Omisore The Game Changer And Other Happenings This Week

This week saw a lot of active judgments which will change the impression of registered heroes forever. From the decisive move of politicians to the sentencing of a “glorified family dad to the stance of Jesus on women, here is a rundown of what went down this week:

Omisore the game definer

Senator Iyiola Omisore

The aftermath of the Osun saturday election has elicited a lot of reactions and realisations. Ahead of Thursday’s rerun, fresh alliances were made to make sure victory. Senate President Saraki’s move to sway Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate Prince Oyiola Omisore to People Democratic Party (PDP) set tongues wagging. However, Omisore had made his choice known when he announced he will be joining forces with the ruling party, All Progressive Congress (APC). SDP, on the other hand, has opposed that alliance.

Chimamanda on Jesus and women

Chimamanda Adichie, has said that Jesus Christ’s treatment of women is an important symbol for gender equality. According to her, the Jewish people at the time were patriarchal but Jesus Christ’s treatment of women, was something new to the Jews. She said this proves everyone is equal in the sight of God. “The Jewish people at that time did not give any regard to women, like many cultures all over the world. Jesus came, and suddenly Jesus is treating women as though they’re his equals.

He was seen being led out of court in handcuffs. “The day has come. Your time has come, a Philadelphia judge Steven O’Neill told the 81-year-old before sentencing him on three felony counts of aggravated indecent assault.

Goodbye Instagram!

Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, co-founders of smartphone photo-sharing service platform Instagram have resigned amid frustrations. The duo resigned from their positions as chief executive and chief technology officer respectively saying they planned to take time off. Although they did not state the reason for leaving, they wrote in a statement that they would like to “explore our curiosity and creativity again…understand what inspires us and match that with what the world needs. It would be recalled Instagram was bought by Facebook in 2012 for a billion dollars.

Girl Smarts: 12 reasons why you've got period symptoms but no period

In other words, you’re suffering from all of the classic signs of your monthly flow-but your period is totally MIA.

You’ve been seriously bloated, moody, and tired. You’ve got monster cramps, and your face is as pimply as a 17-year-old boy’s.

In other words, you’re suffering from all of the classic signs of your monthly flow-but your period is totally MIA.

First: don't freak. It turns out, there are tons of reasons you've got those tell-tale period symptoms, but no period.

“Hormonal changes related to ovulation can affect some of the same pathways in your brain that might be affected by other medical conditions, causing mood swings that feel similar to your period but aren’t related to ovulation or menses, says Chailee Moss, M.D., an ob-gyn at Johns Hopkins Medicine. What’s more, some physical abnormalities in your uterus and ovaries can also cause cramping that feels like PMS, she adds.

While skipping a period every now and then is usually nothing to worry about, if you have a fever, significant nausea or vomiting, or pain that you can’t control with simple OTC medications or that doesn’t improve within a week, check in with your doctor right away.

Otherwise, it’s time to see your doc if you skip more than three cycles in a row, suggests Chicago-based ob-gyn Jessica Shepherd, M.D.-here's what might be going on down there.

Anovulation

Every once in a while, your body goes through all of the hormonal changes associated with PMS, but if you didn't actually release an egg that month, you won't actually get your period. Known as anovulation, it’s more common than one might think. "Ten to 18 percent of all regular cycles are anovulatory, Shepherd adds. In case you're wondering, yes, that stat can make getting pregnant tricky!

Pregnancy

If you've had unprotected sex in the last month, were a bit lax about taking your pill, or rely on the pullout method for birth control, it's worth taking a pregnancy test. Many of the symptoms of early pregnancy, including breast tenderness, mood swings, fatigue, and cramping, are the same ones that you were already experiencing month to month before and during your period.

Think there’s a chance you could be pregnant? Take an at-home pregnancy test on the day that you expect your period. If it comes back negative, wait three to four days and try again. “One to two days can make a difference in a positive pregnancy test, says Moss.

Thyroid conditions

Your thyroid, a small butterfly-shaped gland in your neck, regulates many of your body’s functions, including your metabolism and menstrual cycles. If your thyroid gets out of whack, your cycles can become irregular, says Shepherd. The result: You may you go a long stretch without having your period while still experiencing period-like symptoms, says Moss.

A missed period could be a possible symptom of ovarian cancer.

Because your thyroid regulates your brain function, mood swings that you thought were PMS may be related to your neurologic function, she explains. And spotting or cramping may occur because the lining of your uterus has built up but hasn’t shed because you’re not ovulating.

Be sure to check in with your doctor if you’re experiencing other symptoms of a thyroid condition, including sudden unexplained weight loss or gain, shaking, heart palpitations, or significant fatigue.

Hormonal birth control

One very common side effect of hormonal IUDs is skipped periods. That’s because one of the ways the device prevents pregnancy is by thinning out the endometrial lining so there’s nothing to shed come that time of the month.

And, while they don't typically nix your flow altogether, birth control pills can result in super-light flows or spotting. So you might feel period symptoms like breast tenderness even without a heavy, full-blown period, says Shepherd.

Stress

Stress is a surprisingly common reason for missing your period. “Stress increases your cortisol levels, which affects your hormone balance, says Shepherd-including the hormones that regulate your ovaries and uterine lining.

Some STDs like chlamydia can cause pelvic pain that mimics period cramps.

Exams, the death of a family member, and divorce are all big-time stress-inducing events that can cause periods to go awry. But these life-changing biggies aren’t the only reasons you might be feeling the effects of stress.

“Some people don’t realize they’re so stressed, but once they talk about it they realize they are going through something, says Shepherd. If you think stress is messing with your periods, talk to your doctor; therapy, exercise, yoga, and meditation can all help get your stress under control and your periods back on track.

PCOS

Frequent skipped periods can be caused by polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). “PCOS is a condition in which a patient has an excess of androgens, which are chemicals in the body that affect ovary function, hair growth, weight gain, and sensitivity to insulin, says Moss.

PCOS can result in anovulatory cycles and irregular spotting. It commonly causes cysts to grow on the ovaries, which, if they rupture or cause the ovary to twist, can cause pelvic pain that feels a lot like period cramps.

Up to 20 percent of women worldwide are affected by PCOS, and it's more common among women who are overweight or have a mom or sister with by the condition, Moss says. If you think you might be suffering from PCOS, check in with your doctor. While there is no cure, birth control and other medications can help keep symptoms under wraps and get your periods back on track.

Uterine polyps

You might associate polyps with your colon, but the same small benign tumors can grow in your uterus. “It’s an overgrowth of lining of the uterus, says Moss. Polyps in your uterus can cause cramping and period-like discomfort, even when you’re not on your period.

Because polyps can make it harder to get pregnant, and because there is a small risk they may develop into uterine cancer down the line, your doctor will likely want to remove them, most often with a relatively simple procedure known as a hysteroscopy. During a hysteroscopy, a doctor inserts a long tube up through the vagina and into the uterus. The doctor is able to use the scope to both see and cut out the polyps.

Ovarian cysts

Every month, your ovaries make several cysts in preparation for ovulation, but only one cyst releases an egg. Although the others usually dissipate on their own by the time you get your period, sometimes one cyst or more sticks around.

Cysts can also occur if you have an anovulatory cycle (such as with PCOS). Ovarian cystsoften cause no symptoms at all, although they can sometimes trigger period-like pain when you’re not on your period. So if you’re experiencing irregular cramping, talk with your doctor.

“Cysts in and of themselves aren’t usually a problem, says Moss. “But if they get particularly large, they can cause the ovary to twist, which is painful and requires an emergency procedure to save your ovary.

Gynecological infections

'Mittelschmerz' is a cramp-like pain triggered by ovulation-and it's totally normal.

Some sexually transmitted infections like gonorrhea and chlamydia can result in a condition known as pelvic inflammatory disease, which can cause significant discomfort that feels like period cramping when you’re not expecting your period. UTIs can also cause period-similar pelvic pain, says Moss.

Whatever your down-there infection, a round of antibiotics should help clear it up. So keep an eye out for red-flag symptoms including fever, significant nausea or vomiting, or pain that doesn’t go away with OTC pain relievers.

Mittelschmerz

If you've got PMS-like cramping, bloating, and breast tenderness but no period, one reason may be that it's not quite time for your period yet-but it's coming.

German for "middle pain," mittelschmerz happens about half-way through your menstrual cycle-around day 14 or the time they ovulate, says Nicole Scott, M.D., an ob-gyn at IU Health. It's a totally normal experience-affecting about 20 percent of women-and it doesn't mean anything is wrong, she says. Since it's just your ovaries doing their thing, there's not much you can do to prevent it and the symptoms should go away within a day or two but if it's extremely painful or comes with any sign of infection, call your doc, she adds.

Exercising too much

Hitting the gym on the regular is one of the best things you can do to help deal with PMS, but working out too hard or too often can actually mess up your cycle and in some cases make you miss your period all together, Scott says.

All the physical stress, especially if you lose a lot of body fat, can make your period go AWOL and cause abnormal fluctuations in your hormone levels. These fluctuations can cause moodiness, irregular spotting, acne and other PMS-like symptoms. If you miss your period for three cycles or more in a row, talk to your doctor.

Ovarian cancer

Ovarian cancer is relatively rare, affecting only about 22,000 women a year in the U.S., but it's one of the deadliest cancers for women, killing about 14,000 women a year. A big part of this is because it often shows no, or very subtle, symptoms, Scott says.

Missing your period isn't the most common symptom of ovarian cancer-those are abdominal bloating, urinary problems, weight loss, and pain-but it is a possible symptom, according to the American Cancer Society. So if you've missed your period for three months or more or you have other concerning symptoms, call your doc STAT.

Politics: The US and Canada are reportedly closing in on a NAFTA deal as a critical deadline looms

trump trudeau

Talks between the US and Canada about a revised version of the North American Free trade Agreement are getting closer despite President Donald Trump 's recent attacks on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Canadian officials.

  • The Trump administration set a deadline of Sunday for Canada to agree to a revised version of the North American Free Trade Agreement.
  • To step up the pressure, President Donald Trump and US officials threatened to leave Canada behind and sign a bilateral deal with Mexico unless the Canadians agree to a deal by the deadline.
  • The pressure appears to be working as reports indicate the two sides are closing in on a deal.
  • But there are still several issues outstanding, including dairy tariffs and trade-dispute resolution.

The US and Canada are reportedly working furiously to reach a deal over revisions to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

According to multiple reports, the two countries are closing in on an agreement to update the two decade-old trilateral trade deal and an announcement could come as soon as Saturday.

The intense negotiations come hours before the Trump administration's Sunday deadline for Canada to sign on to a new bilateral trade deal between the US and Mexico. Absent an agreement, the administration threatened the two countries will move forward without their northern neighbor.

This also represents a major turnaround from earlier in the week when Trump hurled insults at his Canadian counterparts during a press conference, prompting a strong reply from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

While no deal is guaranteed, the two sides appear to be closing in on the the NAFTA rewrite.

Pressure to get a deal done

The US-imposed deadline was designed to secure a deal before Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto leaves office on December 1. The law under which the US is renegotiating NAFTA requires Trump to notify Congress 60 days before a signature, so Sunday appeared to be the last day to get Canada into the deal to ensure Nieto can sign the agreement.

The Trump administration is hoping to avoid the possible reopening of negotiations by Nieto's successor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, which could add more political uncertainty.

Early signs that progress was being made came Friday when the release of the US-Mexico bilateral trade deal's official text was pushed back with little explanation. Mexican Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo told reporters after announcing the delay that the US and Canada were attempting to reach an agreement in the short-term.

“At this moment there’s a very serious attempt to continue advancing in the process of finalizing the differences in bilateral issues between the U.S. and Canada, Guajardo said.

Rumblings that progress was being made grew louder when Chrystia Freeland, Canada's minister of foreign affairs and the country's chief negotiator in the NAFTA talks, pushed back a planned speech at the United Nations on Saturday in order to continue talks.

Freeland, as well as other key Canadian officials, returned to the capital of Ottawa on Saturday to make progress on negotiations.

US threatened to move on without Canada

The growing possibility of a deal comes after Trump's team attempted to put pressure on Canada with threats to move forward with the bilateral US-Mexico deal.

"I think Canada wants to do it, I know we want to do it," US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said Tuesday. “We'll see whether it happens, we're sort of running out of time."

Despite the threats, Canadian officials did not appear ready to make concessions — and the country received the support of some notable allies.

Mexico is not committed to moving forward with the US on an exclusively bilateral basis and incoming president López Obrador told reporters on Friday that his administration would push Trump to maintain the trilateral nature of NAFTA.

Also bolstering Canada's position are US lawmakers in both parties. Both Republicans and Democrats have stressed that a bilateral deal between the US and Mexico will likely not get the votes needed to ratify the agreement and Canada should stay in the deal.

A turnaround from Trump's attacks

The possible deal also comes as a surprise given earlier pessimism that an agreement could be reached before the deadline and the barbs traded between Trump and Trudeau earlier in the week.

When asked about the state of NAFTA negotiations with Canada, Trump told reporters at a press conference Wednesday that he rejected a request for a meeting from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

"Because his tariffs are too high, he doesn’t seem to want to move and I’ve told him forget about it," Trump said when asked why he turned Trudeau down. "And frankly we’re thinking about just taxing cars coming in from Canada, that’s the mother load, that’s the big one. We’re very unhappy with the negotiations and the negotiating style of Canada."

Trudeau's office told Business Insider that they made no request for a meeting.

Trump also took a shot at Chrystia Freeland, Canada's minister of foreign affairs and the country's chief negotiator in the NAFTA talks.

"We're very unhappy with the negotiations and the negotiating style of Canada. We don't like their representative very much," Trump said.

Trudeau pushed back on Trump's comments about Freeland and the state of negotiations on Thursday.

"The Americans are finding that negotiations are tough because Canadians are tough negotiators, as we should be," Trudeau told reporters. "A good and fair deal is still possible, but we won't sign a deal that is bad for Canadians."

Several outstanding issues

Even in the face of the Trump administration's pressure, Canada seemed to be sticking strong on a handful of thorny issues and its unclear where the two sides have come out on these problems.

According Canadian and US officials over the past few weeks, the biggest issues going into the talks were:

  1. Canada's dairy protections: A particular sore spot for Trump, the US is demanding that Canada give American dairy farmers more access to its market. Canada wants to keep the protections in part due to the political influence of its country's farmers.
  2. Trade protection: Another major sticking point is Canada's desire to keep Chapter 19 of the NAFTA deal, which created an extrajudicial dispute resolution process that allows member countries to contest particular trade policies of other members. In fact, Trudeau suggested that Canada needs Chapter 19 to protect itself against Trump's volatile behavior.
  3. Auto tariffs: According to reports, Canada is also seeking assurances that Trump will not impose tariffs on imports of cars and auto parts from the country as the president has threatened.

Politics: The US and Canada are reportedly closing in on a NAFTA deal as a critical deadline looms
