PDP Raises Alarm Over Dino Melaye’s Safety

Pdp

As Police continued to lay siege in the Abuja residence of Senator Dino Melaye, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised alarm over the safety of the Senator.
The party said that with the continued lockdown on the residence of Senator Melaye by the police, the Muhammadu Buhari Presidency is turning Nigeria into a police state, where those opposed to President Buhari’s re-election are treated like enemies of the state.
PDP Presidential Campaign Organization, in a statement by its Director of Media & Publicity,
Kola Ologbondiyan, said that “the continued siege, which has been widely condemned as unwarranted and provocative, shows that the police under President Buhari, has become an instrument of oppression to subjugate dissenting voices ahead of the 2019 general election.”
The party called on Nigerians to note that the only sin committed by its Presidential Campaign Director of Civil Societies, Senator Melaye, is his return to the PDP and his forthright stand against the misrule of the Buhari administration, which are all well within his rights as a citizen.
“Since Senator Melaye, left the APC, the Buhari administration has continued to hound and harass him, as well as the members of his family with trumped up charges, all aimed to silence and put him out of circulation ahead of the 2019 general election.
“The PDP has become extremely worried about the safety of Senator Melaye and his family members under police lockdown and charges Nigerians to hold President Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) responsible should any harm befall him or any member of his family.
“This is particularly against the background of Senator Melaye’s outcry that the police planned to arrest and inject him with poisonous substance.
“The PDP hopes that opposition figures such as Senator Melaye will not suddenly become victims of ‘accidental discharge’, unexplained assassinations or mysterious motor accidents as move on to the general elections,” the party said.
Meanwhile, police have again intensified manhunt for Melaye two days after storming his house.
The police yesterday intensified its search for the lawmaker with a reinforcement of security within and around his residence along 11 Sangha Street in Maitama, Abuja.
The Police had arrived early Sunday with more officers and at least nine patrol vehicles to seal off all the entry and exit routes to Melaye’s house.
The Police officers also occupied the entrance to an uncompleted building directly behind Melaye’s house near Chadian embassy on Mississippi Street.

Karo Omu is a married, nursing mother based in the United Kingdom. Yet, she shakes trees in Nigeria and gets things done in Nigeria. Last year, Karo noticed the recession made the price of sanitary price skyrocket by nearly 100% and she knew she had to do something.

Karo, a feminist saw her movement go from just an idea to an entire discussion that transcended social media into mainstream conversations in real life that sought to inspire legal and tax reforms for the girl child. The movement now operates under the non-governmental organization, Sanitary Aid for Nigerian Girls.

By December 25, 2018, the organization would have assisted 10,000 girls and women across many states in Nigeria with over 12,000 packs of sanitary pads. Recently, her conversations even fostered an activist campaign on Twitter where people sought to aid her cause.

In a conversation with Pulse, Karo said, “The vision for 2019 is to start producing our own reusable pads and teaching girls and women how to do same. On how she does it, Karo says, “I do it, I have an amazing team, I can’t lie, they help me and I too don’t sleep.

This year, she has done it again with more a more vertically relatable effort that gleans political commentary, King of Boys. In a career dominated by men, she is not only making a name, she also thrives and bosses the men. King of Boys is definitely on its way to being the highest grossing movie of 2018.

Kemi is also a trained Lawyer and before this, she was a radio personality and then, a show host. Now, it seems whatever Kemi does, Kemi bosses. That is the female energy our women need.

The book, published by Henry Holt Books For Young Readers has broken her fresh grounds.

Through 2018, the Harvard University alum has broken fresh ground after another and it looks like she’s only getting started. The book explores the fantasy theme of her Yoruba roots while infusing with tenets that the West would understand.
Industry: Media

Milestone: Three-year deal with EbonyLife TV to co-produce The Dahomey Warriors with Sony Pictures Television (SPT)

Mo Abudu, CEO of EbonyLife TV

The Nigerian mediapreneur seems to only wax stronger as years become decades and decades become eras. A lot of people have branded her, ‘Nigeria’s Oprah Winfrey’ but such tag belies what she has achieved in her own right despite sharing a relatively similar career path with the billionaire.

Starting off as a Human Resource Management Consultant, Abudu started Ebony Life TV as a subsidiary of Media and Entertainment City Africa (MEC Africa), it now airs in over 49 countries. She, however, became vertically known across Nigeria with her hit talk show, Moments With Mo.

In March 2018, Sony Pictures Television (SPT) announced a three-year deal with EbonyLife TV to co-produce The Dahomey Warriors, a series about the Amazons who took on French colonialists in the 19th century west African kingdom — some of them were also women.

Year-on-year, Abudu keeps breaking fresh grounds and she plans a new programme to coach women in early 2019.

Genevieve Nnaji (OFR)

Age: 39

Industry: Nollywood

Milestone: Directed the first Nigerian movie on Netflix, ‘Lionheart’

___8779191___2018___8___28___11___Genevieve-Nnaji-1-1

Nnaji was already a staple of Nollywood as one of the first modern acts to break fresh grounds in the West. She appeared on Larry King Live and The Oprah Winfrey Show in the 2000s and her legacy was sealed as a legend and a role model worth emulating.

Little did we realize that she was only getting started. In 2018, her directorial debut, Lionheart was acquired by movie streaming service, Netflix and became the first Nigerian movie to achieve that feat.

Legend on legend for an already made legend.

The Super Falcons

Industry: Sports

Milestone: An 11th African Women’s Championship Title, even as the female game improves.

Super Falcons of Nigeria

In November 2018, the Nigerian Super Falcons, the senior female football team won their 11th African Women’s Cup of Nations, but it was more than just another routine win for the perennial winners.

They toiled for it and showed matured heads that made even cynical men turn around to enjoy the play on show. Across the team from the ever-confident goalkeeper, Tochukwu Oluehi, to the defensive titan, Onome Ebi, winning battles at 35, to the calm and ever technical and classy captain, Rita Chikwelu and then striding forwards; Franny Ordega and Asisat Oshoala, they were a joy to watch.

The Falcons came back from losing their opening games to beating the same foe in the final of the competition. In a country or even continent of sizeable football obsession, the Falcons showed a depth of admirable perseverance.

The women of Market March)

Industry: Activism

Milestone: Starting a perpetually relevant messaging of harassment of women in the marketplace — this one will morph into more than what it is now.

Marketmarchyaba

In October 2018, Pulse spoke with the founder or #MarketMarch, Damilola Marcus also known as, Omoge Dami and discussed what the movement was about. Alas, it was a necessary move to cut the public physical, emotional and verbal harassment of women in the marketplace.

In Nigeria, women can barely walk in the marketplace without being touched or even abused for refusing to be touched. Dami and her, which included people from Stand To End Rape and other positive movements marched on Yaba market on December 15, 2018, and history was going to be altered forever.

It was a heartwarming public display of women fighting the oppressor and engineering a new order in one fell swoop. The march also exhibited the sad tendency of the average Nigerian man with the oppression of women.

Since then, Nigerian social media has been awash with testimonies of how women can now walk freely in the market. Dami and her team claim they are only getting started and that is welcome news.

Nigeria’s Database Of Tax Payers Hit 35m –JTB

The Joint Tax Board (JTB), says Nigeria’s data base of tax payers has expanded from 20 million to 35 million.

The Executive Secretary of the Board, Mr Oseni Elamah disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Sunday in Abuja.

Elamah explained that the feat was achieved as a result of the ongoing database consolidation of JTB, an initiative being executed in collaboration with the Nigeria Inter Bank Settlement System (NIBSS).

He said that the figure of the taxpayers comprised both individuals and corporate bodies.

He said that this showed that there was massive expansion of database pointing out that one could imagine when that translated to actual taxes that were collected in Naira and Kobo.

“At the moment, we are trying to break them into classes of taxpayers and various jurisdictions where they reside, state by state.

“Hopefully, by first week of January 2019, this information will be communicated to all the states and then we will ask them to file their reports for tax assessment and it is then, we will tell Nigerians, how many are teachers, artisans, entertainers among others, he said.

Elamah disclosed that on the average, about 22 per cent growth in tax revenue had been recorded in both state revenue services and Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), when compared to 2017.

He added that this figure was collated as at third quarter; and by the end of last quarter, it would move to 30 per cent.

According to him, by end of the year, 2018 will be one of the best results ever posted by FIRS and most of the states.

He stated that with the advent of the Tax Identification Number (TIN), and Bank Verification Number (BVN), the tax authorities were currently tackling incomes of taxpayers and ensuring they paid their taxes as at when due.

He assured that the board would create more awareness in increase in voluntary compliance and also enhance the capacity of workers to be tax professionals.

Elamah also commended the Executive Chairman of FIRS and the JTB chairmanc, Mr Babatunde Fowler for his support in achieving the feat within a short period of time.

Oba of Benin cautions youths against money rituals

The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has warned Nigerian youths to shun money rituals.

Oba Ewuare gave the warning on Sunday during a thanksgiving service at the Holy Aruosa Cathedral in Benin to round off the 2018 annual Igue Festival Celebrations.

He said youths who cling to the illusion that they could become wealthy by killing people or stealing female underwear for ritual purposes, would no doubt face the consequence.

He added that the behavior was abominable and alien to Benin customs and tradition.

The monarch interceded for Nigeria and her leaders and urged politicians and youths to shun acts that could undermine free, fair and credible elections in 2019.

The Oba also warned politicians to desist from violence and other acts inimical to the electoral process.

He cautioned youths not to allow themselves to be used as political thugs to cause mayhem during elections.

Police intensify manhunt for Dino Melaye

Court throws out Dino Melaye’s suit, gives INEC go-ahead with recall process

A detachment of the Nigeria Police on Sunday continued to lay siege on the residence the Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Dino Melaye, in Abuja.

On Sunday, a team of policemen intensified the search for the lawmaker with a reinforcement of security within and around his residence along 11 Sangha Street in Maitama, Abuja.

Residents around the street said that the team of policemen arrived early on Sunday and that at least nine patrol vehicles were seen around the residence.

It was learnt that the police had sealed off all the entry and exit routes to the house.

The team of policemen did not entertain questions from newsmen and it was discovered that the men of the Police Force also occupied the entrance of an uncompleted building directly behind Melaye’s house near Chadian Embassy on Mississippi Street.

The Police raid on Melaye’s residence commenced on Friday with men of the force laying siege to the lawmaker’s residence in a bid to arrest him.

The development is coming on the heels of a statement by Human Rights Lawyer, Mike Ozekhome, SAN, who said on Sunday that the raid showcases Nigeria on the throes of anarchy.

The statement by Ozekhome, SAN read: “On Friday, the 28th of December, 2018, a team of plain-clothed policemen, stormed Senator Dino Melaye’s house at No 11 Sangha Street, Maitama, Abuja, and barricaded the entire street before eventually forcefully gaining entry into his compound. The said plain-clothed policemen proceeded to beat up Melaye’s security whom they immediately handcuffed. They also arrested the cook and other domestic staff in Senator Dino’s residence.

“His relatives approached the head of the said security to find out why they were treating Dino, a serving Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in such high-handed and disdainful manner. The head of the rampaging police while declining any specific answer, told Dino’s relatives that they came from the Commissioner of Police FCT, on whose instructions, they were acting. Dino Melaye’s brothers demanded to see the warrant of arrest if they had any, but the police refused to show any such warrant. The Police also declined to disclose the reason why they are laying siege on the house of a sitting Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“The Nigeria Police led by the Commissioner of Police FCT, proceeded to do the unthinkable; they disconnected electricity supply to the premises of Senator Dino Melaye, thereby putting his life and health in grave danger. They have also disconnected water supply to his home thus denying him access to water, a concomitant to the basic constitutional right guaranteed by section 33 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as altered. Senator Dino Melaye has been without water and food, for the past 72 hours and counting as the said policemen, have blocked the gate, denying family members and his friend’s access to him. Senator Dino Melaye is a known asthmatic person and has been denied access to his medications and personal physicians for the past 72 hours and counting.

“The police are now firing several gunshots within Senator Dino Melaye’s compound and have now started shooting canisters of tear gas through the windows of his house.

“It would be recalled that Senator Dino Melaye, had on the 24th of December 2018, cried out to the world, that he had received credible information that there was a grand plan by the police, sponsored by Yahaya Bello, the Governor of Kogi State, to arrest him and inject him with lethal substances to terminate his life. It would also be recalled that Senator Dino Melaye, who has since parted ways with his earlier party, the ruling APC, has been quite vociferous in the condemnation of the poor performance of the Federal Government and his state government under Yahaya Belo. Consequent upon this, he has received fusillades of politically motivated attacks on his life and political career by his traducers using the instrumentality of the Nigeria Police and their operatives.

“Members of the public would also recall how Senator Dino Melaye had personally narrated his ordeal on Thursday, the 19th day of July, 2018, that whilst he was returning to his hometown, around Iya junction, Ayetoro Gbede, Ijumu LGA, Kogi State, in a convoy of over twenty vehicles, after the commissioning of his constituency projects, in Kogi West Senatorial District, he was attacked by armed Policemen and his vehicle shot at sporadically by the armed policemen who attacked him.

“Our Chambers had written a petition to the IGP, intimating him of the premeditated violent attack on Melaye. Till date, we have not received any response to the said petition.

“Senator Melaye had also informed our Chambers, that recently, on the 12th of October 2018, the Commissioner of Police, Kogi State, sent armed policemen who invaded his country home in Kogi State, looking for him. He believes the invasion was targeted at assassinating him, over his political views.

“It was only when the villagers raised the alarm that the said armed policemen, fled. Senator Dino Melaye then petitioned The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and copied the said petition to several International Organizations. And again, no response was received in respect of this petition till date.

“Senator Melaye informed us, that his party, the People’s Democratic Party, had scheduled its party campaign in Kogi State, for the 5th of January, 2019.

Senator Dino Melaye who is also contesting for the Senatorial slot of the Kogi West, Senatorial District, is scheduled to be one of the keynote speakers on that day. Senator Dino Melaye verily believes that the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, who has always seen him as a palpable political threat, is doing everything possible, including the use of the publicly financed Nigerian Police apparatchik, to harass, intimidate, silence, possibly kill him, thereby ultimately frustrating his senatorial ambition.

“Senator Dino Melaye recalls how the said Kogi State, Governor, in his desperate attempts to undo him politically, had stage-managed his botched recall from the Senate, which process failed ignominiously even while he was chained to a hospital bed by the same Nigeria Police. The Nigeria Police had since April 2018, withdrawn Senator Dino Melaye’s police security attached to him. The Nigerian Police had refused all requests, to restore Dino Melaye’s security, despite several letters written to them, including letters from the Senate President and the Clerk of the National Assembly.

“The same Nigerian Police, have refused to release Senator Dino Melaye’s International Passports, which is in their custody, notwithstanding a clear order of the court directing them to release the same forthwith. Our Chambers had written several letters to the Inspector General of Police, urging it, to obey the subsisting court order, but the IGP, had consistently flouted the said court order. Till date, Dino’s passports are illegally and wrongfully detained by the same police, notwithstanding the subsisting court order, and several letters from our chambers urging them to release same.

Senator Dino Melaye has was charged in different hierarchies of the Nigerian court, within five months, over six times, over trumped-up charges. Some of these frivolous charges have either been withdrawn by the police, or struck out by the court.

“It is highly condemnable that the recent attacks on Senator Melaye’s life appear obviously state-sponsored by his political enemies using the instrumentality of willing police, to prevent him from campaigning and thus frustrate his political ambition of returning to the Senate.

“The entire conduct of the Nigeria Police Force thus far leaves much to be desired. It is compromised, despicable, selective, arbitrary and amounts to a brazen abuse of office and repression of a Nigerian citizen, Senator Dino Melaye, whose fundamental rights, they have serially trampled upon. The life of Senator Dino Melaye is now in grave danger.

“The last time we checked, Nigeria is supposed to be operating a constitutional democracy, and not fascism or under a police state. This is no time for a “golden silence by Mr President, who is the ultimate supervisor of the Nigerian Police Force under sections 214 and 215 of the 1999 Constitution.

This is a humble SoS sir. Kindly treat sir, with promptitude and the urgency of now.
