Buhari Has Failed, Cannot Solve Nigeria’s Problems – Prof. Soyinka Blows Hot

Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, has insisted that the President Muhammadu Buhari administration has failed.

According to him, the problems confronting Nigeria were beyond Buhari.

Soyinka stated this while playing host to students who paid him a visit on his 85th birthday.

The literary icon made it clear that while state governments differ in success rates, “central government has failed”.

“The problems of this nation are beyond the solution that can be offered by this government, that’s the first admission; they have to stop thinking in partisan government.

“There has always been a major…

Deregistration Of Political Parties Not Solution To Nigeria’s Electoral Problems – Agoro

Dr. Olapade Agoro is the National Chairman and former Presidential Candidate of National Action Council (NAC). In this interview with Gbenga Faturoti, he speaks on his expectations from President Muhammadu Buhari, godfatherism in politics and other issues. Excerpts:

What are the expectations of Nigerians in this second term of Buhari administration?

President Muhammadu Buhari having seriously but not copiously committed himself to any policy direction to be followed in his second term, one will only be talking to one self in ‘guess work limbo play’ particularly with his inability so far to name his core cabinet over six weeks of coming to office. Therefore it will be very difficult for Nigerians to expect from him what he does not promise to offer. Problems currently confronting Nigeria are mirage and with each day new ones like the ‘RUGA’ controversy emerging with surprise on the horizon. Naturally one would have expected Mr. President with four years past experience already in his kitty to have known those he would have loved to work with to good success in his second term but the turn of event is sadly the case. This is not good enough for planning and developmental articulation in a large country of roughly 180 million people. Obvious of the fact that there are just too many available egg heads all over the country to choose from without loss of sleep, delaying such as now being experienced is an ominous signal of week and or bad leadership.

Godfatherism has continued to pose threat to the nation’s polity, how can the menace be eradicated?

Godfatherism in politics is an unexpected evil demeanour characteristic of foul play, forceful decision making enforcement and skewed mind enforced slave holder idea in human affairs. In the altruistic sense that there is only One God to be trusted in man to man affairs but as wrongly termed, it becomes evil when for dominance purpose the element makes in-road into political management. Nothing is wrong when a junior becomes a tutelage pupil under a superior for the purpose of leaning and experience gaining. However it becomes evil when the senior somewhere in the process turns himself to a tin god whose order must be obeyed with attendant reverberating ugly scenario. Politics is a methodological form of government of imposed learning process within principled system. The learning system can be through seeing and learning from field examples and or philosophical ideas inculcation, enablement and entrenchment. Unfortunately in most of Nigeria’s type of ‘godfatherism’ there is a silently laid out inadequate structure of Masters and Followers style of dogmatic slavery without ideology. We had this type of master and slave dictatorship system of ‘his voice must be obeyed’ some years past in Anambra State and lately in Lagos state. They indeed carry offensive odium to man and God.

Do you think Nigeria needs two party systems as suggested by Chief Olusegun Osoba in his recent interview?

The statement by once highly respected Chief Olusegun Osoba suggesting that Nigeria needs two party system is rather an horrendous capitulation to the abyss political horror. Surprisingly Chief Olusegun Osoba did not raise the issue of Two Party System up during the time and when he willingly submitted himself to actively participate twice in multi-party system of elections and when he won brazenly to become Ogun State Governor. He raised too many contestable issues forcing one to see him rather as an Half Truth Story Teller. It becomes pertinent to ask that if Segun Osoba was an adherent believer in ‘Two Party Political’ system, why did he not follow up his ideas with action and determination?. The fact no one can deny Osoba is that he was a national leader in the practice of journalism but a brutal failure in management of man and materials. If challenged, one will be forced to open up on him and his techno trade using the ‘pen to push and bargain’ Although he volunteered to be challenged with a written statement that “I want people to react to my book and I want anyone who is going to react to counter the things said with documents” I will like double-faced agent Olusegun Osoba to note that “People in glass house do not throw stones” I will like to point out that I have no kobo to pay to buy just a copy of Olusegun Osoba’s book of half-truth exudation. If he knew that a lot of the half-truth he rolled out to please himself and carelessly hurt some others, he would have been a little bit more careful. If he knew that I in particular played a selfless Nigeria cause benefitting role and without collecting a kobo on the prompting of that great Nigerian Rtd. Gen Donaldson Oladipo Diya and which swayed the opinion of Western World from imposing damaging and punitive sanctions on Nigeria; If he knew that I on my own went to Canada where I met with Canadian Deputy Foreign Office Minister who advised me to quickly go to the USA to meet with Chief Anthony Enahoro and Prof. Wole Soyinka who by the time I got to the UK had gone to South Africa, and from there in the UK I met with Chief Wale Oshun and Chief John Oyegun at a London Road barbeque and thereafter later addressed the World through the BBC on the cause of Nigeria’s problems. Chief Segun Osoba would have probably reduced his self-evasion to the barest minimum. Lastly it hurts the cause of truth perfection when Chief Olusegun Osoba failed in his ‘two Party system’ to mention those two parties of his preference. Possibly, he meant to suggest the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The fact he failed to address is that of evil and bad money in politics. To him and all right thinking Nigerians, I beg to mention that the current ugly “Bad Money In Politics” that characterised elections 2015 and 2019 if anything else, are abrasions of truth and decency in the political affairs and human management.

Should we continue with this multiparty system with its attendant problems?

The issue of Nigeria’s current practice of multiparty system is an imposed constitutional matter brought about by order of court judgment against political party deregistration by INEC. Nigeria is a large political nation of about 180 million with 93 most newly registered political parties in need of foundational and structural stability. It becomes apt to mention that before a political party can have reasonable followings and solid base structure, surely it would take that type of political party some years of efforts laying. But in the type of Nigeria situation that revels in endemic corruption and within an environment over laid in poverty rough edges, the people’s idea is expectation of money dropping down from the sky from anybody claiming to be a politician. In Nigeria political terrain, politics is money whilst monetary language in politics commands people’s attention and respect. The political ideology of an average Nigerian political party is basically money. Money wins votes and the more money the better, merrier for large vote catching This now reasonably explains why the newly registered parties with no show yet on ground and or with not yet solid base, must be assisted and nurtured to grow and develop for the political development of this nation. Deregistering political parties that failed to win seats in any of past elections may not be the answer to the attendant socio-economic problems since the reality of the actual situation and what obtained on ground shall be found in the fact that those that won did not win squarely, honestly, credibly and fairly. The nation in the sense that no political party gets founded by the government should allow the political space to self stabilise, normalise and grow to appreciable level.

Indonesia President Pledges More Infrastructure, Investment In Second Term

Scientist In Mexico Creates Biodegradable Plastic From Prickly Pear Cactus

Researchers from the University of Valle de Atemajac in Zapopan, Mexico have created a biodegradable plastic from the juice of the prickly pear cactus.

The new material begins to break down after sitting in the soil for a month and when left in water, it breaks down in a matter of days. Plus, it doesn’t require crude oil like traditional plastics.

“There were some publications that spoke of different materials with which biodegradable plastics could be made, including some plants,” Sandra Pascoe Ortiz, the research professor who developed the material, told Forbes.

“In this case the nopal cactus has certain chemical characteristics with which I thought it could be feasible to obtain a polymer, that if it was combined with some other substances, all of them natural, a non-toxic biodegradable plastic would be obtained. The process is a mixture of compounds whose base is the nopal. It’s totally non-toxic, all the materials we use could be ingested both by animals or humans and they wouldn’t cause any harm.”

This means that even if any of this material made its way into the ocean, it will safely dissolve. It’s estimated that between 1.15 million to 2.41 million tonnes of plastic are entering the ocean each year from rivers. Last month, divers found a plastic KFC bag from the 1970sduring an ocean clean-up off the waters off Bulcock Beach in Queensland, Australia and earlier this year, during a dive to the bottom of the Mariana Trench – the deepest point in the ocean – a plastic bag was found.

According to Ortiz, the project was born in a science Fair of the Department of Exact Sciences and Engineering, in the chemistry class with industrial engineering students of the career. They began to make some attempts to obtain a plastic using cactus as raw material.

“From that I decided to start a research project in a formal way. Currently in the project collaborate researchers from the University of Guadalajara in conjunction with the University of Valle de Atemajac.”

Currently, the process is still limited to the lab, but Ortiz believes it could be sped up enough to compete with conventional plastic if her operation is scaled up and moved to an industrial facility. “At this moment some tests of applications are being made, what is needed is to carry out the necessary tests in the possible applications and to go from the process in the laboratory to an industrial process.”

A number of companies have already expressed an interest and Ortiz says they are collaborating with the research to find a way to make this a large scale operation.

“I believe that it is never too late to start changing things,” Ortiz says. “Every day there is a new opportunity to do things better, so if we each do what we have to do, there is another opportunity to reverse all the damage we have done to the planet.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Heads to New York For UN Conference: IRNA

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif traveled to New York on Saturday to a United Nations conference, Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported, amid rising tension between Washington and Tehran.

The United States and Iran are at loggerheads over Tehran’s nuclear program and Washington has blamed Iranian forces for attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf region, a charge Tehran denies.

The two nations came close to conflict last month when Iran shot down a US drone, prompting Washington to order retaliatory air strikes that were called off at the last minute.

Zarif will attend a meeting of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in New York and would then travel to Venezuela, Bolivia and Nicaragua, IRNA reported.

Lebanon’s Hezbollah has cut down its forces in Syria as fighting died down though it still has fighters all over the country,…

US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in June that Washington would impose sanctions on top Iranian officials, including Zarif, a step that could have impeded any diplomatic efforts to resolve their disagreements.

But two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Thursday the United States had decided not to impose sanctions on Zarif for now, in a sign that Washington might be holding a door open for diplomacy.

President Donald Trump withdrew the United States last year from a 2015 accord between Iran and world powers that had aimed to curb Tehran’s nuclear program.

Washington has ratcheted up sanctions on Iran since then, driving Iranian oil exports sharply lower.

Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood: A Change Toward Democracy?

For the first time since the ousting of Egypt’s late Islamist President Mohammed Morsi in 2013, the Muslim Brotherhood announced that it would no longer seek to claim power should the regime of current President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi fall. In a very controversial statement, the organization announced that it will stop any political activity in the country and allow its members to engage in political action through other parties.

The organization’s statement, published on its official website June 29, revealed the brotherhood’s new strategy in the coming period, based on coordination with leftist and liberal political forces inside Egypt, in a bid to free prisoners of conscience and overthrow Sisi’s regime. This sparked controversy given the group’s history and its views on democracy as an alien system from the West.

“We believe the overall political workspace on national issues — the public rights of the Egyptian people, the nation’s overall issue — constitutes a wider arena for the Brotherhood’s activities than the narrow party action and competition for power. At some stage, after the end of the military coup [led by Sisi on Brotherhood rule in 2013], we will act as a general national movement with an Islamic background, supporting the nation and practicing political life in its general framework,” the statement read.

The group admitted it “made mistakes during its time of rule.” The statement continued, “We conducted several internal reviews and underlined the mistakes we made during the revolution period and when in power. We also reviewed the mistakes by allies and competitors from the revolution’s components. These errors and disagreements gave leeway to the counter-revolution to take over.”

Islamist leader Murad Ghorab an Islamist leader in Egypt who has been a fugitive in Turkey since 2014, told Al-Monitor the “Muslim Brotherhood is trying to rebuild trust with the different Egyptian political parties [and] to join hands against the Sisi regime after years of repression.”

“The group’s leaders believe dissolving the Brotherhood, integrating its members within different political parties, and collaborating with leftists and liberals is more important at this stage than clinging to power,” Ghorab said.

“We say to all political movements and parties that we are now more open than ever. We do not seek power. We want freedom for Egypt from the oppressive regime,” he added.

Ghorab refused to name the political forces the group plans to contact in the coming period. “We are trying to coordinate and work with everyone,” he said.

Mahmoud Shaaban Bayoumi, a researcher at the Istanbul Aydın University who is based in Turkey, told Al-Monitor, “The statement is full of great contradictions in the Muslim Brotherhood’s ideology and their calls for the application of the Islamic law when ruling.”

“The idea of establishing the Muslim Brotherhood was basically to compete for power and end up founding an Islamic State. This is how the Muslim Brotherhood has presented itself since its inception 80 years ago. Yet now it states that it does not seek power. There is something that does not add up,” Bayoumi said.

He called for “disclosing the procedures and discussions that led to the issuance of this statement so we know what made the Islamists completely change their approach.”

“The Muslim Brotherhood had been calling for the past six years, since the ousting of Morsi in 2013, for demonstrations and protests, and now it had a sudden change of heart with this statement. I believe this message is not directed to the civil and left-wing political forces in Egypt, especially since the group is well aware that these forces are very much reluctant to work with it. I think the message was directed to some Gulf and European countries that reject Islamists,” Bayoumi said.

“The Muslim Brotherhood is somehow sending a message that it will no longer be obsessed with power but it wants to be allowed to work legitimately inside Egypt,” he concluded.

Al-Monitor contacted a prominent left-wing political leader and a member of one of the biggest political alliances, who refused to be named.

“No party wants to coordinate with the Muslim Brotherhood inside Egypt. The group made unforgivable errors during its time in power and exercised an authoritarian rule during its one year in power from May 2012 until June 2013,” the source said.

“The group’s statement said they realized the errors they committed. But we need to know what errors they are talking about. The Muslim Brotherhood removed all political parties from the political arena and allied itself with the military authority in Egypt after the January 25 Revolution. They also refused to listen to the people’s demands in the streets in 2013 and refused to hold early presidential elections that could have saved us from the rule of the army today,” the source added.

“The Muslim Brotherhood is a political and ideological enemy on a par with military rule. We might have similar demands when it comes to calling for the end of repression in Egypt and the release of political prisoners. But this does not mean that we would work together,” the source concluded.

Russia Launches Telescope Into Space To Map The Cosmos In ‘Outstanding’ Detail

Thanks To Socialism In Venezuela There Is No War, Says Cabello

Venezuela

Caracas, Jul 14 (Prensa Latina) Venezuela is not currently living a war thanks to Socialism and the guarantees and rights that the system promotes for the people, said the president of the National Constituent Assembly (ANC), Diosdado Cabello.
In an interview with Prensa Latina, the head of the plenipotentiary stated that ‘the coup d’état of 2002 was the one that opened the doors to start thinking about Socialism and now we are developing it’.

In this regard, he assured that the strategic vision of Commander Hugo Chávez, working to give the same conditions to Venezuelans, is the key to have the country on its feet today, ‘if it weren’t for that we would be killing ourselves,’ stressed Cabello.

He argued that the processes of Cuba and Venezuela, with their differences, have served to awaken popular consciousness. If the model were so bad, what would be the need to impose a blockade,’ asked the political leader.

In that sense, he emphasized that the facts have demonstrated to the Latin American peoples that capitalism is not the way for the social and political growth of those who decide to walk with their own ideas of progress.

When questioned about the process of rectifying errors within the Bolivarian Revolution, announced by President Nicolás Maduro at the beginning of this year, Cabello explained that the faults committed during these 20 years ‘have not demoralized the committed leadership.

‘We always make corrections that come from internal criticism. There are many things to do, for example, the productive issue, there is a debate on actions to expand productions. Venezuela has an extraordinary wealth in land, the worst thing about the country is having gotten used to living off the oil rent,’ explained Cabello.

He also explained that the head of state has asked to be helped to study the mechanisms to revive Chavismo within Socialism, ‘how to build more houses, how to make the communes start to produce, how to be less dependent on imports.

He added that if it were not for the economic, trade and financial sanctions promoted by the U.S. government and its allies, the South American nation would be able to deploy its revenues for the benefit of its citizens. At present we do not do anything with having money, because we do not have how to pay for medicines, we do not develop our health system as Cuba developed it, we have to rethink what to do, for example, with the pharmaceutical industry to circumvent Washington’s asphyxia,’ said Cabello.

In this line, he stressed that the blockade of the White House about five years ago has an open incidence, however, ‘the sabotages to the sector of the hydrocarbon industry are not new.

‘Oil, gold, gas, coltan reserves and the recent discovery of thorium are the target of the greed of the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump,’ added the first vice president of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV).

The political leader stressed that the failure of the U.S. authorities stems from the impossibility of sharing the national territory as they did during the Punto Fijo Pact, because ‘the Revolution came with an emancipatory political project and won the people.

On the other hand, Cabello reported that in the face of the intense campaign of discredit and the economic war, Venezuelans have reason to despair after suffering media attacks, hatred, incitement to violence, xenophobia in the world against their fellow citizens.

However, in the face of all these threats, we have been preparing, not for any war, but for a prolonged people’s war,’ stressed the PSUV representative.

‘The right wing has not understood it this way, they believe that the US Marines are arriving, they hide and that’s it. We are going to treat the internal enemies as traitors, and if to defend the Homeland we have to start with them, so it will be,’ he stressed.

He argued that they are heading to the three million militiamen to strengthen the civil-military union, along with the Bolivarian National Armed Force, who enlist in joint exercises to strengthen operational readiness.

Cabello stressed that the times of justice are some and the times of politics are others, and that with the acts of incessant failures, the internal opposition has facilitated the route to follow for the chavista victory.

‘They promised those who supported them that 80 percent of the military accompanied them, and it wasn’t like that, that the people were going to rise up and didn’t happen, that February 23rd was the supposed humanitarian aid, and that April 30th was the day of the final coup d’état, and it wasn’t,’ he summarized.

The president of the Constituent Assembly concluded by assuring that the defeat of the right is a short way off, ‘because the United States allows them to arm the game, but not to be lied to and robbed, and the opposition has lied and robbed

Floods have forced residents in western Greece to flee their homes, just days after seven people were killed in a separate storm that hit the northern part of the country.

Usually hot and dry during the summer, the bizarre weather has damaged roads near the cities of Nafpaktos and Patra, although no injuries or casualties have been reported.

However, many homes and shops in Nafpaktos have suffered from flooding, a fire service official told Reuters.

The floods come just days after seven people, including six tourists, were killed on Thursday when a violent storm struck northern Greece.

South Korean Firms To Keep Production Despite Japan’s Limitations

South korea

Seoul, July 14 (Prensa Latina) South Korean technology companies assured on Sunday to have a reserve of materials to keep equipment production going, although Japan banned the sale of certain products.
Vice President of Samsung Electronics, Lee Jae-yong, affirmed they can keep up the pace because they already have an adequate amount of the three key high-tech materials subject to Japanese restrictions against South Korea: fluorinated polyimide, photosensitive resin and fluoride of gaseous hydrogen.

Yonhap agency reports there is no definitive solution to the problem, since Japan’s trade dispute may last in the future; Lee ordered affiliates to prepare for contingency plans.

On July 4, Japan banned the sale to South Korea of the three materials used in semiconductors and displays of electronic devices, a measure that, according to Seoul, is a reprisal for sanctions on Japanese companies to compensate South Korean victims of forced labor during the Second World War.

Officials from both Asian countries met yesterday in Tokyo but they failed to reach an agreement to resolve the trade dispute.

According to the Japanese government, South Korean controls are too lax and some of these materials are sent to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), a country that could use them to manufacture weapons.

This commercial conflict is part of the constant friction between Japan and South Korea in recent months due to issues related to the Japanese colonization of the Korean peninsula from 1910 to 1945.

Egyptian Delegation Seeks To Prevent New Gaza Flare-Up

RAMALLAH: Egyptian security officials have held talks with Palestinian leaders in recent days in part to prevent a new flare-up of tensions between Israel and the Gaza Strip, Palestinian officials said Sunday.
The Egyptian delegation led by deputy intelligence chief Ayman Badie was in the Gaza Strip on Friday and Saturday and the occupied West Bank on Saturday, the officials said.
A statement on Saturday from Islamist movement Hamas said the discussions included talks on “understandings with the enemy” — a reference to a fragile cease-fire with Israel tested in recent days.
Contacted on Sunday, a Hamas official said the movement did not want to comment further beyond its official statements.
Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas met with the delegation in Ramallah on Saturday on the Gaza-Israel cease-fire and attempts to heal the long-existing division between Hamas and Abbas’s Fatah, official Palestinian news agency WAFA said.
Fresh tensions were feared after Israel shot dead a Hamas militant on Thursday along the border with the Gaza Strip, prompting the Islamist movement to vow revenge.
Israel later signalled it had fired in error, saying an initial inquiry showed soldiers misidentified a Hamas security agent as “an armed terrorist and fired as a result of this misunderstanding.”
On Friday night, Israel’s military said two rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory, but no damage or injuries were reported.
Earlier in the day, at least 33 Palestinians were shot and wounded during weekly demonstrations and clashes along the Gaza-Israel border, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
Under a fragile cease-fire brokered by Egyptian and UN officials following a severe flare-up in May, Israel is meant to ease aspects of its blockade on the strip in exchange for relative calm.
At least 295 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire in Gaza since major Hamas-backed protests began along the border fence in March 2018.
Most were killed during the protests and clashes but others died in air strikes or tank fire in response to violence from the strip.
Six Israelis have been killed.
Israel and Hamas have fought three wars since 2008.

It’s unfortunate there is no system to checkmate proliferation of churches in Nigeria —Adewole

Tribune Online
It’s unfortunate there is no system to checkmate proliferation of churches in Nigeria —Adewole

Bishop of Kwara Diocese, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Right Reverend Sunday Timothy Adewole, in this interview with BIOLA AZEEZ, speaks on religious matters and other issues. Excerpts:

With your level of experience in the vineyard, what do you think should be the role of the church in nation building?

From time immemorial, the church has been at the vanguard of civilisation. If you want to zero in on Nigeria, since 1842 when the missionaries came to Nigeria, they didn’t only come with gospel of Christ, they also came with education, health, literary education; they built schools, established hospitals so that when somebody is heavenly conscious, the person will not become earthly useless. That is the kind of role expected of the church in our contemporary society. If you give it a holistic approach, you will discover that if the church should be alive to its responsibility, society will be better than this. The church is expected to play a role in terms of provision of quality education, healthcare facilities, taking leading roles in building morals in the life of upcoming generation, teach how life should be centred on love, and love for yourself and your neighbours. If you love your neighbours, you won’t want any evil to befall them. The church is expected to be voice for the voiceless. It should be able to defend, champion the course of the people that are nobody in the society. The churches don’t necessarily need to become antagonists of governments. They should rather become liaison between the people and the government.

Do you think the church has performed creditably in discharging these roles?

Churches have not been doing this very well. If I’m to score them, I’ll give them 40 per cent because the churches major in the minor. We’ve left what we should have done undone. We’re not saying we should not participate in politics, but we should not be partisan. To play our role very well, we should be neutral. We’re not doing very well. Most of the schools brought at that time by churches are the ones that brought civilisation and people could read and write. It’s true that education is not cheap, but I don’t think churches should build schools that poor people should not be able to attend. Politically, socially, we’re not leading the people, economically we’re not helping them and morally, the church is even bankrupt.

Tithe payment has remained a major issue in the christendom. With your wealth of experience in the vineyard, who should pay tithe and who should receive tithe?

The Bible teaches that bring all the tithes to my storehouse so that there’ll be food in my storehouse. Using that as a template for paying tithe, it is expected of every Christian to pay tithe and it should be brought to the storehouse of God which is the church. The church would determine how the tithes would be utilised. Part of the tithes would be given to the needy and part for some other exigencies. Hardly would you not see someone asking for one form of assistance or the other on Sundays? For instance, in the Anglican communion, we have a structure when the tithe is brought to the church, we pay stipends of the priests, we take care of the needy like the widows and orphans in the church. But in some churches, without trying to condemn them, they teach that tithe should go to the pastor but I don’t think so. The tithe should be paid to the storehouse, which is the church, not an individual. There are occasions in the Bible where an individual receives tithe, but I think that’s on direct instruction from God. If God has instructed a believer to pay tithe to a particular pastor, no one can contest that. But in my opinion, tithe should go to the church. Bible says if you’ve done this, put me to test if I will not open windows of heaven. So, it’s a key to prosperity. If someone pays his tithe, there’s an injunction, an already declared blessings that’ll be upon that person and whatever he lays his hands upon. So, we can say spiritually, which will culminate in physical benefit, when you pay tithe, you’re fulfilling biblical teachings and there are blessings attached to that tithe. And if you don’t pay, there are punishments attached to it as well.

The recent happenings in Christianity in the country really call for concern. What went wrong?

Somebody once said that Christianity got to Israel as a religion, got to England as a political tool and came to Nigeria as a commercial tool. When you look at it truly, if one should call a spade a spade, we got it wrong when we began to commercialise the faith, when someone will say that go and bring certain amount of money, I want to anoint you. The Bible says freely you have received, freely you should give. We must not do things and charge people for them. I don’t charge people after praying for them. That does not mean that after some time, somebody comes back to say bishop, or pastor, take this gift out of his or her own volition. What I think the problem is in Nigeria is that there’s no system that can actually checkmate springing up of all these so-called churches. There are so many men of God today that have become God of men. They are no longer men of God, because they’re being controlled by their belly. They receive inspiration based on what’s troubling them. They were not called and there’s no system to check them. All these are happening because there is no system that can checkmake the activities of these churches and the so-called pastors. That’s where we got it wrong.

What measures should be put in place to get out of insecurity challenge facing the country?

When the wise men fail to participate in politics, they’d be ruled by crooks. Crooks will make laws and they would have to obey that law. The high level of insurgency was not unconnected with bad governance. If jobs are provided, people would be busy doing their job and live well. Graduates are driving tricycles. You can imagine how bad the economic situation is in the country when doctorate degree holders apply for truck drivers job. All these brought about insecurity. Apart from religious fundamentalists that accounted for certain percentage, unemployment contributed to it. I read recently where some kidnappers confessed to have made N200 million in six months. I learnt they now kidnap for as low as N250,000 or N150,000. We even learnt that money voted for purchase of military equipment was either diverted or mismanaged. Now,  how do you expect a man carrying cutlass to face a man with machine gun? The soldiers are human beings. Money spent so far on insecurity is enough to do so much development projects. Almost every sector has collapsed.

Why do we have many Christians marrying more than one wife nowadays?

You know the problem we have is still traceable to people who resorted to becoming pastors when there’s no job. And that’s why they change wives like clothes. They hide under the pretext of Holy Spirit. They say that Holy Spirit says I should divorce this woman and marry this woman. It’s not the Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit is not an altar of confusion. Because of that, you see pastors or pastors wives divorcing, accusing their partners of this and that. This is the era people carry big Bible, speak in tongues, and still go ahead to fornicate. We may say it’s because of the end time because the Bible says that when the end time comes, these are part of the things that will be happening. Thank God both religions believe in life after death. When you finish here, you’ll give account in heaven. It will propel us to do good to our neighbours and those we don’t know as it keeps ringing bell in our hearts. We pray God will help us but we should help ourselves as well.

Lack of jobs has worsened insecurity in Nigeria —Anglican primate

Primate Okoh

Primate, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Reverend Nicholas Okoh, has decried the spate of insecurity in the country.

Okoh urged all tiers of government to rise up to the task to combat the menace.

He made the call at the 10th year consecration anniversary and 50 years birthday celebration of Right Reverend Humphrey Olumakaiye, the Diocesan Bishop of Lagos at the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, Lagos.

He said that lack of jobs had made people to be desperate to indulge in criminal activities, which worsened security challenges in the country.

“Government at all levels should do the needful in beefing up security across the country as it will enhance development.

“Insecurity on our roads, in farms and communities have become proverbial.

“We should pray for the governors to guide the people that elected them into office. Nigerians have become so desperate in doing things that are evil,” he said.

Okoh, who described Olumakaiye as true man of God, said he made a remarkable achievement in Ilesha Diocese within two  years.

“He transformed the parish in Ilesha, he settled a long-time dispute between two communities. It is very difficult for the children of clerics to become clerics, your parents trained you well, the positive testimony of your parents robbed off on you,” he said.

According to Okoh, the call to the office of the bishop is a call within the call of God. The first call is the call to priesthood. The ordained ministry or the call of God.

“God called some servants to attain some special needs. The call of God is never a selfish one, it’s not for the sake of the one called because he is a messenger, therefore, he has to be obedient.

“God does not call one to be rich, it’s a by-product, it’s against this background that we say Olumakaiye is fulfilling his commitment to God,” he said.

Okoh also urged those who had been charged within management of things to bear good fruits.

“You are not only to serve, you are to go the extra-mile, it is important to be good, struggle to excel by praying, fasting and being concerned to the people you are in charge of.

“Fifty years is remarkable, it means you are not a boy or an old man but in between. We give thanks to God for notable achievements recorded. Fifty years to you is a long time. There are people who have no jobs at 50.

Olumakaiye, who appreciated the guest for great honour done to him, said at 50, he would try to do more for the propagation of God’s work.

Cleric charges FG, relevant authorities to redirect roles of orphanages

orphanage

Wife of the General Overseer of Spirit and Life Family Bible Church and Godhead Prayer Ministry, late Reverend Gordon Osagiede; Apostle (Mrs) Deb’rah Gordon-Osagiede, has lamented over the high rate of moral decadence in society, especially human trafficking and sexual exploitation of children and girls abroad.

The cleric, who is also the President of TABITHA empowerment programme for widows, also charged the Federal Government and relevant authorities to redirect the proper functions of orphanages in the country, as she expressed worries that some homes have derailed from the laws guiding the establishment.

Gordon-Osagiede made this known in Benin City, the Edo State capital, recently, adding that “I call on relevant authorities to redirect the path of derailed orphanages to their proper functions instead of being converted to commercial entities. If I had my way, I will close down some orphanages in this city.”

Speaking about how she has been able to sustain the ministry since the demise of her husband, she revealed that it had been the grace of God.

“I had to restructure my life in order to be able to survive when my husband died on Christmas day in 2001. It is a permanent sore in my heart and I feel the only way to respect him is to hold on to myself and carry on from where he stopped in the ministry.

“My husband and I were inseparable. The challenges were very serious when my husband died, but for the grace of God, I have been able to find solace in my heart,” she added.

“After the incident, I realised that marriage is out of my life as a guidance counsellor. It was really traumatic as a widow and we missed him every day,” she added.

Catholic priest warns students against drug consumption, other vices

Drug

Parish Priest of St. Sylvester Catholic Church, New Nyanya, Nasarawa State, Reverend Father Lawrence Soja-Anyembugu, has admonished students to shun drugs and all social vices that would affect their education pursuits.

Soja-Anyembugu gave the advice on Friday during his installation and presentation of certificate as Spiritual Patron of National Association of North Central Students (NANCS) by the association in Karu, Nasarawa state.

The priest urged the students to be good ambassadors of their families and schools by shunning drug abuse, examination malpractice, cultism and other  vices in their interest and for the overall development of the society.

According to him, indulging in drug abuse, examination malpractice and other  vices will adversely affect the education and lives of many Nigerian students and the society.

Soja-Anyembugu also enjoined the students to be serious with their academic pursuit in order to justify their parents and government huge investment in their education.

“I want to thank Almighty God and you for appointing and installing me as your spiritual patron. I am assuring you of my support and prayers to take your association to greater heights.

“My advice to you and other students is to be good ambassadors of your respective schools and to shun social vices in your interest and to move the North central zone and Nigeria to greater height.

“Because no society can achieve meaningful growth without sound education and it is the leeway to success in life and a route to escape from poverty box,” he said.

Soja-Anyembugu also advised the students to remain peaceful and be tolerant of one another considering the importance of peace and tolerance to societal development.

Besides, the clergy urged the students and other Nigerians to be law-abiding and respect constituted authorities for the progress and development of the country.

Earlier, Mr Aji Ibrahim, the National President of the association, said they decided to install Soja-Anyembugu as the Spiritual Patron of the association considering his contributions to the development of education sector and the society at large.

Methodist Prelate kicks against England Church’s decision on same-sex marriage

Methodist Prelate kicks against England Church’s decision on same-sex marriage

The Prelate, Methodist Church Nigeria, Most Reverend Samuel Uche, has decried the decision of the Methodist Church in England to adopt the same-sex marriage and other forms of gay and lesbian activities.

While speaking with newsmen at the Wesley House, Marina, Lagos, he said that same-sex relationships were contrary to God’s principles and laws.

“The British people told us that polygamy and polyandry are bad; why are they becoming morally and spiritually deprived?

“We will never accept it; Methodist Church Nigeria will not accept it, as the official mouthpiece of Methodist Church Nigeria and Diaspora.

“What I am saying now is the opinion of the church; we will not allow and accept it, and if they go ahead to ratify it by 2020, we will severe relationship and connections with them.

“If they do not have moral fibre, they should invite Methodist Church Nigeria to re-christianise them.

“This is satanic, and it is coming from the pit of hell,” he said.

The UK’s Methodist Church had taken a step closer to embracing same-sex marriage after members overwhelmingly backed a measure that opens the door to same-sex unions.

The church members at the Methodist Conference in Birmingham on July 3 voted overwhelmingly in favour of a policy that could lead to the church embracing same-sex unions.

The motion, which passed by 247 votes to 48, “consents in principle to the marriage of same-sex couples on Methodist premises… and by Methodist ministers, probationers or members.”

The vote does not automatically mean same-sex weddings are permitted, however, as the proposal will require a second vote at the July 2020 conference.

Zamfara governor knows he can’t win second term, except… —Sani Yerima

Tribune Online
Zamfara governor knows he can’t win second term, except… —Sani Yerima

Senator Ahmed Sani was governor of Zamfara State between 1999 and 2007 on the ticket of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). He was elected as senator to represent Zamfara West senatorial zone in 2007 and he emerged as Senate Minority Leader. Now a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), he recently spoke with journalists in Abuja on a wide range of issues in the polity. TAIWO AMODU was there.

HOW do you feel that Zamfara State that you once governed is now under the control of the opposition and what do you think is responsible for the loss for the All Progressives Congress (APC)?

First of all, as a politician, I haven’t been happy with the development, but I believe that God alone has power over all things. I believe it is an act of God. What happened had to happen; everyone had to play his role to actualise what we have seen today.

The major cause is breaches of rules. As you know, in party politics, we had meetings at the APC and the president was there. The national chairman was there. At the well-attended meeting, we said there had to be open primaries, whether it came in form of direct, indirect or consensus. The party said it wasn’t comfortable with the arrangement in Zamfara. A committee was set up, just like similar committees were sent to every other state. And the committee came back without conducting primaries. The chairman set up another panel and nobody knew what happened.

Tears as Ekiti community mourns local security leader murdered by herdsmen

I tried my best. As you all know that the then governor was my product; God gave him that position and I led the struggle to bring him to that office. We had problem with my former successor who was my deputy for eight years. They later resolved that there won’t be problem any longer.

People didn’t know what really happened. The main cause of the quarrel between me and the governor then (Umar Shinkafi), who was my deputy, was the fact that after endorsing him, we endorsed Abdulazeez Yari as his running mate. We campaigned together until seven days to the election, when he collected his Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) form to fill. He came to me in the night and said he wanted me to bless Yari instead. And I said it wasn’t possible. That was the cause of all the problems. And Yari came to discover that we were arguing about him and his so-called people. By that time, he had already established his presence. He was the incoming governor and I was the outgoing governor.

So, Yari too said he wasn’t comfortable with the crisis and said if I imposed him on the governor, after the election, he would just use the state Assembly to remove him. So, a decision was reached to replace Yari and we allowed him to go to the House of Representatives.

From that moment, I said I wouldn’t come out in the open to speak on anything Yari was doing. I would meet him in his room and advise him. If he takes to my advice, I would be happy. But if he takes my advice and we have problems, then, I wouldn’t be happy.

So, I did my best. I tried to project myself as a father in Zamfara politics. I refused to come out in the media to argue with Yari or any person in Zamfara, but what happened did happen. I tried to mediate among the party, the national chairman, the state chapter of the APC and the governor himself. Unfortunately, we landed ourselves in the position we found ourselves.

However, the same governor that is governing today was my commissioner for eight years. He came to the House of Representatives when I came to the Senate on the ticket of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). That is why people were surprised when I went to congratulate him. I believe that party politics ends as soon as election is completed and a winner is declared. So, as an elder statesman in Zamfara, I had to go and congratulate him and wish him well. I will also continue to advise him so that we can have peace and prosperity in the state.

Do you see the APC coming back after four years?

Let me tell you one thing: Since 1998, when this dispensation started, the then All Peoples Party (APP) was transformed to ANPP. And as a result of the merger between the then Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), ANPP and Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and others, we had APC. Since then, I have never lost an election.

In 1998/1999, I became governor; in 2003, I was reelected, and in 2007, when I was leaving office, we elected my former deputy. He only defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and that was the only time he ruled the state. We went into election and defeated him in 2011. This governor assumed office as a result of Supreme Court ruling. We will never, by the grace of God, lose election in Zamfara.

Are you not worried that a once peaceful Zamfara is like a theater of banditry now?

I am very worried. You see, when I was governor, I did everything I could to the extent that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) during Olusegun Obasanjo-led government had to write a report to say that Zamfara was virtually crime free.

The records are there till today. They even put our crime rate at two per cent. I don’t know the criteria they used to arrive at that figure.

But what happened after me? This thing didn’t start now. It started with cattle rustling during the government of Shinkafi who succeeded me; I think in 2007.

From cattle rustling, kidnapping started; then, something I can call insurgency is what is happening now, because the armed bandits would just go to a village and start killing people in form of revenge.

What happened is that during the time of the former governor in 2019, he used what he called vigilante group and this group started attacking the Fulani who they believed were the cattle rustlers. This was to the extent that a Fulani man would come to the market and he would be lynched.

From there, they started taking up arms, apart from their normal sticks, to defend themselves. But I believe that this is something that can be resolved. It isn’t only in the military way. The current administration has started talking to them and they have started responding. Even yesterday (Thursday), I was in Zamfara to condole with the former speaker over the loss of his father. I also went to condole with the governor and the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), because it is a general loss, and I found out that the bandits have released a lot of people.

In fact, some of them are from Sokoto State, because the governor of Sokoto State was there to take charge of his own people who were released.

So, that negotiation is important, because, as I told you, criminality can start small and grow large. It is not always a matter of military solution. I think the method that we are adopting now: talking to them, appealing to them to surrender their arms is good. And their parents were there. They know these people and they know the communities. I think we are going to adopt two approaches: negotiation and the military action. We started with negotiation only, but it didn’t work. But the carrot and stick approach is working. That is what we are going to continue to use.

There is a disturbing dimension to this issue of banditry. That is the alleged involvement of traditional rulers. As a former chief executive of that state, would you believe this to be true?

There are two things. One is the level of poverty in the society. People have forgotten that during the last administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, the economy was virtually on its knees, because of the level of corruption that was all over the place. By the time this administration came in, the task before it wasn’t only corruption, but also principally the economy and insecurity.

Remember that Boko Haram was already in Abuja and something had to be done. So, a lot of resources were required to fight insurgency and the fight against corruption was also not easy. However, by the grace of God, the harvest in the following year was good and the economy started changing. But that level of poverty that was inherited had made some people, including some of the traditional rulers, to start looking at other ways.

The second issue is fear for lives. Some people, because of the little amount of money they were getting from the bandits, started giving them information, hiding them or giving them all forms of supports. But some did that out of fear for their lives.

If you can recall, one of the things that happened was the kidnapping of an emir in Zamfara. He was taken away for a very long time and was freed after some ransom was paid. So, every emir started being afraid of the bandits. But I think what is happening now, with the action that has been taken, sanity will prevail. You can see the former administration led by Yari had to suspend one emir for his alleged role in support of the bandits. It also affected some district heads. From that moment, every emir has come to the realisation that it is either he supports the government to eradicate banditry or loses his position.

So, I think the two issues of poverty and fear of insurgents made some of the traditional rulers to be part of the problem. But now, things are changing.

You just mentioned in passing that the APC will regain Zamfara. What is happening seems to be at variance from your optimism. You are aware of suspension and counter suspension saga by factions in the state chapter of the party. As a leader, what are you doing to reconcile the warring groups?

It is all part of politics. You see, from the beginning, all these factions you are talking about believe in me taking actions. They believe that I could have brought them together; and that is what I tried to do initially, but it didn’t work.

But as we speak now, every so-called faction is awaiting the intervention of the National Working Committee (NWC). What is likely to happen is the restructuring of the party; its reengineering. We have to look at the structure again and make sure that we bring them together, using the party machinery to ensure that we now harmonise the groups and come up with a solid structure in the state.

You said your party would win back Zamfara. How can it achieve that, considering the level of acceptance that the new administration has earned for itself since it assumed office?

Let me cast your mind back to 1998. At that time, when the APP, PDP and other parties were contesting in Zamfara, my party, the APP won almost all the local government areas in Zamfara State, including in the state capital.

One of the candidates who lost in that chairmanship contest, because we started with chairmanship election, was the current governor. He contested for local government chairmanship of his local government under my party and he lost. I appointed him Commissioner for Local Government to supervise the person that defeated him and that is what is bringing us together.

What you see him doing now is not only his work; he was my commissioner for eight years. And he came to the National Assembly, as I said, with me. It is a combination of the advice he was listening to and the fact of all of us working together. It isn’t he alone.

So, for that, you can now know whether it will be easy or difficult for us in Zamfara. Don’t even be surprised, if he moves to the APC.

We are expecting the list of ministerial nominees from President Muhammadu Buhari. Against the backdrop of the party’s Next Level mantra, what kind of cabinet do you envisage?

Well, we have learnt a lot of lessons from the formation of his first cabinet and I am sure Mr. President himself would have listened to the party and he is now going to select politicians who know what their people require to run the affairs of the various ministries. He has seen the lapses of the first four years by nominating largely technocrats in his cabinet. But the party has been talking and I am sure the president has listened.

So, I am expecting very credible team, consisting of both technocrats and politicians. And the president has also said that is what is likely to be in his new cabinet. With that, the Next Level that the president is talking about can be realised.

You have said you played a sort of behind-the-scenes role to support the PDP in the last governorship election and you have continued in that line. There have been insinuations of an agreement between you and Governor Bello Matawalle that he would defect to the APC. Are you confident that he will fulfill his own side of the deal?

First of all, there was never an agreement between us. You see, what I said was that he was my commissioner for eight years and there was never a time either myself or the NWC of the APC had any understanding with him that ‘go and win and then, you come to the APC.’ No. I am just a politician and someone here raised a question on how we can take over and I said the governor knows better. He knows the structure that brought him to limelight to the extent that he became commissioner and went to the House of Representatives. And people now know him.

He also knows that it was the Supreme Court, not the electorate, that gave him that position by the grace of Allah (SWT). So, if he wants a second term, if he wants to find it easy, as a politician, he knows what to do. That is all I am saying.

You are one of the architects of the Sharia law enforcement in Nigeria. Do you have any regret doing that?

You see, some people don’t even know what Sharia is all about. At the time I said I was going to launch Sharia, of course, there was so much hues and cries. I would have done my project quietly, because Zamfara was 99.9 per cent Moslems and the agitation for Sharia didn’t start with me. It had been there in that enclave; Sokoto-Zamfara was very forward in terms of establishment or introduction of Sharia, because Sharia is the beginning of Islam.

People had the misconception that Sharia is only when you cut hands or when you flog people or you kill them. It had two components: it has the capital punishment that you must adjudicate on in the court and the other, which is about relationship and other activities of human beings; their day-to-day activities. If you go to Zamfara or any other state that adopted Sharia when we started in 2000 today, you will give us credit. You will never find a gambling house, unlike before where you find gambling halls. And you can’t find alcohol. You can only find alcohol in military or police barracks. They were all successfully banned and the attitude of people have changed.

Look at our girls, they used to come out with parts of their bodies open. Because Sharia prohibits that, we introduced a new form of dressing which is called hijab and it is approved by Islam under Sharia. Today, you go to the primary, secondary schools and even universities in the entire Northern Nigeria, you won’t find that. You can even recall that one lady who finished from the Law School refused to remove her hijab and it became a national controversy. And in the end, she won in court, because she has her human rights guaranteed under the Constitution of Nigeria.

So, Sharia has brought attitudinal change which will remain with us by the grace of God. You know when Allah sent Prophet Muhammed, he established Sharia and there has always been caliphate coming and going; it is just a religious thing. Before Prophet Muhammed, there was Prophet Musa; there was Prophet Isah (Jesus). They all came to their people and you can see division in different types of religion, both in Christianity and Islam. In Judaism, you see some extremists; some are called fundamentalists, while some are moderates like me. I don’t believe in extremism. Therefore, we are operating a constitutional system.

When I came in as governor, I was elected under the constitution and the constitution is what I used to enact all the laws I enacted in Zamfara. That was why nobody could challenge it.

Today, all the laws are being implemented. You see, if you have a governor who has the political will to make sure that laws are implemented, you won’t have problems. The laws are already there, nobody can remove them; it is only implementation that is needed. So, you have some governors who are serious and you have some who aren’t. This is how it will continue. It depends on who is in the saddle. But the attitudinal change that has been achieved will be there for a long time. You can’t go to my village or anywhere in Zamfara and say you want to establish brothels. No way. The people will never allow it.

Before I became governor, in the state capital, there were more than 500 brothels. But today, there is none, not only in Zamfara, but also in the entire 12 Northern states that are practising Sharia.

What is your take on the activities of Ibrahim El Zakzakky-led Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), otherwise called the Shitte sect, which is constituting security menace in Abuja?

This borders on national security. It isn’t about a religious group. I don’t think that any individual or group is greater than the country called Nigeria. If the government realises that a group is constituting itself to security threat to the nation, I am sure the government has the operatives and machinery to handle it.

I don’t believe that the Shittes are going to cause any security problem in Nigeria so long as the security agencies are doing their work.
