Outrage As Over 200 Priests Protest Killing Of Colleague In Enugu

ENUGU – No fewer than 200 Catholic Priests within the Catholic Diocese of Enugu have protested the killing of their colleague, Rev. Fr. Paul Offu, in Enugu State on Friday.

Offu was killed by yet to be identified gunmen, suspected to be armed Fulani herdsmen, while traveling on Ihe-Agbudu Road in Awgu Local Government Area of the state in the evening of Thursday, Aug. 1.

The Catholic priests, who marched peacefully, passed through major roads within Enugu metropolis on their white official cassock.

Some of the placards they brandished read, “Enough of these attacks on Catholic Priests”, “Governor Ugwuanyi, you are sleeping, wake up”, “Killer Herdsmen must leave Enugu”, “Enugu is in the hands of killer herdsmen”, “Ugwuanyi, stop Killing of priests”

“Catholic Priests are Targets of Hoodlums’’, “We Cannot be Living in Fear’’, “Government Must Address Security Challenge in Enugu’’ and “We Are Not Happy with Government’’.

Addressing newsmen on the development, the Catholic Bishop of Enugu, Most Rev. Callistus Onaga, said that the protest was to register the displeasure of the diocese at the incessant attacks on Catholic priests by hoodlums in the state, which had lasted for seven years now.

Onaga said that the Catholic priests were simply demanding for more security in the state adding that “if there are crop of bad herdsmen in the state they should be fished out and we will continue to live in peace with the good ones’’.

The bishop, however, noted that the attack had become unbearable as the diocese lost a priest in March, who was killed by suspected armed herdsmen.

He said that two weeks ago, another priest was shot in the state and “he is still receiving intensive medical attention as we speak’’.

“I am sorrowful and utterly disappointed on the security in the state. This year alone, we (diocese) have suffered some casualties.

“While we get worried when our priests are attacked is that it shows the level of insecurity other Nigerians face daily.

“Our priests are very much respected and honoured by the people (locals); so if these things can happen to them, what happens to the flock (the people they shepherd?).

“We were shocked to see a priest that joined in our meeting yesterday afternoon in this Bishop’s House very healthy and sound being reported to have died.

“Everybody is so sad, because it is becoming too constant especially within the past six or seven years now; we have suffered serious kidnapping of our priests.

“It is becoming too bad. In 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 our priests were kidnapped at various locations in the state.

“Only in 2017, we were given some breathing space. It continued in 2018 and this year, 2019; it is worse as we have suffered the death of a priest in March this year and now another issue,’’ he lamented.

Nigerian Security Fragile, Shiitte Leader, Sheikh Saleh Warns

LAGOS – The insecurity in the country could snowball into anarchy, if President Muhammadu Buhari does not take immediate and drastic action to curb it.

These were the beliefs of Sheikh Saleh Sani Zaria, national spiritual leader and Secretary General of Rasulul A’azam Foundation (RAAF), a Shiitte leader, with national headquarters in Kano.

Saleh, in an exclusive interview with Crime Tracker during the week, was reacting to the proscription of Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) , a Shiitte group and the continued detention of El-Zakzakky, Shiitte leader of IMN.

The Nigerian Army last week in a press conference disclosed that El-Zakzakky is being kept in protective custody. But Sheikh Zaria noted that though, keeping him in protective custody “should not create tensions and confusions,” but disagreed that, “the fragile security of our country does not warrant that, as it has reached this level.” He therefore, called on “the authorities concerned to cultivate other ways of tackling the (insecurity) problem.”

He regretted that Federal government proscribed the group. His words: “It’s unfortunate that the matter was dragged to proscription. We had wished that the matter is solved through dialogue as proposed by Kaduna State Judicial Commission.”

Saleh disclosed that there are 10 different Shiiitte groups in Nigeria with over one million members.

On Tuesday, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu during a press conference in Force Headquarters Abuja, re-echoed Federal government proscribing the IMN.

Adamu stressed that the activities of IMN “clearly and consistently negate Section 1(2)(A)&(B) of the Terrorism (Prevention) (Amendment) Act 2013 and Section 2(1)(A)(B)(C) of the Terrorism (Prevention) (Amendment) Act of 2013 and hence, justify their proscription in overriding national security interest.”

The IGP further noted that, “in view of their increasing engagement of terror tactics and other violent and subversive activities which contravene the Terrorism Prevention Act 2013, as amended, and vide the judicial pronouncement of the Federal High Court, Abuja on 26th July, 2019, the Federal Government has classified them as a terrorist group and has accordingly, proscribed the El-Zakzaky-led Islamic Movement in Nigeria.”

He therefore, warned that, “henceforth, any person engaged or associating, in any manner that could advance the activities of the proscribed Islamic Movement in Nigeria, shall be treated as a terrorist, enemy of the State, and a subversive element and shall be brought to justice within the context of the Terrorism Act. The import of this is that all forms of procession or protest by IMN is now illegal and thus banned.”

In view of the IGP’s statement, we asked Sheikh Saleh if his group would require permit from the police or other security agents, before embarking on any procession such as marriage ceremony. This is because some policemen who know them as Shiitte, may not know that only IMN is proscribed and its followers tagged terrorists by the IGP

His words: “we normally inform the police and at times the DSS about our religious gatherings and events. Although, gathering like marriages and naming ceremonies do not usually require notifications to security especially in the parts we live in Nigeria.”

He frowned at the IGP’s tagging of all members of IMN or anybody who associates with them as terrorists.

“Let them be categorised in accordance to their offences, so that those with lesser crimes can be accorded fair judgement,” he cautioned.

He disclosed that the ideologies of his Shiitte group is totally different from that of El-Zakzakky group. He said their group preaches peace and engages in peace dialogue.

“We are a registered organisation while they (IMN) are not. Hence we are law abiding citizens. Our Foundation is purely theological while IMN is mostly political with religious coloration.”

According to him, his group “build mosques for religious activities in order to avoid clashing with Sunnis in their mosques, unlike IMN that do not build mosques and sometimes there are clashes between them and the owners of some mosques. We respect the traditional institutions (Emirs), while IMN does not.

Our members join and work in with different constituted institutions of government like the army, police etc, while IMN frowns at such act. We cherish peaceful coexistence with neighbours.”

He, therefore, condemned violent invasion of the National Assembly by El-Zakzakky Shiitte group. Saleh said, he does not “support breaching the laws of our dear country, because that will lead to chaos and anarchy.” He described the violent invasion as “a wrong approach, but peaceful demonstrations as enshrined in our constitution.”

Also speaking on the resented activities of the Fulani Herdsmen and the imposition of the federal government RUGA issue, Sheikh Zaria suggested that in order for peace to prevail, “the government should involve the traditional institution in the matter, because it is an old problem in a new form. In the past our Emirs/ Cheifs/district heads had succeeded in reducing the tensions to the minimal levels.”

Consumers To Spend $150bn On Sustainable Products – Report

A new report has estimated that consumers will spend up to $150 billion on sustainable products by 2021.

The consumers are not likely to value all attributes considered ‘sustainable’ equally, as different attributes resonate best within different product categories, the report added

The top attributes that more than one-third of consumers are willing to pay more for include cruelty free (31%), farm raised (32%), organic farming (33%) and environmentally friendly (33.5%).

The report published by Nielson recently, however advised brands to carefully focus on products with sustainability footprint to build credibility and trust or risk alienating their customers.

“Given the many overlapping sustainable attributes that shoppers encounter today, we examined which sustainability related product attributes, claims and ingredient profiles could translate to price premiums for brands, with consumers willing to pay more for specific sustainability related attributes”.

The report found that products that are environmentally friendly and use recycled packaging resonate most strongly with consumers overall.

“Consumers find both of these qualities to be the most important to their decision making, as well as top attributes they would pay more across all categories.”

The report noted that with sustainability, as with any other aspect, an awareness of an attribute’s value can increase consumers’ willingness to pay more.

“Across categories, consumers’ familiarity with an attribute strongly correlated with their willingness to pay more for it.

It added: “Consumers could note if they were willing to pay a little or a lot for each sustainability benefit”.

Senate Mulls Return Of Jan/Dec Budget Cycle

Senator Ahmad Lawan, President of the Senate, has expressed the desire of the ninth Senate, and indeed the National Assembly, is to have the budget cycle return to January to December.

“The budget 2020 is going to be part of what we want to do differently from the previous sessions of the Senate”, he said

He added that the expectation of the lawmakers is that the 2020 appropriation bill will be presented to the National Assembly on their return from the recess in September, even as he maintained: “It is our prayer and hope. It is desirable that that is done. Once that is done, it is our intention in the Senate and in the entire National Assembly that we devote a month of, possibly, October for budget defence only.

“In a situation that we are able to achieve that, there will be no more budget defence after October.

“Any ministry or agent of government that fails to appear to defend its budget, the National Assembly will take an appropriate action so that we are able to have November and a week or two in December to process and pass the budget and send it to Mr. President to sign in December before Christmas, and added that “We believe that if we are able to do that, our budget will go back to that regular cycle, that desirable cycle of January to December and that will enhance the budget performance of this country.”

He commended his colleagues for their sense of patriotism and commitment to duty in the prompt confirmation of the ministerial nominees, and added that the Senate is prepared to work with the executive for optimum performance but warned that the ninth Senate will be stiff when it comes to discharging its oversight functions.

“We are going to take our oversight very seriously because we will devote our time here to do the right thing and we expect that ministers and heads of government agencies will also do the right thing.

“Nigerians are desirous of going to the next level and we can only go to that next level when we are able to work together to make Nigerians and Nigeria better in terms of service delivery,” Lawan said.

Expected Surge In Oil Supply Sustains Bear Market

OPEC

Growth in oil supply is forecast to accelerate next year in a global wave of production, keeping crude prices mired in a bear market and possibly lowering fuel prices for consumers.

The U.S. is expected to continue driving much of the surge in output, and increases by smaller producers such as Brazil and Norway will contribute to excess supply, investors said.

Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase analysts currently project supply will grow roughly one million barrels a day more than demand in 2020, resulting in a surplus each quarter of next year.

Oil fell about 6.5% to $54.80 a barrel yesterday, heading for its largest one-day drop of the year and extending losses after President Trump announced 10% tariffs on some Chinese imports starting September 1, 2019. Anxiety about trade tensions weakening demand has bolstered worries about a supply glut in recent months, investors say.

Plentiful supply has been a boon for U.S. consumers, who are on average paying less for gasoline at the pump this summer than they were a year ago and continue to drive economic growth even as business investment slows.

Companies including railroad operator Union Pacific Corp. have also cited lower fuel costs as a positive for second-quarter profits, though worries about economic uncertainty and demand continue to hurt transportation firms.

The expected oversupply is also the latest threat to the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and other producers, many of which are curbing output to try to balance the market.

FTAN, ANJET advocate restoration of culture and tourism ministry

Tribune Online
FTAN, ANJET advocate restoration of culture and tourism ministry

ministerial nominees

THE Federation of Tourism Association of Nigeria (FTAN) and the Association of Nigerian Journalists and Writers of Tourism (ANJET) have appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to re-establish the defunct Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

The president of ANJET, Mr Andrew Okungbowa and Mr Rabo Saleh, FTAN president, said recently in a press statement that there was no other time but now to restore the Federal Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

“This should be done if the country and the present government ever hopes to harness the potential of the sector given the abundant opportunities the creative industry and tourism present at this time,’’ they said in a joint statement.

Okungbowa said it would be a disservice to the tourism and culture industry and opposed to the commitment of the Federal Government to diversify the country’s economy if it continued to ignore calls for the restoration of the tourism and culture ministry.

According to the duo, the tourism and culture ministry was created by former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999 and later merged with information in 2015 by President Buhari.

It said that some countries, including United Arab Emirates were reaping from the windfall of tourism and culture and to enjoy this, Nigeria must have a dedicated ministry for the creative industry and tourism.

“The experiment with the information and culture ministry in the last four years did not achieve the desired goal as culture and tourism was treated as second fiddle to information.

“As a result of this, opportunities to develop the sector and upgrade the creative industry were missed and sacrificed on the altar of politics.

“There is no better time than now when insecurity in the land has got to an alarming level that the country needs a separate ministry of culture and tourism.

“With the minister focusing on the best ways of harnessing communication and marketing mix to drive the sector, infuse confidence in the source markets both domestic and international through the appropriate messaging mode,” he said.

Also, Mr Rabo Saleh, the FTAN president, said that the former minister’s lack of understanding and concern for the tourism sector was the major reason FTAN and other culture and tourism stakeholders were clamouring for a restoration of the Ministry of Tourism and Culture.

“We call on President Muhammadu Buhari to as a matter of urgency create a Ministry of Culture and Tourism so that tourism can be given its rightful place and attention.

“It should not be made to play a second fiddle to information as we have seen displayed by the former minister and his team who totally disregarded our events for other matters they rated more important,” he said.

Saleh said the only practical way to drive tourism at the national level was to have a minister of culture and tourism.

He said the minister would be fully focused on working with the stakeholders and agencies of government in harnessing and developing the potential of the sector through policies, programme initiation and implementation.

“These were lacking in the last four years because the minister had so much on his plate and chose to focus attention on information only,” he said.

The two bodies indicated their readiness to work with the minister so appointed for the ministry when created to cover lost grounds and fast-track development of the sector.

According to them, there was much more to gain from creating a ministry of culture and tourism than there was to lose.

Why we tell stories to save lives — Georgia Arnold

Why we tell stories to save lives — Georgia Arnold

Shuga

Tell us about the MTV Staying Alive Foundation

The MTV Staying Alive Foundation has been on for over  20 years now. I co-founded it, and we started talking about issues around HIV to our MTV audience around the world. But what we realised, after a few years of operation, was that while it was great to be able to use the brand to create content, actually, we could do a lot more if we created a foundation, a charity. So, we are an independent charity, but we have the right to use the MTV brand. We are unique because we are the only charity in the world that can do this. What we do is tell stories to save lives. We do it through MTV Shuga. We want to reach young people wherever they are. It is really about reaching farthest miles anywhere around the world. We knew, when we started doing this, that young people were hugely affected by HIV globally and that’s why we wanted to be able to impact that. But as we have broadened our work, we have realised that you can never treat HIV in isolation, it is about being able to reach an adolescent boy or girl with information about their sexual reproductive health and rights. But you can’t target a young person and say you want to talk about sex or HIV and expect them to listen. You have to do it in a way that they feel comfortable with. So, we make sure that we are talking about their lives in everything that we do. We make sure that they feel that their voices are being heard and listened to, and we can reflect that back in what we produce.

There are several other health challenges that are peculiar to youths, why stick with HIV?

HIV hasn’t gone away. Despite the fact that it’s perception has changed and improved absolutely; in fact, when we started MTV Shuga 10 years ago, our message was very simple because there wasn’t much you could say. You could talk to people about using condoms, you could talk about the stigma and the myths around HIV and you could talk about getting tested. But then,  10 years ago, getting tested was traumatic, you were not entirely sure it was confidential, and the drugs you could take were not always accessible as they were expensive. But, if you look at where we are today with the information about HIV, first of all, there is a lot of different messages you can talk about. You can talk about self-testing, which is incredible. You can talk about PrEP, the drug that you can take if you are at risk of HIV; it’s a daily pill that you take to prevent getting HIV. More than that, if you want to focus on someone around HIV, you actually have to talk about sexual reproductive health in general. For a young girl or boy, you need to make sure that they understand what consent is. For a girl, that she understands that as a girl, a condom will protect you from HIV and from getting pregnant and other STIs. Also, that if a girl wants to look at contraception, there are other options out there. There are long-term contraceptives, the implants or the IUD. There’s also the pill. You also have the opportunity, if you want to get pregnant and also space out your next child. You don’t have to continually be pregnant. So there are a lot of different things, but also making sure that a young person knows that they should always double protect, but only a condom will protect you against both. So, there’s a lot to talk about.

Speaking on achievements, how would you categorise the achievements of the MTV Staying Alive Foundation. Have you found these measures to be effective, can they be quantified?

Yes, we can quantify achievements, because we have been effective. The World Bank did a study on MTV Shuga in Nigeria (Series three), and they did randomised control trials for 5000 young Nigerians and split them into two groups. One group watched MTV Shuga and the other watched a youth entertainment show that had no social message in it. At the same time, both groups got vouchers for youth-friendly HIV testing centers and were tested for Chlamydia on day one and then again, six months later. They were both asked 100 questions on first day and six months later. What they saw was that the MTV Shuga viewers doubled the number that got tested for HIV than the non-MTV Shuga viewers. Among the MTV Shuga viewers that were youn girls, Chlamydia dropped by 58 per cent in six months. Also, we saw that the MTV Shuga viewers were having less concurrent partners, which is probably why Chlamydia dropped as well. So, we have fantastic results. And I think we see it because not only do we produce this TV show, we have a huge audience here in Nigeria and across the world. We produce it rights free and cost-free, so we give it away. Not only does it air on MTV Base, but its also in Nigeria on NTA, AIT, and Silverbird. So, we have an  enormous audience; 720 million homes around the world are able to watch MTV Shuga.

We have also taken it off TV so we have a parallel radio show; we have a graphic novel that we produce and we have digital presence on social media. What I am really passionate about is the peer education that we do. We create MTV Shuga clubs. At the moment, over the next two years, we are training up 150 young people in Lagos State, Kano, and Kaduna, and they will be trained on how to use MTV Shuga. These  150 young people will then go out into those three states and into communities to create MTV Shuga clubs. Across six weeks, they will bring young people in and screen an episode and then talk about what they feel and how they feel the story reflects personally on their own lives. From that, we will see real change. So, in two years, we should reach 25,000 young people directly.

Shuga is back, what would you say are the three most important health messages that we can expect?

The umbrella message is sexual reproductive health, but I think number one would be contraception in terms of a young woman knowing what her options are, where to go and where to get it from. I think number two is HIV; that is fundamental to the world. Number three is tackling gender-based violence, that is so important to us. This is series seven, but before the end of the year, we would have produced ten. In every single series that we have done, violence, unfortunately, is always part of our storyline. So, what we make sure that we do is to ensure that young people who watch MTV Shuga know where to go to get information. We work with the Federal Ministry of Health here in Lagos and at national level, we work with ‘Hello Lagos’. We are also working with the Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT), and for sexual health information, we are working with DKT’s Honey and Banana website, and Marie Stopes International.

Do you face any sort of backlash, especially from parents who believe their children should simply abstain?

Interestingly, till date, we have not had any backlash. I think it is partly because in every country, we always work with the government. We are not looking to smash down barriers, what we are looking to do is to be flexible with them, to try to push them a little bit. We have story lines that address not having sex at the moment. I personally don’t like to use the word abstain because I don’t think a 14, 15 or 16-year-old uses the word abstain. They talk about not having sex. I think it is very important that a young person chooses for them when it is the right time to have sex. Parents play a really important role in this. I am the mother of a 20-year-old, and it is really important to be able to have those conversations with your child. But they have to trust you and I think that as a parent, one of the things we encourage is cross-generational watching of MTV Shuga – that a parent watches it with their child, it opens up the door to having conversations around sex. We all know as parents that the more you tell a child not to do something, the more likely it is they are going to do it. If we can have an open conversation with them, if we are able to talk about ‘when you choose to do it, do you know how to do it safely’, then that is really powerful. It is not going to send them scurrying off to have sex, it is going to make sure that they are armed with all the knowledge they need to make sure that the first or the next one after that, they do it the right way.

In your opinion, does Nigeria have the right attitude toward tackling HIV?

I don’t think any country in the world is doing enough. The problem with HIV is that despite the innovation that has happened, HIV is still with us. In fact, there has just been some statistics that came out recently at an AIDS conference in Mexico. They are seeing an increase, in Eastern and Southern Africa, among young women of HIV. Today, there should be no increase in HIV, no one should contact HIV. In the simplest of forms, if we used condoms, if we were all tested, if we were all able to access PrEP, there should be no HIV infection. The reality is very different, and the reality is that the HIV epidemic is still an epidemic, particularly amongst young people, particularly amongst young girls. So no one is doing enough. Also, we rely too much on treatment, I think countries are very good at the treatment side of diseases. They are not so good at the prevention because to talk about prevention means you have to talk about sex. That is not the reality.

MTV Shuga has become quite popular among youths, do you think it is because of the name, or it is because of the message?

I think it is a mixture. The MTV brand is a really powerful tool at our disposal, we are really privileged to be able to use it and use it in such a positive way. I think the other thing with MTV Shuga is that what we try to do is reflect lives. So, before we start writing any script or storyline, the very first thing we do is that we sit and talk to young people in the country and the cities we are working in. For instance, in this series in Nigeria, we have characters who are not only from Lagos but Kano and Kaduna as well. We do focus groups with these young people, and we understand everything that they do outside of what their parents think that they do; what music do they listen to, what clothes do they wear, how do they talk to their parents, teachers, and friends, have they had sex, how many partners have they had, have they chosen not to have sex yet, and how do their peers respond to that. We take all of that and we turn them into story lines. So MTV Shuga is really about the truth of their lives, and I think that is one of the reasons young people are drawn to it. We tell the truth, and the truth isn’t always pretty. But I think when you see your story out there, it certainly reflects back on you and the actions that you take.

Did you think the show would come this far?

Truthful answer, absolutely not. When we started back in Kenya 10 years ago, we did three episodes and we discovered an unknown actress called Lupita Nyong’o. It was her first role. We knew we had been making a lot of documentaries and we had made a film, and we knew that there was power in what we were doing and power in telling stories. We didn’t realise how much we would connect with young people. We hoped. Not only are we launching here in Nigeria, but we have started filming in Abidjan, so we are doing our first Francophone MTV Shuga. Earlier this year, we premiered MTV Shuga Down South, the second series in South Africa. Later this year, we are premiering MTV Nishedh for India. It is the first series we have done outside of Africa. We have to make sure that we are always in the moment and that we always have the best acting talent, the most relevant musicians for the country and the region, but also quality. It is quality over quantity, and that has been our mantra this year. For the first time, we are producing four series, we normally do one a year. So we have to make sure we are really looking at the best story lines and making sure that we understand our audience all the time.

What’s the most challenging part of producing Shuga?

There are so many challenges. I was on set for a while, and the rain was one of them. We film inside and outside and we are in the rainy season and that is definitely a challenge. The script is definitely the bit that we really focus on, so I will see six versions of the script until we are all 100 per cent happy that we have got the voice right.

Wukari Crisis: Now Is The Time To Act

LEADERSHIP :

It appears that it has become the norm that any crime not linked to herdsmen won’t get the necessary attention, condemnation and action, the danger of premeditated interest and unconvincing stereotyping of a tribe in a country where there is multitude of tribes and different tongues. As we talk, lives are being decimated in Wukari, […]

Why I am writing a book of poems

Why I am writing a book of poems

poems

What makes your writing exceptional and what stands you out as an online influencer?

I think a lot of Nigerians are indifferent to poetry most times because of the ambiguous words often used by poets. I feel that  my poetry is simple, relatable and it is  something even the non-lovers of poetry can read and understand,  though they are not used to reading poems.

As an influencer, the personal touch and creativity I put in my campaigns make me stand out on social media. Also, Lazywrita is not just a social media brand, it is a brand with a big name which is very important in building relationships in the social/digital media industry.

Tell us about your poetry book which will be published soon and what should your fans expect?

I have always been a book lover and an avid reader. One of my dreams while growing up was having my books displayed in libraries, book stores and in schools around the country. I am excited to tell you that I am one step closer to making this dream a reality. My book of poetry titled ‘A great poet’ to be published soon is something I feel everyone can relate with, it is something for the youths, kids and adults. ‘A great poet’ is a collection of poetry about love, pain, heartbreak, life and much more. I am inspired by things, people around me, personal experiences and from the works of other brilliant authors that I have read.

How have you influenced and inspired people since you started this?

I can say that I, alongside people like Olorisupergal, Demola Expoze and a few other people were the first generation of influencers in Nigeria so we faced a lot of challenges which some of the new generation influencers nowadays are not facing because some people have paved the way. I believe we are even yet to scratch the surface of influencer marketing in this part of the world as brands continue to invest major budgets every year on social media. So I took it upon myself to guide people and share insight into those who are interested in this line of work that I have found myself. The number of people/lives I have influenced is too numerous because aside brands paying me to share certain information or content to the public, there are instances where I take on CSR campaigns without getting paid. It is my way of giving back to the society.

What other projects are you involved in?

Aside from my upcoming book, I am also working on my YouTube page which is a lifestyle page dedicated to the hacks of social media and influencer marketing. It also showcases the lifestyle of a typical influencer. I also recently joined the team of Devon, Troy, Copper as the Chief Operating Officer. Devon Troy Copper (DTC) is a full service digital communications agency in Ikeja, Lagos that offers a unique mix of strategic services such as social media community management, influencer marketing, talent management, digital marketing strategy, copywriting, design, reputation and crisis management.

Tell us a bit more about yourself.

Anda Damisa popularly known as Lazywrita is a poet, a writer who started blogging as a career in 2013.. I am also a social/digital media strategist who loves exploring the internet.

I am also known as one of Nigeria’s top lifestyle influencers working on several major projects across Nigeria with notable brands like Guinness, Unilever, Nokia amongst many others. I was listed in Y! Naija’s top 100 Social Media Influencers of 2013 – ‘The definitive list’ with the likes of @omojuwa, @Lindaikeji, @Obyezeks, @El-Rufai, @Rosanwo, @Gbengasesan amongst many other important personnel and celebrities.

I am one of Google Africa’s top influencers in Nigeria, and I have embarked on several trips across Africa with the Google team learning and sensitizing my followers to how best to use Google tools to make lives simpler.

Like A House Of Cards

LEADERSHIP :

I never really gave Atiku a chance to unseat Buhari. Don’t get me wrong, Atiku is a fine politician, matter of fact, I think he is the nation’s most consummate politician since the coming of the fourth republic. Don’t Force Mikel, Ighalo Back To S’Eagles – Eguavoen

LAGOS – Against the backdrop of calls to lure John Mikel Obi and Odion Ighalo from retirement, former Super Eagles’ captain and coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has advised against such calls, asking for the players’ decisions to be respected.

Although he admitted that the players would be missed in the Super Eagles, considering their experience, Eguavoen stressed that they should not be forced to act against what they believe was the best decision for their future.

Speaking in a radio sports programme monitored in Lagos on Thursday, Eguavoen expressed shock with Ighalo’s decision but said Mikel’s step was understandable.

“The retirement of Mikel is a little understandable considering how has been in the team for a longer while, but that of Ighalo is a surprise to me, regardless of the reasons behind it.

“Whatever the case, we cannot force anyone to play against his wish, since they have decided they want to stop, we should just respect their decisions and find the right replacements for them,” he said.

“Ighalo is the one who knows why he took the decision that many people believe was taken in spontaneous reaction to pressure and abuse from fans,” he added.

Eguavoen, however, submitted that the two players should be allowed to decide on their own, especially as they were now in their 30s, and are already thinking of life after football.

It would be recalled that both players called it quit with the Super Eagles after the team clinched the third place position at the end of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt, making it the eighth time that Nigeria has won the third place match in the history of the competition.

What makes an AI triple camera smartphone unique?

Tribune Online
What makes an AI triple camera smartphone unique?

TECNO

Nowadays, one of the factors that influence the decision to buy a particular smartphone is the kind of camera on the device. Everyone loves pictures; whether they are pictures of people we care about, selfies, group pictures, high points of an event or beautiful outdoor scenery, we just can’t wait to get that perfect shot, which makes having a good, handy smartphone camera all-important. But there are smartphone cameras and there is an AI triple camera! So, what makes an AI triple camera smartphone unique?

When AI triple camera phones first hit the market, many were excited, and for good reason. For example, TECNO Phantom 9’s AI triple camera has one 16 mega-pixel camera with phase detect auto focus technology which makes it possible to take pictures of moving objects; an 8 mega-pixel camera for ultra-wide shots; and a 2 mega-pixel camera meant to capture depth.

To add to that, during its Ibadan launch on Wednesday, Friday Treat also had the opportunity to experience, first-hand, the TECNO Phantom 9. It was used to capture close-up shots, and you can too, especially if you have something you want to sell.

For those who deal in real estate, this device will make your work easier with its 120-degree main camera. You can simply take wide angle shots of the properties available for sale. This will help you show viewers the full beauty of what is up for sale.

Talking about beauty, you can also take beautiful bokeh shots with the TECNO Phantom 9. Whether for work or just for the love of art, you can enjoy the beauty of the interplay of blur and light.

BBNaija: Who goes home on Sunday?

BBNaija

With seven housemates now out of the BBNaija ‘Pepper Dem’ House, the competition is getting stiff and the strategies becoming clearer.

The housemates once again took part in another Nomination session on Monday night following which Tacha, Mike, Jeff and Omashola were announced as the housemates up for possible eviction. According to Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, the show’s host, at least one of them will leave the House at the next Live Eviction Show on Sunday. Earlier in the day, Frodd had emerged winner of the Head of House challenge and was automatically exempted from nomination.

Sadly, there was no veto power holder to save or replace a nominated housemate, as Big Brother cancelled the privilege following the housemates’ failure to impress him during the challenge on Sunday night.

Will Tacha and Mike once again survive another round of eviction? Or will nomination newcomers, Jeff and Omashola, rake in enough votes to stay in the game? The housemates will have to wait till Eviction day to find out.

‘Sick’ Lewis Hamilton Blocks Netflix Footage From German Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton has said he won’t be allowing Netflix to use any footage of him from the German Grand Prix due to the fact he was ‘sick the whole time’.

Fans of the popular show ‘Drive to Survive’ won’t see any footage of the five-time world champion’s eventful weekend at Hockenheim when the show returns for a second series.

“I won’t be in the Netflix show much, because I was sick the whole time,” he was quoted on GP fans. “I won’t allow them to release that.”

The timing of Hamilton’s decision is unfortunate for the show’s producers as it was the first time Mercedes had granted them access, having opted against appearing at all in the first series.

With the German Grand Prix coinciding with the German manufacturer celebrating its 125th anniversary and 200th race, it seemed to be the ideal weekend for the cameras to focus on the team.

However, in a cruel twist of fate, Mercedes were to endure one of their worst races of the season.

Hamilton, who was suffering from a sore throat, managed to take pole position but crashed during the race losing part of his front wing.

He also received a five-second time penalty for incorrectly entering the pit lane and eventually finished a lowly 11th place before being bumped up to 9th after penalties for both Alfa Romeo drivers.

Teammate Valteri Bottas was unable to capitalise either, failing to finish entirely after crashing out.

The race was eventually won by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen although Hamilton still holds a 41-point lead over Bottas in the overall standings.

Mercedes will be hoping for better luck at the Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend, although they will be away from the glare of the Netflix cameras.

Team boss Toto Wolff insisted the producers would still be happy with the footage that would be signed off.

“We have given the Netflix guys more content than on any other weekend.” he said.

AC Milan Confirm €35m Leao Signing From Lille

The 20-year-old replaces Patrick Cutrone in the Rossoneri squad after spending just one season in Ligue 1 with Lille
AC Milan have signed Rafael Leao from Lille for a reported €35 million (£32m/$39m) fee.

The 20-year-old striker, who can also play on the wing, arrived in Italy on Wednesday to undergo a medical and subsequently signed a five-year deal with the Serie A side.

The Rossoneri had been linked to the Portugal Under-21 international for weeks and reports suggested they would send Tiago Djalo to France as part of the deal, but the 19-year-old centre-back has not been included.

A product of Sporting CP’s youth system, Leao joined Lille last August and went on to score eight times in 26 appearances in 2018-19 as they finished second in Ligue 1.

He replaces Patrick Cutrone, who joined Wolves this week for a fee of around £20 million ($24m), and becomes Milan’s third signing and most expensive of the current transfer window, following Theo Hernandez and Rade Krunic in joining the San Siro outfit.

Meanwhile, they are also working on the signing of 23-year-old Flamengo defender Leo Duarte, as the Brazilian side’s head coach, Jorge Jesus, confirmed that a deal has been reached between the two sides.

“I’m sure Duarte will become a Milan player, it’s all done,” he said after his side beat Botafogo 3-2 on Sunday. “He’s preparing for his move to Europe. I wish him all the best.”

While Milan have been busy adding new names to the squad, they have also waved goodbye to Ignazio Abate, Cristian Zapata and Riccardo Montolivo after their contracts expired this summer.

It has been a hectic close-season for the side, starting with head coach Gennaro Gattuso’s departure in May, with the former midfielder being replaced by Sampdoria boss Marco Giampaolo.

And in the background, former Rossoneri captain Paolo Maldini was appointed technical director while Zvonimir Boban was named chief football officer

Grimsby Town Fined £15,000 Over Port Vale Violence

A football club has been fined £15,000 for failing to control supporters after violence erupted at a League Two game.

More than 100 fans clashed at the Grimsby Town v Port Vale game on 10 March 2018.

An FA hearing found Grimsby Town had failed to act on police intelligence about possible violence and had an “insufficient number of stewards” at the match.

The club has refused to comment on the report’s findings.

The FA’s report said violence broke out after both sets of fans charged each other after Grimsby Town scored a last minute equaliser.

In his match report, referee Sebastian Stockbridge said: “Before we kicked off to restart the game, supporters from both clubs charged towards each in a violent and confrontational manner.

“They came over the advertising boards and on to the field of play. Stewards attempted to stop them and remove them from the field of play, however there were too many supporters for the few stewards.”

It took nine minutes to clear the pitch and resume the match.

Grimsby Town said it had increased the number of stewards and improved its CCTV system
Twenty-five men were later given suspended jailed sentences and banned from attending football matches for their part in the violence.

The FA found Grimsby Town had failed “to take the security concerns raised by Humberside Police seriously and the intelligence the police provided was not acted upon”.

The report said if the club had acted on the police warnings it could have asked for additional officers to be on duty which would have “have assisted stewards in deterring those that wanted disorder”.

The club said its relationship with the police had broken down and admitted “safety was being compromised as a result”.

In mitigation, Grimsby Town said it had increased the number of stewards and installed an improved CCTV system.

Saudi Law Firms Refusing To Act Against Pirate Football Broadcaster BeoutQ : FIFA

Saudi Arabia’s beoutQ has been slammed by football’s leading governing bodies and domestic leagues for its continued illegal streaming of European and international football, with the alliance again calling on Riyadh to take action against the “pirate broadcaster”.

FIFA, the AFC, UEFA, Germany’s Bundesliga, Spain’s LaLiga, the English Premier League and Italian Serie A issued a joint statement Wednesday regarding the activities of beoutQ in Saudi Arabia.

“We, the rights holders of various football competitions, collectively condemn in the strongest possible terms the ongoing theft of our intellectual property by the pirate broadcaster known as ‘beoutQ’ and call on the authorities in Saudi Arabia (KSA) to support us in ending the widespread and flagrant breaches of our intellectual property rights taking place in the country,” the group said in a statement.

BeoutQ emerged following a major diplomatic dispute between Qatar and a number of neighbouring states, after the Saudi-led coalition’s surprise blockade on Doha in June 2017.

Saudi Arabia and its allies, looking to undermine, blocked the Qatari broadcaster BeIN Sports, which provided football fans from across the Arab world access to English Premier League, Spanish La Liga and other important games.

After BeIN was blocked, a mysterious pirate broadcaster emerged in Saudi Arabia, illegally streaming matches provided by the Qatari provider.

Since May 2018, FIFA, UEFA, the AFC and major football leagues said they have been working with an international legal counsel to monitor and compile evidence against beoutQ of its illegal broadcasting of games on an industrial scale.

They concluded that beoutQ is specifically targeting customers in Saudi Arabia and is “utilising the facilities of at least one KSA-based entity”.

Over the past 15 months, the football alliance said it had spoken to nine law firms in Saudi Arabia which refused to act on their behalf against beoutQ, the statement said.

“As copyright holders we have reached the conclusion, regrettably, that it is now not possible to retain legal counsel in KSA [Kingdom of Saudi Arabia] which is willing or able to act on our behalf in filing a copyright complaint against beoutQ,” the alliance said in a statement.

“We feel we have now exhausted all reasonable options for pursuing a formal copyright claim in KSA and see no alternative but to pursue beoutQ and a solution to this very serious problem of piracy by other means.”

It did not mention what action it might take yet, but stated that initial pledges by the Saudi government to act against the pirate broadcaster have come to nothing.

“Given the scale of beoutQ’s piracy in KSA and that the piracy continues unabated, we request that the Ministry and the Saudi Government take swift and decisive action against beoutQ,” it added.

“We are committed, collectively and individually, to working with all relevant authorities to combat the beoutQ piracy.”

Havertz Could Succeed Me As World Player Of The Year” – Matthäus

Germany legend Lothar Matthäus has tipped rising Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz to follow in his footsteps by being officially recognised as the best player in the world.

Havertz, who turned 20 in June, scored a stunning 17 Bundesliga goals from midfield last season to help Leverkusen finish fourth and to seal a return to the UEFA Champions League.

Capped three times by Germany, he finished second to Borussia Dortmund captain Marco Reus in the voting for the 2019 German Footballer of the Year prize.

Matthäus, meanwhile, was named the FIFA World Player of the Year in 1991 – a year after captaining West Germany to FIFA World Cup glory. The 58-year-old, who won seven Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich, now feels that Havertz has the potential to one day win the Best FIFA Men’s Player prize.

“He has set the bar very high – for me he was the player of the season,” Matthäus told kicker magazine.

“If Havertz can maintain this high standard, with his natural talent, cleverness, presence on the pitch, and goal threat, then he could someday follow me as world footballer of the year.”

Matthäus praised Havertz for keeping his feet on the ground to date, and said that playing in the Champions League again will further help his development.

Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky echoed club captain Lars Bender by also telling kicker that he has been hugely impressed by his teammate – often smiling to himself while watching how easy Havertz makes the game look.

“The lads here are just happy to play with him,” Hradecky said.

“Players even want to join us in order to play with him. This elegance, calmness, and sense of space usually only comes to a player when they’re 28.”

Last year, at the age of 18 years and 307 days, Havertz became the youngest player in Bundesliga history to make 50 appearances.

In April he scored on his 100th appearance for Leverkusen, and his brace in the 5-1 win over Hertha Berlin on the final day of 2018/19 made him the highest-scoring teenager in a single Bundesliga campaign.

The Aachen native, who started all but one of Die Werkself’s league matches last term, also netted three times in the UEFA Europa League.
