Don’t Allow Cultists Occupy Govt House, Dickson Warns Bayelsans

Yenagoa – Ahead of the November 16 governorship election in Bayelsa State, Governor Seriake Dickson has warned the people not to make the mistake of allowing “cultists and ungodly politicians” to occupy Government House after his tenure in February 2020.

Asking the people to reject such politicians, Dickson urged them to also ensure that politicians with devilish habits should not use political appointments as a bait to lure the persons into the destructive fold of cultism and that they should not have access to political control in the state.

A statement by his Special Adviser, Media Relations, Fidelis Soriwei, quoted the governor as having made the comment during the monthly praise night for May in Yenagoa on Thursday night.

He called on the people to be vigilant and supportive to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and to await the discovery of the leader God had picked to govern the state after him.

He stressed that the person anointed to lead the state was known to God and waiting to be discovered.

He predicted that the contest of the governorship of Bayelsa would be characterised by a lot of trials, temptations and fierceness because of the high price of the state.

Dickson said, “You should be vigilant and support your party and government. Pray for God’s direction. This earth has no power to give what God has not given. The leader God has anointed is there. He is waiting to be discovered.

“There will be a lot of trials, temptation because the price of Bayelsa is very high. Don’t be surprised if the conflict gets fierce. It will get hot before it gets cold. From 2012 to date, they did a lot of things, but we are still standing and counting.

“With your support, no man or woman who subscribes to evil, who does not know what is good, what is godly, shall ascend the throne, no one who initiates our children to cultism will be there.

“No cultist will ascend the seat of Bayelsa, none who will initiate our sons or brothers and sisters before they get one patronage or appointments or the other. And that is happening in some states, but it will not be our portion in Jesus name.â€

The governor also restated his call on the leadership of the ruling PDP to give between 20 to 30 percent of the councillorship positions as well as the Rural Development Areas to women and youths.

He said that the women and the youths should be encouraged with political positions as a reward for their wonderful support for the party over the years.

Dickson, who commended the men for accepting the proposal, added that the state would have the highest number of female councillors this year.

Three JAMB Officials In EFCC Custody For N47m Fraud

EFCC

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama has ordered that three officials of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) be remanded in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over their alleged complicity in the theft of their employer’s funds estimated at N47.18 million.

The officials are the State Coordinator, JAMB Zonal Office, Plateau State, Yakubu Jekada; the State Coordinator of JAMB office, Benue State, Samuel Sale Umoru and a clerical officer in the Benue State office in Makurdi, Mrs. Philomina Chieshe.

Justice Peter Afen gave the order for the defendants’ remand shortly after they were arraigned on two separate charges of eight and four counts filed by the EFCC.

They pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to them.

Jekada was arraigned on a four-count charge in which he was accused of misappropriating N11, 189,000.00, while Umoru and Chieshe were arraigned on an eight-count charge in which they were accused of misappropriating N36 million, which Mrs. Chieshe was said to have claimed was swallowed by a snake.

Justice Afen adjourned to Monday for an argument of the defendants’ bail application and the hearing of another charge also filed by the EFCC.

The charge against Yakubu, marked: CR/339/19, reads:

That you Yakubu Jekada between 2009 and 2016 in Abuja within the jurisdiction of this court while being the State Coordinator of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) zonal office, Plateau State and in such capacity entrusted with dominion over certain properties to wit; 11,189 units of e-facility cards of JAMB committed criminal breach of trust in respect of the said properties when you disposed of the cards without duly rendering accounts of the disposals to JAMB and you thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 315 of the Penal Code Law.

*That you Yakubu Jekada between 2009 and 2016 in Abuja and Plateau State, within the jurisdiction of this court while being the State Coordinator of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Zonal Office, Plateau State, dishonestly misappropriated the sum of N11, 189,000.00 belonging to JAMB, an agency of the federal government of Nigeria and you hereby committed an offence contrary to Section 308 of the Penal Code and punishable under Section 309 of the same law.

That you, Yakubu Jekada between 2009 and 2016 in Abuja and Plateau State within the jurisdiction of this court while being the State Coordinator of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Zonal Office, Lokoja in such capacity entrusted with dominion over certain properties to wit; N11,189,000 million, being proceeds realised from the sales of e- facility cards belonging to JAMB, committed criminal breach of trust by dishonestly using the said funds, and you thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 315 of the Penal Code Law.

*That you Yakubu Jekada, between 2009 and 2016 in Abuja and Plateau State within the jurisdiction of this court while being the State Coordinator of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Zonal Office, Plateau State used your position to confer unfair advantage to yourself by converting to your own use the sum of N11,189,000.00 being the proceeds from the sale of e-facility cards of JAMB and you thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other related offences Act.2000.

In the charge against Umoru and Mrs. Chieshe, the lady was said to have, under further interrogations in June 2016, claimed that a total sum of N36.5m, being the value of the shortfall of unremitted e-JAMB cards, “disappeared as a result of manipulation from the Kingdom of Darkness.

The EFCC said Mrs. Chieshe “offered such unbelievable explanation, knowing same to be false, and thereby committed an offence contrary and punishable under section 139(a) of the Penal Code Law.

The two defendants were said to have in 2015, offered N48,500 bribe to an auditor, Mr. Ibrahim Oba, who was sent to Benue from Abuja office of the organisation to vet the accounts.

They were said to have committed criminal breach of trust with respect to 410 units of Change of Course Cards of JAMB, as well as failed to remit proceeds from the sales of e-facility cards belonging to the examination body.

The defendants allegedly committed the fraud that was blamed on ‘the mysterious snake’, between August 2014 and July 2016. The prosecution maintained that their action was contrary to sections 97(2), 308, 315 and 139 of the Penal Code Law, likewise section 17(1) (c) of the Corrupt Practices and other related offences Act, 2000.

BREAKING: JAMB Releases 4,536 Withheld UTME Results

Kayode Ajiboye

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has released the withheld Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination results of 4,536 candidates.

According to the board, the results were released following the consideration of a committee that reviewed the results of 4,760 candidates that were earlier withheld for multiple facial matches with different names during registration for the examination.

JAMB’s Head of Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, broke the news in a statement Friday in Abuja.

He stated that the release became necessary following facial match recognition carried out by specialised software and Information Technology (IT) experts.

“Following the consideration of the Committee on the 4,760 candidates whose results were withheld due to multiple facial matches with different names during the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) registration exercise, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the results of 4,536 absolved of complication.

“The release became necessary following facial match recognition carried out by specialised software and IT experts, the statement said.

He further disclosed that the board had released the UTME results of 231 candidates who sat the examination at the Nigeria Navy Secondary School, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Benjamin said the board has, however, suspended the centre for “acts not acceptable to the board.

He said the results of 127 candidates would be subjected to further physical examination while those of 97 candidates established to have been involved in multiple registrations and other forms of infractions have been withheld.

According to him, candidates whose results would be subjected to further physical examination would be contacted and must appear before an inspection team to clarify other likely areas of multiplicity.

He said the 127 candidates have been grouped into zones for convenience and easy accessibility.

“The board has also released the result of 231 candidates who sat for the examination at the Nigeria Navy Secondary School, Abeokuta, Ogun State from the diligent investigation, it was discovered that all that transpired was not the fault of the candidates. However, the centre has been suspended for acts not acceptable by the Board.

“Out of the number subjected for screening, the Board would subject the results of 127 candidates for further physical examination while the results of 97 candidates established to have been involved in multiple registrations and other forms of infractions have their results withheld.

“Those to be subjected to further physical examination would be contacted. They must appear before an inspection team to clarify other likely areas of multiplicity. The 127 have been grouped in zones for convenience and easy accessibility.

FRSC Hails Special EId- El Fitr Operations

FRSC

Olorundare Enimola

Lagos – The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC)                 Ogun State Sector Command, in a report made available to Daily Independent, has commenced the 2019 EID-EL FITR Special Patrol Operations from Friday 31 May to Sunday 09 June 2019.

The Special Patrol Operations will focus on, Excessive Speed; Dangerous Driving; Wrongful Overtaking; Lane Indiscipline; Use of Phone while Driving; Seat Belt Violation; Overloading Violation; Tyre Violation (expired/ substandard) as well as Speed Limiting Devise Violation and Passenger’s Manifest Violation by commercial vehicles.

A total of one thousand five hundred (1,500) personnel comprising Regular and Special Marshals have been deployed to oversee traffic activities on the highways in Ogun State especially along the Expressways of Lagos – Ibadan; Sagamu – Ijebu-Ode; Abeokuta – Sagamu; and Abeokuta – Ifo – Sango – Ota – Lagos Expressways. Other corridors being focused are the Abeokuta – Ibadan and Ota – Idiroko International Corridors.

The under listed Operational Equipment have been provided to ensure the desired impact on the entire stretch of highways in Ogun State. 25 patrol vehicles, 3 life – support Ambulances, 3 patrol motorbikes, 1 heavy duty tow Truck.

Traffic Control Areas by FRSC personnel have been set up to ensure easy interventions to traffic distress from the boundaries of Ogun State with neighbouring States of Lagos, Oyo and Ondo States. Traffic Control Areas have also been established at Mowe, Sagamu, Ogere, Ogunmakin, IJebu – Ode, Ifo, Ota and Abeokuta.

In addition, all the FRSC’s Road Side Emergency Clinics and Ambulances Points at ITORI; SAGAMU; IJEBU ODE and OGUNMAKIN will operate 24 hours Rescue Operations throughout the duration of the Special Patrol.

The Command has also embarked on aggressive Public Enlightenment Campaigns at the various Motor Parks and Religious Institutions across the State.

Motorists travelling during this period to celebrate with their loved ones are advised to be extra careful while travelling and should pay special attention to Construction Areas where overtaking is prohibited and maximum speed is pegged at 50km per hour.

It is important to particularly note construction zones where traffic is diverted especially at the 5km stretch of road between Fidiwo ( around OgunMakin /Alapako ) and Ogere , as well as the 5km stretch of road between Car Park C at Mowe and Oremeji up to Kara / Ibafo, which are all situated on the ever busy Lagos – Ibadan Expressway.

Equally of note is IYANA ILOGBO/ OWODE along the Abeokuta – Ota – Lagos Corridor, currently undergoing rehabilitation with traffic also diverted within that area.

The FRSC frowns at any motorist travelling at speed beyond 50km per hour or overtaking at designated construction zones, as these construction zones, where traffic are diverted, albeit their very short distances, have been responsible for about half of the road traffic deaths in Ogun State this year.

Accordingly, motorists arrested for contravening construction zones regulations during this period may be impounded until after the yuletide.

The FRSC Ogun State Sector Commander, Clement Oladele, appealed to motorists to demonstrate the reason of this season by showing love to fellow road users by obeying traffic rules, to arrive home safely, and celebrate with their loved ones. He has therefore warned that any motorist apprehended flouting traffic rules, especially construction zones violations, would be treated as driving dangerously and risk being issued ticket for fifty thousand (N50,000) naira fines or outrightly prosecuted.

CAN Trains Church Leaders AS Divorce Upsurge Gets Worrisome

can

By Juliet Oyoyo

With the increasing cases of divorce, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Kaduna State Chapter has trained pastors and church leaders on the need to contract marriages in line with the laws of the land.

In collaboration with Christian Lawyers Fellowship of Nigeria (CLASFON), CAN believes that training of Church leaders is necessary in order to tame the tide of rising cases of divorce and land dispute in the Christendom.

Rev. John Joseph Hayab, the CAN chairman in the state, said, the significance of the training was to help clergymen and church leaders to know the provisions of the law regarding landed properties and marriage under the Act.

Hayab said, “So many of us acquire lands to build churches, only to find ourselves being challenged in court. So, we felt, instead of the noise about those things, we need to guide the church to properly follow the law.

According to him, “When people have proper documentation of their properties, they know what the law says about their land, it would reduce some of the problems we are facing.

Hayab noted that “Many of our marriages today are been challenged in court because either the Pastor or those who are in charge are not licensed to officiate that marriage or it was officiated in a church or a centre where it is not licensed to conduct marriages. So, we want things to be done according to law.

The Chairman of the Christian Lawyers, Kaduna State, Barr. Seth Nickson said the association collaborated with CAN to educate them about “the laws of the land and not to fall in the wrong arm of the law.

Seth said, “Practically, what we did today is just an enlightenment campaign to let the church leaders know some of the things that they are doing right and some things that they are doing wrongly, that they should take corrections.

70,000 Unclaimed Driver’s Licences In Lagos – FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Zone 2 Command, on Friday said that there were no fewer than 70,000 unclaimed driver’s licences in Lagos State.

Assistant Corp Marshall Samuel Obayemi, the head of command comprising of Lagos and Ogun, disclosed this during a visit to the palace of Akran of Badagry, Aholu Menu Toyi 1, in Lagos.

He expressed concern that Lagosians who had gone to check their driver’s licences and discovered that they were not ready often refuse to go back for rechecking.

“The truth of the matter is that FRSC is in charge of driver’s licences but different licence offices do the distribution.

“Since people are not forthcoming, we are now working with various boards of internal revenue to see that these unclaimed licences are collected.

As at today, we have about 70,000 yet to be collected driver’s licences in Lagos State alone. That is why we started “Operation Show Your Licence.

“The idea behind this is that when we stop them and find out that some don’t have licences, we encourage them to go to various licence offices to collect their driver’s licences.

“As I speak to you, some of these licences have expired because they did not collect them after three years.

“Some people would have died while some would have relocated to other states, but there are still some who are around who are yet to collect it.

“It is our hope that at the end of the exercise, there will be drastic reduction in the unclaimed licences, he said.

Obayemi urged people who are yet to collect their licences to go to different licence offices in Lagos for collection.

The commander said that he was in Badagry to receive blessing from Akran and to visit the FRSC Unit there and familiarise with the personnel.

“When you take over a command, as a commanding officer, the normal thing is to go round all formations and familiarise yourself with other personnel.

As a point of call, I am here in Badagry to receive Akran’s blessing and I feel comfortable here.

“We run into problems with road users in Badagry and every road user is a subject of Akran. So, we know that when there is problem, we run to Akran for solution, he said.

Responding, the Akran of Badagry, thanked Obayemi for visiting his palace and assured him of the support of  the people of Badagry.

Akran blessed him and prayed that God would guide and protect him throughout his stay in office.

Chief Tunde Giro, the Depegan of Badagry Kingdom urged the zonal commander to give more patrol vehicles to the FRSC Unit in Badagry in order to be more effective.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the commanding officer also visited the Seriki Abass Slave trade Museum and the First Storey Building in Badagry.

Obayemi was accompanied by the Unit Commander of Badagry FRSC, Mr Babatope Agbaje and other personnel from the unit. (NAN)

How PENGASSAN Workers Reacted To Francis Johnson’s Death

Activities at the Lagos headquarters of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) came to a halt on Friday when the death of the association’s president, Mr Francis Johnson, was announced.

According to NAN, scores of workers at the union’s office wore gloomy faces, an indication that they were devastated by the development.

The workers declined to talk on the life and times of Johnson, saying that the union had already issued a statement on the death.

They, however, described the unionist, who hailed from the Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State, as hard working.

No fewer than 30 union leaders from various affiliates of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria had signed the condolence register opened at about 9am.

A statement earlier issued by Mr Frank Esanubi and Mr Lumumba Okugbawa, Deputy President and General Secretary, respectively said that Johnson died in the early hours of Friday in Abuja.

Ijaws Want A Probe Of Proposed Gelegele Seaport

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the call was made in a statement signed by the president of the Olodiama Youth Council, Mr Tari Opobunu, which was released in Benin on Wednesday.

The statement said that the project was ill-conceived, designed to fail from the onset, and also meant to disparage the Ijaw community of Gelegele, in the Ovia North East Local Government Area of the state.

It noted that although the Gelegele Community had earlier given their support for the proposed seaport, unfolding events have caused the people to realise that the project was just being used as a conduit pipe to siphon tax payers’ money.

The community also alleged that the state government was using the project to cause a crisis between the Ä°jaws in Edo and the Bini people.

The statement noted that without any consultation with the Gelegele community, the government changed the name of the proposed port from Gelegele seaport to the Benin River Port, because of its sinister motive.

“We wish to inform Edo people that the Ijaws, in general, and the people of Gelegele, in particular, have given all necessary support that any responsible and result-oriented government will need to actualise any people-oriented project, as it relates to the development of the Gelegele seaport.

“It will also interest the public to know that as we speak today, there is nothing visible that is ongoing at Gelegele, as regards the seaport project.

“Though we have always been skeptical towards the foot dragging of the state government, we got wind of the change of name from Gelegele Seaport to the Benin River Seaport, without any form of consultation whatsoever.

“We consider this as an affront to us as a people and a calculated attempt to undermine our integrity. We, therefore, call on the Edo House of Assembly, the EFCC, the ICPC and most especially, the National Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), to investigate all issues relating to the gelegele seaport project.’’

Meanwhile, the Edo Government has, however, allayed the fears of the people of Gelegele on the Seaport Project.

Mr Crusoe Osagie, Special Adviser on Media and Communications Strategy, to the Edo Governor, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin on Friday that the project was being executed in stages.

He explained that although he had no specific details on the project costs and its mode of financing, the project was being implemented in stages.

Osagie also said that the name of the Port should not be an issue, “but what should ultimately be of concern to the people should be the completion of the project.

“Every single transaction that the state government is going to do about the project is being implemented in stages, at the moment.
“What is being done at the moment are the regulatory aspects of the project which basically concern its framework.

“After this, we will move to the next stage of the project which is the drawing down of the actual project and, thereafter, the physical implementation aspect.

“İn any case, when the state government announced this project, it  did not say it was going to be completed under a single term. These are transactions that can take five to six years to be completed.

“İt is into the second term that some of these projects will actually take shape; it will even transcend the life of this administration. For instance, the Azura Power Plant was conceptualised under the Gov. Oshiomhole’s administration but it was not fulfilled under him.

“When change is coming, it brings some level of apprehension, some of these concerns are unnecessary. Whatever name the Port is called, the location remains the same and the people of that location ultimately will be the first beneficiaries of the project,’’ he said.

Ecobank To Challenge Judgment In Honeywell Case On Appeal

Ecobank

Ecobank Nigeria Ltd on Friday vowed to appeal the Lagos Federal High Court judgment in which the court held that Honeywell Group was not indebted to the bank.

The bank’s lawyer Kunle Ogunba (SAN) said he would consult with his client with a view to filing the appeal after further reviewing the judgment.

“Of course we do not agree with the judgment because the plaintiffs are still indebted to my client.

“We’ll definitely challenge the judgment on appeal, Ogunba said when contacted by newsmen.

Justice Ayokunle Faji declared that Honeywell Flour Mills Plc and its sister companies were not indebted to Ecobank Nigeria.

The judge made the declaration on Friday while delivering judgment in a suit filed by Honeywell against Ecobank.

Honeywell and its sister companies had, in their suit, sought the court’s declaration that they do now owe Ecobank, contrary to the bank’s claim they were indebted to the bank to the tune of N5.5billion.

The companies urged the court to hold that having made a full and final payment of N3.5billion as agreed at a July 22, 2013 meeting, they were no longer indebted to the bank.

But the bank insisted that in paying the N3.5billion, the firms did not comply with the terms of agreement.

It contended that the firms breached the agreement that the money would be paid before the end of August 2013 when examiners from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), who were in the bank to examine its books, would leave.

But the firms contended that the bank failed to tell it when exactly the CBN examiners were to leave, adding that it made the final payment on December 12, 2013.

In his judgment on Friday, Justice Faji ruled in favour of Honeywell and its sister companies, holding that they were no longer indebted to the bank.

The judge also awarded a cost of N250, 000 against the bank in favour of Honeywell and its sister companies.
