Fire as passenger jets collide at Toronto airport

Two jets collided on the ground at a Toronto airport on Friday, setting the tail of one aircraft alight and prompting passengers to evacuate the other via an emergency slide.

Both WestJet and Sunwing confirmed that their planes were involved in the collision at 18:19 local time (2319 GMT) at Toronto Pearson International, the second such incident at the airport in five months.

Several hours after the collision the airport said all WestJet passengers were safely at the terminal, adding that one of the airport’s fire and emergency service personnel was undergoing hospital treatment.

“At this time, airport operations have not been significantly affected by the incident but continue to be challenged by the extreme cold weather conditions,” the airport’s statement said.

The panicked shouts and cries of those aboard were audible on one Instagram video shot by a passenger inside the WestJet plane.

The clip showed flames erupting from the Sunwing aircraft, sending black smoke spewing into the frigid night air.

“Our plane was crashed into by another plane right after the pilot announced they were ‘low on staff,’” wrote the user who posted the video, under the handle stephen_belford.

WestJet said on Twitter that the Boeing 737-800 plane had 168 guests and six crew onboard, and had arrived in Toronto via Cancun.

Waiting to proceed to the gate, the aircraft “was struck by a Sunwing aircraft pushing back from the gate,” WestJet said.

“Due to the position of the aircraft on the laneway, WestJet guests required evacuation via emergency slide. Emergency crews were on hand and responded immediately,” the airline tweeted.

The company did not specify if the incident resulted in injuries but said “all 168 guests and six crew are accounted for.”

“We can confirm guests are safely in the terminal and they are in the process of clearing customs.”

In a statement posted on its social media pages Sunwing said “there were no Sunwing crew or passengers onboard at the time of the incident,” adding that its aircraft had been “under tow by our ground handling service provider” prior to the collision.

Toronto’s weather was clear but overnight the temperature plunged below -20 degrees Celsius (-4 degrees Fahrenheit).

The Transportation Safety Board had arrived at the scene and launched an investigation.

The collision is the second such incident at Toronto Pearson in recent months.

In early August, a Canadian and a Polish passenger jet clipped wings on the ground at the airport, causing “serious” damage but no casualties.

2019: APC Restates Commitment To Peaceful, Credible Elections In Ebonyi

APC, katsina, Kebbi, Ekiti, Unagha

The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday restated its commitment to peaceful and credible 2019 general elections in Ebonyi.

The state’s Chairman of the party, Mr Eze Nwachukwu, who gave the assurance while addressing journalists in Abakaliki, therefore, appealed to groups and individuals preaching violence and war ahead of the elections to have a rethink.

Nwachukwu insisted that APC would abide by extant laws, rules and regulations guiding peaceful conduct of elections in the country.

He said that the party had at a stakeholders meeting on Friday, reviewed its preparedness for the forthcoming general elections and seen the need to make its position known especially in view of unsavoury comments allegedly made by some politicians in the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The state governor, David Umahi, had said that he was ready for the political intrigues that would herald the battle for elective positions in the state ahead of the 2019 general elections.

He said this on Monday while addressing stakeholders of Afikpo North and Ezza South, who paid him a Christmas visit at his country home in Uburu.

In his remarks, he vowed to ensure the re-election of the state and federal lawmakers from Afikpo North and Ezza South Local Government Area of the state.

Umahi had said that there was no vacancy in the state House of Assembly and National Assembly positions in both councils, and that those aspiring for the positions should wait for 2023.

“I am a man of war and ready to war in ensuring that the present occupiers of the positions are re-elected in 2019.

“We all came together on the platform of divine mandate and would complete the mandates together.

“When we all finish our tenures, I will force the present occupiers to vacate the seats to ensure that other aspirants realise their ambitions,’’ Umahi said.

Nwachukwu described the governor’s threat as an indication of acceptance of defeat.

“Gov. Umahi, while addressing stakeholders of Afikpo North and Ezza South, who paid him a Christmas visit at his country home in Uburu, declared himself as a man of war and ready to fight for his re-election in 2019.

“For us in APC, such comments are un-dignifying and unwarranted especially coming from a man occupying the exalted office of Governor.

“Election is neither a war nor a do-or-die affair. It is a free contest that is only decided by the electorate through the ballot hence it is not an act or war.

“Our questions then are: who is fighting who and who is warring against, who since it must take two to fight or to get involved in a war,’’ Nwachukwu said.

“The Governor knows that he has been technically defeated and that is why he wants to threaten and intimidate.’’

Nwachukwu stated that as the largest opposition party in the state, APC believes that power resides with the people and that such power is exercised through their free franchise.

He said that the party would rather seek the votes of the people than preach war.

“For us in the opposition, ours is to mobilize the electorate, canvass for their votes and support and to urge them to actively participate in the electoral process through sustained sensitisation.

“We are letting residents know that we are ready and set to take over power not by hook or crook, but by the laid down legal procedure that enhances peaceful and credible elections.

“We in APC subscribe to the laws of the land and this includes those laws and guidelines regulating conduct of behaviour during elections because in Nigeria there are laws guiding actions and behaviour and our actions,” Nwachukwu added.

He, therefore, urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to be vigilant and to apply strict sanctions against any political party or candidate for the elections that violates the electoral law or INEC guidelines.

Tevez Dumps Martin’s Shanghai Shenhua For Boca Juniors Return

Former Manchester United and Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez has dumped Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins’ Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua and has rejoined his first club in Argentina Boca Juniors.

He was once reportedly the highest paid player in the world, earning €750,000 with the Chinese club.

Tevez, who will turn 34 next month, met with Boca coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto and immediately began pre-season training at the Los Cardales complex.

The Argentine club announced the return of Tevez on Friday with a picture of him working out alongside his team-mates.

“Tevez has come home!” the club said. “Today (Friday) he joined up with Guillermo’s squad at Cardales and he is training with his team-mates.”

Boca however did not give details of his contract or disclose if the Chinese club had been paid a transfer fee.

The move marks Tevez’s third stint at the Buenos Aires club whom he first signed for in 2001 and again in 2015.

The 2004 Athens Olympic gold medal winner with Argentina won the 2017 Chinese FA Cup with Shanghai Shenhua with Martins scoring in both legs of the final against Shanghai SIPG.

Group berates IGP, calls for his sack over comment on Benue herdsmen attack

Wike Raises The Alarm Over Plot To Make Rivers Unsafe

wike

Gov Nyesom Wike of Rivers said on Friday that there was an orchestrated plan to create the impression that Rivers was not safe through the promotion of targeted cult related killings.

Wike made the allegation when the Minister of Interior, Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Danbazzau (Rtd) paid him a courtesy call in Port Harcourt.

The governor said that the state government was ready to partner with the Federal Government to tackle the security challenges in the state.

He stated that the security agencies in the state had knowledge of the cult kingpins terrorizing flashpoints in the state.

“The security agencies have the profiles of all cult kingpins in different parts of the state and they know their locations, there is no wisdom in the politicization of security.

‘’Insecurity can affect anybody, you can never know the next victim of insecurity,’’ the governor stated.

Wike called on the security agencies and the Federal Government to deploy personnel to cult flashpoints in the state to stop repeated attacks by cultists.

“In every system, the security agencies know the flashpoints, here we requested for the strengthening of security around these flashpoints, especially areas with high prevalence of cultists.

‘’I expect that security would be beefed up in these places, I ask this question, Is there an orchestrated plan to tag Rivers State unsafe?

“Is the situation above the security agencies, despite the information we have made available to them?” the governor asked.

He accused oil multinationals for the escalation of cultism in some communities, adding that the multinationals had encouraged cultism through the award of surveillance contracts to cultists.

Wike lamented that having been funded by multinationals, cultists were able to purchase sophisticated weapons with which they caused mayhem on communities and law-abiding citizens.

He disclosed that the State Government had made several requests to the Inspector-General of Police to deploy special squads to tackle cultism and kidnapping in Rivers.

The governor stated that the Inspector-General of Police had failed to deploy special squads to the state, despite several requests by the State government.

“The peculiar nature of Rivers State requires peculiar intervention, before now, I have been shouting that we need support to fight crime, I have made this complaint severally,” he said.

Wike berated politicians who had wanted to adopt cult-related killings to play politics by making false allegations against the state.

Earlier, the Minister of Interior, Lt.-Gen. Danbazzau noted that he was in the State at the instance of President Muhammadu Buhari to assess the security situation.

The Minister on behalf of the President, condoled the government and the people of the State over the killings at Omoku.

“Rivers State is important to the country, particularly when it comes to the issue of the nation’s economy.

“It is very important that the Federal Government collaborates with the state to see how any security gap can be closed for adequate protection of lives and property, ” the Minister added.

Borno Govt. Extends Curfew In Maiduguri For 7 Days

Boko Haram

The Borno Government on Friday announced the extension of curfew in Maiduguri for another seven days from 8:00 p.m. to 6: 00 a.m.

The government on Monday rescheduled the curfew hitherto observed between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. to run between Jan. 2 and 6.

A statement by Dr Muhammad Bulama, the Commissioner for Information, said the curfew was extended to Jan. 12.

Bulama said that the curfew was based on “strong” advice of the Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole.

“The state government hereby announces the extension of the rescheduled curfew time earlier announced 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. every day by another one week.

“In other words, the prevailing curfew regime is to now last until Friday, 12th January, 2018.”

Bulama explained that the action was to avail the Armed Forces sufficient time to complete the on going special operation against Boko Haram terrorists and consolidate on the success so far recorded.

He noted that the state government deeply regretted the inconveniences and difficulties caused to the people by the action.

Bulama stressed that the decision was taken to safeguard the collective security and overall well being of the people.

“Government therefore urges all indigenes and residents of Borno State to see this temporary measure as part of necessary sacrifices we all have to make in the interest of peace, stability, development and progress of not only our dear state, but Nigeria as a whole.

“The understanding, support and cooperation of the general public is highly solicited in the observance of the curfew,” he said.

Akwa Ibom Jailbreak: 28 inmates still at large – Prisons boss

Akwa Ibom Jailbreak: 28 inmates still at large

The Controller General of Nigeria Prisons Service (NPS) Mr Jaffaru Ahmed, has disclosed that 28 inmates of Ikot Ekpene Prisons who escaped during jailbreak on Dec. 27, 2017 were still at large.

Ahmed disclosed this to newsmen after an inspection of facilities in Ikot Ekpene Prisons on Friday.

The controller general, who described the facilities in Ikot Ekpene Prisons as well fortified, attributed the jailbreak to lapses on the part of prison staff.

“About 40 inmates found their way out of Ikot Ekpene Prisons in a broad daylight around 11.45 a.m.

“They took on the lapses that they saw, perhaps they have been planning it for a very long time and actualised it on December 27, 2017 when they saw the opportunity.

“The 28 that are at large are very hardened criminals; some of them are kidnappers awaiting trials, some are facing capital offences and therefore it is something to worry,” Ahmed said.

He lamented that those still at large supposed to be in custody to allow the other members of the society to live in peace.

He assured Akwa Ibom people and the entire nation that the fleeing inmates would soon be recaptured to face their trials.

He added that any staff found wanting would have to face the full wrath of the law.

The controller general debunked insinuations from some quarters that the jailbreak was due to infringement on the fundamental rights of the inmates.

He said, “These prisoners were not rioting because there was maladministration in the prison system, but they organised it in order to get freedom illegally. That is what actually happened.

“It was not that they were not being fed or given medical attention or not taken to court.

“Any insinuation anywhere, I state that investigation I have here before me, that there was nothing than they took lapses on the part of staff and organised to escape.”

Ahmed commended the Akwa Ibom Government for the support given to the Nigeria Prisons Service and appealed for more.

He thanked other sister security agencies for their cooperation and sought for more to enable the service to recaptured the fleeing inmates, to ensure peace and tranquillity in the state.

Troops of Operation Lafiya Dole on Thursday rescued Pogu in company of one other girl, Jamila Adams, at Pulka in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno.

The 219 girls were abducted by Boko Haram insurgents at Government Secondary School, Chibok in 2014.

He expressed joy over the development, and hoped that the remaining abducted girls would soon be rescued from captivity.

Alonson said that he is a family member of the rescued girl, adding that four of his nieces abducted in the school were still held by the insurgents.

“I am happy over the development; our abducted daughters are still with their captors.

“This demonstrates the commitments of the military to the rescue of the girls,” he said.

Kidnapping: NMA Threatens Withdrawal Of Services In C/River

Anti-Quackery

Members of the Cross River Branch of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), have threatened indefinite withdrawal of their services to members of the public from January 8.

This followed the kidnap and non release of one of its members, Dr. Usang Ekanem, who was abducted on December 26, 2017 by gunmen.

Dr. Effiong Mkpanam, the state Chairman of NMA, told newsmen after an emergency meeting on Friday in Calabar, that members of the association had suffered series of abduction from kidnappers.

Mkpanam, who expressed dissatisfaction with the trend, said that the attacks were frequently perpetrated on their colleagues while discharging their legitimate duties of saving lives.

He said that Ekanem, a former chairman of NMA in the state, was kidnapped on December 26, 2017 by some unidentified men, adding that the state government and security agencies were not doing enough to rescue their colleague.

“As we address you today, it is with grief that we make public the fact that a very senior medical practitioner and one time chairman of NMA has been in the kidnappers’ den for 10 days and counting.

“As doctors, we swore an oath to save lives of members of the public who are in need of our skills.

“We have observed with dismay a dangerous trend in which the security and lives of the same doctor is being threatened by some disgruntled members of the society.

“The NMA in Cross River hereby instructs all its members, both in public and private medical facilities, University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Institutional Hospitals, General Hospitals, Mission Hospitals and others to withdraw their services.

“They are to observe a total and indefinite withdrawal of services to members of the public until such a time that our colleague is safely released by his captors and measures taken to forestall future occurrences.

“It is noteworthy that in 2017, within Calabar alone, five doctors and three of their dependents and family members were kidnapped at various locations,” he said.

The NMA chairman called on Gov. Ben Ayade and all the relevant security agencies to urgently intervene in the matter.

He said that the kidnappers had earlier established contact with the family of the victim where they demanded for a ransom of N100 million and later reduced it to N20million.

Uhuru's cabinet: How President Kenyatta betrayed former Devolution CS

Jubilee supporters angry at President Kenyatta for turning his back on former devolution CS

A section of Jubilee party supporters are angry at President Uhuru Kenyatta for allegedly turning his back on his former Devolution Cabinet Secretary(CS) who sacrificed a lot to support his re-election.

Details have emerged of how President Uhuru Kenyatta allegedly betrayed his trusted former Devolution CS.

Following yesterday’s announcement of a section of the cabinet in which Mwangi Kiunjuri’s slot as the Devolution CS was taken by Fred Matiangi, Laikipia residents have reacted in anger, exposing how the head of state allegedly betrayed Kiunjuri.

His supporters were quoted by a local daily stating that Kenyatta prevailed upon Kiunjuri to drop out of the Laikipia gubernatorial race so as to help him campaign.

Consequently, Kiunjuri dropped out of the race which was eventually won by Ndiritu Muriithi with his supporters maintaining that he would have won the seat given the massive support he enjoys in the county.

Herman Muchangi, a resident of Laikipia County confirmed that “It was the same President who convinced Mr Kiunjuri not to leave the Cabinet for elective seat so as to help him defend the presidential seat.”

However, even after shelving his political career, Kiunjuri had nothing to show for it with his name conspicuously missing from the list of CS nominees, leaving Laikipia residents disappointed.

Hannah Wanjira disclosed that they “were surprised as residents of Laikipia County that our son’s name did not appear in the names of those who were retained by the President in his cabinet”.

“We are urging the President to reconsider his decision and retain Mr Kiunjuri in his government,” she added.

“I am sure that Mr Kiunjuri could have won the seat due to his political influence in Laikipia County and the country as whole if the President could have allowed him to vie for the seat.

As residents of his home county we are therefore asking President Kenyatta to reconsider his decision and retain him to the government,” added another Laikipia resident Antony Ndegwa.

With a few more slots to go, it is not clear if the president will retain Kiunjuri who according to a resident of Laikipia “played a big role in making sure that the President was re-elected for a second term in office”.

Lifestyle: Gates Foundation honours one of Nigeria’s ‘forgotten Ebola hero’

Gates Foundation honours one of Nigeria’s ‘forgotten Ebola hero’

Like many other Nigerian heroes, it is foreign agencies and governments that usually accord these rare stars an opportunity to tell the world their stories.

The Gates Foundation has honoured Dr Adaoro as one of its five heroes in the field for 2017. Adaoro is one of the few Nigerian doctors that helped in curtailing the spread of Ebola in the country.

According to a tweet by the foundation, Dr Adaoro was one of  the doctor infected with the communicable disease by Mr Patrick Sawyer, a Liberian diplomat, in Nigeria0. An incident that happened at the First Consultant Medical Centre (FCMC) in Lagos where she was having her one-year compulsory medical housemanship and training.

Adaoro, who has now dedicated her life to the research, treatment, and prevention of future epidemics, said about her experience fighting the disease.

“You don’t know if it’s going to end with your death,” she said.

“Ebola is going to come back. It may not be next year or the next five years. But it will come back. I know I was sick for a reason. There’s a lot more I have to do.”

How Nigeria failed to honour Dr Ameyo Adadevoh, Adaoro and others

Dr Ameyo Adadevoh, Adaoro and others of the FCMC, Lagos have been credited for curbing the spread of Ebola virus in Nigeria by placing the Patient zero, Patrick Sawyer, in quarantine despite repeated pressures from Liberian Embassy in the country.

Adaoro narrated the incidence during one of her interviews: “On the night of Sunday, July 20, 2014, Patrick Sawyer was wheeled into the Emergency Room at First Consultants Medical Centre, Obalende, Lagos, with complaints of fever and body weakness….Knowing that Mr Sawyer had recently arrived from Liberia, the doctor asked if he had been in contact with an Ebola patient in the last couple of weeks, and Mr Sawyer denied any such contact. He also denied attending any funeral ceremony recently….”

“During our early morning ward round with Dr Adadevoh, we concluded that this was not malaria and that the patient needed to be screened for Ebola Viral Disease… Dr Adadevoh at this time was in a pensive mood. Patrick Sawyer was now a suspected case of Ebola, perhaps the first in the country. He was quarantined….“

However, Dr Adadevoh never survived the infection but she and her team did a good job of millions of lives in Nigeria.

Despite the obvious sacrifice made by Dr Adadevoh and her team, the government of Nigeria has not acknowledged their efforts in preventing this epidemic. The team had not received a National Merit Award nor have medical facilities named after them.

Like many other Nigerian heroes, it is foreign agencies and governments that usually accord these rare stars an opportunity to tell the world their stories. As a result, many people see no reason in giving more towards developing the country.

The opposition party clearly told the All Progressives Congress (APC) led government to perish the thoughts of hiking the per litre price of fuel from the “already exorbitant N145 per litre.”

The party said investigations have shown that the Federal Government has been lying to Nigerians on oil related issues while using the NNPC to bandy figures with intentions to arrive at “APC’s predetermined agenda to increase the price of fuel.”

The PDP further stated that the lingering fuel crisis and its attendant black-market costs were only a ploy by the APC to justify their intended hike of petroleum prices.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, who signed the statement said the APC Government has completely become numbed to the sufferings of Nigerians to the extent that it no longer cares in imposing more hardship on the people.

The party said instead of putting more burden on the people, the APC government should “come out clear on sleazes in the oil sector under its watch, particularly the shady oil subsidy payouts and illegal lifting of N1.1 trillion worth of crude using unregistered companies.”

Recalling that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had in December informed Nigerians that the NNPC has been paying subsidy on fuel, the PDP said the Federal Government has refused to tell Nigerians who the beneficiaries are, the amount involved and who authorised the payment, because of the inherent corruption in the deal.

“Any increase in fuel pump price would be an indirect tax on Nigerians to fund APC interests and considering the pains Nigerians have suffered under this inept and unfeeling government, this intended hike will be callous.

“It is now clear to all that this APC- controlled government will never act in the interest of Nigerians. All the actions and policies of APC, in their close to three years in office, have been targeted against Nigerians and there are no signals that they will change.

“We therefore urge Nigerians to reject this plot to raise the prices of petroleum products even as they gear towards using the next election to end the misrule of the APC” the statement added.

Gov. Ikpeazu Gives Condition For Re-Election In 2019

Ikpeazu

Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia, has said he would only seek re-election in 2019, after successful completion of projects initiated by his administration across the state.

Ikpeazu disclosed this while speaking in a political programme “Osinachi”, at the Broadcasting Corporation of Abia monitored in Aba on Friday.

“There are a few things which I am saying if we are able to finish by the grace of God, in the future I would think that we can answer the call to seek for re-election in 2019,” he said.

He named some of the ongoing projects as the construction of Ifeobara basin, the reconstruction of Arochukwu road, the Osisioma interchange as well as the revival of the School of Nursing in Aba.

Ikpeazu said that since leadership is linked to achievements in office, he can be sure of matching any other candidate after completing the projects.

He said that government had so far invested about N325 million towards upgrading facilities at the Enyimba Stadium with a view to making it “world class”.

Ikpeazu said two billion naira had been released to Setraco Construction Company for the reconstruction of the Aba-Port Harcourt road, adding that his administration had also done well in promoting made-in-Abia goods by patronising the products.

He said that his administration had also recorded successes in its agricultural projects especially in Aba which was aimed at improving the life of the people.

Tech: 9Mobile gets new owner by January 16 – NCC

9Mobile gets new owner by January 16 - NCC

Globacom, Bhartel Airtel are among the five final bidders for the company.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has maintained that a successful buyer of 9Mobile (formerly Etisalat Nigeria) would be announced on January 16, 2018.

Mr Sunday Dare, Executive Commissioner, Stakeholders Affairs of NCC, disclosed that there will be no shift in date again. He also said the eventual winner will undergo extra due diligence checks to help stabilize the company.

All these. he stated, are aimed at consolidating achievements of the telecom sector.

“There would be no shifting of date, insisting that the sale must be concluded January 16 this year, and 9mobile will be handed over to its new owner on that same date.”

“Nigeria can learn a lot from the Indian telecom experience of consolidation and market competition in the development of the telecom market. The consumer in India now enjoys lots of benefits and cheap data,” he said.

The sale of the telecom operator was billed to concluded by December 2017, but it was shifted following a request made by the board of 9Mobile to the NCC. This request, the board, noted is to allow the final bidders perfect their final bids.

Also Read: One of these 5 telecom companies would soon be the new owner of 9mobile

The final 5 bidders shortlisted by Barclays Bank Africa

The bidding process was coordinated and evaluated by Barclays Africa. Owing to this, the bank in December 2017 shortlisted the final five firms that are currently bidding to get 9mobile.

These firms include Globacom, Bharti Airtel, Smile Telecoms, Teleology Holdings Limited and Helios Investment Partners.

Reasons for the selling 9Mobile (formerly Etisalat Nigeria)

9Mobile (formerly Etisalat Nigeria) took $1.2 billion loans from a consortium led by Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) and Access Bank Nigeria Plc. It, however, defaulted in the loan repayments due to operational reasons and crisis in the Nigerian foreign exchange market in 2015 and 2016.

This led the parent company, Etisalat International, to pull out of the Nigerian business as the creditors threaten to transfer to the company to receivership. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the NCC prevented this move by banks and appointed an interim board for the company to lead its transformation.

Uhuru's cabinet: Gideon Moi’s men missing in cabinet after DP Ruto’s allies protested

Uncertainty in Gideon Moi’s camp after President Uhuru fails to name his allies in cabinet

Baringo Senator Gideon Moi who has declared interest in the 2022 presidential race will have to wait a little longer to know if his allies will make it to the cabinet.

Even after Kenya African National Union (KANU) led by Moi submitted list of nominees for cabinet slots, none of them was appointed, with the party leaving empty handed and disappointed as President Kenyatta named a section of his cabinet.

Earlier on, influential party official Nick Salat ha confirmed that the party had submitted a list of people to be considered for top government and cabinet positions in the Jubilee administration.

Reports indicate that the move had angered Deputy President William Ruto and his allies who protested the move.

Ruto and Moi are both eyeing the presidency in 2022.

In the list that was widely circulated in the media, the party reportedly fronted Nick Salat, Kiprono Kitony and Isack Ruto among others.

The move was interpreted as an attempt by Moi to kick out Ruto as the kingpin of Rift Valley politics and position himself strategically for the 2022 presidential race.

With just a few more slots remaining and with intense lobbying underway, it is not clear if Uhuru will honor KANU’s demand to be given slots in cabinet in exchange for supporting Kenyatta’s reelection bid.

‘Ibadan Obaship Tussle To Be Settled Out Of Court Soon’

Court, technician

The apex socio-cultural organisation in Ibadanland, the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, has expressed confidence that the lingering chieftaincy dispute triggered by the installation of 21 new obas by the Oyo State government will soon be settled out of court judging by the ‘cooperation and enthusiasm’ of the contenders in its reconciliation efforts.

According to statement made available to INDEPENDENT from the governor’s office, the President of the CCII, Chief Yemi Soladoye, said this in an interview with journalists shortly after leading a Truth and Reconciliation Committee to a meeting with the Governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, at the Governor’s Office, Ibadan, on Friday.

He was upbeat that an amicable resolution, which, he said, would produce no victor nor vanquished was in the offing in the avowed determination of the CCII and respected elders of the land to end the impasse.

The CCII president said that the TRC would round off its troubleshooting efforts by the end of January and make recommendations, which he said would be satisfactory to the parties concerned.

He said that membership of the TRC, which is being coordinated by the CCII, included representatives of the elders of the land, religious bodies, retired military officers, recognised mogajis, authentic mogajis and a former Senator Rashidi Ladoja.

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, had instituted a court action against the state government following the installation of the 21 Obas by the governor; an action, which, he said, did not follow the due process and tradition.

At the Friday’s meeting with the governor were the leaders of the authentic mogajis, Chiefs Olawale Oladoja and Abass Oloko, who have been the arrowheads of the opposition against the installation of the new obas and have been speaking in support of the Olubadan.

Also in attendance were the representatives of Ibadan Elders and retired military personnel on the TRC, Chief Lere Adigun and Gen. Raji Rasaki, respectively.

Soladoye said, “We are happy that all the stakeholders in the matter have seen the need to embrace peace. Judging by the progress we have made so far in the TRC, I can assure you that the matter will soon be settled out of court judging by the cooperation and enthusiasm of the parties.

“We have extracted a firm promise from those concerned on the need to withdraw all the court cases in the overall interest of Ibadanland. We are doing everything possible not to jeorpadise the reconciliation process, hence all the stakeholders have been included in the TRC.

“We have advised the contenders to stop issuing inflammatory statements capable of dragging back the hand of the clock. You will recall that there had been threats and counter-threats by the 21 obas and the authentic mogajis in recent times.

“We have no doubt that the issue will soon become history. In the end there will not be no victor nor vanquished. We are meeting with all the stakeholders and we deemed it appropriate to meet with the governor first. We are happy that he is keen on seeing the matter resolved amicably.”

The CCII said that the attendance of the authentic mogajis at the meeting with the governor should send a positive signal to the people that the TRC was making appreciable progress that would soon bear fruits.

He was upbeat that none of the stakeholders would be dissatisfied or still feel embittered at the end of the reconciliation efforts.
