage of them. It was shocking the accusations that were laid against Nassar, but what took us by storm was the sheer number of girls that testified against him, a number somewhere around 156.

Mexico offsets Germany at the World Cup

Many pundits had predicted that defending champions, Germany will roll over their opponents, Mexico in their group stage match. However, the tale was different as the Mexicans pulled off a 1-0 victory, the first of two defeats the German Machines suffered at the competition.

President of France Emmanuel Macron, pictured with Croatia’s President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

This picture needs little explanation. It simply is as it presents itself, a heartwarming picture of a couple of world leaders setting aside pride and tension to appreciate the 2018 World Cup final match between France and Croatia, held at the Luzhniki Stadium Moscow, Russia.

Philadelphia 76ers celebrate too early

Foolishness or over excitement? You decide. In Game Three of the Eastern Conference semi finals, NBA playoffs, the Philadelphia 76ers faced off against the Boston Celtics.

In the final seconds of the game, the 76ers were down two points and needed to score either a two-point shot to tie the game, sending it to overtime or hit a three-pointer to win the game. Fortunately, with literally two seconds to go, 76ers shooting guard Marco Belinelli managed to shoot a last-second shot, which was initially thought to have been shot outside the three-point arc, making it a three-point shot, which would automatically entail a 1 point win against their opponent. This got the crowd excited and apparently the confetti guy too. Thinking they had won the game, the confetti guy let loose the confetti, but upon further review, the referees ruled the game a draw, Belinelli’s shot was a two-pointer, not a three-pointer. This was devastating as the basketball court had to be cleaned before the game went into overtime. In OT, it was clear that the early celebration had taken a mental toll on the 76ers players and they ended up losing the game to the Celtics.

Unified Korea for the Winter Olympics

Ever thought you would see South Korea and North Korea get along? Me neither. But owing to the Winter Olympics which held in PyeongChang South Korea, the two rival nations were able to set aside their differences and come together to host and enjoy the beauty that of the tournament. This move proved yet again that nothing brings people closer together than sports.

JR Smith’s NBA finals blunder

For those not so conversant with basketball, here’s a quick rundown. The man in question, the shooting guard for the Cleveland Cavaliers, has the nickname pipe god, JR smash, Henny master, and JR Henny. The Henny serves as a shortened version of the popular alcoholic drink, Hennessy. He was given this nickname owing to his dipsomaniac lifestyle and love for alcohol. Formerly a New York boy, JR Smith is no stranger to excessive clubbing and impulsive drinking, sometimes even before major games and in the NBA finals between defending champions, the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers, JR Smith made a last-minute blunder where he failed to shoot a free shot that would have won his team the game, instead he dribbled the ball out thinking that the game was already won. It is unclear if his actions were as a result of alcohol influence or if he simply made an honest mistake, regardless, the NBA fans have surely decided to blame it on the Henny.

The game went into overtime and his team ended up losing, and ultimately they lost 4-0 in the seven-game series.

As usual, the internet trolled him, making JR Henny trend for days.

Luka Modrić breaks Ronaldo and Messi’s decade-long Ballon D’or streak

This feat in itself needs no explanation. For the past decade, the highly coveted Ballon d’Or has rotated between current Juventus striker Cristiano Ronaldo and longtime Barcelona player Lionel Messi, but this year had a new winner – Croatia and Real Madrid midfielder – Luka Modrić.

Fury rises after Wilder’s “knockout” punch

The heavyweight championship match between WBC Heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury, was an all-round fierce battle between the pair. Through the twelve rounds, Fury had a slight edge over Wilder as he had landed more punches, but in the twelfth and final round, Fury received a clean hit from boxing’s strongest puncher, Wilder which should have knocked him out. He somehow miraculously got up and wilder Wmmediately followed it up with another punch, and again, Fury got up, before the round came to an end.

The match ended in a draw, but many are of the opinion that Fury should have won.

Nike endorses Colin Kaepernick

Biggest sports brand, Nike teamed up with National Football League player Colin Kaepernick. If the name rings a bell, it’s for good reason, this is the athlete who challenged the American system and lost his job for it. He had the whole world talking about his heroic act of defilement. And this year, Nike decided to show him in their support by making him their poster boy in an ad which would later be one of the highest trending ad of the year, earning Nike $6 billion in revenue.

Serena Williams’s outburst

There was a bit of a controversy in the US Open finals match between Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams, owing to some calls made by the umpire, Carlos Ramos, against Serena, which were initially thought to be questionable. And in the heat of the moment, Serena got emotional and accused the ref of sexism and being a thief. This created a huge spur, bringing the whole game to a halt. The incident was later investigated and Ramos was vindicated while Serena accused of overreacting.

Tiger Woods wins another title

Right off the bat, this headline doesn’t seem like a big deal. Tiger Woods winning a title shouldn’t come as a surprise, he is, after all, the best golfer of our generation and arguably the greatest golfer of all time, so it should come as no surprise that he won another PGA, right?

Well, it is not his victory at the PGA’s that put him on this list, it is how he became victorious. In one of the greatest comeback stories in sports history, Woods overcame several adversities, such as rehab, injuries and a controversial divorce, among other things, to win a championship after a five-year drought, at an age believed to be too old to still remain relevant. Also, the legion of supporters he had behind him as he pulled off the win at the East Lake Golf Course was awe-inspiring, and against all odds, he didn’t disappoint them.

Conor McGregor taps to Khabib Nurmagomedov

Arguably one of the biggest fights of the year, Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov, battled in a four round MMA match, where Conor ended up tapping to Khabib. You know it’s a big fight when the fight is practically for the pride of their nation and the defense of religion. In a press conference, Conor attacked Khabib’s religion, father and country, calling Khabib’s friend a terrorist, and in that moment, the fight became bigger than just a UFC fight.

On one side the people of Ireland were heavily invested in the fight, rooting for their countryman Conor, while the Russians did not fail to match Ireland’s enthusiasm. Both men laid it all on the line and at the end of it Khabib came out victorious, forcing Conor to concede defeat.

At the end of the fight, tempers flared and more offensive words were spoken, Khabib jumped out of the cage to attack one of Conor’s boys, and of course, some of Khabib’s boys jumped into the cage to attack Conor, which led to an all-out brawl between both fighters camp. The UFC security and the Nevada Police Force had to step in before calm was finally restored. A few arrests were made, mostly consisting of Khabib’s men.

The gross misconduct trended for days and brought the UFC and the world of combat sports into an ugly light which eventually angered the Nevada (the city where the fight held) Fighting Commission, and they had no choice but to punish both fighters.

Days after the match Russian President, Vladimir Putin had a sit down with Khabib and his father to congratulate him on his victory.
