Finance: The Lion Air crash dings Indonesia's aviation record, but the region is not the Bermuda Triangle for air travel everyone is making it out to be

Relatives of passengers on Lion Air flight JT 610 cry at Depati Amir Airport, Pangkal Pinang, Belitung island, Indonesia

Some have condemned Indonesian aviation, but the tragedy is out-of-character for an industry that's worked hard to reform for more than a decade.

  • Following the loss of a Lion Air flight in waters off Java on Monday, Indonesia is grappling with a fresh chapter in its troubled aviation history
  • While some have been quick to condemn Indonesian aviation, this latest tragedy is more out-of-character for an industry that has worked hard at reform for more than a decade during a period of enormous growth.
  • Since a Garuda Airways 737-400 left the runway in March 2007, killing one of the seven crew members and 20 passengers, Indonesia has made “enormous strides,â€ an aviation expert says.

When a Lion Air flight fell out of the sky off the coast of Java on Monday, a new chapter began in Indonesia’s troubled history of aviation disasters.

The downed flight JT610 that crashed after taking off for Pangkal Pinang on Bangka Island on Monday morning West Indonesian Time (WIB) was carrying 181 passengers, including two children and a baby, according to the Jakarta Post.

It appears now that all 189 on board have been lost.

Wreckage was located near where the plane lost contact with air-traffic officials, Muhmmad Syaugi, the head of Indonesia's search and rescue agency, BASARNAS, told media.

"We don't know yet whether there are any survivors," Syaugi told a news conference, Monday. "We hope, we pray, but we cannot confirm."

But while many have been quick to condemn Indonesian aviation, this latest tragedy is a bit out of character for an industry that has worked hard to reform itself for more than a decade during a period of enormous growth.

Flying Lion Air today is no death sentence and Indonesian aviation is not the monster everyone is making it out to be.

The Indonesian archipelago is made up of some 17,500 islands.

As the economy has grown, more and more Indonesians can afford to use air transport to travel across a nation of innumerable connections.

When 21 people died on March 7, 2007, when a Garuda Boeing 737 skidded off the runway at Yogyakarta, and burst into flames, officials seemed to awaken from the looming national trainwreck facing their transport future.

Geoffrey Thomas, aviation expert and editor-in-chief of AirlineRatings.com, said the accident was an "epiphany" for Indonesia's national carrier and a turning point for Indonesia.

"Everything had to change and everything did," Thomas said.

Since then, Thomas says, Indonesian aviation has made “enormous strides.

Its national carrier invested in, and updated, its fleet, streamlined its operations and within a hectic decade has re-emerged as a "model" breaking back into the US and European markets as authorities from both exacting regulatory bodies lifted their bans on the airline.

If it's tough getting back into shark-infested waters, then the collective fear that takes hold following blanket coverage of aviation disasters can be even harder to shake.

Which goes some way to explaining the reflex damnation that Indonesia’s reviving air industry and Lion Air have endured these last days.

"We have to be careful not to judge Lion Air too harshly. Lion Air Group has over 300 aircraft and they fly to and from hundreds and hundreds of destinations across Indonesia and their record in recent times is pretty good," Thomas said.

"I think there are a few people out there jumping on Indonesian aviation saying, 'oh, it's hopeless, oh it's terrible,' well, certainly there are some airlines with a checkered record, but Lion is not one of them."

The last fatality Lion Air had was in 2004 and the most damning incident for Garuda in more than a decade was in 2017, when two top executives from its low-cost Citilink carrier resigned after a video of an allegedly inebriated pilot went viral.

Although, it should be noted that it was only when passengers on board complained that the pilot was slurring his onboard welcome that he was dragged off and replaced.

“Overall, Indonesia has made giant strides in the last few years and has become really quite safe to what it was just a few years ago.

But it wasn't always like this

According to Airline Ratings at the end of 2015, Indonesia's disaster-ridden industry had more airlines with the lowest safety ranking than any other country in the world, including Nepal.

"You don't want to be flying in Nepal," Thomas told Business Insider.

AirlineRatings.com regularly measures 407 of the world's major airlines, giving each a safety score out of seven.

Just three years ago, of the 10 airlines that scored just one point or less, all but one was Indonesian.

According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Indonesia is expected to be the sixth-largest market for air travel by 2034, servicing 270 million global and domestic passengers.

Considering its size, scope and the domestic dependence on both tourism and air travel, it is not a market that can be allowed to fail.

“Indonesia has turned it around completely in the last two years, most Indonesian airlines have now completed and passed the IOSA – a demanding international audit, which involves 1,000 safety parameters.

In a clear nod to Indonesia's improving behaviors, the US Department of Transportation's Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that it also upgraded the country's air safety rating, paving the way for carriers to fly to America.

Indonesia has made it compulsory for such international audits, as well as rigorously enforcing international standards.

"And Indonesia itself passed the international civil aviation organization safety audit and the EU has since lifted its ban on Lion and others to fly to Europe.

“So Indonesian aviation, notwithstanding this accident, is probably in the best state it’s ever been," Thomas says.

So what went wrong?

The plane was new. The conditions were good. So why are 189 people dead?

Thomas says aviation experts are almost certain the issue with JT610 related to the pitot tube static system which measures altitude and translates the information back to the cockpit and the autopilot.

"I'm not a pilot, however what I do know is that on the previous flight the pilot’s instruments were unreliable, the pitot static tube feeding in the captain’s data was erroneous."

The pilots that had flown the Lion Air 737 Max that crashed on Monday flagged serious control problems just 48 hours earlier in Bali, similar to those recorded just before the flight crashed into the sea off Java.

Thomas says the jury really is out if this is a Lion Air issue, a Boeing issue or perhaps a pitot tube manufacturer problem.

"We know the mechanics at Lion Air looked at the tube in that flight from Denpesar, we’ve got the log details, it was checked, cleaned and tested. They ticked it off as 'OK.'"

"Whether that was done correctly or not will have to wait for the investigation — which could be months out."

Put simply, a pitot-static system is a system of pressure-sensitive instruments that are used in aviation to determine an aircraft’s airspeed, altitude, and altitude trend.

The pitot tube performs like cruise control on a car, if its set to 100 and you’re only on 80 it will speed the car up to get to what it calculates is the right speed.

Another way of explaining this is when, a number of years ago, Qantas had a similar incident flying between Singapore and Perth where the data coming in from the pitot-static tube "went psycho."

"In that incident, the tube told the autopilot to dive and that’s what the plane did."

What happened to Lion Air flight JT610:

  • According to Aviation-Safety.net flight JT610 took off from runway 25L at Soekarno-Hatta Airport at 06:21 hours local time.
  • At 6:33 a.m., Lion Air flight JT-610 loses contact with Jakarta air control
  • Surveillance (ADS-B) data of the flight, captured by FlightRadar24 and FlightAware, show erratic values (too fast, too slow, too low, etc).
  • The aircraft made a climbing left-hand turn after takeoff.
  • Shortly after passing the ADS-B reported altitude of 2100 feet, data points briefly show a lower altitude of around 1475 feet,â€ FlighRadar24 reported.
  • Altitude data sent via ADS-B continue to show an erratic pattern, varying roughly between 4,500 and 5,350 feet.
  • The values then rapidly decline until contact is lost.
  • According to Aviation-Safety.net, the previous flight of the accident aircraft, then identified as JT043 from Denpasar, Bali, had displayed similar “erratic valuesâ€ in altitude and airspeed after take-off, which stabilized 8 minutes later.
  • A log entry cited by Airline Ratings shows “airspeed unreliable and alt disagree shown after takeoff. It adds that the Captain’s instrument was unreliable and handover control to FO." (first officer)
  • Lion Air has confirmed that the aircraft had a “technical problemâ€ on the previous flight, “which had been resolved according to the procedure.â€
  • The copy of the tech log shows that the Pitot Tube and Static Port were examined and checked.

Hard questions to follow

There can be no doubt that despite their progress, Indonesian air-safety officials face many difficult questions.

For example, when Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta where JT610 took off is undergoing a major terminal expansion program, with plans to add a third runway as well, is said to only have a capacity to manage around 43 million passengers annually, when in 2017 some 60 million passengers flew in or out of the airport.

How much is being invested in personnel and resources when, speaking to the Jakarta Post at the end of last year, Indonesia’s Transportation Ministry airport director Bintang Hidayat said the number of air passengers would climb by almost 30% to 140 million in 2018, much higher than previously expected.

According to data from the Centre for Aviation domestic air travel accounts for nearly 75% of total passenger traffic, yet at the same time, Indonesia has emerged as a huge tourist destination, with visitor numbers increasing by 21% last year as China has become Indonesia's largest source market.

If growth once again outstrips oversight, Indonesia’s not-too-distant dark past and the new, terrible images that sink and rest at the bottom of popular imagination will not be far away.

Buhari To Meet APC Govs Over Party Crisis

Buhari

Lagos – As part of ongoing measures to find a solution to the lingering crisis rocking the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), President Muhammadu Buhari will today meet with governors elected on the party’s platform in the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

A presidency source, who confirmed the development to Daily Independent on Monday, said he is unsure whether Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the embattled national chairman of the party who is expected in the country today will be present at the meeting.

He, however, said among other issues, the meeting will centre on the multiple crises arising from the just concluded primaries in some states which have put the governors at loggerheads with the Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee (NWC).

Our source said with few months to the general elections, “President Buhari is deeply concerned about the developments in the party and as the party’s national leader, he is determined to engage the critical stakeholders in the party on ways to amicably resolve the crisis.

“As such, he will be meeting the state governors tomorrow (today) on the way forward. But one thing I can tell you is that removing Adams Oshiomhole as chairman is not an option. The president has declared support for him as well as other party leaders such as Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Tony Momoh, Ogbonnaya Onu.

“In recent times, there have been reports of possible defection from the governors while those remaining in the party are threatening to work against the party in the forthcoming election. In Ogun, it was reported that Governor Amosun has planted his key aides in the Democratic People’s Party (DPP) and may defect any moment from now.

“The same can also be said of Imo, Zamfara and Ondo states. I believe this and other issues will be discussed at the meeting. The meeting will also seek ways to unite the governors who have reportedly fallen apart over the plot to remove Oshiomhole from office.

The plot to sack Oshiomhole has driven a wedge in the relationship between governors elected on the platform of the party, Daily Independent has gathered.

The governors, who operate under the aegis of Progressives Governors’ Forum (PGF) are sharply divided on the issue as those loyal to President Muhammadu Buhari have distanced themselves from the move.

A meeting of the governors called by the chairman of the PGF, Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, last week, at the Imo Governors Lodge in Asokoro failed to materialise as many of the governors decided to boycott it.

According to a credible source, out of the 21-member group, only Okorocha, Governor Jibrilla Bindow of Adamawa; Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun and Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara, who is the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), attended the meeting.

Daily Independent gathered that the meeting could not yield any positive result as the governors need “at least two third of their members to append signatures for Oshiomhole’s removal.

According to him, it is becoming an impossible task for the aggrieved governors to carry out their mission owing to the backing of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the party’s national leader, who had instructed governors loyal to him not to support the move.

However, speaking with Daily Independent, Babatunde Ogala, the party’s national legal adviser, said while the crisis in the party is something that is unexpected given influx of politicians seeking to get its ticket, he is confident that the party will soon overcome its challenges.

“Firstly, I want you to know that whatever we are going through today is not unexpected. Why is that so? First, we look at the nature of how politics is played in Nigeria. We look at the fact that the stock of APC in 2018 where we are now, going forward towards the 2019 elections, is not the stock of APC in 2014.

“If I recall when APC was formed in 2013, a prophet of doom said it would not last one year, while we have run for five years. If you also recall, nobody gave us a chance, but of course, we went into the elections, and we won. Those who had faith in the party got elected as governors, senators, Reps and so on.

“Being the ruling party and looking at the nature of our politics, you will notice that in the last three or four years, there has been an influx into this party. The awareness and the appreciation of the prospects of the party is now much higher. Unlike in 2014 or 2015, where the party’s ticket was almost like yours-for-the-asking, now there is a mammoth rush for it. So, naturally, the losers will complain.

“No election, by the virtue of whoever agrees with me, is free and fair. Even the man who loses when votes were counted, will tell you that delegates’ list was manipulated against him. Even if he had all the delegates and he loses, he will still tell you that they were induced.

“We are contending with 360 House of Reps seats, 109 Senate seats, 32 governorship positions, 800 or more House of Assembly seats across the nation, and for each of those seats, there is an average 5 or 6 people. So if you put all that together, we are talking about tens of thousands contending for less than 1000 seats. So it is not unexpected.

“Notwithstanding all of that, you cannot deny the fact that there are people who will be unhappy or aggrieved. But the party also has an internal organ to deal with these issues. I can assure you that… when INEC releases the list, you will see people who are ordinarily aggrieved even joining the campaigns, he said.

The Big 5: You can’t deliver change in one term – Buhari; Presidency says challenging Buhari’s certificate in court is disgusting and other stories

These are the stories you should be monitoring today:

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the change promised by his government was not an event but a process which will require more than one election cycle to fix and deliver.

The President represented by the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola who disclosed this on Monday in Lagos while delivering the 75th  anniversary business lecture of the Island Club gave the assurance that the fruits of the efforts his administration has made in fixing the country in the last three and a half years would soon begin to manifest.

“It took more than one term and one election cycle of the Chairman of Island Club to build this hall just as it will require more than one election cycle to build the nation and deliver change, the President said.

The Presidency on Monday described the decision of the opposition to challenge the eligibility of President Muhammadu Buhari to run for the nation’s top office next year without submitting his West African School Certificate (WASC).

As contained in a statement issued late Monday by Presidential Media Assistant, Garba Shehu, in Abuja, the Presidency describing the effort as an old story and “waste of time,” because “we have the record of this and of higher qualifications obtained by hard work and truly merited by Mr President.”

“As Femi Adesina stated clearly, it is a settled issue in the courts. To approach the court to pursue a matter long settled by the temple of justice is an abuse of the judicial system. It is shameful, disgusting and disgraceful,” he stressed.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, has warned Chairmen of Boards of Parastatal Agencies to desist from actions of undue interference in the day to day activities of respective agencies and blatant disregard for extant regulations as such and sundry actions were ridiculing the government.

Giving the warning in Abuja on Monday, Mustapha who described the issues as recurring decimals said he had observed that most governing boards were yet to clearly understand their roles in the corporate governance of the organisations, stressing that government would not hesitate to enforce disciplinary actions on anyone who went contrary to the terms of the appointment.

“Imposing disciplinary measures on chief executives without recourse to laid down procedure and approval from supervision authorities and using the labour unions as agents of distraction in the parastatals, among others. We should desist from these actions and utterances that continue to ridicule the government, he warned.

Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, on Monday called on government officials and political appointees to join the ongoing anti-corruption fight of the Federal Government, adding that agency will not condone corruption at any level of government.

Magu who noted that public service exists solely to serve the interest of the Nigerian public, said the culture of deep-rooted economic and financial crimes in the public service was one of the most fundamental problems facing the Nigeria nation.

“EFCC cannot fight corruption alone; Nigerians need to join us in this war in the interest of our collective survival.“We call on officials and employees of all government agencies to support our efforts and stay away from committing economic and financial crimes,’’ he said.

Following renewed violence and crisis in Kaduna, the Police says it has arrested 93 suspects actively responsible for the mayhem in some parts of state.

Force Spokesman, Jimoh Moshood while disclosing this in Abuja on Monday, said that some suspects involved in the abduction and murder of a traditional ruler, Agom Adara, Maiwada Raphael Galadima have also been arrested.

“43 of the suspects are being prosecuted as we speak, while 50 are currently in Police custody and investigation is ongoing to know the level of their involvement in the activity,”  he said.

And stories from around the world:

The fiancée of Jamal Khashoggi on Monday criticized President Donald Trump’s response to his killing, urging him to set aside U.S. trade interests in the push for truth, and demanded Riyadh disclose more details to bring those who ordered it to justice. (Reuters)

The US Commerce Department on Monday targeted a Chinese tech company with restrictions to cut off access to US technology, saying the firm could harm US security. (AFP)

An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 struck New Zealand’s north island on Tuesday, the United States Geological Survey said, a tremor felt by thousands of people although there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.  (Reuters)

Following Sunday’s 5-1 defeat by Barcelona at Camp Nou, Spanish La Liga giants, Real Madrid have confirmed the sack of head coach Julen Lopetegui, after an emergency meeting of the board on Monday evening.

“He will be provisionally replaced by Santiago Solari, who will lead the first team starting tomorrow, Tuesday,” a statement on the club’s website read.

At least nine people were injured when a 30-year-old woman blew herself up in the centre of Tunisia’s capital, Tunis, the interior ministry says.

Describing the blast as a “terrorist explosion”, the ministry said the woman had had no previous known militant background. (BBC)

Nicki Minaj Reveals Who 'Really Beat Up' Cardi B At NYFW Fight

Many fans were left shocked when rap rivals, Nicki Minaj and Cardi B had an epic showdown at New York Fashion Week during the Harper’s Bazaar’s ICONS party.

According to reports, Cardi B who left the scuffle with a massive bruise on her head got the injury from security protecting Nicki Minaj but the “Queen” rapper has a different story to tell. Minaj during today’s episode of QUEEN Radio dished all about how “Love & Hip-Hop New York star, Rah Ali, is really to blame for the massive bruise on Cardi’s head.

During the QUEEN Radio segment, Nicki Minaj said,

“For people who don’t know, Rah Ali beat Cardi’s ass real bad. You went home and told people that security hit you, and we let that ride for legal reasons.

Nicki Minaj

Nicki is so confident about this new side of the story she is telling that she even offered a cash reward by further saying,

“Anybody that wants to pull up the surveillance footage, I will give you 100 thousand dollars,â€ she added. “Anybody that says that didn’t happened. I would never come up here and lie.â€

Rumours that Rah may have been the one to give Cardi her NYFW bump started last week and Minaj seemed to confirm the speculation with a comment on Cardi’s sister, Hennessy Carolina’s, Instagram over the weekend.

“Keep playing with me you dumb B**** and Ima RAG YOU like I did your sister, Rah wrote.

At first, fans simply thought Rah was just looking for attention, but now that Nicki’s added in her two cents, it’s looking like a much more legitimate story!

It would be recalled that the fight between Cardi and Nicki broke out at NYFW after Cardi approached Nicki for ‘liking’ a comment about her parenting on social media. Cardi threw a shoe in Nicki’s direction, which is when security stepped in to break things up. It is unclear how or when Rah got involved in the altercation, but Nicki has vehemently denied ever making any reference to Cardi’s parenting.

Ajimobi approves payment of outstanding salaries to Oyo workers

Governor Abiola Ajimobi

Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has approved the immediate payment of outstanding salaries to state civil servants and teachers on the state government’s payroll.

This is contained in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr Toye Arulogun, and made available to newsmen in Ibadan on Monday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that only September salary of state civil servants was outstanding. Arulogun, however, said that the approval covered September and October salaries.

He restated government’s commitment to the well-being and welfare of the people of the state, noting that the payment was an indication of Ajimobi’s commitment to the welfare of the workers.

The commissioner noted that Ajimobi was putting in place all measures to ensure workers in the state got their salary on or before the 25th of every month.

“Before the economic meltdown, the Ajimobi’s administration used to pay on or before the 25th of every month.

“During this period, workers in the state also received a 300 per cent increase in salaries between 2011 and 2015 as well as 13th month salaries for three years consecutively.

“There is no doubt that this administration is strongly committed to the welfare of the people and efforts are being put in place to ensure that salaries are no longer owed, Arulogun said.

He charged workers in the state to be diligent, dedicated, devoted, committed and work assiduously toward ensuring financial sufficiency for the state.

Arulogun stated that it was through the “Ajumose’’ spirit of collective responsibility of all stakeholders that the financial reengineering being embarked upon by the administration could be achieved.

He recalled that the state government owed up to seven months’ salary in 2016 and the government promised to clear the backlog in due course which had been achieved.

Strategy: Valedictorians rarely become rich and famous — here's why the average millionaire's college GPA is 2.9

null

People with a high GPA can find success, but they don't often reach the highest level of wealth. They don't become the millionaires or billionaires.

  • GPA is one of the most important markers of success in school — but in the real world, that number has less of an effect on life achievement or wealth.
  • Eric Barker, author of "Barking Up The Wrong Tree," says that becoming a millionaire or billionaire doesn't require an outstanding GPA or being class valedictorian.
  • In fact, he says the average college GPA of American millionaires is 2.9.
  • In the video above, Barker explains what impacts success more than GPA.

The following is a transcript of the video.

What we see is that the average GPA, college GPA of American millionaires is actually 2.9.

So Karen Arnold did research at Boston College looking at the success levels of valedictorians. And, In general, high school valedictorians do well but they don't actually reach the highest level of success metrics. They don't become the billionaires. The people who run the world in general.

And that's because what the research found was that school teaches you to comply with rules. So valedictorians often go on to be the people who support the system, they become a part of the system, they don't change the system or overthrow the system.

And so what we see is that the average GPA, college GPA of American millionaires is actually 2.9. And while valedictorians generally score high in the personality trait of conscientiousness. What you see among the millionaires with their 2.9 GPAs is they're known for grit.

Maybe they don't comply with rules that well but they stick with goals over the long term. And that how they do really well. And sometimes they don't play by the rules, sometimes they do things differently. Because in school rules are very clear in life rules are not so clear.

So a certain amount of not playing by the rules is advantageous once you get out of a closed system like education.

Strategy: Valedictorians rarely become rich and famous — here's why the average millionaire's college GPA is 2.9
