ENUGU – Osita Okechukwu, the Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON) and chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) has mocked the Peopleâ€s Democratic Party (PDP) for spending almost half a billion naira, just to launder the image of its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
Okechukwu said such a whooping expenditure once more clearly shows that the leading opposition party, PDPâ€s unforced error in the choice of Atiku Abubakar, as its presidential flag bearer for the 2019 general elections.
“The unforced error of choosing Atiku is manifesting already as PDP has to engage in capital flight out of Nigeria, in an effort to launder the image of their candidate in the United States of America, the VON DG said in a statement on Sunday.
Okechukwu spoke against the backdrop of media reports that PDP signed a N400 million contract with a United States lobbyists, Brian Ballard, for Atiku.
He chided the PDP for paying N400 million to a United States lobbyist, a payment that could have been avoidable, if the party did not engage in Bureau de Change presidential primary.
He raised a poser: “Is it politically correct to dole out N400m, whereas internally displaced persons are languishing in Adamawa State, the home of Atiku Abubakar, need assistance?
Okechukwu equally frowned at Atikuâ€s very expensive strategic meeting at Dubai, United Arab Emirates with a large contingent of PDP chieftains and hangers on.
He said for Atiku to spend such a whooping fee on a Donald Trump lobbyist clearly shows that there are still lingering issues about his immigration status in the United States.
“Am in league with some PDP governors who frowned at Atikuâ€s cash-and-carry Port Harcourt victory, as it will be very difficult and expensive to clean up the mess our elder statesman and ex-president, Olusegun Obasanjo, splashed on him in the global arena,â€ he said.
On the fact that Obasanjo has publicly pardoned Atiku, Okechukwu said that it is only Nigerians who can pardon anyone whose hand allegedly is deep in the cookie jar not someone who is also allegedly more or less culpable.
“If Atiku should embark on such an expensive lobby and expensive trip to Dubai to hold strategic meeting, it means that if he becomes President, Nigeriaâ€s treasury will be in red, as he may be holding Shadow Federal Executive Council (FEC) meetings in Dubai, hence putting Buhariâ€s RRAP Projects in harms†way.
“For me, choosing between Buhari and Atiku is akin to choosing between transparency and less than transparency. President Muhammadu Buhari has started putting Nigeria on the path to economic growth and development. Buhari has embarked on Road, Rail, Agriculture and Power (RRAP) projects, which full project circle will be the next four years.
“It is on record that he is building 5,000-kilometers of federal road, 5,000-kilometers of Standard Gauge Rail lines and additional 5,000 megawatts of electricity. RRAP Projects will definitely move Nigeria towards self-sufficiency in food production. He needs a second tenure to conclude these projects and fully position Nigeria on the path of growth.
“Nigerians should not be deceived by PDP and Atiku -One Chance Bus. They promise restructuring in six months in office. This is pontificating and grandstanding; as restructuring cannot be done with Fiat-Executive-Order. Any restructuring must adhere to Section 9 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. No short-cut to the amendment of the rigid constitution.
“Methinks that the choice of Atiku was an unforced error, as their pledges, actions and mannerisms show that their ulterior intendment is to come back and continue 16 years of squander-mania (1999-2015). Nigerians must rise up and vote for Buhari, Okechukwu said.
