FG Seeks Corps Members’ Support Against Vote-Buying

Lagos – Alhaji Muhammed Bello, the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has enjoined corps members to assist the Federal Government through sensitization of the electorates to discourage vote buying among Nigerians.

He stated this in a message during the closing ceremony of 2018 Batch “C Stream One Orientation Course held at NYSC Orientation Camp in Kubwa, Abuja.

He described buying and selling of votes as acts of criminality, adding that there was the need for Nigerians to exercise their franchise without inducement.

Bello appealed to the corps members to be non-partisan in the discharge of their electoral assignments as the 2019 general election approaches.

Represented at the ceremony by the Director, Finance and Administration, FCT, Hajiya Sefiya T. Umar, he tasked corps employers not to reject corps member posted to their establishments but should rather provide an enabling environment for them.

“The political landscape is agog and you are expected to be apolitical and non-partisan in all ramifications, Bello said.

NYSC FCT Coordinator, Mallam Balama Bello, urged the corps members to be patriotic and behave responsibly in their place of primary assignments.

Kremlin laments US 'unpredictability' under Trump

The Kremlin hit out Wednesday at the “unpredictability” of the United States under the Trump administration, saying it was causing “deep global concern”.

“The fact that America has become unpredictable lately is no secret to anyone,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Dozhd TV during a visit by President Vladimir Putin to a regional summit in Singapore.

“Such unpredictability from the largest country, the most powerful economy in the world, is the subject of deep global concern,” he added.

Peskov’s comments come two weeks ahead of a slated face-to-face between President Donald Trump and Putin at a G20 summit in Argentina.

Relations between the two countries have hit new lows with American officials planning to roll out fresh sanctions against Moscow in response to the botched poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal in Britain.

Western governments have accused Russia of being behind the plot which saw Skripal and his daughter poisoned with a nerve agent. Two British citizens were also poisoned, one of whom died.

Moscow has denied being behind the brazen hit and has condemned efforts to sanction it over the incident.

“We do not recognise these unilateral restrictions… and we consider them illegitimate,” Peskov said of the threatened sanctions, adding they would only “further complicate” Russia-US relations.

World leaders are currently meeting in Singapore, which is hosting the annual Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit.

Trump is not at the gathering and has sent Vice President Mike Pence instead.

Peskov said “no separate meeting” was currently planned between Putin and Pence. But he added that there was no need for a face-to-face given Trump and Putin will soon meet in Buenos Aires.

APGA Intensifies Reconciliatory Efforts

APGA

Awka – The All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) seems unrelenting in its efforts to reconcile differences within the party; especially as it concerned the just concluded primary elections of the party across the country.

The party apparently remorseful over the conduct of the primaries has also shown its readiness to atone for the sins committed against aggrieved members of the party.

This readiness was made manifest at a meeting held in Awka on Tuesday where the reconciliatory committee addressed political appointees in the state and stressed the need for the political officeholders to penetrate the ward levels to pursue the reconciliatory mission to put the party in good stead for the 2019 general election.

Speaking at the meeting, Chief of Staff to the Anambra State Governor, Mr. Primus Ugochukwu Odili, said the meeting was convened to reiterate to the appointees that they have only one political party and the onus is on them to exhibit loyalty to the party as well as ensure that they saved the party from extinction.

Odili explained that while addressing the government functionaries, he tried to recall the just concluded primary elections of the All Progressive Grand Alliance that was allegedly distorted but equally admonished them to go beyond party politics to know that Ndigbo must define their position in the polity called Nigeria.

The Chief of Staff emphasized that they will not get it right if they continue to jump from one political party to the other without a clear vision, stressing that Anambra has defined its political party as an APGA state.

He said other opposition parties were calling APGA for negotiations, but according to him, APGA owns Anambra State and is not prepared to negotiate its vantage position with any other political party in the state.

Meanwhile Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim the Special Adviser to Governor Willie Obiano on Indigenous Medicine and Herbal Practices, said it was a reconciliatory meeting, saying that it was natural for primary elections to breed resentments and aggressions but every political party worth its salt would carry everybody along and sue for peace and reconciliation.

Ibezim maintained that nothing was irreconcilable and APGA as a political party was handling its affairs discreetly so as to indulge all and sundry, stressing that victory for APGA is victory for the entire Igbo nation.

For his part, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Willie Obiano on Inter-Party Affairs cum Political Matters, Ben Obi, said the intent was for aggrieved members of the party to come back to the party to enable it forge ahead because the 2019 general elections and beyond.

Between Akeredolu’s highhandedness and the dismissed journalists lies a hatred for press freedom

Ondo governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria was a former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), a position of influence in Nigeria’s legal profession. On many occasions in the past before his entrant into mainstream politics, he championed the cause and defended the rights of deprived Nigerians. But that seems to be a forgone tale now, as Akeredolu is a departure from his old self.

On Monday, November 12, 2018, the Ondo State government banned some journalists working with some media stations from covering the Governor’s activities and that of the state government. The banned media houses were Channels Television, African Independent Television (AIT), Raypower and Core Television.

According to the state government through its Commissioner for Information, Yemi Olowolabi, the dismissed journalists refused to report activities about the state government and whenever they do, they do it in a bad light. However, in another turn of events, Olowolabi released another statement on Tuesday, November 13, 2018, accusing the dismissed journalists of being parasites and imposters who have turned the state government house into a beer parlour. This second statement is proof that the Ondo government has decided to victimise these media officers for carrying out their legitimate duties and have no basis for stopping them from working in the government house.

This action by the state government is dictatorial and an attempt to intimidate the media. The Ondo State government house is a public property that should be accessible to all journalists and neither the governor nor the government can single-handedly dictate which journalists have the right to cover activities relating to the governor and the government house. Akeredolu has no such power. This is a clear case of highhandedness and abuse of office. Akeredolu must be called to order and must desist from this draconian way of governance.

China To Empower Visually-Impaired Persons In Lagos

Lagos – The Chinese Women Association in Nigeria, acting under the ‘China-Africa People-to- People Friendship Action’, would, on Saturday, November 17, donate items worth N12 million to persons with visual impairment in Lagos.

Mrs. Zhou Jun, the association’s president, said in Lagos that the donation would be made by them and Consulate General of China in Lagos to the Bethesda Home for the Blind, Surulere.

Zhou said that the consulate and the association had been supporting other orphanage and vulnerable persons in different communities in Lagos.

“On Saturday, November 17, the Chinese Women Association in Nigeria would donate items worth N12 million to the Bethesda Home for the Blind in Surulere.

“This project is one of the ‘China-Africa People-to People Friendship Actions’, being funded by the Consulate of China in Lagos and implemented by the Chinese Women Association this year.

“We have before now donated whatever each orphanage or home needed. Chinese companies have been very supportive by giving us these items, she said.

According to her, the ‘China-Africa People-to- People Friendship Actions’ is launched every year to promote friendship between China and Africa.

She said that it was also meant to promote integration of Chinese associations with the local community, local development of education, culture, health and medical care.

The president listed the items to be donated to include power-generating sets, refrigerators, musical instruments, bags, drums, chairs and tables, cooking utensils, rich tissues, bed-sheets, and digital voice recorders.

Zhou, who said that about 12 different projects had been implemented by the association since 2016, added that the gesture was to promote more friendly and development relations between Nigeria and China.

“China and Nigeria are two friendly countries, and we believe in the survival and development of Nigeria and Nigerians.

“These donations are meant to assist orphanages and vulnerable groups in our host communities.

“We as a Chinese community in Lagos, Nigeria, will continue to show our love and responsibilities, obligation to orphanages, the blind and other disadvantaged persons,’’ she said.

Abriba: Where Kinsmen Inherit Properties

The Abriba people in Abia state are known across the South Eastern states in Nigeria. There are several accounts on the origin of the Abriba people. One of which states that the people are a descendant of the Agunaguna sub-tribe of the Ekoi group in present Cross River state. As such, they are fondly called the Usukpam-Etete.

The Abriba people are shrewd in their business dealings and would stop at nothing to ensure that their business is fruitful. There is also a burning desire to outperform their predecessors and own estates.

Although Igbo women are singled from inheritance, the Abiriba people operate a unique system of lineage: the Ikwu-nne (mother’s lineage), the Ikwu-nna (father’s lineage) and the Ogo (in-law). This order determines how the properties are shared and have existed for over 200 years.

The children are the woman’s children and not the man’s. It is, therefore, her responsibility to train and take care of her children. The kinsmen also have more right on her husband than she does.

Accordingly, a child (irrespective of their gender) has a claim on their mother’s lineage properties. The same occurs for a woman where her brother’s properties are given to her instead of his wife or his children. This is because of their Ada nne and the kinsmen status. In this regard, the wife is not left out as she is also willed her brother’s estates and not her fathers especially if their father has sisters.

In extreme cases where there is no estate from the brother to inherit, the kinsmen take over the clothes and other material properties belonging to the man after he is buried.

As for the inlaw’s estate, “ogo bu ikwu-ato (the in-laws are the third lineage.)

Like Lady Gaga, celebrity couple, Miley Cyrus and her fiance, Liam Hemsworth have also joined in providing support towards the Woolsey fire.

The duo of Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth who lost their Malibu home to the fire are donating 181,500,000 naira ($500,000) to the Woolsey fire relief efforts.

In a statement released to E! News from Cyrus’s rep, Miley and Liam revealed,

“Their community and state are very special to them and they want to give back to the place that has created so many beautiful memories for themselves and others. They are donating $500,000 dollars to The Malibu Foundation through Miley’s charity, Happy Hippie in hopes to restore Malibu’s magic.”

Cyrus released a song titled Malibu last year to celebrate the place where she and Hemsworth were able to rekindle their love.

Alleged N5.7bn Fraud: Ex-SURE-P Boss Testifies Against Ex-Gov Shema

Nasiru Ingawa, Special Adviser to former Governor Ibrahim Shema of Katsina State on SURE-P, on Tuesday told a Federal High Court in Katsina how Shema allegedly directed him to use about N5.7 billion state SURE-P funds for politics during his tenure.

The former special adviser testified at the resumed hearing of a fraud case against Shema.

Shema is standing trial before the court on a 26- count charge bordering on fraud, in contravention of Section 15(2d) of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act, 2011, as amended.

The offences are punishable under Section 15 (3) of the Act.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) preferred the charges.

Ingawa told the court that he was the Special Adviser to Shema on SURE-P (Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme) from June, 2014, to May, 2015.

“I remember him (Shema) telling me that we were going to use the funds for politics and that we would extract our savings from there,’’ he said.

He said that the duo wrote memos for certain programmes and used half of the money, while the remaining half went into savings.

Ingawa also said that the department made direct purchases from which a certain percentage would go into savings.

He added that sometimes, they wrote memos for programmes not implemented at all.

“The tradition is that I had to sit down and discuss with him on any programme; if he agreed, he would instruct me on exactly how much the savings should be from that programme,’’ he said.

The witness testified that, sometimes, he gave the funds to Shema directly, while some other times, he (Shema) instructed him who to give.

Justice Hadiza Rabiu Shagari adjourned the case to January 14, 2019, for continuation of trial.

FG serves roadside Ladipo market auto parts dealers eviction notice

A mechanic repairing a vehicle right on the service lane

The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mr Adedamola Kuti, on Tuesday issued final eviction warning to auto spare parts dealers at the popular Ladipo Market in Lagos, trading on its Right of Way (RoW).

Kuti also served final notices on car dealers on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway during a RoW recovery tour by the ministry.

While inspecting the Ladipo Market, he warned spare parts dealers who displayed their wares on the road set back to desist from the act and trade only inside the market.

He also warned auto mechanics using the highway in front of the market as workshops to vacate immediately to avoid being victims of government action.

Kuti said that the traders usually used their wares to block the highway and engaged in street trading, thereby creating obstruction and causing gridlock.

“We are just recovering our RoW. We are not here to disturb anybody’s business but individual businesses should not disturb other road users.

“The road is not part of the market. The market is right inside; go inside and transact business,’’ he said

Kuti said that the ministry had served earlier notices on the traders to vacate the RoW and was giving them a final warning before government would move in to enforce sanctions.

“We are not here to disturb anybody’s business. The road is not for trading; they should go into the market to do transactions,’’ he said.

Mr Jude Nwankwo, President-General, Ladipo Central Executive Auto Dealers Association (LACEC), promised that the association was going to ensure total compliance by its members.

“We have promised to comply and there must be free flow of traffic here,’’ he said.

Nwankwo said that the association was going to shut down the market on Friday till noon to clean it in order to address sanitation concerns raised by the controller’s team.

He appealed to the Lagos State Government to construct a pedestrian bridge and car park for the market operators to save lives and reduce hardship on road users and customers to the market.

During the tour of car dealers’ shops on both carriageways of the Lagos Ibadan-Expressway, Kuti appealed to the various companies to comply with the directive and remove cars parked on road setbacks for sale.

“We have warned you that you should leave the highway. We are already expanding this road and we do not want this obstruction on our highway.

“Please leave before we come and evacuate the cars,’’ he told the car dealers.

The controller said that “Federal Government RoW is 150ft, about 50 meters from the centre of the highway’’.

Kuti said that the contract for the rehabilitation and expansion of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway was ongoing and the ministry did not want obstruction to the project.

`We have warned them; they have been issued letters and now, this is going to be a final warning.

“The next time we come, we are coming to enforce the law.

“They cannot continue to do business on a busy highway, it is unacceptable,’’ Kuti said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Lagos State Ministry of Environment had marked all the auto shops after the Otedola Bridge on Ibadan-bound carriageway on the expressway for demolition.

NAN reports that some of the car dealers were remorseful, rendered apologies and promised to move their cars from the highway, while others insisted that they did not get previous notices served.
