Movie Review: ‘Up North’ an exciting visual delight

For the second part of the year 2018, one of the most talked about Nigerian movies was ‘Up North.’ While there are no exact reasons why this is so, it can be attributed to many things.

First, the trailer sold it off as a feel-good movie, generally the type of movie that you want to have some popcorn and a drink and just reel in laughter.

It also had some of Nollywood’s favourites with a story that anyone who had passed through or heard about the NYSC program could relate with.

The trailer may not have entirely had a lot of people sold on it, but it definitely got people excited.

‘Up North’ is a story about Bassey Otuekong (Bankole ‘Banky W’ Wellington), a spoilt and rebellious heir who, as expected, believes life is a bed of roses.

To punish him and try to curb his excesses for a while, his father, Chief Otuekong (Kanayo O.Kanayo) decides to send him to Bauchi for his compulsory service year, preparing him to take over the company and humbling him in the process.

In Bauchi, Bassey finds friendship, love and a passion that burns deep, and as his father would say, make him into a man that he was never before. ‘Up North’ is Anakle Film’s debut feature-length film, in collaboration with Inkblot Productions and a runtime of about two hours.

It is not exactly an original piece of storytelling, given that we’ve seen films like Legally Blonde (2001) where the wealthy person has to go on a journey of self-improvement, often with the aid of a person, but it’s definitely a good effort.

It turns to the NYSC experience to bring it home, seeing as many young people dread this for obvious reasons.

Movie Review: ‘Up North’ an exciting visual delight (glanceng)

If anything, it shows the service year in good light seeing as Bassey was reluctant at first, but then he ends up making a good friend in Sadiq (Ibrahim Suleiman) and finding love in Aminat (Rahama Sadau).

All that was left at this point, really, was for Bassey to finalize with a personal CDS project and get the accolades that come with it.

The film makes use of easy-breezy language to pass its message and you can see the effort to interject a couple of shady, and witty lines into the dialogue, which is very well appreciated.

Nonetheless, there are a couple of issues with the story, some that would have made the story appear better.

To begin, the love story between Aminat and Bassey seems so far-fetched especially seeing as there were no prior discussions or ground motive for it to be hinged on.

It would have been better for their love story to have a little bit of progression, something similar to what Sadiq and Aminat (Adesua Etomi-Wellington) had.

Also, at some point, it feels like everything was done in a rush, especially during the first few minutes of the movie.

It’d have been better to allow these things to play out and see how it goes. It may be a reach, but there had to be a reason why Chief Otuekong was referred to as ‘Chief’ by Bassey and his sister, Idara (Michelle Dede). I would have liked an explanation for this regard but we don’t always get what we want.

Apart from the little loopholes in the story, ‘Up North’ came correct in every other way. This film is definitely also going down as one of the Nigerian films with the best scores ever.

It borrows songs like ‘Bahd, Baddo, Baddest’ by Falz, Olamide and Davido, ‘Fresh Love’ by Dinachi and ‘Motherland’ by Sound Sultan to a couple of original Northern themed pieces done by Gray Jones Ossai.

The film also boasts amazing location which is another winner in the grand scheme of events. It is shot predominantly in Bauchi, with a few shots in Lagos, and for the period of the movie, it does a good job of whetting your appetite enough to want to visit Bauchi.

It will also come in handy that the governor of the state, who makes a cameo in the movie, is very interested in exposing the tourism potential of his state, and Up North actively serves this purpose.

The acting in the film is pretty decent, from start to finish. With performances from a stellar cast consisting of Kanayo O.Kanayo, Hilda Dokubo, Michelle Dede, Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Rahama Sadau, Bankole Wellington and Ibrahim Suleiman, it’s not that hard to see why.

However, the star of the movie is easily Ibrahim Suleiman, who in his role as a sidekick is very able to bring all the words to life, through his actions and most importantly, his facial expressions.

The camera work is great and whether it’s an aerial view or a closeup one, it properly brings the viewers in to share in what is happening at the moment.

Up North – Teaser

‘Up North’ is a beautiful movie and one that everyone needs to watch, especially filmmakers, because it’s a starter course in what strategic marketing should be like. It had its moments where it felt too much, but compared to what we see in the typical Nigerian films, we’d have this any day, any time.

It also serves so many purposes to various audiences and that really is the beauty of it. Apart from the tourist potential it serves and the rich culture and tradition, it also seeks to debunk the illusion that Northerners are generally illiterates and it does this so well. It is a visual delight, that is hilarious and entertaining.

‘Up North’ is directed by Tope Oshin and is out in the cinemas from 28th of December.

‘I’m Not A Criminal That Would Run Away’ – Dino Melaye Tells Police

Dino Melaye, the Senator representing Kogi West in the National Assembly, has said he would turn himself in to the police next week.

Recall that Melaye had raised the alarm earlier in the week that police operatives invaded his Abuja residence.

Speaking with Channels Television, Melaye stated that he was not a criminal and has no reason to run from the police.

He explained that the police invasion of his residence was unnecessary and that he will report himself to the police as soon as he returns to Abuja.

Melaye said: “I was informed that my house has been invaded. Over 40 policemen inside the compound and over 50 outside the gate. My staff were molested, beaten and handcuffed and taken away.

“Presently I’m outside Abuja. I’m a Senator of the Federal Republic of Abuja, I cannot run away. I will make myself available as soon as I’m back to town next week. I am not a criminal; I have not done anything wrong.

The lawmaker also accused the police of disobeying court order to release his international passport to him.

“The police have arraigned me in seven courts already. There is a judgement that my passport be given to me. For the past five months, the court order on the IG to return my passport they have refused to obey that order.

“Since April, my security details have been withdrawn by the Nigerian police. The resolution of the Senate for them to restore that has been ignored, all this is to expose me to attack and make me vulnerable.

“But God has been protecting me, he has been my shield and buckler, I cannot run away. I’m not a criminal, I will make myself available to the force headquarters as soon as I return on Monday, he added.

ASUU Strike: Buhari Govt Dragged To UN

ASUU

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has written to the United Nations (UN), urging the body to prevail on President Muhammadu Buhari to reach an agreement with leadership of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to end the ongoing strike.

In an urgent appeal dated 28 December 2018 and signed by SERAP senior legal adviser, Bamisope Adeyanju, the organisation said: “By failing to prevent and end the ongoing strike action by ASUU, the Nigerian government has defied and breached the explicit requirements of the right to equal access to higher education by Nigerian children and young people, under article 13(2)(c) of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

The appeal sent to Ms. Koumbou Boly Barry, Special Rapporteur on the right to education and Professor Philip Alston, Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights argues that: “The failure by the Nigerian government to reach an agreement with ASUU has also implicitly made access to higher education a privilege of the rich and well-to-do rather than a right of every Nigerian child and young person, as students in private schools continue to attend classes while those in public universities stay at home.

According to SERAP, “The failure to end the ongoing strike action by ASUU is also a fundamental breach of the right to higher education without discrimination or exclusion, as strike actions continue to penalise economically disadvantaged parents who have no means or lack the capacity to pay to send their children to private schools.

“The obligations of the Nigerian government to create the conditions necessary for the enjoyment of the right to education include to take preventive measures to address the root causes of strike action by ASUU and to take steps to end any strike action in a timely manner when it occurs.

“It is the responsibility of the government to preserve and strengthen education as a public good and a matter of public interest. Without the urgent intervention of the Special Rapporteurs, the ongoing strike action by ASUU would continue and this would continue to impede access to university education for the poor and marginalized.

“SERAP is concerned that Nigerian students in public universities have suffered many years of academic disruption as a result of the failure of successive Nigerian governments to address the root causes of strike action by ASUU and to timely reach agreement to end strike action and its devastating consequences on the right to equal and quality higher education.

“Persistent strike actions in the education sector have continued to cause disruption of classes and undermine both the quality and duration of students’ education.

“We note that the right to strike is one of the fundamental means available to workers to promote their interests. However, we are seriously concerned that the failure by both the Nigerian government and ASUU to make substantial progress in negotiations and reach amicable settlement to end the unduly prolonged strike action has undermined the right of Nigerian children and young people to higher education.

“The ongoing strike action by ASUU in Nigeria if not urgently addressed would continue to have grave consequences for the youth of our country as well as the country’s development and progress as a whole.

“Universal access is an essential prerequisite for the exercise of the right to education. But the failure by the Nigerian government to end the strike action by ASUU has contributed to denying students from disadvantaged backgrounds equal access to university education, as these students are unable or lack the capacity to pay to access private schools.

“This situation has aggravated existing disparities in access to university education in the country, further marginalizing economically disadvantaged parents and students.

“SERAP believes that providing Nigerian children and young people equal access to higher education should be the core public service functions of the Nigerian government. Providing public schools ranks at the very apex of the function of a State.

“SERAP believes that equal access of Nigerian children and young people to quality and uninterrupted education including at the university level would contribute to producing citizens who are fundamentally equal and people who actively participate in society. It would enable people to enjoy the rights as well as fulfil obligations that are associated with citizenship.

FG allocates over N610m to 36 states to train teachers

teachers NUT

THE Federal Government has said that over 610.5 million is allocated to the 36 states of the federation and Federal Capital Territory, Abuja for the training of teachers in basic education.

Executive Secretary of Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr Hamid Bobboyi, who made this known in Abuja, said this represents 15 per cent of the intervention fund as approved by the Federal Government.

He said: “To ensure effective implementation of the Teacher Development Programme (TDP), the Federal Government allocates 15% of its intervention fund to support the conduct of training.

“For the conduct of the 2016 TDP programme, the Commission allocated the N165,000,000 to each state and FCT. The fund is released in two tranches of N82,500,000 each,” he said.

He explained that this was to ensure quality of Universal Basic Education (UBE) delivery through the conduct of regular capacity building programmes.

Bobboyi said the Teacher Development Programme was targeted at all teachers and education managers of the public Early Childhood Care and Development Education (ECCDE) Centres, primary and Junior Secondary schools in all states of the Federation and FCT.

He added that the process of procuring instructional materials using the 2017/2018 fund was ongoing.

He noted that under the free-book initiative of the Commission, about 7,323,991 core textbooks in Mathematics, English Language and Basic Science and Technology, Social Studies as well as Computer Studies for primaries 4-6.

He, however, said one of the challenges faced in the implementation of UBE programme, was the large number of unqualified teachers with low competence and teachers not adequately prepared for basic education during pre-service training serving in the system.

He also noted that there was the challenge of non-utilisation of instruction materials by some schools, saying findings reveals that some the books supplied are kept in Head teacher’s office.
