In Niger State: NOA urges communities to surrender illegal weapons to govt.

National Orientation Agency (NOA)

The state Director of NOA, Alhaji Mohammed Ali, made the call while inaugurating a one-day step-down of security sensitisation forum against political thuggery, drug addiction and kidnapping in Bosso Local Government Area.

National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Niger on Thursday urged communities to surrender unregistered or illegal weapons in their possession to government.

The state Director of NOA, Alhaji Mohammed Ali, made the call while inaugurating a one-day step-down of security sensitisation forum against political thuggery, drug addiction and kidnapping in Bosso Local Government Area.

Ali said Federal Government was doing everything possible to regulate the use of firearms and other dangerous weapons to secure lives and property in the country.

He added that “the Federal Government has given time-frame to mop up unregistered firearms and other dangerous weapons in circulation.

“So, if you have any arms and ammunition in your house, you should surrender them to the nearest police because government will go from house to house to recover such weapons.”

The director explained that stockpiling illegal weapons in communities was responsible for some of the clashes among rural dwellers.

He noted that “some 30 years ago, we slept with our two eyes closed in Nigeria but today, the reverse is the case.

“We now have all forms of community clashes, armed robbery, kidnapping and other forms of vices.”

The NOA official urged people in the area to embrace positive attitude to make the country a better place for all.

He advised the people to contribute at the forum, as government would use their suggestions to formulate policies that would guarantee safety of lives and property.

He said “if you have any complaint, feel free to report to us here or the nearest NOA office close to you.”

Munir Lawal, the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DPO) in charge of the area, explained categories of offences to the people, ranging from civil to criminal offence.

Lawal advised the people not to take laws into their hands on any issue but to report to the police for proper action.

He appealed to the people to help security agencies by reporting suspicious objects, movements and persons to the nearest security agency.

Alhaji Bello Mohammed, the Fulani Leader in the area, attributed herders/farmers clashes to miscreants and not the real herdsmen.

Mohammed called for information sharing among community leaders and Fulani leaders to avert clashes.

Alhaji Mohammed Doma, the village Head of Garatu, commended Federal Government for initiating the forum and promised that it would go down to the grassroots.

Meanwhile, NOA said the sensitisation, tagged “Do the Right Thing, Change Begins with Me’’ carried out in Garatu community in Bosso Local Government Area of Niger would be extended to the remaining 24 local government areas of the state.

Brymo: Here's what singer was trying to tell you in his "Heya" video

Here's what Brymo was trying to tell you in his "Heya" video

Brymo's "Heya" is now popular for the singer's bare behind but he was really trying to tell you a lot more.

Since returning to the fold of independent artistes, Brymo has shown a knack for pushing the boundaries and exhibiting a form of original artistry that is rare in the Nigerian space. But none of all the things he’s done in the past, not even that time he painted himself in black and sat on a stool could have prepared us to see his black African behind in the video for his new single, “Heya.

Except you’re one of Bobrisky’s fans, no-one wants to see another man’s butt.

Brymo’s artistic endeavour has drawn a wide gamut of reactions. There are those who believe this is an attempt at faux brilliance from an artiste who seems so desperate to carve his own niche and distance himself from the rest of the bunch.

Brymo’s fans though believe otherwise. For them, this is another masterclass, a moment of brilliance from an artiste whose ability is yet underrated.

It’s easy in times like this to get embroiled in the hoopla that Brymo must have expected when he put the video together, or to think more about how he’s using his bare buttocks to sell his album.

Between the leather covering over his masculine parts, his emergence from the dark water into a sparse, desert-like field of ruins and the emotive nature of his singing, Brymo’s “Heya” video has little to do with sex appeal and more to do with the idea of being a modern African.

The video is heavy with symbolism, starting with Brymo’s resigned appearance from a stark, dense body of water with a piece of leather that leaves his cheeks at the mercy of the elements.

A tribute to African identity

It is a throwback to an older time when African civilisations manipulated leather and plants into pieces of clothing, a time that Brymo pays respect to more because it was before the intrusion of the white man and colonialism.

Hear the man tell it himself.

ALSO READ: Why singer appeared nude, wore 'G-String', showed his “butt” in his new ‘Heya’ video

In an e-mail to Pulse Nigeria, the alternative folk artiste said, “ I decided to appear how my forbears dressed before the arrival of civilization to Nubian continent,”

We have all seen the costume in many movies, “Heya” was my own representation of that age; A bushman in the city, that’s my image of most black Africans of today. Although we reside in cities, we are still villagers in our thoughts and actions

It reminds you of one of the few African civilisations which have retained its culture through the years.

The San Bushmen are a tribe of hunter-gatherers who live in Southern Africa.

The tribe originally refers to themselves as “San” or “Saan”; the suffix “bushmen” was added by the white men ( which I say at the risk of over-flogging the same “anti-colonialist trope) to qualify the fact that they, despite the urbanisation around them, have preferred to live in the bush, in what has been their habitat for centuries.

Regression, brought on by Ignorance

Brymo addresses this perception, that Africans are backwards because we do not fit into western ideas of what civilisation is.

Moving from that body of water to a stark desert-like clearing refers to the loss of our values and originality that has been induced by the pressure to fit in, to meet certain standards.

ALSO READ: How Western influence broke spirituality and identity in African music

It is, at its most basic form, regression brought on by ignorance. The kind that invites pity, or at the most Nigerian form of it, a shout of “heya”, if only you had known to do better.

The reaction online is mixed, and many BrymO fans think it’s exactly what they wanted to see,” says Brymo. “For those who disagree with the image, I understand that they have forgotten how people dressed across the continent many centuries ago, or they couldn’t fit the costume to the story in the song… but what better way is there to tell the story of our disloyalty and disservice to each other, if not by bearing it all, butt and what not… lol."

No-one could have put it better.

Runtown: Label boss denies threatening to deal with singer with by releasing his sex tape

Runtown

Runtown's label boss denies trying to blackmail the pop star with a sex tape.

Record label boss owner Okwudili Umenyiora has denied being involved in the leak of a sex tape online that allegedly features singer Runtown.

Earlier today, Thursday, March 29, 2018, an Instagram account owned by an individual named Eze Kevin shared a screenshot of an alleged WhatsApp chat between him and Eric Many Entertainment boss.

The chat makes mention of a sex tape featuring Eric Many act Runtown.

The Eze Kevin went on to release a clip of the sex tape on his Instagram account, although Runtown's face couldn't be identified in it.

Eric Many has come to issue a disclaimer over the purported video describing it as 'fake' and 'childish'.

"At first glance, you'll realize that the Instagram page in question obviously belongs to a social media influencer. How else do you explain a page of someone in the entertainment industry with over 11k followers and 7 posts with no known affiliation. The Whatsapp chat that accompanied the story is also fake."

"What we (Eric Many) have done as a respected entertainment company is to put out fact with legal documents and backings, we will not be drawn into a childish charade and drag ourselves in the mud with whoever is behind this fake news. We maintain that we have no sex tape of Runtown and the alleged Whatsapp chat is fake. We have a Federal High Court Injunction, we do not  need to resort to blackmail as we solely rely on the legal system and will update the public as the legal proceedings move,"  the statement read.

We all know how messy the relationship between Runtown and his former label boss Okudili where his former record label Eric Many filed an injunction at a Federal High court against the singer for breach of contract.

According to a statement sent to Pulse via email, the entertainment company served Runtown the court papers a few days back Suit No: FHC/L/CS/267/2018. Eric Many in its statement of claim is seeking the sum of

"N65 MILLION being General Damages against the Defendant (Runtown) in favour of the Plaintiff for infringement of the Plaintiff's copyright to the collaborative musical works "Call Me" and "Weekend" both of which featured the Defendant as well as N5 MILLION as costs of this action".   "Eric Many has chosen to hold back on anything pertaining to Runtown, till further investigations. This means that anyone who engages Runtown without a written approval from Eric Many, signed by the chairman, will be sued heavily.

Runtown has not yet made a statement concerning the sex tape allegation.

MMM Nigeria: Ponzi scheme goes into pause mode to honour late founder, Sergey Mavrodi

MMM Nigeria enters pause mode over Sergey Mavrodi's death

The future of the financial pyramid scheme, MMM, hangs in limbo after the death of Sergey Mavrodi

Few days after the death of Sergey Mavrodi, founder of the financial pyramid scheme, MMM system is going on “pause” mode as an honour.

Within the period of 'pause' mode, Mavrodians (participants) will not be able to provide and get help.

Mavrodi died at the age of 62 on March 26, 2018. His death came as shock to millions of its global participants as the future of the financial pyramid scheme hangs in limbo.

A Moscow-based daily newspaper Moskovskij Komsomolets had reported that Mavrodi died in the Russian capital, Moscow after he felt weakness and pain in the chest area.

In a statement to its participants announcing Mavrodi's death, released by an Administrator, on its platform, MMM said the system has been shifted to a “pause” mode.

It is impossible to provide and get help; Mavros don’t grow. In the near future, Administration will take a decision concerning MMM’s future and report on it officially. Hoping for your understanding.

Sergey Mavrodi devoted his life to serving other people. He abstained from conveniences and material benefits, communication with his family and friends in order that no one could influence him and the System. Sergey Mavrodi worked until his dying day: without holidays and vacations. Mr Mavrody always felt his responsibility for the participants and the System. He never pursued any self-interest.

“Sergey Mavrodi is a great man who managed to unite a huge number of people worldwide in the struggle for a single purpose. MMM was his life’s work; he dreamed of changing the world. Sergey Mavrodi, you will always be in our hearts!” the statement reads.

When Business Insider Sub Sahara Africa contacted the MMM ‘faceless official’ in Nigeria, Danny, a consultant and Agent via a chat said the pause mode is temporary and it is a worldwide agreement to honour the late Mavrodi.

On the fear of participants and the future of the scheme, the Agent said the system will soon come back but did not specify a date.

It's normal for everyone to observe the pause for the founder.” the agent said.

On the Facebook page of MMM Nigeria, a participant wrote: “….that the system is now on pause mode in honour of your departure "worldwide" is a welcome idea.

“The global "pause mode" serves as a perfect time for the Admin to resume with the creation of "MMM COIN" for easy exchange. ….adieu great man Mavrodi…..”

In 2016, the Central Bank of Nigeria, as well as the Nation's legislative arms had issued strong warnings to Nigerians to desist from MMM and other Ponzi Schemes. It was the same period the country's economy contracted by 2.06 percent witnessing its worst economic recession in over 20 years.

This made Nigerian youths to be vulnerable to all kinds of pyramid schemes and betting opportunities that offers quick and multiple incomes.

Remains Of 20 Korean War Soldiers Buried In China

Korean War

The remains of 20 Chinese soldiers killed in the 1950-53 Korean War were laid to rest at the Cemetery of Revolutionary Martyrs in Shenyang, capital of northeast China’s Liaoning Province on Thursday.

More than 300 people, including government and military officials, Korean War veterans and members of the public, attended the ceremony.

“I’m so glad my comrades are finally home but it is a great pity they cannot witness the prosperity of our country now,” said Li Weibo, 87, a Korean War veteran.

Some 197,653 Chinese People’s Volunteers soldiers were confirmed to have died during the war, most of whom were buried on the Korean Peninsula.

According to an agreement between China and the Republic of Korea (ROK), the two sides arrange an annual hand-over of remains of Chinese soldiers found in ROK, which usually occurs before the Tomb-Sweeping Day.

The remains of 569 soldiers were returned to China from ROK between 2014 and 2017.

Tinubu: APC chieftain calls Obasanjo bad belle letter writer

Tinubu calls Obasanjo bad belle letter writer

Tinubu took time out of his speech to take a dig at Obasanjo.

National Leader of the ruling All Progressives' Congress (APC) appeared to take a shot at former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, for his infamous letter which criticised President Muhammadu Buhari's administration in January.

While speaking during the colloquium in honour of his 66th birthday in Lagos on Thursday, March 29, 2018, Tinubu took time out of his speech to take a dig at Obasanjo.

He said, "Somebody who's writing a letter these days, a letter of politics. As if they've never been there before. Bad belle letters…don't worry. I don't want to address that today."

In Obasanjo's 13-page statement titled, "The Way Out: A Clarion Call for Coalition for Nigeria Movement", the former president made his feelings about Buhari's administration known by poking at its most pointed failures that have become a consistent source of anguish for many Nigerians.

Obasanjo faulted the president for exhibiting nepotic interest in his dealings as the nation's Commander-in-Chief and dividing the country as a result.

The former president advised Buhari to step down after the end of his tenure in 2019 and decline to seek re-election because he doesn't appear to possess the ability to move the country any further than he already has.

Coalition for Nigeria

In that public statement, Obasanjo also expressed his lost hope in the ability of the ruling APC and the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in providing Nigeria with the initiative it needs to progress.

The former president's solution to being free of the dominance of both parties was what he called the Coalition for Nigeria movement.

According to him, the coalition will be a movement of all well-meaning Nigerians that will engage in democratic practices that will drive Nigeria forward and be a source of hope for all Nigerians for speedy, quality and equal development, security, unity, prosperity and progress.

He said, "Coalition for Nigeria must be a Movement to break new ground in building a united country, a socially cohesive and moderately prosperous society with equity, equality of opportunity, justice and a dynamic and progressive economy that is self-reliant and takes active part in global division of labour and international decision-making.

"The Movement must work out the path of development and the trajectory of development in speed, quality and equality in the short, medium, and long-term for Nigeria on the basis of sustainability, stability, predictability, credibility, security, cooperation and prosperity with diminishing inequality.

"What is called for is love, commitment and interest in our country, not in self, friends and kinship alone but particularly love, compassion and interest in the poor, underprivileged and downtrodden.

"It is our human duty and responsibility so to do. Failure to do this will amount to a sin against God and a crime against humanity."

Despite his backing for the group, the former president has also made it known that he'll cease to be a part of the movement the minute it becomes a political platform that sponsors candidates for elections.

The movement was officially launched in Abuja on January 31, 2018, with Obasanjo signing up as a member the next day.

Conte: Chelsea Can Still Beat Spurs To Top Four Spot

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte says his side can close the gap on Tottenham Hotspur as the race for a top four finish hots up with eight games left to play in the Premier League.

Chelsea are fifth on 56 points, five points behind Spurs who occupy the final UEFA Champions League qualifying spot.

In the reverse fixture played earlier in the season, a double from Marcos Alonso gave Chelsea a 2-1 win at Wembley Stadium.

“We can get close to Tottenham in the table if we can win on Sunday,” Conte said in his press conference on Thursday. “Nothing is impossible at the moment, and we just have to try to win every game.

“We are talking about a really good team with many talented players and a really good manager.

“I have great respect for Tottenham. They have grown a lot and now are one of the best teams in England.”

On the injury front, Conte gave an update on David Luiz, Andreas Christensen, Ross Barkley and Gary Cahill.

“Checks need to be made on Thibaut Courtois and Andreas Christensen to find out their physical condition and whether they can play on Sunday,” the former Juventus manager added.

“David Luiz is out for at least another three weeks as he continues his recovery from a knee problem. Gary Cahill is an option in central defence if Christensen is not fit. Ethan Ampadu is out injured for the season.
“Ross Barkley will play for our Development Squad on Saturday as he continues his recovery from injury.”

Lily Allen is set to drop a new album “No Shame” and as revealed on the tracklist, the album features Burna Boy on the fourth track titled “Your Choice”. The album also features vocal contributions from British artistes Giggs and Lady Chann.

No Shame is Lily Allen’s fourth studio album and it is slated for a June 8th release.

Pastor Kumuyi: Deeper Life G.O holds Easter retreat

Pastor Kumuyi, Deeper Life G.O holds annual Easter retreat

The church is promising its members a ‘new era’ at the Easter retreat.

Pastor William Folorunsho Kumuyi is holding an Easter retreat, an annual programme of his church.

The General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, announced the news in a statement, released on Wednesday, March 28, 2018.

According to the cleric, attendees should expect to receive great blessings as the retreat will usher in a ‘new era.’

The statement read: “While formally announcing the Easter retreat through satellite last Monday, the respected cleric charged the entire followership of the church to fully attend the three-day annual event, which promises manifold spiritual and physical blessings, charging them never to allow anything, however, desirable, to hinder them from receiving what God would do in their lives.

“Pastor Kumuyi also reminded the congregants that the retreat period offers a great opportunity for preparing every heaven-bound saint to keenly await the soon return of the Lord Jesus Christ.

“He equally charged them to actively invite those outside the fold of God’s kingdom to attend, noting that God’s blessings awaited those who would dare heed His entreaty to return to Him in penitence and repentance.

The retreat themed, ‘Heirs of His Kingdom’ will hold from Thursday (today) to Sunday at the Deeper Life Conference Centre, KM 42 Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Fast Facts on Pastor Kumuyi

He is the founder and leader of Deeper Life, which began as Bible study group with just 15 members.

In recent times, the pastor has announced his plans to remove some doctrines his death.

“Before I leave, I mean before I go, I’m going to remove everything that I set up, that I thought would help Deeper Life and make us holy, and make us sanctified, make us deep, make us deeper. And if I see it is not making us deeper and shallow, before I leave I will uproot all of them and will send to you a pure church before I leave,” said the cleric.

Pastor Kumuyi has been called one of the “500 most powerful people on the planet” by Foreign Policy magazine.

He is also an author of at least 10 books.

Entertainment: The last great clothing store

Bill Bolling, a salesman at Boyds, in Philadelphia, March 24, 2018. Open since 1938, Boyds, open since 1938, has fought back against e-commerce and the rise of the Supreme hoodie with extra-personal service and new designer labels.

In the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s here, as in many big cities, there were dozens of independent men’s clothing stores selling tailored suits, sports coats, dress shirts and “furnishings” (socks, ties, pocket squares) to dapper professionals.o

For 80 years, the family-owned business has outfitted lawyers, bankers, doctors, politicians and famous athletes, with all-American brands like Hickey-Freeman, groovy European labels like Pierre Cardin and Tiger of Sweden, and lately high-end Italian suiting and sportswear from Brioni, Isaia and Brunello Cucinelli.

When former basketball star Julius Erving flew into the city for a visit from the Bahamas during the January cold snap and found himself in need of warmer clothes, he called Boyds, as he has since back when he was Dr. J., slamming dunks for the 76ers.

“Boyds was the place to shop,” said Erving, who all these years later still deals with the same salesman, Bill Bolling. “They always had somebody who would make sure everything was just so: sleeve length, cuff length. They know what you like.”

Little about the store has changed, though the address has: The longtime Market Street location was redeveloped by the city to build a convention center in 1990, and since then, Boyds has been housed in a grand, five-story limestone building on 1818 Chestnut St., near Rittenhouse Square. Philadelphians, or a certain affluent segment of them, regard Boyds as a destination, a place to drive to on a Saturday from their homes on the Main Line. The store is where a young man goes to buy his wedding suit, and returns 30 years later, grayer, wealthier, thicker in the middle, this time bringing his son to buy his wedding suit.

Such tradition and continuity across generations was once commonplace in retail apparel. But in this age of dressing down and click-and-buy, in an environment where the big chains have killed off the mom-and-pops and Amazon is killing off the chains, Boyds now feels like a shopping experience out of time.

Dolce by Dumbwaiter

There is a parking lot for customers across from the store, in a Center City location that a developer would pay millions to build atop. There is a fifth-floor workshop with 39 full-time tailors and pressers who do free alterations, sending finished garments down to the sales floors in a dumbwaiter.

There are salespeople, several in fact, who have worked at Boyds since wide lapels were in style. Impeccably dressed and coifed, they stand beside counters and clothing racks, at the ready to give solicitous service to the next person who steps off the elevator. Bolling, a trim, soft-spoken man of 60, maintains for his best clients a notebook, into which he records the details of their every purchase and tucks a fabric swatch.

“When a gentleman is buying four, five garments a season, it’s easy to get something too similar,” Bolling said. The notebook preserves “a perfect history. It’s giving their wardrobe maximum attention.”

Out-of-towners who happen into this retail anachronism tend to react first with astonishment, followed by a sigh of pleasure.

“It’s how it should be,” said Philip Scotti, the owner of P.J. Clarke’s, the Manhattan saloon, who on a recent Friday was in the men’s sportswear department. “They actually wait on you.”

Scotti was picking up some jeans, slacks and a sports coat. He was also busting the chops of his favorite salesman, Jon Segal, a native Philadelphian who bought his bar mitzvah suit and shoes at Boyds. Thirty-five years later, Segal, 48, works alongside the man who sold them to him.

Scotti, who is opening an outpost of P.J. Clarke’s in Philadelphia, has been coming in to shop whenever he is in town on business. Though he has plenty of options at home in New York, he prefers Boyds, he said, because the treatment is attentive but also laid-back, owing to the personal approach. Returns, for instance, require a simple phone call. “I can imagine calling Barneys and getting 17 different people on the line,” Scotti said.

He added, “I wish all stores were like this. There’s not many left.”

It’s very possible that Boyds isn’t just one of a dying breed of old-fashioned retailers, however. Given its scale (50,000 square feet of selling space over four floors), and the level of service it provides, and the tailor shop and complimentary parking lot, and the near-century of independent operation by the same family, it may be the only clothing store of its kind in the country.

Last week, Boyds unveiled a new women’s ready-to-wear, handbag and shoe department that covers the entire first floor and mezzanine level. It’s the first phase of a $10 million renovation by DAS Architects, a local design firm, intended to modernize and lighten the interior, with its heavy Greek columns and dark-wood cabinetry. The other, more pressing goal is to bring in female shoppers.

A former vice president of handbags and accessories for Bergdorf Goodman, Deborah Soss, has been hired to introduce Dior, Dolce & Gabbana and other luxury fashion labels, along with new categories like eveningwear, gowns and designer and vintage jewelry.

Boyds has in fact sold womenswear since 1993, but never with the focus, success or renown equal to its menswear, which accounts for 80 percent of its business. In 2005 the store introduced a jeweler and a cafe run by French chef George Perrier, of the famous Philadelphia restaurant Le Bec-Fin, to alter the entrenched perception of Boyds as an old boys’ club, a place where female shoppers weren’t understood or entirely welcomed. It didn’t work.

Even today, many people are surprised to learn the store sells womenswear, which Kent Gushner, the president and chief executive of Boyds, finds maddening.

Meet the Gushners

Gushner, who is 58 and carries himself with genial authority, belongs to the third generation of Gushner ownership. His grandfather, Alexander Gushner, a Russian-Jewish immigrant, started with a tiny cigar shop, branched into selling shirts and ties to office workers, then opened Boyds with his brother in 1938. He named it Boyds after a popular theater, and because it didn’t sound Jewish.

Kent’s father, Gerald Gushner, poured his life into making Boyds a success. Gerald, who died two years ago at 86, is described variously by the employees who worked for him as a “dynamo,” “demanding” and “one of the best retailers of his generation.”

“He had a will to win that was tremendous,” Kent said. “A passion to the point that some people would say it wasn’t normal — including my mother.”

Kent started working at Boyds on weekends when he was 13, not because he was made to, but because he found the store an exciting place to be. In those days, Boyds catered to doctors and dentists, but also to flashy, Damon Runyonesque characters, guys who might’ve owned a taproom, taken a number, driven a Cadillac.

Alexander, by then retired to Florida, would constantly phone Gerald at home for reports. Kent’s childhood was spent hearing them discussing Boyds late into the night. “It was their life,” Kent said.

Boyds became Kent’s life, too; he and his two brothers-in-law purchased the store from his father and uncle in 2004. The next phase of their renovation, which should be finished this fall, will bring in more denim, streetwear labels like Stone Island and designer men’s sportswear from Thom Browne and others. Kent’s son, Alex Gushner, 28, who joined the business in 2014 after working briefly in New York for the Italian label Ermenegildo Zegna, is helping to lead the re-merchandising effort. Like his father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Alex spends more time kibitzing with customers on the selling floor than inside his office.

The changes, including an e-commerce site added last fall, are a recognition that Boyds’ survival into a fifth and sixth generation lies not in more coordinating suits and ties. Millennial men of means and power are as likely to wear a Supreme hoodie to work as a suit. And virtually no store of Boyds’ scale earns so little of its revenue from women’s clothes.

“We don’t sell nearly as many suits today as we used to, not even close,” Kent said, and though Boyds remains very profitable, the store had to lay off six sales associates after the 2008 financial crisis.

Kent added: “We have to evolve and position ourselves for the future. Otherwise, we’re on our way to oblivion. We’re another store on the side of the road. It’s just that simple.”

The Pageantry of Sales

To understand how Boyds has avoided oblivion thus far, it’s instructive to spend an afternoon on the selling floors. The revenue engine has long been the second-floor tailored-clothing department, divided between dress shirts, ties and other accessories on one side, and suits and sports jackets opposite. The suit selection is vast, with racks stretching farther and farther back, until the $5,000 Brionis, which, like men’s mink coats, hang in a semiprivate anteroom.

The operation has a choreographed precision. Chris Phillips, 43, the men’s tailored clothing manager, on this day stood near the elevator. It was his job to greet customers, determine their needs and spin them to the right salesperson. What happened next, Phillips called “the selling ceremony.”

Soon the pageant was playing out. A middle-aged man whose belly strained against the buttons of his dress shirt had been presented, like a gift, to John Clementi, a white-haired salesman dressed elegantly in a navy pinstriped Isaia suit and lavender tie. The customer needed a roomier blazer because he’d put on weight. His budget was under $1,000.

“How do you think this would look with jeans?” the man asked, trying on Clementi’s pick, a blended wool, silk and linen blazer from Boyds’ in-house label, Trussini.

“Perfect,” Clementi said. “That would look perfect in jeans.”

“I like the light weight, and I don’t have one like this,” the man said decisively. “OK, let’s measure this up.”

Generally speaking, the men who come to Boyds aren’t there to browse. Overscheduled high earners, they view clothes shopping as one more task to be efficiently completed, an attitude to which every Boyds employee is attuned. The master tailor, Sergio Martins, a Portuguese immigrant whose wife, Ana Martins, is the head women’s tailor, was promptly summoned from his nearby station. The customer asked if the blazer could be altered and ready for pickup early the following week.

“Yes,” Clementi said without hesitation. “Consider it done.”

Clementi would mail a handwritten thank-you note to the man, with his business card tucked inside, as the opening gesture of what he hoped would be a lucrative, lasting relationship. He mentioned a Manhattan real-estate bigwig whom he’s been attending to since 1981, back when the man was a baby-faced student at the Wharton School.

“The day I met him, he came in and initially asked for someone else,” said Clementi, who seemingly has photographic recall of every transaction over 39 years.

Clementi told an old war story. “One time, I had a guy, a car dealer from South Jersey, who was just hitting his stride,” he said. “He came in and bought 44 garments in one evening. Not just the 44 garments. The shirts to go with them, the socks. Soup to nuts. And when he came to pick them up, I had a new line in, and he bought all nine of the new styles.”

Even among the newer generations with their preference for experiences over material goods, Clementi still has his Paul Manafort-level spenders, like the biotech executive who has been known to drop mid-five-figures in one spree, and who was scheduled to come in the next day. The guy was dressed frumpy that first visit, a baggy three-button suit. But Clementi noticed the shoes — “John Lobb, $1,000, handmade English shoes. So I knew, this guy is capable.”

Certain characteristics of Philadelphia, like the big law community and the way families remain in the area over generations like it’s a small town, have helped to shield Boyds from the worst of the retail apocalypse. And, too, men and women still need dress clothes, and tailoring isn’t so easily done, or done well anyway, through a web browser.

A Suitless Future?

It was the season at Boyds when customers were coming in to be outfitted for summer weddings. Two of these included a 28-year-old groom, Seth Finkelstein, and his 66-year-old father, Joseph.

When Joseph was a young lawyer, in the late 1970s, a colleague at his firm told him, “Go to Boyds.” Hardly a fashion plate — “I’m not an easy fit. I’m also colorblind,” he said — he found the staff willing to be remedial style teachers.

“They would write on index cards, ‘This is the color of the suit. These are the three shirts and ties that go with it,'” Joseph recalled. “I had a stack of these index cards. They would chart it out for me.”

Attention on the women’s side is just as doting. In the words of Ramonita Farnesi, who was the first sales associate hired for the women’s department 25 years ago, her customers receive “the ‘Pretty Woman’ treatment.”

Laura LaRosa, who works in the investment and wealth management field in Philadelphia, buys her business suits and black-tie formal wear at Boyds, and if she is considering a dress that one of her colleagues has already purchased from the store, LaRosa said, a salesperson will tip her off, so she doesn’t show up in the same outfit.

“It’s an individualized shopping experience,” LaRosa said. “They know what you like, they know what will look good on you. It’s difficult to find that at a Neiman’s in the mall.”

It remains to be seen if these customers will spend big on the snazzy new lines coming into stock, but their loyalty to the old familiar showplace is something fierce.

Marc Brownstein, the president and chief executive of the Brownstein Group, a Philadelphia-based branding agency, dates his first Boyds shopping trip to high school, back in the ‘80s, and now especially appreciates its delivery service to home or office, and the text messages he gets from the store when a brand is going on sale.

Brownstein believes Boyds has survived for so long through “brains and grit,” sheer will.

“The family just outthinks other retailers,” Brownstein said of the Gushners. “They’ll deliver to your house, to your office. You park for free. You know what parking costs in the center of Philadelphia? They’re going to outwork and out-service everyone else.”

In discussing the old days, Clementi recalled how on a good Saturday, in high season, the suit department would sell 15 or 16 full racks of tailored clothing. “At one time, in all these office buildings, every guy had to wear a suit,” Clementi said.

The suits on the office workers have largely disappeared, along with the stores that sold them. “We’ve outlasted them all,” he said.

Did Clementi ever fear he would be like one of the salesmen at the Arrow Store or Morevilles, out of a job? The equivalent of a typewriter salesman at the dawn of the Macintosh?

“Never,” he said, without blinking.
