Benfica Confirm €126m Atletico Madrid Bid For Joao Felix

Benfica have confirmed that a €126 million (£113m/$143m) bid has been made for star forward Joao Felix by Atletico Madrid, according to Goal.com reports.

The Spanish side are looking to rebuild after a number of big-name players, including Antoine Griezmann, confirmed they would be leaving the club this summer, and 19-year-old Felix, who has been compared to Cristiano Ronaldo, is clearly part of the club’s plan moving forward.

Benfica have made clear in a statement released on Wednesday evening that they are considering the offer, but that nothing had yet been accepted.

Though the bid is in excess of Felix’s €120m release clause, Atletico’s insistence that the fee is paid over instalments means that Benfica are within their rights to reject the offer.

Felix has impressed in his native Portugal, scoring 15 goals and registering nine assists in just 26 league appearances last season, drawing interest from around Europe.

Juventus were among the teams strongly linked to the youngster, though it seems now that Atletico will win the race for his signature, something that should delight Diego Simeone.

“Historically, Atletico buy young players to develop them here. Like what happened with [Jan] Oblak, [Jose] Gimenez, Lucas Hernandez when they came through from youth teams – or Griezmann,” Simeone told Fox Sports Argentina earlier this month.

“We want a talented guy who can absorb our ideas. Our technical staff is already working on some situations to help to develop players.”

Simeone is dealing with a changing of the guard at Atletico, with a generation of veterans, including Diego Godin, Filipe Luis and Juanfran at the end of their contracts.

But the club have already moved to bring in Real Madrid midfielder Marcos Llorente and defender Felipe from Porto, and the move for Felix would be another boost in the club’s attempt to stay as a perennial contender in both Spain and Europe.

Under Simeone’s watch Atletico finished second in La Liga last season, ahead of city rivals Real and behind champions Barcelona.

And while a substantial rebuild is needed, Simeone is confident he will be able to adjust to new talents such as Felix.

“If Joao Felix and others come with different characteristics than we had before, then we will have to play differently,” he said.

“In training we will see where we are going … It is clear that this year’s challenge is one of the most complex since I arrived at the club.”

Juventus Close To €70m De Ligt Move As Five-Year Contract Agreed

Juventus are closing on a €70 million (£63m/$80m) transfer for Ajax captain Matthijs De Ligt, with a deal possible in the coming hours, according to Goal.com reports.

Sources have told Goal that the Serie A champions have received extremely positive signals from both Ajax and De Ligt’s agent, Mino Raiola, indicating a deal is close.

De Ligt is set to sign a five-year contract with Juventus, which will earn him a total salary of €12m per season in Turin made up of his base wages and bonuses.

Also included in the deal is a release clause – as requested by Raiola – that will be around €150m (£135m/$170m).

That leaves De Ligt on the cusp of joining the club whose Champions League run he brought to an end this past season, with his goal proving the difference in sending Ajax past Juve in the competition’s quarter-final stage.

Ajax would fall at the next hurdle, losing to Tottenham on away goals in stoppage time with the club just minutes away from the Champions League final – one of the few blemishes on a successful campaign that saw De Ligt captain his side to a domestic double, as well as help the Netherlands make the Nations League final.

De Ligt’s future has been the source of constant speculation for much of the season, with Ajax sporting direct Marc Overmars conceding the defender would be departing eventually for a top club in Europe.

The centre-back has been frequently linked to La Liga champions Barcelona, especially after the Catalan club signed his Ajax and Netherlands team-mate, Frenkie de Jong, earlier in 2019.

Yet, reports circulated Barca had pulled out of the running to sign De Ligt over concerns over his wages.

In addition, Manchester United reportedly jumped into the fray, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looking to improve his back line this summer, while Champions League winners Liverpool were also mentioned as a possible landing spot.

In recent days Paris Saint-Germain, behind new sporting director Leonardo, have attempted to wedge their way in between De Ligt and Juventus.

But it appears De Ligt has made his long-anticipated decision in favour of Juventus, with new manager Maurizio Sarri receiving an impressive new tool to go into his defensive arsenal as he aims to guide the club to a ninth straight Serie A crown and a first Champions League title since 1996.

Obaseki Lost Control Of Edo APC, Says General Airiavbere

Benin – Major General Charles Airiavbere (Rtd) on Wednesday blamed Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki for the crisis rocking the state House of Assembly, saying that the governor’s inability to proclaim the assembly properly shows that he has lost control of the State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This was contained in a statement the retired army general issued in Benin where he declared that the governor should not exonerate himself from the current Edo state Assembly imbroglio.

According to him, the unfolding drama in Edo State where the governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki failed to send the letter to the Clerk of the house for the formal inauguration of the State assembly is an indication that he has lost control of the APC in the state.

“This is all the more so considering the fact that all the 24 member-elect contested and were elected by Edo people to the State Assembly, on the platform of the APC, a party which the governor supposedly presides over as Leader.

“As it stands now, the governor still has a lifeline to be relevant and this is by doing the needful, which in clear terms is sending the proclamation letter for the inauguration of the elected members of the Edo State Assembly.”

Over 100 Migrant Children Returned To ‘Horrific’ Border Station

More than 100 migrant children have been returned to a Texas border station just a day after being moved out, a US border official has confirmed, According to Bbc.com.

Some 250 migrant children were moved from the overcrowded station following a scathing report on its conditions.

Lawyers given access by a judge said the children were “severely neglected”.

One lawyer told the BBC that children were “locked up in horrific cells where there’s an open toilet in the middle of the room” where they ate and slept.

A Customs and Border Protection (CBP) official confirmed to the BBC that approximately 100 migrant children were returned the facility.

The New York Times reports the children were transported back to the station after it had made changes to alleviate its overcrowding. They had been held at the facility for weeks.

Many parents crossing the US border, most of them from Central America, were separated from their children in 2018.

Separately, border patrol in Texas reported the deaths of seven migrants this week who had apparently attempted to circumvent the immigration system – including two babies and a toddler.

What were the conditions like?
“There was nobody taking care of these children… they were not being bathed on a regular basis,” Prof Warren Binford of Williamette University in Oregon told the BBC after visiting the Clint facility in Texas.

“Several hundred of the children had been kept in a warehouse that was recently erected on the facility grounds.”

“The cells are overcrowded… there’s a lice infestation there, there is an influenza outbreak. Children are being locked up in isolation with no adult supervision, who are very, very ill and they’re just lying on the ground on mats.”

Elora Mukherjee, another lawyer who visited the facility, told CBS News: “They were wearing the same dirty clothing they crossed the border with.”

“It is degrading and inhumane and shouldn’t be happening in America.”

As stories of substandard conditions in facilities have continued to emerge, some volunteers have tried to donate supplies – only to be turned away by border officials.

One group told the Texas Tribune they spent $340 (£267) on diapers, wipes, soaps and toys for the Clint facility, but were completely ignored by all the agents on duty.

Another Clint resident who tried to visit the Clint station told the Tribune: “Knowing what’s happening in your community and that you can’t give these kids supplies to clean or clothe themselves – it’s heartbreaking.”

Texas Democratic state congressman Terry Canales later tweeted that Border Patrol also told his office “they do not accept donations”.

What have the authorities said?
In a statement, the border authority acknowledged that the Clint facility was not suited to the task.

“US Customs and Border Protection leverages our limited resources to provide the best care possible to those in our custody, especially children,” it said.

“As our leadership have noted numerous times, our short-term holding facilities were not designed to hold vulnerable populations, and we urgently need additional humanitarian funding to manage this crisis.”

The agency said it had moved children to more suitable facilities as soon as space was available.

On Monday, Democratic Representative Veronica Escobar, who had been deeply critical of the reported conditions, said she had been told that only 30 children remained in the Clint facility.

What are lawmakers doing?
Democrats in the House of Representatives have been trying to push through a $4.5bn bill in emergency aid for the border, but the issue has divided liberals, particularly those in the Hispanic and Progressive Caucuses.

Some lawmakers, including congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, said the additional funding could be used by the White House to continue raids and detentions.

Others, like Appropriations Committee chair Nita Lowey, said Democrats should not allow anger at President Donald Trump “to blind us to the horrific conditions at facilities along the border as the agencies run out of money”.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi met her party members on Monday to discuss changes to the bill ahead of a Tuesday vote.

The White House has already threatened to veto the bill, saying it “does not provide adequate funding to meet the current crisis and…it contains partisan provisions designed to hamstring the Administration’s border enforcement efforts”.

The Trump administration has requested more funding for Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Departments of Defence and Homeland Security.

Where are the parents?
The separation of migrant children from their parents began in 2018 under a new “zero tolerance” policy from Mr Trump’s administration. It saw nearly 3,000 children separated before it was suspended.

Under the policy, announced in May 2018, those who cross the border illegally were to be prosecuted – which required their children to be taken into care.

Yet the US Government Accountability Office has reported that neither the Department of Homeland Security nor the Department of Health and Human Services were aware of the policy before it was publicly announced, and so were not prepared for the increase in children being kept imprisoned.

There are also limits set by the US authorities on how many people can claim asylum each day, resulting in a waiting period that can last months.

Some migrants and their families are instead attempting dangerous crossings far from the official ports of entry, or relying on people smugglers to make the journey.

The seven people found dead this week by US Border Patrol included a woman and her three children who were thought to have died from heat exposure and dehydration, Reuters news agency reports.

Two more men and an unidentified body were found on 19-20 June in two separate locations.

Man Shoots 10-Month Old Girl In Head After Her Mother Rejects Him

A little girl barely 10 months old, is recovering in hospital after allegedly being shot in the head by a man who had been rebuffed in his advances towards the baby’s mother, According to Independent.co.uk.

Jerry Dyer, head of the police department in Fresno, California, said 18-year-old Deziree Menagh, brought her daughter, Fayth Percy, to a party where Marcos Echartea approached her and put his hand on her.

Police said Mr Echartea grabbed her hand, and tried to pull Ms Menagh on top of him, according to NBC News.

Officers said Ms Menagh told them she barely knew Mr Echartea, 23, having met him just a week earlier. Upset by what had happened, Ms Menagh gathered her daughter and prepared to leave the party with a friend in her car.

Shortly afterwards, police said, Mr Echartea walked towards the car and fired three rounds into the window on the driver’s side of vehicle, one of them hitting the baby in the head.

“We have every reason to believe that Marcos Echartea knew baby Fayth was in that vehicle when he fired three rounds into the vehicle,” Mr Dyer said over the weekend.

“It should shock the conscience of every person in Fresno to know that we have a 10-month-old baby lying in the hospital fighting for her life.”

He added: “When our detectives brought him downtown, he had no remorse. He had just shot a 10-month-old baby and didn’t even seem to care or it didn’t phase him.”

Police said they intend to charge Mr Echartea with three counts of attempted murder over the incident, in the early hours of Sunday morning. Mr Dyer said they believed Mr Echartea was also responsible for a second shooting that occurred on May 27.

In that incident, they claim he fired several shots into an occupied home. While nobody was injured, one bullet struck just inches from a one-year-old child.

It was not immediately clear whether Mr Echartea had yet entered a plea or had a lawyer.

Mountain Mover Fire Ministry Pastor Jailed For Raping 14-Year-Old Girl

ABUJA – Justice Hussain Baba-Yusuf of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory has convicted Apostle Basil Princewill, Founder and General Overseer of Mountain Mover Fire Ministry of International, Nyanya Abuja for raping a 14-year- old girl, (names withheld).
Delivering judgement on Tuesday, the court convicted Apostle Princewill on counts one and three, while the randy pastor was discharged on counts two and four.
The court held that ‘’it is bad for a person to indulge in this kind of devilish act.
‘’Those who are supposed to be men of God are expected to be highly religious, exhibit decency and act as role models to their followers.
Considering the interest of the girl, the interest of the public and the rising cases of rape in the Church by those who serve in the Lord’s vineyard, the court has duty to send signal to the public to serve as deterrent to others.
Justice Baba Yusuf said the behaviour of the pastor was ‘’despicable, shameful, degrading and satanic’’.
‘’By this conduct, the accused deserves to be taken to prison wall like a monastery until he changes to a better man of God.
It is more worrisome especially when a person in question is looked up to as a man of God.
Consequently, the court sentenced Apostle Princewill to seven years imprisonment for raping and defiling a 14 -year girl and five years sentence for attempting to abort the resultant pregnancy.
Count one bordered on rape while count three was on allegation of attempting to cause miscarriage on the girl, by giving her drugs to take in order to abort the pregnancy.
The incident took place on July 27, 2011 to 31st December 2011.
Apostle Princewill was arraigned by an amended charge on dates 22nd September 2017.
Justice Baba Yusuf, said that from the evidence of PW1 (the victim’s Mother); that of PW2 (the victim) and the PW3 (Dr Ogunlade Felix), the accused perpetrated the act of rape ‘’under the pretence of carrying out deliverance and cleansing on the girl on July 27, 2011.
The court said it believed the evidence of PW1, PW2 and PW3 because, ‘’the PW2 was very detailed on what happened to her in the accused pastor’s office and same evidence was corroborated by PW1 and PW2.
‘’I am impressed by the testimonies of PW1 and PW2; I believe PW2’s story of how the accused rapes her.
‘’The accused did not deny the fact that he invited the 14-year girl to his office for deliverance and cleansing and the fact that he gave postnor to the girl to take, the court said.
According to Justice Baba Yusuf, ‘’I believe PW2 that on July 27, 2011, the Apostle in the guise of deliverance, took advantage of the girl by having sex with her.
The court noted that the act of ‘’slapping the girl constitutes act of threat to hurt her.
Justice Baba Yusuf said the fact that the accused took Favour to Fountain Head Medical Centre Nyanya was an indication that he knew something about the pregnancy.
More so, the court said it did not believe the testimony of the accused, stressing that apart from being full of contradiction, it was different from the testimony he gave at NAPTIP.
‘’I find it difficult to believe the accuse person’s incoherency, riddle puzzled testimony.
‘’Evidence of PW1 about what PW2 told her is direct and positive evidence, and not hearsay.
‘’Defence of the accused is not tenable and is therefore rejected. Prove of case of rape against the accused is sustained, the court held.
Count one said, ‘’That You Apostle Basil Princewill ‘Male’ 33 years of No. 5 Movers Avenue Nyanya , Abuja on or about 27th JUN, 2011 to 31st, December, 2011 at Mountain Mover Fire Ministry International and your house in Nyanya, Abuja within the jurisdiction of this court raped one Miss Favour Iwuoha ‘female’ 14 years by forcefully having sexual intercourse with her against her consent having put her in fear of hurt and when you impregnated her, you gave her drugs to take and abort the pregnancy but when the drug caused her bleeding, you took her to Fountain Head Medical Centre Nyanya where you paid Dr Felix Ogunlade to procure abortion on her and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 282 and punishable under section 283 of the Penal Code.
Count three states, ‘’That You Apostle Basil Princewill ‘Male’ 33 Years of No.5 Movers Ayenue Nyanya Abuja on or about January, 2012, at Nyanya within the Jurisdiction of this court, attempted to cause miscarriage when you gave miss Favour Iwuoha Female, 14years drugs to take and abort the pregnancy you gave her which resulted to her bleeding with knowledge that miscarriage will be the consequence of your act and thereafter you took her to Fountain Head Medical Centre Nyanya where you paid Money and miscarriage was carried out on her. You thereby committed an offence contrary to section 95 of the Penal Code.

Mo Abudu shares Email from Wole Soyinka over Plane Incident

It was all over the news yesterday, a young man refused to give up his window seat for Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka in a plane.

The young man had gotten to his seat to find Soyinka there. According to Tonye Cole, who shared the details of the incident, the young man told Soyinka that the seat he was on is his and he wants to sit there.

Well, Cole and a few others, including media mogul Mo Abudu faulted the young man for doing that.

“So so sad. That young man will get what he truly deserves. That is definite!” Mo said as a comment under Cole’s post.

Mo has now taken to Instagram to share an email she received from Soyinka concerning the incident.

“Good morning beautiful people. It’s 6.30am here in Los Angeles. Quite a bit has been said about me making certain comments about the young man that refused to give up his seat for Professor Wole Soyinka.” she said in the Instagram post.

She continued: “I will not comment further on this, however as you all know I LOVE and RESPECT Professor Wole Soyinka dearly. Based on this incident, I did receive an email from Professor Wole Soyinka this morning”.

She then went ahead to share the email with Soyinka’s permission. See below:

Hallo Mo,

Someone sent me Patrick Tonye’s comment on the plane incident, and I saw your brief comment. It was a very minor thing and I’d forgotten all about it. However, after reading the boy’s response, I became curious. First, I never exchanged a word with him throughout beyond inviting him to take his allotted seat. Never spoke a word to him after that. Certainly never exchanged contact. So of course, I wonder if it’s the very individual  who’s posted this or a total fake. The phenomenon of stolen identities takes very strange dimensions and has become a source of worry. I wonder if this is one such. Any way of your finding out. I don’t operate in the social media as you probably recall.

US, Russia, Israel Discuss Iran At Historic Trilateral Meeting

The door to negotiations between the US and Iran are still open, US National Security Adviser John Bolton said at an unprecedented trilateral meeting with top security officials from Israel and Russia on Tuesday, According to Thenational.ae.

Meeting in Jerusalem this week, the three countries discussed a “wider basis for co-operation” over Iran and Syria, according to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The summit coincides with the controversial US-led economic summit in Bahrain, part of US President Donald Trump’s much-maligned plan to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. It also comes amid heightened tension between the US and Iran following six tanker attacks in the Gulf of Oman and the downing of a US drone.

Mr Bolton said that the US president “has held the door open to real negotiations” with Iran but the leadership’s response has been “deafening silence”.

“They’ll (Iran) either get the point or … we will simply enhance the maximum pressure campaign further,” Mr Bolton told reporters on Tuesday following the summit.

“It will be, I think, the combination of sanctions and other pressure that does bring Iran to the table.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke at the second day of the summit between the three national security advisers: Russian Nikolai Patrushev, Israeli Meir Ben-Shabbat and Mr Bolton.

“As I’ve said many times, Israel’s relations with the United States of America has reached new heights under President Donald Trump’s leadership,” Mr Netanyahu said. “Equally, Israel is grateful that our friendship with Russia has got stronger – stronger than ever in recent years.”

Mr Netanyahu also emphasised the three country’s shared goal of the departure from Syria of “all foreign forces who entered after 2011”.

Mr Patruchev of Russia, an ally of both Iran and the Syrian regime, said recently that “Iran is in Syria at the invitation of the legitimate government and is actively involved in fighting terrorism”.

He also contradicted US claims that their drone, which was shot down by Iran last week, leading the US to launch an air strike that was called off at the last minute, was in international airspace.

“I have information from the defence ministry of the Russian Federation that this drone was in Iranian airspace,” Russian news agencies quoted Mr Patrushev as saying at a briefing on Tuesday.

Mr Bolton, meanwhile, reiterated the US assessment that the drone was not in Iranian airspace.

Mr Netanyahu and Mr Trump are aligned with a hawkish approach to restraining Iran’s regional activities, nuclear energy and possible weapons capabilities. The recent tensions have drawn the US closer to Israel, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries.

Naysan Rafati, Iran analyst for International Crisis Group, told The National that the summit is an “important marker” for Mr Netanyahu and that “Israel is a key player” over Syria.

While Mr Netanyahu has been warning about Iran developing nuclear capabilities for years, his concerns now centre on their presence across the disputed border in Syria.

The Russians have an “interest in making sure that Assad remains in power,” Mr Rafati said.

The big question mark is, he said, whether the Russians will address Israeli concerns over Iranian weapons and proxies in Syria, and how willing are they to dislodge the Iranians.

Last year the US pulled out of the Iran nuclear deal, which relieves international sanctions in exchange for Iran curtailing its nuclear ambitions. Tehran says their nuclear programme is only for civilian purposes and that US financial sanctions hurt everyday Iranians far more than the country’s leaders.

Boris Johnson Vows To Deliver Brexit ‘Do Or Die’ By 31 October

The Conservative leadership frontrunner insisted that he would ensure Brexit happens “come what may” by the autumn deadline – as he mounted an all-out assault on Theresa May’s “pathetic” time in office, According to Politicshome.com.

In an interview with TalkRadio, the Conservative hopeful said he would put his Brexit plans “into action” on day one of his premiership if he wins the battle to succeed Mrs May.

“So we are getting ready to come out on 31 October, come what may,” he said.

And he added: “Do or die. Come what may.”

Asked whether he would resign if Brexit did not happen by the current Hallowe’en deadline, he said: “I think that it follows from everything that I’ve said that I think politics is at a crossroads in this country and it is fundamental to trust in politics that we come out of the EU.”

‘MOROSITY AND GLOOM’

Mr Johnson meanwhile used the interview to launch a direct attack on Mrs May’s record in government, arguing that the Prime Minister had never “really wanted to come out” of the EU.

“I think a bit of positive energy would help, frankly,” he said.

“I’ve never seen such morosity and gloom from a Government.

“For three years we’ve been sitting around wrapped in defeatism telling the British public that they can’t do this or that.

“It is pathetic, it’s absolutely pathetic.”

The frontrunner added: “We haven’t even really wanted to come out… That’s the heart of the problem.

“What we’ve been doing is we’ve been creating our own incarcerate, our own prison. The backstop, the customs union and the single market are all basically designed to keep us in.”

But Downing Street rejected the characterisation of Mrs May’s stint as Prime Minister.

Her official spokesperson said: “She strove very hard for three years to deliver on the will of the British people.

“She voted three times to deliver Brexit, but she was unable to get sufficient support in the House of Commons.”

GATT ‘PLAN B’

The blast at the current Prime Minister came as Mr Johnson said his controversial proposal to try and rely on a section of World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules – known as GATT 24 – to ensure free imports and exports with the bloc carry on under a no-deal Brexit would only amount to a “Plan B”.

The frontrunner has been criticised by a string of Cabinet ministers for insisting that smooth trade can continue even if Britain leaves the bloc without a deal.

Mr Johnson said his first preference would be to “get rid of this current Withdrawal Agreement and get the best bits in it” through Parliament.

But he said: “Plan B is to get a standstill, the agreement GATT 24 paragraph 5B type agreement.

“If the EU won’t do that and we have to come out on WTO terms then Plan C would be to get ready for that outcome.

“And obviously we’re going to do that and it’s very, very important that we do.

“And the British people have had enough of being told that they’re incapable of getting ready to do this.”

An Istanbul Mayoral Election Is Rattling Turkey’s Politics

A mayoral election in Istanbul has delivered a big victory for Turkey’s democracy — and a stunning setback to Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, According to Vox.com.

On Sunday, voters in Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city, picked their next mayor, Ekrem İmamoğlu. For the second time this year.

This was a do-over of a previous election, held in March. İmamoğlu is a member of the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), and in that March race, he defeated former Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım, an ally of President Erdoğan and his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).

İmamoğlu’s March victory was a big deal. Istanbul is Erdoğan’s home turf. He served as mayor of Istanbul in the 1990s, a position that brought him to national prominence. The city has long been a base of support for him and his party.

Erdoğan has also increasingly consolidated his power since becoming president in 2014, turning Turkey from a democracy into an increasingly authoritarian state that answers to him and the AKP.

So İmamoğlu’s victory, as a member of the opposition, was nothing short of shocking.

But that win was somewhat short-lived. Almost immediately, Erdoğan’s party demanded a full recount of the votes, with AKP officials alleging the vote was “tainted.”

The recount still showed İmamoğlu winning, and he was eventually sworn in as mayor. But the AKP applied for a do-over with the election commission, which the commission granted, invalidating the opposition party’s win in Istanbul based on what was described as irregularities in voting. İmamoğlu served about 17 days as mayor before he was kicked out of office and forced to stand for reelection again.

A redo of the race was scheduled for June 23. İmamoğlu defeated Erdoğan’s ally again — this time by nearly 800,000 votes. It was an incredible margin, almost 60 times greater than in March.

İmamoğlu’s second and even more decisive victory is a defeat for Erdoğan and a rebuke of the president in the city that built his political fame.

“His footprints in Turkish politics started with this Istanbul mayorship; losing that is huge, both politically and symbolically,” Sibel Oktay, an assistant professor political science at the University of Illinois Springfield, told me.

How an opposition candidate won Istanbul’s mayoral election a second time
İmamoğlu’s impending win was evident shortly after the results started coming in. Yıldırım conceded, and Erdoğan congratulated İmamoğlu on his victory.

It was a sign that the AKP’s gambit to undo the March election didn’t just fail, but failed spectacularly.

Soner Çağaptay, director of the Turkish research program at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy and author of a recent biography on Erdoğan, told me that Erdoğan has long cast himself as the champion of the underdog — and by canceling and redoing the election, he unwittingly thrust İmamoğlu into that role.

“İmamoğlu has become the new Erdoğan,” Çağaptay said, “the underdog with whom Turkish voters love to identify.”

İmamoğlu also framed his campaign as a fight for Turkish democracy. He did so in March, but it was particularly potent campaign message in June, when he stood for his second election. He also pitched himself as a contrast to Erodğan, whose brand of paranoid, populist politics is designed to polarize and pit different groups against each other.

Instead, İmamoğlu ran a more inclusive campaign, urging unity rather than exploiting differences. When he won the election, he said his victory was “opening up a new page in Istanbul.”

“On this new page, there will be justice, equality, love,” he said, according to the BBC.

But this Istanbul election also needs to be viewed against the backdrop of Turkey’s economic crisis. Erdoğan and his AKP presided over strong economic growth in the previous decade, when the Turkish president pursued growth at all costs; it involved a lot of borrowing and spending, including on infrastructure and massive construction projects. Now Turkey is faced with a lot of debt that’s spooked investors and fueled this economic tailspin.

This is especially acute in Istanbul, one of the country’s financial hubs. It also didn’t help that İmamoğlu’s stint of a little more than two weeks in office helped expose wasteful spending in government under the leadership of the AKP.

Documents also revealed that millions of dollars from Istanbul’s budget had gone to foundations with ties to Erdoğan and his family — which makes it look as if Erdoğan was benefiting as the rest of the city and country were facing an economic tailspin.

“That phenomenal economic growth is no longer there, and that’s Erdoğan’s bright side,” Çağaptay told me. That’s also helped expose and test the limits of his darker side — specifically, his polarizing politics. People are starting to be turned off by it, and Çağaptay said, “Those who were buying into it are not buying into anymore because the economy is not doing so well.”

What does this mean for Turkish democracy?
Erdoğan has held power in Turkey for 16 years. He first served as the country’s prime minister and then won the presidency in 2014. He is unlikely to relinquish his influence anytime soon, as he’s crushed dissent in the media, which included jailing hundreds of journalists and shuttering dozens of independent media outlets. He’s purged the civil service, military, and judiciary of his perceived enemies, with arrests totaling in the tens of thousands. He’s also bent the law to his will, altered the constitution to give himself broad authorities, and consolidated power in the executive branch.

Erdoğan, then, doesn’t like to lose. But he did — and it’s offered reason to be hopeful about Turkish democracy and revealed that there may be limits to Erdoğan’s drive to power.

Other major cities, including Ankara, the capital, are now also under the control of opposition parties. Istanbul, as Turkey’s biggest city and Erdoğan’s old stronghold, is the most significant of these. And experts told me it’s likely that İmamoğlu had to win support from traditional AKP voters to win the Istanbul election with 54 percent of the vote.

But this is probably not Erdoğan’s political obituary, either. Oktay said just Istanbul’s election and the expected transition of power doesn’t mean there won’t be repercussions to Erdoğan’s defeat. “We don’t know if [İmamoğlu] will be given the mandate, and we don’t know how long he can keep it because Erdoğan’s shadow looms large,” she said.

Erdoğan can still frustrate governance in Istanbul, as the city is still largely dependent on the centralized government for a chunk of its funding. The Istanbul city council is still controlled by Erdoğan’s AKP.

Yet there’s reason for cautious optimism. Istanbul resisted Erdoğan’s attempts to reengineer an election outcome he didn’t like. At the very least, it shows democracy is not yet defeated in Turkey — and there may be limits to Erdoğan’s drive to power. “It also takes a long time to kill democracies,” Çağaptay said. “This is the case for Turkey.”

Italian ‘Cocaine King’ Makes Daring Nighttime Rooftop Escape

An Italian mob boss, who had been imprisoned in Uruguay since 2017, escaped from jail overnight as he was waiting to be extradited back to Italy, the South American country’s interior ministry said on Monday, According to Globalnews.ca.

Rocco Morabito had been the most wanted fugitive member of the Calabrian ‘Ndrangheta, Italy’s most powerful organized crime group and one of Europe’s biggest importers of South American cocaine.

Dubbed the “cocaine king of Milan,” the 52-year-old Morabito had been arrested after more than two decades on the run from convictions for Mafia association, drug trafficking and other serious crimes.

Uruguay’s interior ministry said in a statement that Morabito and three others had escaped late at night through the roof of the former Carcel Central prison – now called a national rehabilitation center – onto an adjoining building.

“It is disconcerting and serious that a criminal like Rocco Morabito, boss of the ‘Ndrangheta, managed to escape from a jail in Uruguay while he was waiting to be extradited to Italy,” Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said.

“I make two commitments, First: to shed light on evasion procedures, asking for immediate explanations from the Montevideo government. Second: we will continue to hunt down Morabito, wherever he is, to throw him in jail as he deserves.”
