Come up with policy in response to decent work, social protection challenges, G20 tasks labour ministers

labour ministers, Ngige NSITF

Leaders of the G20 countries have charged their labour ministers to come up with policy that would adequately respond to the challenges of decent work and social protection.

Besides, they have expressed commitment to an inclusive society that boosts the participation of women, youth and people with disabilities.

They asked their labour ministers, who will meet in Matsuyama in September, to foster adequate policy responses to the challenges to decent work and social protection created by new forms of work, particularly those driven by technological innovation.

PDP moves to investigate secret ballot desecrates democracy ― Oshiomhole

ILO Director-General, Guy Ryder said that, “the G20’s focus on achieving labour market inclusion during this time of rapid change within the world of work is encouraging, and sets the right course for policies that support equitable, sustainable policies that support decent work.”

He said that the leaders’ communiqué, “compliments the Centenary Declaration on the Future of Work, that was adopted by the ILO’s member states only a few days ago.”

While new forms of work create opportunities for job creation, the leaders asked their ministers to exchange good practices that will help generate policy options that support both decent work and social protection.

The communiqué also restated the leaders’ commitment to promoting decent work and eradicating child labour, forced labour, human trafficking and modern slavery, including in global supply chains.

The communiqué stressed that gender equality and women’s economic empowerment are key drivers of sustainable and inclusive growth.

The leaders noted the report of the ILO and OECD, Women at Work in G20 Countries, on progress made in reaching the Brisbane Goal to reduce the gender labour force participation gap by 25 per cent by 2025, and committed to accelerating their efforts and to evaluating progress on the basis of the annual ILO/OECD report.

The leaders highlighted the burden of unpaid care work, borne disproportionately by women, and condemned violence, abuse and harassment against women at work.

The courts’ annual long vacation

Tribune Online
The courts’ annual long vacation

vacation , criminal justice law, Zamfara

Fellow Nigerians, please permit me to do a little house cleaning, through this medium, this week. I will like to talk to the Honourable Judges of the Bench and my learned gentlemen of the Bar. I do hope that I have your consent in this regard, which I have already appropriated, even without your input! Never mind, it is just an internal memorandum to the Bench and Bar. Now, let us proceed.

All over the country, superior courts of record, from the High Court to the Supreme Court, will embark on their annual long vacation, starting from July to September or August to October, as the case may be. This is covered by most rules of the courts, that of Lagos State being Order 49 Rule 4(d), which defines “… the long vacation being the period beginning by the middle of July and ending on a day not later than 42 working days as the chief judge may by notification in a public notice appoint.” Although most judges will be on official vacation, some courts will still remain open to attend to very urgent cases, especially criminal cases that may involve custody. I don’t want this year’s vacation to be the usual annual ritual of formal absence from duty, which is the reason for this piece.

AFCON 2019: Buhari shocked over Super Eagles unpaid allowances, Lalong says

The judges

They are human beings with flesh and blood, they need sleep as the rest of us do, they go to the market, they wash their clothes, they have families to attend to and some still have children in school to cater for. But they have to sit in court everyday, from 9.00 a.m. to about 4.00 p.m. daily, some of them writing in long hand. Let me use Lagos State where I practice as a case study. I know of a judge who became sick only by reason of not experiencing sunlight, having to leave home so early to beat traffic, go into court and sit on cases all day, and then close very late, by which time the sun would have set already. I do not want to go into personal details, but the truth is that a lot of the judges nurse varying degrees of ailments, on account of the hazardous nature of their job, sitting in one position all day, all week and for months on end. Reading and studying volumes of records and addresses, analysing cases and preparing and delivering rulings and judgments on them all. So, the long vacation has been built into the courts’ calendar to give room for rest.

For the Judges, it should not just be about rest and fun, but also personal introspection. How have we fared so far? Are we just delivering judgments without justice? Has it just been all of technicalities bereft of substance? Have we now improved the law more than we met it? What is the efficiency score card? And the utility value of the efforts? My Lords must take stock and be self-accountable. We must improve ourselves to improve public perception, which is presently at the lowest ever, though largely instigated and influenced by powers outside the courts for other motives. Can we take part of this time to reflect upon our cases more deeply? Do the judgments that we churn out everyday satisfy the expectations of our people concerning justice? Or are we just working to the answer in satisfaction of NJC returns? In which particular area of law have we made appreciable difference? What innovation have we brought to the judicial table, the whole of this year? My Lords, Bairaman J.S.C. did not cite any authority in the landmark case of Madukolu v Nkemdilim, that has become the bible of jurisdiction, since 1962. Is that the way we want to leave it, just to be quoting and adopting previous decisions, without any substantial impact or improvement?

What about the health factor? Can we take out time to do a comprehensive medical check-up? Since early diagnosis is key to recovery, why not just walk into the lab and check! Judicial work is both mental and physical and very tasking and energy sapping. Can you still cope? In what area can we improve on knowledge? Technology is taking over virtually all aspects of human existence. Are you compliant? Can anything be done in this regard? How can we use technology to improve justice administration? In some courts now, judges direct their registrars to compile a database of all lawyers who have cases in their courts, in order to open effective channels of communication, through emails, whatsapp, etc. What courses are we attending to improve justice delivery? After all these My Lords, please do family, family and family. They are the ones that you have truly, so please use this time to bond with them. Don’t ever leave them behind from those jollification trips this time around. Please create time to bond with your people.

May I also take out time to talk to the heads of the courts? Can we plan our conferences such that they will fall into the long vacation and save litigants and lawyers the trouble of adjournments of cases during busy sessions? This time should also be deployed effectively to renovate the chambers of the judges, to change their carpets, tiles, furniture, computers and other tools of business. Let us make the working environment conducive and friendly. Let us attend to the dilapidated courtrooms, some of which are as hot as the oven, without any ventilation for fresh air. It is most embarrassing that there are no conducive public conveniences in most of the courts. Yet, we bring lawyers and litigants to remain in the court premises for about eight hours without adequate facilities for their welfare. Let the entire court compound be cleaned and fumigated, the lawns and gardens properly dressed and the entire courts repainted to wear a new look for the coming legal year. Afterall, President Muhammadu Buhari has granted financial autonomy to the judiciary to be in charge of its finances, and we have since jerked up the filing fees and penalties, the costs have gone up and probate fees have all become prohibitive. So, why should things still remain the same, when we are paying through our noses? And most courts have no Bar Centre, where lawyers can take peppersoup and sip drinks. Why? Should it all be about legal arguments and dry advocacy?

Added to the above is the issue of welfare packages for judicial officers and judicial staff. You cannot fight corruption with poorly paid people. So, we need to review the salary of judges and the judicial staff. They are just too poor and abysmal. Indeed, beyond the prestige of office (which does not really exist anymore), some judges are suffering, with some worrisome cases of judges driving themselves to work!

The lawyers

Properly speaking, the long vacation is more for the lawyers, who all joggle between different courts, all year round. It is the same lawyer who will appear before the Magistrate’s Court, the High Court, the Federal High Court, the National Industrial Court, Election Petitions Tribunal, Tax Appeal Tribunal, SEC Tribunal, Sharia Court, the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court, round the clock, as all these courts have different times and schedules. But for the long vacation, by July ending, most active lawyers are already fatigued and experiencing decline in productivity. So, what does the lawyer do with the long vacation? Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAN, once told me that in his practice days, he uses the long vacation to read the entire practice books, such as Evidence Act, Rules of Court, Criminal Procedure Laws and such other common practice books and journals that are daily tools in the courtroom. Between now and the time of the Annual Bar Conference, take a course in computer studies, in arbitration, in business or other law related matters.

Then review your cases altogether, to tackle all pending assignments. Take stock of the past one year. How has it been? Beyond the big fat briefs, how many pro bono cases have you attended to? What about the members of staff, are you deliberately owing them arrears of salary and now planning to travel abroad with your family for holiday? Haba! What is the general impact of your practice on society at large? How have you contributed to the anti-corruption crusade? Will you, now in good conscience, stop misleading/extorting your clients in the name of bribing judges, when you don’t even have any communication channel with My Lord at all? Can you get back to making this legal profession truly noble, by practicing it in the best tradition that we inherited from our leaders gone? Can you embrace civility and decorum in the conduct of cases, to be transparently honest and tell your client the true position of the law, so that if he is the wrong party he can make things right, instead of frivolous applications to prolong the case?

Alternative dispute resolution is fast gaining grounds as a veritable means of conflict management and every lawyer should embrace it and commend it to their clients. It is faster, better and even cheaper. And then you must plan for the NBA-AGC along with your colleagues from your office. Forget about the politics, the NBA is indeed a useful organ for all lawyers in many ways and we should endeavour to be part of all activities of the Bar. Having done all these, then now is the long vacation proper. You must shut down completely, away from cases, clients and briefs, even telephones. The body must be allowed to refresh itself. If God who created us could find time to rest, then you have no excuse at all. You don’t have to travel abroad if you cannot afford it or if other priorities would not permit for now. Take madam and children to some secluded places, even in Nigeria here and just have fun, at least for a week or two. I have read cases of lawyers collapsing in court, some in the midst of arguments of cases. Please take a break so that you do not break.

I verily believe that with these few words of mine, I have been able to convince and not confuse my fellow Nigerians, that judges and lawyers deserve the annual long vacation indeed.

UN Watchdog Confirms Iran Has Breached Nuclear Deal Stockpile Limit

The United Nations nuclear watchdog confirmed on Monday that Tehran has broken a stockpile limit for low-enriched uranium allowed under a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, a move that could add to friction with the United States.

Iran’s total stockpile of low-enriched uranium on Monday exceeded the 300-kilogram limit allowed under the deal, International Atomic Energy Agency spokesman Fredrik Dahl said.

His statement followed comments by Iranian officials saying they had breached the limit because Europe has not done enough to mitigate biting US sanctions. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the move was “reversible” but warned that Iran can continue to reduce its commitment to the agreement if Europe does not take necessary action to uphold the other side of the deal, Iran’s official Islamic Republic News Agency reported.

Iran had repeatedly threatened to cross the limit laid out in the deal for its stockpile of low-enriched uranium unless it received some relief from sanctions, arguing that it has been constrained by the accord but unable to reap the benefits of it since the United States pulled out last year.

Lebanon Demolishes Syrian Refugee Homes

Lebanese military units demolished at least 20 refugee homes early on Monday, a group of international aid agencies said, warning that they feared more demolitions would follow and that thousands of people including children could be affected.

The army did not immediately comment on the aid agencies’ statement, but a security source said the military had been carrying out checks to make sure refugee dwellings were sticking to regulations according to Reuters.

Lebanon is toughening its enforcement of rules governing the roughly 1 million Syrian refugees who constitute about a quarter of the tiny country’s population.

The small concrete huts in which many refugees live to break rules against building semi-permanent structures in their informal camps, something some Lebanese fear would lead to their lasting settlement in the country.

Russia Reacts To U.S., Israel’s Strikes On Rival Targets In Syria

Russia has responded to recent U.S. and Israeli strikes that targeted two rival factions in Syria, where all three foreign powers have engaged in separate military campaigns in pursuit of national interests.

In a statement published Monday, U.S. Central Command announced that it targeted Al-Qaeda in Syria’s leadership in strikes the previous day near Aleppo, stating that those targeted were “operatives responsible for plotting external attacks threatening U.S. citizens, our partners, and innocent civilians.” Jihadi groups associated with Al-Qaeda were known to have a presence in northwestern Idlib and surrounding provinces such as Aleppo, and the Pentagon warned that the region “remains a safe haven” for such militants.

The U.S., however, has rarely intervened in this corner of the war-torn country. Rather it was Moscow that often supported Syrian efforts here. Asked if the U.S. strikes could be the result of Friday’s meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Osaka, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that, while he had “no details” on what happened, he could say “there is definitely no connection here,” as the state-run Tass Russian News Agency reported.

Washington and its regional allies actually backed a number of the groups fighting as part of the 2011 rebel and jihadi uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Since 2015, however, the Pentagon has largely focused its efforts on supporting Kurdish fighters against the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) as the jihadis and various militant and rebel groups also faced off with Syrian troops and allied militias, who were targeted overnight as well.

At Least 50 Children Wounded In Taliban Attack On Kabul

At least 50 children were among nearly 100 people wounded Monday when the Taliban detonated a powerful car bomb in an area of Kabul housing military and government buildings, officials said.

The rush-hour blast, which sent a plume of smoke into the air and shook buildings nearly two kilometres (1.2 miles) away, was followed by gunmen storming a building and triggering a gun battle with special forces in the Puli Mahmood Khan neighbourhood of the Afghan capital.

The health ministry said at least one person had been killed and 93 wounded.

Among them were 50 children, the education ministry said in a statement, adding that most had been hurt by flying glass and were in stable condition.

Some social media images purportedly taken at a hospital showed wounded, stunned children in school uniforms, still clutching books as they arrived for treatment.

In its statement, the education ministry said five schools had been partially damaged, and asked “all sides involved in fighting to guarantee the safety of students, teachers, education workers and schools”.

The Taliban claimed the attack, which came just two days after the insurgents began a seventh round of talks with the US in Qatar as Washington eyes a breakthrough before Afghanistan’s September presidential election.

Militant spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said the insurgents had targeted a defence ministry building in the area, which was quickly blocked off by Afghan forces and ambulances, with helicopter gunships seen overhead as gunfire continued.

Authorities have not confirmed the target, but Interior ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi said the area had been cordoned off by special forces who were “bringing down” the attackers, with at least two killed.

“Security forces also rescued 210 civilians from buildings nearby,” he said.

AFP reporters could hear gunshots and multiple smaller explosions as fighting continued nearly seven hours after the first blast.

“We were sitting inside the office when the world turned upside down on us,” Zaher Usman, an employee at a branch of the culture ministry, which he said stands just 150 metres (yards) from the blast.

– Brief lockdown –

“When I opened my eyes, the office was filled with smoke and dust and everything was broken, my colleagues were screaming,” Usman told AFP by telephone.

Shams Amini, a spokesman for the Afghan Football Federation, told AFP that the blast occurred near their HQ gates, and said some colleagues had been injured.

Madagascar Shock Nigeria 2-0 To Top Group B

Lagos – In what looked like an upset, Madagascar defeated Nigeria 2-0 in the last Group B match of the ongoing 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The Madagascan took the lead as early as the 13th minute as a costly defensive error from Leon Balogun gifted Lalaina Nomenjanahary an easy ball that beat Ikechukwu Ezenwa for that curtain raiser.

The wastefulness of the Super Eagles continued as they continued to put every foot wrong in front of Madagascan vital area, with Ahmed Musa missing a sitter in the dying minutes of the first half as he had goalkeeper of Madagascar to beat but chose to dribble and then missed the chance.

Meanwhile, as Nigeria continued to play shy in front of goals, a deflected free kick shot by Wilfred Ndidi in the 56th minute beat Ezenwa for Madagascan second goal of the night.

With the result, Madagascar, who are yet to lose a game in the ongoing AFCON, took their points haul to seven and thus top Group B with that number of points as against Nigeria’s six points.

Consequently, the Super Eagles will like face the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon or the Black Stars of Ghana in the next round. This is according to the fixtures earlier made available by the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF).

According to the fixtures, the runners up of Group B will come up against the runners up of Group F. In Group F, Cameroon lead by four points while Ghana are second with two points, even as Benin Republic are also second on two points.

In their final group game coming up tomorrow, Ghana will come up against one-point Guinea Bissau while Cameroon will play Benin Republic. In the event that Ghana expectedly defeat Guinea Bissau and Cameroon win Benin Republic, the status quo in the group will remain, meaning that Nigeria will face Ghana in the Round of 16.

ITTF: Unseeded Nigerian Conquers African Champion

Lagos – Isau Ogunkunle may not be a familiar name in Africa but the Nigerian has made name for himself at the 2019 Africa PTT Championships in Alexandria, Egypt, when he caused the biggest upset at the tournament after beating an Egyptian 3-2.

Ogunkunle who is competing in Class Four as one of Nigeria’s representatives was set up against his idol – Egypt’s Mohamed Sameh Eid and he knew that for him to prove a point in Africa, he must surmount the world number 11 and Africa’s number one.

As Nigeria’s national champion, Ogunkunle did the impossible in front of the Egyptian fans when he humbled the home hero in the first round of the Class Four singles event.

From the start of the encounter the unseeded Nigerian was full of confidence against the tournament’s number one seed by winning the first game at 11-8.

But Eid had to rely on experience with a lot of topspin from the backhand to win the next two games at 8-11, 6-11.

Having discovered the weakness of his opponent after losing the second and third games,  Ogunkunle decided to play more to the Egyptian forehand and this worked for him as he won the fourth game by 11-2. The final and deciding game went the way of the Nigerian who led from the start to the end to win at 11-7. The excited Nigerian did not hide his joy after the big win when he said, he would be unstoppable having surmounted his biggest challenge in the competition with the victory.

“In 2011 when I first played against Eid, he defeated me 3-0 but after the match he came to me to comfort and encourage me not to give up. Since then we have been friends and we communicate with each other regularly. He became my idol in the game,” Ogunkunle said.

However, the romance for table tennis for Ogunkunle did not come by leisure but by sheer determination to make it big in life. “I was in school in 2005 when I lost my father and it was difficult for me to continue schooling so I dropped out. I decided to embrace shoe-making as a vocation. But it was in 2010 that somebody who came to patronize me invited me to table tennis hall and that was how I started playing table tennis,” the Nigerian said.

50-Km Remo Ultra Road Race In Sagamu For December 7

Lagos – Come December 7, distance runners from all over the African continent will converge in the ancient town of Sagamu for the maiden edition of the 50-kilometre Remo Ultra Road Race. This, according to Bukola Olapade, former Ogun State Commissioner for Sports, is the first time “we are having an African race on ultra-basis.

In a press conference in Sagamu, Ogun State, on Saturday to herald the preparations towards the event, Olapade noted that formalities had been put in place to make the event a huge success.

Speaking to DAILY INDEPENDENT, Yusuf Ali, former national record holder for long jump, who is one of the technical team members for the race, the Remo Ultra Road Race would start at the Gateway Stadium in Remo, Sagamu, and terminate at the stadium.

“It is like a ring; it will start at the stadium and also end at the stadium. It will commence at the stadium, then through the second gate to Okadigbo Junction near the church,” he said.

The former athlete said that all together, the distance would be five kilometres and the athletes are expected to run round it and back to the stadium 10 times, thus making it 50 kilometres.

He revealed that this is the first time road race in Nigeria would be attracting prize money, explaining that the winner would smile home with a sum of $5,000 while the first runners up will take home $3,000 while the second runners up will earn the sum of $1,000.

Also speaking, Solomon Ogba, thanked the organisers of the race, Value Jet, for the project, saying that road race had come to stay in Nigeria, noting that the Remo Ultra-Race would showcase the beauty of the host communities.

Norrie Williams, a South African and head of the technical team, said logistics have been put on ground to make Remo Ultra Road Race a highly successful one.

Fed Cup 2019: Rivers Utd, Pillars Through To Semis

Lagos – Unheralded goalkeeper, Darlington Ovunda was the unlikely hero for Rivers United as the ‘Pride of Rivers’ defeated Lobi Stars 5-3 on penalty shoot outs to reach the semifinals of Nigeria’s oldest  football competition, the Federation Cup.

Ovunda saved once and converted the decisive kick in the shootout as United put themselves within striking distance of the showpiece game.

The quarter final decided at the Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu-Ode was one of few clear cut goal scoring opportunities so it was unsurprising that the stand out moment in regulation time was an extraordinary save by United goalkeeper, Abiodun Akande to keep out Kadiri Timileyin’s goal bound effort in the 79th minute.

In another quarterfinal match played, Kano Pillars bashed Aklosendi FC 4-0 to reach the semifinal while Calabar Rovers edged out Bendel Insurance 5-4 on penalty kicks after the match ended goalless at regulation time.

Niger Tornadoes on the other hand also went through the penalty kicks to send out Lagos State champions, Smart City FC.

The match had ended goalless but Tornadoes triumphed penalty kicks 5-4 to book their semifinal match.

While Kano Pillars will engage Calabar Rovers, Rivers United of Port Harcourt will now meet Niger Tornadoes in the last four of the competition.

South Africa Face Uphill Task In Morocco

South Africa kept their hopes alive of progressing to theknockout stages of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations with a slender victory overNamibia and must now look for a positive result against Morocco. With sixpoints in two matches, Morocco will be a hard nut to crack for the formerapartheid enclave.

The South Africans had the better chances throughout thegame against Namibia and created a lot more in front of goal than theiropponents but it took them until the 68th minutes to finally breakthe deadlock when Bongani Zungu found the back of the net.

That win places South Africa on three points after they losttheir opening game to Ivory Coast but a win over already-qualified Moroccowould see them progress and they will be hoping to have midfielder Dean Furmanback after he missed out against Namibia due to a knock to his knee.

Morocco secured a vital victory in their pivotal clash withGroup D rivals Ivory Coast as they did enough to narrowly defeat them andsecure their spot in the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations.

In a closely-fought game, both teams were evenly matched forlong periods but Morocco’s Youssef En-Nesyri scored the only goal of the gameafter some good work in the build-up from Nordin Amrabat.

Morocco may look to give some of their fringe players somegame time for this final game but will be wary that they could still end up aslow as third place despite already qualifying for the knockout stages.

Morocco have already secured their spot in the last 16 ofthe Africa Cup of Nations and South Africa will be hoping to join them but needa positive result against them here.

They must improve on their first two efforts against theMoroccans or face an early exit but may be boosted by Morocco opting to rotatetheir side. However, those players who potentially come into the side will havea point to prove and they can help their country maintain their perfect recordin the group stage.

Guard, Receivers In Police Net For Allegedly Stealing Employer’s 21 Bags Of Cement

The operatives of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad(RRS), a unit of the Lagos Police Command have arrested a receiver of stolen construction materials from site workers in Lekki area of Lagos.

The suspect, Hassan Abubakar,32, was arrested while driving a white pick-up van with a registration number KRD-474BQ loaded with 21 bags of cement at about 5:30 a.m on Saturday by RRS officers on patrol of the area.

Hassan, when quizzed on how he got the 21 bags of cement lied he was a haulage driver contracted by a civil engineer working in MTN Estate in Lekki Phase 2 to help him convey the bags of cement from one construction site to another.

The officers who were not satisfied with his explanation insisted Hassan called the Site Manager to buttress his point and on sensing that the game was up, he stopped responding to further enquiries put to him by the officers.

Not convinced by the excuse, Hassan and the exhibits were handed over to the Decoy Team of the RRS where investigations revealed that the suspect, in collusion with a site guard bought the stolen 21 bags cement at a construction site in Lekki.

The security guard, Adamu Ibrahim, 43 disclosed to the police that he stole the 21 bags of cement from the construction site, and that the owner of the site was based in the United States.

Adamu further revealed to the police that the owner of the site engaged him as a guard and also allow him to live there and oversee all transactions at the site.

He added that he had been selling the materials meant for construction on the site to Hassan.

Adamu stated in his confessional statement that he began selling the site construction materials immediately his boss travelled out of the country.

He added that his boss defaulted in paying his N25,000 salary for about three months and in order to discharge his family obligations, he had to raise money by selling the construction materials.

“I Have spent all my little savings in buying cloth materials for my wife during the Eid Fitri festival, so I am broke and I needed money to feed my family which pushed me into selling the 21 bags of cement to Hassan who I know used to buy stolen site materials in the area at the rate of N1, 500 per bag on credit while he promised to pay me N31, 500 by noon.

“I invited Hassan to come and inspect the cement and he agreed to come and convey them in the early hours of the next day. In the morning, he came alongside one Bukari Muhammad around 4:30 a.m and loaded the cement into his pick-up van and drove off.

“My boss is owing me N75, 000 as salary arrears, I thought selling the cement won’t be a bad idea so also to prevent them from getting spoilt,” he added.

Elkana, said the suspects have been transferred to the State  Criminal Investigative department (SCID), Panti for further investigation

Amnesty Beneficiaries To Use 23 NAFDAC Technology Incubation Centres For Food Production

NAFDAC

Beneficiaries of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) are set to use 23 technology incubation centres of the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to boost food production.

This is coming as PAP partners with the National Board for Technology Incubation (NBTI) to improve the quality and certification of agricultural and other products of its beneficiaries trained and empowered in the agriculture and allied sector.

Towards this end, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator, Amnesty Programme and the NBTI will be signed on Tuesday in Abuja.

A statement issued by Murphy Ganagana, Special Assistant (Media) to the PAP Coordinator, Prof. Charles Dokubo said this followed an approval granted the Programme by the Director General, National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, to use 23 technology incubation centres allocated to it by the NBTI for cluster manufacturing by  beneficiaries of the Programme.

The centres will be used by beneficiaries of the Programme trained and empowered in the agricultural sector to produce their products for the purpose of obtaining NAFDAC registration numbers with a view to enhancing quality and acceptability of products in the market.

Beneficiaries, who are trained on production of rice, garri, plantain-flour, plantain-chips, chin-chin, smoked fish, chicken, snail, fruit juice and cosmetics, among others, will benefit from the partnership.

The 23 NBTI technology incubation centres approved for the programme to be used by the beneficiaries are located in Edo, Abia, Imo, Ondo, Rivers, Cross Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa and Delta states.

Apart from the MoU with the NBTI, the Amnesty Programme Small Business Support Desk, an initiative of the Coordinator of the Programme, Prof. Charles Dokubo, is to ensure that all graduates of the programme vocational training centres trained on production of NAFDAC regulated products are registered for safety, efficacy, distribution and sale of their products.

The Small Business Support Desk headed by a deputy director, Mrs. Edotimi Preye Olive, is to foster greater understanding of NAFDAC registration procedures and also serve as a point of enquiry for clients on regulatory issues and assist in conducting Good Manufacturing Practice Inspection of Factories (GMPIF) to ensure that products are produced in accordance with international standards.

Coordinator of the Amnesty Programme, Prof. Charles Dokubo, had assured of his readiness to partner on technology incubation especially in the area of food production, when the management of the NBTI led by the Director-General, Dr Mohammed Jubrin, visited him  in his office.

Dokubo said, “I think there is a necessity for us to work together to make sure that we can get those certifications that will enable people to consume what we produce, so that they will not create any harm for those who eat our products.

“I think there is a need for synergy between us because we do farming. I believe that if we go through the documents and understand everything, we will sit to have an MOU so that we can work directly with you.

“Then, we will know all that it takes to set up other centres in the Niger Delta as most of the things we do will equally go to those centres to be accessed and evaluated to know if they are edible,” he said..

Jubrin had also promised to quickly articulate a proposal for an MoU between the two agencies that will lead to quality food processing, production and manufacturing businesses.

Group charges U.S. on Nigerian politicians heating up polity

The Democracy Vanguard of Nigerians in Diaspora has urged  the United States to revoke visa of Nigerian politicians who heat up the polity with inciting statements.

Mr Timothy Sule, President of the vanguard made the call in a letter to the U.S Ambassador to Nigeria, Amb. Stuart Symington on Sunday in Abuja.

The vanguard is a non-governmental organisation involved in global network for the protection of democratic processes around the world, especially on the Africa continent.

He said he was constrained to write to the ambassador to draw his attention to threats posed to Nigeria’s hard earned democracy by utterances of such politicians, especially as it related to the 2019 general elections.

Sule, while appealing to the U.S. to help save Nigeria’s democracy from disintegration and manipulation, said such political actors and their families should be banned from entering the U.S.

He specifically appealed that the U.S should carry out comprehensive independent assessment and investigation of Nigeria’s electioneering processes ahead of the 2019 general elections.

This, he said, should include pre- and post-election anti-democratic behaviour of some political actors, with a view to sanctioning those found guilty.

Sule advised that these culpable individuals and their families should be banned from entering the United States, while their visas should be revoked over their anti-democratic utterances and inciting statements.

“We pray these prayers believing in the United States of America’s avowed commitment to the sanctity of all electoral processes and the protection of democratic norms around the world.

“We anticipate a favorable response from your very important office. We are willing to partner with the State Department where applicable, to help realise the above prayers,” he said.

The vanguard president added that punitive actions taken against such persons now would serve as a deterrent against future occurrence.

He advised that the judiciary should be objective as judges currently review
election petition and other court matters. (NAN)
